			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Would new standards for wireless SD cards create more options for camera users &#8212; or more confusion?</p>
<p>In case you missed it, <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/248493/is_the_sd_association_trying_to_bully_eyefi_out_of_intellectual_property.html">last week </a>a battle started brewing between Eye-Fi, maker of wireless memory cards, and the SD Association, which represents more than a thousand companies that set industry standards and promote SD (Secure Digital) standards acceptance.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/EyeFiCard.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/EyeFiCard-380x261.png" alt="" title="EyeFiCard" width="380" height="261" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-167334" /></a></p>
<p>The argument stemmed from this: At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month, the SD Association <a href="https://www.sdcard.org/home/SD_Association_Adds_Standardized_Wireless_Communication_to_SD_Memory_Cards_-_ENGLISH.pdf">announced plans for a new Wireless LAN SD standard</a>, formally named the iSDIO specification, for full-sized and micro SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. The SD Association said this will enable consumers to send pictures, videos and other content more easily from existing digital cameras to online cloud services and other SD devices in home networks.</p>
<p>Eye-Fi, which has been baking wireless technology into SD memory cards for several years &#8212; many consumers are familiar with the Eye-Fi cards, which bring Wi-Fi capabilities to cameras &#8212; says that this new set of standards violates the company&#8217;s intellectual property.</p>
<p>While both parties have declined to provide details as to which technical specifications are in question, Eye-Fi CEO Yuval Koren has put up a <a href="http://www.eye.fi/blog/isdio-specification-and-the-standards-process">blog post</a> staking Eye-Fi&#8217;s claim in the matter.</p>
<p>Eye-Fi is also miffed that the SD Association went ahead and put out a public statement on the new set of specifications. Eye-Fi says the statement suggests the new standards have already been adopted, when, in fact, they were submitted for approval on Nov. 28, 2011, and the 60-day IP review process is still underway. Eye-Fi told <strong>AllThingsD</strong> that normally there’s no public disclosure during this stage, because it’s not yet a ratified standard.</p>
<p>The SD Association, meanwhile, told <strong>AllThingsD</strong> that it routinely announces new standards during IP review, and didn&#8217;t change its practices for this announcement.</p>
<p>The SD Association IP review period is set to close in two days.</p>
<p>So, with that out of the way: How might all of this impact consumers?</p>
<p>To start: It&#8217;s generally agreed upon that more options for consumers are a good thing. The SD Association is presenting more options, and it says it&#8217;s doing so to respond to market demand, as wireless accessibility becomes more important.</p>
<p>But Eye-Fi argues that, in this case, more options will create more fragmentation.</p>
<p>While the actual documents that detail the new iSDIO standard haven&#8217;t been made public yet, the SD Association has confirmed that the proposed specifications would set standards for cards that fall under two types of devices: Type W and Type D. &#8220;W&#8221; stands for Web, and that kind of SD card would support peer-to-peer wireless functions. The home network interface would be designated by a &#8220;D&#8221; symbol, and would support home network communication functions. A wireless LAN SD memory card could provide both of the wireless types, and would carry both symbols.</p>
<p>Eye-Fi&#8217;s Koren told us that in Eye-Fi&#8217;s view, the SD Association has the potential to confuse and set back the camera industry just as the industry moves forward with sharing. &#8220;In the name of standardization, what seems to be happening is more in the way of fragmentation more than anything else,&#8221; Koren said. He also questioned whether compatibility issues could arise as a result of the two different device types.</p>
<p>Kevin Schader, the SD Association&#8217;s director of communications, issued a statement, saying, &#8220;Products made using SD standards will work together, as they have for the past 12 years.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to keep in mind that this flap is coming at a time when consumer adoption of smartphones is surging, and many consumers are using their smartphones for photo-taking &#8212; and for immediate sharing. Meanwhile, more consumer electronics makers are introducing cameras that have a variety of Wi-Fi capabilities, cloud services and apps for sharing built directly into the cameras &#8212; eliminating the need for additional, external Wi-Fi cards.  </p>
<p>Eye-Fi already works with 10 top camera manufacturers and dozens of photo sites; it also licenses its technology to SanDisk, the world&#8217;s largest provider of flash memory. Koren points to <a href="http://www.kodak.com/ek/US/en/Kodak_Builds_on_the_Award-Winning_Share_Button_with_the_New_Wi-Fi_enabled_KODAK_EASYSHARE_Wireless_Camera_M750.htm">Kodak&#8217;s new wireless camera</a>, announced at CES, as an example of a camera maker that&#8217;s introducing more wireless sharing capabilities while still relying on Eye-Fi cards.</p>
<p>In some ways, Koren said, Eye-Fi&#8217;s platform has been similar to smartphones in that it is driven by operating systems, and that makes Eye-Fi technology more adaptable to changes than Wi-Fi technology that is built into cameras. As Wi-Fi standards advance and change, Koren argued, it&#8217;s easier for consumers to put in a new card &#8212; the way they might update a phone&#8217;s operating system &#8212; than it is to invest in entirely new hardware, or in this case, a new camera.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s the next step? The SD Association&#8217;s IP review process is set to wrap up on Jan. 27 &#8212; this Friday. Either the SD Association will vote to adopt the new iSDIO standards, or it will narrow the scope of the specifications or rewrite them in some way.</p>
<p>Eye-Fi, which is a member of the SD Association, says it hopes the association comes to the right decision. Which, in Eye-Fi&#8217;s eyes, would mean no new set of iSDIO standards &#8212; and less of a chance for competition that could possibly encroach on Eye-Fi&#8217;s intellectual property.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think for the SD Association to proceed with this, whether implicitly or explicitly, their members or anyone adopting the specifications would be made aware of the fact that there are some essential IP claims wrapped up in that standard,&#8221; Koren said. &#8220;And they&#8217;d be operating at their own risk.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yahoo shareholders felt a little giddier earlier this week, when it seemed as if the company had finally decided to make a deal with its Asian partners.</p>
<p>But the happiest crew might end up being the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s outside counsel, Skadden Arps &#8212; and especially <a href="http://www.skadden.com/index.cfm?contentID=45&#038;bioID=1514">Leif King</a>, the fantastically named legal eagle who has been advising Yahoo on the deal.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because today the Yahoo board approved continuing the negotiations to come to a final agreement over the stake, sources said, which should take six to eight weeks.</p>
<p>It&#8217;ll surely be happy holidays for billable hours!</p>
<p>As costly as the legal bills will be, if it all goes well, an Asian solution will mean one major problem solved, with a possible pile of cash and new assets coming in to Yahoo. </p>
<p>To get there, the company signed a term sheet earlier this week with Japan&#8217;s SoftBank to sell back all its holdings there, and with China&#8217;s Alibaba Group to sell off more than half its stake (moving from a 40 percent stake to a 15 percent one).</p>
<p>The deal values Yahoo&#8217;s total shares in both companies at about $17 billion.</p>
<p>While it gets a pretty accounting name &#8212; &#8220;cash-rich split &#8220;&#8211; the vehicle to unwind it all is essentially a complex tax dodge finally cooked up by the trio, in which cash, new assets and stock will be moved around until everyone gets what they want (except the U.S. government).</p>
<p>I would explain it &#8212; but I am on vacation, and would rather drink eggnog and sleep &#8212; so here is <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204552304577116733621100176.html#ixzz1hOAcfLSg">The Wall Street Journal&#8217;s version</a>, which I like because it sounds like Alibaba and SoftBank are giving Yahoo a hugely loaded Starbucks card for Christmas:</p>
<p>&#8220;As envisioned in the scenario, Alibaba would create a subsidiary into which it would put several billion dollars of cash, plus an operating asset that Yahoo wants to buy using additional cash from Alibaba, almost like giving Yahoo a prepaid card for an asset of its choice, the people said.&#8221;</p>
<p>Everyone is hoping there will not be any hiccups in the deal, which has been spearheaded by Yahoo board member and Intuit CEO Brad Smith, and Jerry Yang, who is also the company&#8217;s co-founder and a major shareholder.</p>
<p>Alibaba CEO Jack Ma and CFO Joe Tsai, both co-founders of that company, were the point men for the Chinese company. And for SoftBank, it was its founder and CEO Masa Son and his main U.S. exec, Ron Fisher.</p>
<p>Now, said sources, Yahoo&#8217;s board is hoping to still keep the bids from a pair of private equity firms &#8212; Silver Lake and TPG Capital &#8212; alive.</p>
<p>While initially the focus on the action, the PE bidding for partial Yahoo stakes has recently been sidelined by the Asian deal.</p>
<p>Now, sources said, Yahoo is hoping the new infusion of cash and assets will allow it fend off shareholder unrest &#8212; <em>stock buybacks and dividends, anyone </em> &#8212; to solicit higher prices from the firms to make strategic investments.</p>
<p>Yahoo had considered the initial bids too low, as did some very pissed-off activist shareholders.</p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s not clear if those firms will jack their offers now, although sources said Silver Lake is still interested in some sort of deal that would give it influence over remaking Yahoo.</p>
<p>Silver Lake and others think the long-troubled company could be revived with some effort, and become a much more lucrative Web property. </p>
<p>But those negotiations might run into roadblocks over who gets to pick leadership for the company. Yahoo has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/yahoo-intensifies-search-for-ceo-with-hulus-kilar-as-dream-unicorn-candidate/">accelerated its efforts to hire a new CEO</a>, after firing Carol Bartz in September. </p>
<p>The PE firms, who would buy a large stake in Yahoo, also have wanted some level of control, including CEO and board approval, in order to be able to make massive changes at the company to turn it around.</p>
<p>Wall Street seems to like the Asian part of the deal, at least, since it shows some sort of forward momentum at Yahoo, and from its often-lugubrious board. </p>
<p>Shares are up almost 7 percent in the last few days, although they are not popping as they might be, given that new valuations based on a successful Asian deal put the stock at a much higher price.</p>
<p>In other words, investors like what they see, but are watching and waiting for more.</p>

<p>She is currently located in Chicago, where the social buying site is headquartered.</p>
<p>A Google spokesman confirmed the move by Georgiadis, while Groupon&#8211;which specifically denied a query about her appointment that BoomTown made Tuesday&#8211;dithered.</p>
<p>In a statement, her boss, SVP and Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora said:</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m grateful for all that Margo has done for our team over the past two years. We will miss her, but we&#8217;re also very excited that she&#8217;s joining a terrific company and a great partner for Google.&#8221;</p>
<p>Besides COO, I will officially bestow the title of &#8220;Chief Cat Wrangler&#8221; on Georgiadis, for the massive organizational job ahead for her at the notoriously chaotic start-up. (As evidenced by <em>Google</em> being the company confirming a major Groupon hire.)</p>
<p>Still, Groupon&#8217;s growth had been stunning. It now has thousands of employees and has already washed out one COO, former Yahoo exec Rob Solomon, whose <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110322/exclusive-groupon-president-rob-solomon-steps-down/">departure was reported here</a>.</p>
<p>It has also turned down a $6 billion acquisition offer from Google, raised a badillion dollars in venture funding from tech&#8217;s top investors and also is prepping an IPO valuing the company at upwards of $15 billion.</p>
<p><em>Phew!</em></p>
<p>Georgiadis must bring calm to this perfect storm.</p>
<p>Because of her solid resume (see below) and quiet demeanor, I had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110329/wanted-groupon-coo-must-like-cat-wrangling-lack-of-spotlight-and-international-travel-post-samwer/">included her in a list of candidates</a> several weeks ago and had queried the social buying company about her specifically this week.</p>
<p>In fact, when I asked for a comment if Georgiadis was hired on Tuesday, a Groupon spokeswoman said: &#8220;This would be news to me. Nothing to announce yet.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the time, Google had the class to simply say &#8220;no comment.&#8221;</p>

<p><em>(Lesson learned!)</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20110421/NEWS08/110429964/groupon-hires-coo-from-google">Crain&#8217;s Chicago Business&#8217; John Pletz</a> first posted on Georgiadis&#8217; hiring earlier today.</p>
<p>In any case, Georgiadis is just the kind of candidate that Groupon has been looking for&#8211;a competent and experienced sales and operations exec who would not overshadow its quirky CEO and co-founder Andrew Mason.</p>
<p>As I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110329/wanted-groupon-coo-must-like-cat-wrangling-lack-of-spotlight-and-international-travel-post-samwer/">wrote two weeks ago</a>:</p>
<blockquote classs="memo"><p>Lastly, and perhaps most important, the Groupon COO candidate is going to have to accept that the role will not be a CEO-in-waiting, either before or after its inevitable IPO in the next year.</p>
<p>While I have received several tips that co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason might not stay its principal exec, extensive checking with sources inside and outside the company indicate that such a move is highly unlikely.</p>
<p>&#8220;Andrew is beloved to the board, by investors and, most of all, by employees,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;He&#8217;s not going anywhere.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Mason has a close working relationship with co-founder Brad Keywell, as well as Groupon co-founder and Chairman Eric Lefkofsky.</p>
<p>In fact, despite other business interests, Lefkofsky has been very involved in all key decisions with Mason.</p>
<p>That job, presumably, would fall to the new COO, which Groupon should be hiring sooner rather than later.</p>
<p>&#8220;Groupon needs a world-class COO, who can manage hyper-growth, but also who knows that a No. 2 stays in the background while doing it,&#8221; said another source. &#8220;That&#8217;s a tall order.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Groupon has looked at a number of top execs, most specificially at former DoubleClick and Google exec David Rosenblatt. Sources said the high-profile exec did not want to play second fiddle to Mason or move to Chicago.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s moot now. Here is Georgiadis&#8217; bio at the Silicon Valley search giant, which shows why Groupon picked her:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Georgiadis is responsible for driving Google&#8217;s sales operations and strategies across regions, channels and products as well as leading the sales technology teams which enable the successful commercialization of Google’s products (e.g., AdWords, AdSense, display and mobile ads) with advertisers and publishers.</p>
<p>She also leads the company&#8217;s local and commerce businesses, working to extend services like Checkout, Google Places and commerce search to small and large businesses alike.</p>
<p>Before joining Google, Margo was a principal in Synetro Capital LLC, a private investment firm based in Chicago. She also spent five years as the executive vice president of card products and chief marketing officer of Discover Financial Services where she led a radical turnaround of business performance and revitalized its rewards leadership with award-winning new products, customer experience and marketing. Prior to Discover, Margo was a partner at McKinsey and Company for 15 years in London and Chicago. She was a leader in the firm’s marketing and retail practices, and also co-founded and led the customer acquisition and management and retail marketing practices.</p>
<p>She has a bachelor&#8217;s degree in economics from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Cyber Monday reached a record-breaking level this year with more than $1 billion dollars spent online, making it the heaviest U.S. online shopping day ever.</p>
<p>Those estimates, <a href="http://www.comscoredatamine.com/2010/12/cyber-monday-e-commerce-sales-2005-2010/">provided by comScore</a>, include <em>any</em> transaction conducted over the fixed Internet, either from home or work.</p>
<p><a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ATDCyber-Monday-05-101.jpg"><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ATDCyber-Monday-05-101-275x164.jpg" alt="" title="comScore&#039;s Cyber Monday U.S. Online Spending Estimates in Millions 2005-2010" width="275" height="164" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-126" /></a>That means the record-breaking year also included the intangibles in our lives that you can&#8217;t touch or feel, and can&#8217;t ship in a box, like e-books and music, and virtual goods, such as a Gingerbread House or a Poinsettia to brighten up your FarmVille home for the holidays.</p>
<p>While likely still a small percentage of the $1 billion-plus in sales (comScore wasn&#8217;t willing to break down the numbers), companies like Zynga that develop many popular social games on Facebook didn&#8217;t waste any time taking advantage of the shopping frenzy that hits the Monday after Thanksgiving as people return to work and click to buy.</p>
<p>Sales spiked as Zynga kicked off the week with a new holiday lineup. On FrontierVille, users were offered mystery animals, like a polar bear wearing a Santa hat and a penguin sporting a reindeer hat. The second most popular decoration of the day was a blanket of snow for the player&#8217;s homestead. It also debuted holiday cheer in FarmVille with a winter horse-drawn carriage and a Santa Gnome as two of the top-selling items.</p>
<p><a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ATDFarmville_Cropswither.jpg"><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ATDFarmville_Cropswither-275x187.jpg" alt="" title="Crops whithering on Zynga&#039;s Farmville" width="275" height="187" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-127" /></a>But it wasn&#8217;t all about decorations. On Monday, Zynga offered its most expensive virtual item in FarmVille&#8217;s history. The so-called &#8220;Unwither Ring,&#8221; which has been offered only two other times, costs 250 in Farm Cash (roughly $40). Players who are willing to splurge will never have their crops wither again&#8211;a situation that occurs if you show up to plow too late. And if you are looking for something special for that certain someone, the Unwither Ring is also available as a gift.</p>
<p>Santa Clara, Calif.-based PlaySpan, which offers monetization platform services to 1,000-plus online games and social networks, was willing to be a little more specific about Cyber Monday&#8217;s spike. Sales of PlaySpan’s game card&#8211;available in North America at 7-Eleven, Rite Aid and other stores&#8211;were up 69 percent on Black Friday, compared to the previous week. Its corresponding marketplace, which features virtual goods, also reported a substantial increase in purchases over the weekend. The bump in sales increased 11 percent from Thursday through Sunday, compared to the same period a week earlier.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With Thanksgiving fast approaching, so, too, comes the start of the holiday shopping mayhem. Once again, digital cameras are rocketing to the top of wish lists, and once again, shoppers are tentatively entering electronics stores with bewildered looks on their faces. </p>

<p>To alleviate some of that shopping stress, I&#8217;ve compiled a buyer&#8217;s guide for different camera categories with prices and pointers to innovation. This year, manufacturers have improved photo-location tagging and are offering artistic photo alteration and clever ways to label images for future sharing on social networks. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Let&#8217;s Get Physical</h5>
<p>Consumers are starting to understand that better sensors make it possible to do things like taking photos in low light, which can really make a difference in photo quality. Some high-quality sensors are making their way into affordable models, like the CMOS sensor in Nikon&#8217;s $300 Coolpix S8100. High megapixel counts aren&#8217;t overly important, though more megapixels per photo still make it easier to zoom in while editing and give higher resolution in a larger photo or poster. A 14-megapixel camera like the Olympus FE-47 costs just $100, but a recent Consumer Reports review gave it low marks in handling shake and liquid-crystal-display screen quality. Optical zoom, or the physically manipulated distance between the camera and a subject, is still more important than digital zoom, and it&#8217;s easy to find many models with 7x optical zoom or better. LCD screens on digicams are so large that they leave little room for optical viewfinders, thus making built-in image stabilization all the more important. Image stabilization comes on nearly all new cameras. And more digicams than ever are capable of recording high-definition videos. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Breaking It Down</h5>
<p>Digital cameras can be divided into four broad categories: pocket-size, point-and-shoot, super- or mega-zooms and digital single-lens reflexes (D-SLRs). I&#8217;ll leave SLRs out of the discussion,  since they&#8217;re still primarily aimed at hobbyists who don&#8217;t mind the cost and effort of buying additional lenses, filters, flashes and other accessories. </p>

<p>Most pocket-size digital cameras cost between $100 and $300, weigh no more than seven ounces and lack optical viewfinders, forcing users to look at LCD screens to compose pictures. Most of these LCD viewing screens measure between 2.6 inches and 3.5 inches diagonally. Samsung, however, has an even bigger touch-screen LCD, at 3.7 inches, on its CL80 camera priced at $350. </p>
<p>These small but powerful machines capture images with 10, 12 or 14 megapixels and their optical zoom lenses usually range from 3x to 7x, though a handful of manufacturers are boosting their cameras&#8217; optical zooms. The $170 Casio Exilim EX-H5, for example, is equipped with a 10x optical zoom lens.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s point-and-shoot digital cameras are sleeker and more stylish than they used to be, though they remain somewhat bulkier than their pocket-size relatives. The point-and-shoot size can allow for better optical zoom lenses, and these models sometimes cost less than the pocket sizes. The $300 Canon PowerShot SX210 IS and $280 Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 are equipped with 14x and 12x optical zoom lenses, respectively. </p>

<p>Super-zoom or mega-zoom digital cameras satisfy people who want the power of a great zoom and optional manual settings without the hassle and expense of an SLR. At a glance, you might mistake these models for SLRs due to their bulkier bodies, and, in some cases, detachable (or hot-shoe) flashes. Nikon&#8217;s $400 Coolpix P100 offers a 26x wide-angle optical zoom, and Olympus&#8217;s $350 SP-800UZ is the smallest camera with a 30x wide-angle optical zoom. Both cameras have built-in flashes, but the Nikon includes an optical viewfinder while the Olympus offers only an LCD screen for viewing and capturing photos.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Shaking It Up</h5>
<p>Camera manufacturers are adding creative new features to these devices. Starting the week of Thanksgiving, Casio will provide Hybrid GPS on its $350 EX-H20G, which geotags (adds digital location information to) images indoors where GPS satellite signals can&#8217;t reach. This works using a combined GPS radio and motion sensor to measure the direction in which the camera has moved, and how fast. When you&#8217;re back in satellite range, the camera corrects the geotag by cross-referencing its own estimates with satellite-provided latitude and longitude. </p>
<p>Olympus now has art filters, which let you view your subject with special effects before capturing the photo. Some filters supply gentle sepia, soft focus or grainy film. There is also a drawing filter, which makes a subject instantly appear as a sketch. </p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s $150 PL90 model has a pop-out USB arm that reminds me a lot of the pop-out USB connector on Cisco&#8217;s popular Flip camcorders. Samsung&#8217;s USB arm eliminates the need for messy wires, or the removal of a memory card to transfer photos from a digicam to a PC. </p>

<p>Many cameras have and continue to supply guides that appear on screen as a photo is being captured. Sony&#8217;s NEX-5 offers this, and the Olympus Live Guide let you preview photo adjustments—like brightness or color saturation—on the screen as you make them. Nikon&#8217;s Scene Auto Selector, found in the Coolpix P7000, Coolpix S8100 and Coolpix S80, will automatically adjust the camera&#8217;s settings so users can stop worrying about scrolling through menus to select the right scene from a list. </p>
<p>Fujifilm offers the only true (not simulated) three-dimensional digital camera in its $500 FinePix REAL 3D W3, which I reviewed in August. These 3D images can be seen through the camera&#8217;s LCD viewing screen but not on laptops or television sets unless they&#8217;re 3D-capable and you&#8217;re wearing 3D glasses.</p>
<p>Kodak is trying to encourage sharing with its cameras by including a Share button that, when pressed, digitally tags images and videos with labels for Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Kodak Gallery or email, then automatically sends the photos to those places when you next plug the camera into a PC.</p>
<p>One last warning: Don&#8217;t be seduced by lower prices or better technology alone. Be sure you try a camera in the store before buying it. The way it feels or works for you is just as important as any technological specification.</p>

<p>Today, this no longer appears to be the case&#8211;at least in Japan. There, the models will be <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9176468/Apple_to_SIM_lock_Japanese_iPads">SIM-locked to Softbank Mobile</a>, which has evidently negotiated an exclusivity deal for the device. Softbank is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in Japan, so I suppose this shouldn’t come as shock. Still, it is a bit of surprise, since <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704423504575211433213811098.html">NTT DoCoMo President Ryuji Yamada</a> said in an earnings call last month that the company would sell iPad-compatible micro-SIM cards in time for the device’s launch in the country.</p>
<p>Evidently, Apple (AAPL) has been pleased enough with Softbank’s support for the iPhone to tweak the multiple-carrier distribution plan it had intended for the iPad outside the U.S. Either that or the company has always been open to international SIM-lock exclusivity deals for the device, given the right terms.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked Apple for comment and will update here if I&#8217;m offered one.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Along with many other people, I&#8217;ll spend hours flying with young children this holiday season to visit family and, like many parents, I&#8217;d do anything within reason to keep my young children busy on a crowded airplane.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of old-fashioned analog activities—books and crayons—but they&#8217;re not enough when you&#8217;re cooped up for six hours on a plane. In advance of a cross-country flight on Wednesday, my two kids and I spent several days trying out the most versatile and convenient gadget—offering movies, games and other electronic media—for keeping us entertained.</p>
<p>We looked at Apple&#8217;s iPod Touch, a Sony (SNE) PSPgo and a Nintendo DSi. Sony and Nintendo have updated their PlayStation Portable and DS game players with features aimed at going beyond traditional gaming. Apple (AAPL) is been promoting the iPod touch&#8217;s game capabilities.</p>
<p>Nintendo has done a lot to push the boundaries of gaming, with the Wii and other products. But the $169.99 DSi isn&#8217;t the entertainment Swiss army knife the iPod Touch and PSPgo are. It doesn&#8217;t play movies, for example—a big minus for my 2-year-old son, who is too young to be patient with most games.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s still a fun game-player, though, with popular titles for young kids, including two that are big with my 6-year-old daughter: the Nintendogs virtual pet and Pokemon adventure games, which run about $30 a title. One big change Nintendo made to the DSi is the addition of two cameras that are used in fun games, like the ones that put a player&#8217;s photo alongside other characters. One simple camera application lets you distort and doodle on images.</p>
<p>Nintendo and Sony also have followed the lead of the App Store—Apple&#8217;s online clearinghouse for iPhone and iPod Touch software—by letting users download software directly to the DSi and PSPgo over a Wi-Fi connection. It is more convenient than keeping track of a lot of external game cartridges and discs. Compared with the more than 100,000 titles in the App Store, however, Nintendo&#8217;s DSi Shop is sparsely stocked. It had only two free applications and about 90 titles, mostly costing $2 to $8.</p>
<p>One free DSi titles, Flipnote Studio, was a huge hit with my 6-year-old. It let her create an electronic version of an old-fashioned flip book, where you animate sketches by flipping pages. The DSi has only 256 megabytes of built-in storage, good for about a dozen games, though users can expand that with a storage card. </p>
<p>With the $249.99 PSPgo, Sony got rid of the old proprietary disc format for movies and games used in older PSP models, replacing it with 16 gigabytes of built-in flash storage onto which users can download games, movies and other content. The change allowed Sony to make a sleeker device with controls that slide away under its crisp color display. </p>
<p>The iPod Touch is still slimmer and easier to tuck into a pocket. A model with eight gigabytes sells for $199, while one with 32 gigabytes sells for $299.</p>
<p>The PSPgo&#8217;s display is slightly wider than that on the iPod Touch, but isn&#8217;t touch-sensitive. Still, the PSPgo and iPod Touch are fine for watching movies. They&#8217;re more convenient on airplanes than fumbling with a laptop and DVDs. And users can wirelessly download movies and games onto the PSPgo from Sony&#8217;s online PlayStation Store. I found it faster, though, to do the transaction on my PC over a wired Internet connection, and load the material onto the PSPgo over a USB cable with Sony&#8217;s version of Apple&#8217;s iTunes application, called Media Go. Media Go runs only on Windows.</p>
<p>Prices for movies on the iTunes and PlayStation Stores were mostly the same at $14.99 for new releases and $9.99 for older ones. Rentals are $3.99. Both stores had a similar selection of new releases, but the PlayStation Store lacked some kid titles that were on iTunes, such as &#8220;Toy Story.&#8221; There is also a directory of free podcasts on iTunes that makes it easy to download free videos to the iPod Touch, including kid-friendly material such as NASA space-shuttle landings and &#8220;Sesame Street&#8221; clips.</p>
<p>Games for PSPgo tend to be more intricate than those for iPod Touch, but that comes at a price. While Sony sells cheaper games, many are in the $19 to $30 range. I liked an adventure game called &#8220;Little Big Planet&#8221; starring a character called Sack Boy—for $39.99.</p>
<p>That price is steep compared with all the inexpensive and free content on the App Store for the iPod Touch. My kids liked a lot of it: a free dress-up game called &#8220;Dress Chica&#8221; and a $1.99 snowball-fight game called &#8220;Grinchmas.&#8221; My son particularly loved a free, beautifully illustrated short book called &#8220;Voodoo Doll&#8217;s Halloween Story.&#8221; My 6-year-old spent hours with a free math-drills program.</p>
<p>I found the iPod Touch offers the best entertainment options for young kids at bargain prices. And that is a gift for parents.</p>

But many tech-oriented Verizon loyalists gripe about the carrier&#8217;s high-end smart phones, which haven&#8217;t matched the cachet and versatility of the Apple iPhone sold by AT&#038;T (T). In fact, some Verizon customers have switched to AT&#038;T simply to get an iPhone.</p>

<p>But this week, Verizon (VZ) is rolling out a device that finally gives it a more credible alternative. This new $200 phone is the Motorola Droid and it&#8217;s the first Verizon model to run Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android smart-phone operating system. I&#8217;ve been testing the Droid, and while it has some significant drawbacks, I regard it as a success overall. It&#8217;s the best super-smart phone Verizon offers, the best Motorola (MOT) phone I&#8217;ve tested and the best hardware so far to run Android. I can recommend the Droid to Verizon loyalists who have lusted for a better smart phone, but don&#8217;t want to switch networks.</p>
<p>Like the iPhone, the Droid is really a powerful hand-held computer that happens to make phone calls, and is a platform for numerous third-party programs, or apps. Currently, Android offers over 12,000 apps. That is just a fraction of the 100,000 apps available for the iPhone, but it&#8217;s well above what the newer BlackBerry or Palm (PALM) phones offer.</p>
<p>The Droid is also the first phone that runs the 2.0 version of Android, which sands off some of the rough edges of Google&#8217;s platform and adds some features—notably, a free voice-prompted turn-by-turn navigation program. Android still isn&#8217;t as slick or fluid as the iPhone&#8217;s OS, in my view, but it has some functionality Apple (AAPL) omits, including the ability to run multiple third-party apps simultaneously.</p>
<p>The Droid is a handsome, squared-off device with a gorgeous, huge, high-resolution screen, bigger and sharper than the iPhone&#8217;s. There&#8217;s also a slide-out physical keyboard. It&#8217;s only a tad longer and thicker than the Apple product. But it&#8217;s 25% heavier, which makes it less comfortable to carry around in a pocket.</p>
<p>The Droid also has a higher-resolution camera than the iPhone&#8217;s: five megapixels versus three megapixels. And the camera has a flash, which the Apple lacks. In my tests, pictures came out OK, though not dazzling, and videos I shot were quite good.</p>

Motorola&#8217;s Droid</div>
<p>The Droid&#8217;s large 3.7-inch screen looked great, but it lacks multitouch features, such as two-finger zooming, and it seemed less responsive than some other touch screens I&#8217;ve tested.</p>
<p>Battery life is listed at a whopping 6.4 hours, and, in my tests, the Droid easily lasted through the day on a single charge. Phone calls were crisp and clear, and I never suffered a dropped call. Verizon&#8217;s network was speedy and reliable for Web surfing, email and social networking. I copied some songs and videos onto the Droid by plugging it into a computer, and all played properly.</p>
<p>The Droid, whose $200 price comes only after a $100 mail-in rebate, requires a minimum $70 monthly service plan for two years, and text messaging costs extra. It comes with 16 gigabytes of memory, in the form of a removable card, and can handle up to a 32-gigabyte card. </p>
<p>Unfortunately for lovers of physical keyboards, I found the one on the Droid to be pretty awful. It has flat, cramped keys that induce too many typing errors, yet lacks auto-correction. I found myself using the virtual on-screen keyboard, which was pretty fast and accurate for me, and did include auto-correction.</p>
<p>Another downside: The Droid&#8217;s screen has only three panels for displaying apps, versus 11 on the iPhone, and some large apps, called widgets, hog much of the space on these panels.</p>
<p>Like the Palm Pre, the Droid tries to integrate social networking with contacts, though in a more limited way. It handles Google&#8217;s Gmail and Facebook, as well as Microsoft Exchange for corporate email and data. A nice feature lets you tap a contact&#8217;s picture and get instant options for ways to communicate.</p>
<p>The Droid can do some cool tricks with a couple of $30 optional docks, one for the car and one for the desk or nightstand. When placed in the car dock, the phone automatically displays a horizontal view with large buttons, including one for the built-in navigation system. In my tests, this navigation system worked pretty well, even showing photos of certain intersections. But it also gave me a couple of bad directions, such as sending me the wrong way at a fork in the road.</p>
<p>When placed in the desktop dock, the Droid displays the time and a different row of large icons from when it&#8217;s in the car dock, including music and an alarm clock.</p>
<p>I ran into one odd flaw with my test Droid, and with a second test unit tried by a colleague. Neither could send a photo via multimedia messaging to either my iPhone or her BlackBerry. Verizon was able to send pictures this way to my iPhone from other Droids, and it suspects some flaw in our test units.</p>
<p>The Droid is potentially a big win for Verizon, Motorola and Google, as well as for loyal Verizon customers. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is the week when Microsoft finally starts selling Windows 7, its much-improved successor to the disappointing Vista version of Windows. PC makers, who have suffered from Vista&#8217;s poor reputation, will begin touting models that come with Windows 7, which I praised in <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20091007/a-windows-to-help-you-forget/">a detailed review</a> earlier this month.</p>
<p>But Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) historic rival, Apple (AAPL), isn&#8217;t sitting still. After releasing its own new operating system, Snow Leopard, in August, Apple this week is rolling out new versions of two of the best- known Macs: its iconic all-in-one iMac desktop, and its least-expensive laptop, the MacBook.</p>

<p>Though both new Macs sport important improvements, they are evolutionary, not revolutionary, and neither follows the industry trend toward bargain-basement prices. The MacBook is still $999, and the iMac still starts at $1,199, though the company is giving users more power and features at those same price points. You can pay much less for laptops and desktops from competitors like Dell (DELL) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ).</p>
<p>Apple is, however, introducing one revolutionary product this week: a $69 mouse called the Magic Mouse. It&#8217;s the first mouse I&#8217;ve seen whose entire surface acts like a laptop trackpad, and allows fingertip multitouch gestures for scrolling and flipping through lists, photos and Web pages on the screen, while still performing traditional cursor movements and clicking. This mouse comes with the new iMac and will be usable on most other Macs as well, once Apple offers a software update for them. It worked well for me.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing these new computers for a few days, and I can recommend both. The new iMacs have spectacular screens that are larger and sport much higher resolutions than those on their predecessors. They also add more memory capacity, bigger hard disks and faster processors.</p>
<p>The new $999, 13&#8243; MacBook now includes most of the key features of the similar-sized MacBook Pro, which costs $200 more. These include a large multitouch trackpad, significantly enhanced battery life, and a brighter screen. Despite its lower price, the lowly MacBook comes with a 56% larger hard disk (250 gigabytes versus 160) than the Pro model.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">The New iMacs</h5>
<p>Apple has kept the basic design of the iMac, which looks like a stand-alone monitor but has a powerful computer built in. But the new models have larger, wider screens that have been re-sized to match up with high-definition video. The $1,199 base model has a 21.5&#8243; screen, compared to the old 20&#8243; screen, and has 17% higher resolution. </p>
<p>The highest-priced models, at $1,699 and $1,999, have huge 27&#8243; screens, versus 24 inches for the older models, and they have a 60% increase in resolution.</p>
<p>The $1,199 base iMac has 4 gigabytes of memory, double the amount in the prior base model, and a 500 gigabyte hard disk, up from 320 gigabytes. The costlier editions have a one terabyte hard disk, which is roughly 1,000 gigabytes. The top model has a more powerful graphics card and a heavy-duty processor.</p>
<p>All the iMacs now have slots for SD flash memory cards, and the large-screen models can act as external monitors.</p>
<p>In my tests, using a 27&#8243; model, the machine was fast and the screen was brilliant at displaying hi-res photos and high-definition video. Its width allowed me to treat it like two monitors, with, say a Microsoft Word document on the left and a Web page on the right.</p>
<p>One downside: the $1,499 model now has a smaller screen—21.5&#8243; versus 24&#8243;—though it has a larger hard disk and better graphics card.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">The New MacBook</h5>
<p>This 13&#8243; laptop, like its predecessor, is shiny white plastic, but has been redesigned to have more-rounded edges and a rubbery non-slip bottom. It now has the Pro&#8217;s large Apple trackpad, which acts as both a huge mouse button and a surface for fingertip gestures like two-finger scrolling, and resizing and rotating photos. It&#8217;s still 1.08&#8243; thick—but is a bit longer and wider than the older model, though it weighs less: 4.7 pounds versus 5 pounds.</p>
<p>Apple has dropped the FireWire port from this machine, as well as its ability to be run via a remote control. And it still lacks an SD card slot. But it now has a large sealed battery that Apple claims can last up to 7 hours between charges. On my tough battery test, where I turn off all power-saving features and play music constantly, the MacBook lasted just over five hours. In normal use, I estimate it could easily top six hours.</p>
<p>In my tests, this MacBook was fast and reliable using a wide variety of programs. It started up cold in a mere 22 seconds, and was ready to go after a restart, with several programs running, in 44 seconds. For anyone on a budget, it&#8217;s a better deal than the 13&#8243; MacBook Pro, especially considering its larger hard disk.</p>
<p>These new models now round out a full line of refreshed Macs, but they will face stiff new competition from a horde of PCs running the new and better version of Windows.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are a lot of big brains out there trying to use technology to make ads smarter and more efficient. Example: <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_25/b4136052151611.htm">Google&#8217;s (GOOG) plan to roll out its own ad exchange</a> this summer.</p>
<p>And there are lots of marketers trying their best to ignore technology and keep their ads as dumb as possible. Example: Sprint&#8217;s email to me this morning trying to convince me to sign a new contract so I can snag a free &#8220;Katana Eclipse X&#8221; from Sanyo. Here&#8217;s the pitch (click to enlarge):</p>

<p>Nothing against the Katana Eclipse X, by the way. I&#8217;m sure it&#8217;s a fine phone. But here&#8217;s the thing: Sprint (S) has my email address because I am a customer. I&#8217;ve been one for a decade. And so Sprint knows that:</p>
<ul>
<li> I own a BlackBerry 8830, and that&#8230;</li>
<li>I spend $100 a month for an all-you-can eat plan (plus another $60 a month for a broadband wireless card!), and that&#8230;</li>
<li>My contract expires in a couple of weeks.</li>
</ul>
<p>So if I were Sprint, I&#8217;d be trying very hard to convince me not to ditch the company for AT&amp;T (T) and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) new <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090608/wwdc-2009-keynote-live-iphone-3gs/">iPhone 3G S</a>, which looks awesome.</p>
<p>And again, nothing against the Katana, which is apparently available in <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10076776-1.html">&#8220;Nightlife Black and Hypnotic Pink.&#8221;</a> But it&#8217;s no BlackBerry, and it&#8217;s no iPhone. And it&#8217;s not a Pre, the phone that Sprint and Palm (PALM) are positioning  to compete against those two.</p>
<p>But I&#8217;ve yet to get an email from Sprint telling me that the Pre exists&#8211;perhaps the company hopes that I&#8217;ll be wowed by its new <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090604/hey-ladies-heres-the-first-palm-pre-ad/">woman-friendly TV ads</a>. Or what about Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) new &#8220;Tour,&#8221; which is coming out this summer and looks great? Nope. Had to learn about that one by reading a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-blackberry-tour-coming-soon-to-verizon-sprint-2009-6">blog</a>.</p>
<p>So while I worry that I&#8217;ll regret typing this, here goes: Dear Sprint: You know where I live, what I own and how much I spend. You know I&#8217;m a free agent at the end of the month. Want to keep me? Start pitching.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re tired of the basic BlackBerry design (small keyboard with a small screen) or the iPhone design (a virtual keyboard on a large touch screen) you might prefer a device with a roomy physical keyboard that stays out of your way, hiding under a large screen until you need it. Over six years ago, a small company called Danger introduced just such a device, called the Sidekick.</p>
<p>Since then, Danger has been acquired by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and there have been many iterations of the Sidekick. This Monday, yet another version of the Sidekick will be released: the Sidekick LX. Its swing-out screen design hasn&#8217;t changed much over the years, but competitors have since produced several other devices that also have screens that move to reveal QWERTY keyboards &#8212; including the Google (GOOG) Android G1 phone, whose chief designer also helped create the Sidekick.</p>

<p>This week, I tested the T-Mobile Sidekick LX to see how this old chestnut fared with some new polishing inside and out. It still bears the flashy, hip features that distinguished older Sidekicks, and newly integrated social-networking apps for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter enhance these traits. A Download Catalog works like Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) popular App Store by bringing games, apps, themes and sounds directly to the device.</p>
<p>But this Sidekick&#8217;s pricing doesn&#8217;t make much sense in our current recession: It will cost $250 after a mail-in rebate for new T-Mobile customers who sign up for a two-year contract; current T-Mobile customers who are eligible for an upgrade will pay $200 after the same discounts.</p>
<p>For $200, you could buy Apple&#8217;s iPhone or Research In Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Storm, which both have touch screens and come with Microsoft Exchange support that synchronizes the device with corporate email accounts. (T-Mobile says the Sidekick LX should be able to get Exchange support from the device&#8217;s Download Catalog &#8220;in the coming months,&#8221; but wouldn&#8217;t be more specific.) The Sidekick also lacks Wi-Fi capability, which is also true for the BlackBerry Storm but not so for the iPhone, which works with 3G or Wi-Fi networks.</p>
<p>The absence of a touch screen is glaring on such an expensive device, especially one with a screen this large. It&#8217;s easy to imagine using a finger to flick and spin the Sidekick&#8217;s on-screen menu wheel, tapping on one to open it. Instead, you&#8217;re stuck using a trackball to repeatedly scroll through a crowded, 15-menu wheel.</p>

<p>The LX is the thinnest Sidekick yet, but it still looked rather large lying next to my BlackBerry Curve 8300 and an iPhone; it measures 1.3 and 2.16 cubic inches larger than each, respectively. Compared with past Sidekicks, this one has a design that feels flatter thanks to a thin flip-out screen that smoothly blends into the device in its closed position. You have to lift up the nestled-in screen before it turns to flip out, and I found it a little harder to open with just a push of my left thumb.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX, however, has some hearty extras including a generous 3.2-inch display, a 3G connection that makes it easy to use for quickly browsing the Web, built-in GPS and a 3.2-megapixel camera (like the BlackBerry Storm and new BlackBerry Curve 8900 cameras). It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD card, but this memory card can be accessed only by pulling off the device&#8217;s back panel instead of via a card slot on the side.</p>
<p>I brought the Sidekick LX with me for a weekend in Boston and its good-quality camera came in handy as I wandered Copley Square and snapped photos of still-blooming tulips in bright colors. I signed into my Facebook and Twitter accounts, and updates from these networks flashed across the top of the screen in banner-like news flashes.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX can play YouTube videos, and can record its own videos for uploading and sharing to Web sites. Its colorful screen has over twice the resolution of its predecessor and is 0.6-inch larger.</p>
<p>But a few awkward software designs left me scratching my head. After I uploaded a photo from the Sidekick LX to Facebook, I was left in the Facebook app, rather than my device&#8217;s photo album, where I started and wanted to be. MySpace updates are pushed to the Sidekick LX as they happen, but Facebook automatically updates only once an hour. Twitter can be set to check tweets as often as every five minutes, but, by default, it&#8217;s set to check only every 30 minutes &#8212; a glacial pace for Twitter fans.</p>
<p>I used the Download Catalog to buy a few apps, games and ringtones for my Sidekick, including a $6.99 game of &#8220;Who Wants to Be a Millionaire 2009&#8243;; a $2.99 flashlight app; and a $2.49 ringtone that played 15 seconds of Katy Perry&#8217;s song &#8220;Thinking of You.&#8221; T-Mobile says there are thousands of items in this catalog.</p>
<p>Calls placed and received on the Sidekick were remarkably clear-sounding to me and the friends I spoke with. Dialing numbers could be a little frustrating because, as was the case with former Sidekicks, you&#8217;ll need to open the flip-out screen to dial the number and then close it so you can hold the phone up to your ear. But most people will call friends in their address books and won&#8217;t need to use the number keypad.</p>
<p>The Sidekick&#8217;s 15 menus are simply too many to scroll through. I would prefer it if several categories were combined into one, such as Phone, myFaves (T-Mobile&#8217;s list of five friends you call), Phone Messaging and Address Book. Currently, these are listed as four separate menus. Simultaneously pressing the Sidekick&#8217;s Jump and Cancel buttons brings up a Quick Access view of recently opened menus and unread messages, and this eases navigation.</p>
<p>For its price, the Sidekick LX should be shipped with Microsoft Exchange already working, and all of its social-networking apps should have better updating capabilities. But most of all, the Sidekick&#8217;s big screen is just begging for multitouch in place of a trackball. If these features were part of the Sidekick LX 2009, it might be worth its price.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nintendo Co.&#8217;s strategy of creating videogames with simple graphics that anyone can play has worked well on its Wii and portable DS. Earlier this month, the company released the $170 Nintendo DSi in an attempt to spruce up its three-year-old DS Lite and 5 1/2-year-old DS. At first glance, this plain, rectangular clamshell with dual screens appears to be the same as its predecessors.</p>

<p>But a deeper dive into the DSi reveals its improvements. It now has two cameras: one facing the user and another facing out; its earlier iterations had none. It also now has a SecureDigital memory-card slot, so you can plug in an SD card and listen to AAC music files from iTunes on your DSi, which now works as a portable music player, or expand the DSi&#8217;s storage capacity.</p>
<p>The DSi is also Wi-Fi enabled in a more secure way than previous models and can be used to buy and download games and applications directly from Nintendo&#8217;s DSi Shop online marketplace. This solves the problem of carrying around multiple game cartridges or losing them, but might bother people who like swapping games with one another. The DSi&#8217;s Web browser is also faster than its predecessors.</p>
<p>These physical changes affect the way the DSi works in good and bad ways. For example, its two cameras can be used for photo-related games like WarioWare: Snapped!, a clever photo-booth-like game that tricks you into making funny faces while secretly taking your picture.</p>
<p>But while the DSi&#8217;s newly added SD card slot expands the device&#8217;s memory and brings music on to the DSi, this replaces another slot that was used for playing GameBoy Advance games on the older DS and DS Lite. The physical slot for DS games remains.</p>
<p>Overall, the Nintendo DSi is a fun little portable gaming device. I&#8217;ve been fooling around with it for a few weeks, testing games and applications since they became available on April 5. My DSi tapped into various Wi-Fi networks with no trouble and its browser was straightforward and zippy. The DSi speakers sounded great for a tiny device. On the downside, the DSi Shop is still in its infancy so only 10 games and apps are available there. The DSi retains an aging, boxy look &#8212; a design that could have been freshened up.</p>
<p>Until Oct. 5, Nintendo is running a promotion for its DSi Shop, which accepts points to buy games and applications; $1 is equal to about 100 points. People who buy the DSi will receive 1,000 free points for the DSi Shop. New content is added to the shop each Monday. This content ranges in price from free to 800 points or more. I bought and downloaded a variety of things, ranging from the free Web browser to a 200-point magic-trick game called Master of Illusion Express: Funny Face. I also downloaded WarioWare: Snapped! for 500 points.</p>
<p>Points for the DSi Shop can be purchased online or at retail stores and they&#8217;re sold in increments of 2,000 for $20. Before purchasing and downloading, a notification with each game and app tells you how many &#8220;blocks,&#8221; or memory, it will take up on your DSi. WarioWare: Snapped!, for example, took up 61 blocks. This information really doesn&#8217;t mean anything unless you go to your system settings to see how many blocks you&#8217;ve used and how many remain. By default, each DSi is shipped with 256 megabytes of flash memory or 1,024 blocks.</p>
<p>The DSi cameras are only .3 megapixel each and don&#8217;t use a zoom or flash, but photos taken with them looked colorful and clear on the DSi&#8217;s two 3.25-inch, 256&#215;192-pixel-resolution screens. Instead of sending photos to friends directly from the DSi, you have to save them to the SD card and transfer them to a computer to share them.</p>

<p>Nintendo says the &#8220;i&#8221; in DSi is meant to represent the personal aspect of the device since it has built-in tools to let you create your own content. For example, a game called DSi Sound lets you sing or hum into a built-in microphone, then rearrange your recording to change its pitch, speed and sound &#8212; or even to add harmony. AAC music files pulled on to the device via SD card can be changed in various ways, though they can&#8217;t be saved. Photos taken with the cameras can be morphed in nine different ways including cutting different photos and piecing them together on the screen.</p>
<p>The DSi has parental controls, which the DS and DS Lite didn&#8217;t have. These controls let parents turn off Web browsing completely. A better compromise might have been to let parents limit kids to certain sites. The parental controls can also put restrictions on the DSi so it can&#8217;t play games with certain ratings. For instance, if a child goes to school and tries to play a friend&#8217;s M-rated game in his DSi, it won&#8217;t work.</p>
<p>The DSi works well as a music player, albeit a lot chunkier than an iPod. A high-capacity SD memory card could potentially add hundreds of songs to the device, and you can press buttons to play on-screen instruments in the background while listening to your tunes. If you&#8217;re using headphones (not included with the device) and you close the DSi, music will keep playing through the headphones so you can put the DSi in a bag and go. In past versions, the DSi went to sleep when closed. It plays only AAC files, not MP3s.</p>
<p>I used the DSi&#8217;s Web browser to read some news on <a href="http://WSJ.com">WSJ.com</a> and to check my Web-based email, plugging letters and symbols into the touch-screen keyboard. A stylus can be used for precise lettering, but I got by with my fingernails.</p>
<p>The DSi games are approachable for all types of people, and are obviously not geared toward the graphics-rich visuals that hard-core gamers adore. I liked the way they incorporated the device&#8217;s touch screen for drawings and its cameras for photo games.</p>
<p>The Nintendo DSi is $20 more than the price of the original DS, and $40 more than the DS Lite. But its two cameras, snappy Web browser and music-player capabilities make it a likable and well-rounded device that any family member could use.</p>

<p>It has been assumed that Fossett, who has since been declared legally dead, crashed, and the search for him was suspended a month ago.</p>
<p>After Fossett&#8217;s disappearance, tens of thousands of Web users mounted an unusual online search mission, studying satellite photographs of a huge swath of ground.</p>
<p>The images were uploaded by Amazon (AMZN) to its Mechanical Turk, in an attempt to find a possible crash site.</p>
<p>Google Earth (GOOG) was also used in the effort, which is called &#8220;crowdsourcing.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Turk was also used in another unsuccessful search for Microsoft (MSFT) techie Jim Gray, who went missing on a boat off the coast of California.</p>
<p>Computer-aided image-scanning technology has also been used in the search for Fossett, to no avail, until this very old-school break was made.</p>
