<p>According to sources close to the situation, Yahoo has instituted a hiring freeze across the company and is considering a reduction in force in support units of the company. </p>
<p>While the details of any layoffs &#8212; which are expected to be small and selective for now &#8212; are still being worked out, sources said that the stricture not to fill hundreds of open positions is the first step toward significant cost-cutting initiatives across the Silicon Valley Internet giant, in the wake of what it expects to be another weak quarterly report next week and a looming proxy fight.</p>
<p>Yahoo reports its fourth quarter earnings Tuesday. While the company has managed to improve the results in the last part of the quarter, sources said they will still show continued weakness in its key businesses and consumer usage.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s as competitors such as Google and Facebook have been showing significant growth, especially in the display advertising market.</p>
<p>Thus, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120104/confirmed-yahoo-names-paypal-head-scott-thompson-as-new-head/">new Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson</a> appears to be zeroing in on costs and managing for margins, said multiple sources, much as his predecessor Carol Bartz did at the start of her tenure.</p>
<p>But many think Yahoo needs even more drastic changes, including massive cuts in staff and also product arenas, to give the company new life.</p>
<p>That includes shifts in leadership at the top levels too. In a major move this week, co-founder <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120117/jerry-yangs-decision-to-leave-yahoo-was-his-own-even-if-it-was-inevitable/">Jerry Yang stepped down</a> from the company&#8217;s board and all roles there. More <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120117/sources-four-more-board-members-will-be-following-yang-out-the-door/">directors are expected to leave</a> soon, too.</p>
<p>That will likely come after <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120109/yahapocalypse-now-q4-results-proxy-fight-board-hijinks-and-asia-solution-combine-for-busy-month-for-yahoo/">negotiations to sell part of its lucrative stakes</a> in both the Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan are successfully completed.</p>
<p>While not a certainty, Yahoo&#8217;s board hopes that will happen sometime before <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120109/come-west-daniel-loeb-a-silicon-valley-visit-as-as-yahoos-activist-shareholder-mulls-proxy-fight/">activist shareholder Daniel Loeb initiates a proxy battle</a> against the company in the coming month. </p>
<p>Sound complex? </p>
<p>It is, and also troubling to Yahoo&#8217;s long beleaguered rank and file, who have been <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120110/yahoo-employees-fear-layoffs-as-thompson-brings-new-vision/">worried about more layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>The Yahoo troops have been under intense pressure and have suffered from ongoing attrition. Just yesterday, for example, Yahoo lost one of its top advertising execs, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120118/yahoo-loses-top-sales-exec-to-amazon/">Seth Dallaire</a>, to Amazon.</p>
<p>The company can ill afford such departures of key talent, even as it seeks to pare employee numbers in other parts of its business.</p>
<p>At the end of its last quarter, Yahoo reported that it had 13,700 staffers, down from 14,100 in the previous year. </p>
<p>Yahoo, of course, declined comment. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Myspace&#8211;the long-troubled social networking site turned social entertainment hub&#8211;is in the midst of planning that could soon result in significant layoffs of its staff, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.</p>
<p>That number could be as much as 50 percent of the 1,100 employees at Myspace, largely based in the U.S., but also in international locations.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/myspace-logo-Bracket-275x57.jpg" alt="" title="myspace-logo-Bracket-275x57" width="275" height="57" class="alignright size-full wp-image-1824" /></p>
<p>While the decision of what cuts to make to its employee base have not been made yet, nearly the entire Myspace staff was given the last week of December off from work to save money. <strong>Update</strong>: <em>Myspace tells us via email the week off was an employee perk, not a cost-cutting measure.</em></p>
<p>Sources stressed that management was still working out the details of more drastic cost-cutting measures that owner News Corp. has been wanting from Myspace, as its revenues and traffic have declined.</p>
<p>The layoffs are also part of a larger rethink about the future of the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based company, which has had many difficulties in recent years, including several leadership upheavals and a talent drain, as well as stagnant growth.</p>
<p>Among the many options contemplated has been the sale of the Myspace unit, as has been widely reported. According to sources, Jack Kennedy, EVP of operations for News Corp. Digital Media, has been tapped to explore the sale of Myspace.</p>
<p>Until now, both large-scale cost-cutting and exploration of an acquisition were on hold as Myspace <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/the-my-fill-in-the-space-reset-is-here-as-social-network-morphs-into-entertainment-hub/">launched its redesign as an entertainment hub</a>, which was rolled out about six weeks ago.</p>
<p>Myspace also recently started <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101118/myspace-a-place-for-facebook-friends/">user account integration with former foe Facebook</a>.</p>
<p>And the company also <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101130/myspace-modernizes-mobile-site-and-app/">revamped its mobile offerings</a> and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101216/google-myspace-finally-land-new-ad-deal/">signed a new search advertising deal with Google</a> (at which time MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka predicted layoffs were around the corner).</p>
<p>But, according to many inside and outside the company, the redesign and strategy moves are not expected to result in a major turnaround of Myspace. Meanwhile, the piles of money the company once got from its Google relationship have also gotten much smaller. It&#8217;s not much of a surprise that News Corp. is moving to remedy the situation now.</p>

<p>In fact, during News Corp.&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101103/news-corp-earnings-in-line/">earnings call in November</a>, COO Chase Carey called attention to Myspace&#8217;s ever-weakening performance and said &#8220;current losses are not acceptable or sustainable.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added: &#8220;We judge in quarters, not in years.&#8221;</p>
<p>At this point, a sale would be the likeliest save for the media giant.</p>
<p>One juicy rumor that has been going around suggests Facebook game-maker Zynga as a potential acquirer of Myspace. While the two companies had discussed closer ties in the past&#8211;back when Zynga COO Owen Van Natta was still CEO of Myspace&#8211;those talks went nowhere.</p>
<p>Several sources said a private equity buyer for Myspace is now the likeliest outcome if the online property is sold.</p>
<p>Myspace declined to comment on layoffs or acquisition talks.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After a rocky start, new Hewlett-Packard Co. Chief Executive Officer Leo Apotheker is trying to settle into his role with a Thanksgiving gift for his employees.</p>
<p>During HP&#8217;s earnings call on Monday, Apotheker announced that the company was reversing pay cuts for a majority of the employees affected by a February 2009 salary-reduction plan under former CEO Mark Hurd.</p>
<p>HP also reinstated a company 401(k) plan matching contributions as a fixed benefit, and instituted a new share-ownership plan that would allow employees to buy company shares at a five percent discount.</p>
<p>&#8220;HP employees are a highly competitive group who want to win,&#8221; Apotheker said on a call with analysts. &#8220;They also want to be rewarded for their performance&#8230;.I believe in the performance-driven culture, and our employees have been performing.&#8221;</p>
<p>The moves appear aimed at lifting the morale of a company that’s been reeling from yet another turbulent leadership transition, and helping Apotheker feel more welcome at the iconic Silicon Valley company once admired for its employee-friendly culture.</p>

In an <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/796343/000110465909064037/a09-33303_18k.htm">8-K filing made today with the Securities and Exchange Commission</a>, the company said it will cut nine percent of its workforce, approximately 680 jobs, to better cope with flaccid demand for its software.  </p>
<p>Cuts at Adobe (ADBE) will occur worldwide and are intended to bring costs in line with its 2010 budget and &#8220;the realities of the business environment,&#8221; the company said in a statement. They follow <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081203/adobe-announces-q4-morale-reduction/">a similar round of cuts made in 2008 that claimed the livelihoods of about 600 people</a>.</p>

And a big one too. The company is sacking some 3,000 employees as it awaits the closing of Oracle&#8217;s (ORCL) planned $7.4 billion takeover.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s about 10 percent of its workforce.</p>
<p>The cuts, which were disclosed in a <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/709519/000119312509210338/d8k.htm">regulatory filing today</a>, are to occur in all markets in which Sun (JAVA) has a presence and will be completed over the next 12 months. Sun expects to incur cash severance and other charges of $75 million to $125 million over the next several quarters as a result.</p>
<p>Seems Oracle CEO Larry Ellison wasn&#8217;t kidding when he said further delays in approving his company&#8217;s deal to buy Sun would cost more people their jobs.</p>
<p>Ugly news for Sun, which has already made sweeping job cuts over the past year, releasing some 6,000 employees into the wild since last November.</p>
<p>Oracle and Sun have not yet responded to requests for comment.</p>
<p>UPDATE: Oracle has declined to comment on the layoffs at Sun.</p>

<p>The company today announced plans to reduce its newsroom staff by eight percent by the end of 2009. Cuts will be made by buyout, but the company will resort to layoffs should its hand be forced.</p>
<p>&#8220;As before, if we do not reach 100 positions through buyouts, we will be forced to go to layoffs,&#8221; New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller wrote in a note to employees. I hope that won’t happen, but it might. I won’t pretend that these staff cuts will not add to the burdens of journalists whose responsibilities have grown faster than their compensation. Like you, I yearn for the day when we can do our jobs without looking over our shoulders for economic thunderstorms.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sad, sad news for a storied newspaper and an imperiled industry.</p>
<p>Keller&#8217;s memo in full, below:</p>

Colleagues,</p>
<p>I had planned to invite you to the newsroom and break this news in person today, but I&#8217;ve been hit by something that seems to be the flu. Though I strongly believe in delivering bad news in person, I don&#8217;t want to add insult to injury by spreading infection.</p>
<p>Let me cut to the chase: We have been told to reduce the newsroom by 100 positions between now and the end of the year.</p>
<p>We hope to accomplish this by offering voluntary buyouts. On Thursday, the Company will be sending buyout offers to everyone in the newsroom. Getting a buyout package does NOT mean we want you to leave. It is simply easier to send the envelopes to everyone. If you think a buyout may be right for you, you have up to 45 days to decide whether you will accept it or not.</p>
<p>As before, if we do not reach 100 positions through buyouts, we will be forced to go to layoffs. I hope that won&#8217;t happen, but it might.</p>
<p>Our colleagues in editorial and op-ed, and on the business side, also face another round of budget cuts.</p>
<p>In recent years, we&#8217;ve managed to avoid the disabling cutbacks that have hit other newsrooms. The Company has chosen to protect the journalism by cutting production and other business-side costs, and the newsroom itself has managed its resources frugally. These latest cuts will still leave us with the largest, strongest and most ambitious editorial staff of any newsroom in the country, if not the world.</p>
<p>I won&#8217;t pretend that these staff cuts will not add to the burdens of journalists whose responsibilities have grown faster than their compensation. But we&#8217;ve been looking hard at ways to minimize the impact&#8211;in part, by re-engineering some of our copy flow. I won&#8217;t promise this will be easy or painless, but I believe we can weather these cuts without seriously compromising our commitment to coverage of the region, the country and the world. We will remain the single best news organization on earth.</p>
<p>I doubt that anyone is shocked by the fact of this, but it is happening sooner than anyone anticipated. When we took our 5 percent pay cuts, it was in the hope that this would fend off the need for more staff cuts this year. But I accept that if it&#8217;s going to happen, it should be done quickly. We will get through this and move on.</p>
<p>In my absence, Bill Schmidt and John and Jill have volunteered to take your questions this afternoon. Feel free to bring additional questions to me as soon as I&#8217;m back, or check with Bill Schmidt or John or Jill privately, or save them for the next Throw Stuff at Bill session, which is in a couple of weeks.</p>

And whoever wins the bidding for BusinessWeek will almost certainly take an ax to that company&#8217;s payroll.</p>

<p>In a risky but interesting move that has some at the company nervous and others excited, Yahoo is in the process of moving key development responsibility for its juggernaut Yahoo News unit to Taiwan.</p>
<p>Under the new system, product management, engineering and user interface design for the powerful Yahoo (YHOO) property will become the responsibility of staffers there.</p>
<p>Editorial employees for Yahoo News&#8211;which is the No. 1 news site on the Web with 48.4 unique monthly visitors, according to comScore data (SCOR)&#8211;will remain in the U.S., largely located at its Santa Monica, Calif., office.</p>
<p>Sources had alerted BoomTown to the change at Yahoo&#8217;s flagship content offering this week and many I spoke to about it were deeply worried about further separating key functions in the creation of Yahoo News.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are losing more and more of our ability to make quick changes and react to new technologies, which has worked pretty well so far, since we are #1,&#8221; said one staffer. &#8220;First, we all worked together across a room, then hundreds of miles away and now it is thousands.&#8221;</p>
<p>Previously, as was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/yahoo-content-model-gets-remixed-as-product-development-is-globally-centralized/">first reported here in February</a>, the distributed and regional method of developing content was shifted to a central global product development organization, with product management, engineering and UI design centered at Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ under CTO Ari Balogh.</p>
<p>The argument for the shift posits that centralizing the product development of a Yahoo media offering drives efficiencies, saves money, eliminates redundancies and accelerates growth across the world.</p>
<p>Those who do not like the idea think it is wrong to separate the development of a product from the programming because the two are intricately dependent and need to be tweaked delicately.</p>
<p>In addition, they argue, it makes Yahoo media offerings, which have been largely successful, less unique and more dull.</p>
<p>Well, tough tomatoes, because Yahoo confirmed the transition to me when I inquired about it. It was announced internally several weeks ago.</p>
<p>In an interview I did yesterday afternoon with Jeff Kinder, SVP of media products and solutions, who is spearheading the change, he said it was key that Yahoo News streamline how it makes its products in order to be more innovative and responsive on a global basis.</p>
<p>Before the shift to a global system, he pointed out that Yahoo had 26 different news products worldwide, using nine content management systems.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is part of building a global media platform,&#8221; said Kinder, who leads development of Yahoo&#8217;s anchor media properties, as well as its listings and regional products around the world.</p>
<p>Kinder said the staff in Taiwan was selected to take on Yahoo News because it had been creating top-level news products and was passionate about the arena.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, similar functions for other major Yahoo content categories&#8211;Sports, Finance and Entertainment&#8211;will remain in the United States.</p>
<p>In addition, he noted, with employees in Taiwan taking over these functions at Yahoo News, it would &#8220;free up some of the talent&#8221; in Silicon Valley to work on other critical content projects.</p>
<p>Kinder dismissed worries about any logjams in the ability of U.S.-based Yahoo News staffers to make changes to offerings, either for consumers or advertising partners, noting there were weekly calls between the teams and plenty of ways to communicate online.</p>
<p>But those worried about the change said the reason for the move was more to cut costs in the content arena, which&#8211;like many parts of Yahoo&#8211;has undergone layoffs and expense reductions.</p>
<p>Countered Kinder: &#8220;We are all driving to the same goal&#8230;.This is not about cost savings, but about accelerating change and leveraging a global team.&#8221;</p>

<p>Time Warner&#8217;s AOL can spin positive news out of the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090429/aols-disappearing-ad-revenues-down-20/">miserable results it offered up today</a>: <em>Our wounds are self-inflicted, and we can heal them.</em></p>
<p>But Ann Moore, who runs Time Warner&#8217;s Time Inc. publishing business, will have a tougher time selling that story to investors. Her magazine company performed as badly as the rest of the industry did in the last quarter.</p>
<p>Time Inc. saw ad revenue drop 30 percent in the first three months of 2009, which corresponds roughly to the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090415/a-miserable-three-months-for-the-magazine-business-sales-down-202-at-least/?mod=ATD_search">26 percent drop in ad pages</a> the overall magazine business recorded during the same time.</p>
<p>That drop is much worse than industry executives had braced for last fall when nearly every publishing company, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081110/time-inc-to-employees-want-to-quit-were-all-ears/">Time Inc. included</a>, made a round of layoffs. And as this quarter&#8217;s miserable numbers trickled in, publishers from <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090331/forbes-starts-a-second-round-of-layoffs-who-else-will-join-them/">Forbes</a> to <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090305/conde-nast-ceo-chuck-townsend-to-the-troops-keep-your-heads-up-and-your-expenses-down/?mod=ATD_sphere">Cond&eacute; Nast</a> have made a second round of cuts to adjust to the new reality.</p>
<p>Time Inc. hasn&#8217;t done so, or at least not in a significant manner. But it may have to. One suggestion, offered to me by a Time Warner (TWX) executive yesterday: &#8220;Time has way too many magazines. They should fix that.&#8221;</p>
<p>For the record, Time Inc. has <a href="http://timeinc.ibs.aol.com/brands/">&#8220;more than 115 titles&#8221;</a> world-wide.</p>

Well, there&#8217;s one thing on the rise amid this declining economy: job cuts.</p>
<p>The technology industry was <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081114/tech-sector-to-release-180000-workers-into-wild/">supposed to cut 180,000 jobs in 2008</a>; instead, <a href="http://gigaom.com/2009/01/29/statshot-tech-job-cuts-inching-closer-to-200000/techjobcuts/">it cut 186,955 jobs </a>&#8211;up 74.2 percent from the 107,295 job cuts recorded in 2007. That&#8217;s the dismal word from recruitment outfit Challenger, Gray &#038; Christmas, which helpfully notes that this is the largest industry workforce reduction since 2003, when tech suffered 228,325 layoffs.<br />

<p>Still a chance to break that record, though. Said Challenger, &#8220;Cuts could reach even higher in 2009, as there is no evidence yet that the economy has hit the bottom of this downward portion of the cycle. We almost certainly will not see a repeat of the 2008 first quarter, in which tech cuts totaled just 17,345.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Agilent Technologies (A) disclosed in an SEC filing this afternoon that it will reduce its workforce by 500 positions, with most of the cuts to be completed by May 31, 2009 and the rest by October 31. The company also said it has reduced its temporary workforce by over 300 positions, and will temporarily cut pay and/or require unpaid time off for Agilent employees worldwide.</p>
<p>Agilent said the restructuring will reduce annual operating expenses by about $65 million; the pay reduction programs, which are effective January 1, will save another $100 million<br />

Which just means there are many more to go.</p>
<p>So says Barclays Capital analyst Anthony DiClemente, who probably isn&#8217;t going out on a limb here. Yesterday&#8217;s cuts from <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081204/viacom-lays-off-850-takes-450-million-charge/">Viacom</a> (VIA) and GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC&#8211;850 and 500 jobs, respectively&#8211;are actually &#8220;small in aggregate,&#8221; he argues. So who&#8217;s next?</p>
<p>Pretty much anyone that hasn&#8217;t made significant cuts will have to do so soon, DiClemente says. He singles out Disney (DIS), and specifically &#8220;its underperforming divisions, including the ABC Network&#8221; as a logical candidate. But DiClemente doesn&#8217;t get any more specific about the number of people he thinks Disney will or should fire, other than noting it has a lot of workers (see Barclays chart below; click to enlarge). I&#8217;ve asked him for additional color and have asked Disney for comment, as well; not holding my breath, though.</p>

<p>In fact, the ill winds that will surely be blowing west from Wall Street remind me of the classic lines of noir crime novelist Raymond Chandler:</p>

It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands&#8217; necks. Anything can happen.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Indeed, bad times, as one smart exec told me yesterday over lunch, are very good times to clean house.</p>
<p>And, as I wrote yesterday in post called <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080915/dear-web-20-its-the-economy-stupid/">&#8220;Dear Web 2.0: It&#8217;s <em>Still</em> the Economy, Stupid,&#8221;</a> the frightening gyrations of the financial markets will surely impact Silicon Valley, as much as the culture here tries to pretend it will never be affected.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s why I am guessing the sector is going to be seeing some judicious job cuts from managers in the next few months.</p>
<p>Yesterday, for example, our most excellent blogger contributor, Eric Savitz of Barron&#8217;s, <a href="http://online.barrons.com/article/SB122125823888930015.html?mod=googlenews_barrons">cited a report by Wedge Parters on the online auction giant eBay</a>. Paraphrasing the Wedge report, he noted &#8220;the company&#8217;s business is &#8216;deteriorating&#8217; and that the company is readying layoffs that could affect 10 percent of the company&#8217;s 15,000 employees.&#8221;</p>
<p>Many think companies like Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) and even Google (GOOG) must start to smartly make cuts&#8211;even if they add in other areas&#8211;to make sure that they are lean and mean in a less frothy market.</p>
<p>And I am also guessing start-ups, even those flush with investment cash, have to be thinking hard about spending as freely.</p>
<p>While you certainly can&#8217;t cut your way into growth, a little prudence is one quality Web 2.0 is probably about to learn.</p>
