<p>Okay, maybe not, but longtime tech entrepreneurs Josh Felser and Dave Samuel will announce a new early-stage VC firm called Freestyle Capital, with $27 million in new investment funds.</p>
<p>Felser and Samuel co-founded Crackle, which was acquired by Sony for $65 million in 2006; and Spinner.com, which was bought by what was then AOL Time Warner for $320 million in 1999. </p>
<p>The pair said the fund builds on 27 preexisting start-ups they had already made investments in.</p>
<p>Although Felser and Samuel are announcing Freestyle at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference today, they don&#8217;t run any tech news site for AOL &#8212; so all should be well.</p>

<p>SAN FRANCISCO &#8212; September 12, 2011 &#8211;</strong> Today, at TechCrunch Disrupt, the industry&#8217;s early-stage startup networking event, Internet technology veterans Josh Felser and Dave Samuel formally introduced Freestyle Capital, a new venture capital firm focused on seed and early stage investments in consumer and web-based enterprise technology startups. Felser and Samuel, serial Internet entrepreneurs who together co-founded both Crackle (acquired by Sony for $65 million in 2006) and Spinner.com (acquired by AOL Time Warner for $320 million in 1999), also announced that they have raised $27 million in a new fund closed from limited partners including Cendana Capital and Hall Capital. The new fund builds on a pre-existing portfolio assembled by Felser and Samuel.</p>
<p>Freestyle Capital will focus on providing early-stage startups with both funding and counsel &#8212; drawing upon the investment capabilities and real-world experiences of Felser and Samuel &#8212; to guide technology startups to the next stage of development. Freestyle Capital is looking for young companies with transformational business ideas presenting seed funding and early stage investment opportunities in the range of $100,000-$500,000.</p>
<p>To date, Freestyle has invested in more than 27 companies, including: GoInstant; Byliner; CrowdFlower; Get Satisfaction; Typekit; about.me (acquired by AOL); BackType (acquired by Twitter); and CoTweet (acquired by ExactTarget). </p>
<p>&#8220;Every time we make an investment decision, we draw upon our own deep entrepreneurial experience to unearth the critical success factors for each company &#8212; an approach fundamentally different from that of most VCs,&#8221; said Felser, co-founder of Freestyle Capital. &#8220;Immediately post-investment, we provide a hands-on approach that leverages the knowledge we&#8217;ve gained as successful startup CEOs in developing, marketing and leading web-based businesses. <p>A new Silicon Valley business incubator called <a href="http://thestartproject.com/">The Start Project</a> has recruited a high-profile group of entrepreneurs as advisers, which it announced today on its Web site.</p>
<p>Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg, former Google (GOOG) exec and angel investor Chris Sacca, as well as Whiskey Media&#8217;s Mike Tatum and Jeffries &#038; Co. Managing Director David Liu, have all agreed to help the company&#8217;s start-ups before and during their creation.</p>
<p>The Start Project is the brainchild of serial entrepreneurs Narendra Rocherolle of 83 Degrees, who co-founded a range of companies, and Josh Felser of Spinner and Crackle.</p>
<p>Polaris Venture Partners is also involved, lending office space in San Francisco and possible investments in whatever innovative ideas bubble up, with a first-look option.</p>
<p>&#8220;We can do a lot of stuff, such as pairing a CEO with an adviser with an amazing track record,&#8221; said Rocherolle in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;It&#8217;s kind of a Justice League for start-ups.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Start Project&#8217;s description of itself on its Web site reads:</p>
<p>&#8220;The start project is a collaborative effort to bring great ideas to market. While the founders have a history of successful exits (over half a billion dollars), they are now focused on the initial stages of business creation including: <strong>idea generation, software development, product vision, team building, and investment</strong>.&#8221;</p>

<p>For many years now, one of our regular attendees at the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference has been award-winning movie and television director, producer and writer Barry Sonnenfeld, who is&#8211;as it turns out&#8211;a not-so-closeted geek in his spare time.</p>

<p>In fact, the man behind movies like &#8220;Men in Black&#8221; and TV shows like &#8220;Pushing Daisies&#8221; (and who likes to sport a Stetson and cowboy boots 24/7) does a gadget review column for Esquire magazine called &#8220;The Digital Man.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now he is branching out to <a href="http://crackle.com/c/The_Esquire_Digital_Man">a vlog about his geek passions on Crackle</a>, which will appear every two weeks from wherever he is&#8211;either from his homes in East Hampton, N.Y. or Telluride, Colo., or from movie or TV sets.</p>
<p>And, compared to the cinéma vérité style of BoomTown (translation: shaky filming and bad sound), Sonnenfeld&#8217;s vlogs are pretty high quality, although they are not too overdone as those from Hollywood types always are, and it&#8217;s hard not to admire the editorial use of a martini.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s his intro video vlog below, as well as one about a cross-country trip Sonnenfeld and his &#8220;analog&#8221; dog, named Lucky, took in a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO (super high output) and another about his experience helping his wife, Sweetie, cook for some film industry friends using the Traeger Professional Wood Pellet Grill.</p>
<p>Next week: A chain saw, although I hope Sonnenfeld will go light on the martinis for that demo.</p>

Head over to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/">YouTube</a> and check out &#8220;Ghostbusters,&#8221; which is running at its full length on Google&#8217;s (GOOG) video site, and prominently displayed on its homepage.</p>
<p>YouTube says it&#8217;s highlighting the Bill Murray/Dan Akroyd/Sigourney Weaver classic because this summer is the movie&#8217;s 25th anniversary.</p>
<p>Which is true! But I&#8217;m pretty sure the site is also trying to remind both Hollywood studios and run-of-the-mill YouTube users that the site can and does run more than just short, home-brewed clips&#8211;it&#8217;s got a bunch of movies, TV shows, and other &#8220;premium content,&#8221; too.</p>
<p>Not nearly as much as Hulu, of course, but YouTube is still trying to figure out how to change that. One way is by simply <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090416/youtube-preps-its-hulu-answer-movies-tv-shows/">creating special sections to highlight movies and TV shows</a>, which is one of the reasons it got Sony&#8217;s (SNE) <a href="http://crackle.com/">Crackle</a> on board last spring. Another is to offer content owners special incentives to hand over their stuff to the world&#8217;s biggest video site.</p>
<p>If you do watch &#8220;Ghostbusters,&#8221; for instance, note that the traditional YouTube player has been replaced by one from Crackle. YouTube also recently agreed to let Disney&#8217;s <a href="http://espn.go.com/">ESPN.com</a> (ESPN) use its own player as well.</p>
<p>On the other hand, there&#8217;s still plenty of other &#8220;premium content&#8221; on YouTube that doesn&#8217;t appear to be sanctioned by the contents&#8217; owners and that doesn&#8217;t appear to be generating any revenue or other benefit for them, either. Like this grainy, but still excellent, &#8220;Ghostbusters&#8221; excerpt:</p>

<p>What&#8217;s not included: almost any first-run TV show or newly released movie. That&#8217;s the content that&#8217;s made Hulu successful and what&#8217;s also driven traffic to offerings from CBS and Disney&#8217;s ABC.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t accuse the Google guys of overselling this: In a press conference today, they described it as a &#8220;first step, a baby step.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google (GOOG) did say that it had added new content partners, but it was maddeningly imprecise about which ones it had signed up and what content they were providing. The company did confirm, however, that Sony (SNE), via its Crackle video site, would be providing content.</p>
<p>Google also said that it now has &#8220;thousands&#8221; of television shows and &#8220;hundreds&#8221; of movies; prior to this, the company said its catalog consisted of just &#8220;hundreds&#8221; of TV shows and &#8220;dozens&#8221; of movies.</p>
<p>But this is still primarily &#8220;long tail&#8221; stuff. The only first-run CBS (CBS) show YouTube offers, for instance, is <a href="http://www.cbs.com/primetime/harpers_island/">&#8220;Harper&#8217;s Island,&#8221;</a> which YouTube already offered. And if you recognize any of the following new YouTube partners, then it means you&#8217;re a show business insider: Endemol, Anime Network, Scott Entertainment, Entertainment Rights, Shout Factory, Telenext Media, Documentary Channel, First Look Studios, IndieFlix, Saavn, Snag Films, Venevision and Bandai.</p>
<p>Still, YouTube needs as much licensed content it can get its hands on in order to lure more advertisers to the site, which has underperformed to date.</p>
<p>Advertisers who do want to sign up will have a new option: a &#8220;Google TV ads&#8221; product that inserts ads into the shows, &agrave; la Google&#8217;s Adsense for Web publishers. Google said it will use &#8220;pre-roll,&#8221; &#8220;mid-roll&#8221; and &#8220;post-roll&#8221; ads&#8211;i.e., video ads that run before, during and after the movie or TV show&#8211;as well as the overlay ads that cover the bottom part of the screen, briefly, with a translucent pitch.</p>
<p>Google will also allow video providers to sell their own content, and in some cases, will allow them to use their own video player, a first for the company. Sony, for instance, will use its Crackle video player for its content.</p>
<p>Reports that YouTube had a deal with Sony to show full-length movies and TV shows on the site <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090406/southpark-to-netflix-stripes-to-youtube/">surfaced earlier this month</a>. Last month, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090330/disneys-decision-hulu-youtube-or-something-else/">reports also indicated that YouTube was talking to Disney (DIS) about getting movies and ABC TV shows</a> on the site, but since then I&#8217;ve been told that Hulu, the joint venture between News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox and GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090402/hulu-makes-room-for-a-third-disney-deal-coming-soon/">has all but locked up ABC shows for an exclusive deal</a>.</p>

<p>Reach TV viewers through more than one screen<br />

<p><a title="Google TV Ads" href="http://www.google.com/adwords/tvads/" target="_blank">Google TV Ads</a> makes it easy for advertisers of all sizes to reach customers watching television. These days, many full-length television programs are also available for Internet users to watch online. These programs may appear in various places, including the websites of the networks which originally broadcast them and on other sites that specialize in video content. What if an advertiser wants <span style="color: #000000;">to reach the audience of a particular program, no matter whether they&#8217;re watching on a television or online?</span><br style="color: #000000;" /><br style="color: #000000;" /></p>
<div><span style="color: #000000;"> We&#8217;re excited to announce the beta launch of Google TV Ads Online. This is a new feature of Google TV Ads</span> that lets advertisers place commercials into the ad breaks of TV programs watched online. It <strong><span style="font-weight: normal;">works in the same way as Google TV Ads: advertisers can target specific programs and select their cost-per-thousand (CPM) bid. Based on their targets, budget and bid, ads are</span></strong><strong><span style="font-weight: normal;"> inserted in the same program breaks that were designed for advertising when the programs first aired. Today, YouTube launched a new destination for full-length <a title="shows and movies" href="http://www.youtube.com/blog?entry=XyjuFGWCPpQ" target="_blank">shows and movies</a></span><span style="color: #000000;">, and advertisers will be able to use Google TV Ads Online to reach the millions of people who come to YouTube to watch this content. </span><span style="color: #000000;">That&#8217;s not only good for advertisers, but content partners who are looking to generate revenue from their videos online. Ads will also be shown on other websites that carry full-length video programs. </span><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span><br style="color: #000000;" /></p>
