Facebook Looking for Japanese Friends

Sharing is caring, and by linking up with one of Japan’s biggest social networking sites, Japanese users are likely to be finally drawn to Facebook. In contrast to its success elsewhere, Facebook has so far failed to establish itself as Japan’s most popular social-networking site. The company, with headquarters in Palo Alto, California, has thus decided to launch a cross-platform feature that will allow users of Facebook and Mixi, a popular Japanese social-networking site, to link to each other’s profiles.

National Public Radio is ramping up its mobile presence. Following the summer launch of a well-received iPhone App, the broadcaster is rolling out an expanded mobile site and an NPR News app for Android, Google’s mobile OS.

EA Hooks Playfish

Electronic Arts is betting big on social gaming. This morning, the videogame publisher said it will acquire social network games maker Playfish for $400 million. An interesting move given that the company’s leadership dismissed rumors of such a deal just last month.

Macworld ’09: iWork ’09, iWork.com

Number two on Phil Schiller’s list of three announcements: iWork ’09. The next iteration of Keynote, Apple’s presentation application, offers some new object transition features: object zoom, a swing transition (Schiller demos it with a Bush-to-Obama slide that gets a laugh from the audience). There are also some new text transitions and chart animations. Finally, Apple’s offering a Keynote Remote application. It’s an iPhone app, of course.
