The chip maker re-creates a classic robot toy using augmented reality. Mobilized captures the fun on video and muses about the future.

A little bit ago, I had the chance to check out a very cool augmented-reality concept application that Qualcomm has put together.

The demo is designed to show the power of its chips, but it also shows just how much fun the future is going to be. The demo uses two Android phones to re-create the classic Rock ’em Sock ’em boxer game. In the real world, there are only the phones and a mat set up to form the ring for the robots.

On each screen, however, appear the two robots, using the real camera as the viewer.

Like Word Lens (though with more punching action), this app shows just the beginning of what is going to happen as virtual and real worlds collide, often via the smartphone.

I could explain a bunch more, but just watch the video….

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=52AFE333-49E8-44B6-8E5B-809F783F0A4E&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

A city renowned for its excesses, Las Vegas provided the perfect backdrop for the chip bacchanalia held by Intel Thursday. At an event at the Consumer Electronics Show under way here, the chip maker unloaded a slew of new processors, chipsets and wireless adapters–many built with its latest 32-nanometer manufacturing process, which produces faster and more energy-efficient products.

The 25 newcomers shown off include Intel’s (INTC) Core i3 and i5 processors, the former rated at 2.93 and 3.06 gigahertz, the latter at 3.2GHz. Also, talked up at the event: Intel’s new Turbo Boost technology, which allows processors to substantially increase clock speed as high-bandwidth applications come online.

“Turbo is something we’re very proud of,” Sean Maloney, executive VP of the Intel Architecture Group said during the event. “It’s the first time in the mainstream computer industry that we’re dynamically changing the frequency based on the workload.”

An impressive showing for Intel, which is scheduled to report fourth-quarter results next week. And a nasty blow to rival AMD (AMD), whose 32-nanometer chips won’t arrive at market until 2011.

It’s going to be a long, cold winter for Intel legal.

The Federal Trade Commission filed suit against Intel (INTC) this morning, accusing the company of waging “a systematic campaign to shut out rivals’ competing microchips by cutting off their access to the marketplace.”

In its complaint (full text below), the FTC claims Intel used threats and bundled prices or other offers to encourage exclusive deals, hamper competition or unfairly manipulate the chip market.

The agency also alleges that Intel secretly redesigned certain compiler software in a way that deliberately stunted the performance of competitors’ chips. Intel then claimed the software performed better on its chips than on those of competitors, neglecting to disclose that performance differences were due largely to its compiler design.

“Intel has engaged in a deliberate campaign to hamstring competitive threats to its monopoly,” said Richard A. Feinstein, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Competition. “It’s been running roughshod over the principles of fair play and the laws protecting competition on the merits. The Commission’s action today seeks to remedy the damage that Intel has done to competition, innovation, and, ultimately, the American consumer.”

Significantly, the FTC complaint also takes issue with Intel’s behavior in graphics, accusing the chip maker of attempting to extend its monopoly to graphics processing units, which have become an increasingly important part of the PC industry.

“Having succeeded in slowing adoption of competing CPU chips over the past decade until it could catch up to competitors like Advanced Micro Devices, Intel allegedly once again finds itself falling behind the competition–this time in the critical market for graphics processing units, commonly known as GPUs, as well as some other related markets,” the FTC claims. “These products have lessened the need for CPUs, and therefore pose a threat to Intel’s monopoly power.”

The FTC charges that Intel has responded to this competitive challenge by embarking on a similar anticompetitive strategy, which aims to preserve its CPU monopoly by smothering potential competition from GPU chips such as those made by Nvidia. As part of this latest campaign, Intel misled and deceived potential competitors in order to protect its monopoly, the complaint alleges, adding that there is a dangerous probability that Intel’s unfair methods of competition could allow it to extend its monopoly into the GPU chip markets.

The FTC is seeking an order that would prevent Intel from using threats, bundled prices and similar tactics to encourage exclusive deals and hamper competition. The Commission’s action against Intel comes about a month after the chip maker settled its long-running antitrust dispute with rival AMD (AMD) for $1.25 billion.

Reached for comment, Intel called the suit “misguided” and “based largely on claims that the FTC added at the last minute and has not investigated.”

“This case could have, and should have, been settled,” said Intel general counsel Doug Melamed. “Settlement talks had progressed very far but stalled when the FTC insisted on unprecedented remedies–including the restrictions on lawful price competition and enforcement of intellectual property rights set forth in the complaint–that would make it impossible for Intel to conduct business.”

Melamed further asserts that “The FTC’s rush to file this case will cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars to litigate issues that the FTC has not fully investigated. It is the normal practice of antitrust enforcement agencies to investigate the facts before filing suit. The Commission did not do that in this case.”

The company’s statement in full, below:

Intel Comments on FTC Suit

SANTA CLARA, Calif., December 16, 2009 – Intel Corporation issued the following statement regarding the suit filed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC): “Intel has competed fairly and lawfully. Its actions have benefitted consumers. The highly competitive microprocessor industry, of which Intel is a key part, has kept innovation robust and prices declining at a faster rate than any other industry. The FTC’s case is misguided. It is based largely on claims that the FTC added at the last minute and has not investigated. In addition, it is explicitly not based on existing law but is instead intended to make new rules for regulating business conduct. These new rules would harm consumers by reducing innovation and raising prices.”

Intel senior vice president and general counsel Doug Melamed added, “This case could have, and should have, been settled. Settlement talks had progressed very far but stalled when the FTC insisted on unprecedented remedies–including the restrictions on lawful price competition and innovation set forth in the complaint–that would make it impossible for Intel to conduct business.”

“The FTC’s rush to file this case will cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars to litigate issues that the FTC has not fully investigated. It is the normal practice of antitrust enforcement agencies to investigate the facts before filing suit. The Commission did not do that in this case,” said Melamed.

And the FTC’s complaint:

President Barack Obama has been spending considerable time on East-West trade agreements while in Asia, but for one chip maker, the negotiations between China and Taiwan are even more important.

The two countries are slowly moving toward a formalized trade agreement, called the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, or ECFA, that will address how their economies relate to each another. Its first iteration isn’t expected until early 2010, but Taiwan-based tech companies are already hoping to gain entry to China’s massive consumer market.

That’s especially true for Via Technologies, a chip maker running a distant third behind industry heavyweights Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The company, founded in 1987, made a name for itself working on an underdeveloped part of the market: small, low-power chips.

Looks like AMD has benefited from the same favorable PC updraft that’s lifting Intel. On Thursday, the chip maker reported a narrower third-quarter loss than expected, thanks to "strong demand" for its microprocessors and graphics chips.

Looks like AMD has benefited from the same favorable PC updraft that’s lifting Intel. On Thursday, the chip maker reported a narrower third-quarter loss than projected, thanks to “strong demand” for its microprocessors and graphics chips.

Analysts had expected AMD to lose 42 cents a share on revenue of $1.26 billion, according to a consensus survey by Thomson Reuters. Instead, the company lost 18 cents a share on revenue of $1.4 billion, which was down from $1.8 billion for the same quarter last year.

Not the sort of blow-out quarter we saw from Intel (INTC) earlier this week, but encouraging news nonetheless. Certainly, AMD’s leadership believes the company is poised for a turnaround. During a conference call to discuss AMD’s (AMD) third-quarter results, CEO Dirk Meyer offered an upbeat outlook for the remainder of 2009 despite the current loss.

“Third quarter consumer PC demand continued to improve from prior periods, with particular strength in notebooks and in China and continued recovery in Europe and in North America,” Meyer said. “And it appears the commercial IT markets are positioned to improve next year….Going forward, we believe we are well positioned to succeed.”

The chip maker filed an appeal today challenging the European Commission’s $1.45 billion antitrust fine against it–the agency’s largest ever in a monopoly-abuse case.

On what grounds? Intel (INTC) spokesperson Robert Manetta said simply that the EC’s “decision is wrong.” Said Manetta: “We believe the European Commission misinterpreted some evidence and ignored other pieces of evidence.”

Just how Intel intends to prove that isn’t yet clear. But we may find out in September when the court is likely to issue a summary of the company’s complaints.

Looks like Yahoo has found its new CFO. This afternoon, the company said that Tim Morse will take charge of its finances. Morse, who has served as chief financial officer for chip maker Altera (ALTR) since 2007 and spent 15 years at GE (GE) before that, will start work on June 17 and assume CFO responsibilities on July 1.

Welcome news, since Yahoo has been looking to fill the position since Blake Jorgensen said he would step down from the Silicon Valley-based company last February.

What did it take to bring Morse to Yahoo? According to an SEC filing, a $500,000 signing bonus, a base salary of $500,000, an option to purchase 400,000 shares of Yahoo stock, and 150,000 shares of restricted stock.

The appointment of Morse is yet another for Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who has tended to pick her top execs from a more business-focused sector than one focused on the consumer Internet, which is Yahoo’s arena.

Here is the official press release:

Morse Appointed Chief Financial Officer of Yahoo!

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(Business Wire) Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO) announced today that the Board of Directors has appointed Tim Morse as chief financial officer. Reporting directly to Carol Bartz, the chief executive officer of Yahoo!, Morse will be responsible for the company’s finance, investor relations, and mergers and acquisitions groups. He will commence employment on June 17, 2009 and will assume the responsibilities of CFO on July 1, 2009.

“Tim has a proven ability to translate strategy into structure, process, and execution, and I am delighted that he will be joining my leadership team to help drive Yahoo!’s growth,” said Bartz. “With his passion for operational finance, global experience, and expertise simplifying complex organizations and managing growth, Tim is a natural fit for Yahoo!.”

Morse has financial experience in both large and small organizations, managing in complex, fast-paced environments and establishing scalable, cost-effective processes and controls. Prior to joining Yahoo!, he was the CFO of Altera Corporation, a semiconductor company specializing in programmable logic devices for communications, industrial, and consumer applications. Morse previously served as the CFO and general manager of business development for General Electric Plastics. A 15 year veteran of GE, he also held a variety of positions at GE Plastics, GE Appliances and GE Capital in North America, Europe and Asia.

“Yahoo! is an amazing brand with a unique combination of assets, and I am extremely excited to be joining a finance team with a deep commitment to financial excellence and fiscal discipline,” said Morse. “I look forward to working with the entire leadership team to continue to focus on driving results and creating value for our shareholders.”

Morse holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and operations and strategic management from the Boston College Carroll School of Management.

“Sponsors of Tomorrow” is the new “Intel Inside.” The chipmaker is gearing up to launch a massive new advertising campaign, and that slogan is to be its anchor. Its purpose: to make us all more familiar with the Intel brand–as if it wasn’t ubiquitous enough already. And so, beginning this week we’ll see Intel ads in a variety of media–including a giant digital billboard in New York’s Times Square–touting Intel (INTC) as a driving force in innovation.

Gone are the days of the silly clock-speed race, the megahertz myth, “performance per watt” war and the great AMD (AMD)-Intel dual-core PR shootout. Now Intel wants us all to know that while it’s still “inside” our PCs, it’s outside them in a variety of other ways as well. “Many people take for granted what we as a company helped drive,” Intel spokesman David Dickstein told MarketWatch. “We’re hoping that we’re not just known as a microprocessor company, but as a move-society-by-quantum-leaps company.”

Intel’s (INTC) antitrust troubles haven’t gotten as much attention as Microsoft’s (MSFT), in large part because most evidence concerning the chip maker’s tactics remains locked up in confidential documents. But some new, unflattering details about one investigation are coming to light.

In January, the Korean Federal Trade Commission produced a 133-page public version of its findings against Intel, which it announced last June without providing many specifics. A Korean-speaking research fellow working with a non-profit advocacy group, the American Antitrust Institute, subsequently produced a 15-page translation of sections of the bigger document (which was noted this week by the Inquirer).

The excerpts lay out a series of carrots and sticks that Intel allegedly offered Samsung Electronics Co. and Sambo Computer–-two big PC makers in Korea–-to reduce chip purchases from rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and keep Intel as their main supplier. For example, the document suggests that Intel withheld rebates from Samsung in 2002 to punish it from starting to use AMD chips, later coming up with a more attractive collection of incentives that eventually led Samsung to curtail purchases from AMD.

Intel (INTC) has never been much associated with glitz. The chipmaker, after all, essentially sells high-tech widgets that few people think much about these days. But nearly everybody at times has a question or a complaint about PCs–the inspiration for an Intel-sponsored Web site that plans to add to the star power in Las Vegas next week.

The PC.com site, which posts articles and other resources to help computer owners and prospective buyers, was launched with very little promotion last year. Though it doesn’t go out of its way to hide the affiliation with Intel, it doesn’t exactly advertise it either–preferring to keep a bit of editorial distance from its deep-pocketed parent.

“Vista is built for businesses,” Brad Goldberg, Microsoft’s (MSFT) general manager for Windows product management, once said. And that may be so. It’s just not built for Intel’s (INTC) business. Because the chip-maker has decided against upgrading to Vista–ever.

“This isn’t a matter of dissing Microsoft, but Intel information technology staff just found no compelling case for adopting Vista,” a person with direct knowledge of the company’s plans told the New York Times.

Intel information technology staff just found no compelling case for adopting Vista. If that’s not a diss, then neither is “Windows Vista sucks.” Because if one half of the Wintel hegemony is balking at deploying the latest iteration of the OS on which it’s built, well that’s pretty ugly.

“I would buy a Mac today if I was not working at Microsoft,” longtime Windows development chief Jim Allchin said in January of 2004. And so too, perhaps, would Intel, if it wasn’t partners with the company.

I am a media-relations nightmare. I never prep, and I generally say what I think–and sometimes I say things before I think. I don’t know how many times people in the company have heard me say something to a reporter and later told me, ‘Jesus Christ, that’s going to be in the paper!’”

–Henry Nicholas, July 2004

According to Forbes, former Broadcom Corp. chief and founder Henry Nicholas ranks 677th on the list of the world’s wealthiest individuals. But according to a federal indictment unsealed today (full document below), he’d rank quite a bit higher on a list of the world’s most debauched. Scattered among charges related to improperly backdating stock options while he led the computer and cellphone chip-maker are some heavy drug violations. According to the indictment, it seems that while Nicholas was fraudulently backdating stock options that resulted in more than $2 billion of restated expenses, he was also conspiring to distribute controlled substances.

Those he didn’t use himself, that is. From the indictment:

In or around 2001, Nicholas distributed and used controlled substances during a flight on a private plane between Orange County and Las Vegas, causing marijuana smoke and fumes to enter the cockpit and requiring the pilot flying the plane to put on an oxygen mask.”

Nicholas also apparently had a habit of spiking the drinks of associates and customers with drugs. Generally ecstasy. Hell of a way to close a sales meeting, eh?

As noted here before, it’s hard to believe that an entrepreneur and philanthropist like Nicholas would conduct himself like a roadie on Zeppelin’s debauched 1973 tour. But then no one probably thought he was serious about building that subterranean sex lair, either. Anyway, here’s the drug indictment. Click on the box in the far right-hand corner to enlarge:
