Sony’s computer entertainment CEO offers a piece of advice for people who ask about mobile and tablet gaming. Raaar!

The console wars have officially kicked off, with Microsoft and Sony both hosting press conferences at E3 to announce price points — $499 and $399, respectively — and a whole lot of game titles meant to get gamers geared up for the console releases this holiday season.

But there are plenty of questions about certain features of the consoles — around game sharing, cloud-based streaming and how motion-sensor devices will tie in. I had the chance to sit down with Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, to ask him how DRM restrictions will really work, and what he thinks about the Xbox One’s $499 price point.

AllThingsD: First off, people seemed really excited at last night’s [Sony PlayStation] event when you announced the no-DRM policy, which would allow for freer sharing of games. But this morning there was still confusion, and some countered that there are restrictions on game sharing. Can you offer a simple explanation for how this will work with the PS4?

Any game that is made for PS4 that is physical goods, whether first-party or third-party, can go into a PS4 and play regardless of where it came from. The first player will play it, no problem, the second player will play it, no problem. What I was referring to was the online proposition. (This example was later given to me by a Sony spokesman: If you buy a used disc from GameStop, you’ll have no problem popping that disc in and playing it from your PlayStation 4. The issue may arise when you try to jump online and play with other players. At that point, a third-party publisher may impose a fee or not allow that.)

The easiest way to explain it is — if you understand how it works on PlayStation 3, then that’s the same way it will work on PlayStation 4. No changes there. We’ve been out for six and a half years. It’s the same experience.

So, if it’s the same as it has been for six years, why did you announce “No DRM” at the press conference?

I think there was a tremendous amount of speculation and concern, for whatever reason, that the relationship between the consumer and their game was going to change. And I think a lot of the announcements from Microsoft led to that speculation, which led to, “What is Sony going to do?” So, even if it didn’t constitute a change in policy for us, we needed to clarify our policies quite literally.

Another point I wanted to clarify was around massive multiplayer online gaming. At the press conference, Sony indicated that there would now be a charge of $5 a month for MMO. Is that the case?

You need to be a PlayStation Plus member on PS4 to play online multiplayer, yes. If you play offline, if you have a Netflix or a Hulu Plus subscription, you don’t need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber, but if you want to be an online multiplayer, you do need to be a member. That is different from PlayStation 3. On the PlayStation 3 presently and going forward, you don’t need to be a Plus member to play online multiplayer.

In the recent past, there has been some attention around motion-sensor devices as a way to get people excited about the consoles as they’ve been aging. Last night we didn’t hear much about that — from either console maker. What do you see as the future of motion sensors in gaming?

We’ve got a camera that we’re proud of that will retail separately for $59.99. We’ve certainly made the dev kits available for it. Whether our first-party studios or third-party studios are interested in it or think they can enhance gaming by using that, well, that’s certainly available to them. I think we’re not dictating to the consumer or to the development community that they need to take advantage of that. It’s there as an option. If they’re interested, we’ll continue to offer that. But the message, the value proposition we were trying to annunciate last night didn’t include motion gaming or the camera.

What was your reaction to the price point of the Microsoft Xbox One?

You always like to be below your competition, as opposed to above it. We’ve certainly experienced it the other way around. I felt a lot better coming out at the $399 price, if the competition was going out at $499. Frankly, we executed our strategy … and regardless of what Microsoft would have announced, our price was our price.

Look, being at a price premium is a challenge, one that we certainly haven’t enjoyed. I think if you look at every generation of hardware back to Pong, as the install base grows and the manufacturing price comes down, the price comes down. And so, while I can’t guarantee that’s going to happen down the road, if it didn’t, that would be the first time that’s happened. And at the same time, the machines progress. They actually get better than they are at day one.

The one thing I think our announcement did was quell any notion that the console was on its way out, which is what people who aren’t really into gaming think is happening. Turn to anyone, any of the gamers here in this crowd [at E3] and ask them if they’re turning to smartphones and tablets over consoles. And then run.

Is the new Halo worth $499? The gamers shall be the judges.

Despite its age, the Microsoft Xbox 360 has held up well against the console competition, due in part to the company’s approach of offering both top-notch games and premium media streaming through the system.

Now, Microsoft is betting a new batch of games will sway gamers towards its upcoming Xbox One — which will cost $500.

These better be some killer games.

Most of the focus at Microsoft’s E3 event earlier today was on software. Some key, exclusive Xbox One titles on the way are Ryse, Killer Instinct!, Crimson Dragon and Sunset Overdrive. Also demoed: Forza Motorsport 5 and Battlefield 5.

And we saw a sneak peek of the next version of Halo, due out in 2014.

The company gave a nod to indie games, as well. Project Spark utilizes Microsoft’s SmartGlass application and will aim to compete with Sony’s LittleBigPlanet. Minecraft and a new game called D4 will be available on the One. (There’s already a Minecraft for Xbox 360, but an upcoming Xbox One version promises bigger maps and more multiplayer options.)

Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison said that 200 indie developers have launched more than 400 games for Xbox to date, totaling $1 billion in sales.

Despite a couple of audio glitches during the show, the trailers and game-play videos got a warm reception from the gamer crowd. Xbox Live Gold subscribers will now have access to two free game downloads a month. And in what’s likely a relief to many Xbox gamers, Microsoft is ditching its “Points” currency for the upcoming One, and will charge users in local currency — a.k.a. real dollars.

Speaking of real dollars! Then the price of the new Xbox One was announced. Must-have titles, exclusive to the Xbox One, become must-weigh titles.

The Redmond, Wash.-based company said that the Xbox One will ship in November for $499. (Microsoft first announced its highly-anticipated, next-generation console at an event at company headquarters late last month.)

That console, by the way, won’t be backwards-compatible with your old games.

In the meantime, Microsoft is putting out a new, slimmer Xbox 360 that borrows features from the One.

To date, Microsoft has sold more than 76 million Xbox 360 consoles. Recent data from the NPD group, which releases a monthly report on the pulse of the videogame industry, showed that 130,000 Xbox 360 units were sold in April 2013, compared with 100,000 unit sales for Sony PlayStation and under 50,000 for the Nintendo Wii U.

130,000 unit sales isn’t much to write home about, but for Xbox, that’s still 28 consecutive months of lording over the PlayStation, the Wii U and the Wii.

Later tonight Sony will host its own event at E3, and all eyes and ears will be straining for announcements around the Japanese electronic maker’s own upcoming console, the PS4.

If Sony undercuts the price of the Xbox One, it’s going to be a real battle for space in Santa’s gift bag this year.

The Xbox One is not an iteration, Microsoft says. It's a complete media overhaul

After the glitzy unveiling of the Xbox One this morning in Redmond, Microsoft dove into the technical details that it says make the new console a worthy successor to the Xbox 360.

The short version of the pitch: The One is not an iteration; it’s a complete media overhaul.

“When you look at people who are watching media today … it’s a very dynamic world,” development director Boyd Multerer said during a panel discussion by Xbox team members. “We realized we had a real problem.”

Panelists described the console as starting from a “blank slate,” since the rise of both laptops and mobile devices as people’s preferred computing hardware happened after the Xbox 360 launched in 2005. Multerer said the company chose to start over rather than bank on the more advanced hardware in the Xbox One to carry it forward.

The biggest software-side change, as noted earlier, is the ability to use your voice to launch apps in tandem with one another (for example, to make a Skype call while you’re watching a movie). In other words, the Xbox One is competing with the “second screen” of phones or tablets by trying to give viewers the ability to multitask on their TV screens.

Basically, the One’s operating system is split into two sections: One resource-heavy partition for games, aimed at giving developers a predictable amount of power, and another partition running constantly in the background that can juggle multiple side apps for a “long period of time,” Multerer said.

Fellow panelist and Microsoft CVP Todd Holmdahl described the connected motion sensor, Kinect, as “completely redesigned from the ground up.” He said it has a 60 percent better field of view and the ability to detect much smaller objects, like fingers, which should make motion controls more accurate.

Microsoft’s new gaming and media console will be called Xbox One and will launch “later this year,” the company announced at an event on its campus in Redmond, Wash., this morning.

The event, Xbox: A New Generation Revealed, began with a video message from Microsoft employees, celebrities and Xbox players. “For the first time, you and your TV are going to have a relationship,” one of the employees said in the video.

“Today, we put you at the center of a new generation in the living room,” interactive entertainment president Don Mattrick said in a welcome address.

“The living room has changed radically over the last eight years,” Mattrick said. “To continue to lead, we must provide compelling answers to new questions.”

The device is a sleek black box that sits horizontally on the table, with a Kinect mounted on top; the accompanying game controller is also black. However, marketing CVP Yusuf Mehdi demoed voice and hand-gesture controls, directed at the Kinect attached to the Xbox, that are intended to replace remotes.

Users will turn the console on with their voices by saying “Xbox on.” When they say things like “Xbox, movies,” “Xbox, game” or “Xbox, TV,” the console launches the appropriate media service.

The short version: “Games, music, movies, web, and now, Skype and live TV.” As predicted, this is an uber-device for the living room, not a games-focused console.

Mehdi also demoed the ability to open multiple services simultaneously. While watching the first Star Trek movie, he received a Skype call from a coworker and opened Internet Explorer to look for tickets to the new sequel.

The motion-sensing Kinect will be bundled with the Xbox One, and now understands human motion better — including what it looks like when humans balance — and has the ability to use heartbeat data.

More than 300,000 servers will power the new Xbox Live experience on Xbox One. A built-in DVR lets players record and rediscover videos of their gameplay. And a few specs: 8 gigabytes system memory, 500 GB hard drive, a Blu-Ray drive, HDMI in/out and USB 3.0.

Nearly half an hour into the talk, games finally took center stage, by way of EA Sports’ Andrew Wilson, who announced “revolutionary” versions of the company’s pro sports games, powered by a new engine called “EA Sports Ignite.” Then, Microsoft Studios’ Phil Spencer said his studio will be releasing 15 exclusive games for Xbox One in its first quarter, eight of which are new franchises.

Xbox Entertainment Studios’ Nancy Tellem then took the stage to talk about how TV on Xbox will be more immersive and social. “Xbox is about to become the next watercooler,” she said. A live-action Halo TV series, produced by Steven Spielberg, will be coming to Xbox.

A partnership between Xbox and the NFL will integrate live game broadcasts with fantasy football. That multi-service feature Mehdi demoed will show fantasy scores auto-updating as the game on the field evolves.

The “one more thing” (if such a phrase is not verboten at a Microsoft event) is that the downloadable content for Call of Duty: Ghosts will come to Xbox One first.

Microsoft said more information about the Xbox One would be released at the industry conference E3 next month.

Sony gives some guidance on how much the new PlayStation might cost.

In case you missed it last night, Sony announced — but didn’t exactly unveil — its latest videogame console, the PlayStation 4.

But while the gaming hardware was notably absent, consumers did get a glimpse of some key upcoming game titles, as well as Sony’s plans to offer cloud gaming, more integration with PS Vita, and even some concept games that use Sony’s motion-sensor device, the Move.

AllThingsD sat down with Jack Tretton, the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, to discuss the future of the gaming console — as well as why Sony didn’t show theirs last night — and Sony’s strategy of “doubling down” on its hardcore gaming audience.

I think it was Sony’s Andrew House who said right off the bat that the living room is no longer the focal point of gaming. Can you further explain this idea and how it relates to the future of the console?

My interpretation is that the living room used to be the only place that gaming lived. Now it’s the primary place, but it’s not the exclusive place. So I still think that sitting on the couch in front of the TV with a powerful console like PlayStation is the nerve center of the experience, but it doesn’t end there — it extends out into the world, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on smartphones and tablets and dedicated devices like Vita. It’s a little bit scary if you’re a core gamer, because you feel like if you go to sleep, you might miss something.

A good portion of tonight’s event was on game titles, not as much on cloud streaming, mobile or entertainment. Is Sony PlayStation doubling down on its position with hard-core gamers?

Well, I think the console has evolved beyond strictly gaming devices. People expect multimedia capabilities, and that’s certainly a given. But what we’re all about, in our DNA, is the gaming and the gamers. You buy [PlayStation] because you’re a gamer and you enjoy playing games, and you use it for other purposes, but we’re first and foremost about that core gamer that eats, sleeps and drinks the gaming.

I think there are more gamers today than there have been ever before, and the core is really strong, and loyal.

But at the same time, at least in the U.S. market, Microsoft has had the best-selling console for many months in a row now, and they’ve taken a media-heavy approach. What’s your thought on their strategy?

We look at the market in worldwide terms, and every market is extremely important to us. The facts are, we debuted the PlayStation 3 at $599, which was an extremely steep price barrier for a lot of consumers. And we debuted a year after Microsoft, but on a worldwide basis, we’ve sold the same, if not more, devices. I think we’re at 77 million sold right now — it’s basically splitting hairs. Despite all that, our message has been extremely well-received around the world.

Plus, if you look at multimedia services, we’re the No. 1 streaming device when it comes to Netflix, not Xbox. They’re trying to — I don’t really know what they’re trying to do. I’d rather not comment on their strategy. But we’re trying to say we’re all about the gamers and, by the way, there’s multimedia out there. I think the people who tuned in to see this live streaming event, from all around the world, were watching to see the gaming.

Will the new console cost $599 to start?

I certainly hope not. I think we’re very proud of what we delivered with the PlayStation 3 in terms of technology, and that we were able to enhance the features while still reducing the price to $249. But I think our goal with this is to debut at a more consumer-friendly price. But we haven’t made any final decisions about what the price will be at launch.

Why didn’t we see the new console today?

I guess when I think about the console, you open it up, you look at it, you certainly look at it when you insert a disc, but for most people, it’s behind a cabinet or on a shelf somewhere and you spend all your time looking at the screen. And we wanted to show people the screen. There will be multiple opportunities to share the look of the console between now and the launch. We just didn’t choose this first event as the time to show it.

But is it ready?

I mean, we’re certainly capable of showing playable game content, but we don’t have a mass-production box that we can bring out and pull out. That’s still in development in terms of final specs and design.

It wasn’t a big surprise today that there were some cloud-gaming announcements, given Sony’s acquisition of Gaikai. But cloud gaming, especially when it comes to graphics-heavy stuff, can suffer some technical difficulties. How does Sony plan to manage that?

I think that all credit goes to Gaikai, and all credit goes to Sony for recognizing the strength of Gaikai and acquiring them. We’ve cerainly had cloud storage, but Gaikai seemed to be well ahead of anybody else that we saw, and were doing things we didn’t think were possible. So I think the acquisition allows us to do things that are more in line with consumer expectations; allow them to play the games they expect.

And PS4 can play those games. I’ve certainly seen it done that every game we’ve ever published, up through PS3, is playable with no latency. I don’t know if we’re saying we’re at that stage yet, but we think we can get there in the near term.

What a console-tease.

It’s finally here: The next-generation console.

Except, well, you can’t see the console.

As expected, Sony tonight announced the PlayStation 4, the newest videogame console from the Japanese electronics maker.

However, no console was shown during the two-hour event. Sony instead appealed to its hard-core gaming audience with a string of new game titles.

We know the new PlayStation 4 includes an x86, 8-core AMD “Jaguar” CPU, an enhanced PC graphics processor and a secondary custom chip for background processing of digital titles. It comes with 8 gigabytes of internal memory. And its controller is a DualShock 4 controller with a touchpad and “3-D” camera-tracking.

Sony said the console has been in development for the past five years. But, aside from teasing that the console would be available in the 2013 holiday season, no additional details on price or availability were given.

There are some interesting new features to the PS4 system. It will offer the ability to “trim” portions of the game and share clips of the games with friends over social networks, in addition to sharing over the PlayStation network. And Sony, perhaps looking to revitalize its not-exactly-best-selling PS Vita, also showed how PS4 games can be played remotely on the handheld mobile device.

As expected, cloud gaming is also a part of the PS4 announcement: Gaikai co-founder and CEO Dave Perry appeared on stage to discuss how Gaikai, which Sony acquired last year, is being integrated to make game titles readily available in the cloud. Gamers will be allowed to try some titles before they buy.

PS4 games can be played remotely on the PS Vita.

The company kicked off the event stating that it marked a bold step forward for Sony as a company. “The living room is no longer the focal point of the PlayStation ecosystem,” said Sony’s president and CEO of Sony Computer entertainment Andrew House.

Despite that, Sony spent a good portion of its event on Tuesday showing off game trailers for exclusive console titles like Knack, Killzone Shadow Fall and Drive Club, showing more attention toward its hard-core gaming audience than video-streaming consumers or mobile game adopters. Executives from Capcom, Square Enix and Ubisoft also appeared on stage touting new game titles.

And Bungie, the game developer behind the popular Halo franchise, showed a new first-person shooter game called Destiny that will be available for PS4 and PS3.

The new PlayStation 4 console comes at a particularly perilous time for the traditional videogame industry. Gaming software sales, especially, have suffered due to the rise of cheap or free Web-based games, while Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have allowed several-year gaps in between new consoles, causing some to question the relevance of the console.

An image from Killzone Shadow Fall, one of the new games exclusive to PS4.

Sony to date has sold more than 70 million PlayStation 3 units worldwide, and claims more than 110 million members in its PlayStation Network. But about two years ago, the company suffered a setback when roughly 77 million user accounts were hacked, causing the company to temporarily shut down the network. Sony later said the hack cost the company $171 million that fiscal year.

In January the NPD Group, a research firm that tracks videogame hardware and software but not digital sales, reported that the Microsoft Xbox 360 had outsold the other home consoles for the 25th month in a row. But that was a mere silver lining: Software and hardware sales overall were still down 13 and 17 percent, respectively, when adjusted for a four-week month.

Microsoft is also widely expected to roll out its own new console, possibly named the Microsoft Xbox 720, this year.

Let’s hope Microsoft shows off the actual console at its event.

Some things to consider, aside from new videogame titles.

It’s finally here — the long-awaited Sony PlayStation event, where the Japanese electronics maker is widely expected to unveil its next-generation videogame console.

While not all of the details are known yet, over the past week there have been advance reports and much speculation about what the “PlayStation 4” will include.

Here are three things to look for at tonight’s event, which kicks off at 6 pm ET:

The new PlayStation is expected to stream games over the Web. Remember Sony’s acquisition of Gaikai Inc. last year? That $380 million spend wasn’t for nothing. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that Sony is indeed expected to offer cloud-based gaming components with the new console (in addition to playing good old-fashioned optical discs). There’s a chance that Sony will make older games available only through streaming if the discs aren’t forward compatible with the new console. But there could be new streaming content in there, as well.

This is notable mostly because it underscores the shift toward casual, Web- and mobile-based games that has been impacting the hard-core gaming industry. But cloud-based gaming can be technically difficult, as the story points out, so it will be interesting to see how Sony manages this.

Mobile, mobile, mobile. Even videogame consoles aren’t immune to the mobile craze. There are a couple of ways Sony could go here — and maybe it will do both — when it comes to mobile: More integration between the console and the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s not-exactly-best-selling handheld device, or with complimentary mobile apps that work with games on the PS4 console and network. This would allow for enhanced play both in the living room and, potentially, on the go, too, where consumers generally fire up their casual (free!) games.

Briefly consider, as an example, the Wii U from Nintendo, which recently had to cut its sales forecast for the new console, and might not have aimed right when it made a proprietary tablet-like controller. But take away “proprietary” and “controller” and you’ve got a tablet — which has proved it has a place in gaming.

Here we are now, entertain us. Most people who watch Web videos and movies on their TV sets don’t have “smart” TVs. In fact, most aren’t even using Apple TV or Roku. They’re using videogame consoles. And in that arena Sony faces formidable competition in Microsoft’s Xbox console, which in the past claimed the Most-Popular, Non-PC Video-Streaming Gadget superlative.

But here’s an interesting tidbit, reported by my colleague Peter Kafka late last year: Sony’s PS3 is Netflix’s biggest platform for connected-TV viewing, due in part to the fact that Sony doesn’t slap an additional subscription fee on Netflix-watching on the console. There’s a good chance that Sony will tout additional home streaming options or features as a way to bolster its brand as a multimedia platform — if not tonight, then in the near future.

AllThingsD will be at the event, bringing you up-to-date coverage, so check back here later this evening.

Longtime digital exec Jeff Berman is joining Hollywood production company BermanBraun as its first president.

Berman — who is no relation to BermanBraun co-founder Gail Berman — comes to the firm from the National Football League where he has been in charge of its Web, mobile, social and non-console gaming efforts. While there, he worked on several new initiatives, such as its multi-party video chat for Fantasy Football.

Several years before that, he was a top exec at social networking site Myspace, finally ending up as president of sales and marketing, where he was in charge of branded advertising, sales operations, entertainment, content and marketing. Efforts there by Berman included the now defunct Web-only series “Quarterlife,” which also had a very short life on a major network.

The Yale Law School grad was also on the board of Buddy Media, which was sold to Salesforce.com last year.

He’s an interesting person, then, for BermanBraun, which focuses on content across multiple screens, including big branded Web sites such as Wonderwall for Microsoft’s MSN and also more traditional entertainment shows. Its juicy-looking television series “Deception,” for example, is set to appear on NBC this week. It now has about 130 employees, mostly working at its Santa Monica, Calif., HQ.

“We needed an exceptional leader to manage the company,” said BermanBraun co-founder Lloyd Braun, who was once a top media exec at Yahoo. “And Jeff is someone who has skillsets in a whole bunch of areas and an emotional intelligence that is as important to what we do.”

Braun said Berman would initially focus on his area of expertise — digital — but that he would become more involved in the television and movie arenas over time.

BermanBraun — which considered raising funding last year — is at an interesting juncture in its development, trying to form a new kind of independent Hollywood media company that straddles analog and digital.

Berman said he was attracted to the opportunity there.

“I had a great job, since there is nothing bigger than the NFL,” he said in an interview yesterday. “But Lloyd and Gail have an incredible vision across platforms for entertainment.”

He added that content was just at the beginning of development online, but was finally poised to explode with the popularity of tablets, smartphones, interactive TV and other such devices, as well as social and e-commerce tools.

“The mind reels, there is so much that has happened and can happen,” said Berman. “I don’t know if there is a better time to be at such a place to create these new franchises — [BermanBraun] is a laboratory, where stuff is actually working.”

Like its famous character Super Mario in his latest game, Nintendo is trying to outrun its enemies. The Japanese videogame pioneer, coming off of its first annual loss in more than three decades, will start selling the Wii U in U.S. stores Sunday—its first home console in six years.

With the new machine, Nintendo is betting it can continue to push pricey hardware in a videogame market where most of the growth has been in software for smartphones and other mobile gadgets.

Green Throttle Games is coming out of stealth today with an idea for turning mobile devices into game consoles.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company was founded by Guitar Hero co-creator Charles Huang, along with Matt Crowley and Karl Townsend, who both have backgrounds in mobile.

“Mobile gaming is exploding, and new smart devices are becoming powerful alternatives to traditional consoles,” Huang said in a release. “We just need a simple and fun way for people to play games both on the go, and on the couch.”

Rather than buy a separate gaming device for the TV, like an Xbox or PlayStation, the company wants to enable gamers to play mobile games on the biggest screen in the house using their mobile phone or tablet. The Green Throttle Games gaming system allows a consumer to plug an Android phone or tablet into the TV using an adapter. An analog game controller connects wirelessly to the phone, allowing a person to play on the TV without any standalone hardware.

It’s similar to what some game companies have been trying to do with iPhones becoming the controller when connected to the TV via a cable.

Along with Green Throttle’s launch, the company is starting to pitch developers on making games for its system, ahead of the controller going on sale early next year. Developers can buy a kit today, including one of the company’s controllers, to start developing games. So far, it has signed up several developers, including nWay, Free Range Games, Mercenary and Monstrous. The company also will be developing games on its own. To start, Green Throttle will be compatible with Google Nexus 4, the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S II, S III and Galaxy Note, and the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

As an investor and board member of Zynga, Bing Gordon says Facebook feels a lot like a hardware game platform, but without the hardware advances to renew interest.

As social gaming on Facebook struggles to retain its luster, experts are searching for an explanation.

Long-time gaming executive Bing Gordon offers one plausible reason: Facebook is suffering from a cyclical process currently found in the games industry, with peaks and valleys driven by new hardware releases.

“The Facebook platform right now feels like it has a life cycle,” Gordon said. “Right now, it feels like PlayStation.”

About every six years, a new Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo comes out, driving new sales for the entire industry. At first, he says, there’s a feeding frenzy, but as the systems age, the frenzy slows down. Near the end, prices drop to keep the platform going.

While Facebook can’t relate to the hardware comparison, it still finds itself at a similar point, where its novelty factor is fading and the number of people playing games on its network is leveling off. The first to really notice this trend was Zynga, the largest game maker on the platform, which missed second-quarter expectations by a long shot. “Right now, it’s kind of flat, and whether it takes another jump up or goes down remains to be seen,” Gordon said. “Is there something else to be done? Sure, maybe it’s mobile.”

As an investment partner at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, Gordon is focused on consumer and gaming technologies; he has a good vantage point of the market from sitting on the boards of both Amazon and Zynga. Before joining Kleiner, he was a longtime executive at Electronic Arts. And since he’s dabbled in theater, including a stint on Broadway, he eagerly agreed to appear in a video (posted below).

Despite what some may consider a dire situation — Zynga and Facebook trading so far below their IPO prices — Gordon takes a longer view of the market. He remembers working at EA when its stock fell more than 70 percent in one week, and points to the way Amazon has recovered after once trading at $2 a share.

Gordon wouldn’t go into specifics on either company’s strategy, but before the camera started rolling, he chatted about Facebook’s ability to maintain its growth as a social games platform — and how it closely affects Zynga, the creator of some of the biggest social games, like FarmVille, CityVille and, more recently, ChefVille.

Gordon said that, thanks to Facebook, gaming is more social today than it has ever been, and he expects that trend to continue. But he does question whether the dominant access point will always be Facebook — or if it will eventually shift to mobile.

If that’s the case, can Zynga succeed somewhere other than Facebook?

“I think so, but it’s not provable,” he said. “Zynga has more talent than any company I’ve ever seen — way more talent than EA had at its peak.” But that, too, is changing. Over the past few months, Zynga has seen a half-dozen high-level departures. So, can that still be true? Gordon confidently and simply responded: “Oh, yeah.”

More from Gordon in the video:

While Fils-Aime did not provide any hints, at this point everyone is waiting to hear two crucial details: When the Wii U will go on sale and how much it will cost.

The Wii U was first unveiled more than a year ago at E3, where Nintendo surprised the industry with the first tablet-size controller for a videogame console. The hardware also represents a nice upgrade from the current generation because it supports HD graphics and hardcore game play. It will be connected online to offer new social experiences, including video chat.

However, Nintendo is increasingly going head to head with a whole range of consumer electronics companies as other devices, from phones to MP3 players and tablets, are being used for gaming. Today, Apple claimed the iPod touch was the most popular portable game-playing device (presumably over the Nintendo DS portable game systems), and last week, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos said he was shocked by how many Kindle games they were selling.

The Wii U will emerge in a gaming landscape filled with uncertainties: Will a new device revive the struggling console gaming market? Will consumers continue to shift their gaming habits toward more personal devices, like phones and tablets?

Price will definitely be a deciding factor for some as they weigh the difference between buying a tablet over a console that comes with a GamePad that isn’t designed to leave the house — much less the living room.

For now, no one is ruling the company out. Nintendo has disrupted the industry before with the introduction of motion-controlled gaming, and there’s always a chance it can do it again.

In five years, 39 percent of console game revenue will come from online distribution and purchases, according to a new report.

Internet-enabled devices such as phones, tablets and computers are making it insanely easy for consumers to discover and play new videogames.

And it’s that kind of online connectivity that is expected to drive the next wave of growth on the consoles.

In a new report, market research firm DFC Intelligence said it believes console sales will regain some momentum in 2014 and 2015 as new systems from Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony hit the market.

As a result, DFC is estimating that by 2017, 39 percent of console game revenue will be via online distribution and online revenue sources.

Nintendo is the first of the hardware makers to announce plans for its next console, which is expected to hit this holiday season. The Wii U will come with features encouraging consumers to connect online, including video chat and Miiverse, a social network where avatars walk around a virtual plaza. With Miiverse, game players will be able to post their thoughts in speech bubbles that appear over their heads with text or drawings — sort of like a status update on Twitter or Facebook.

With existing consoles, players often have the option of downloading new content for games, but typically the original game was purchased on a disk and didn’t require an Internet connection. Sony and Microsoft have not yet announced their plans, but both are expected to eventually release new hardware that will be more connected to the Internet than ever before.

Other companies — like Amazon, Valve’s Steam and Electronic Arts — are also in various stages of offering digital distribution channels.

Despite reports of a soft console market over the past year, DFC is still forecasting the industry to grow over the next five years to $82 billion in 2017 from $67 billion in 2012.

In addition to new consoles fueling some of this growth, the research firm said, the increase is thanks to PC and mobile gaming. Worldwide revenue from online games will reach $35 billion in 2017, up 84 percent from 2011, and PC game revenue is expected to pass $25 billion in 2017, up from about $20 billion in 2012.

A new, Yves Behar-designed video game console launches on Kickstarter today.

The creator of a new video game console is looking to change the way both players and developers interact with games on the TV — provided there’s room for another console on the market.

Created by game industry vet Julie Uhrman and designed by Yves Behar, the Ouya is an open-sourced console running its own user interface and game store on top of an Android OS. It’s built with a Tegra3 chipset for HD game play, and comes with a compatible, Ouya-branded controller.

Boxer8, the name of Uhrman’s start-up company, is launching a fundraising campaign today on crowdfunding site Kickstarter. The Ouya expected to cost $99.

Unlike traditional game consoles, the Ouya won’t have an optical drive. It will be built with one gigabyte of RAM, 8GB of flash storage and an HDMI port for connecting directly to the TV, in addition to both wireless and Bluetooth connectivity. The controller is designed with two standard analog sticks, eight game-play buttons and a touchpad.

Uhrman’s end goal is to develop a system that not only provides easy access to games and uninterrupted connectivity for players, but is also an open platform for developers and hackers. Any publisher can develop a game through the console’s built-in software development kit, and developers choose the pricing model, as long as the initial download is free. Hacking the device won’t result in a voided warranty.

So game players will have access to online games, Android apps and games created specifically for Ouya, all as part of a free-to-play model, says Urhman, the former head of digital distribution at IGN. When asked about specific titles — for example, whether there will be titles to sate the appetites of hardcore gamers — Urhman said it was too early to discuss partnerships with publishers, given that the start-up is still in the fundraising stage.

You might think: Do we need another console? Some analysts have been predicting the slow phase-out of the game console for a while now, as more games shift to the cloud and become available online and on mobile devices. Services like OnLive, which allows consumers to stream games to their TV, or to a PC or Mac, have spurred further discussion about the demise of the console.

And this year at E3, electronics giant Samsung announced plans to build an online gaming service, powered by Gaikai and Nvidia, directly into its “smart” Internet-connected TVs.

On the flip side of that, many Internet-connected TVs don’t yet have the chipsets needed to smoothly run graphics-heavy games. As more games migrate to the cloud, gamers used to the processing power of a console may find themselves waiting for technology to catch up.

Ouya, in the meantime, is hoping to position itself as the go-to device for online gaming.

“Ultimately, we believe that the console is going to go away,” Uhrman said in an interview. “We think it’s all going to the TV. That’s why our focus is also on the platform and the controller, which, for the most part, has been an afterthought.”

Boxer8 is looking to raise $950,000 on Kickstarter to produce the initial batch of Ouyas. Current investors include former Digg CEO Jay Adelson, and Hosain Rahman, the founder of Jawbone.

Update: In just eight hours and with 29 days left to go in its campaign, the Ouya has surpassed its fund-raising goal of $950,000, with more than eight thousand backers throwing money behind the new game console.

While there were fewer new game introductions in May, they collectively generated more sales than they did a year ago, according to NPD.

Over the past two years, publishers have focused on making fewer, bigger — and, in theory — better game franchises.

One example is Electronic Arts, which has eliminated 42 game franchises over the past two years, to focus on 25 of its best titles. Now there’s at least one data point that says the industrywide practice is starting to pay off.

In May, there were 27 percent fewer new game introductions, but the new console, portable and PC titles that did launch generated 188 percent more unit sales than they did a year ago, and 31 percent more dollars, according to NPD’s monthly game report.

“So, while there were fewer new item introductions this May, they collectively generated more unit and dollar sales,” said Anita Frazier, NPD Group’s videogame industry analyst.

One thing that helped drive positive results in May was the huge success of Activision Blizzard’s Diablo III for the PC.

NPD’s monthly game report primarily tracks new sales of hardware, software and accessories that occur at retail — in other words, it does not take into account game sales that happen electronically. Frazier estimates that the physical retail channel now only represents 50 percent to 60 percent of the total consumer spend on games.

But Frazier estimates that in May consumers also spent $155 million on used games and rentals, and $420 million on digital sales, including subscriptions, mobile apps, social games and downloadable content.

In all, she estimates that consumers spent $1.17 billion on both physical and digital games in May.

Can it pull off something that is a cross between Mario and a machine gun?

With the launch of the next-generation videogame console this holiday season, Nintendo will try to go beyond its family-friendly base of users to a more hardcore demographic.

But in many ways, the two cultures don’t jibe: One likes Mario and Luigi, the other thrives on machine guns and grenade launchers.

In an interview with AllThingsD, Nintendo President Saturo Iwata provided a glimpse of how he plans to balance the two — something he said he considers key to the Wii U’s success.

While there will be a steep learning curve when it comes to marketing to the two demographics, there’s some very basic logistical issues, too. For starters, Iwata said, Nintendo will have to be vigilant when it comes to monitoring and filtering content that is posted to its online gaming community, dubbed Miiverse.

Additionally, he said, while all third-party software developers will be free to create whatever games they want to, Nintendo has no plans to change its well-known and beloved style of game play. In other words, this means making first-party titles like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda or Wii Sports, which officially carry the “everyone” videogame rating.

“Even Zelda is going to be introduced to the Wii U system,” Iwata said. “I just can’t imagine in the game that someone’s head is going to be shot.”

Tricia Duryee, AllThingsD

Maybe not in Zelda, but you see it in plenty of other games, including Zombi U, an Ubisoft title coming exclusively to the Wii U. (See photo on the right!)

“Of course, legally we have to abide by the rules and regulations, but at the same time, even after doing so — even if one out of 100 is going to behave badly — that person alone can destroy the entire community,” Iwata said through a translator.

That means closely monitoring activity in the Miiverse, where avatars walk around a virtual “plaza.” Game players will be able to post their thoughts in “speech bubbles” that appear over their heads with text or drawings — sort of like a status update on Twitter or Facebook.

Iwata said those messages won’t appear in real time, so the service will have time to “filter” out any inappropriate content. ”We know that we have to be prepared to spend a sufficient amount of money and human resources to establish the system to try to eliminate those kind of bad behaviors,” he said.

The situation becomes more complicated in real-time environments, where players chat with one another using a microphone or Web cam.

With Xbox and PlayStation, the chat channels are often inundated with trash-talking and swear words among players who are competing in multiplayer mode.

Iwata has said he envisions a community on the Wii U which encourages empathy for other players.

In a follow-up interview, Scott Moffitt, Nintendo’s EVP of Sales and Marketing, said that there’s mature-rated content on the Wii today, so the Wii U will be no different.

“It is up to the family member to set the parental controls in their household,” he said, adding that each console will be able to support up to 12 password-protected accounts.

Moffitt also said that users will only be able to chat with people they are already friends with; he declined to provide specifics on how those introductions would first be made.

Want to see how Nintendo Wii U works? Here's a look from E3.

By now, we’ve heard a lot about the Wii U, Nintendo’s upcoming successor to the best-selling Wii gaming console. The Japanese game company still hasn’t confirmed exactly when the Wii U will hit the market, but this week at E3 other details have been revealed, such as the name of the controller (GamePad), the social network behind the Wii system (MiiVerse) and a spate of software titles.

So we decided to go hands-on with some Wii U games, with AllThingsD’s Tricia Duryee challenging MarketWatch’s Dan Gallagher to a game of Nintendo Land: Animal Crossing. Fun and games ensue — and see why Dan calls the Wii U GamePad “tricky.”

We know it's coming "this holiday" -- but consumers are still in the dark on an exact date.

Today at the E3 video game conference, Nintendo showed off a spate of software titles for its upcoming Wii U gaming system, but declined to reveal the exact launch date of the highly anticipated successor to the best-selling Wii console.

Nintendo listed 23 titles that will launch alongside the Wii U, including Super Mario Bros. U, Pimkin 3, Batman Arkham City, Zombi U, Rabbids Lands and more. Another title, NintendoLand, offers mini-games like Donkey Kong within the game.

Nintendo President of America Reggie Fils-Aime said NintendoLand would become available when the Wii U launches — “this holiday season.”

But aside from that, the game maker kept mum on details regarding launch date and price, to the disappointment of some E3 attendees.

The Japanese gaming company first announced the Wii U at last year’s E3, with more details about the device trickling out in recent months.

Just a couple days ago, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata appeared in a video and revealed that the tablet-like game controller for the game system is officially called the GamePad. He also announced plans for a Web-based social network, Miiverse, which won’t link to other social networks like Facebook or Twitter.

Fils-Aime did reveal today that the Wii U will work with up to two GamePads. Traditional Wii controllers, as well as Nintendo’s new secondary Pro Controller, will also work with the Wii U for multiplayer game play.

The GamePad has a 6.2-inch touchscreen display and a forward-facing camera, and in addition to acting as a controller for the Wii U gaming system, it offers standalone games, video chatting and Internet browsing.

It now also has near field communication (NFC), which allows for the wireless sharing of data between devices.

Nintendo faces formidable competition from other console makers like Microsoft and Sony, both of which have introduced motion-sensor and gesture control technology to their newer gaming consoles in the past year and a half. Microsoft in particular has built up the library of media and entertainment apps available on Xbox 360 to draw consumers who aren’t necessarily hardcore gamers — an audience that Nintendo had previously been successful in wooing.

Nintendo reported that it sold 4.5 million Wii units in 2011, having gotten a boost during the holiday season. Last year, the game maker dropped the price of the six-year-old console to $150 from $200.

In the video posted Sunday, Iwata said the Wii U system was a much more friendly environment compared to the war-torn, trash-talking environments found on Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation 3.

Pretty much the only two things left to say about the Wii U is when it will be launching and how much it will cost, but stay tuned for any last minute surprises from Nintendo's E3 press conference.

At this point, pretty much the only two things left to say about Nintendo’s Wii U are when it will be launching and how much it will cost.

The Japanese game company first unveiled the Wii U a year ago, and two days ago, it hosted a video briefing, where it unveiled a lot more information, including details of the 6.2 inch touchscreen it is calling the GamePad.

On Sunday, Nintendo said the GamePad will come with near field communication and infrared to control TVs and set-top boxes. It also announced a secondary remote, called the Pro Controller, which is similar to ones used by Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation.

In addition to hardware, Nintendo provided an overview of some of its online services for the new console, including Miiverse, a social network that will be accessible from any Web-enabled device.

Nintendo’s press conference at E3 kicks off this morning at 9 am PT in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Follow the live updates here to see if there are any surprises:

9:00 am: Pretty much everyone has taken their seat in what is a very packed crowd at Nokia Theatre.

And, looks like we are about to begin. The music has stopped and we are watching a video with Nintendo’s star game creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Miyamoto takes the stage to huge applause, and brings out his translator with a blow of a whistle.

Through his translator, he says for more than 30 years, game machines have had to connect to the TV. They could never take a more important role than the TV.

“We decided that the next system would have its own dedicated screen,” he said.

With the Wii U, the independent screen changes the importance of the gaming system. With this in your hands, you can quickly turn on a game.

As we were developing the new system, I wanted to develop the newest Pikmin game for the platform, he says.

They are showing off Pikmin 3, which features very cute and adorable “pikmins,” which look like little ants.

The little characters are challenged to collect as much fruit as they can, including oranges and apples and strawberries, which they must carry on their backs. The Wii U GamePad gives players an overhead view of the game play as the little characters scurry over the map collecting the items.

9:10 am: Nintendo’s President of North America Reggie Fils-Aime comes on stage to say that today’s press conference will be showing off 23 new titles for the Wii U.

That’s a lot of titles for an hour-long event.

He says: “That’s less time to consider what Wii U means to gamers and non-gamers and how it can change your life.

At its core, Wii U does three things: changes your gaming, how you interact with your gaming friends and changes the way you enjoy your TV.

“It’s not intuitive, but it stands to revolutionize your living room.”

9:14 am: Sounds like we won’t be hearing today about how the Wii U will be used as an entertainment device in the living room, like the Xbox 360.

But Fils-Aime said that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming. That means Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, YouTube, yes, yes, yes, he said.

“There’s no way we could explain it all this week, so at E3 we are focusing on the new way of gaming, and then in the future, we’ll show you how it will integrate and elevate your living room entertainment.”

Quickly, he clears something up: The Wii U will now support two GamePads simultaneously in addition to being backwards compatible with remotes from the original Wii.

While that may sound like a minor detail, it means fewer fights among kids in the living room to see who gets to play with the GamePad next.

9:17 am: The Nintendo president is now drilling down on the Miiverse, the Wii U’s social network.

He said to think of it as Main Street, where you can see and interact with your friends, who can communicate to you with “speech bubbles,” appearing over their pictures — sort of like text messages.

Players will also be able to show recent scores or screenshots from the games they are playing.

The social network will eventually be browser based, so it will be accessible on any Web-enabled device.

9:20 am: With Miiverse, you’ll be able to connect with friends inside the new Super Mario Bros. U game.

The game is obviously the best known franchise for Nintendo; to launch the Wii U without it would be a seriously bad idea.

In the demo, Mario and his friends scroll from left to right like the traditional games, interacting with coins and turtle shells.

9:23 am: Nintendo is now getting ready to mention all the new third-party games coming to the console, which will be one of the keys to a successful launch.

Nintendo is starting off with something a little more “hardcore,” like Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition.

Unlike other press conferences yesterday at E3, where the developers take the stage to play the demos live, we have not seen any live demonstrations. Instead, there have been pre-recorded videos.

While the graphics appear impressive and the gaming experience looks intuitive on the GamePad, you wonder what it will really look like when everything ships.

Next up, from Warner Bros. Games, will be “ScribbleNauts Unlimited,” a family-friendly cartoonish title. In the game, players get to draw and create silly characters, like a dog on wheels. The illustrations are created on the GamePad, and then imported into the game.

9:31 am: Here’s a montage of more games that are on the way. In other words, more video and less action. The list includes lots of titles but is limited here by my ability to type fast enough: EA’s Mass Effect 3, Tank! Tank! Tank! and other games from Namco; Trine 2; and Aliens Colonial Marines.

And, in case you were worried about your waistline with all these games coming out at E3, Nintendo’s got a solution for that, too!

It says that 43 million copies of Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus have been sold to date.

It will also allow you to use the balance board with the new Wii U, or continue to do exercises from the GamePad when the TV is being used for other purposes.

“And, now Wii Fit U adds another valuable accessory,” he said. “It will leave you happier and sweatier.”

9:37 am: Next, a workout for your vocal cords. Nintendo’s “Sing” is a karaoke game, where the lyrics are displayed on the GamePad.

9:39 am: Nintendo’s head of marketing, Scott Moffit, comes onstage to spend a few minutes on Nintendo 3DS, but for more updates, he’ll be hosting a Webcast tomorrow at 6 pm PT at www.e3.nintendo.com.

He says a number of first-party titles for the handheld gaming unit are coming, including Super Mario Bros. 2, which is different than the one they showed off earlier, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Paper Mario is coming this holiday season.

“What 3DS doesn’t have enough of yet is Mario’s little brother Luigi,” Moffit says.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon will haunt you in 3D this holiday season.

9:45 am: Reggie’s back to talk about Lego City: Undercover!

We’re taking a look: Funny stuff. Lego men are scaling buildings, tearing up building blocks with jack hammers and fighting evil. But it also is only video, so it’s more of a trailer than live action. There will also be a 3-D version for the 3DS.

“Our goal is to provide new and engrossing kinds of game experiences from hardcore to the newest of the newbies,” Reggie said, introducing Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft to the stage, whose company has said it has at least eight titles cooking for the platform.

9:52 am: Finally a live demo!

Ubisoft’s Just Dance 4 has four dancers on the stage to dance as Reggie decides from the GamePad which moves the dancers will perform next.

Next up, an original hardcore title from Ubisoft called Zombi U.

Yesterday, I described this as Plants Vs. Zombies meets AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” As the zombies approach from behind, the player must run — you can die from just one bite! This really is a hardcore game.

But at the end of the clip, for fun, Reggie takes a picture of his face and, using augmented reality, turns into a zombie.

9:57 am: Reggie’s back onstage after a short intermission to set up some props on the stage.

“Welcome to Nintendo Land,” Reggie said. The game is similar to Wii Sports for the original Wii and will be used to teach players how to use the new Wii U.

This makes a whole lot of sense, given that the GamePad may be daunting to some players, who will find it confusing to flip between the TV screen and the touchscreen in their hands.

Nintendo Land will have five mini-games: Donkey Kong’s crash course, Luigi’s Mansion and Ninja Castle, among other titles.

The game is a theme park, where you can play with friends or family, or competitively by yourself. What’s making this a reality is Miiverse, which they’ll talk about more later today in a developer’s roundtable.

A quick comment on that: If it takes multiple hours over several days at E3 to explain the Wii U, how much time will consumers take to understand it?

It will be vitally important for Nintendo Land to play this role and get across how much fun the system is very quickly.

10:05 am: We are more than an hour into this press conference and we still haven’t heard the two things people want to know: How much will the Wii U cost and when will it be available?

Ok, this has got to be the moment. Reggie is back onstage.

He’s saying Nintendo Land will launch at the same time as the Wii U this holiday.

But when???

The press here at Nokia Theatre will be able to play Nintendo Land, Zombi U and try out the Nintendo Wii fit features.

Reggie says, “If you imagine Wii U as a Wii Universe, then the touchscreen is the portal that transports you. Families in the same room, today distracted by their individual devices, will soon be enjoying time together. And friends online will feel more together. In a world with more obligations and less time, the promise: Together, Better.”

Okay, folks, that’s it for Nintendo (well, not counting the three other Web cast events they have lined up for developers for the rest of E3).

I guess with Nintendo, anything is possible.

No pricing. No availability.

Sony shows off new games and new ways to play.

Along with the Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation 3 is one of the oldest consoles on the market. But without any signs of a possible successor, will we see new hardware at this year’s E3 gaming conference?

That’s what everyone will be looking for at tonight’s Sony press event, which kicks off at 6 pm PT, along with new software titles for both PlayStation and the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s handheld gaming device.

If the Sony press conference mirrors today’s earlier announcements from Microsoft Xbox and Electronic Arts, we’ll likely see sequels of established software franchises as well as a focus on interconnectivity between devices — the console, the TV, your tablet and your phone.

We’ll also have our eye on SOEmote, Sony’s new facial animation technology for EverQuest II, to see how that works.

6:06 pm: Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, is kicking off the event.

It’s a packed house here at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

6:08 pm: Tretton says Sony is broadcasting the event tonight in four different languages.

Kaz Hirai — Sony’s new CEO — is here, too.

6:13 pm: Sony starts off with a brand-new game title: Beyond Two Souls, which features a protagonist named Jodie Holmes.

Jodie Holmes is the strong, silent type, or so it seems from this game clip we’re seeing. She’s being interrogated by someone, not saying a word. But this girl can make objects fly through the air.

She’s the antithesis of the Lara Croft look, with cropped hair, a flannel shirt and dog tags.

6:18 pm: Now a reference to Sony’s viral “Michael” ad from last year.

The team behind PlayStation’s All-Stars: Battle Royale takes the stage.

All-Stars will now be available for the PlayStation Vita, and will be compatible with PlayStation 3. In other words: More cross-play on multiple devices.

6:23 pm: Now the All-Stars: Battle Royal team is demonstrating cross-play.

The clown character in this game is enough to keep a small child up at night.

And Fat Princess — that’s the character’s name — wins this round. Handshakes among the team; a smattering of applause.

6:27 pm: As AllThingsD’s Tricia Duryee predicted earlier, we’re seeing more cross-platform playing options.

Later this year, Sony will introduce a cross-controller that allows players to play and share games using the PS3 and PS Vita together, Tretton says.

Eighty percent of PS3s and PS Vitas are connected to the Internet now, Tretton says, with 1,500 downloadable titles available.

6:31 pm: Tretton says games like Journey, Papo & Yo and Unfinished Swan will now be available for download on the PlayStation Network, just a few of more than 200 digital downloadable titles that will come to the PlayStation Network this month.

Plus, freebies: Infamous 2, Saints Row 2 and Little Big Planet 2.

It’s not a new strategy, throwing in free software to drive hardware sales, but the crowd seems to like the idea.

6:32 pm: Long live the freebie: E3 attendees will also get PlayStation Plus access for free for a year.

6:35 pm: Turning now to focus on the video offerings in the PlayStation store, like Amazon’s video service, Hulu Plus and NHL Game Center.

Last week, YouTube came to Vita; Tretton says Hulu and Crackle Television are coming to Vita soon, too.

(How many Vita units have sold, Jack? We’re waiting …)

6:41 pm: They are now showing off Assassin’s Creed III for PS Vita, with a female leading role! (i.e., no more uncomfortable sex scenes for female players).

The beginning of the game takes place at sea with a boat getting rocked by the waves. No pirates so far, but it looks like there should be some.

6:44 pm: Far Cry 3 is up now, another Ubisoft title. An insane cast of characters hits a remote island.

The differentiating playing feature of this game is four-player co-op, so there’s four people up on stage — one female — showing us how it is done. The players are all in verbal contact with each other as they come under heavy fire.

Go, go, go!

High fives all around!

By the way, this is Tricia Duryee taking over from Lauren Goode, who is experiencing technical difficulties. I swear, E3 requires multiple laptops and Wi-Fi connections to make reporting it possible.

6:49 pm: Next is an update on Sony’s Move, the motion-controlled device for the PS3.

I would love to have some new numbers on Move shipments, too, as it doesn’t seem to be doing as well as Microsoft’s Kinect. You have to have a lot of compelling software titles to get people excited about buying an accessory.

To that end, Sony is showing off some new Move content.

It’s something called “Wonderbook,” which appears to be a way to make a children’s pop-up book digital. There will be educational content.

Moonbot Studios is one of the first to be working on a “game” or “book” called Diggs Nightcrawler. Moonbot is mostly known for its e-books for children, so this is bringing new kinds of content to the PS3.

The first title will be called “Book of Spells,” authored by J.K. Rowling, better known as the author of “Harry Potter.”

6:56 pm: “Welcome to the reinvention of the book. … Open the Book of Spells to enjoy new writing by J.K. Rowling.”

The Book of Spells is no ordinary book, sort of like the paintings that come to life in the Harry Potter series.

Words pop up out of the book, dragons flap their wings and fly off the page with the wave a wand. Very cool!

Handing back to Lauren Goode, who is back online.

7:00 pm: Thanks Tricia!

The book in this game also becomes a digital pop-up book.

And a game controller turns into a spell-casting wand.

All the, um, kids who voraciously read “Harry Potter” will fully appreciate the possibilities of this game.

The Book of Spells from J.K. Rowling is the first of many books that will be available for the Wonderbook library, Sony says.

7:04 pm: In case you haven’t heard: Mobile gaming is giving traditional gaming a run for its money.

So Sony is now touting its PlayStation-certified mobile games.

HTC will be Sony’s first hardware partner for PlayStation mobile games.

7:06 pm: PlayStation Suite is now going to be called PlayStation Mobile, natch.

7:10 pm: This game clip we’re watching now is showing a fierce battle on a dock with some eel-like creature slithering around in the water. There are spears! Chains! Great balls of fire!

It’s God of War Ascension, which comes out March 12, 2013.

7:20 pm: We’re watching a trailer now of the new Uncharted game featuring Nathan Drake.

Update: This game is actually titled The Last of Us…not Uncharted. I shouldn’t have assumed this heart-throbbish guy was Drake!

7:22 pm: Lots of gun-firing, head-bashing and explicit cursing in this game. Not kid-friendly, for sure.

And the head-bashing just went to a whole new level.

This is the third game we’ve seen today showing people shot directly in the face.

(I think I’ll go back to Draw Something now …)

7:25 pm: Wow. So Sony’s concluding this portion of the event with the gunshot to the face clip?

Jack Tretton wraps it up and the crowd starts to file out of the arena.

As expected, no new console from Sony this year, but we did see a new cross-platform game controller, a partnership with HTC for mobile games, new IP (Beyond Two Souls) and more titles to boost PS Vita and Move, including the super-cool Wonderbook demo.

But will this be enough to drive more sales of PlayStation 3 as it enters its seventh year on the market?

Only time will tell. We’re out for now, but stay tuned to AllThingsD for continuing coverage, including Nintendo’s press conference at 9 am PT tomorrow!

How will Microsoft breathe new life into a seven-year-old console?

In just a few minutes, Microsoft will take the stage at this week’s E3 videogame conference in downtown Los Angeles.

The software maker first introduced its Xbox 360 gaming console seven years ago, and it hasn’t been refreshed since — the longest console cycle for any company in the videogame industry. Still, it’s not really expected that we’ll see brand new hardware at today’s event.

What we will be keeping an eye on: More news surrounding upcoming software titles, including Forza Horizon, the highly-anticipated Halo 4 game. Also expect to see some key software partners taking the stage alongside Microsoft.

And in recent months, Microsoft has been expanding its media and entertainment offerings through the console, with recent data showing more people are watching Web stuff on Microsoft’s machine than on the iPad, iPhone or any Android machine, anywhere. Also, Xbox Live users are now watching more movies and TV and listening to music than gamers are using it to play online games.

Will Microsoft dare to stray from the traditional gaming talk to introduce more media apps for Xbox?

We’ll find out shortly.

9:20 am: People are still climbing into their seats at USC’s Galen Center, where my AllThingsD colleague Tricia Duryee and I will be providing live updates. It’s a nearly full house.

For all the gaming fans unable to make the show in person, here’s a shot of the entrance to the event.

Because we haven’t heard enough of Gotye lately, “Somebody That I Used to Know” is now playing overhead.

9:30 am: And we begin! Microsoft kicks off the event with a dramatic starship/military/world domination montage.

9:32 am: It’s Halo 4. Cheers from the crowd.

I missed the memo about bringing earplugs. We’re still in the middle of an intense, electrifying game of Halo 4, being played out on the big screen.

The Galen Center is dark, with smartphone screens dotting the crowd.

Halo 4, for those who don’t know, drops on November 6 of this year.

9:38 am: Microsoft’s Xbox Director Don Mattrick takes the stage, saying Xbox is now the number-one-selling console worldwide.

9:41 am: And now, another videogame montage. More combat scenes, brutal killings.

It’s Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell Blacklist, which was leaked ahead of this event.

Blacklist features single-player co-op and spies vs. mercs. It ships spring of 2013. Expect to see more at the Ubisoft event later today.

9:47 am: Now Andrew Wilson from EA Sports takes the stage. He’s talking about FIFA 13. (There are 13 of them?)

FIFA 13 will utilize voice recognition technology and will be available around the world this coming fall.

9:49 am: Joe Montana is here — promoting Madden 13.

Madden NFL 13 will also use voice commands. Montana says he’s excited to give the game a go, as it makes him feel like he’s “back on the field again.”

He starts using the voice command feature on stage. It’s kind of fun to see Joe Montana calling plays to a console.

Fittingly, he’s calling a 49ers game. Wonder what he thinks about Alex Smith’s performance (on Madden NFL 13, of course).

The game hits stores on August 28th.

9:52 am: Mythical creatures and impossibly realistic computer-generated humans appear in this next little montage.

Then head of Microsoft Studios, Phil Spencer, walks out.

9:54 am: He teases Forza! But first, a trailer to the Gears of War saga.

9:55 am: Now Forza. Forget Nuremberg: This Forza game is set on the open road.

Fancy sports cars are veering off the road, hitting trees, speeding off.

Forza Horizon hits the market on October 23.

9:57 am: Now we hear from Yusuf Mehdi, senior VP of Microsoft’s Online Audience Business Group. We’re seeing more Xbox voice command functions, with a focus on the media apps from Hulu, Netflix, etc.

He’s speaking in Spanish to Xbox, calling up foreign-language apps, showing how the Xbox can be used for entertainment around the world.

Paramount movies, Nickelodeon, Machinima and Univision are new content partners. Machinima gets the loudest applause — not surprisingly. This is a gaming crowd.

Now, on to sports.

The NBA is coming to Xbox, Mehdi says. NBA League Pass will give access to hundreds of games.

NHL Game Center Live is coming to Xbox, too.

ESPN on Xbox is about to get even better, he continues. Xbox already carries some ESPN content, but now: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU. Mehdi mentions that SportsCenter, Mike & Mike, all live and all in HD, are coming to Xbox 360.

Other set-top boxes, like Roku, already have deals for MLB content, as well as NBA League Pass and NHL Game Center live, by the way. And in almost all cases, consumers still have to pay for those packages or monthly access passes.

But the ESPN deal is notable. What’s still unclear is what the payment structure will be for this cable content. (AllThingsD’s Tricia Duryee has more on this in her write-up here.)

10:03 am: A video montage shows high-fiving bros on couches watching this awesome sports content via Xbox.

10:04 am: Now, a new streaming music service: Xbox Music, available on the console, tablets and phones.

Last fall, it was reported that Microsoft’s earlier music device and service, Zune, was finally, officially dead. Let’s see if the new service sticks.

10:06 am: Here’s Stefan Olander, Vice President of Digital Sport at Nike. He’s the Viking-looking guy who’s been promoting the Nike+ FuelBand in recent months.

He’s walking through Nike+ Kinect training, showing how the Kinect sensor will recognize your fitness movements while the new program calculates your movements and your NikeFuel score. NikeFuel, for those who don’t know, is Nike’s new currency for energy exerted during a work out.

Marc Whitten, head of Xbox Live, comes out after the Nike+ Kinect video.

So far, this event is heavy on teases, light on details.

10:12 am: He introduces Xbox SmartGlass, which sounds not unlike AirPlay. He can start a movie on his tablet (Windows 8, naturally) and pick it up where he left off on his TV at home.

The tablet becomes a device for contextual information about the movie, he says.

10:15 am: With Xbox SmartGlass, the tablet acts as a kind of enhancement controller for games as well. We’re seeing how a gamer can pause Halo 4, check his tablet for the specifications of the gun he’s using, then resume the game on the TV. (Update: The app will be available on iOS and Android as well as Windows mobile platforms.)

10:17 am: Internet Explorer is coming to Xbox this year.

He demonstrates how a movie can be watched through an IE Web page on TV, via the Xbox.

Now, we’re looking at an interactive auto Web page, via IE on Xbox.

The Xbox SmartGlass app on a tablet is controlling the Web page navigation.

Whitten emphasizes that SmartGlass works with the devices you already own: Xbox, TV, tablet, smartphone, etc. Unclear on which operating systems, though. (Update: SmartGlass will work on iOS and Android in addition to Windows mobile devices.)

10:22 am: Now two guys from Crystal Dynamics, creators of Tomb Raider, take the stage.

Lara Croft looking as fierce as ever in this clip.

10:27 am: Microsoft’s Phil Spencer is now back onstage.

Here come the world premiere exclusive titles, he says:

First, from Signal Studios, the creators of Toy Soldiers, the miniature army game that came out a couple years ago and will be featured in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview Store: Their new game is called Ascend New Gods.

Second, from Twisted Pixel, there’s a Kinect game from the director of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” called Matter.

10:32 am: Now, a preview of Resident Evil 6, the franchise even some hardcore gamers admit to being afraid of playing by themselves.

This one looks like a Michael Bay movie on steroids.

(With zombies.)

10:37 am: Now, a much tamer presentation of Wreckateer from Alex Ruiz.

Wreckateer’s coming to Xbox Live this summer, she says.

10:39 am: Next! A dramatic rendition of a South Park video game. Yes, really. Laughs.

The Stick of Truth comes out March 5. And now a surprise visit from Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

They immediately poke fun at the idea of the interconnected, multi-device game-player, asking, how many of you want to play a game that’s connected to your tablet that’s also connected to your oven while you’re sitting in the refrigerator?

But really: We wanted to create a game where people feel like they’re in South Park, they say.

10:43 am: And just as quickly as they entered, they’re off, joking about procrastinating on creating the game as they do everything else.

10:44 am: Next up, Dance Central 3. AllThingsD’s Tricia Duryee is getting excited next to me. I think she’s even dancing in her seat.

Whoa — and we’ve got Usher on stage, singing and showing off his moves. (You, too, can dance like Usher if you play Dance Central 3!)

10:48 am: Usher wraps, to applause.

Don Mattrick up again.

He makes a joke about “ushering in” entertainment.

Groans.

10:50 am: Now, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. All new content will launch first on Xbox 360.

One thing that sets this version of the popular first-person shooter game apart from its earlier software counterparts: This one is set in the future, around a 21st Century Cold War, while the others have focused on historical battles and wars.

Gamers can preorder it now, the game’s Web site says. Xbox 360 is already listed as a console partner on the game’s official Web site, alongside Sony’s PlayStation 3, and the game will be playable on PCs.

10:58 am: The future looks bleak in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, for the record.

The first-person shooter can also steer a floating, futuristic military sky-vehicle around the apocalyptic game stage.

11:05 am: That’s a wrap. Some main takeaways: As expected, we didn’t see new hardware, but that was about as likely as us seeing a new iPhone prototype at D10 last week.

We got more glimpses and details surrounding key software franchises like Halo 4 and Forza Horizon, as well as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Dance Central 3. Plus: The South Park game, which will likely generate some buzz. Will Cartman and the gang translate well to the gaming screen?

And the Nike+ Kinect integration might lure some Nintendo Wii users who have been using the console for fitness-related activities.

The most interesting announcement is probably SmartGlass, and how that will impact both the gaming and entertainment experience in the “connected home” — at least, those with Xboxes.

On to the next E3 event!

Microsoft is not saying when it will be unveiling a new Xbox console, but thanks to a lawsuit between Activision and some former employees, timing details are a little clearer.

Microsoft is not saying when it will be unveiling a new Xbox console, except to say that it won’t be at the E3 game conference next month.

Now there’s some additional information on timing, thanks to a lawsuit between Activision and some former employees.

According to confidential agreements unsealed in the court case, Microsoft’s next game console, which is referred to as the “Xbox 720,” could be released in time for the 2013 holiday season.

The Los Angeles Times originally posted the documents on Monday, but it was Brier Dudley of the Seattle Times who came up with the theory on the timing.

The lawsuit is a complicated tale, involving Activision’s insanely successful first-person shooter Call of Duty. Former Activision developers are claiming they are owed hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties and bonus payments. Activision is claiming breach of contract.

The documents, revealed last week, detail a high-profile deal between Bungie and Activision in 2010.

The 27-page agreement calls for Bungie to develop four “sci-fantasy, action shooter games,” code-named “Destiny,” released every other year, beginning in the fall of 2013, according to the Los Angeles Times. Additionally, Bungie agreed to put out four downloadable expansion packs code-named “Comet.”

Bungie is the developer behind the successful Halo franchise, but is not the developer behind Halo 4, which Microsoft is developing and releasing in November.

Here’s what Dudley is suggesting based on the contract language:

Microsoft hasn’t said when the next version of the Xbox will go on sale, but the Bungie contract suggests that it could happen in the 2013 holiday season, with “Destiny” as a key launch title. That would be similar to the way Halo was a cornerstone of the first Xbox launch in November 2001.

An Xbox spokesman declined to comment on this theory, and referred questions to Activision and Bungie.

The document also says the game is expected to be released for the PlayStation 3 successor in the fall of 2014.

The big caveat to all of this guesswork is that the document is now two years old, so timing could easily change. Additionally, the name “Xbox 720″ could just be a code name or placeholder. Of course, console makers keep the timing of their upcoming hardware close to their vests, so that consumers don’t hold off on making purchases.

In March, Microsoft’s Corporate Communications boss Frank Shaw told AllThingsD that consumers probably shouldn’t expect new hardware at the E3 game conference, or “anytime soon.”

“For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360,” he added.
