<p>Yahoo CTO Raymie Stata is stepping down as CTO of the Silicon Valley Internet giant, the company confirmed this afternoon, after I made a query about the change.</p>
<p>He will be replaced by Ash Munshi, Yahoo said.</p>
<p>In a statement, the company said:</p>
<p>&#8220;Raymie Stata, CTO, has taken on a newly created role of EIR at Yahoo! to allow him to return to his entrepreneurial  roots. Yahoo! is excited to appoint Ash Munshi to the role of CTO. Ash has a well-established career managing successful global technology organizations at the most senior levels with a laser focus on meeting and exceeding customer needs.&#8221;</p>
<p>While sources said Stata had planned to leave Yahoo, he will remain an Entrepreneur in Residence there, an unusual arrangement for a big company. Typically, departing execs become EIRs at venture firms.</p>
<p>The latest talent shift at Yahoo is part of a broader attrition problem at the company, which has been persistent for years and has worsened in the wake of the firing of CEO Carol Bartz and a massive strategic review of its options.</p>
<p>Employees at the company have become troubled by the turmoil and are worried about what a possible change of control will bring for Yahoo.</p>
<p>Stata was appointed CTO last June, after having been its Chief Architect. He has reported to Chief Product Officer Blake Irving.</p>

<p>Adam D&#8217;Angelo (pictured here) is too shy to subject himself to a BoomTown video&#8211;or perhaps too savvy&#8211;but he did agree to a sit-down for a short interview recently in a nondescript room in the Palo Alto, Calif., office building that houses Quora, the hot social answers start-up.</p>
<p>D&#8217;Angelo was, of course, the CTO and VP of Engineering at Facebook, as well as a prep school friend of the massive social networking site&#8217;s co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>But D&#8217;Angelo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080511/facebooks-cto-dangelo-to-leave">left the company in mid-2008</a> and with former Facebooker Charlie Cheever launched the question-and-answer site in January, after much venture capitalist shoving to get on board.</p>
<p>With more than $10 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and a whole lot more hype to contend with, D&#8217;Angelo and his small team have been trying to move the site well beyond its Silicon Valley-tech-dudes forum to one in which a plethora of topics and memes thrive.</p>
<p>As was the initial goal, D&#8217;Angelo said the aim remains to become the best place to find pertinent information about just about anything.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Web is a great place for finding information, but a lot of information that is really important is actually in people&#8217;s heads,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo. &#8220;If I had to pick one, I would say Wikipedia is a good comparison [to Quora], but there is room for more.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not such an easy task, which is why D&#8217;Angelo believes most Q&#038;A sites still come up short for users.</p>
<p>&#8220;Quora is a simple interface, but it is very complicated underneath,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Q&#038;A sites in the past had good systems, but they did not add in identity, reputation and quality.&#8221;</p>
<p>The hope is that by adding those elements, as it develops, Quora can more correctly answer the questions people are looking for.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are really interested in info that changes quickly and in unstructured info,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo, which he noted was at the heart of a lot of searches and well beyond data that search engines such as Google (GOOG) provides.</p>

<p>And for answerers, D&#8217;Angelo believes, it also gives them a place to feature their expertise in a much easier way than if they used their own Web site.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think people have found that Quora is different from a blog, in that people now have to think up what they think people might want to know,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo. &#8220;Here, they are given the topics and the questions, which means they are hitting areas they already know their audience is interested in.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, D&#8217;Angelo said he has wanted to turn down the spotlight on the site in recent months, as he hopes to get Quora on as solid footing as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to make a product that markets itself and not because we are big in Silicon Valley,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, we want to tone down anything that does not have to do with improving Quora itself.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps one of the reasons is the competing effort by his old pal and employer at Facebook, which launched its own Answers product soon after D&#8217;Angelo did.</p>
<p>D&#8217;Angelo declined to answer any questions related to the obvious and decidedly odd competition, although it is clear the move irks him, since it was a longtime interest Facebook was never interested in until he was and Quora attracted a giant amount of attention.</p>
<p>&#8220;There were a lot of different things I could have done [when I left Facebook]. But I felt this was an area that was completely neglected compared to other stuff,&#8221; is all D&#8217;Angelo will say.</p>
<p>Luckily for Quora, so far the Facebook Answers product has not garnered a whole lot of buzz, although D&#8217;Angelo discounted that as being a sign of Quora&#8217;s success.</p>
<p>&#8220;This thing is up to us, whether we succeed or fail is something that only we can determine,&#8221; he said.</p>

One good reason to believe the reports: Cisco <a href="http://blogs.cisco.com/news/cto-padmasree-warrior-to-lead-cisco-enterprise-commercial-and-small-biz-development-team-2/">just announced</a> that he&#8217;s leaving the company and his duties are being assumed by CTO Padmasree Warrior.</p>
<p>In Bates, a 15-year Cisco (CSCO) veteran, Skype and its new ownership get an experienced executive to guide the company as it heads toward an IPO. The unit he was leading has $20 billion in annual revenues and about 12,500 employees, and Cisco called it &#8220;the heart&#8221; of its business. While Bates&#8217;s departure is a blow, Cisco was not caught flat-footed, with the well-regarded Warrior ready to pick up the slack.</p>

<p>LUXEMBOURG, 4 October 2010 — The Board of Directors of Skype S.A., a global technology leader that enables real-time communications over the Internet, today announced that it has named Tony Bates, Senior Vice President of Cisco, as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors.</p>
<p>Mr. Bates has over 20 years of leadership experience in the communications and Internet industries, most recently as General Manager of Cisco’s Enterprise, Commercial and Small Business Division. Mr. Bates was responsible for over $20 billion of annual revenue and managed over 12,500 employees worldwide. He was the driving force behind Cisco’s three key Enterprise architectures known as Borderless Networks, DataCenter and Collaboration. <p>According to sources close to the situation, AOL has hired Alex Gounares (pictured here) as its CTO.</p>
<p>Gounares&#8217;s departure was announced internally at Microsoft (MSFT) today, where he is corporate VP of Advertising Research and Development and CTO for the software giant&#8217;s Online Services division.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/gounares/">his bio at Microsoft</a>, Gounares had previously been &#8220;corporate vice president for Corporate Strategy, where he was responsible for helping set the overall strategic direction for the company. Before that, Gounares spent three years as the technology assistant to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, and he also was responsible for helping formulate and drive the technical strategy for the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sources said he will be moving back east to take on the job at AOL (AOL). He will replace <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100125/aol-cto-cahill-out-as-it-buys-a-video-platform-company-and-opens-a-ny-tech-center">Ted Cahall</a>, who left AOL in late January.</p>

<p>Reporting directly to CEO Carol Bartz, Yahoo (YHOO) said in a statement, Irving will &#8220;lead the company&#8217;s products organization, which is responsible for the vision, strategy, design and development of Yahoo!&#8217;s global consumer and advertiser product portfolio.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, the exec many think the company desperately needs to spur innovation.</p>
<p>Irving replaces <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company">Ari Balogh</a>, who announced last week he is leaving the company as of June 3.</p>
<p>Balogh was also CTO, but Yahoo did not say who would get that title.</p>
<p>In related news, Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Yahoo Labs as chief scientist, will now report directly to Bartz.</p>
<p>The Yahoo announcement confirms a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/exclusive-yahoo-eyes-ex-microsoft-exec-blake-irving-for-top-product-and-tech-job/">post BoomTown wrote last week</a> about the company&#8217;s effort to hire Irving, a longtime Microsoft (MSFT) exec whose last job there was corporate VP of its Windows Live Platform group.</p>
<p>He left the software giant several years ago to spend time with his family and had been teaching at Pepperdine University.</p>
<p>Irving had been at Microsoft for 15 years, always commuting to its Redmond, Wash., headquarters.</p>
<p>According to his <a href="http://www.facebook.com/blakeirving?ref=ts">Facebook page</a>, Irving now lives in laid-back San Luis Obispo, midway between Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.</p>
<p>Sources said after time off, Irving had recently become eager to re-engage in the Internet sector.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long wanted to hire Irving, many said. And in nabbing him, the timing is fortuitous, as the company is in the midst of launching its massive search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft.</p>
<p>The hiring also stems the tide of Yahoo&#8217;s exec exodus. Balogh&#8217;s parting is one of many among top Yahoo execs recently. Ad sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media">Joanne Bradford</a> departed the company to join Demand Media, while longtime tech exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091103/dozen-year-yahoo-tech-veteran-ash-patel-to-take-time-off">Ash Patel</a> said he would not return from a sabbatical he took last year.</p>

<p>Irving was most recently a professor at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and Management in Malibu, California. In his prior role as corporate vice president of the Windows Live Platform group, Irving led a team of 4,000 to build and operate Microsoft&#8217;s Internet-scale services platform, advertiser and developer ecosystem. Irving also held a variety of development and general management positions at Microsoft.</p>
<p>Before joining Microsoft, Irving held development and product marketing management positions at Xerox Corp., Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. and Compaq Computer Corp. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University and a Master&#8217;s degree in business administration from Pepperdine University.</p>
<p>Raghavan joined Yahoo! in 2005, and serves as Chief Scientist and head of Yahoo! Labs. Raghavan&#8217;s research priorities include text and web mining, and algorithm design. Prior to joining Yahoo!, Raghavan was the chief technology officer at Verity and held a number of technical and managerial positions at IBM Research. Its current exec in charge, Ari Balogh (pictured here), confirmed in an interview this afternoon that he is leaving the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s probably bad timing, since we are in the midst of recharging Yahoo,&#8221; said Balogh. &#8220;But this had to do with personal priorities.&#8221;</p>
<p>By that, he was referring to personal issues in Greece, where Balogh was partially raised, related to an uncle to whom he is close. Balogh will be moving his family there this summer.</p>
<p>In a further complication, they cannot travel there by plane, because his daughter cannot fly due to issues around her hearing impairment.</p>
<p>The leading candidate for Balogh&#8217;s job at Yahoo (YHOO), said several sources, is former Microsoft (MSFT) exec Blake Irving.</p>
<p>Balogh would not comment on that, but noted Yahoo was looking at several candidates.</p>

<p>According to numerous sources, Yahoo has been seriously courting former Microsoft exec Blake Irving to take over as one of its key execs, running its product organization and essentially becoming the Internet &#8220;visionary&#8221; many think the company lacks.</p>
<p>While it is unclear if Irving has agreed to take the job, sources said Yahoo (YHOO) management was keen on him working there.</p>
<p>A Yahoo spokeswoman declined to comment when BoomTown asked about its discussions with Irving about the job.</p>
<p>I also reached out to Irving, but he has not responded.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s unclear what the move means for current CTO and Chief Product Officer Ari Balogh. But sources said Balogh has been involved in the search, and was planning on taking some time off from Yahoo or even quitting soon for personal reasons.</p>
<p>Irving, who was well liked at Microsoft (MSFT), could certainly fill Balogh&#8217;s shoes, having run major businesses there for many years in a variety of executive jobs.</p>
<p>He left Microsoft in 2007, as its corporate VP for the Windows Live Platform group, after being there for 15 years to spend some time with his family in California. Irving had always commuted to Microsoft&#8217;s Redmond, Wash. headquarters.</p>
<p>According to his <a href="http://www.facebook.com/blakeirving?ref=ts">Facebook page</a>, Irving now lives in laid-back San Luis Obispo, which is midway between Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.</p>
<p>Sources said after time off, Irving had recently become eager to reengage in the Internet sector.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long wanted to hire Irving, many said. And, if it did manage to nab Irving, the timing would also be fortuitous, since the company is in the midst of launching its massive search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft.</p>
<p>Balogh&#8217;s possible parting is one of many among top Yahoo execs recently. Ad sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media">Joanne Bradford</a> departed the company to join Demand Media, while longtime tech exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091103/dozen-year-yahoo-tech-veteran-ash-patel-to-take-time-off">Ash Patel</a> said he would not return from a sabbatical he took last year.</p>

<p>Among the many Gmail subscribers to have their private contacts exposed in the Google Buzz privacy fiasco was Andrew McLaughlin, the Obama administration’s deputy chief technology officer and Google’s former head of global public policy. </p>
<p>&#8220;So I see a big default privacy flaw in Buzz,&#8221; <a href="http://biggovernment.com/capitolconfidential/2010/03/30/google-buzz-privacy-flaw-snags-another-victim-white-house-deputy-cto-andrew-mclaughlin/">McLaughlin wrote in a Feb. 10 Buzz post uncovered by Breitbart&#8217;s Big Government</a> (click on image below to enlarge). &#8220;By default, Buzz adds the people you e-mail most as your &#8216;followers&#8217;, and then lists them on your public Google Profile Page. In other words, Google exposes the people you e-mail most, by default, to the world. That violates my sense of expectations&#8211;I expect the list of people I e-mail most to be kept private. What should I do? I guess I don’t really have an option other than turning off Buzz. Any other ideas?&#8221;</p>
<p>Sure. Here’s one: How about no longer using your former employer’s email service to communicate privately with the folks you once worked with as a lobbyist for Google?<br />
Certainly seems unwise given the mandate of the Presidential Records Act of 1978.</p>

<p>While AOL <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/01/15/aol-cto-ted-cahall-leaving/">denied a report last week suggesting that CTO Ted Cahall is leaving</a>, he actually is, um, leaving.</p>
<p><em>Oops!</em></p>
<p>Sources at AOL said the company thought Cahall (pictured here) was staying when it issued a statement saying he was not leaving. Cahall apparently had other plans.</p>
<p>AOL (AOL) CEO Tim Armstrong wrote a memo to employees this morning about Cahall&#8217;s departure and the search for a new CTO:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Ted Cahall took on the role of CTO after I had asked him to move into that position from a broader business role at the company. Ted is the person who drove the complete replacement of our publishing systems and took AOL deeper into open-source technology, among many other accomplishments. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for the work he has done. Ted has decided to move back into the business side of technology and feels it&#8217;s the right time to move on from AOL. Ted has been a strong leader at AOL and agreed to transition the company to a new CTO. We are aggressively searching for a new CTO and we believe AOL is a very attractive opportunity for the right candidate.</p></blockquote>
<p>Perhaps to defocus from the CTO-is-not-leaving-oh-yes-he-is snafu, AOL is also announcing the acquisition of StudioNow, a video creation and distribution platform, as well as the opening of a new tech center in New York, helmed by Jeff Reynar.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aol-to-name-an-ex-googler-head-of-technology-2010-1">Silicon Alley Insider reported last week</a> that AOL had hired the former Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) exec as &#8220;head of technology.&#8221;</p>
<p>Reynar&#8217;s new title is actually Head of Technology for Engineering and Products in New York.</p>
<p>Got it?</p>
<p>AOL said it would pay $36.5 million in cash and stock&#8211;with cash paid out over &#8220;multiple years&#8221;&#8211;for the Nashville-based StudioNow, its first official acquisition since spinning off from Time Warner (TWX) last year, for integration with its Seed.com content management system.</p>

<p>Reynar, 40, is the co-founder of DBT Labs, a company that built a social search service, where he was chief technology officer. He was responsible for co-founding and leading an internal startup team focused on new approaches to search including Google Squared, an experimental search tool that gathers facts from the Web and presents them in an organized collection, and Google Blog Search, among other innovations. Reynar also led the Search UI team in New York that was responsible for much of the search results page on google.com. He previously spent nearly five years at Microsoft where he was a lead program manager on the Authoring Services team that was responsible for Word.</p>
<p>&#8220;Jeff is a hands-on technology leader who is experienced in software engineering, people and product management as well as applied research. <p class="question"><em>What makes Aviary different from Adobe CS or Garage Band?</em></p>
<p>Aviary can do lots of things, but there&#8217;s nothing to install. It&#8217;s flash-based and runs right in your browser. The benefit of running that stuff in the cloud is every time you save it, it saves to our servers, and you can access it from any computer.</p>

<p>We also make it easy to do the basic edits on Aviary. Then, for example, [you could] move the project to Photoshop for more heavy-duty stuff. You can also open other peoples&#8217; works&#8211;if they haven&#8217;t made them private with a premium account&#8211;and see how they did something. We call it &#8220;creation on the fly.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>Are users ready for this?</em></p>
<p>Absolutely. We&#8217;re seeing it [cloud computing] more with Gmail; people are moving more of their applications to the Web. I think online image editing is still in its nascent stages, but it&#8217;s going to get there. [Aviary is] definitely building for the power user, the top of the pyramid, but it will trickle down.</p>
<p class="question"><em>You just completed a successful round of funding. How will Aviary expand?</em></p>
<p>Well, we&#8217;d love to get into bed with Flickr [Yahoo’s (YHOO) popular image-sharing site]. We can already pull images right from your Flickr account, and very shortly we’ll be able to push images back via their API. Currently, there’s a big hole for video editing and stuff for YouTube.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s a really, really tough problem to solve because of the file sizes involved. There is also music creation possibly, as opposed to just looping things together and adding effects.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Every geek has a memory where they saw something new and had to say to themselves, &#8220;Dang, I love living in the future.&#8221; What&#8217;s yours?</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;ll tell you exactly what it is because it really stands out. I don&#8217;t know if you&#8217;ve ever been to Wannado City in Florida. It&#8217;s a kids&#8217; amusement park that&#8217;s entirely indoors. It looks like a huge city, and the kids can do all the jobs&#8211;they can be police officers, and there&#8217;s fire trucks going back an forth that the kids can sit in, and there&#8217;s a bakery&#8211;it&#8217;s a really cool place. But what struck me as cool is that they give this bracelet to each person in the family when you walk in, and at any given moment you can walk to a kiosk, swipe your bracelet and see where anyone else in your family is in the building. I assume they are using some kind of RFID tags, but when I saw that I was like, &#8220;Wow, that’s really awesome.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>If you could change one thing about the Internet, what would it be?</em></p>
<p>The worst would have to be bad advice in tech support forums. Sometimes, I go on there, and there is just really bad advice. I look at it and think, &#8220;I could do that better.&#8221; Incompetence drives me crazy.</p>

<p>In a week, the entire advertising sales staff of MySpace will gather at a swanky new seaside resort about 20 miles south of Los Angeles to get a first glimpse of the fresh direction the company is preparing to take under its new management.</p>
<p>The beleaguered social networking site has been in the midst of an effort to reinvigorate its image, spur innovation in its product and&#8211;most of all&#8211;pull itself out of a too-long slump, even as longtime rival Facebook has seen explosive growth.</p>
<p>Now, with a new team of execs, the News Corp. (NWS) property is putting the finishing touches on a master plan, which will include a new redesign of its hopelessly messy interface and doubling down on a product strategy that will center on, said one source, &#8220;what we own&#8221;&#8211;namely, music and entertainment.</p>
<p>On the agenda, aptly enough, for the 150 ad sales employees, who will gather at Terranea in Palos Verdes, is Ben Sherwood, author of &#8220;The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life,&#8221; and founder of a <a href="http://www.thesurvivorsclub.org">Web site of the same name</a> that describes itself as &#8220;the place for surviving and thriving.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also coming to the meeting will be several bands that have successfully leveraged MySpace as a platform, to talk about their experiences and to play for the crowd.</p>
<p>And, perhaps most importantly, the group might also get to meet its new boss by then, as several sources close to the situation said that MySpace has settled on an exec to fill the key job of running its ad business.</p>
<p>While it is unclear if the deal is completely done, sources said MySpace management will announce the pick this week.</p>
<p>Sources added that MySpace has been particularly interested in one exec from Viacom (VIA) and another from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>While the sources would not name the Viacom exec, several pointed to Keith Lorizio, Microsoft VP of U.S. sales, as someone MySpace has been targeting.</p>
<p>In late August, MySpace sales and marketing head Jeff Berman left the company as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">MySpace hired MediaLink</a>, a New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, to help get its ad sales business back on track.</p>
<p>That effort has been led by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">MediaLink President Wenda Millard</a>, who is well known in the ad industry and was longtime leader of the ad sales force at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Getting an experienced top ad exec in place will round out a recent spate of new hiring by MySpace, including a new CTO, Alex Maghen, who moved over from its MySpace Music joint venture, and a new CFO, Mark Rosenbaum.</p>
<p>This has been part of a wholesale flushing out of most of the top execs who worked under co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe by new CEO Owen Van Natta.</p>

<p>Van Natta, along with COO Michael Jones and Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn, have been squirreled away since late April, working at cleaning up the company by replacing management, restructuring its various units and cutting costs, including <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next">massive layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>They have also been trying to come up with a plan to differentiate MySpace from Facebook, a good strategy since it is now well-nigh impossible for the Beverly Hills-based MySpace to catch up with the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook&#8217;s galloping growth.</p>
<p>While the whole new offering will not be rolled out prominently until at least the first quarter of next year, said several sources, some changes will begin sooner, including a gradual redesign of the site.</p>
<p>Under the new plan, said several sources, the main idea will be to shift the focus to engagement over sheer audience numbers. While MySpace is still huge, with about 70 million monthly U.S. visitors, increasing how much time they spend on the site is the goal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like numbers are not important, but the better metric for MySpace will be how involved users are,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;MySpace needs to win on minutes.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, rather than the wider and more scattershot approach of past years, the new direction being stressed is more scalable and focused.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not about getting everyone and their mothers on MySpace,&#8221; said a source, &#8220;but about being a better site to those here.&#8221;</p>
<p>That will include  stressing &#8220;ownership&#8221; of online categories, which for MySpace are music and entertainment, with the hope that advertisers will be attracted to more engaged users.</p>
<p>Unlike Facebook, which is often described as a utility platform for communications between friends, sources said MySpace will be aimed more at being a platform for communities of interest.</p>
<p>That includes using tools from other companies, such as MySpace&#8217;s recent two-way synch with Twitter, the hot microblogging service, to link those communities.</p>
<p>Presumably, the company&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/sale-of-ilike-to-myspace-135-million-in-cash-6-million-for-talent-retention-delayed-over-tax-issues-reallyplus-the-list-of-other-suitors">August purchase of iLike</a>, the social music start-up, is also part of that plan.</p>
<p>&#8220;Instead of the ability to just connect friend to friend in a single social graph, this will be about connecting a person to their communities of passion and interest and to others like them anywhere,&#8221; said one source.</p>
<p>Music is the obvious key leverage point, the still-bright spot of MySpace, followed by adding big entertainment categories like movies, television, gaming, video and other pop culture arenas.</p>

<p>&#8220;MySpace should represent pop culture online to customers and advertisers,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The core strength has always been music and that is where the site will really excel, because it binds customers to the service.&#8221;</p>
<p>The even heavier music focus on the main juggernaut site, noted several sources, does create an odd situation with MySpace Music, the separate joint venture the site has with music labels to create a massive music community.</p>
<p>While sources do not think News Corp. will attempt to suck MySpace Music back into the main site, due to the complex partnership issues, the idea is to make them even more deeply integrated and to sell them to advertisers as one powerful marketing message.</p>
<p>In any case, several sources noted that one of the most successful parts of the new plan has been to convince News Corp. leaders that MySpace does not have to beat Facebook to be successful.</p>
<p>Sooner than later, of course, MySpace has to do just that.</p>
<p>Will it work? Who knows, but said one source close to the situation quite correctly:</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no silver bullet for MySpace&#8211;it just has to climb back step by step.&#8221;</p>

<p>BoomTown went to visit the HQ of Adobe in San Francisco several weeks ago for a chit-chat with its CTO, Kevin Lynch.</p>
<p>We had a lovely discussion about the future of its Flash video technology, as well as of its more recent AIR offering.</p>
<p>Lynch also discussed smart phones and other such devices, although he <em>somehow</em> neglected to mention the then-pending purchase of Omniture (OMTR) by Adobe (ADBE).</p>
<p>That would be the $1.8 billion the company said last week it would fork over for the Web measurement business.</p>
<p>Reaction to the deal has ranged from mixed to <em>WTF</em>? And some consider it an attempt to&#8211;as one smart exec put it to me&#8211;&#8220;buy revenue,&#8221; even as Adobe&#8217;s other businesses face major challenges ahead.</p>
<p>While the iconic company&#8217;s Photoshop and Acrobat software offerings dominate the Web publishing business, Adobe must still deal with the increasing move of all software into the cloud and onto non-PC devices.</p>
<p>And&#8211;with Microsoft (MSFT) continuing to aggressively push its own Silverlight online video technology and other companies like Google (GOOG) likely to have more to say in the arena&#8211;even the Flash business, which is now installed on more than 90 percent of Web-enabled PCs, will be more challenging than ever.</p>
<p>Lots to think about, so here is Lynch in a video interview:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It may not be the Cabinet-level post that some were hoping for, but President Obama finally named the U.S.’s first chief technology officer on Saturday morning during his weekly radio and Internet address.</p>
<p>Aneesh Chopra, currently Virginia’s secretary of technology, got the nod and will soon join his former colleague Vivek Kundra, the national chief information officer, on a team tasked with using technology to make government more efficient. “Aneesh will promote technological innovation to help achieve our most urgent priorities&#8211;from creating jobs and reducing health care costs to keeping our nation secure,” Obama said in his Saturday radio address.</p>
<p>“Aneesh and Jeffrey [Zients, the newly appointed chief innovation officer] will work closely with our chief information officer, Vivek Kundra, who is responsible for setting technology policy across the government, and using technology to improve security, ensure transparency, and lower costs,” he said. During the campaign, the high tech community buzzed about who might fill the CTO slot, which the campaign suggested would be cabinet-level position.</p>

<p>You must know by now how much BoomTown loves internal Yahoo (YHOO) memos. But this is getting ridiculous.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been like a flash flood after a long drought at Sunnyvale HQ today, as Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz turns on the fire hose of a whole lot of communicating.</p>
<p>A lot. <em>A real lot</em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;I know you guys have reorg fatigue,&#8221; wrote Bartz, in the latest email to employees about the management reorganization finally announced this morning.</p>
<p>Also memo fatigue at <strong>All Things Digital</strong> HQ, if you can believe it.</p>
<p>Okay, I give, Carol! Well, for now, until another juicy internal memo you aren&#8217;t handing out freely lands in my inbox, for example, such as one about a search deal with Microsoft (MSFT). I&#8217;d like one of those to go, please!</p>
<p>But, in a gesture of a leak-free peace (can the drop-kick bounty be suspended for just today?), I am posting this last memo about the management reorganization from Carol &#8220;Chatterbox&#8221; Bartz.</p>
<p>(Although, I wish she would stop insulting the press, as she does below again. We are just doing our job&#8211;and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones/"><em>very</em> accurately, as it turned out</a>&#8211;yet the jibes continue. Which is odd, frankly, given that Bartz has had mostly glowing coverage in the media her entire career.)</p>
<p>But Bartz did seem to leave a little mystery in the email still, as if even more rearranging were to come.</p>
<p>Writes Bartz (my bolding):</p>
<p>&#8220;As soon as decisions were made, I wanted you to know about them&#8211;<strong>even if that means we don&#8217;t have all the details nailed down yet&#8221;</strong>.</p>
<p>Wait, are the deets all nailed by Bartz&#8217;s productive hammer or aren&#8217;t they?</p>
<p>At least, thankfully, the note is capitalized properly, unlike the quaint no-caps stylings of former CEO Jerry Yang.</p>

<p>Yahoos,</p>
<p>As I&#8217;ve gotten to know Yahoo! over the past several weeks, I&#8217;ve developed a point of view on how our organization should be structured to set us up for success.</p>
<p>Our goal is simple: to consistently deliver awesome consumer and advertiser experiences, everywhere in the world we do business. Delivering great customer experiences is everyone&#8217;s job at Yahoo!&#8211;and each part of our organization will have a clear role in making that happen every day.</p>
<p>The timing of this announcement is important. As soon as decisions were made, I wanted you to know about them&#8211;even if that means we don&#8217;t have all the details nailed down yet. Yes, there&#8217;s been a lot of speculation in the media over the past few days&#8230;that&#8217;s been a little frustrating, but I&#8217;m not willing to speak publicly about decisions before they&#8217;re final. Today, they are&#8211;so I&#8217;ll lay out our new organizational structure for you now.</p>
<p>I know you guys have reorg fatigue. Hang in there&#8211;our intention is to leave this structure in place for two to four years. We&#8217;ll continue to make adjustments as needed, but we expect this core structure to stay put.</p>
<p>The structure outlined below will enable us to make big improvements in our product quality and operational efficiency. Part of that is simplicity&#8211;I&#8217;m frankly amazed at how complicated some things are here! We&#8217;ll have much clearer decision making and accountability. Product and regional teams will share responsibility for revenue targets and expense management, but we&#8217;ll have one P&#038;L, for which I&#8217;m accountable.</p>
<p>We will also be in a better position to really listen to and understand our customers&#8211;both consumers and advertisers. I think we&#8217;ve gotten into the habit of focusing internally too much and we sometimes forget who we&#8217;re here to serve. You&#8217;ll notice that our management structure puts a renewed focus on the customer, with stronger feedback loops across the company…and they all come through me.</p>
<p>Also, as you know, no organizational structure is a substitute for collaboration, communication and trust. We&#8217;ll all need to evolve our behavior a bit&#8211;as teams and as individuals – to make this structure work the way it&#8217;s designed.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s the overview, with the roles that will report directly to me. As you&#8217;ll see, some of our leaders are still to be determined. I know you&#8217;ll<br />

<p>Products: We&#8217;ve combined Tech and Product groups under one roof, led by Ari Balogh as EVP Products &#038; CTO. Ari&#8217;s charter is to deliver global products that enable extraordinary consumer and advertiser experiences. Ari&#8217;s direct reports now include one leader for each product group&#8211;we&#8217;ve taken care of the &#8220;two in a box&#8221; problem.</p>
<p>One important note: The Connected Life team has been integrated into various parts of the new organization. Our mobile strategy remains a key part of Yahoo!&#8217;s focus going forward and all of our product groups will own mobile innovations. After leading Connected Life for four years, Marco Boerries has resigned from the company to spend more time with his family in Europe. We thank Marco for his important contributions at Yahoo!.</p>
<p>Regions: There are now two: North America and International. As I&#8217;ve said before, international growth is critical for Yahoo!, which has become too reliant on its U.S. business over the years.</p>
<p>The regions deliver Yahoo!&#8217;s products, programming and services to consumers, partners and advertisers in local markets. They will partner closely with the newly formed Regional Solutions &#038; Products group in Ari&#8217;s organization to help drive a significant shift in how Yahoo! develops products for different geographies. The goal is to have global platforms on which regional product offerings are based.</p>
<p>The North American region&#8211;comprised of the U.S. and Canada&#8211;is led by Hilary Schneider. The leader of our International region, to be hired soon, will be responsible for a cohesive Yahoo! global strategy and seizing our international growth opportunities. Until we determine who&#8217;ll lead the International region, Rose Tsou (Asia), Rich Riley (Europe) and Keith Nilsson (Emerging Markets) will continue to report to me.</p>
<p>Marketing: Elisa Steele will be joining Yahoo! as our Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), effective March 23. Elisa joins us from NetApp where she was SVP, Corporate Marketing. Previous to NetApp, she held executive positions in marketing at Sun Microsystems. Elisa will oversee our global marketing strategy and provide direction for our marketing function. She&#8217;ll bring together the various Yahoo! marketing teams that have been spread across the company. Reporting into Elisa will be Brand Marketing, Audience Marketing, Corporate Communications, Insights, Policy &#038; Privacy, Community Affairs and related central teams. I&#8217;m delighted to have Elisa joining the team.</p>
<p>Customer Advocacy: As I said, we can do much better in hearing the voice of the customer across Yahoo!, and incorporating what we hear into all of our work day-to-day. We have opened a search for a leader, who will oversee Customer Care and Ad Operations globally with the goal of improving how we support Yahoo!&#8217;s users and advertisers. In the interim, these teams will continue to report to Hilary.</p>
<p>Service Engineering &#038; Operations: This new team is responsible for delivering common technology services at scale, including application management and infrastructure. No matter how cool our products are, the customer&#8217;s experience won&#8217;t be great unless our applications consistently deliver. Note that we&#8217;re bringing Service Engineering together as one group because these engineers bring expertise that is best applied horizontally. Leading this organization is David Dibble, who joined Yahoo! in December. David&#8217;s team also will be accountable for delivering more effective corporate IT systems.</p>
<p>Corporate Functions: Blake Jorgensen will be leaving Yahoo! and I am searching for a new CFO. Blake will remain through a transition with his successor, and I want to thank Blake for all of his great contributions to Yahoo! over the past two years. Mike Callahan will continue to lead our Legal team, and David Windley leads our Human Resources function. Joel Jones joins the team as my Chief of Staff.</p>
<p>So that&#8217;s the high-level view. These changes are effective immediately, but we&#8217;ve got more work to do in filling out the structure of each group. In the short term, this transition will be challenging for many of our people. My executive staff will be working with their organizations as quickly as possible to create further clarity. For example, we&#8217;ll need to recast budgets and adjust work areas so we have the right people working side-by-side.</p>
<p>I want to thank all of you who&#8217;ve shared your ideas and views with me since I arrived. Several leaders across Yahoo! came together to design this new structure&#8211;I&#8217;ve been very impressed with their dedication to the right outcomes, particularly how they&#8217;ve embraced the need to eliminate the silos that have been a drag on this organization for so long.</p>
<p>I think this organizational structure has the potential to solve many of the issues you&#8217;ve helped me better understand. Of course, new issues will emerge. But I know we&#8217;ll be aligned and nimble in tackling them together.</p>
<p>This is a tremendous, proud company with a powerful brand, great products and a bright future. Now&#8217;s the time to get more focused than ever on delighting our users and advertisers. Let&#8217;s show them how great Yahoo! can be.</p>

<p>On Friday, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">BoomTown first reported that new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is likely to be announcing a sweeping new management structure</a> soon, which can only mean the possibility that some existing top execs are likely to be broomed out, even as some new ones are ushered in.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is going to be a full-scale peanut butter recall,&#8221; joked one exec, referring to the infamous <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080627/a-garlinghouse-memorial-boomtown-decodes-the-infamous-peanut-butter-manifesto/">&#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221;</a> which was sent around the company several years ago by former exec Brad Garlinghouse. <p>But the reorganization of Yahoo&#8217;s top-heavy management structures&#8211;I once dubbed it the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070928/day-73-the-sleepy-attack-of-the-yahoo-vice-presidents/">&#8220;attack of the Yahoo vice presidents&#8221;</a>&#8211;will be a bit sticky, given all the (slow-)moving parts at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Bartz signaled a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/carol-bartz-friday-memos-chick-flicks-the-need-for-speed-and-wow-also-here-comes-the-rerorg/">&#8220;big week&#8221; ahead in one internal memo</a> I obtained, which was sent out Friday.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s to come?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a rough primer, based on talking to numerous sources inside and outside of Yahoo:</p>
<p><strong>The Basics:</strong></p>
<p>In order to start to revive Yahoo, Bartz is likely to impose a more top-down management style on the hopelessly confusing <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090209/will-tough-talking-bartz-reorg-yahoo-soon-and-finally-blue-pill-the-matrix/">&#8220;matrix&#8221; organization now in place</a> at the company.</p>
<p>She has spent the last six weeks touring Yahoo, getting to see a lot of presentations on its many, many products and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090210/bartz-holds-first-exec-offsite-as-the-yahoos-turn-and-twist-in-the-wind/">conducting a whirlwind of meetings with execs</a>.</p>
<p>Broadly, most expect Bartz to severely roll back a variety of previous reorganizations done by former CEO Jerry Yang and outgoing President Sue Decker, in order to impose more centralized control over the place and focus it more narrowly.</p>
<p>Presumably, lattes&#8211;paid for by Yang and co-founder David Filo&#8211;will remain free.</p>
<p><strong>Out With the Old:</strong></p>
<p>There&#8217;s no question that Yahoo is going to see the departure of several top execs, along with the elevation of others.</p>

<p>Among those who are more likely to be definitely in, though, is CTO Ari Balogh (pictured here), a relatively recent hire who has been a popular exec within Yahoo.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123532397353742621.html">Wall Street Journal first noted the possible rise of Balogh</a> in a follow-up piece to this column&#8217;s story on the overall reorg over the weekend, noting that he would become head of product.</p>
<p>Presumably, Balogh will be one of the point men on what to do about search, in the should-I-stay-or-should-I-sell-now debate that never seems to end at Yahoo.</p>
<p>One interesting idea floating around Yahoo is that he becomes head of all its products, as well as continuing to run its tech arm.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a good idea, since Yahoo has desperately needed an empowered leader under Bartz, who focuses like a laser beam on products.</p>
<p>&#8220;It all starts with that,&#8221; said one former exec. &#8220;One single person has to be the champion of what Yahoo makes.&#8221;</p>
<p>But what does that mean for Ash Patel, EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Audience Product Division? Well, the longtime Yahoo veteran could now report to Balogh (he had previously reported to Decker directly) or, presumably, leave.</p>
<p>Patel&#8217;s fate, of course, impacts that of many others, such as Front Doors head Tapan Bhat, who is in charge of a major homepage redesign that Bartz just delayed the launch of to make it better.</p>
<p>Venkat Panchapakesan, EVP of the Audience Technology Group, seems safer, given that he reports to Balogh already and is responsible for the company&#8217;s overall product technology and platform strategy, such as its open efforts.</p>
<p>Also safer than not is General Counsel Michael Callahan, as well as U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>But Schneider&#8217;s purview might change a bit if U.S. advertising sales head Joanne Bradford&#8211;who now reports to her&#8211;is elevated to a higher position or if sales is taken out from under Schneider.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not a stretch to imagine Bartz wanting more control of the part of Yahoo that brings in the bucks.</p>
<p>The fate of Connected Life Division EVP Marco Boerries is dicier&#8211;think Yahoo mobile and other devices&#8211;as it is for CFO Blake Jorgensen and David Windley, who heads human resources.</p>
<p>Both Jorgensen and Windley were favored by Decker, which does not necessarily make them goners. But both are in jobs on which Bartz will have to rely much more, so she might want her own choices in place.</p>

<p>Boerries (pictured here), a talented but more freewheeling exec under Yang, is another question all together. Already wealthy from selling several companies, the entrepreneurial exec is most often mentioned by sources as someone unlikely to stick around, especially if Bartz tries to rein him in more. (In addition, Boerries has family issues requiring that he spend a lot of time in his native Germany.)</p>
<p>As to the many Yahoo SVPs and VPs? Let&#8217;s just say it is likely there will be many fewer of them, as Bartz cuts, consolidates, simplifies and centralizes divisions more.</p>
<p><strong>In With the New:</strong></p>
<p>One hire that is definitely coming is a new chief of marketing to take over Yahoo&#8217;s brand, as well as its PR function. Yahoo has not had that kind of powerful exec in a long time, and it is more likely Bartz will go for an outside star here.</p>

<p>One outside name skittering around Yahoo for the role is John Vail (pictured here), director of interactive marketing for Pepsi-Cola North America, who knows Yahoo well.</p>
<p>(An obvious internal candidate for the job would be Yahoo&#8217;s Global Brand Marketing SVP, Allen Olivo, who could hit the road if not selected.)</p>
<p>Also a possibility is adding a COO with more Web experience to come in to help Bartz. There are plenty of candidates for that job all over the Internet sector.</p>
<p>But Bartz seems to be the kind of exec who favors flying solo and having key execs report to her to keep a finger on the pulse of a company. She is most definitely not going to have an entourage around her.</p>
<p>In fact, said one person familiar with the situation: &#8220;It&#8217;s long past time for new plumbing, and [Bartz] seems ready to flush a lot out that has long needed to go.&#8221;</p>

<p>With the naming of Oracle (ORCL) President Charles Phillips to President Barack Obama&#8217;s 16-Member Economic Recovery Advisory Board a few days ago, another Silicon Valley tech mandarin fell off the list to become America&#8217;s first chief technology officer.</p>
<p>The job&#8211;which was promised by President Barack Obama during his campaign and underscored when he released a memorandum on transparency and open government that outlined some of the CTO duties the day after he was sworn in&#8211;remains unfilled.</p>
<p>In fact, so does the Federal Communications Commission chairman&#8217;s post, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090113/genachowski-to-head-fcc-maybe-he-can-finally-fix-my-broadband/">insiders said a month ago would go to former IAC/InterActiveCorp (IACI) exec Julius Genachowski</a>. But he has not been nominated yet.</p>
<p>Both Genachowski and Phillips were on a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122671335356430343.html">short list floated in November by The Wall Street Journal</a> for CTO. The third name on it, Level 3 (LVLT) exec Don Gips, has since been named to a high-level White House job.</p>
<p>While the continuing economic crisis has sucked all the oxygen from the room, the Obama administration has still made a lot of promises about tech issues, from improving broadband to making the government more transparent and digital.</p>
<p>So, who is getting the job as head geek?</p>
<p>Could it be well-known entrepreneur Mitch Kapor? Google (GOOG) guru-in-resident and Internet father Vint Cerf? Or some other tech-savvy Silicon Valley figure?</p>
<p>BoomTown is, of course, rooting for Steve &#8220;Woz&#8221; Wozniak. Once <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090209/nerdy-dancing-all-that-woz/">he wins &#8220;Dancing With the Stars&#8221; this season</a>, he will be the only nerd capable of the two-stepping one needs to survive in Washington.</p>

<p>And, until someone is appointed to fix the nation&#8217;s computers, here is the <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/TransparencyandOpenGovernment/">Jan. 21 memo Obama released</a> about some of the tasks ahead for America&#8217;s CTO:</p>
<p><em>MEMORANDUM FOR THE HEADS OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES</p>
<p>SUBJECT: Transparency and Open Government</p>
<p>My Administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in Government.</p>
<p><strong>Government should be transparent.</strong> Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their Government is doing. Information maintained by the Federal Government is a national asset. My Administration will take appropriate action, consistent with law and policy, to disclose information rapidly in forms that the public can readily find and use. Executive departments and agencies should harness new technologies to put information about their operations and decisions online and readily available to the public. Executive departments and agencies should also solicit public feedback to identify information of greatest use to the public.</p>
<p><strong>Government should be participatory.</strong> Public engagement enhances the Government’s effectiveness and improves the quality of its decisions. Knowledge is widely dispersed in society, and public officials benefit from having access to that dispersed knowledge. Executive departments and agencies should offer Americans increased opportunities to participate in policymaking and to provide their Government with the benefits of their collective expertise and information. Executive departments and agencies should also solicit public input on how we can increase and improve opportunities for public participation in Government.</p>
<p><strong>Government should be collaborative.</strong> Collaboration actively engages Americans in the work of their Government. Executive departments and agencies should use innovative tools, methods, and systems to cooperate among themselves, across all levels of Government, and with nonprofit organizations, businesses, and individuals in the private sector. Executive departments and agencies should solicit public feedback to assess and improve their level of collaboration and to identify new opportunities for cooperation.</p>
<p>I direct the Chief Technology Officer, in coordination with the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Administrator of General Services, to coordinate the development by appropriate executive departments and agencies, within 120 days, of recommendations for an Open Government Directive, to be issued by the Director of OMB, that instructs executive departments and agencies to take specific actions implementing the principles set forth in this memorandum. The independent agencies should comply with the Open Government Directive.</p>
<p>This memorandum is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by a party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.</p>

<p>Barack Obama has yet to announce who his chief technology officer will be. But he has hired a Silicon Valley exec for another role: Google product manager Katie Jacobs Stanton will be the new President&#8217;s &#8220;director of citizen participation,&#8221; starting in March, sources tell me.</p>
<p>What the job entails isn&#8217;t completely clear to me, but I gather that she plans on using Web tools to let, well, citizens participate in the Obama White House.</p>
<p>The model: Google&#8217;s &#8220;Moderator&#8221; tool, which let people submit questions for the Presidential debates, and was later used to let them suggest initiatives for the new administration via its Change.gov site.</p>
<p>No surprise, then, that Google Moderator was one of Stanton&#8217;s projects when she worked at Google&#8217;s elections group.</p>
<p>Per her <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/ppl/webprofile?action=vmi&amp;id=7293768&amp;authToken=Dccl&amp;authType=name&amp;trk=ppro_viewmore&amp;lnk=vw_pprofile">LinkedIn</a> bio, she&#8217;s also worked on Google Finance and Google&#8217;s Open Social initiative. And prior to joining Google (GOOG) in 2003 (which means she came on pre-IPO and is fully vested, if you&#8217;re doing the math), she was at Yahoo (YHOO) as a production manager and worked in Yahoo Finance.</p>

<p>Is it just me or does the fact that President-Elect Barack Obama is broadcasting his weekly address on YouTube not seem like it should be the very biggest deal in the world?</p>
<p>Still, when an <a href="http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/11/14/the_youtube_presidency.html">article in the Washington Post</a> reported late last week that he would put his weekly Democratic address online in video&#8211;on YouTube and his own transition site, Change.gov&#8211;as well as the regular radio, the squeals from tech were louder than at a mall appearance by the Zac Efron of &#8220;High School Musical.&#8221;</p>
<p>While it is a first for the Commander-in-Chief, I am more depressed that it <em>is</em> a first&#8211;after all, skateboarding cats made it to YouTube eons ago&#8211;than utterly thrilled that he is doing it.</p>
<p>But, when it come to the glacial movement related to politicians and tech issues, disappointment seems to be a better stance than hope.</p>
<p>I could begin with the fact that the U.S. has poor broadband and wireless coverage compared with most comparable nations (Softbank&#8217;s Masa Son once told me in an interview that this country was the &#8220;third world of broadband&#8221;).</p>
<p>Ironically, the price of high-speed access ranks at the top, by <em>really</em> gross margins.</p>
<p>Or that the federal government remains unfocused on a number of important digital issues, from immigration to privacy to net neutrality.</p>
<p>Perhaps because of his more obvious use of Internet tools, from communicating to supporters to raising money to targeting voters, Obama has felt like the first true Internet candidate, well beyond the ultimately unsuccessful inroads made by Howard Dean in 2004.</p>
<p>And now with even more YouTube videos, the Twitters, a much more interactive Web site at Change.gov and, best of all, the possible appointment of a CTO for America, it has been a general lovefest that the Obama presidency has engendered from the Internet community, simply for the focus the sector is now getting.</p>
<p>And more interactive communications are promised, such as regular video interviews with senior members of the Obama administration.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just one of many ways that he will communicate directly with the American people and make the White House and the political process more transparent,&#8221; spokeswoman Jen Psaki said to the Washington Post.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not that BoomTown does not think this is a great thing, but to me, this kind of transparent communication should be as normal as it has become throughout the rest of society as a matter of course.</p>
<p>Also, it would be nice if the Obama videos were also distributed on many other video services besides YouTube, which is the largest, but owned by Google (GOOG), whose CEO Eric Schmidt is a prominent supporter of the new administration.</p>
<p>Still, the four-minute video that Obama released yesterday is a good first step, along with a previous one from transition Co-Chairman Valerie Jarrett, who recorded a two-minute video earlier in the week.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s been nary a week since an econalypse-brutalized Dell (DELL) began offering workers <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081104/well-this-should-do-wonders-for-dell-customer-service/">voluntary separation plans</a>, and Kettler is apparently leading the charge to take the company up on it. CNET News reports that he plans to <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10095308-92.html">leave the computer maker in January</a> to &#8220;focus on his family and his many interests beyond Dell.&#8221;</p>
<p><strike>Interestingly, Kettler&#8217;s Dell bio appears to be one step ahead of the CTO as he heads for the door. It&#8217;s already been removed from <a href="http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/about_dell/company/leadership/executive_team?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=corp&amp;~ck=anavml">Dell&#8217;s executive team Web page</a>.</strike></p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> A Dell spokesperson writes in to say that in his role as chief technology officer, Kettler is not a member of the Dell Executive Leadership Team. Which explains why his bio doesn&#8217;t appear on the executive team Web page. Still, a curious omission. From his bio, one would assume Kettler would be just the sort of guy Dell would want helping to determine its strategic direction:</p>

<p>With all the Yahoo (YHOO) reorganization noise this past week&#8211;full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, if you want to go all literary!&#8211;BoomTown had little time to post our video on <a href="http://www.gigaom.com">GigaOm</a>&#8216;s Om Malik&#8217;s <a href="http://events.gigaom.com/structure/08/">Structure 08</a> conference on Wednesday.</p>
<p>Held at the spanking new Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco, it was high-wonk, packed with CTOs and those involved in building the guts of the Internet and its infrastructure, whose jobs are becoming more complicated than ever as Internet usage booms.</p>
<p>Malik thinks this unprecedented growth is putting a lot of stress on the system, akin to the physical wear-and-tear our nation&#8217;s roads and bridges are under.</p>
<p>As he wrote: &#8220;The platforms on which we have done business for over a decade are starting to provide diminishing returns; the smart money, meanwhile, is seeking new platform structures.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, lots of talk about how to manage the potential crisis, such as the move toward cloud computing, databases in the sky and other stuff that is way, <em>way</em> over BoomTown&#8217;s head.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, we press on, because it is our solemn duty to understand dark fiber someday soon.</p>
