HP Reverses Hurd-Era Pay Cuts, Unveils Benefits

After a rocky start, new Hewlett-Packard Co. Chief Executive Officer Leo Apotheker is trying to settle into his role with a Thanksgiving gift for his employees. During HP’s earnings call on Monday, Apotheker announced that the company was reversing pay cuts for a majority of the employees affected by a February 2009 salary-reduction plan under former CEO Mark Hurd.

Adobe Sacks Nine Percent of Workforce

Add Adobe to the fast-growing list of tech companies sacking employees in November. In an 8-K filing today with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Adobe said it will cut nine percent of its workforce–approximately 680 jobs.

Ugly news. The end of Sun Microsystems as an independent company after 27 years is to be prefaced with a bloodletting. And a big one too. The company is sacking some 3,000 employees as it awaits the closing of Oracle’s planned $7.4 billion takeover.

New York Times to Sack 100 Staffers

If newspapers are suffering a death by 1000 cuts, the next 100 will be made at the New York Times. The company today announced plans to reduce its newsroom staff by eight percent by the end of 2009. Cuts will be made by buyout, but the company will resort to layoffs should its hand be forced.

Condé Cuts Continue: 15 at Digital, More to Come

Condé Nast, which shuttered four magazines this week, said it won’t be cutting any more titles. But that won’t be the last of its cuts: The publisher is looking to cut costs by roughly 25 percent at all the magazines it publishes, likely leading to layoffs in many cases. Today’s example doesn’t come from a magazine per se, but from the company’s digital group, which let go of “more than” 15 people, Expect more to come from Condé, and from other publishers, in coming weeks.

Product Management, Engineering and UI Design for Yahoo News Moving to Taiwan

In a risky but interesting move that has some at the company nervous and others excited, Yahoo is in the process of moving key development responsibility for its juggernaut Yahoo News unit to Taiwan. Under the new system, product management, engineering and user interface design for one of Yahoo’s flagship properties will become the responsibility of staffers there. Editorial employees for Yahoo News–which is the No. 1 news site on the Web with 48.4 unique monthly visitors, according to comScore data –will remain in the U.S., largely located at its Santa Monica, Calif., office. Yahoo confirmed the change to BoomTown yesterday.
