Analysts are giving a cautious stamp of approval after Cisco Systems reset its growth expectations for the next three years. They also seem to like how Cisco has picked a fight with Juniper.

Shares of Cisco Systems are moving up today as investors and analysts react to yesterday’s analyst meeting. During his presentation, CEO John Chambers admitted that prior to its restructuring, Cisco had had “an extra four to five inches around the waistline,” but is now much slimmer, having shed more than 12,000 jobs. He also made some aggressive comments about rival Juniper Networks, saying that company is “the most vulnerable I’ve ever seen them.”

Cisco also did what many analysts have been urging for some months and reduced its long-term growth targets to levels it has a better chance of meeting. It said it now expects revenue to grow annually at 5 to 7 percent through 2014 and called for operating margins in the 25 percent range, which is pretty much in line with what some analysts had suggested.

So were they convinced? A little. John Marchetti of Cowen and Co. called it “a positive analyst day.” The more aggressive stance versus competitors and the realistic targets should give the shares a “boost over the near term,” he wrote in a note to clients today. While Cisco’s valuation, which is at about nine times Marchetti’s forward EPS for the 2012 calendar year, is arguably low, he kept his rating at neutral. “Shares look cheap,” he said, “but we do not see a near-term catalyst to drive the stock higher and believe the muted growth outlook and macro-headwinds especially in light of Cisco’s exposure to government and European customers.”

Sanjiv Wadhwani of Stifel Nicolaus was more convinced. In a note to clients today he wrote that “the worst seems to be behind” Cisco following a product transition in its switching business that was responsible for at least part of its troubles over the last few quarters. Moreover, the pricing environment in switching — which had been driven down in part by an aggressive Hewlett-Packard campaign and profit margins on many of its switching products — are “approaching historical levels.” On top of that, he says Cisco has some moves it can make to trim some operational expense — he called them “opex levers” — to make sure that per-share earnings grow faster than sales. He rates Cisco shares a buy with a $20 price target.

Cisco sees Juniper as being “spread too thin” in the marketplace right now, Wadhwani writes. But Cisco’s line of attack won’t necessarily be lower prices. Indeed, the opposite may be true, he wrote: Cisco “will intensely focus on gross margins going forward.”

But that’s not to say there won’t be other weapons, like marketing trash talk. Here’s a sample: Cisco has launched a site where it accuses Juniper of “overpromising and under-delivering.” If there’s more to come like this — frankly, from both sides — the fight should be fun to watch.

Consumer spending on digital games, such as mobile, social and downloads, still falls short of more traditional formats, like PC and console games, but the gap is beginning to narrow.

Consumer spending on digital games, such as mobile, social and downloads, still falls short of more traditional formats, like PC and consoles, but the gap is beginning to narrow.

The NPD Group reports today that in the first quarter of the year, digital revenues totaled $1.85 billion, coming in just below traditional sales of $2 billion.

The estimates were released today ahead of its monthly report coming out on Thursday, which is expected to show another weak period for traditional physical sales due to a lull in big game releases and the less than stellar demand for Nintendo’s new 3DS handheld, according to MarketWatch.

Unlike the estimates released today, the Thursday report only accounts for sales made at retail for hardware, software, and accessories — and not the digital format content distribution, which is currently seeing the most growth.

Zynga’s IPO may be the biggest example of this trend.

The San Francisco company, known for such games as CityVille on Facebook and Words With Friends on mobile, reported revenues of $235.4 million in the first quarter of this year. None of those revenues would be accounted for in the traditional physical channel because they come primarily from microtransactions inside online games.

“While the new physical retail channel still generates the majority of industry sales, our expanded research coverage allows us to assess the total consumer spend across the growing number of ways to acquire and experience gaming, including mobile apps and downloadable content,” said Anita Frazier, an analyst at the NPD Group.

MarketWatch reports that two analysts expect more declines in June after sales slid 19 percent in May compared to the same month the previous year. Doug Creutz of Cowen & Co. wrote in a note to clients that he believes sales will decline 12 percent; Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities predicted a drop of six percent.

New game releases for June include Duke Nukem Forever from Take-Two Interactive, which received disappointing reviews.

After the telecom bubble burst a decade ago, fiber was a dirty word.

Now, the fiber-optic network business is enjoying a resurgence, particularly for metro fiber, the high-capacity lines that connect a city’s office buildings, data centers and cellular towers to the Internet.

There have been 14 acquisitions in the industry this year alone and 45 since the fiber market began its turnaround in 2006, according to investment bank Cowen & Co.

“There’s a shortage of metro fiber, and the demand is just going through the roof,” said Rob Shanahan, chief executive of Lightower Fiber Networks, a fiber company serving the Northeast that has acquired five other companies since 2008.

Palm’s long-suffering investors have apparently drunk themselves silly on Palm Pre Kool-Aid (here at ATD, we tasted it briefly and promptly spit it out). Shares of the much diminished handset maker climbed almost seven percent to $4.45 Thursday after the company uncrated the device and Web OS, the new platform it will run on. This morning, they climbed another 96 cents to $5.47.

Wall Street seems convinced that the Pre is not a postscript for Palm (PALM), but the beginnings of its rebirth. A historic turning point worthy of a trading bacchanal. Indeed, expressing a “renewed confidence in Palm’s prospects, Standard & Poor’s raised its target price on the company to $4.50 from $2.50. “Pre uses a new operating system that allows for the merging of multiple data sources,” Standard & Poor’s analyst Todd Rosenbluth said in a research note. “While the new system has been in long-term development, we believe it could help to bring consumer and carrier interest back to PALM’s devices, which have been losing market share.”

Matt Hoffman of Cowen & Co. agreed. “We believe WebOS will immediately be competitive with the industry’s most advanced mobile platforms, including Apple’s OS X and Google’s Android,” he wrote in a research note to investors.

Other analysts, while similarly optimistic, tempered their enthusiasm with hardcore market realities.

“Palm’s challenge will be to steal at least some of the thunder from the heavyweight contenders in the smartphone market,” said Charlie Wolf of Needham & Co. “In our opinion, the Pre clearly outshines Windows Mobile and Google’s Android platform in their current iterations. But whether it can gain breathing room in an increasingly crowded market remains an open question, especially in view of the prospect that stunning new operating systems and smartphones will also debut during the year.”

“Palm came out with guns blazing,” he told RCR Wireless. “They met or exceeded expectations. This gives the company a sense of momentum and a return to confidence. Of course, the bigger question is how the device is marketed. Will it launch on time? Will AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless get on board? Sprint alone isn’t enough to save the day. The profitability impact at this point is unknown.”
