For Call of Duty Franchise, Another Record-Breaking Launch

Call of Duty: Black Ops, the new installment in Activision Blizzard’s popular first-person shooter franchise, kicked off what promises to be a big holiday season for the company–it sold a record-breaking 5.6 million copies in its first day on sale Monday. Halo: Reach Has Impressive $200 Million Launch Day

Despite an overall sales slump in the videogame industry, Halo: Reach, the latest entry in the Xbox 360 science fiction franchise, scored over $200 million in sales on its launch day Tuesday. Phil Spencer, VP at Microsoft Game Studios, expects its success to support console sales heading into the holiday season. But despite Spencer’s boast that “its launch has already surpassed every game, movie, and entertainment launch this year,” it’s not the record holder for opening day game sales. Those bragging rights belong to “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” which earned $310 million on its launch day last November.

Strong Christmas Not Enough to Save 2009 for Videogame Industry

The videogame industry eked out strong December sales, with higher prices of portable devices overcoming a decline in sales for all other categories, according to a new report from The NDP Group. Overall, sales for the year were down eight percent, with revenues of close to $19.66 billion compared with $21.4 billion in 2008. Nintendo held gaming court as it took three of the top ten best-selling game spots.

Videogame Sales Off Again Last Month

Videogame sales declined again in November, confirming fears about weak demand this holiday season. Market research firm NPD Group said overall revenue from videogame hardware and software fell 7.6 percent in November to $2.7 billion compared with the same month in 2008. Game software sales fell 3 percent to $1.41 billion.

High Hopes for Tackling Terror

Blowing away terrorists, apparently, never gets old. The new videogame Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, set to hit stores Tuesday, is a sequel spawned by sequels. But rather than following the frequent pattern of franchises fading as they age, Modern Warfare 2 is the most highly anticipated game of the season.

Big Expectations for the Next "Call of Duty"

Activision Blizzard’s “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” a first-person-shooter videogame, is coming out Nov. 10, and anticipation is mounting. Specialty retailer GameStop has been taking pre-orders since last April, much earlier than most games.
