<p>Earlier this week, I went for a visit to the San Francisco HQ of Circa, the startup that always seems to get lumped into the mobile news reader aggregation category with others such as Pulse, Zite and Flipboard. While it shares some obvious similarities &#8212; there is no original news gathering going on here with all of them &#8212; the approach that it has taken is different and a bit more nifty.</p>
<p>Built currently for the Apple iPhone, the mobile-designed app is aimed at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121015/breaking-news-is-broken-and-circa-wants-to-fix-it/">rejiggering how readers consume breaking news</a>. To do this, a team of writers crunches and munches small bits of information about a range of current news events from a variety of sources and forms them into separable flashcard lists to make up a story.</p>
<p>Circa is using the odd phrase &#8212; &#8220;atomic units&#8221; &#8212; to describe the end product, which users can swipe through quickly to get the key elements of a story, along with adds of art, photos, maps or graphs. While some disparagingly call it a Cliff Notes for breaking news, it is much more like a television report or a just-the-facts feed from wires services. If you want to get even more digital, it reminds me of a smart and collated version of Twitter.</p>
<p>While it could use more sourcing &#8212; I like to know from whence my atomic units are born &#8212; it&#8217;s a still a good way to consume news on the fly on a smartphone. Users can also follow favorites stories, which are updated and which increases engagement. </p>
<p>I talked about it all with CEO Matt Galligan, one of Circa&#8217;s several founders, as well where the next version of the product is going (expect an Google Android and perhaps an tablet version, for example) </p>
<p>How Circa is going to make money is a good question &#8212; it has only a few million in seed funding &#8212; since it does require people to create the stories, rather than some algorithm. But the market is hot in the acquisition arena for this category. Both Pulse and Zite have been bought (LinkedIn and CNN), as well as the decidedly less substantive <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130325/yahoo-acquires-hipster-mobile-news-reader-summly-like-we-said-it-might/">Summly (Yahoo picked it up for the excessive price of $30 million)</a>, so one could see Circa also getting snapped up at some point.</p>

<p>Groupon&#8217;s board gave the 32-year-old chief executive the heave-ho on Thursday, after Mason presided over the controversial and one of the fastest-growing young companies in recent memory. Time will tell whether Mason will be remembered for his antics and for being loosey-goosey with accounting rules, or for building a new marketing category with a company he steered to $5 billion in annual billings and an IPO faster than most companies on the planet.</p>

<p>As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121210/in-seismic-shift-new-coo-de-castro-shifts-yahoo-ad-sales-to-category-model-backed-by-the-marissa-halo/">I had previously reported</a>, Yahoo&#8217;s key business unit &#8212; its advertising sales force &#8212; is now getting details of a reorganization by its new leader, COO Henrique De Castro.</p>
<p>In making the changes, just weeks ahead of Yahoo&#8217;s annual sales conference in Las Vegas on Jan. 21, De Castro is borrowing rather heavily from the set-up of the powerful ad business at Google, from whence he came.</p>
<p>By shifting the sales organization to a &#8220;category&#8221; model, sales reps at the Silicon Valley Internet giant will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, across channels in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments, such as automotive, entertainment and packaged goods.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long sold its advertising in a regional and tiered organization against premium and performance inventory in display and search, designed to avoid vertical conflict. Thus, the sales staff have built up advertiser relationships across many areas, which will not work in the new system.</p>
<p>Sources inside the company said regional leaders will now be shifted to running various verticals. There will be support specialists for those areas, too. </p>
<p>Mark Ellis, who was most recently VP of North American sales and global partnerships, will pay a key role in the new org, said sources. It is not clear, though, what role Peter Foster, who has headed audience advertising, will play. Another high-ranking exec, Keith Kaplan, has apparently been shifted to focus on agency relationships.</p>
<p>As I had previously written, there are many different ways to organize sales, but making such major change has potentially large ramifications on Yahoo&#8217;s financial performance, at least in the short term, since advertising makes up the bulk of its revenue.</p>
<p>According to numerous sources inside Yahoo, the changes are causing some measure of worry and confusion across the salesforce at the company, since it comes after a lot of wrenching changes over the last year.</p>
<p>That includes the departure of well-regarded <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121017/mayer-tells-staff-barrett-officially-out-at-yahoo/">Chief Revenue Officer Michael Barrett</a> in mid-October, after De Castro got the COO job. He has left a large gap in sales leadership and in maintaining strong relationships with big advertisers and agencies. De Castro himself is not as well known in the ad marketplace, despite many years at Google in its sales organization.</p>
<p>He will likely have a more high-profile <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121226/yahoos-mayer-hoping-what-happens-with-big-advertisers-at-ces-doesnt-stay-in-vegas/">next week at the International CES</a>, the huge annual consumer electronics show taking place in Las Vegas, along with new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who was a top product exec at Google. The pair is planning on meeting with major ad clients while there, which is their first significant outreach to marketers since taking their new roles at Yahoo.</p>
<p>De Castro had outlined the new ad reorg plan immediately after a multiday offsite with top sales leaders several weeks ago, and said the changes would come at the very beginning of 2013.</p>
<p>The ad staff at Yahoo begin to hear of the changes on Friday, so it looks like De Castro has met his deadline.</p>

<p>So far in the six-month reign of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, there has been a pile of attention paid to the flashy cultural changes (free food!), much-needed rehauls of key mainstays (Flickr, Yahoo! Mail, homepage), a focus on attracting entrepreneurial talent (Hey, we got Max Levchin to join the board!) and, of course, the frequent mention of <em>mobilemobilemobile</em> by the former Google product exec.</p>
<p>But on the topic of where the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s search and display advertising business is headed &#8212; which is, of course, its key revenue and profit generator &#8212; it&#8217;s pretty much been crickets. </p>
<p>No longer, it seems, according to multiple sources inside and outside Yahoo. Mayer is planning a series of appearances at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show &#8212; which is taking place in Las Vegas in less than two weeks. </p>
<p>That includes sitting for a high-profile fireside chat with Starcom MediaVest Group Global CEO Laura Desmond in front of several hundred ad clients on Wednesday, January 9; organizing a plethora of one-on-one meetings; and throwing a Yahoo dinner party, as well as angling for invites to key parties thrown by others, such as MediaLink&#8217;s power player dinner on Tuesday, January 8.</p>
<p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121210/in-seismic-shift-new-coo-de-castro-shifts-yahoo-ad-sales-to-category-model-backed-by-the-marissa-halo/">previously reported</a>, the company is planning on having this much more prominent presence there in order to reset its sometime rocky relationship with advertisers.</p>
<p>And, not surprisingly, its big weapon at the giant annual confab will apparently be Mayer, who has not yet interfaced significantly with the company&#8217;s big ad clients since taking the top job in July. At CES, sources said, Yahoo is hoping the &#8220;Marissa Halo&#8221; &#8212; i.e. the excitement around the decidedly telegenic exec &#8212; will help boost its business.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important, since big agencies and advertisers have privately been grumbling about the lack of outreach by Yahoo and also how much more active execs at rivals such as Facebook, Google and AOL have been.</p>
<p>More than one source close to Yahoo said the dissatisfaction was being heard loud and clear at the company. &#8220;[Everyone will] take it as an opportunity to vent (again), while Yahoo promises a new beginning,&#8221; said one exec.</p>
<p>New beginnings will again be the case, though, with new COO Henrique De Castro also in place. He&#8217;s been making a series of moves to rejigger the ad business at Yahoo since he <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121015/yahoo-confirms-hiring-of-googles-de-castro-as-coo-like-i-said/">got there earlier in the fall</a>, also from Google, including shifting its sales process to a category model. </p>
<p>In addition, Yahoo execs have continued their noodling on whether or not to make significant ad tech purchases &#8212; with no major deals in place yet &#8212; along with improving the creaky performance of the company&#8217;s own owned-and-operated offerings.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s all in the hope that advertisers and agencies will reconnect with Yahoo after the nearly consistent CEO changes over the last year. For those keeping score, after Carol Bartz was fired in the fall of 2011, CEO Scott Thompson made his debut at CES in early 2012, touting Yahoo&#8217;s data prowess before being ousted only months later. He was followed by renewed efforts toward marketers by interim CEO Ross Levinsohn. </p>
<p>And now there&#8217;s Mayer. </p>
<p>Interestingly, while many major ad players are looking for more specifics about how Yahoo will improve its mobile, search and data products to give better insights to advertisers, they also are simply wanting to hear Mayer&#8217;s plans for Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;What I don&#8217;t see yet is what the vision for Yahoo is, articulating the bigger ideas than just presenting an assemblage of products,&#8221; said Rob Norman, chief digital officer of GroupM Global. &#8220;And what everyone would still like to see is what is the escape route from being a portal or even reemerging from what that means, so I am really interested in what she has to say.&#8221;</p>
<p>Added another top ad exec: &#8220;She really has not said anything yet about how she plans to capitalize on Yahoo&#8217;s strengths over the next year in the ad space. People are genuinely excited about Mayer, but the stakes are still high for her since everyone feels as if they have already given Yahoo a lot of extra chances.&#8221;</p>
<p>High stakes, indeed. But, then again, it <em>is</em> Vegas.</p>

<p>Michael Katz, one of Yahoo&#8217;s high-ranking online advertising execs, is leaving the company, according to a memo he sent out to staff on Friday.</p>
<p>Considered a savvy online ad player and a well-regarded entrepreneur, Katz came to the Silicon Valley Internet giant a year ago when it bought Interclick, the ad-targeting company he co-founded and headed, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111101/yahoo-buys-ad-network-interclick-for-270-million/"> for $270 million</a>.</p>
<p>Yahoo later used Interclick&#8217;s technology in its audience-buying platform called Genome. In a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120120/yahoo-reorgs-u-s-ad-sales-after-talent-departure-internal-memo-natch/">reorganization announced in January</a>, Katz was placed in charge of sales operations and data and performance optimization for Genome.</p>
<p>The data unit is at the center of efforts by Yahoo&#8217;s new CEO Marissa Mayer to turbocharge its ad business. </p>
<p>But the Katz missive, which is below in its entirety, clearly signaled that his departure was not an amicable one, which sources underscored was part of a larger rejiggering of the ad sales staff under new COO Henrique De Castro.</p>
<p>&#8220;As some of you are starting to learn, my last day with the company will be today,&#8221; wrote Katz on Friday. &#8220;Leaving Y! is not the hard part &#8212; how it happened and leaving all of you is what makes this difficult.&#8221;</p>
<p>How it happened, said several sources, was that Katz was suddenly told by HR head Jackie Reses last week that there was not a place for him, only days before a large 12-month retention bonus was to be paid out to him for the Interclick acquisition.</p>
<p>While it is an unusual thing to part on willfully difficult terms with an entrepreneur, as it sends a bad signal to others considering joining the company, Yahoo&#8217;s new leadership has been playing hardball with a lot of top execs it is parting ways with, and is also limiting departure packages.</p>
<p>Former marketing head Mollie Spillman, for example, was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120922/former-cmo-spillman-departs-yahoo/">suddenly let go</a> after she was replaced by former Lockerz CEO Kathy Savitt. And, though he had wanted to leave, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120925/yahoos-mayer-finally-parts-ways-with-cfo-tim-morse/">former CFO Tim Morse</a> was also told of his replacement in a swift exec house-cleaning move, as was former HR head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120810/exclusivr-yahoos-longtime-hr-head-david-windley-out/">David Windley</a>.</p>
<p>Of course, such moves are not unusual when a new set of leaders enters the corporate picture. That&#8217;s why many at Yahoo expect even more changes to come soon in the ad unit, with most assuming that Mayer and De Castro will bring in new staff they had previously worked with at Google.</p>
<p>Currently, top Yahoo ad execs include Peter Foster, GM of audience advertising at Yahoo; and Mark Ellis, VP of North American sales and global partnerships.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see what happens to them and others as part of a large ad reorg at Yahoo now taking place, which will definitely include a variety of departures and arrivals. One recent notable Yahoo ad exec departure, for example, was Debbie Menin, who headed entertainment and travel sales strategy, and is now a top sales exec at hot video entertainment network Machinima.</p>
<p>More will come in the new year, given that De Castro has recently briefed employees on a plan to move its sales organization to a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121210/in-seismic-shift-new-coo-de-castro-shifts-yahoo-ad-sales-to-category-model-backed-by-the-marissa-halo/">&#8220;category&#8221; model</a>. Simply put, that means its sales reps will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments.</p>
<p>That massive shift is not Katz&#8217;s to worry about anymore, it seems. Here&#8217;s his entire email to staff, which is a pretty eloquent one, as goodbye letters go:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Friends and Colleagues,</p>
<p>6 years ago if someone would have told me that the hardest part about building a business would be to one day say goodbye, I would not have believed them. As some of you are starting to learn, my last day with the company will be today. Leaving Y! is not the hard part &#8212; how it happened and leaving all of you is what makes this difficult. I will miss the daily interactions and will take with me the many memories. This has honestly been so much fun.</p>
<p>I have learned a lot along the way:</p>
<p>Sometimes winning looks like losing. If you don&#8217;t fail, you can&#8217;t progress and the stakes only get bigger as you go further down your path.</p>
<p>Be genuinely happy for those that are successful at reaching their goals. If you spend anytime wishing it were you, it will never be.</p>
<p>Stay humble, and never declare victory. </p>
<p>Approximately correct is better than definitely wrong. Do not let perfection be the enemy of excellence.</p>
<p>We are all human &#8212; we may make mistakes, we must forgive, forget, and move on together. </p>
<p>Treating people right is not an option.</p>
<p>Treat adults like adults and they will behave like adults. Rules are for children.</p>
<p>People and culture are everything. It&#8217;s about so much more than free food and parties, it cannot be forced and without it a business cannot succeed.</p>
<p>I consider myself so very lucky to have known a handful of loyal friends that took a chance, quit their jobs and risked a lot to build this business with me. Their loyalty and hard work helped interclick get off the ground and for that I will forever be grateful. The team they helped to build has truly made this the greatest place to work. Each and every one of you made interclick the very best company to work for.  </p>
<p>I would like to leave you all with a reminder of what together we built: </p>
<p>&#8211; A company that started with $27,000 and sold for $270,000,000</p>
<p>&#8211; A company that redefined the way that marketers think about audience targeting and data</p>
<p>&#8211; A company that went public in 2009 on NASDAQ defying all odds</p>

<p>In what will be a major shift in how the Silicon Valley Internet giant sells online advertising, Yahoo&#8217;s new COO Henrique De Castro has briefed employees on a plan to move its sales organization to a &#8220;category&#8221; model, according to numerous sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Simply put, that means its sales reps will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments, such as automotive, entertainment and packaged goods.</p>
<p>This is how Google, where both De Castro and CEO Marissa Mayer recently worked, conducts its ad sales efforts. (After copying free food and smartphones, staff evaluation efforts and more, <em>What Would Google Do</em> seems to be strategery at Yahoo these days.)</p>
<p>In contrast, Yahoo has long sold its advertising in a regional and tiered organization against premium and performance inventory in display and search.</p>
<p>The move from regional to vertical is a &#8220;seismic shift,&#8221; said one source quite accurately. That&#8217;s because Yahoo&#8217;s go-to-market efforts have been designed to avoid vertical conflict and its sales staff have built up advertiser relations across many areas. In a vertical organization, those reps will be forced to give up these long-term relationships with marketers, some of which have been built over years.</p>
<p>There are, of course, many different ways to organize sales &#8212; and each has its fans and detractors. But one thing is clear: Making such a major change has potentially large ramifications on Yahoo&#8217;s financial performance, at least in the short term, since advertising makes up the bulk of its revenue.</p>
<p>The change might also result in some attrition among the sales staff, said sources, although many at Yahoo are expecting that De Castro will bring in his own execs from outside to help with the transition. (One interesting name I heard floated was former Googler Penry Price, who was close to De Castro when they both worked there. He is currently president of Media6Degrees, an ad targeting start-up.)</p>

<p>His departure has left a large gap in sales leadership and in maintaining strong relationships with big advertisers and agencies. De Castro himself is not as well known in the ad marketplace, despite many years at Google in sales (more on that to come). </p>
<p>Currently, the key ad execs at Yahoo under De Castro are Peter Foster, who heads audience advertising, and Mark Ellis, VP of North American sales and global partnerships.</p>
<p>De Castro outlined the new ad org plan to staff immediately after a multi-day offsite with top sales leaders last week, at which Yahoo&#8217;s acquisition options in the ad tech market were also discussed. </p>

<p>ShoeDazzle, the Los Angeles-based personalized style and retail service, is replacing its current CEO Bill Strauss with its founder Brian Lee.</p>
<p>In an interview, Lee said Strauss had &#8220;voluntarily resigned,&#8221; but did not give any further details of the departure. </p>
<p>Strauss joined ShoeDazzle last fall from a longtime stint running Provide Commerce, which has e-commerce sites such as ProFlowers and RedEnvelope. </p>
<p>&#8220;Bill has done some amazing things for the business,&#8221; said Lee, who has been serving as chairman of ShoeDazzle. &#8220;The company has so much potential and over the past year has grown tremendously.&#8221;</p>
<p>The start-up, which got its first burst of attention from its affiliation with famebot Kim Kardashian, recently announced that it would <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120329/shoedazzles-new-ceo-tweaks-business-to-make-subscribing-less-punitive/">tweak its monthly subscription offering</a> and it also added several new retail categories beyond shoes. </p>
<p>It has certainly gotten a lot of money to make it work, raising $60 million from a high-profile group of venture investors since it was founded in 2008, including from Polaris Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners. </p>
<p>The reappointment means Lee will now have <em>two</em> CEO jobs &#8212; he has most recently been running The Honest Company, a monthly subscription service he co-founded with actress Jessica Alba and others that delivers bundles of eco-friendly diapers, wipes, skin care and home cleaning products. </p>
<p>Lee noted that Honest co-founder Sean Kane, who has been COO there, would be stepping up in helping run that start-up.</p>
<p>&#8220;These are two of the most exciting companies in L.A. and there are strong teams at both companies,&#8221; said Lee, who also co-founded LegalZoom. </p>

<p>Just as the annual Consumer Electronics Show kicks off this week, according to a report from the NPD Group: Consumer electronics sales during this past holiday period dropped six percent from last year.</p>
<p>That should be some not-so-welcome news for the vendors at the Las Vegas gadget confab, which is seeking to show off new wares to excite said consumers.</p>
<p>Those offerings had better step it up, from a look at the NPD Weekly Tracking Service, which noted that the decline was coming off another decline from a year ago.</p>
<p>While 2011&#8242;s drop was not as bad as 2010&#8242;s, it&#8217;s not the right direction, although the tally did not include some of the more explosive device categories being prominently featured at CES, such as tablets.</p>
<p>Said NPD: &#8220;Total consumer technology sales (excluding cell phones, tablets, e-readers, and video games) fell 5.9 percent to around $9.5 billion for the 5 weeks ending December 24, a slight improvement over the 6.2 percent decline in 2010.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sales of personal computers and televisions fell 4 percent, with flat unit volumes.</p>
<p>&#8220;2010 was the first year in quite awhile where the real drags on the core CE marketplace were not TVs and PCs,&#8221; said Stephen Baker, VP of industry analysis at NPD, in a press release. &#8220;Revenue for those two segments outperformed while the rest of the market dropped by more than 7 percent. The accelerated rate of decline in older technology categories such as DVD, GPS and MP3 players put a ceiling on how well the industry could perform during the holiday.&#8221;</p>
<p>Consumers did snap up flat-panel TVs, with screen sizes of 50 inches and higher rising by 32 percent in unit sales.</p>
<p>And the rocky 3-D TV business also grew by more than 100 percent, with TVs with &#8220;3D capability accounting for more than one in every five dollars spent on TVs during the holiday.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also up: Home theater systems (10 percent) and stand-alone streaming devices (65 percent).</p>
<p>But those increases did not stem the overall negative tide.</p>
<p>For other sectors, here&#8217;s the damage to holiday revenue in percentage change from 2011 dollars spent:</p>
<p>Blu-ray players: Down 17 percent.</p>
<p>Camcorders: Down 42.5 percent.</p>
<p>Digital picture frames: Down 37.5 percent.</p>
<p>GPS: Down 32.6 percent.</p>
<p>HDD: Down 25.1 percent.</p>
<p>Mice and keyboards: Down 7.1 percent.</p>
<p>MP3 players: Down 20.5 percent.</p>
<p>Multifunction printers: Down 9.9 percent.</p>
<p>Point-and-shoot cameras: Down 20.8 percent.</p>

<p>In a deal that was struck some time ago and is close to fruition, BermanBraun is prepping three major Web properties for AOL that will focus on pets, men and, interestingly, the weather.</p>
<p>After I inquired, AOL confirmed that the Hollywood production company &#8212; headed by former Yahoo and ABC exec Lloyd Braun and former Paramount exec Gail Berman &#8212; will debut the trio of sites around March. The new sites will use rich features and a slick design to attract premium advertisers.</p>
<p>The pair will jointly sell the advertising, but the sites themselves will be operated by BermanBraun in cooperation with AOL&#8217;s media unit, the Huffington Post Media Group. The deal was struck in late 2010, before AOL bought the Huffington Post for $300 million in January of this year.</p>
<p>While AOL has partnered with many outside sites, this will be the most prominent one since that acquisition.</p>
<p>Since then, much of the new content development on AOL has been aimed at drastically increasing the number of sites with that brand. There have been more than two dozen of those since March.</p>
<p>In this case, the Huffington Post Media Group, run by Arianna Huffington, has typically either created new topic sites or relaunched old AOL ones.  </p>
<p>This week, for example, the company rejiggered AOL TV as HuffPost TV, as well as announcing El Huffington Post, an international Spanish-language version of the Huffington Post that will debut in early 2012, in partnership with El País.</p>
<p>The BermanBraun effort, though, is more independent and large-scale. It will feature extensive video and heavy use of imagery. Huffington Post will be involved in editorial selection, and has been working closely with the firm on incorporating social elements.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a very dynamic and collaborative partnership &#8212; we&#8217;ve worked together on everything from design to picking the editors,&#8221; said Roy Sekoff, founding editor of the Huffington Post Media Group, about the arrangement. &#8220;BermanBraun brings a distinctive approach to their sites, and we&#8217;ve helped infuse that with our focus on real-time, social, and building community.&#8221; </p>
<p>Sekoff declined to give more details, such as the names of the sites. (They won&#8217;t be HuffPost Pets, HuffPost Weather and HuffPost Dudes, though!) </p>
<p>Pets could be a strong category if done in a new way, especially if designed with new tablet devices in mind. And weather, to my mind, is a sleeper category if reimagined freshly.</p>
<p>BermanBraun &#8212; which also develops television shows and movies &#8212; has a lot of experience in the online content arena. It has previously created Web sites for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN unit, including the high-profile celebrity site Wonderwall.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see how the collaboration turns out. In the meantime, here&#8217;s my favorite weather song &#8212; Lena Horne rules! &#8212; to enjoy until the three sites launch:</p>

<p>Among the hot and hyped Web 2.0 scene, not many would pick out 13-year-old digital promotions site, Coupons.com.</p>
<p>But, on the heels of a recent $200 million funding &#8212; which valued the quiet Mountain View, Calif., company at $1 billion &#8212; and a surging online discounting market, it has nabbed another $30 million from Greylock Partners.</p>
<p>Greylock has already invested half that amount, via a secondary market transaction, and is Coupons.com&#8217;s first venture investor. Its previous funders have been institutional investors. </p>
<p>&#8220;Coupons.com have been quietly building all the key infrastructure in this area,&#8221; said Greylock&#8217;s Reid Hoffman. &#8220;We think they are poised for the massive shift that is coming.&#8221;</p>
<p>The new funds, said its CEO and co-founder Steven Boal, will be used for a variety of things, including an aggressive mobile and social push for the longtime site.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are now focusing on hypergrowth,&#8221; said Boal, who noted that coupon clipping is perhaps the original social media. &#8220;Saving is kind of hip these days, even if we have been around for a long time with this exact focus.&#8221;</p>
<p>Coupons.com had already moved in the mobile/social direction with the 2009 acquisition of Grocery iQ, a mobile app that lets users manage shopping lists and discounts on phones.</p>
<p>There will be more to come, said Boal, who said the growth of the category is inevitable as consumers use these devices to manage their spending habits.</p>
<p>Coupons.com will also use the funds to expand its staff from 288 employees now to more than 450 by the end of the year, operating in about 13 countries. While Coupons.com has been profitable on a cash-flow basis, all the new initiatives will be costly.</p>
<p>And, while that kind of expansion could remind you of the explosive daily deals sector &#8212; and it is easy to put Coupons.com in the same highly competitive arena as Groupon &#8212; the company operates more as a platform and a white-label provider of discounting services to manufacturers and retailers, especially supermarkets and chain stores.</p>
<p>In fact, Coupons.com provides a lot of such services for them, garnering $100 million in revenue this year, up from $60 million last year and $40 million the year before. Much of that money is made when a customer uses its site or sites it powers and downloads a coupon for redemption. </p>
<p>One area of promising growth, said Boal, is managing discounts on Facebook&#8217;s social networking site, which is increasingly being used by consumer goods companies to test promotions and increase loyalty.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a really interesting area as product companies can be really nimble in managing their promotions,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And the ability to really drill down on the response of a certain sector of consumer is very powerful.&#8221;</p>
<p>It goes without saying that newspapers that previously dominated this industry have been on the wane.</p>
<p>The massive funding also sets up Coupons.com for a possible 2012 IPO, especially given its dominance &#8212; it serves nine out of 10 big grocery chains, four out of four pharmacy giants and such &#8212; in the digital couponing sector.</p>
<p>Presumably, there would be no discounts for that stock.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Zite, the magazine-style reading app for the Apple iPad, has been sold to news giant CNN for $20 million to $25 million.</p>
<p>The arena for news readers on tablets and smartphones is competitive, with high-profile efforts such as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">Flipboard</a>, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a> from Yahoo, AOL&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">Editions</a> and start-ups such as Pulse and Zite.</p>
<p>The reason for CNN&#8217;s acquisition interest &#8212; as well as look-sees from several other publishers &#8212; is not a surprise: As readers turn more toward using these mobile devices to consume content, big media companies are trying to acquire the technology to serve up their fare to them.</p>
<p>It is a dicey arena, though, where content aggregation meets (and crashes into) content lifting. Vancouver-based Zite, for example, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite/">was sent a cease-and-desist letter in March</a>, by a panoply of media companies (not CNN!) alleging various copyright violations.</p>
<p>That happened <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110308/zite-launches-even-more-personalized-ipad-magazine-app/">right after it was launched</a>, with $4 million in funding from angel investors and Canadian grants and an innovative personalized article-picking algorithm. </p>
<p>As Liz Gannes wrote then:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>[Then] Zite CEO Ali Davar describes the iPad as a way to &#8220;emancipate the technology&#8221; his team originated at research at the University of British Columbia.</p>
<p>It had previously been put to work in a browser plug-in called Worio. And, as you might have guessed, browser plug-ins are a tough business.</p>
<p>The free Zite app imports a user&#8217;s Twitter tweets, follows and Google Reader subscriptions, offers lists of pre-made categories, and then solicits feedback and refines over time a list of topics and sources the user is interested in. It features articles based on their popularity, number of shares from a user&#8217;s network and topic relevance. (Davar said he thinks a person&#8217;s Facebook network data is too heterogeneous to reliably recommend articles, so it’s not included as an option.)</p></blockquote>
<p>Last week, a Canadian site called <a href="http://www.techvibes.com/blog/vancouvers-zite-to-be-acquired-by-cnn-for-20-25-million-2011-08-22">Techvibes</a> first wrote about the possibility of the sale of Zite to CNN, which is based in Atlanta and owned by Time Warner.</p>
<p>In a press release, CNN said Zite would remain a standalone unit, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNN, and that CEO Mark Johnson will continue to run Zite&#8217;s operations, but now in San Francisco. CNN also said that Davar will remain an executive director and Mike Klass will continue as CTO.</p>
<p>In a statement, Johnson said: &#8220;Zite is thrilled about combining forces with CNN to create a world-class news discovery platform. In CNN, we have found a partner who shares our vision and passion. Being part of the CNN family gives us the capital to grow Zite&#8217;s business and continue to innovate in the space.&#8221;</p>

<p>But, before you go, I&#8217;d like to call out a few specifics that we&#8217;re particularly excited about. </p>
<p>The core of our expanded social media presence is the 15 new topic and category-based Twitter accounts. These new accounts &#8212; specifically about Apple, venture capital, personnel changes or mobile, to name a few &#8212; allow readers to more closely follow topics and companies they care most about. </p>
<p>We&#8217;ve chosen to keep the main <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/allthingsd"><strong>@AllThingsD</strong></a> account live and real-time, meaning it will still deliver all of our stories within seconds of publishing. </p>
<p>But readers aren&#8217;t always awake when the news they care about breaks, so the new topic- and category-specific accounts are optimized through our partnership with <a href="http://www.socialflow.com/">SocialFlow</a>, a real-time service for social media delivery. </p>
<p>SocialFlow listens for when the followers of a Twitter account are active, and chooses to tweet the posts that are best. Some articles may be held back for a short time, especially those published in off-hours, although we&#8217;ve chosen settings that will keep anything from getting stale and also maximize the relevance of our tweets.  </p>
<p>The system is designed so that readers following our main <strong>@AllThingsD</strong> account can also follow others without being overburdened by additional tweets. </p>

<p><strong>AllThingsD</strong> has undergone a lot of changes in the past year that Walt and I are truly proud of, and today we are posting together about changes to social media on the site.</p>
<p>Social media, especially Twitter, has been a major part of the <strong>AllThingsD</strong> operation since our earliest days. We have always encouraged our writers to be active on the medium &#8212; something we continue to do.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why we are launching 15 new Twitter accounts that break out our coverage into categories, as on our site, and also around specialized topics we know our audience follows closely.</p>
<p>Now, in addition to following the main <a href="http://twitter.com/allthingsd" target="_blank">@AllThingsD</a> Twitter account for up-to-the-second updates, our readers can follow accounts that feature only our stories about Apple, venture capital, personnel changes or mobile, to name a few. We hope readers will customize their experience so that <strong>AllThingsD</strong> can be as useful a resource as possible.</p>
<p>In addition to the Twitter accounts, we also have newly refreshed Facebook pages, and we&#8217;ve enabled LinkedIn sharing of our articles as part of becoming one of its recommended news sources.</p>

<p>We&#8217;re adding all of these features while maintaining respect for the personal privacy and data of our readers. Therefore, all social media implementations on <strong>AllThingsD</strong> require the reader to take an explicit action to share.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, he <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110403/sb-nation-sacks-aol-in-raid-of-former-engadget-team-for-competing-new-tech-site">hired away eight staffers from AOL&#8217;s Engadget</a> in order to create a competing tech news and gadget reviews site.</p>

<p>And now, according to sources close to the situation, the former AOL content head is close to hiring another former top AOL media exec, Marty Moe (pictured here), to manage it and also more niche sites the blog network is contemplating launching.</p>
<p>Sources said the hiring of Moe is not yet complete, but is close to being struck.</p>
<p>Tyler Bleszinski, SB Nation&#8217;s founder and sports editorial director, will continue to manage the start-up&#8217;s sports blog network, while Moe will focus on the company&#8217;s tech vertical and any other future categories.</p>
<p>Moe <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/top-aol-media-exec-marty-moe-to-depart-other-rumors-of-david-eun-ankling-not-so-much">left AOL less than a year ago</a>, after nine years working at the New York-based portal, including with Bankoff.</p>
<p>Both had been involved in the purchase of Weblogs Inc., which included the flagship Engadget site.</p>
<p>Now, it seems they will be trying to remake the concept of a content network, although in a more entrepreneurial and innovative setting.</p>
<p>The new tech site&#8211;which is still unnamed and will be helmed editorially by outgoing Engadget Editor in Chief Josh Topolsky&#8211;will debut some time in the fall. It is the first content expansion at the Washington, D.C., SB Nation, which has heretofore been exclusively focused on sports.</p>
<p>Topolsky will be joined by former Engadget managing editor Nilay Patel and also former staffers Paul Miller, Joanna Stern, Ross Miller, Chris Ziegler, Justin Glow and Dan Chilton.</p>
<p>All of the above had left Engadget in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110312/engadgets-top-editors-topolsky-and-patel-exit-from-aols-giant-tech-site">series of departures of late</a>, all due to increasing unhappiness with AOL&#8217;s management and content strategy.</p>
<p>Paul Miller and Ross Miller, who are not related, both stated publicly that they did not like the editorial direction AOL was going in, especially a controversial content strategy document titled &#8220;The AOL Way.&#8221;</p>
<p>New AOL content head Arianna Huffington has shifted toward a more journalistic path, but the talent bleed began before AOL&#8217;s $315 million purchase of the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>Many new upstart content sites such as SB Nation have begun to try to eat away at the big portal&#8217;s content strategy&#8211;pushed by its CEO Tim Armstrong&#8211;with perhaps more nimble efforts of their own.</p>
<p>And those smaller companies are also well funded.</p>
<p>SB Nation completed a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101108/sb-nation-raises-10-5-million-in-khosla-ventures-led-series-c-round">$10.5 million Series C venture round</a>, led by Khosla Ventures, in the fall.</p>
<p>It had already raised about $13 million in total funding from Accel Partners, Allen &#038; Company and Comcast Interactive Capital, as well as from angel investors such as Ted Leonsis and others in Silicon Valley.</p>

<p>Today, BoomTown braved the floods and skippered <strong>All Things Digital</strong>&#8216;s S.S. Minnow through a Noah-like rainstorm in Silicon Valley to visit the HQ of Pulse.</p>
<p>Last summer, you might recall, co-founders Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta of the nifty visual news-reading app got <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/popular-pulse-news-reader-ipad-app-gets-steve-jobs-praise-in-morning-then-booted-from-app-store-hours-later-after-new-york-times-complaint">publicly picked out by Apple&#8217;s Steve Jobs</a> in a speech about third-party innovations on the iPad.</p>
<p>It was a high point for the pair of Stanford University students and newbie entrepreneurs&#8211;except that the very same day, the New York Times slapped them with a cease and desist for misusing its RSS feed.</p>
<p>Dramatic, for sure, but they have made nice with the Times since then and have also raised more than $1 million in funding from a range of notable venture players.</p>
<p>Compared to a similar start-up&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation/">the social news-reading app Flipboard</a>&#8211;that&#8217;s a very small budget for Pulse, which was making a profit on a paid app but, since it went free in November, it&#8217;s not making a profit now.</p>
<p>The move&#8211;while it will require a new business plan at some point&#8211;allowed Pulse usage to explode, hitting three million users today from 250,000 paid users only four months ago.</p>
<p>A lot of that growth has been on Apple&#8217;s iPhone and Google&#8217;s Android smartphones, rather than on the iPad tablet, where Pulse began.</p>
<p>And, although the Android mobile operating system was the last platform to be introduced, it is the fastest growing one, with over one million users on it, Pulse said.</p>
<p>Pulse launched a 2.0 update for the iPhone and Android today, with &#8220;enhanced performance, new content sources and improved sharing with social feeds and news discovery features.&#8221;</p>
<p>That means the app is speedier, has more news offerings in more categories and a bigger dollop of social content and sharing tools with Facebook, Twitter and other social networking companies.</p>
<p>Pulse now has eight employees squeezed into its small offices in downtown Palo Alto, CA&#8211;complete with the required start-up garage door.</p>

<p>At least once a day, BoomTown gets a call from investors, analysts or other troublemaking types&#8211;you <em>know</em> who you are!&#8211;wondering why Yahoo is still plugging away in search.</p>
<p>With a declining market share in the arena and a search technology outsourcing deal with Microsoft, it&#8217;s not a bad question to ask.</p>
<p>But Yahoo begs to differ, introducing a new feature called Yahoo Search Direct at a press event in San Francisco today.</p>
<p>I liveblogged it, natch.</p>
<p><strong>10:14 am:</strong> I was late, as per usual, but walked in just as the session was getting started.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving&#8211;looking fetching in a purple cashmere sweater&#8211;was talking about search.</p>
<p>He immediately turned it over to Shashi Seth, Yahoo&#8217;s head search dude, who immediately said: &#8220;Answers not links.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Huh?</em></p>
<p>Actually, the product is pretty nifty, showing a lightning-speed box that shows more robust search results, although not unlike offerings from both Microsoft&#8217;s Bing and, of course, Google Instant.</p>
<p>While both have different takes, it is essentially a direction in which search brings in maps, photos, and&#8211;of course&#8211;advertising.</p>

<p><strong>10:23 am: </strong> Wait, it was <em>over</em> before it started! Whoa. No more bells and whistles?</p>
<p>And I still was enjoying Irving&#8217;s sweater and I wanted to touch it, but that would have been wrong.*</p>
<p>Seth then took questions from the reporters.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe the next generation of search&#8230;people are looking for answers,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Very true, but perhaps not so much from Yahoo anymore.</p>
<p>Still, Yahoo Search Direct is a laudable try and it&#8217;s also nice to see some innovation from the long-troubled company.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are the premier digital media company,&#8221; said Seth, parroting a new description of Yahoo that the Silicon Valley company is now using since its recent sales meeting in San Antonio.</p>
<p>I asked a question about whether there is a dedicated app for the tablet of Yahoo Direct Search, which sources had also told me was shown to the troops in Texas.</p>
<p>Yep! It will be ready later this year.</p>
<p>I also asked about how much all this search innovation was costing compared to return on the investment.</p>
<p>No answers from either Irving or Seth.</p>
<p>Someone then asked if there would be a lift in market share from the feature.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the plan, Stan!</p>
<p><strong>10:41 am:</strong> More questions about the comparisons to Google Instant. Of course, it&#8217;s the same type of thing, in the contest to win the King of Relevancy crown among consumers.</p>
<p>Google Instant. Yahoo Search Direct. Quora. My dentist, who seems to know <em>everything</em>. In case you didn&#8217;t know, dentists are very erudite.</p>
<p>Seth noted that even though Yahoo has only 15 categories covered in Yahoo Search Direct, there will be hundreds to come, as well as more features on top of this feature.</p>

<p>Speaking of purple, the demo dude kept putting Elizabeth Taylor into the query box, which depressed me. Violet eyes now closed forever.</p>
<p>That was the real story today.</p>
<p>As if to round out the event, someone asked whether critics are right about whether Yahoo should still be in search.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re in this for good,&#8221; said Irving firmly.</p>
<p>&#8220;Look, we are not focused on the past,&#8221; added Seth, who was not here in this very room at a similar Yahoo search event years ago, when similar promises were made about search going away from a page of blue links. &#8220;I don&#8217;t even know if you&#8217;d call it search in three years.&#8221;</p>
<p>What would you call it then?</p>
<p>&#8220;Find,&#8221; joked Irving. And later, &#8220;It&#8217;s actually &#8216;found.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Apparently, Yahoo was lost and now is found via Yahoo Search Direct.</p>
<p>*By the way, I touched the sweater, which was&#8211;<em>in fact, Blake</em>&#8211;periwinkle, which is a twee version of purple.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Social games developer Kabam has raised a hefty round of funding to bring games to Facebook that appeal to a more traditional demographic&#8211;and probably not your mother. The capital will be used to expand its studios, release new titles and make acquisitions.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1787" title="kabam" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/kabam-275x253.png" alt="" width="275" height="253" />In a third round of capital, <a href="http://www.kabam.com">Kabam</a> raised $30 million, led by Redpoint Ventures, with Intel Capital and Canaan Partners participating.</p>
<p>The Redwood City, Calif.-based company, which has such titles on Facebook as Kingdoms of Camelot, Dragons of Atlantis and Glory of Rome, is focused on developing massively multiplayer games like Activision&#8217;s super successful Call of Duty: Black Ops on Xbox.</p>
<p>As social gaming has ramped up, titles so far have been more mellow, focusing on attracting the largest audience possible. Therefore, many titles by category leaders like Zynga have had a wholesome flavor, focusing on activities in daily life, like farming and cooking. Typically, the games take only a few minutes per session, and users interact with friends when asking for goods or helping each other out on tasks.</p>
<p>However, Kabam has integrated more traditional features into its games, such as battles and fights, that require more strategy. It also allows players to interact with one another via real-time chat.</p>
<p>Kabam, which has been flying fairly under the radar, has 200 employees, up from 20 in the beginning of the year, and has additional studios in San Francisco, China and Germany. In October, it acquired Wonderhill, and this year it plans to launch more games, continue hiring and make additional acquisitions.</p>
<p>A $30 million round by investors signals that the social gaming market is still far from mature, with growth opportunities and niches still remaining&#8211;despite Zynga&#8217;s dominance and major acquisitions by some of the top game producers, like Electronic Arts and Disney, already having taken place.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It has long been possible to control one PC or Mac from another, legally and with permission. Though the process can be tricky to set up, companies often use it as a maintenance and training tool, and some consumers use it to help others solve computer problems, or to reach back to their home or office machines while on the road to access information.</p>
<p>But what about remotely controlling a PC or Mac from the newest category of digital device, a multitouch tablet? Well, it turns out there are apps for that.</p>

<p>Such apps have been around on super-smart phones like the iPhone for years, but phone screens are so small that using them to open and operate programs and folders on a Mac or PC is very frustrating, at least to me. The iPad, with its roomy 10-inch screen, is a different story. It actually has the real estate to make the process much more practical.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing a couple of these apps on my iPad, using them to remotely control Windows PCs and Macs at my home and office. In fact, I&#8217;m typing this paragraph in Microsoft Word on a Mac remotely from the iPad.</p>
<p>My conclusion is that these apps do work, but even on the large iPad screen, they&#8217;re too clumsy and confusing to use on a regular basis, mostly because touch-screen tablets aren&#8217;t a great match for the way traditional computers—designed for a mouse and a physical keyboard—work. Also, the apps have some functional limitations, and they are heavily dependent on the speed of the network or Internet connection, which can make them slow at demanding things like video.</p>

<p>For my tests, I selected two apps squarely aimed at average consumers. One is called LogMeIn Ignition, and is the iPad and iPhone incarnation of a longstanding computer-to-computer remote-control product called LogMeIn. The other is called iTeleport. It has been around, under various names, since the early days of the iPhone, and now comes in an iPad edition as well.</p>
<p>Both apps get around the complexity of setup by installing a special free program on the computer you wish to control that talks to the iPad app. The apps can see and control all the computers on which you have installed companion programs. I found setup easy and the connections generally reliable and fast enough, except for video.</p>
<p>But the big drawback to these products is that they are clumsy in controlling the target computer. Each allows two basic methods for this. In one, your finger moves the computer&#8217;s mouse cursor and you click the virtual mouse by tapping. In the other, you can directly tap on things on the remote screen. In my view, LogMeIn was better at the first method and iTeleport was better at the second. But I found both clumsy and tedious in both programs, especially when I tried to combine controlling the remote computer with the frequent need to use touch to move the image of the screen around the iPad&#8217;s display.</p>
<p>LogMeIn Ignition costs a one-time fee of $29.99. The iTeleport app can be used free for 30 days, after which it costs either $2.99 a month or a $24.99 one-time fee. For the next seven days, iTeleport is running a sale that cuts the price to $1 a month, or $10 for the one-time fee.</p>
<p>Both apps can control multiple Windows or Mac computers, at no extra cost. For my tests, I used each to remotely access the same two Windows PCs and two Macs, both desktops and laptops. One limitation: neither app allows you to transfer a file from a computer to the iPad.</p>
<p>While there are some differences between the products, they are fundamentally similar. Once you log in, you see the remote computer&#8217;s screen on your iPad screen. In my tests, with both products, I was able to open Web pages, check email, view photos and use productivity apps. I also was able to print documents from the computers on my home printer, even while I was miles away.</p>
<p>In both apps, you pinch and zoom to enlarge or reduce the view of the target computer screen, and can rotate the image of the screen. </p>
<p>The iPad can&#8217;t play Flash videos, but these apps allow you to view such videos from your PC or Mac on the iPad. But there are catches. For one thing, neither program lets you hear audio from the computer through the iPad, so the videos (and music you play remotely) are mute. Also, in my tests, even over a fast connection, I could never get a video from the remote computer to play smoothly over either app.</p>
<p>LogMeIn also offers a version for Android, unlike iTeleport, and that allows audio to be transmitted. I tested this on a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and it worked.</p>
<p>One big difference is in the level of security or privacy the two apps offer. Both encrypt the remote connection, but LogMeIn requires you to sign in twice: once to its own service and once to the computer itself. iTeleport skips the computer login, so it feels less secure. In addition, iTeleport outsources its authentication to Google. You sign into the product using your Google credentials. This is simpler, but requires you to trust Google with the privacy of the contents of your computer.</p>
<p>Each program has special keyboards and shortcuts to add things to the iPad that computers use but the tablet lacks, such as function keys. Each also has various gestures you can use as shortcuts. But the overall effect is confusing.</p>
<p>Bottom line: You can control a PC or a Mac from an iPad, without any complex setup, using these two apps. But, unless you spend a lot of time learning to get good at it, the process is clunky and best used only when you absolutely must.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Social apps are few and far between for the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110106/apples-mac-app-store-debuts-with-1000-apps/">grand opening today of Apple&#8217;s Mac App Store</a>, meant to be a desktop app marketplace equivalent to the highly successful app stores for Apple devices.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-2022" href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110106/mac-app-store-lacks-social-apps-save-for-twitter/macappsocialnew/"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2022" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/macappsocialNEW-204x300.jpg" alt="" width="204" height="300" /></a>The only big-name social app joining the &#8220;social networking&#8221; category at launch is Twitter, which contributed an app that it <a href="http://blog.twitter.com/2011/01/twitter-for-mac.html">says</a> is designed for the &#8220;mainstream&#8221; user and is three times faster than the previous version of Tweetie for Mac, the independent app that Twitter <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100409/twitter-goes-shopping-comes-home-with-tweetie-next/">acquired</a>. The new Twitter app is quite elegant, with the rounded corners and UI accents of an iOS app rather than something from the desktop world. Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski says that based on his positive experience with it this morning he&#8217;s already deleted the two other Twitter clients on his desktop.</p>
<p>Other than that, the category contains an app for Mashable, the blog about social networking. There are some independent Twitter apps such as Tweetings for Twitter and Itsy. There&#8217;s an app for MarsEdit, the desktop blogging software.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s slim pickings compared to the social networking category for iPhone apps, where the top free apps are Skype, Facebook and Textfree. Meanwhile, the free iPad social networking app category is led by a couple of off-brand Facebook apps and the official Twitter app.</p>
<p>Facebook has neglected development of its own apps on the iPad and other platforms, so it&#8217;s not a surprise that the company hasn&#8217;t built something for the Mac app launch. And Skype, as you can understand, already has its own desktop app. Various texting and voice services perhaps make more sense in a phone situation. But you&#8217;d think there would at least be a LinkedIn, Tumblr or Myspace Mac app.</p>
<p>Maybe they&#8217;ll come later&#8211;today&#8217;s launch included just 1,000 apps. Or maybe the desktop just isn&#8217;t a very social place.</p>
<p>(Unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t look like I can link to the Mac apps themselves, as accessing the store requires a software update available only to users of the latest Mac operating system.)</p>

<p>Wouldn&#8217;t it be cool if Mark Zuckerberg donned a hoodie-tuxedo and ran up and grabbed any statuette actor Jesse Eisenberg won over the next few months, as the Hollywood awards season gears up?</p>
<p>Eisenberg, of course, played the Facebook co-founder and CEO in the movie &#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; which just grabbed a clutch of Golden Globe Awards nominations today.</p>
<p>Next stop, the Oscars, where the controversial retelling of the founding of Facebook will likely also garner a spate of nominations when they are announced in early February.</p>
<p>And many in Hollywood think the &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; will win big at the Academy Awards, even though it was not a blockbuster, due to the rave reviews and its fancy pedigree.</p>
<p>Along with Eisenberg&#8217;s Best Actor nod for the Golden Globe Awards&#8211;which take place in mid-January and is often a harbinger for the Oscars&#8211;writer Aaron Sorkin got a nomination for Best Screenplay, David Fincher nabbed one for Best Director, and Andrew Garfield and Armie Hammer each scored for Best Supporting Actor.</p>
<p>The film itself, in a key category, got a nomination for Best Motion Picture in the drama category.</p>
<p>Maybe a sequel is in order?</p>

But the carrier finds itself in its crosshairs once again.<br />

<p>The January 2011 issue ranking cellphones and services carries this headline on the cover: &#8220;Best and worst providers (Sorry AT&#038;T).&#8221;</p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to try to pick up a copy this morning and will then update, but here are the highlights, according to the Houston Chronicle. <a href="http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2010/12/consumer_reports_att_is_the_worst_carrier.html">AT&#038;T got the magazine&#8217;s full black dot rating (that&#8217;s as low as it gets) in almost every nationwide category,</a> while Verizon topped the rankings. </p>
<p>AT&#038;T sent out the following statement in response to the rankings: &#8220;We take this seriously and we continually look for new ways to improve the customer experience. The fact is wireless customers have choices and a record number of them chose AT&#038;T in the third quarter, significantly more than our competitors. Hard data from independent drive tests confirms AT&#038;T has the nation&#8217;s fastest mobile broadband network with our nearest competitor 20 percent slower on average nationwide and our largest competitor 60 percent slower on average nationwide. And, our dropped call rate is within 1/10 of a percent&#8211;the equivalent of just one call in a thousand&#8211;of the industry leader.&#8221;</p>
<p>On the device side, the iPhone (the same one that the magazine once <a href="http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/07/apple-iphone-4-antenna-issue-iphone4-problems-dropped-calls-lab-test-confirmed-problem-issues-signal-strength-att-network-gsm.html">recommended against buying</a>) tops the list of phones available at AT&#038;T, the Droid X and Samsung Fascinate tied for best Verizon option and  Samsung&#8217;s Epic and Vibrant top the options at Sprint and T-Mobile, respectively.</p>

<p>Amazon will invest $175 million in LivingSocial, the No. 2 player in the fast-growing social buying space.</p>

<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101201/amazon-poised-to-make-a-major-strategic-investment-in-livingsocial-to-counter-groupoogle-threat">reported yesterday that the massive investment was in the works</a>.</p>
<p>The online retail giant&#8217;s big bet on the Washington, D.C.-based start-up comes in the wake of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101129/googles-groupon-offer-5-3-billion-with-700-million-earnout">ongoing acquisition talks between Google and Groupon</a>, the category leader in the local deals business.</p>
<p>While it appears to be a reaction to those discussions, sources said Amazon and LivingSocial have been talking for some time about a variety of deals between them.</p>
<p>Sources said the Amazon investment put a very hefty valuation of over one billion dollars on LivingSocial.</p>
<p>Interest in LivingSocial has heightened of late, given the $6 billion in cash, stock and earnouts that BoomTown has reported Google is considering ponying up to purchase Chicago-based Groupon, and grab ahold of its 12 million users across the globe and $500 million in annual revenue.</p>
<p>But LivingSocial&#8211;which has been thriving even in Groupon&#8217;s flashier shadow&#8211;has 10 million subscribers worldwide in more than 120 markets and five countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland and Australia.</p>
<p>And, as LivingSocial noted when it announced its acquisition of Australia&#8217;s Jump On It recently, it is currently booking an average of more than $1 million a day and is projected to book well more than $500 million in revenue in 2011.</p>
<p>And that is what has attracted Amazon, which has almost no profile in this lucrative local space, despite some attempts at its own solution. It <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100630/amazon-goes-shopping-comes-home-with-woot">bought a small and quirky daily deals site, Woot</a>, for $110 million in June.</p>
<p>But sources said that, rather than sell, LivingSocial management wanted to keep the company independent, and thinks a sale of Groupon will give it a huge opportunity for growth.</p>
<p>Why? Well, even though Groupoogle or Goopon are fun to say, the inevitable regulatory review could drag on, resulting in a slowing down of innovation in the bigger Google culture and the distinct possibility of newly rich Groupon execs flying the coop (in private planes).</p>
<p>More investment money should help LivingSocial move ahead faster. Sources also said there is likely to be deep integration between its and Amazon&#8217;s services.</p>
<p>LivingSocial <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100429/social-e-commerce-goes-into-overdrive-livingsocial-raises-another-14-million/">announced in April</a> that it had raised $14 million in a Series C round, after grabbing $25 million in a Series B venture funding only a month before. And it has raised $10 million on top of that since 2008.</p>
<p>Sources estimated at the time that the valuation for LivingSocial was several hundred million dollars.</p>
<p>The newest round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners; earlier investors include U.S. Venture Partners, Grotech Ventures and former AOL head Steve Case.</p>
<p>Lightspeed also invested $8 million more on top of Amazon&#8217;s funding.</p>

<p>With the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101129/googles-groupon-offer-5-3-billion-with-700-million-earnout">red-hot acquisition dance between Google and Groupon</a> sucking up all the attention, it&#8217;s easy once again to ignore the No. 2 player in the fast-growing social buying space&#8211;LivingSocial.</p>
<p>But not everyone is&#8211;according to sources close to the situation, the Washington, D.C.-based company that also focuses on local deals is in advanced talks for a major strategic investment&#8211;as high as $150 million&#8211;by online retail giant Amazon, at a very hefty valuation of over one billion dollars.</p>
<p>Sources said there will also be a deep operating partnership between the pair, as part of the deal.</p>
<p>Sources said the investment negotiations with Amazon is not complete yet, of course, and could fall apart.</p>
<p>But interest in LivingSocial has heightened of late, given the $6 billion in cash, stock and earnouts that BoomTown has reported that Google is considering ponying up to purchase the category leader, Chicago-based Groupon, and grab ahold of its 12 million users across the globe and $500 million in annual revenue.</p>
<p>But LivingSocial&#8211;which has been thriving even in Groupon&#8217;s flashier shadow&#8211;has 10 million subscribers worldwide in more than 120 markets and five countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland and Australia.</p>
<p>And, as the start-up noted when LivingSocial announced its acquisition of Jump On It recently, it is currently booking an average of more than $1 million a day and is projected to book well more than $500 million in revenue in 2011.</p>
<p>That is what is apparently attracting Amazon, which has almost no profile in this lucrative local space, despite some attempts at its own solution. It <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100630/amazon-goes-shopping-comes-home-with-woot">bought a small and quirky daily deals site Woot</a>, for $110 million in June.</p>
<p>But, rather than sell, sources said LivingSocial management wants to keep the company independent, and thinks a sale of Groupon will give it a huge opportunity for growth.</p>
<p>Why? Well, even though Groupoogle or Goopon are fun to say, the inevitable regulatory review could drag on, resulting in a slowing down of innovation in the bigger Google culture and the distinct possibility of newly rich Groupon execs flying the coop (in private planes).</p>
<p>More investment money should help.</p>
<p>LivingSocial <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100429/social-e-commerce-goes-into-overdrive-livingsocial-raises-another-14-million/">announced in April</a> that it had raised $14 million in a Series C round, after grabbing $25 million in a Series B venture financing only a month before. And it raised $10 million on top of that since 2008.</p>
<p>Sources estimated at the time that the valuation for LivingSocial was several hundred million dollars.</p>
<p>The newest round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners; Earlier investors U.S. Venture Partners, Grotech Ventures and former AOL head Steve Case.</p>
<p>A report of the Amazon interest in LivingSocial was first posted several weeks ago in a <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2010/11/18/livingsocial-amazon-com-rumor/">in VentureBeat</a>, a day before BoomTown first broke the news of the Groupon and Google discussions.</p>
<p>Both Amazon and LivingSocial declined to comment.</p>
<p>But here is an October <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101019/livingsocials-tim-oshaughnessy-about-local-deals-and-not-being-groupon">video interview I did with LivingSocial CEO Tim O&#8217;Shaughnessy</a> on a recent visit to Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>The entrepreneur has worked at AOL, as well as at Case&#8217;s Revolution Health in Washington, before moving on to the local deals start-up.</p>
