First-time smartphone buyers and those on a budget will soon have another choice in Android phones when the T-Mobile Prism goes on sale Sunday. Priced at $20 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate (or $149.99 off contract), the entry-level Prism features a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera and 3G connectivity, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Prism will be available from Best Buy starting May 6, at Walmart on May 9 and at T-Mobile stores on May 23.

The Verge is reporting that next week Microsoft is planning to sell subscriptions for the Xbox, similarly to how wireless carriers sell phones. Under the plan, the Xbox plus Kinect will cost $99 plus $15 a month for two years, including access to the Xbox Live Gold service and its streaming TV and music. Right now, the package appears to be cheaper than paying upfront for the console, though that doesn’t factor in any future price discounts for the aging hardware.

Mobeam has raised another $1.5 million in capital to work on a solution for point-of-sale systems at retail not being able to read bar codes from coupons on cellphone screens. In October,
the company raised $5 million; in December, it
inked a high-profile partnership with Procter & Gamble, and now adds new investor DFJ Athena, a Korea-focused venture fund affiliated with Draper Fisher Jurvetson, to the list. Previous investors include Yet2Ventures, Samsung Ventures and Mitsui.
