On the bright side ... actually, there is no bright side.

After a massive breach of its computer systems yesterday, LivingSocial has sent out emails to all of the 50 million customers impacted, a company spokesman said, and is now working with law enforcement in an investigation to help find the perpetrators.

The company declined to give more information about how the hackers might have entered the Washington, D.C., daily deals company’s system to get access to names, emails, birthdates and encrypted passwords. But it did note that it was taking extra measures to restrict access to all of its systems and consumer data and has been doing heavy monitoring of consumer accounts.

LivingSocial also underscored that credit card information of its users has not been hacked. “We store credit card data through a financial processing network, so the full number literally does not exist anywhere in our system,” the spokesman said.

Still, the hack is a huge blow for LivingSocial, which is owned in part by Amazon, impacting 50 million customers, who will now be required to reset their passwords. All of LivingSocial’s countries across the world appear to have been affected, except in Thailand, Korea, Indonesia and the Philippines, as LivingSocial units Ticketmonster and Ensogo there were on separate systems.

This is the latest big data breach in the consumer Internet space, which has seen troublesome incursions into some high-profile companies recently, including Zappos, LinkedIn and Evernote.

The attack comes at a tough time for the company, since it has been trying to turn itself around after a downturn across the daily deals landspace. LivingSocial got a large cash infusion recently from investors to help stanch its losses. Amazon owns 29 percent of the company.

Another cyber-attack in a long line of worrisome incursions.

LivingSocial, the daily deals site owned in part by Amazon, has suffered a massive cyber attack on its computer systems, which an email from CEO Tim O’Shaughnessy — just sent to employees and obtained by AllThingsD.com — said resulted in “unauthorized access to some customer data from our servers.”

The hack includes customer names, emails, birthdates and encrypted passwords.

The breach has impacted 50 million customers of the Washington, D.C.-based company, who will now be required to reset their passwords. All of LivingSocial’s countries across the world appear to have been affected, except in Thailand, Korea, Indonesia and the Philippines, as LivingSocial units Ticketmonster and Ensogo there were on separate systems.

One positive note in a not-so-positive situation: The email sent to employees and customers noted that neither customer credit card nor merchant financial information was accessed in the cyber attack.

This is the latest big data breach in the consumer Internet space, which has seen troublesome incursions into some high-profile companies recently, including Zappos, LinkedIn and Evernote.

When asked for comment on the email, a LivingSocial PR spokesman confirmed the attack and that 50 million customers were impacted.

The attack comes at a tough time for the company, since it has been trying to turn itself around after a downturn across the daily deals landspace. LivingSocial got a large cash infusion recently from investors to help staunch its losses. Amazon owns 29 percent of the company.

More to come, but here’s the email sent to employees, including one that will be sent to customers soon:

Re: Security Incident

LivingSocialites –

This e-mail is important, so please read it to the end.

We recently experienced a cyber-attack on our computer systems that resulted in unauthorized access to some customer data from our servers. We are actively working with law enforcement to investigate this issue.

The information accessed includes names, email addresses, date of birth for some users, and encrypted passwords — technically ‘hashed’ and ‘salted’ passwords. We never store passwords in plain text.

Two things you should know:

1. * The database that stores customer credit card information was not affected or accessed.

2. * The database that stores merchants’ financial and banking information was not affected or accessed.

The security of our customer and merchant information is our priority. We always strive to ensure the security of our customer information, and we are redoubling efforts to prevent any issues in the future.

To ensure our customers and merchants are fully informed and protected, we are notifying those who may have been impacted via email explaining what happened, expiring their passwords, and requesting that they create new passwords. A copy of the note is included below this email.

If you have any questions or concerns, please visit Pulse –https://pulse.livingsocial.com/intranet/Home/more_updates.html — for a list of frequently asked questions. If you have additional questions that aren’t answered in the FAQs, please submit them via email to XXX@livingsocial.com.

Because we anticipate a high call volume and may not be able to answer or return all calls in a responsible fashion, we are likely to temporarily suspend consumer phone-based servicing. We will be devoting all available resources to our web-based servicing.

I apologize for the formality of this note, which the circumstances demand. We need to do the right thing for our customers who place their trust in us, and that is why we’re taking the steps described and going above and beyond what’s required. We’ll all need to work incredibly hard over the coming days and weeks to validate that faith and trust.

– Tim

Please note that LivingSocial will never ask you directly for personal or account information in an email. We will always direct you to the LivingSocial website — and require you to login — before making any changes to your account.
He's back, and this time the well-known entrepreneur wants to give you a digital charge card.

High-profile Silicon Valley entrepreneur Max Levchin is launching a new mobile payments startup today called Affirm.

It’s the first project emerging from Levchin’s San Francisco tech incubator Hard, Valuable, Fun (HVF), which he started after selling his last company — Slide — to Google and then eventually leaving the search giant. Previous to that, Levchin and investor Peter Thiel had sold PayPal to eBay.

While it might seem at first as if Affirm is in direct competition with other mobile payments-focused companies such as Square and Stripe, it seems to be aimed at another layer of the value chain in an effort to improve conversion for mobile payments.

In fact, Stripe — in which Levchin is an investor, too — will be processing credit card payments on the back end.

But it will be an uphill battle for Levchin in the current payments arena, with a range of challenges from a multitude of rivals to regulatory scrutiny to the risks associated with credit in general.

Its most similar competitor, for example, is Klarna, a hugely funded company based in Sweden that offers payment solutions for a wide range of online storefronts across Europe that did $200 million in revenue last year. Klarna, which means “clear” in Swedish, is likely to be eying the U.S. market and has well-regard VC Mike Moritz of Sequoia Capital on its board.

As part of its effort, Affirm will use Facebook for authentication of consumers, and also use a number of other social and data signals to assess risk. It will then guarantee payment to merchants — who will pay Affirm a fee — after this check.

“We are trying to get as close as possible to one-click, which has always been the case on the desktop,” said Levchin in an interview today. “In mobile, it has become an imperative to be able to buy it now or you lose a customer quickly.”

Levchin described Affirm as a digital charge card rather than a credit card, trying to be valuable to merchants by lowering the abandonment rate of mobile transactions. Affirm’s beta launch retail partner is 1-800-Flowers.

“You will essentially be putting a purchase on a digital tab, and we are going to make it work for us by looking at all available data to determine if you are someone who will pay it back,” said Levchin.

Like an American Express or other charge card, consumers will have about 30 days to settle bills, although Affirm will not be making any money from them.

As to why he decided to enter the increasingly competitive online payment space — which is also rife with regulatory and fraud issues — Levchin said that his efforts at PayPal did not go far enough.

“Payments online are still too hard — we started the revolution with PayPal and democratized payments for small businesses, but we stopped short of changing the system,” he said. “The world is now awash in data and we can see consumers in a lot clearer ways.”

In addition, he added, the “overwhelming transformation of everything toward mobile changes all the fundamentals.”

Relying on Facebook could be an issue, of course, opening up a thicket of privacy issues and also worrisome reliance on the social networking giant. But Levchin said that Affirm’s system depends on the company for confirming identity more than anything else and there will eventually be a number of ways to do that.

Other data Affirm will be using, he said, range from incomes per zip code and even a user’s mobile device ID.

Affirm has been funded by Levchin and a group of friends in the “low-digit millions,” he said, with only a few dozen employees compared to bigger mobile payments efforts from others.

He said he knows the risk of entering the space, especially given that there are only so many solutions and a limited retailer attention.

Still, Levchin noted: “I just think there is so much more to do. Technology has come a long way since PayPal.”

AllThingsD takes a ride in a New York City cab that uses Square's mobile payments system.

In New York City, there are currently 13,237 official taxicabs equipped with technology from either VeriFone or Creative Mobile Technologies to process credit card payments.

But over the past six months, riders may have seen something a little different in the back of taxicabs: An iPad you can swipe your credit card through, installed by the mobile payments start-up Square.

Back in March, Square, led by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, won the approval of the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) to run the test pilot. Of the 30 cabs that were approved, approximately half of them were outfitted with Square.

In other cities — San Francisco, Portland, Miami and Seattle, to name a few — thousands of taxi drivers rely on a small Square card reader, plugged into a smartphone, to accept riders’ credit card payments. In New York City, where the card readers aren’t allowed, the system was a little different.

For riders, a “Square cab” includes a touchscreen iPad, on which they can sign their credit card receipts with their fingers and request paperless receipts through email or text. For the 15 drivers, it meant paying a lower transaction fee — 2.75 percent per charge — almost half the processing fees they normally pay, which run as high as 5 percent per transaction.

Now, after 34,000 rides and 100,000 miles traveled, Square says it’s winding down the taxicab pilot over the next few weeks. So what happens next?

Earlier this week, a Forbes story indicated that Square was about to a sign a contract to power payments in taxicabs in the city, based on a report from a business research Web site called PrivCo. Both Square and a spokesperson for the Taxi & Limousine Commission have vehemently denied that there is any sort of contract in place.

In fact, Allan Fromberg, spokesman for the TLC, says there currently isn’t a contract to be had at all. The TLC is planning on introducing a new set of rules and specifications for taxicab payments in the coming months, and will open up the market to companies that can meet those specifications. Fromberg declined to say whether the new rules will involve mobile technology, or systems that would support lower transaction costs.

He did say that the Square pilot has, for all intents and purposes, been a success. And Square seems to agree.

“We’re very grateful to the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission for partnering with us on this pilot,” a Square spokesman said in a statement. “We’ll use our findings to further improve Square and make commerce and transportation even easier for millions of riders and drivers in New York and around the country.”

When you ask the average person what is the underlying technology used to make the connection to their digital wallets, the answer will be “who cares?”

With last Wednesday’s Apple iPhone 5 unveiling, and the recent Nokia Lumia launch, mobile is on top of the media agenda. But as the screen size and connector stories die down, the question of “when will my mobile phone become my wallet?” rises up once again. I’ve read at least a dozen stories about the NFC-less iPhone 5 in the past few days, and my question remains, who cares?

It baffles me why almost everyone uses the terms “mobile wallet” and “digital wallet” interchangeably, and why so many people further constrain the already-limited idea of a mobile wallet by equating it with Near Field Communication (NFC).

Let me be crystal clear on these two points:

Your mobile phone won’t be the one device that will forever banish your leather wallet to the back of a drawer. It will, however, be an important access point to your digital wallet — which will live in the cloud and follow you wherever you go.

NFC is a technology, not a strategy. It enables communication between two devices that are close to each other (hence the name). It is not the Holy Grail for mobile payments.

Why mobile wallets are not digital wallets
Simply put, the term “mobile wallet” refers to when the actual mobile phone, or other mobile device, becomes the wallet. All of your financial information, such as bank account and credit card numbers, are stored on the mobile device, and you need to have the device with you for the transaction to be possible.

Digital wallets exist in the cloud. They are not tethered to one specific device such as a mobile phone, but are accessible from a variety of devices (laptop, iPad, ultrabook, Xbox, etc.) and in a number of ways. Sensitive financial information is stored in the cloud, not on the actual device.

Already, at The Home Depot, you can pay without ever pulling anything out of your pocket at all. You can pay just using your phone number and PIN that directly connects to your digital wallet. But this is just the beginning of the revolution.

For example, let’s say you’re in your car and you want to drive through the local fast food joint. Instead of whipping out your wallet or looking for your phone, you “check in” to the fast food joint’s point-of-sale system (POS) using the digital wallet accessible from your car’s connected onboard computer. The restaurant immediately recognizes you from the image transmitted when you check in, and can look at what you’ve previously bought at that restaurant via your digital wallet. It’s able to not only ask if you want “the usual” but also to deliver special offers to thank you for your loyalty.

When you pull up and get your food, no money exchanges hands — you don’t even have to tap a device against a terminal. The meal is charged to your digital wallet. This is all technically possible today.

Why NFC does not equal mobile payments
Mobile payments break into two main camps — what we call “remote” and “proximity” payments. Remote payments happen when you don’t need to be in the same room as someone else to use your mobile phone to pay for something — buying an item on the eBay mobile app for example. This is huge today.

Proximity payments are when you need to be in the same room to make the payment. There are many technologies you could use to make a proximity payment. Bluetooth, RFID, even an audio signal could initiate a mobile payment from your phone — and yes, NFC could also do this. What most people don’t realize is that NFC is not a one-size-fits-all technology. It has different modes that do different things and have different levels of security. Let me tell you about two:

P2P mode NFC: this is the simplest mode available and just allows a fast connection to be made between two devices. However, it just identifies and connects the two devices — the transaction happens “in the cloud” behind a secure firewall because P2P mode while easy, is not secure.

Secure Element NFC: This is what most people equate with mobile payments. Secure element NFC puts a safety box in your phone, which stores all your financial information. One of the problems is that the safety box can be anywhere on the phone — the hardware, SIM card, you could in theory even pop it into the battery case. All the companies that touch the phone or the customer have potential access to the secure element but they all need to work together to make an NFC payment work. This is one of the many problems that is stifling fast adoption.

No retailer will have multiple NFC boxes to take payments from different networks, and the NFC terminals shipping today do little more than just transmit the card number and transaction size. They’re not equipped to automatically accept the complex coupons and offers that make the digital wallet so exciting. On the technology side, carriers are trying one solution, phone manufacturers another, and technology companies yet another. Meanwhile, the consumer is standing at the register thinking “really, how hard is it to pull out my credit card?”

Why would Apple want to step into that mess?

In spite of the technological advances that make digital payments possible, it will not be any one technology that wins the day for either the consumer or the retailer.

Sure, the technology needs to be great, and simple, and it should get out of the way of the user. The much more critical part of the equation will be what the digital wallet will offer beyond just another way to pay. It needs to remove complexity from your life, not add to it. Those digital wallets that are able to safely store your financial information — your credit cards, airline miles, balances, etc. — plus have the ability to receive relevant and real time coupons and offers that are tailored specifically to each user, will be the ones embraced by both consumers and the brands that want to reach them.

It’s inevitable that digital wallets will become an indispensable part of consumers’ everyday lives, and one that will save them time and money. The new iPhone 5 and its competitors will surely be one of the primary vehicles people will use to access their digital wallets while on the go, but when you ask the average person what is the underlying technology used to make that connection, the answer will be “who cares?”

Relevance to the consumer will be king, and the ability to act in a seamless and secure environment across any device or platform will be what matters most to that consumer. For this vision to be truly realized it will be digital wallets, not mobile wallets, that will rule the day.

Who knew it was so expensive to save money?

FreeMonee Network has raised $34 million to join one of the hottest Web 2.0 trends: Digital couponing.

The three-year-old company in San Mateo, Calif., follows other big-money rounds, including WhaleShark raising $150 million, CouponCabin raising $54 million and Coupons.com raising $30 million.

Who knew it was so expensive to save money?

FreeMonee’s round was led by Charles E. Ryan, current chairman of UFG Asset Management and former chief country officer and CEO of Deutsche Bank Group in Russia. Returning investors, including Redpoint Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures, Opus Capital Ventures and Pinnacle Ventures, also participated.

To date, the company has raised $45 million in total.

FreeMonee falls somewhere in between a Groupon and a rewards program, like the ones offered by American Express.

The first time I wrote about FreeMonee, I explained: “The idea piggybacks on concepts that have been in existence for years. Today, credit card companies reward customers with points when they visit certain hotels or rental car companies, so why can’t that be applied on a much wider basis? Why can’t your credit card company track how much you’ve spent at particular retailers, and calculate what rewards you may qualify for?”

The offers don’t need to be purchased in advance or printed out. Consumers automatically get the discount when they use the same credit card that received the offer. The offers can appear in a number of formats, from a Web site to an email or a line item within their bank statement.

While there are a dozen or so companies competing in this general card-linked offer space, FreeMonee has another spin on the concept, too.

They aren’t actually offering coupons, but are handing out gifts. Merchants, retailers and restaurants sign up with FreeMonee to grant consumers $5 or $10, in the hope that they will come into the store and spend much more. Once the purchase is made, a credit appears on the consumer’s card within three to 14 days. Cardholders can’t directly enroll in the program, but must access promotions through their financial institution. By this definition, the company is competing with Wrapp, a social gifting company.

The massive funding round will go toward hiring and to build out the support teams in charge of managing bank deployments.

Here’s the full release:

FREEMONEE NETWORK RAISES $34 MILLION,

MORE THAN THREE TIMES ITS SERIES A ROUND

Fueled by Rapid Expansion with Top Retailers and U.S. Card Issuers,

FreeMonee is Driving Marketing Spend Shift—Changing the Economics of Advertising

SAN MATEO, CALIF. – August 7, 2012 – FreeMonee Network, the world’s first and only provider of consumer gift incentives, today announced $34 million in investment funding led by Charles E. Ryan, current Chairman of UFG Asset Management and former Chief Country Officer and CEO of Deutsche Bank Group in Russia. Returning investors, including Redpoint Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures, Opus Capital Ventures and Pinnacle Ventures also participated. This round is more than triple the initial $11 million 2010 Series A round and brings the company’s total raise to $45 million. The new funding will fuel FreeMonee’s rapid expansion.

“FreeMonee Gifts are a new class of consumer incentive that will change the economics of advertising forever, marking the death of coupons,” said Gadi Maier, CEO, president and co-founder of FreeMonee. “The FreeMonee promise may seem too good to be true—and our early results extend that perception, with sales lift of 400–700 percent and return on ad spend of 500–900 percent. These amazing results far surpass the performance of existing marketing products, so demand is exceeding our early expectations. The new funds will help us to expand FreeMonee to even more retailers and broaden programs with top U.S. banks and credit card issuers.”

FreeMonee’s product addresses three key challenges facing the market today: retail marketers struggle to drive growth without resorting to brand-eroding coupons or discounts; consumers labor through floods of offers and deals; and financial institutions seek new products to positively engage customers. FreeMonee Gifts are unique consumer incentives that meet these challenges head-on and deliver clear benefits to each group:

1) Retailers generate profitable new sales at scale.
2) Consumers receive relevant and irresistible incentives.
3) Card issuers engage customers while increasing card usage.

FreeMonee Gifts link directly to a consumer’s credit or debit card, delivering cash gifts that can be spent on any purchase at designated stores or restaurants. Unlike a coupon, the consumer is free to spend any amount they want—there are no conditions.

To deliver a no-strings-attached incentive to consumers, that is profitable for retailers, is extremely difficult. FreeMonee invested two years in developing a proprietary Gift Underwriting Engine that matches the right gift, to the right consumer, at the right amount. The results are response rates that are 10–50 times that of traditional promotions or coupons and profitable new sales for merchants.

“FreeMonee is attractive because it is a simple, powerful idea that will change how marketers reach customers. The company should be the beneficiary when marketers shift their ad spend from less efficient vehicles to the FreeMonee approach,” said lead investor Charles E. Ryan. “This is the first really big idea to come along in the retail marketing space in a long time, and I believe it will change the game. I was excited to lead this round, because I want to be part of the sea change in advertising that FreeMonee will create.”

Of the $300 billion merchants spend annually on promotions and direct marketing initiatives, much is wasted because it doesn’t shift consumer behavior. Offers, even in their newest forms, are not motivating consumers to act in a substantially different way. The FreeMonee Gift is proven to be different. Consumers love the simplicity and freedom offered by a FreeMonee Gift and go out of their way to visit the store or restaurant and use that gift before it expires. As a result, more of the dollars spent by marketers go directly into the hands of consumers, creating a far more effective and efficient way for merchants to generate incremental sales.

Since its November 2011 consumer launch, FreeMonee is experiencing rapid growth. FreeMonee currently delivers gifts through partnerships with four of the top eight banks and card issuers, and is in development with several others. Fueled by unprecedented initial results, FreeMonee now delivers FreeMonee Gifts to millions of customers each week from a variety of merchants across 30 categories.

About FreeMonee Network

FreeMonee is changing the economics of advertising by enabling stores and restaurants to attract customers on demand using FreeMonee Gifts. With its unique new consumer incentive, FreeMonee delivers gifts of money directly to cardholders of the largest financial institutions. Customized to precisely match consumer interest, gifts allow consumers to purchase anything they want at designated stores or restaurants—no strings attached. The gifts are made possible by FreeMonee’s proprietary Gift Underwriting Engine, which accurately determines the right gift to ensure the highest level of consumer interest and the best return on ad spend for a merchant. Unlike traditional coupons or offers, FreeMonee Gifts feel like a gift card from a friend—money to spend at places consumers like. For retail marketers, FreeMonee Gifts enable brands to attract large volumes of profitable, incremental customer visits—without discounting. For banks and credit card companies, FreeMonee provides the opportunity to positively engage customers and strengthen loyalty.

Founded in 2009 and located in San Mateo, California, FreeMonee is led by former executives of Google, Visa, Oracle, Cisco, Procter & Gamble and Coca- Cola. To date, FreeMonee has raised $45 million in funding with investments from Charles E. Ryan, Opus Capital Ventures, Redpoint Ventures and Sutter Hill Ventures, among others. Through continued partnerships with the top U.S. financial institutions, the company expects 50 million households to have access to FreeMonee Gifts in 2012.

In advance of the company’s press conference today, Paypal is announcing that it has secured partnerships with three of the top point-of-sales providers, giving it access to nearly 40 million terminals worldwide.

The partnerships are important because it makes rolling out PayPal’s in-store payments technology to retailers much easier.

PayPal is hosting an event at its San Jose headquarters later this morning to announce the next batch of retailers that are adopting the company’s in-store payments solution. AllThingsD’s Liz Gannes will be there to cover the announcements live, starting at 10 am PT.

To date, PayPal has deployed its service to all 2,000 Home Depots, but it has a long way to go in meeting its goal of having 20 major retailers by the end of the year.

One reason why PayPal is able to deploy its services to retailers so quickly is because it only requires sending out a software update to the retailers’ terminals — in other words, retailers won’t have to purchase all new hardware. This morning, PayPal confirmed it has signed up VeriFone and Equinox Payments, the largest and third-largest providers, respectively, which will handle those software updates. PayPal already had a relationship with Ingenico, the second-largest provider.

The relationships inked today are focused on solving back-end integration problems for merchants. But the front-end experience is all about the consumer.

At participating stores, consumers will be able to pay with PayPal by either using a PayPal-issued credit card or by entering a mobile phone number and PIN code into the terminal. Down the road, PayPal could also support near field communication technology.

All told, the three terminal providers manage about roughly 40 million terminals worldwide, representing a large majority of the terminals in existence.

Square is seeking to raise a fresh round of capital at a valuation of up to $4 billion, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

Square is seeking to raise a fresh round of capital at a massive valuation of up to $4 billion, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

If the company is successful, it will have quadrupled its worth since raising $100 million at a $1 billion valuation only 10 months ago.

While that would be astonishing for a three-year-old company, it’s important to note that negotiations continue, and that investors could ultimately value the company at a slightly more modest number (hmm, like $3 billion?!).

A Square spokesman declined to comment.

Square, which was founded by Twitter inventor Jack Dorsey, has quickly made accepting credit cards via a mobile phone into a mainstream and affordable concept for small merchants.

Over the past year, it has quickly expanded beyond handing out magnetic-swipe readers to offer more robust experiences for both consumers and merchants, including software on the Apple iPad that acts like a register, and software on the iPhone that is a virtual wallet.

The payments method has received a warm reception from mostly small businesses, including taxicabs, food trucks, coffee shops and even lawyers and accountants.

The rumors of Square looking to raise more capital started spreading after Owen Thomas, formerly of the Daily Dot, noticed that Dorsey and Square’s COO Keith Rabois were in Boston and Baltimore, where many institutional investors are based. Thomas called Legg Mason, which confirmed it was looking at the San Francisco company.

Previous investors in Square’s three rounds, totaling roughly $137 million, include Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Tiger Global Management, Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Visa and well-known entrepreneur Richard Branson.

The big question is whether Square will be able to demand such a hefty valuation.

To determine that, based on what is known about the company, I did some back-of-the napkin calculations to come up with its annual revenue.

Last month, the company said it is now processing $4 billion in annual transactions. Since we know that Square charges 2.75 percent per swiped transaction, and 3.5 percent plus 15 cents per keyed-in transaction, we can start to get a better picture of its finances.

Let’s assume that a quarter of the company’s transactions are keyed in — which demands the higher rate. That would mean the company’s revenue would total nearly $83 million for swiped transactions, and $35 million for keyed-in transactions. Because of the additional 15-cent fee per transaction, let’s add another $15 million (which might be generous, but would break down to 100 million transactions at $10 apiece).

In all, the company’s annual revenue would then be close to $122 million.

Most, but not all of that revenue, is then handed over to the credit card companies for processing fees.

To be sure, the company has grown quickly since its inception, and has its eyes set on the very large point-of-sales market. This year, Square said it had plans to expand internationally, and has just hired a new executive from PayPal to take the lead on the effort. In the future it could also generate revenue from advertising or other loyalty programs, although it does not today.

But, by at least one historical measure, the valuation is rich beyond belief.

PayPal, which was also looking to disrupt the banking industry by enabling peer-to-peer payments online, was sold for $1.5 billion to eBay in 2002, just months after going public at a valuation of nearly $800 million.

At the time it went public, the company was roughly doubling year over year and had generated $103.7 million in 2001, its first full year of operations — or slightly less than Square’s estimated revenues.

Much like PayPal back then, Square faces intense competition, making alliances with much larger companies or raising big war chests critically important.

Square faces stiff competition and pricing pressure from Intuit, eBay’s PayPal, Google and other upstarts, like Pay Anywhere.

Still, it has made a splash that is seeing major reverberations around the sector, which a big valuation will make larger still.

Speakers? We got your D10 speakers.

A month ago, I posted an initial list of speakers for the 10th D: All Things Digital conference.

After a decade, the event — which is held in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., just south of Los Angeles, at the end of May — has attracted another amazing group of speakers, including: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; serial entrepreneur Sean Parker, who will appear with Spotify co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek; Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus; Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz; LinkedIn Chairman and VC Reid Hoffman, who will appear with the social business site’s CEO Jeff Weiner; and Skype CEO Tony Bates.

Now, here’s another group of stellar speakers we’ve added to the programming lineup (and there are still even more big names to come in the weeks ahead): Oracle CEO Larry Ellison; former tech analyst superstar and now VC Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins; Intellectual Ventures’ Nathan Myhrvold; Pixar co-founder and Disney animation head Dr. Ed Catmull; and Visa President John Partridge.

Larry Ellison, CEO and founder of the enterprise giant Oracle, needs little introduction, as one of tech’s highest profile figures and a true Silicon Valley icon. Frankly, I think the short bio that’s on Oracle’s Web site says it all: “Larry Ellison has been CEO of Oracle Corporation since he founded the company in 1977. He also races sailboats, flies planes, and plays tennis and guitar.” There will be a lot to talk about with the voluble and always entertaining exec — who appeared at the D conference once before many years ago — from the current state of the tech industry to insights to where it’s all going. (In addition, Ellison has agreed to appear on a panel we are doing as a tribute to his close friend, Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs.)

Another well-known tech figure is Meeker, who is now a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, having joined the storied venture capital firm in early 2011. She focuses there on investments in its digital practice and via KP’s Digital Growth Fund, working with companies such as Spotify, Jawbone and One King’s Lane. But Meeker is perhaps best known for her long stint — 1991 to 2010 — as a star Internet research analyst at Morgan Stanley, where she brought many of the Internet’s great companies to the attention of Wall Street and beyond. She also wrote a series of groundbreaking reports on the landscape. That includes her annual “State of the Internet,” which Meeker will debut this year at the conference in an extended demo of her always riveting Internet trends presentation.

Nathan Myhrvold is also a tech legend, having worked for 14 years as chief strategist and CTO of Microsoft. But, instead of retiring, the avid inventor decided to focus on patents, founding and leading a controversial company called Intellectual Ventures, which buys them up and licenses them out (or sues if it doesn’t sell). With all the mishegas around patents right now, it’s a good time to have Myhrvold back to explain it all and perhaps to take some of the blame for the explosion in intellectual property lawsuits. (Myhrvold also co-authored a cookbook, “Modernist Cuisine,” so we hope we will also get some sort of futuristic cooking demo. Perhaps, Patently Delicious Flan?)

Speaking of tasty, the animation from Pixar over the years has been just that and it’s been one of Disney’s greatest acquisitions. Given how much Pixar has contributed to animation technology, we are glad to finally get Dr. Ed Catmull onstage. As co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios and president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, he will discuss where entertainment and technology are intersecting and where they are not. Catmull is a geek’s geek in the industry — having also founded the computer graphics laboratory at the New York Institute of Technology, the computer division of Lucasfilm, as well as Pixar, which he did with chief creative officer John Lasseter. Get ready to talk about image compositing, motion blur, subdivision surfaces, cloth simulation and rendering techniques, texture mapping and the z-buffer. Also, Catmull’s five Academy Awards.

Lastly, it is perfect timing for bringing on John Partridge, president of Visa. With swirling issues around online identity theft, digital privacy, the future of money and the rise of upstart competitors such as Square, Partridge has his hands full at the credit card giant. One of the most neglected arenas in tech, the way we manage payments is perhaps the biggest story of the next era, especially as it relates to mobile and the rise of smartphones as all-purpose devices.

To the contrary, Sephora is encouraging customers to use their phones in the store to help them shop.

Sephora has completed an entire makeover of its digital presence today, including a new Web site, a new mobile site, an iPhone app, and iPads and iPod touches in many of its stores.

Unlike other stores that flinch when consumers pull out their phones, fearing that they are scanning bar codes to compare prices, the beauty supply company is embracing the practice.

“The reality is there’s not a lot of price differentiation in our world, and most of our users are loyalty card holders, so it doesn’t worry us,” said Julie Bornstein, SVP of Sephora Direct. “It makes the experience better if you like to shop that way.”

The Sephora app allows consumers to track what products they’ve purchased in the past, find out how many reward points they have, and look up the ingredients of a particular soap, lotion or eye shadow. So far, the app has been downloaded two million times, and the retailer says that shopping from mobile devices grew by 300 percent last year.

Besides, how could Sephora fear mobile, when all 304 stores have iPods and 20 stores have iPads?

Increasingly, retailers are rolling out mobile devices in their stores, especially iDevices, to empower workers to know more about products or even shorten the checkout lines.

Bornstein says Sephora employees walk the store floors with souped-up iPods that have a credit card scanner, so they can ring up a customer after helping him or her find a particular product. The employees also carry around mini-printers, in case the customer wants a paper receipt. But the iPads are not used for checking out; rather, they are a way for customers to access more information about a product, including different kinds of looks that can be created with makeup.

Bornstein says the intention is not to replace the cash register with a mobile device. “We haven’t made any decisions to walk away from registers in stores,” she said. “It’s nice to have a hub.”

As part of the company’s digital makeover, it also has fully integrated with Pinterest, so that users can “pin” any of the 14,000 products on Sephora.com to the bulletin-board service. Bornstein said that of the Web site’s social media traffic drivers, Pinterest is already second only to Facebook.

The mobile app-heavy service allows anyone with stuff, including boutique merchants with quirky stuff to move, to quickly snap photos of items, price them and then -- presumably -- sell.

Last week, I visited Los Angeles to get a gander at some of the many digital companies that are doing some interesting things down south of Silicon Valley.

First stop: HipSwap, a community-based marketplace that is now in 14 U.S. cities after initial tests in Los Angeles and New York City.

Its goal is to de-creep the experience — because no matter how it’s done online, local buying and selling still has a lot of glitches. Using a visual approach (think Pinterest), with hipster social hooks (think Airbnb) and focusing on location (hmm, perhaps think Foursquare), complete with delivery in some cities, HipSwap is hoping to differentiate itself from big players in the space, such as Craigslist and eBay.

The app-heavy HipSwap allows anyone with stuff, including boutique merchants with quirky stuff to move, to quickly snap photos of items, price them and then — presumably — sell. Payment is made via PayPal or credit card, with HipSwap in between the buyer and seller, to ease the transaction’s typical awkwardness.

Because it is local, the items are varied, from trendy baby strollers to funky furniture to antique sewing machines. And, because it is in the L.A. area, HipSwap is also pushing celebrity fare, with a charitable “Shop My Closet” marketplace and video series, which recently included Kyle Richards from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”

The Santa Monica, Calif. start-up recently closed $1.1 million seed funding from a number of prominent investors, such as Founders Fund, Greycroft Partners, as well as former Microsoft exec — and early Pinterest angel — Hank Vigil and Mahalo President Jason Rapp.

Here’s a video interview I did with co-founder and CEO Rob Kramer about the interesting retail concept:

After a test phase, online payments giant PayPal is rolling out its "offline" in-store payments system across the U.S.

Following a test phase in which PayPal allowed its employees to purchase items at a handful of Home Depot stores using a PayPal credit card or account number, the eBay-owned payments giant is rolling out the new payments system in 2,000 Home Depot locations across the U.S. The move comes as competing companies and start-ups are aggressively exploring more mobile and in-store payment options.

Within the next two weeks, PayPal said in a post on the PayPal Blog, every Home Depot in the U.S. will be equipped to accept payments from customers using a PayPal card or mobile phone number and PIN combination.

Yesterday, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, PayPal also said it was increasing its efforts in the area of carrier payments, calling for wireless carriers to “revise standards to help optimize user experience, increase flexibility of carrier payments as a payment method, and increase payout rates for merchants.” The statement comes after Boku — which directly competes with PayPal’s recently acquired Zong — introduced a white-label service for in-store payments with wireless feature phones and smartphones, through a partnership with MasterCard.

In recent weeks, PayPal’s in-store payments system at Home Depot stores has come under fire from Visa, which is working on its own digital wallet service, called V.me. Visa’s global head of product, Jim McCarthy, said that PayPal’s system poses security risks, and that thieves could potentially see a paying customer’s account number as they enter it in at a payment terminal.

PayPal responded by reiterating its commitment to innovating point-of-sale purchasing, and said users’ data is more secure in PayPal’s cloud than it is in their pockets.

Mobile payments start-up Square wants to snag New York City taxicabs -- and its rivals are unlikely to keep quiet about it.

Yesterday, the New York Times reported that New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission is considering the installation of tablet computers in the back of taxicabs, and that Square — the Jack Dorsey-led mobile payments start-up that nabbed $100 million in funding from top-notch investors last year — will throw its hat in the ring to power the credit card payments in cabs.

The experiment, should it become a reality, would involve a special Square-built payment terminal on tablets in the back of 50 taxicabs to start, as well as a Square application that would process riders’ credit card payments. And the swap-out — and the stakes — would go beyond just hardware.

If tablets running Square were to supplant some of the existing technology in the back of New York City cabs — currently supplied by Creative Mobile Technologies LLC and VeriFone Systems Inc., one of the world’s largest electronic payment companies — fee structure and revenue from “Taxi TV” content would also come into question. (It’s important to note that the New York TLC hasn’t formally submitted the Square proposal to its board of commissioners yet; it plans to do so on March 1.)

Of the 13,237 official taxicabs currently on the road in New York City, VeriFone processes the credit card payments in approximately half of them; CMT handles the other half. The two companies were awarded the contracts in the summer of 2007, after the Commission had put out a challenge seeking innovative tech and electronic data tracking for taxicabs; by November 2008, the technology had been fully implemented in all cabs.

The systems currently use cellular data to power the transactions, which is also technically possible through an iPad or another type of tablet device. In addition to the payments technology, current systems provide automated dispatch capabilities, GPS, computerized trip logging and text messaging — also functions that a tablet could likely provide.

So hardware aside, consider the content on the Taxi TV’s. Those loops of news updates, late-night talk show clips and dining guides that cab riders see on the backseat TVs are the result of a partnerships that VeriFone and CMT have forged with TV networks (though the TLC commands 20 percent of the screen time on the primary channel for public service announcements). VeriFone has rolled out NBC content in 12,000 cabs across the U.S.

While we know that content can stream quite nicely on tablet devices, too — and likely provide an even slicker viewing experience — the companies are making money off of back-of-cab media and would lose that if they lost control of the screen. At the same time, more gaming and social networking options are being proposed for the back of cabs, which would provide potential ad revenue streams.

But ultimately the real sticking point could be fees. It’s unclear what a new payment structure would look like, but David S. Yassky, the chairman of the Taxi and Limousine Commission, has been quoted as saying he hopes credit card transaction fees could be lowered.

The TLC Web site currently says that cab owners can expect credit card and debit fees to average 3.5 to 4 percent, whereas Square charges its small-business users 2.75 percent per transaction without additional interchange fees. If Square offers taxi cab medallion owners — who also pay for the installation of the technology up front — a lower fee option on credit card transactions, the way it does for small businesses that shy away from investing in bulkier credit card systems, Square could have a leg up on its rivals.

And those rivals are unlikely to remain quiet.

Verifone has previously taken direct aim at San Francisco-based Square for what it alleged was a security flaw, saying that Square lacked the ability to properly encrypt data. (Square’s Dorsey quickly responded by saying that credit cards are inherently not secure, but that Square continually reviews, verifies, and stands behind the protections that it has put into place in its credit card reading device.)

For now, the San Jose-based payments giant isn’t offering a formal response to the new taxi cab proposal. A spokesman for VeriFone would say only that the company is not going to comment on a proposal nobody has seen yet.

According to the New York Times, Creative Mobile Technologies has also raised concerns about the security of Square’s technology and has previously requested that the vote on the proposal be delayed.

But if the proposal were approved next month, the pilot program using Square on tablets could kick off “within a month or two,” according to Allan Fromberg, a spokesperson for the TLC.

And that’s when things will get interesting in the back of taxicabs.

Katie looks at Google Wallet, the mobile app that lets users pay for things with their cellphone.

Would you rather leave home without your wallet and be penniless all day, or leave your phone at home and be out of touch all day? Many people would rather be penniless. If only phones could be used to pay for things, it would be easier to leave a wallet behind.

Enter Google Wallet, the search engine’s answer to this problem. This mobile app uses a chip in the phone so it can be waved in front of payment stations to buy things. Users set it up by registering a credit card to the phone or loading a Google Prepaid Card with a credit card. A four-digit password enables payment transactions. Google Wallet is rolling out this week to Sprint’s already available, $50 (after $50 mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract) Nexus S 4G phones by way of an Android operating-system software update.

A phone with Google Wallet and a payment terminal.

I’ve been trying Google Wallet in Washington, D.C., and Palo Alto, Calif., and I find it delightfully easy to use. Though still in its infancy, it isn’t hard to imagine digital payments catching on and becoming commonplace. But there are plenty of caveats.

Google Wallet works only with phones with an NFC (near field communication) chip, which allows secure digital transactions over a short distance. In Japan, millions of cellphone users have been using mobile wallets with NFC chips, but the technology has been slow to catch on in other countries. For now, the Nexus S 4G is the only phone in the U.S. that works with Google Wallet, though more phones are expected soon.

Paying with Google Wallet is possible only at stores that offer MasterCard PayPass. In Washington, D.C., near my office and home, these included Sunoco, McDonald’s, CVS and Papyrus; other stores include Home Depot, 7-Eleven, Best Buy and OfficeMax. A MasterCard PayPass finder is built into the app and displays nearby locations where PayPass works. These can be viewed on a map, in a list or filtered by category. For now, only 150,000 merchants have the equipment in stores to use PayPass.

Citi MasterCard is currently the only credit card that can be directly added to Google Wallet, but the Google Prepaid Card can be loaded with other credit cards. Google said it will also work with Visa, American Express and Discover cards, but couldn’t say when.

Several other companies are planning their own digital-payment solutions. Last week, PayPal said it would launch pilot programs at the end of this year for a cloud wallet, usable by entering a phone number and a PIN at the register. Square has launched Square Card Case, a free app available on Android and iPhone that works on the idea of paying with virtual tabs, like starting a tab at a bar. Both ideas from PayPal and Square would avoid the need for phones with NFC chips.

Next month, Google Wallet will let people register their store loyalty cards and gift cards in the app so a Wallet purchase at CVS, for example, would recognize my CVS ExtraCare card. Registering a gift card from, say Macy’s, saves the trouble of carrying the card at all times. (Currently, only American Eagle Outfitters allows loyalty cards and gift cards with Google Wallet in some of its New York stores.)

People also will be able to search for more store coupons on Google’s search engine and click to add them to their Google accounts for synchronizing with Google Wallet.

My first Wallet purchase was at CVS, where I picked up two boxes of tissues and a pack of AA batteries. I waited in the checkout line in anticipation of paying with just a casual wave of my phone. But when the checkout person asked if I had the CVS loyalty card, I still had to dig the card out of my wallet to swipe it for discounts. Once that was done, I waved my phone at the payment terminal, entered my four-digit security code and walked away.

When I bought lunch at McDonald’s, a woman nearby was in awe of my wave-to-pay method and said she couldn’t wait to get it. At 7-Eleven, the man working the register seemed startled by how quickly I paid for a bottle of water, especially after the guy in front of me had spilled several coins and bills on the counter to pay. I used my Google Prepaid Card at CVS and used my registered MasterCard at McDonald’s and 7-Eleven. Each card is represented in the app with an image of a credit card. My Citi MasterCard was the right blue hue and even had my name on it, with just the last four digits of the card number visible.

I added my Citi MasterCard to Google Wallet by entering my credit card information and creating a nickname for the card. After waiting a few seconds for the app to verify my information with Citi, an on-screen message said my card had a $100 limit, but that I could activate my full credit line using a code sent via text message to my cellphone number. This also allowed me to see more data about my account like my last statement balance, current balance and the last payment due date.

If a phone’s screen is in sleep mode, a user must wake it in order for transactions to work. This step was purposely added so people don’t unknowingly buy something when they walk by a PayPass terminal. The four-digit security code has an adjustable time-out period that can last for as little as one minute or as long as 30 minutes. I adjusted my code time-out to 15 minutes and was able, in two tests, to swipe my phone without entering the code.

Google Wallet can’t hold your driver’s license or other official forms of identification, so even if it takes off and works everywhere, you’ll still have to carry your license with you.

As the largest maker of cash registers and other payment processing devices, VeriFone is willing to spend up to $1 billion a year on acquisitions to stay on top.

As the largest maker of cash registers and other payment processing devices, VeriFone is willing to spend up to $1 billion a year on acquisitions to stay on top, by expanding into emerging countries and entering new markets, such as mobile payments.

VeriFone CEO Douglas Bergeron told Bloomberg that his company anticipates acquiring one company a year at roughly $500 million to $700 million, along with several smaller transactions. In all, its purchases could add up to as much as $1 billion annually.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company is eyeing emerging markets. such as Turkey and Brazil, and is seeing investment opportunities by teaming up with Google and other players. Google Wallet enables Android phone users to link their bank accounts to their phones and use them to pay for items in a store, using near field communications.

The move to mobile payments may still be in its infancy, but as a major maker of credit card terminals, VeriFone must consider new entrants — such as Google –very disruptive. Earlier today, I wrote about how Apple products are becoming fairly mainstream at retail locations, and may increasingly reduce the need for registers.

In March, VeriFone lashed out against Square, the San Francisco start-up that has been getting a lot of press for offering a mobile-phone-based payments solution to small merchants. VeriFone claimed that the devices Square was handing out to anyone looking to accept credit card payments were not secure, but many considered the attack a sign of VeriFone’s insecurity in the market.

Since then, Square has started adding an additional level of encryption, and VeriFone has unveiled its own copycat product, which will allow retailers to use an iPad or Android tablet for in-store checkout. It also has other handheld devices for sale, along with iPhone-based swiping solutions.

VeriFone did not provide any hints as to what it may be interested in acquiring. However, Bloomberg suggested that VeriFone could be looking into adding distribution in Asia through an acquisition of a major terminal maker. Likewise, it could also be interested in a payment processor in countries where credit card penetration remains low but is growing. A payment processor would get VeriFone closer to merchants in those markets, and could enable it to offer additional services, such as coupons, daily deals and other loyalty programs.

Mobile devices -- and especially Apple products -- have become fairly mainstream at U.S. retail locations. Today, Pacific Sunwear announced a significant deployment of mobile devices in its stores.

Mobile payments may still be in the infant stage, but mobile devices — and especially Apple products — have become fairly mainstream at retail locations around the country.

And there are more significant deployments underway.

Lowe’s announced last week that it was rolling out 42,000 handheld devices at stores in the U.S. and Canada. That closely follows announcements by Home Depot, Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters.

While some of the retailers are a little shy about saying which devices are being deployed, for the most part they are using Apple products — an iPhone, an iPad or an iPod touch. And while the devices may eventually be used to accept payments, many of them are starting off as tools for salespeople to look up answers or to check on product availability.

It’s not just large retailers, either — small stores are also jumping on the mobile bandwagon.

I happened to see an iPad being used in a small winery in eastern Washington state. The device, which was mounted on a mechanical arm, was still in the process of being set up, as evidenced by the nearby iPhone, calculator, traditional credit card point-of-sale machine and cash register at the nearby counter. But a complete changeover was in the works.

And the list keeps growing, according to South Plainfield, New Jersey-based Global Bay, a company that develops mobile software for the retail environment.

It is announcing today that it is helping Pacific Sunwear, a retailer known for surfer-style apparel, to roll out iPads in 300 stores, with plans for 500 to 600 more by next year.

Global Bay CEO Sandeep Bhanote said he’s been in the business of mobile retail solutions for a long time, but it is “the Apple line of products that has reinvigorated the market and is bringing it [mobile] to the mass market … Everyone is looking at the Apple technology line. No one is looking at Android, or at the older generation of devices … It’s an Apple world in retail, although that could change next year.”

A variety of companies, including Google, Square and Verifone, are also racing to get a piece of the action.

Bhanote said Global Bay did its first iPad deployment last year, in November.

It was at a mall store called Things Remembered, and the iPad served as a self-service kiosk where customers could select the right engraving for a particular item, such as a jewelry box.

“Why not use the iPad to streamline the experience?” Bhanote asked.

Even in these early stages, there’s evidence that handheld devices may evolve, moving from tools that automate annoying or painful processes to becoming sales-generating machines.

“The next phase is introducing a commerce component,” he added.

Bhanote declined to say how many iPads it has helped to deploy in the past year, but said that retailers are already starting to see results. One retailer reported that it experienced a 12 percent increase in average order transaction when a customer was serviced with an Apple device in the store.

PacSun associates will carry iPads in the store to help customers place online orders when products are out of stock. Using an application built by Global Bay, store associates will be able to find a shirt or pair of shorts and then order it from the iPad, accept the customer’s payment and ensure it is shipped to the customer’s home.

Bhanote said for an apparel chain of that size, being able to close five more transactions a day per store means a lot of money.

However, there are still some logistics to be worked out. If a mobile device replaces the register, where do you store the cash? What happens if a salesperson drops and breaks that $500 device? Worse yet — what if a customer drops it?

Bhanote said PacSun is putting security tags on its iPads, so if someone walks out of the store with one, an alarm will sound. He said other customers have used rubberized cases for protection; in the case of the winery, there was that mechanical arm.

But the winery’s second iPad wasn’t as lucky. The device was being used by associates, who walked around the store with it, and it was accidentally knocked off the table by a customer. It was a very expensive lesson for a small company — especially when the customer only bought one bottle of wine.

Verizon Wireless is announcing a partnership with American Express that will enable its 100-million-plus mobile subscribers to pay for goods online using their phone numbers.

Verizon Wireless is announcing a partnership with American Express this morning that will enable its 100-million-plus mobile subscribers to pay for digital or physical goods online using their phone numbers.

To do so, subscribers enter their phone number and a PIN code at checkout, rather than entering a 16-digit credit card number. The service will work for shopping on any Internet-connected device, including a PC, phone or tablet.

Subscribers will also have to sign up for a Serve account through American Express, which is very similar to a PayPal account and can be funded by a bank account or a credit card.

While the system is designed to make checking out more simple, it could take awhile for consumers and merchants to adopt it. Not only will Verizon subscribers be required to have a Serve account, but online retailers will also have had to integrate Serve as a payment mechanism.

“Yes, they have to be Verizon and a Serve customer, but we are preloading a number of devices — smartphones or tablets — with the Serve app, and when you preload there’s a much greater uptake,” said Dan Schulman, group president, Enterprise Growth, American Express. “They’ll be able to simply or easily transact for any size good, whether it’s a virtual good or hard good.”

Schulman declined to say how many customers have signed up for Serve since it launched in April, but said that the deal with Verizon Wireless is not exclusive, meaning it could partner with other carriers in the future.

Despite these hurdles, this may be a logical intermediary before we see people using their phones to pay for items in the store using near field communication. A number of companies are scrambling to become a player in the digital wallet space, including Google, PayPal, Square and the credit card and payment providers, so this will be one of many options consumers will be able to choose from.

Verizon Wireless has also formed a joint venture called ISIS with AT&T and T-Mobile USA that will launch a near field communication trial next year.

A number of companies have also pursued carrier billing as an option, but convincing carriers to allow large payments on the bill for physical goods has proven difficult. Companies that fall into this bucket include BOKU, BilltoMobile and Zong, which was just acquired by PayPal.

Up until now, the items most often charged to a carrier bill are ringtones, or virtual goods that are purchased inside online games.

Greg Haller, Verizon’s president of enterprise and government, said its partnership with American Express is not designed to compete with carrier billing or its ISIS joint venture. “We’ll still allow virtual goods to go on the bill, but the real opportunity now going forward is that a customer won’t have to go in a shopping cart and enter a 16-digit number. This really turns it into a one-click process. The benefit is the simplicity for the customer, who can now buy it on their phone, by entering their mobile number.”

Over time, additional services will be added, such as coupons and loyalty programs. One partner is vente-privee.com, a French-owned flash sales site that partnered with American Express to enter the U.S.

“We are pleased and we are deploying with more and more functionality all the time,” Schulman said. “We’ve announced a number of partnerships, all of which are being integrated, this being the largest and most strategic that we have. We’ll start to integrate and be in market [with Verizon Wireless] by the end of the year, and we have high hopes for it spurring mobile commerce.”

American Express and Verizon Wireless are also working with Payfone, a New York-based company that the two companies backed financially in the spring. Payfone is running all the authentication in the background to ensure that the phone number entered is valid and corresponds with the correct account.

Pittsburgh-based Dynamics is announcing a $35 million round of financing that it will use to make a more intelligent credit card that it hopes will compete against others in the space, including Square and Google Wallet. It thought it was one of the biggest rounds raised this year by a payments company, and it was for about 20 minutes until Square announced it had raised $100 million.

How ironic. There’s a ton of cash being thrown around to find a better way to pay for things.

Consider the growing list of participants hitching a ride on this money train: Square is trying to create a better register, Google is attempting to build a better wallet, and then there are competing and overlapping efforts being made by the wireless carriers, handset makers, banks, financial institutions and others.

For example, here’s a company doing something as simple as creating a more high-tech credit card, one that doesn’t require customers or retailers to buy new equipment.

Pittsburgh-based Dynamics is announcing a $35 million round of financing — an amount CEO Jeff Mullen is quick to point out is bigger than Square’s last round of $27.5 million (not including a last minute addition by Visa). UPDATE: Before the ink was even dry on this one, Square announced late this evening that it has raised $100 million in a round led by Kleiner Perkins.

Dynamics’ round was led by Bain Capital Ventures with existing investors, including Adams Capital Management and a number of undisclosed angels also participating. The company’s first round raised in 2009 totaled $5.7 million.

While Dynamics isn’t a household name and doesn’t have the same visibility as Square or Google, it has received accolades for its technology. In January, Dynamics won best in show at this year’s CES in the personal electronics category.

So, what does it do?

It is making a more intelligent credit card.

Although it looks the same as the plastic cards you carry around in your wallet, it behaves much differently. Packed inside are a bunch of batteries and miniaturized electronics that can be used to program several credit card numbers and wiped clean if lost. It comes packaged in the same svelte form factor as a Visa or MasterCard, and don’t worry, it’s also waterproof.

A button on the card allows users to toggle between various cards, like a debit, credit or corporate account. Another model enables you to keep your number hidden until a security code unlocks it, and a third model retains information about your rewards points, so they can be spent at the point of purchase without having to wait for a gift card to be sent to you in the mail.

It may not sound as fancy as waiving a mobile phone in front of the register to pay, or even using an iPad as a register, but Mullen argues it’s more practical because it doesn’t require consumers to get new phones or retailers to upgrade their credit card terminals. “Our solution doesn’t require any change to the existing infrastructure,” he said.

The additional financing will be used to double the company’s staff from its current headcount of 30. It will also be investing in manufacturing to increase capacity since all three models are currently in trials, including a deployment with Citi. It is also working on developing cards for Europe, where RFID is a predominant technology.

It is also adding mobile payments to the company’s road map, even though Mullen is not a big believer in the technology. Because of the hardware limitations, he thinks it will take longer for it to be adopted widely.

He declined to say whether the solution would use near field communication chips or some other technology. “Dynamics wants to be the innovation leader for an industry that’s never had innovation. We want to innovate in all areas of tech,” he said.

Mullen said the goal is for the banks to be able to save money or generate new revenue to offset the additional costs of producing a more high-tech piece of plastic. One way is through preventing fraud, another way is by eliminating the cost of mailing gift cards to consumers who would like to redeem the points they earned on rewards cards.

Vente-privee.com, a French-owned flash sales site with about 13 million members and more than $1 billion in European sales, is forming a joint venture with American Express to enter the U.S. market.

Vente-privee.com, a French-owned flash sales site with about 13 million members and more than $1 billion in European sales, is forming a joint venture with American Express to enter the U.S.

This will be the first time vente-privee, which translates to “private sale,” will enter a non-European market. The site is expected to launch late this year, and like its counterpart in France, will offer designer apparel at low prices for limited amounts of time to people who sign up for a membership.

Vente’s move to the U.S. was expected. The joint venture with American Express was not. One might even go as far as to call the match-up perplexing. (Maybe we should warn vente-privee now that American Express is a credit card-issuer and not some sort of patriotic speedy deliver service, like FedEx or UPS!)

As part of the agreement, the two will be equal partners. However, terms of the deal were not disclosed, such as the size of investment or the kinds of resources the companies would be required to contribute.

To be sure, vente was wise to enter into a partnership for its North American debut. It’s the American Express part that’s easy to get hung up on.

Despite vente-privee being more than a decade-old and well established in Europe, it will be walking down an already crowded catwalk. Many start-ups here have done a good job imitating vente’s model and making it its own. Perhaps its closest competitor is Gilt Groupe of New York, which just raised $138 million. Also a contender is ideeli, which just lined its pockets with $40 million in cash. Others with offerings include Amazon and Nordstrom.

Earlier this week, Gilt’s CEO Kevin Ryan downplayed the significance of vente’s impending entrance in an interview with me (like a model would diss another model’s photo shoot).

“There’s only one player in the world to watch,” he said. “But if you weren’t covering this business, you would have asked ‘Who? I never even heard of them.’ That’s the reality, and for them to enter, they’ll have to set up warehouses and sign up members. Basically, you are a start-up…I don’t worry about international players, even ones that are bigger than we are.”

American Express presumably won’t be able to help vente with warehouse space, but the two claim to have a few synergies. In a press release, American Express Enterprise Growth President Dan Schulman said that both brands have a heritage in the luxury market and place a high premium on delivering quality customer service.

Schulman has been busy heading up American Express’s two-month-old digital payments platform, as of recently. He characterized the joint venture as helping the company reach a new audience. Earlier this week, American Express started working with SCVNGR’s LevelUp app to help redeem coupons at a few Levi’s stores.

Founder Jacques-Antoine Granjon didn’t reveal anything more in his statement, either: “The brands where we have strong relationships are excited about extending their offerings into the U.S. market through this joint venture. There is no question that American Express was our partner of choice. As leaders in B2B and B2C market approaches, we will now combine our skill sets to deliver experiences that are unmatched in the U.S. market.”

Visa unveiled a new electronic payments strategy today that will enable the card processor to challenge other players already in the market, such as PayPal and Amazon.

We knew this was coming. Not only did Visa say last week that it would be making a significant mobile payments announcement today, but recent acquisitions made by the card-issuer, including CyberSource, Authorize.net and PlaySpan, hinted that it was on track to get into electronic payments business.

This morning, Visa unveiled a digital wallet that includes “click-to-buy” features for making e-commerce payments. The program is expected to launch in the fall in the U.S. and Canada. More advanced features, such as mobile payments, will launch in other countries first, where mobile usage is high, but card issuance has historically been low.

In the emerging markets, it said very politely that it will “aid in the complexity of the myriad of network operators, handset models and operating systems,” which is code for it’s a big mess so we have nothing to announce now.

Visa’s click-to-buy features will compete directly with Amazon’s 1-click and PayPal services, which are used by many merchants across the Web to speed up the check-out process by only requiring a username and password instead of having to type in a credit card number.

PayPal issued a statement reacting to the news today: “PayPal was built 12 years ago because traditional payment methods weren’t designed for the digital world. We’re light years ahead: More than 98 million people around the world have already trusted us with their digital wallets.”

While ultimately most charges made on PayPal and Amazon end up on a credit card of some sort, this announcement today positions Visa to have a more direct relationship with the card owner to add on additional money-making services. The announcement also will enable the company to compete directly with electronic payment providers, like PayPal and Amazon, as well as other card issuers, such as MasterCard, American Express and Discover, which are all working on new hybrid digital models for the future.

It’s teamed up with 14 or so banks, credit unions and other financial processors to roll the services out.

Key features include:

Click-to-buy: Users will have an online ID and password to make e-commerce purchases instead of using an account number. This will be easy to use across both e-commerce and mobile commerce, and include such activity as paying for virtual goods inside of a game.

The Wallet: Users will be able to store multiple accounts in the digital wallet, including non-Visa payment accounts.

Merchant offers: Users will be able to opt in to receive discounts or promotions.
