The Grammys generated a flurry of online interest last night, but the music industry's biggest event of the year is AWOL this morning. Opportunity wasted.

I didn’t watch a second of last night’s Grammy Awards, but I’m pretty sure I caught all of it, anyway.

My Twitterstream was dominated by snarky play-by-play, and the rest of the Web was doing the same thing. Even the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal put Grammy liveblogs on their homepages.

So now it might be nice to head online and actually see–and hear–what I missed. No dice.

The official Grammy site, run by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, has plenty of clips, but none from the CBS broadcast itself–it’s all backstage, or red carpet or other footage I don’t care about. CBS.com doesn’t have anything, and neither does TV.com, CBS’s mini-Hulu.

Meanwhile, Google’s YouTube, the place where I really expect to see clips, is doing a very good/frustrating job of keeping the site scrubbed free of amateur uploads. You can find some stuff, but it takes work, and the quality is poor, and I’m pretty sure it’s getting removed quickly after it goes up.

So while I really want to see Arcade Fire’s performance–my Twitter pals were ecstatic about it–right now the only thing I can find is grainy footage of Lady Gaga doing yet another Madonna…homage. This may or may not be available by the time you read this:

[UPDATE: Ask, and you shall receive! For now. Thanks to @colinparksfried, @tdotjdot and @nolaschott]

A CBS rep notes that Grammy performances “aren’t typically available online due to rights clearance issues,” and I’m sure that’s true. Any given song can have lots of different owners, and getting all of them to agree to put it on the Web can be a huge hassle. On the other hand, it’s not an insurmountable challenge–that’s why we have Vevo.com, a Web site dedicated to nothing but music videos.

Left unsaid here is that big live events like the Grammys are now TV’s most valuable commodity, and the people who produce big live events continue to struggle with the Web. But more and more of them are getting it–even the very uptight NFL is putting highlight videos up on its site while the games are in progress.

The Grammys are already being augmented very nicely by the Web, which provided it with endless free promotion last night. But now that the live event isn’t anymore, you’d think the music industry, which can use all the promotion it could get, would be pushing very, very hard to let people see what they missed last night.

Who knows. It might even prompt someone to, you know, buy some music.

Miss last night's Golden Globes? Hulu has a summary, along with everything else you missed on TV last night. But maybe you're better off reading about it.

Here’s Hulu’s version of a highlights show: “The Morning After,” a five-minute survey of last night’s TV.

It’s the show I told you about last month, and I believe it’s the first one the Web video site–owned by GE’s NBC, Disney’s ABC and News Corp.’s Fox–has commissioned for itself. (News Corp. also owns this Web site.)

Just like Hulu said it would be, it’s a Web show about stuff that aired on TV. Nothing wrong with that–showing people clips of last night’s TV on the Web is a useful thing. I like to do it, a lot.

But this one–or, at least, this episode–is a snoozer. I wouldn’t have made it through all five minutes if my job didn’t require it.

Hulu says this is a preview of the show, and that the joint video venture would like to “develop and evolve the show with your input.”

So okay, Hulu. Here’s my input: You say your inspiration for this show was the Keith Olbermann/Dan Patrick-era “SportsCenter” on ESPN, from way back in the early ’90s.

But go back and watch those shows. See how the anchors are both praising sports and, with a wink, making fun of it? The way they’re telling you that yes, we know you’d watch this stuff all day if you could–so would we!–and yes, we think it’s silly too?

Your show scans a whole lot more like the modern-day “SportsCenter,” which also has clips, and jokes, but without any real self-awareness or bite. So I’d like some more of that, please.

Or put it another way: You know how your first set of TV ads were sharp and funny? Make your show like that!

For whatever reason, I can’t find classic “SportsCenter” clips on Google’s YouTube or anywhere else on the Web. But here’s something very similar: Olbermann doing sports for L.A.’s KCBS in 1989, courtesy Twitter’s Matt Graves:

YouTube on your phone is popular, but until now it hasn’t made Google much money. The search giant has only been able to slap ads on the homepage of its mobile version, and on search results.

That’s changing starting today, as the company begins to stick “pre-roll” ads in front of several thousand of its clips, including a new set of music videos that hasn’t been available for YouTube mobile until now.

YouTube will start running videos from Vevo, the “Hulu for Music” joint venture that it works with. And it will run ads with those clips, as well as a few thousand other clips, primarily from its network of semi-pro “partners.”

The caveats: The music clips will run only on Google’s Android handsets, and not on Apple’s iPhone or any other competitors’ phones. And the clips will be limited to whatever Vevo has available in its catalog. Which means, most notably, that Google won’t be able to show clips from Warner Music Group, since the company still hasn’t come to terms with Vevo.

That doesn’t mean iPhone users have to go without music videos, of course: There’s a Vevo iPhone app, if you’re so inclined, and there’s plenty of other ways to get music videos on your phone if you want or need to. It’s just that Google won’t make any money when you watch them.

The big picture is that YouTube says it is now generating 200 million video views a day from mobile devices (that number includes both phones and tablets like the iPad), up 3x from last year. And now it wants start turning those views into dollars, or at least pennies.

Worth noting that while YouTube has been most aggressive about putting “overlay” ads on the clips it runs on the Web, it’s not doing so here.

That makes sense, because the format would be particularly annoying on a small screen, where the real estate it eats up would be even more noticeable. And because the point of overlay ads is to get a user to click on them, which opens up a new site. That works fine on the Web, but, again, it seems like a very tough sell on a handset.

Here’s the latest example, which I first wrote about back in October: SoundCloud, a German-based file-sharing service, has raised $10 million in a funding round led by Index Ventures and Union Square Ventures.

While lots of music services are still trying to figure out how to make money by distributing copyrighted music you’ve heard of, SoundCloud is taking a different tack. As I wrote last fall:

It’s designed to let professional and amateur musicians share their own music with each other and the public, via cloud-based files that the company hosts.

Once the tunes are on SoundCloud’s servers, the service makes it easy to move the stuff around the Web, via its own widget and an API that’s showing up on lots of interesting sites, apps, services and devices, including Facebook and Apple’s iPad. You can load SoundCloud files into Spotify, the streaming music company that Index has also invested in.

The service uses the freemium model, offering most of its capabilities for free, and charging up to $700 a year for more storage and extra features.

You can also use SoundCloud for less enlightened purposes, like sharing music you don’t own. But the company has recently implemented an audible “fingerprinting” service, like the ones Google’s YouTube uses, which allows copyright owners to take down files they don’t want on the Web. And that should give the company legal cover, unless the YouTube/Viacom case takes a very different turn.

In a blog post announcing the funding, SoundCloud says it will use the money to scale faster and “be more present in the US.” It also posts short clips, using its service, from its new investors–Index’s Mike Volpi and Union Square’s Fred Wilson.

Here’s Wilson:

When companies file normal IPOs, they go into quiet periods. But there has been nothing quiet about the latest financing behind Facebook, which has evaded the public markets by rigging a way to privately sell $1.5 billion worth of shares through Goldman Sachs in a deal that values the company at $50 billion.

Tonight, an hour-long special on the topic will air at 9 pm ET on Bloomberg TV (and will be streamed live on Bloomberg’s Web site), featuring Yuri Milner, CEO of Digital Sky Technologies and one of the key investors who helped put together that deal. Unfortunately, while Bloomberg’s press release listed Milner as a “guest,” it neglected to mention that he won’t be an actual live guest (as initially reported here). Instead, clips from a Milner interview last year will be interspersed with current commentary from writers David Kirkpatrick, Paul Kedrosky and Bill Cohan, and marketing professor Scott Galloway.

Goldman has reportedly given its clients limited information and only until the end of the week to pony up a minimum of $2 million to invest in Facebook. One Goldman customer told Reuters he felt like he was being expected to invest on “blind faith.”

BoomTown’s Kara Swisher yesterday described the Goldman-Facebook deal as “sneaky,” “elite” and “opaque.”

Here’s the promo for the Bloomberg program:

While plenty of people are using their iPhones and iPads to watch video, Comcast also thinks Apple’s mobile devices can play a role in helping professional video get onto the Internet.

ThePlatform, a subsidiary of the cable giant, plans this week to launch a program that will allow workers whose job it is to post video content to use their iPhone to manage certain functions.

Workers will still have to use a PC or Mac to do the main work, but the iPhone app will allow basic tasks such as publishing a previously hidden piece of content (or taking down a piece that got published inadvertently).

“With the iPhone being a fairly ubiquitous device for media consumption, we felt it was also the perfect platform for media management,” said Ian Blaine, the CEO of thePlatform, which Comcast acquired in 2006. “It’s usually along with people wherever they are.”

Though clearly a niche product, it is the kind of application that many expect to see more of as businesses find ways of incorporating mobile devices into their office worfklow.

“I think what we are doing is a harbinger for others if they are not doing it already,” Blaine said.

Mpx, the main program developed by thePlatform, is used by Comcast itself and also sold to other cable providers such as Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Cox, as well as by individual content producers such as NBC, PBS and Canada’s CBC. Mpx is used to edit and prepare video for sending to various devices, including phones, computers and set-top boxes.

“We’ve always been in the game of publishing to mobile devices, but being able to take advantage of the platform for actually publishing is pretty great and we are excited about it,” Blaine said.

The company has been testing the product with a few of its customers. Among those excited about the new mobile version of mpx are the folks at Time Warner Cable who use thePlatform to publish their content.

“We have been working with thePlatform to create a solution that supports our producers or editors responsible for ensuring that shows or clips are ready for publication, 24 hours a day,” said Eric Manchester, a member of Time Warner Cable’s technical staff. “Having a solution we can carry on us at all times allows us to solve many time sensitive issues without being tied to our desks.”

For now, those using the iPhone app will see only thumbnails of the videos in question, but Blaine said adding full-video previews is tops on the company’s list of features to add. It will also see if there is a way to achieve similar capabilities on the BlackBerry, given that many companies also use those devices.

With Android, Blaine said the company may not even need to do a separate app because the desktop version of mpx runs using Flash, which Android supports.

One of the things that Google thinks you’ll do with Google TV is watch a lot of Google video, via YouTube. That’s why the search giant introduced a “Leanback” version of the site, designed for couch-bound surfers, over the summer.

And that’s why Google has freshened up Leanback for this weekend: Saturday is the first chance consumers will have to get their hands on Google TV for themselves, via sets sold at Sony’s Style stores. (Regular humans can buy the sets at Best Buy in a week.)

You don’t have to use Google TV to use Leanback. It will work on any PC and any browser, and it’s worth playing around with. Also, that will save me the trouble of telling you what it’s like.

I will tell you about a few tweaks Google has made to the site since its July launch, though:

You should now be able to watch any video in the YouTube catalog in Leanback mode. Previously some clips, primarily music videos, had not been available for the new format, due to licensing issues.

But just because you can watch any clip doesn’t mean you’ll want to see it on a big screen. Or to put it another way–some YouTube stuff will work particularly well on your TV, and the Leanback team has tried to show that stuff off with preselected channels and playlists.

There’s always a catch: Leanback, which had previously been ad-free, will now start showing you the preroll and overlay ads that you’re used to seeing on regular YouTube.

YouTube managers say that they’re already happy with Leanback in its current form. They cite internal research that shows YouTube users watch twice as much video when they use Leanback.

Impressive! Though I assume those tests were done on PCs, and I wonder how the experience will translate when you’re sitting 10 feet away from your screen, on your sectional.

But that’s pretty much the core question about Google TV–do people really want to watch Web video in their living room? We’ll begin to find out this fall.

Here’s a deal we can confirm: AOL is buying Web video start-up 5Min Media.

The price for the deal is between $50 million and $65 million, sources close to the situation said. AOL (AOL) plans to announce the deal Tuesday morning. UPDATE: Here’s the press release.

5Min has raised some $13 million in three years, and last spring CEO Ran Harnevo told me he was being offered the chance to raise more money at very attractive valuations.

The deal is at least part of AOL’s secret video strategy–the one that CEO Tim Armstrong acknowledged, but wouldn’t disclose–earlier this month.

5Min is a video middleman: It takes video clips that other people make and distributes them to other people’s Web sites. It says it has a library of 200,000 clips that generate 110 million views a month across 800 partner sites.

The videos come from people you’ve never heard of, and those you have, including CBS (CBS), Hearst and Scripps Networks. 5Min isn’t focused on getting the clips on Google’s (GOOG) YouTube–it’s trying to strike deals with conventional publishers that don’t have video, but would like some.

I don’t know whether 5Min’s deals allow it to retain distribution rights if it gets acquired, but I’m guessing that they do. Otherwise, 5Min is a much less attractive acquisition.

But in any case, you can see how the company would fit together with StudioNow, the video-creation platform AOL bought for $36.5 million earlier this year.

The first deal gives AOL a way to make lots of videos at low cost; the second gives it the ability to distribute those clips widely. At the right price, it’s not a head-scratcher.

No comment from AOL. I’ve left messages for Harnevo, who can be seen in the video below:

How do you celebrate a big legal victory? If you're a YouTube co-founder, there's really only one option.

Viacom promises to appeal the summary judgment that Google (GOOG) has earned in the long-running YouTube/Viacom copyright case. So it’s possible that this thing will get bounced around a few more times before it gets resolved.

Still, today’s news is a decisive, clear-cut victory for the giant video site. So you can understand why YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley wanted to perform a little victory dance this evening, via Twitter:

If you’ve spent any time at all on YouTube–or on the Internet, for that matter–you can probably guess where that link brought you:

Equal time! Here’s a less ebullient response from Viacom (VIA), via chief lawyer Michael Fricklas:

We are disappointed with the judge’s ruling, but confident we will win on appeal.

Copyright protection is essential to the survival of creative industries. It is and should be illegal for companies to build their businesses with creative material they have stolen from others. Without this protection, investment in the development of art and entertainment would be discouraged, and the many artists and producers who devote their lives to creating it would be hurt. Copyright protection is also critical to the web–because consumers love professional content and because legitimate websites shouldn’t have to compete with pirates.

YouTube and Google demonstrated that required tools to limit piracy aren’t impossible to find or even that difficult to implement–they fixed the problem of rampant piracy on YouTube after Viacom filed this lawsuit.

Before that, however, YouTube and Google stole hundreds of thousands of video clips from artists and content creators, including Viacom, building a substantial business that was sold for billions of dollars. We believe that should not be allowed by law or common sense.

This case has always been about whether intentional theft of copyrighted works is permitted under existing law and we always knew that the critical underlying issue would need to be addressed by courts at the appellate levels. Today’s decision accelerates our opportunity to do so.

You know the answer, right? But just to spell it out: Even two million Hulu eyeballs a week don't mean much for a hit TV show like "Modern Family."

What’s the future of TV? For the near future, it’s more TV.

So says TV producer Steve Levitan.

Levitan has made a bunch of money working on hit TV shows like “Just Shoot Me,” and he’s likely to make some more with ABC’s “Modern Family.” So it’s not a huge surprise to hear him make a case for the status quo.

But Levitan is also a self-professed nerd who loves technology and has tried hard to figure out how to incorporate it into his TV show. He has played around with Twitter and has created special clips for Web viewers. Problem is, he says, he can’t figure out how Internet eyeballs do him any good. And that includes the two million viewers he believes watch his show every week on Hulu.

One day, that’s going to change, as advertisers start to value Web viewers as much as TV viewers. But they’re not there now. Here’s Levitan explaining the state of the business at the D8 conference last week:

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=3C365E8B-F3CD-4865-BCC5-07345699A3E7&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

Anyone feel differently? Happy to hear from you. And I’ll put the same question to Ricky Van Veen, the College Humor co-founder who is now trying to make TV shows at IAC’s (IACI) Notional. We’re chatting this morning at Mashable’s Media Summit in New York. Here’s a conversation we had on the topic last fall:

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID={8FF8E0AA-597B-40C9-9243-375B346CEADC}&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://wsj.vo.llnwd.net/o28/players/&autoStart=false" base="rtmpt://wsj.fcod.llnwd.net/a1318/o28/video"name="microflashPlayer"><embed src="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/microPlayer.swf" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashVars="videoGUID={8FF8E0AA-597B-40C9-9243-375B346CEADC}&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://wsj.vo.llnwd.net/o28/players/&autoStart=false" base="rtmpt://wsj.fcod.llnwd.net/a1318/o28/video" name="microflashPlayer" width="272" height="180" seamlesstabbing="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" swLiveConnect="true" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash">

Big live events are supposed to be the one thing that pulls you away from your computer and toward your TV. But if you’re so inclined, the Web works as a very good substitute for things like last night’s MTV Movie Awards: Twitter tells you what you’re missing, and you can find the relevant clips later, on your own time.

In my case, I didn’t even have the option of watching last night’s show, due to a conked-out set-top box that Time Warner Cable (TWC) isn’t scheduled to fix for another four days (See! Cord cutting is real! You just have your cable guys do it for you.)

Good news is I’m not sure I missed much. As is increasingly common for this sort of thing, very little of the show made it to Google’s (GOOG) YouTube. If you want to see clips, you need to go to the Viacom-owned (VIA) channel’s own site. There, you’ll find a bunch of swearing, much of which was planned and bleeped. Like this bit, which features Aziz Ansari’s R. Kelly-style ode to “Avatar” and BP:

Watch the 2010 MTV Movie Awards at MTV.com!

But! There were also some freelance f-bombs, as well. This clip, featuring the “Twilight” cast, won’t be safe for work if your co-workers don’t like cursing:

How do you survive in online video if you don't have YouTube's scale or Hulu's content? Find a specialty. Metacafe promises to create a better version of Amazon's IMDB.

How do you survive in online video if you don’t have YouTube’s scale or Hulu’s content? Find a specialty.

That has been Metacafe’s strategy for some time now. Rather than try to offer a smaller version of YouTube, the video site has increasingly been trying to focus on a few key categories. Today, it’s launching Metacafe Movies, which doesn’t promise to show actual movies, but trailers and related clips.

Aren’t there plenty of trailer sites? Sure. But Metacafe promises that its will be deeper and better organized than the competition; CEO Erick Hachenburg imagines something closer to a video-focused IMDB.

Of course, IMDB should be the video-focused IMDB. But for whatever reason–perhaps because Amazon (AMZN), which owns the site, has other priorities–the Web’s dominant movie resource has little in the way of clips. Maybe that will change if Metacafe has success.

Following Google’s (GOOG) acquisition of YouTube in 2006, Metacafe came close to a deal with Yahoo (YHOO), but never got it done. Interesting to imagine what would have happened had Jerry Yang and company pushed hard into video a few years ago.

It's no YouTube, but Blip.TV is turning five, too. That's impressive enough for any Web video outfit, but CEO Mike Hudack also has a good story to tell: He's figuring out how to make money from the clips small-time producers make--and how to get the producers enough money to make more clips. Repeat.

YouTube isn’t the only Web video company celebrating its fifth anniversary. Blip.TV doesn’t have a celebratory channel, but it is marking the occasion in style: The New York-based company has raised $10 million in a C round led by Canaan Partners and Bain Capital.

Blip doesn’t make Web video–almost none of the Web video companies that survived the last bubble do that. Instead, Blip helps distribute clips, generally made by small-time producers, and sells ads against them. It splits the proceeds with the producers.

And like many other Web video outfits, Blip still isn’t profitable, though I’m told that could change by the end of the year. But Blip has a modest burn rate and has been steadily ramping up its list of big brand advertisers. Which is why it has been able to get away with raising only $8 million prior to its newest round.

Here’s an interview I shot with CEO Mike Hudack yesterday, in which he explains how a Web video company can survive without the backing of Google (GOOG) or big media companies. And he sketches out his vision for Web video’s future: Lots of people spending very little to make interesting stuff, and making enough money to keep on doing it.

Following that, a clip of Nostalgia Critic, one of Blip’s most successful shows. I don’t get it, but plenty of people do.

BLIP.TV RAISES $10.1 MILLION IN FUNDING

Online Media Company Secures Capital from Canaan Partners and Bain Capital Ventures.

NEW YORK, NY – May 19, 2010 — Next generation television network blip.tv today announced the closing of its third round of institutional capital, led by Canaan Partners and existing investors Bain Capital Ventures. The company will use its new funding to accelerate the growth of the independent Web shows that blip.tv hosts and distributes, expand its content services team, continue to grow its international advertising sales force and develop new products for viewers and producers.

“Blip.tv turns five this year, and I couldn’t be happier with our success to date and our growth plans for the future,” said blip.tv CEO and co-founder Mike Hudack. “We started in 2005 with a simple mission: to change the entertainment industry by making independent show production sustainable and scalable. We’re moving on to the next phase of executing against that mission, and with help from both Canaan Partners and Bain Capital Ventures I’m confident that we’ll be successful. We’re making more shows sustainable every single day, and now we’re going to accelerate that change even faster. This is an extremely exciting time.”

More than 44,000 independent show producers visit the blip.tv show creator dashboard every day to review statistics, engage with their communities of viewers, manage their shows, and release new episodes across blip.tv’s extensive distribution network. Together these shows attract more than 90 million video views a month. Eighty-five percent of those views are paired with targeted, direct-sold advertising from brands such as PepsiCo, Chevrolet, Samsung, Starbucks, AT&T and Scion.

“We’ve been following blip.tv’s growth for years, and we’re excited to invest in the company as it continues to change the entertainment industry,” said Warren Lee, Venture Partner at Canaan Partners. “Blip.tv has executed on its vision, and the company is creating a new Web television industry that is drawing top talent from traditional television networks, the film industry and garages across America. We look forward to working with Mike and his team to continue transforming entertainment together.”

YouTube's videos are now generating two billion views a day. Here are Conan O'Brien's favorites, plus his views on YouTube: A time-sink that doesn't make anyone any money, just like the rest of the Web. Angry!

YouTube is celebrating its fifth birthday by announcing that it is now generating a staggering two billion views per day. Context: In October, Google’s (GOOG) video site announced it had crossed the one billion views per day mark.

That’s a lot of videos! As usual, no word on financials, profitability, etc. But there is plenty of congratulatory back-slapping here and here.

Best part, by far: A brief anniversary message from Conan O’Brien, in which the comedian connects YouTube’s rise with America’s decline: “Nobody actually makes anything anymore. We’re all watching monkeys in propeller hats flush themselves down a toilet. And that’s why India is kicking our ass. And China, and pretty much everyone else. Switzerland, kicking our ass. Guam, way ahead of us.”

And he effectively sums up Web economics, or lack thereof:
“That’s not the point of the internet. It’s not to make money. It’s for someone you’ve never met, who’s a nerd, in Palo Alto, to make money.”

O’Brien also offers up his five favorite YouTube clips. Here are four of them. To see the fifth (something inscrutable and German) you’ll have to visit the site. If you’re time-pressed, definitely go with the cat.

Adobe says it's hard to watch Web video without Flash; Steve Jobs says it's no problem. They're both right, and wrong.

Steve Jobs says there’s no reason to cling to Flash video on the Web, because most Web video also works on the H.264/HTML5 standard he’s supporting.

But Adobe (ADBE) says the majority of the Web’s video uses its Flash standard. And if you surf the Web via Apple’s (AAPL) iPad, you’ll quickly find clips that don’t work on the Flash-free device. Instead of video, you’ll confront the dreaded blue box.

So who’s right? Depends, of course, on whom you ask. But the answer is probably somewhere in the middle.

Earlier this month, Encoding.com said that 66 percent of the videos it processes are in iPad-friendly H.264, adding that this number reflects the wider Web. But MeFeedia, a video search engine, which says it catalogs millions of videos from 30,000 sources, pegs the H.264 universe at a much lower number, 26 percent of all clips.

The two data sets aren’t necessarily at odds. Encoding.com is looking at clips it has been paid to…encode. while MeFeedia is looking at a wider range of clips, including lots of old ones that publishers either don’t want to re-encode or haven’t gotten around to re-encoding yet.

And it’s a perfectly rational decision for some publishers with big video archives–say, the New York Times (NYT)–to encode only their newer clips in H.264 for now. Because the new clips are probably responsible for the majority of their views.

It’s also worth noting that MeFeedia says it is tracking videos around the world. So its numbers are skewed by giant video sites like China’s Youku.com and Tudou.com, which are all-Flash.

Still, the H.264 cohort is growing. MeFeedia says that when it did the same tally in January, it found just 10 percent of clips in H.264. Easy enough to explain the jump as an “iPad effect.” And MeFeedia CEO Frank Sinton says that he has seen many publishers move aggressively to make their stuff iPad-ready: He cites Break, Vimeo, CNN and DailyMotion, among others.

Everyone knows that digital media are supposed to cost less than their physical counterparts. So what is Time Inc.--and every other media company that's asking premium prices for iPad apps--thinking? The publisher explains.

One subplot amid the iPad hype: A lot of grumbling about the cost of the apps, particularly from established media companies.

Example A: Time Magazine, which is asking $4.99 a week for its app–the same price you’d pay if you bought the paper edition at a newsstand.

The electronic version of the weekly does contain some bonus features, like extra photos and video clips. And some iPad users seem to be okay with it: As I type this, the app is ranked No. 16 on the iTunes “top paid” list.

But to hear the digerati tell it, Time Inc. is crazy to ask users to pony up full price for a digital good that’s available for free on the Web–even for Apple’s (AAPL) iPad browser. What are the people at Time Warner’s (TWX) magazine unit thinking?

I asked them and got this response:

We are offering a compelling, robust and beautiful product. The production of this high quality, fact-checked reporting takes resources. We believe there is a real value to this product and as consumers experience it, they will agree. We are currently only offering single copy sales, just like at your local newsstand–and, the price is the same as the physical newsstand. We will soon be offering subscriptions–both digital subscriptions and print/digital bundled subscriptions. We anticipate these subscriptions will be discounted off the newsstand price.

Two notes:

We’re less than a week into the great iPad experiment and none of this pricing is set in stone. So it’s entirely possible that Time Inc. will eventually lower the price for some of its iPad apps. But the company can’t do that if it starts low to begin with.

Note that the publisher says it will offer subscriptions at a discount from newsstand prices–not from paper prices. That’s because magazine publishers famously give away their subscriptions for a fraction of their cost. If you Google “Time magazine subscription,” for instance, the first thing you’ll see is a $20-per-year offer, (“Save 92% of the cover price!”). I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a scenario whereby the publisher asks subscribers to pay more for a tablet subscription than for a paper-and-ink version, at least for some titles.

The iPad will be a great way to watch TV shows. But people who are used to watching lots of free or cheap top-tier TV programs via the Web won't get the same experience on the iPad this weekend.

So now we know what to expect when the iPad appears Saturday: A really cool device that will be great for watching TV shows. Here’s one thing you shouldn’t look for: Lots of cheap or free TV shows–at least not ones that aired recently.

Apple (AAPL) has been pushing the TV networks to get on board for the iPad launch, but the industry is in no rush. Like everyone else in media, TV execs are trying to figure out what the iPad means for their pricing power. Which means people who are used to watching lots of free top-tier TV on the Web won’t get the same experience on the iPad this weekend.

Meanwhile, the networks have resisted Apple’s lobbying to drop prices on the stuff they sell at the iTunes store. So if you want to watch the latest episode of “The Simpsons” on your iPad this weekend, it’s still going to cost you $1.99 (and $2.99 for high-def).

And while Hulu is building an app for the iPad, the plan, as I reported in February, is to make it part of a subscription offering. That’s scheduled to roll out sometime this year, but it won’t be ready in two days.

Where things stand now:

Hulu has the basics of a subscription plan, which includes access to an iPad app, worked out, sources tell me. But it will take a while for the company to negotiate rights clearances. A key part of the plan is to offer users the ability to watch Hulu on mobile devices, and the joint venture needs to wrangle permission from its programming partners to do that. So no Hulu app Saturday. When might we see one? Within “single digit months,” says an insider with a wry sense of humor.

Apple, which pushed a TV subscription service last fall, switched gears in recent months and tried persuading TV executives to cut their iTunes prices to 99 cents. But executives at two of the big four broadcast networks–CBS and Fox–have told me they’re not dropping prices on their big shows right now. No word from Disney’s (DIS) ABC or GE’s (GE) NBC yet. It’s possible that ABC, which has tight ties to Apple CEO Steve Jobs and is already promoting the iPad on its shows, may drop prices unilaterally. But my understanding is that Apple was aiming for across-the-board cuts.

As The Wall Street Journal notes, both CBS (CBS) and ABC are planning to deliver free TV to the iPad on Saturday. ABC will do so via an app, and the Journal says it could have a “a large number” of shows at launch. But CBS, which will use a Web site customized for the device, will have only one full-length program–“Survivor”–and some short clips. You can blame encoding issues for the limited offering, but if CBS really wanted to get a lot of stuff on the iPad at launch, it would.

One intriguing possibility for Saturday: There are reports of a Netflix (NFLX) app that would let subscribers to the company’s “Watch Instantly” service use it on the iPad. That’s not free. But it would be cool.

YouTube is trying out a new look today. You can't see it yet, but it should be up later this afternoon. In the meantime, you can get a sense of it via an email YouTube sent out to its partners this morning, posted in full after the jump.

YouTube is trying out a new look today. You can’t see it yet, but it should be up later this afternoon. In the meantime, you can get a sense of it via an email YouTube sent out to its partners this morning, posted in full below. Or you can check out these blog posts from earlier in the year, when the company previewed the changes for people who read YouTube blog posts.

Google’s (GOOG) video site says this is one of the “biggest redesigns in YouTube history,” but my hunch is that most YouTube users won’t notice any difference at all since they’re paying attention to the video clips and not the window dressing around it.

YouTube is briefing the press a little later today, and a PR rep promises that the email is merely a “condensed sliver” of what the company will be talking about. If true, I’ll update with anything relevant.

UPDATE: Apologies, wasn’t able to listen to the call, after all. If you want to play reporter, you can take a gander at the press materials Google provided (before and after screenshots, metrics to support the change, etc) here.

Dear Partner,

We want to provide you with an update on YouTube’s new video page, which we’ve been hard at work on for the last several months. You can read more about it here:

http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/01/video-page-gets-makeover.html

http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/02/latest-changes-to-video-page-new.html

On Wednesday, March 31st we’re happy to let you know that we’ll be transitioning all YouTube videos to this new video page.

As a result, we’d like to highlight a couple items that will be of interest to you:

* The channel banner placement will change: Branding on the video page moves to a more prominently placed (albeit smaller) banner on top of the video, substituting for the text channel name and link. Please upload a graphic with the following dimensions: 25px (height) by max 170px (width is flexible up to this amount). Instructions on how to edit or change the
banner are here:

http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?&answer=172994

This banner will continue to link to your channel. Please update your banner if you have an arrow pointing to the subscribe button or another area on the page.

* The “Subscribe” button will move to a more prominent location at the top of the page: As you can see in this blog post:

http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/02/latest-changes-to-video-page-new.html

The “Subscribe” button will now be at the top of the page, to the right of your channel banner…so it will stand out even more :)

* We’re introducing a new “see more videos” pane: This new “more videos” area on top of the video allows for seamless exploration of content from your channel; click on the arrow next to the number of uploads to access a grid displaying all of your channel’s videos. This makes it easier for users to browse your whole library while watching one of your videos.

This new video page makeover is one of the biggest redesigns in YouTube history–and we’re excited to make YouTube a better place for you and your content!

Lastly, we want to remind you that YouTube sends occasional product-related email communications that are relevant to our Partners. To ensure that you’re eligible to receive our updates, check your Email Options settings within your Account and opt in. You can see the instructions on how to do this by following this link:

http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=176643

Still reading? Okay, here’s your Easter egg, a classic Spencer Davis Group YouTube recommended to me this morning:

The confusing clips with Jerry and Bill Gates were supposed to be confusing. You buying that?

Remember those Microsoft ads starring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld? The ones that confused and upset the blognoscenti and vanished from TV after just a brief stint in 2008?

All part of the plan, Microsoft says now. David Webster, chief strategy officer for Redmond’s central marketing group, tells TechFlash that the ads were supposed to be confusing. So you’d pay more attention to them, and to the next several campaigns Microsoft had loaded up.

“We figured that that sort of obscure nature of the communications would make people lean in a little more closely to see what we were going to next,” he says. “And that part certainly worked, in the sense that everybody leaned in, and they paid a lot more attention to our subsequent work than I think they might have had we just started with it.”

This actually sounds like a plausible explanation to me. And I seem to be in the minority of people who actively liked the ads. Still, Webster and his co-workers certainly seem to have had their feelings hurt by the public raspberries the ads generated. Check out the defensive tone here:

But you know, it is what it is, and they will live forever in Internet posterity as being either something that people treat as a cult classic, or as a random curiosity. But I still get mail from people saying, “Hey, could you guys do that as a sitcom? I’d love it as a web series, I think they had great chemistry, I’d like to see them do it in the future.” Like anything, things become cult classics for some people for some reason, and there’s a core group of people who really wanted to see us go further with those.

It’s also interesting that many of the original clips of the ad have disappeared from YouTube, though you can still find a few that give you a good sense of what Microsoft was trying to. Go ahead and refresh your memory:

How a guy who likes playing piano like Keith Jarrett became Internet famous in a few days. "I guess that's why they call it viral."

The intrepid team at Mashable has an excellent get: An interview with “Merton,” the Chatroulette Piano Guy.

The important takeaway, which I’d basically deduced on my own: He’s definitely not Ben Folds.

Merton declines to identify himself for Mashable’s Brenna Ehrlich. Though I gather that once his identity is unmasked, it won’t be anyone you’ve ever heard of anyway.

Ehrlich’s Skype chat with Merton runs 15 minutes, and if you’ve got time, I suggest watching the whole thing, because it’s both fascinating and charming. It also rubs off just a bit of charm from the phenomenon, though. Because the truth is always a bit less fun than the story you cook up in your head.

If you’re time-pressed, here are my notes:

Merton plays piano all the time, though it’s not clear if he’s a professional. He’s not in a band. He primarily does improvisational stuff in the “brooding, introspective” vein of Keith Jarrett and Tori Amos.

He filmed the Chatroulette videos over two nights, in three-hour sessions. He and his pals edited the footage to three five-minute clips.

He put the clips up on YouTube as a lark and initially kept them private. Now they’re approaching five million views, but he says that wasn’t his intent. “i didn’t give it some huge web site like College Humor… i guess that’s why they call it viral.”

He did a new session a few days ago, and not surprisingly “my experience was very different because everyone knew who I was…it’s more fun one way, and a little less fun another way.”

What about all the naked dudes Chatroulette is famous for? “I’m not deeply creeped out by those people.” But he understands why other people might be. “I don’t think there should be any children on Chatroullete ever, for so many different reasons.”

He loves Ben Folds’s tribute, of course. He also understands why casual observers might think the two men were the same person. “We’re both white guys who play the piano.”

Putting the stuff up anonymously “wasn’t really a strategy,” but it was “empowering.” Merton knows this can’t last forever. “Eventually, someone’s going to find me out, and that’s fine…I’m pretty sure that I would have the most fun if i went undetected for as long as possible.”

Not addressed in the interview: How is Merton going to cash in on this? And why did Google (GOOG) force him to take down his clip yesterday?

I think I can answer the latter question. It seems that some of the Chatrouletters in the clip made privacy claims, and you can figure out which ones when you watch the re-edited video.

Life before Google for Chad Hurley and Steve Chen: Lots of users, not much revenue, and big costs that got bigger every month. Don't try this at home!

There’s no smoking gun in the YouTube-Viacom papers, but there is some great stuff. Like these documents, which offer an unprecedented look at the finances behind the world’s most successful video site.

I’m not exactly sure why Viacom dug up YouTube’s profit-and-loss statement and balance sheet from its pre-Google days, but I’m glad it did. You can see the entire thing, which covers YouTube’s birth in the spring of 2005 through August 2006, at the bottom of this post.

But these excerpts give you a very good snapshot of what was going on in the company’s early days–hypergrowth, followed, eventually, by revenue (click to enlarge):

Some context: Chad Hurley registered the YouTube domain in February 2005, but the site wasn’t up and running for a few more months. Co-founder Jared Karim uploaded YouTube’s first video, “Me at the zoo,” in late April 2005.

By December 2005, users were uploading 6,000 clips a day, and the site was streaming 2.5 million videos a day. By February 2006, those numbers had jumped to 20,000 and 18 million, respectively. In July 2006, YouTube users uploaded 2.1 million clips and watched three billion of them.

Which explains the skyrocketing Web-hosting bills. But do note the burst of revenue from direct sales in August 2006, which allowed the company to generate a gross profit. A lot of people assumed that YouTube had to find a buyer like Google (GOOG) a few months later because it couldn’t pay its own bandwidth bills. But these numbers suggest that this may not be the case.

Also of note for Web video and Web ad nerds/historians: Check out the detailed breakdown of YouTube’s ad revenue and hosting costs, both real and projected, circa December 2005.

The YouTube-Viacom documents released today are chock full of interesting morsels. Feel free to ignore most of them.

The YouTube-Viacom documents released today are chock full of interesting morsels. Feel free to ignore most of them.

Because if you’re trying to handicap the way the copyright lawsuit pans out, today’s document dump won’t do much to help you. There are revelations here, but they’re of the minor and historical variety, and I’ll get to some of them later.

No smoking gun, though. Just a lot of chest-beating and desk-thumping as both sides talk past each other.

Still, it does make for fun reading if you’re of a certain troubled mindset. If you’re not, here’s a summary:

Viacom’s case: YouTube was full of content that wasn’t supposed to be there, and both YouTube and Google knew it.

Of course they knew it! Anyone who visited the site in 2005 and 2006 knew it. The problem was what to do about it.

And that’s the most interesting part of the emails and IM exchanges Viacom has dug up: They let you watch YouTube’s co-founders, and later, Google executives, argue over the best way to keep the site growing like a weed while fending off the lawyers.

Actually, they knew the lawyers would show up eventually. “Ok man, save your meal money for some lawsuits! ;) no really, I guess we’ll just see what happens,” co-founder Chad Hurley tells partners Steve Chen and Jawed Karim via email in July 2005, as the three men decide to leave some copyrighted stuff on the site.

As as YouTube boomed, Google (GOOG) was trying to figure out how its lackluster Google Video site could compete. The big debate, according to former executive David Eun: “Whether we should relax enforcement of our copyright policies in an effort to stimulate traffic growth, despite the inevitable damage it would cause to relationships with content owners.”

Google’s eventual answer, of course, was to buy YouTube. But it went in with open eyes. A due diligence report estimated that just 10 percent of the “premium” stuff on the site was authorized.

Google’s case: Viacom–which talked about buying YouTube–was perfectly happy to use our site to market its movies and TV shows. Until it wasn’t.

Of course it was! In 2005 and 2006, all of the entertainment companies were desperately trying to get their clips in front of the site’s huge audience. Even more so at Viacom (VIA), whose youthful audience was spending lots of time on YouTube.

And the fact that Viacom executives, who had lost MySpace to Rupert Murdoch (remember when MySpace was a world-beater?), were thinking about buying YouTube–in part so Murdoch wouldn’t get it–shouldn’t be surprising, either.

Google makes a lot of the fact that Viacom “secretly” uploaded videos to YouTube, either via its employees or from marketing shops it hired. But I don’t get the impression that the “secret” uploads were supposed to dupe YouTube. I get the impression they were trying to dupe YouTube users into thinking the videos were edgy and cool.

“The goal is to make it look “hijacked,” an executive at Viacom’s Spike network told the producers of a mixed martial arts show, describing a video he gave them so that they could seed it on YouTube. The idea was to make the clip “look as though it was leaked out by production.”

Viacom’s embrace of YouTube does bolster Google’s case in one way. Google shows, fairly effectively, that Viacom’s lawyers have had a hard time figuring out which YouTube clips the company authorized. If Viacom can’t figure out what’s supposed to be on the site, Google argues, how do you expect YouTube employees to know?

So. Strip out all of the depositions, documents and emails, and we’re back to where we started. This case will hinge on the way the court decides to interpret federal copyright law.

Viacom argues that YouTube is a video version of Napster or Grokster–designed to profit from intellectual property it knows is stolen. And Google argues that it’s doing exactly what the Digital Millennium Copyright Act tells it do–asking its users to behave, hoping they do, and taking down offending clips when their owners ask them to.

So pay attention to that ruling–it’s going to be really important. But unless you’re paid to keep an eye on digital media, you can ignore most of today’s paperwork.

Another sign that Google is serious about wringing more money out of YouTube: It is adding ads to the video’s mobile site.

Another sign that mobile ads are still in their infancy: Google isn’t using its favorite video ad format on the YouTube ads.

Boot up your Apple (AAPL) iPhone or Android handset to m.youtube.com today and you’ll start seeing ads like these:

But while you may see banner ads on YouTube’s mobile home, search and browse pages, you won’t see ads on the clips themselves.

Those will come eventually, Shishir Mehrotra, YouTube’s director of monetization, told Advertising Age, but in the near term, it’s too difficult for the company to pull off. That’s because there are too many handsets, with different standards and requirements, to support.

That’s a bummer for the Google (GOOG) unit, since it is particularly fond of the “overlay” ads that run on the bottom third of many of its clips. Then again, mobile is still a tiny market opportunity for YouTube: The company says it serves “tens of millions of views per day,” which sounds like a lot until you consider that the main site is serving a billion views daily.

Note that YouTube doesn’t seem to be advertising yet on its specialized iPhone app. Wonder what to make of that…

Smule's Jeff Smith is one of the app revolution's success stories. But while he's a big hit at Apple's iTunes, he has no intention of branching out into Google's store. Here's his explanation.

Smule’s Jeff Smith is one of the app revolution’s success stories. His start-up has generated some of the biggest hits at Apple’s iTunes app store, from novelty items like Sonic Lighter to more ambitious stuff like Leaf trombone.

The biggest hit so far: An ambitious novelty called “I Am T-Pain,” which allows users to record songs using the rapper’s sort-of-trademark “autotune” voice processor. If you don’t know what that means, best to check it out here. (Or check out the demo clips of T-Pain and other Smule apps at the bottom of this post.)

All this success has translated into real money–more than four million paid downloads, at something like $2.50 a pop. And this has allowed Smule to quickly raise $13.5 million in venture money from the likes of Shasta Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners.

I assumed that some of that money would be earmarked for moving apps to other mobile operating systems, particularly Google’s (GOOG) Android OS. Nope, says Smith–he’s working exclusively through Apple (AAPL).

Smith is part of a small but vocal chorus of app developers who say they don’t want to move to Android, even though it is growing quickly. His complaints: He doesn’t like the way the store merchandises its wares, and he doesn’t want to have to create different apps for each handset Android supports.

In fairness, Apple has its share of vocal app developer critics as well, and that group got louder this month during the iPorn imbroglio.

And if you wanted to be overly cynical, you could point out that Smule has been a featured Apple partner for some time. Smule’s products have gotten stage time during Apple product announcements and have been highlighted in the company’s press releases.

But Smith isn’t betting the future on Apple, either. His business plan involves generating revenue from other places besides the iTunes app store. I’ll let him explain in this interview, which we taped during Billboard’s Music & Money event yesterday.

Did we finally get our fill of Web video?

Maybe, according to comScore: The Internet traffic counter says Americans' appetite for Web clips actually shrank in January.

Did we finally get our fill of Web video?

Maybe, according to comScore: The Internet traffic counter says Americans’ appetite for Web clips actually shrank in January.

ComScore says 173.4 million people watched 32.4 billion streams that month. That’s down from 177.6 million and 33.2 billion respectively, in December.

A minor dip, to be sure. Bear in mind that the number of videos streamed is more than double the total we saw a year ago.

And maybe you can chalk the month-to-month drop on the Christmas holidays, which give people lots of downtime that they tend to spend on the Web.

Still, given that we’ve been consuming ever-increasing amounts of video for quite some time, it’s worth noting.

It’s also worth noting that comScore’s (SCOR) numbers don’t mean exactly what you think they do.

When comScore says that Hulu streamed 903,078 videos in January (down 10 percent from December), it doesn’t mean that Americans watched 903,078 shows. It means they watched some combination of 903,078 clips and advertisements, because comScore counts them both as streams.

In other words, a single episode of say, “The Daily Show,” could count as multiple streams, depending on the number of ads Hulu showed.

There’s nothing wrong with counting this way as long as we all know what the numbers mean. But comScore itself acknowledges that it’s confusing. And the company says it plans to break out ads and content at some point in the nearish future.

ComScore’s competitor, Nielsen, meanwhile, already distinguishes between the two. (If you want more on this, check out Hulucination, an awesomely obsessive blog by Big Money writer Chadwick Matlin).

Back to the numbers. Beyond the dip, pretty much the same thing we see every month: Hulu–owned by News Corp.’s (NWS) Fox, GE’s (GE) NBC and Disney’s (DIS) ABC–streams more video than anyone. Except for Google’s (GOOG) YouTube, which dwarfs everyone.

Meanwhile Vevo, the “Hulu for music videos” owned by two of the big music labels, shows up on the Top 10 list in its first full month of operation.

In other news: Did you know you can choreograph a figure-skating routine to “Smells Like Teen Spirit”?
