Williams interviewed the Apple chief at New York's Grand Central Terminal.

NBC is more than a little excited about its upcoming sit-down interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook.

And it is a coup, considering that Cook has followed his predecessor’s footsteps in limiting his public appearances. Cook’s appearance onstage at our D10 conference in June was really the only major interview he has done, aside from those tied to product launches.

But, as “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams notes, there are some differences between the two Apple chiefs.

“Unlike the man he replaced, Steve Jobs, Tim Cook was able to walk all but unrecognized across the central floor of Grand Central Station,” Williams said in a video clip teasing the forthcoming interview. Williams said that Cook did get a ton of praise and attention once he set foot inside the station’s Apple Store.

Hopefully the interview itself will provide some juicier info. Williams said NBC will preview the interview on “NBC Nightly News” next Thursday, and the full piece will air on Williams’s “Rock Center” show later that night.

"The Newsroom" survives the Internet ice age.

Hollywood super-writer Aaron Sorkin has already gotten his new show on the struggles of creating a new television news show in the Internet age renewed for another season.

The successful Sorkin made light of the struggles to attract a big audience for the HBO program in a recent onstage interview at the 10th D: All Things Digital conference.

Not so hard, as it turns out for the voluble scribe, whose “The Newsroom” got 2.1 million viewers in its opening two weeks ago, which is just behind HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and “Game of Thrones.”

Sorkin did manage to attract some controversy recently when he said in a tense interview with Sarah Nicole Pickett of Canada’s Globe and Mail:

“Listen here, Internet girl. It wouldn’t kill you to watch a film or pick up a newspaper once in a while.”

The fab line did result in an even funnier Tumblr on the kerfuffle.

Here’s the full video of Sorkin’s interview with Walt Mossberg at D10, as well as another very funny recent viral video, titled “Sorkinisms,” in which the writer uses his best lines over and over, compiled from a variety of his shows.

One of the more stable of the Web 2.0 companies that have gone public has turned out to be LinkedIn.

Unlike several other recent IPOs, the business networking site’s stock is strong, and investors seem to like what Chairman Reid Hoffman and CEO Jeff Weiner have been doing.

In an interview with me at the 10th D: All Things Digital conference, the pair laid out a vision of “making every professional more effective,” and said that social innovation is not over.

Apple's WWDC presentation took nearly two hours, and none of that time was devoted to the product that lots of smart people insist is going to show up one day, someday.

Nope, still no Apple TV.

Apple’s WWDC presentation took nearly two hours, and none of that time was devoted to the product lots of smart people insist is going to show up one day, someday.

Still, look a little closer, and you might see the outlines of Apple’s TV plans staring you right in the face.

It’s possible that Tim Cook really will come out with a big, shiny, integrated TV set. But regardless, he appears to be building the “real” Apple TV right in front of us. The key here is to focus not on the hardware but on the software, the content, and the way users will get to access all of that stuff.

In March, for instance, Apple started an in-app billing integration with Netflix. So current Apple TV users — the ones using the $99 hockey puck — can sign up for Reed Hastings’s service directly from their couch, using their iTunes account instead of a credit card.

Right now, there isn’t a whole lot else to pay for on Apple TV, except for iTunes movies and TV shows. But one day there will be, and that Netflix deal should serve as a template.

Today we got another important piece of the puzzle: As Apple announced earlier in the year, its new Mountain Lion OS will offer “AirPlay mirroring,” so Mac users can move whatever’s on their laptop or PC screen directly to their TV, using the Apple TV box as bridge.

Based on the liveblogs I saw this morning, Apple executive Craig Federighi spent no more than a few seconds showing how this would work, and didn’t say a word about how you might use this in your living room — “fantastic for the classroom and meeting room,” he said.

But a lot of clever folks I pay attention to, including Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire, think that AirPlay will be a key part of the Apple TV experience.

For starters, AirPlay should, in theory, let you move whatever’s on your Safari browser onto your TV. So anything you can stream to your MacBook can go to your flatscreen. It’s possible that there may still be technical limitations on this, and I assume it’s meaningful that Apple didn’t play this up as a living-room experience — yet.

But AirPlay on your PC (or iPad or iPhone, which already features AirPlay) should also give rise to a new breed of dual-screen Apple TV + AirPlay apps. Per Allaire: “It’s already happening: From MLB, which allows you to use your iPad as a second screen for HD baseball game broadcasts, to games that render on the TV while using your phone or tablet as a controller, to many of Apple’s own native apps like iPhoto and Keynote which present rich interactive interfaces on the iPad while rendering media onto the TV.”

Next on the Apple TV road map: Getting more content on there. Tim Cook defended Apple TV’s offerings during his D10 interview last month — in short, he pointed to the iTunes catalog of TV shows and movies and said, “See?” But he also mentioned recent trips to see Hollywood studios and other content partners. If you’re into reading Apple tea leaves, those seem like meaningful ones to examine.

What is Apple going to unveil at WWDC?

Apple will kick off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference with a Monday keynote address from CEO Tim Cook, and there’s no shortage of prognostications about the products he’s likely to show off.

Back in early May we reported that WWDC would see the debut of a brand-new “blow your head off” Apple-developed mapping application. On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal confirmed this. So we can almost certainly expect a new Maps application to be part of Monday’s presentation. Also a near-sure thing: A new MacBook Pro with a significantly thinner chassis and high-resolution “Retina-esque” display, as we previously reported.

But what else might we see?

During the opening night session at D10 last week, Cook’s comments about Facebook strongly suggested that the announcement of some manner of iOS integration with the social networking service — similar to the one Apple has already done with Twitter — could be on tap. As Cook said, when asked about such a deal at D10, “Stay tuned on this one.” Does that comment mean that iOS 6, which Apple plans to show off at WWDC, will have Facebook baked in? Certainly possible, as other have claimed.

Another likely possibility: New Macs. We’ve been hearing chatter about a refresh of most of Apple’s Mac lines for some time now. Yesterday, 9to5Mac reported that Apple has new versions of the MacBook Air, the iMac and perhaps the Mac mini and/or Mac Pro, the last of which is long overdue for an update. We haven’t been able to confirm this report independently, but it, too, sounds entirely plausible. MacBook Airs have not seen a refresh since July 2011. And the last MacBook Pro refresh was a relatively minor one in October.

Also possible: Deeper native integration of iCloud into OS X Mountain Lion and iOS 6. As I wrote when iCloud first launched, “If, as Steve Jobs says, software is the soul of Apple’s products, hardware their brains and sinew, then iCloud is their memory — and soon perhaps one of their biggest selling points as well. Certainly it’s a feature that will differentiate Apple’s already well-differentiated products even further from the competition.” ICloud may not be a major driver of customer loyalty now, but with its ease of use and promise of change-on-one-device, update-to-all computing, it will be, someday. And it’s been about a year since iCloud debuted, so it, too, is due for an update.

What else? APIs for iCloud and Siri, perhaps. Apps for Apple TV, or a broader enhancement to the device that paves the way for a more comprehensive TV offering. As Tim Cook noted at D10, Apple’s Apple TV business has grown quite a bit in the past year. In 2011, the company sold fewer than three million Apple TVs. In the first six months of this year, it has sold 2.7 million. As Cook told D attendees, “This is an area of intense interest for us. We’re going to keep pulling the string and see where it takes us.”

Perhaps WWDC attendees will get a chance to see, as well. We’ll find out on Monday.

Quri's new app lets you earn a few extra bucks as you shop.

Grocery shopping and buying household items can be hard on the wallet, but there’s a way to make some of that money back. And it’s not through extreme couponing.

Today at the 10th annual D: All Things Digital conference, San Francisco-based company Quri launched its secret shopper app and analytics tool for consumer product brands and retailers. At its root, Quri helps businesses monitor the way their products and promotions are being executed in a retail environment and sell more product, but it also gives consumers an opportunity to earn some extra money by being the eyes for the companies.

Currently only available for the iPhone, the EasyShift app presents users with a map of assignments, or “shifts,” that are available in their area. Shifts are typically observation-based tasks, such as photographing a product display or answering questions about stock levels, and range in pay from $1 to $20. The average, however, is between $5 and $7 for tasks that only take a few minutes to complete.

After a shift is done, Quri performs a quality check on the gathered information, and then users are paid every night through PayPal. In addition to payment, EasyShift users earn points with each task. The more points you have, the more privileges you get, such as the ability to reserve more than one shift at one time or access to higher-paying shifts.

Released to a limited number of users in eight to 10 markets since July 2011, the free app is now available to everyone through the iTunes store. During the trial phase, Quri co-founder John Mecklenburg said users earned around $50 to $100 per month, with the most active participants earning up to $800 to $1,000 a month.

For businesses, Quri provides a Web app that compiles and analyzes all the data in real time as the EasyShift participants submit their task. Companies can then filter the information by metric, market, retailer or question, and use the real-time data and photos to make sure the store display is up to their standards, check stock, learn more about shopping habits by region and more.

“Brands invest hundreds of billions of dollars every year to promote their products in stores, and they need a scalable solution to measure and optimize that investment,” said Justin Behar, co-founder of Quri. “We can check the status of products and promotions in thousands of stores within hours, providing brands and retailers with real-time, actionable data and photos, which enables them to greatly improve their in-store execution and the shopper experience.”

Quri says over a dozen brands have signed up for its service, including Nestle Dreyers. The EasyShift app was released to a limited number of users in eight to 10 markets in July 2011, but it’s now available to everyone nationwide through the iTunes App Store.

As far as Android and Windows Phone apps, the company says it will explore other platforms as they expand to more markets.

Quri, formerly known as Wiseview, was founded in late 2010 and is funded by Catamount Ventures and Simon Equity Partners.

After a break, though, the jokes about undergarments had to come to an end. It was time to talk patents with so-called “patent troll” Nathan Myhrvold:

Intellectual Ventures CEO Nathan Myhrvold Live at D10"Thomas Edison’s business model was very similar to ours." That’s how Nathan Myhrvold, CEO of Intellectual Ventures, described the compan…

Nathan Myhrvold believes in what he believes and he’s great at defending his thesis. #atd10triciad

I’m having a really violent emotional reaction to Myhrvold’s rhetoric, and I think a lot of the audience is the same. #atd10Alexia Tsotsis

#ATD10 the simple truth: we are scared of myrhvold’s patent portfolio. I fear the cease and desist note for a patent I didn’t know existed.Brian O’Kelley

He has a patent on entitlement, so watch out. RT @triciad Myhrovld says animosity people have for him due to a sense of entitlement. #atd10Chris Taylor

Once patent owned, offense/defense can change any moment. RT @dangillmor: They buy patent portfolios for defense, not offense #D10Dan Farfan

Agree with him or not, Nathan Myhrvold was entertaining, cogent, and witty in defense of software patents. #ATD10Brad Silverberg

Meanwhile, though, it was time for LinkedIn’s dynamic duo of Jeff Weiner and Reid Hoffman:

LinkedIn Makes a Funny: Here’s the LOL-worthy Marketing Parody Video From D10LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner and Chairman Reid Hoffman today came to D10 and had a very serious conversation about their business. But first …

And then got a bit more serious with a look at why LinkedIn has been successful, with a look toward the future of professional identity.

Took this LinkedIn interview to make me realize I need to change my profile #atd10Joanna Stern

But if the staff was impressed by Catmull, they were even more taken by the following act, Oracle’s colorful CEO, Larry Ellison:

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison Live at D10There are few characters more colorful in the history of Silicon Valley than Larry Ellison. The CEO and founder of the enterprise softwar…

"They don’t call it the Internet any more. They call it cloud computing." -Larry Ellison #atd10Matt MacInnis

What??? *insert WTF meme here* RT @inafried: Oracle CEO Larry Ellison: I think the Internet was kind of the last big change in tech. #ATD10Argenis Fernandez

Damn, that’s a big phone RT @kabster728: Larry Ellison predicts that tablets and smartphones will be much bigger than PCs. #ATD10Christopher Trout

And, at first, it seemed like it would be a relatively calm interview …

Larry Ellison is usually wound up. In early days, he would have shouting matches with Ed Esber of Ashton Tate at industry conferences #atd10Eric Hippeau

… but not six minutes later, things changed (for the better):

"I’m not going to call him Léo. I’m going to call him Leo." –Larry Ellison really doesn’t like Mr. Apotheker #atd10Dylan Tweney

Larry Ellison owns Tim Cook when it comes to giving an entertaining interview. @karaswisher doing a great job. #ATD10Sriram Krishnan

And now Larry Ellison pulls off the rubber mask. Yep, it was Robert Downey Jr. all along. #atd10Peter Kafka

OK @karaswisher & @waltmossberg have to bring back Larry Ellison every year #atd10Eric Hippeau

I have not been this excited about enterprise since I got that free car rental Groupon last summer. #atd10Mike Isaac

After the high of Larry Ellison, it was time to take a breath and remember a tech titan and D regular who is no longer with us:

Remembering the Legacy of Apple CEO Steve Jobs at D10For better or worse, much of D10 has been a reflection on the legacy of Steve Jobs, the iconic Apple founder who died last year. However,…

What a thoughtful, lovely tribute #atd10: video of all Steve Jobs’ @allthingsd interviews, 100% free on iTunes http://bit.ly/KJf24TLaura Janes

All things D is more like All things Steve – not that I’m complaining #d10phil barrett

undefinedInstagram

And here’s what Steve looked like at D1 in 2003:

undefinedInstagram

After a panel that extended the talks with Ellison and Catmull — both close friends of Jobs – it was time for dinner outside at the Terranea Resort’s main swimming pool:

undefinedInstagram

But the night wasn’t over. To close out the day’s interviews, Kara and Walt welcomed Hollywood power player (and Ari-Gold-from-”Entourage”-inspiration) Ari Emanuel:

undefinedInstagram

undefinedInstagram

I honestly think the real Ari Emanuel may be cooler then the @HBO Entourage one #ATD10.Jason Knapp

I want [Google] to start filtering stolen content, says Emanuel. That is their responsibility. #ATD10Bo Hee Kim

And, like Ellison, a slow start quickly reached an extremely entertaining crescendo:

Yyeeeeeesssss! Ari Emanuel is riled up!! #ATD10Katie Boehret

"That was a stupid example" Ari Emanuel calls it the way it is – I want to see him throw a punch! #ATD10Kevin Conroy

"Go sit down and think of something else and come back up so I can yell at you again," Emanuel to unfortunate questioner. #ATD10Bo Hee Kim

Nightcap = What Ari Emanuel is going to put in @joshualtopolsky after he gets off stage at #atd10 .Ina Fried

First time i’ve seen a D guest essentially banish a questioner from his presence #atd10John Paczkowski

It took about 45 minutes for Ari Emanuel to completely lose it. Amazing restraint from him #ATD10Eric Hippeau

I’m enjoying this "unscripted" show. Thanks Ari. #ATD10Bo Hee Kim

It’s no understatement to say that Emanuel’s day-ender was popular with the audience, and on Twitter:

This.is.awesome. #ATD10Jason Knapp

So, how could D11 be any better? One Twitter follower gave us a great idea:

Enjoying all the tweets from #ATD10. Only way they’d be better is if I could get Aaron Sorkin to edit them for Christopher Walken to read.Nick Lorenzen

And, on that note, let’s call it a night. We may have a few calls to make in the morning …

The new beta is geared specifically to Android phones and is an effort for the company to better understand the variety of devices, screen sizes and operating-system versions that are out there.

After an early version leaked out, Flipboard is now ready with an official beta version of its Android software.

Flipboard started making the test software available on Wednesday, though users must request the product on the company’s site and get download instructions via email.

The goal of the managed beta is to better understand all of the different types of devices and versions of the operating system that Android owners are using, Flipboard marketing executive Marci McCue said on Wednesday.

“We need more data,” McCue said from the sidelines of the D10 conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Like other iOS developers looking to add Android support, Flipboard is trying to ensure that it can deliver a good experience on a vastly larger number of products than it has ever tried to support.

Although the Flipboard’s Android software leaked out shortly after it was demoed at the Galaxy S III launch, McCue said the company opted to do a few more revisions internally before releasing the code to the public.

It will send a note to all users of the leaked version, letting them know that an official, updated beta is now available.

The beta version, McCue said, is geared specifically to phones and has an experience much more similar to the one-handed interface seen on the iPhone than the one used on the iPad.

Flipboard for Android will also come on Samsung Galaxy S III models in certain countries, though the exact positioning will vary by country and carrier. In some cases, the company’s new Android widget will be preloaded, as well.

With versions out for the iPad and iPhone, and the test version for Android also released, the top priority for the company now is increasing the number of languages in which the software is localized, as well as the amount of international content available, McCue said.

Flipboard is currently localized in French, Chinese and Japanese, with local content available in about 10 countries.

Instead, the two — whose company is the best-performing tech IPO in recent memory — laid out a vision of “making every professional more effective” in an interview with Kara Swisher at D10.

Other LinkedIn mission statements Weiner and Hoffman suggested as they were asked to define where the company came from and where it’s going:

Connecting talent to opportunity at massive scale

LinkedIn is not about passing time; it’s about enabling members and their productivity

A platform for professionals to navigate work life

The business of helping companies hire, market and sell

Our first value is “members first”

Weiner said LinkedIn’s current goals include simplification of its products — a la recent development on the company’s mobile apps — growth and localization, and development of monetization products.

He did sound a bit too much like a business-school textbook at times, with statements like, “And lastly, we want to invest in everyday value propositions.”

But Weiner and Hoffman proved they have a sense of humor by bringing a hilarious parody video to show at the conference, that was — surprise! — also about LinkedIn brand statements. (We’ll post it later.)

For instance: “With LinkedIn, growing your network is as easy as sliding down the rainbow to Kittentown!”

Nathan Myhrvold believes that, popular or not, he is serving an important role in furthering innovation. Case in point, he says: Advances being made in wireless antennas and nuclear reactors.

Intellectual Ventures is often criticized for being a patent troll, but Nathan Myhrvold talked on Wednesday about a couple of the actual products that are coming from his invention company.

The company has designs for new nuclear reactors as well as for a new type of broadband antenna, both of which have been spun out as separate companies.

Of course, much of Myhrvold’s business — and the ensuing animosity — stems from his company’s method of amassing huge patent portfolios and then either licensing them or suing over patents. And that’s the area where Walt Mossberg and the audience took Myhrvold to task.

That said, Myhrvold maintains that his company is aiding innovation, and that he doesn’t mind if he’s not the popular kid in the D class.

Here are the video highlights:

Don't expect a cradle-to-grave depiction of Steve Jobs's life from Aaron Sorkin's upcoming movie.

Don’t expect a cradle-to-grave depiction of Steve Jobs’s life from Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming movie, said Sorkin, who has signed on to write the would-be blockbuster biopic, based on Walter Isaacson’s biography and made by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Instead, Sorkin is looking to absorb as much as he can about the Apple founder and then “identify the point of friction that appeals to me and dramatize it.”

Speaking at D10 in conversation with Walt Mossberg, who frequently interviewed and wrote about Jobs, Sorkin said he feels the pressure of depicting a legend. “One of the hesitations I had in taking on the movie was it was a little bit like writing about the Beatles. There are so many people who know so much about him and who revere him, and I just saw a minefield of disappointment.”

To those people, he warned that the movie will be more of a painting than a photograph.

But it’s not like Sorkin has finished a script yet. The Jobs project is at the earliest stages, he said.

“I will be going through a long period that would not look to the casual observer like writing. It will look more like watching ESPN; to the untrained eye, it would look like watching college football. It’s a process of procrastination,” he said of his creative process.

What actor will play Jobs? Sorkin said he didn’t know, but it had to be someone smart, because that’s impossible to fake.

Sorkin said he’d describe his career as a pattern of writing about people who are smarter than he is, something he was inspired by from a young age, growing up in a family of people smarter than he was.

“I really fell in love with the phonetic sound of intelligence and the sound of a really good argument,” Sorkin said.

Later in the conversation, Sorkin talked about how he writes outside of the current trend toward antihero characters, with the possible exception of his depiction of Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Network.”

Mossberg asked Sorkin if he plans to portray Jobs as an antihero.

“With as little as I know about the Steve Jobs movie, I know this for sure: I can’t judge the character,” Sorkin said. “He has to be a hero, I have to find the parts of him that are like me; I have to defend this character. You want to write the character as if they are making the case to God why they should be allowed into heaven.”

For filmmakers, software company Otoy brings the visual effects studio to the living room.

If you have dreams of creating the next Hollywood blockbuster but don’t have the budget of a big movie studio, a company called Otoy wants to help.

At the D10 conference today, the Los Angeles-based software provider demoed its cloud-based 3-D rendering service called Octane Render, which aims to bring cinema rendering power to any laptop or tablet, at a fraction of the cost.

“What we’re offering lets you render at a higher quality than ILM [Industrial Light & Magic] and other high-end visual effects studios,” said Jules Urbach, co-founder and CEO of Otoy.

Rendering is the process of creating photo-realistic images, such as buildings and animated characters, on a computer, using effects like lighting, shadows, texture — and then bringing that to film. The process can take a lot of time and power, not to mention money, so if you don’t work for a movie studio, creating the next “Transformers” or “The Avengers” can be challenging.

That’s where Octane Render comes in. The service allows you to use your own computer or tablet to work on rendering, but moves the processor-intensive task to its servers, which are equipped with powerful graphic chips. To demonstrate this, Otoy showed at D10 how it created “Transformers” characters for a TV commercial, using just an iPad and Octane Render.

Another advantage of Octane Render is that you will be able to see any modifications you make in real time, whereas the traditional rendering process can take hours.

“Not only is our software cheaper and more efficient, it gives filmmakers more creativity, because you’re able to see things instantaneously,” said Alissa Grainger, co-founder and president of Otoy. “So if an artist doesn’t like the lighting or material, you can change it and get instantaneous feedback.”

Octane Render has been in development for three years, and in beta, or testing mode, for the past 18 months, with about 10,000 users. Otoy will open up the service to everyone later this summer; the company did not reveal pricing at this time. It did say, however, the cost would be “minimal.”

Otoy was founded in 2008 by Urbach, Grainger and Malcolm Taylor. In addition to Octane Render, the company offers a game-streaming service that competes with OnLive and Gaikai. Otoy investors include George Gilder, technology writer and host of the Gilder Telecosm Forum, and Taylor Frigon Capital Partners, LP.

"I never was a popular kid in class," the Intellectual Ventures CEO and former Microsoft executive said on Wednesday. "I'm not going to be popular in this class."

Nathan Myhrvold knows that he is one of the least popular guests at this week’s D: All Things Digital conference, and that’s okay with him.

“I never was a popular kid in class,” the Intellectual Ventures CEO and former Microsoft executive said at D10 on Wednesday. “I’m not going to be popular in this class. If I want popularity, I go to a chef’s convention.”

Although Myhrvold’s company does some of its own inventing — working on things like a new type of nuclear reactor and a broadband antenna — the company is best known for amassing a huge number of patents invented by others and then seeking to license those patents or else pursue revenue in court.

Myhrvold made the case to the crowd, though probably unsuccessfully, that his company serves a purpose similar to that of venture capital or private equity in the process of aiding innovation.

Myhrvold also quoted his own past statement at an earlier D conference, saying, “If people don’t find what you are doing threatening, then it is probably not very important.”

Zynga’s road to succes owes much to Facebook — the social giant has been by far the largest driver of traffic to Zynga’s gaming platform. And as Zynga CEO Mark Pincus noted at our D: All Things Digital conference, Facebook remains the platform of choice in driving traffic.

“We grew the fastest with Facebook,” Pincus said. “And as we saw their platform becoming better and better. … We kept doubling down.”

So over the course of Zynga’s evolution from start-up to publicly traded company, Pincus says his company grew more and more reliant on Facebook, with the lion’s share of Zynga’s gaming business focused on the social network.

But there’s an elephant in the room that Pincus danced around throughout the interview with Kara Swisher: Zynga’s continual “doubling down” on Facebook over time can be seen as a reliance on the company. And as Facebook recognized in its S-1 filing earlier this year, Zynga makes up more than 12 percent of Facebook’s overall revenue.

So while the two companies seem to rely on one another heavily, it’s unclear how much that will continue to be the case in the future.

Pincus, though, remains cagey on distancing his company too far from the social giant. “We’ve never thought in terms of attachment and detachment from Facebook,” he said.

Mobile, however, seemed to be the direction in which Pincus wanted to move. “We see Facebook as a platform, just like we see iOS and Android as platforms. “Mobile lets you play in your cab or on the train. And it’s growing very quickly.”

True&Co says the days of standing half-naked in a dressing room, trying on ill-fitting bras under the skeptical eye of a salesperson, are over.

It has been said that women in tech could use more support.

Two entrepreneurs have taken that quite literally, launching a lingerie Web site that uses a formula to help women get the perfect bra fit without even having to try anything on.

During the D10 conference today, True&Co co-founders Aarthi Ramamurthy and Michelle Lam showed off how women can buy bras without having to deal with dressing room try-ons — and without needing to use a measuring tape.

Potential bra buyers can take a quick quiz and fill out personal information, including the size of the customer’s current best-fitting bra, technical fit questions (such as, “Does your cup runneth over?”), the perceived shape of the customer’s breasts and “psychological body image” questions. Bra recommendations, drawn from True&Co’s inventory of items that match more than 2,000 different body types, are then offered, based on the customer’s input.

Much like the way that Warby Parker eyewear offers free at-home try-ons, True&Co customers will receive five free bras to try on at home, and can then purchase any of the bras or return any or all at no cost. The customer picks three of the bras, while the site’s recommendation system selects two.

Every bra on the Web site costs less than $50; underwear starts around $15. (Lucky conferencegoers are getting a thong in their D10 conference swag bags. You’re welcome, guys.)

True&Co joins the ranks of companies like Bonobos, which sells better-fitting pants for men; J. Hilburn; and another female-focused start-up called Quincy Apparel, which factors bra sizes into women’s suit designs, much in the way men buy suits based on their inseam, waist size and arm length.

“The bra-shopping experience is probably one of the most uncomfortable shopping experiences a woman can have,” Lam said onstage, noting that 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size. “So we decided to change that with some technology.”

The company first formed in October, and officially launches its service today to coincide with the D10 demo. It has received a total of $2 million in funding from First Round Capital, SoftTechVC, SoftBank Capital, Aileen Lee and former LinkedIn executive Ellen Levy.

Lam and Ramamurthy said that around 500 customers have visited the site and taken the bra quiz so far.

If you’re curious to see how, exactly, this company plans to revolutionize buying over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders, check out the video below:

Day One at #ATD10, in Tweets and Pictures

Tweets and pictures from the first day of the 10th annual D: All Things D conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Storified by Eric Scott Johnson · Wed, May 30 2012 00:17:30

At long last, the 10th D conference is here. Here’s what conference attendees at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., have been saying online:

I don’t always go to conferences, but when I do, I prefer #ATD10Jeff Berman

Heading down south later today for #atd10, expect significant tweet volume around 6pm when I join 50 other people paraphrasing Tim Cook.Tom Krazit

And Twitter and Instagram users couldn’t stay away from our first guest to arrive — Zeus the Eurasian eagle-owl. He’s here to scare off any pesky coastal birds that might otherwise invade the grounds.

Security just arrived at D10 to keep out the riffraff. #atd10 http://twitpic.com/9qq0fzSimon Racioppa

I was looking for Tim Cook at #ATD10, instead I found this giant owl. #timindisguise? #apple http://pic.twitter.com/oVieAIdELance Ulanoff

But Zeus wasn’t the only eye-grabber. Registrants also enjoyed the welcome reception and — of course — the items in their swag bags:

At the #d10 conference drinking cucumber water…so LA ;) (Checked in at Terranea Resort) http://www.facebook.com/TerraneaStefan Weitz

One of the more unusual items in the #atd10 swag bag! Not my size – either!http://ow.ly/i/EY4oBernard Gershon

Weirdest part of the #D10 gift bag? Lace panties. http://pic.twitter.com/mQsb6F7YMatt MacInnis

Outside Terranea’s main ballroom, D attendees gathered for yet another reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres:

undefinedInstagram

BODY GUARD :) Apple’s CEO with the good ‘ole Mossberg “@allthingsd Half an hour to go…#ATD10 @ahess247: Tim and Walt. http://instagr.am/p/LOuFP6A4oJ/””Tim Chaten

Must be a tech conference: plenty of geeks and no way to get on WiFi. #D10Troy Wolverton

The evening’s main event began with a big celebration for the D conference’s 10th anniversary, starting with…

JANE LYNCH!!!! #atd10A. Li

Jane Lynch makes a cameo at #atd10 conference. http://pic.twitter.com/OwtD6Chsmkung

…followed by gospel choir, a marching band, and (why not?) a confetti cannon.

"A Hard Day’s Night" being sung onstage by a gospel choir right now. If ever there were an appropriate song. #d10Alexia Tsotsis

undefinedInstagram

Hard act for #TimCook to follow at #D10. Full marching band: Saints go marching in…. http://yfrog.com/khyr1zfjJulia Boorstin

‘Modernist Cuisine’ mastermind Nathan Myhrvold post- #ATD10 glitterbomb. http://pic.twitter.com/VDZMi10xmkung

Some attendees were a bit perplexed.

What in the world. #d10Kenneth Donegan

…And then we were off, with the start of D and Tim Cook’s appearance as the conference’s first guest:

Live: Apple CEO Tim Cook’s First Time in the Hot Seat at DWhile he has presided over a number of events since taking over as Apple CEO last year, Tuesday night promises to offer a new look inside…

undefinedInstagram

undefinedInstagram

Cook’s answers included a renaissance of his now-famous “fridge toaster” joke…

Tim Cook: No refrigerator/toaster coming next week #D10Jon Fortt

Personally, I really want a toaster built into my Fridge. = Much increased productivity thank you very much Tim Cook. #D10Ryan Daws

Cook: Tablets Shouldn’t Be Burdened by PC LegacyApple has dominated the tablet market since it first debuted the iPad, fending off all attempts to unseat it. Soon the company will face …

…an appreciation of the importance of secrecy and changing your opinions, as learned from Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs…

“We’re going to double down on secrecy on products” HOLY #ATD10Muffin Man

It takes courage to change and say you were wrong & take a new position, Steve Jobs had that courage – Tim Cook #ATD10FashionweekNYC

Steve Jobs Was An Awesome Flip-Flopper, Says Tim CookWhat did Steve Jobs teach Tim Cook? The Apple CEO has a list of lessons, and he shared some onstage at D10 tonight. But he seemed most im…

..Apple’s position on manufacturing in China vs. in the U.S…

Tim Cook: "It may" say "assembled in the United States" on the back of an Apple product some day #D10Jon Fortt

Interesting how Cook makes the "made in china" issue about American workers skill set and not about affordability. #atd10Darin Bartholomew

Sent from an iPhone, which has several parts manufactured in the U.S. Guessing that’s at the bottom of @inafried’s next signature! #atd10triciad

Cook on Apple’s Role in China and Manufacturing: "I Hope People Rip Us Off Blindly"Apple is one of the most secretive companies in the world, keeping its product knowledge away from competitors and close to the chest. Bu…

…and Apple’s recent patent wars with Oracle.

Cook: Patent wars are "A pain in the ass." #ATD10 $AAPLArik Hesseldahl

"We just want people to develop their own stuff, and not rip us off." Tim Cook at #ATD10 talking about #PatentWarsScott Graham

Yeah! Let’s get Nathan Myrhvold on stage with Tim Cook to discuss patent wars! #atd10triciad

Patent Wars Are "Pain in the Ass," Says Tim CookAre patent wars a problem for innovation? Asked that question at during the opening session of D10 Tuesday night, Apple CEO had a simple …

undefinedInstagram

Overall, D10 attendees in the audience and following along online seemed impressed with Tim’s performance:

For someone as different from Jobs as is possible, Cook is deftly controlling his messages. #ATD10Lois Paul

I really like Tim Cook. He seems to be answering these questions in very a Steve Jobs esque manner, no nonsense, with a little humor #ATD10Scott Graham

Tim Cook is an excellent speaker and very good at managing the interviewers. Walt & Kara. Uses "stay tuned" a lot. #atd10Doug Bennett

Tim Cook is on fire at #d10. Very, very impressedAJ.Müni

I already did! RT @Jason: After watching this keynote I want to put every dollar I have into $aapl cook is phenomenal communicator #d10JasonRaznick

And when it came to Apple’s role in the future of TV and social media, Cook was (perhaps surprisingly) upfront:

Walt to Cook on Apple TV: "You’re not doing everything you could do."Cook: "I agree." #ATD10Parth Dhebar

Apple TV Sales Have Doubled, But It’s Still An Experiment, Say Tim CookTim Cook won’t say a word about his Apple TV plans. But he is willing explain what he thinks about his current Apple TV product: It’s a l…

Tim Cook: "Does Apple Need to Be Social? Yes."Facebook created the definitive social network. Google followed suit with Google+. So must Apple create its own version of a social netwo…

However, on other issues, he was less direct:

Kara asks if there will be more acquisitions under Tim Cook. He gives Non answer, answer. #atd10stacygreen

Tim Cook on basically anything: "It’s good, but it’ll get better. We think you’ll like what we’re working on." Well, thanks. #D10John Burke

#atd10 Apple CEO Tim Cook has made NO news, but he is charming and spell-binding! @karaswisher & @waltmossberg get A’s for effort!Bernard Gershon

Cook’s way of dodging a question is to ask for the next one. #atd10Poornima Gupta

And Tim Cook lifted his mask and there was Steve. #ATD10Riccardo Mori

Tim Cook masterclass in CEO evasion and cliches at #ATD10Dan Gillmor

My new nickname for Tim Cook after tonight’s #atd10 interview: the artful dodger. Just told him so. He laughed.Cathy Brooks

Tim Cook on Apple and Facebook: "Stay Tuned."Anyone with an iPhone knows how cozy Apple and Twitter are; tweeting is integrated into iOS’ blood. Conspicuously absent from Apple’s iOS…

The award for most bitingly funny tweet reactions during Cook’s interview goes to Glenn Fleishman:

Cook: “If you walked in my office you’d see Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King.” Jesus. He had them stuffed? #ATD10 #toosoonGlenn Fleishman

Q: “Mr. Cook, we all admire Apple and think that QUICK WHAT’S THE PIN FOR YOUR PHONE!” #ATD10Glenn Fleishman

Cook: “Our strategy is to make customers so mad they scream, but have no alternative.” I’m paraphrasing. #ATD10Glenn Fleishman

The big take-away of the night, though, were the new Apple CEO’s two favorite phrases: “stay tuned” and “double down.”

Phrase of the day at #atd10 ? "Doubling down"Darin Bartholomew

And from there, it was on to dinner and a nightcap reception:

undefinedInstagram

Stay tuned for more tweets, pictures, and audience commentary tomorrow!

Cook, as Steve Jobs did several times during his career, is taking the stage at D: All Things Digital for an in-depth sit-down with Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg. Cook’s appearance will kick off the conference, which runs through Thursday in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

There’s a ton to talk about, from Cook’s vision for the company to Apple’s plans for the living room and his views on China’s labor practices.

The onstage interview won’t be livestreamed, but AllThingsD will have live coverage starting around 6:30 pm PT.

5:48 pm: Tim Cook probably won’t hit the stage until close to 6:30, but there will be some fun opening festivities once the conference kicks off at 6 pm.

So grab a beverage and come back to your computer, tablet, e-reader or other device of choice.

6:00 pm: The crowd is being asked to take a seat.

6:07 pm: Things are kicking off with News Corp. COO Chase Carey.

Carey notes that it has been 20 years of Walt Mossberg’s tech column, 10 years of D: All Things Digital, and five years of AllThingsD.

6:09 pm: And here come Walt and Kara, preceded by clips from the first nine D conferences.

Man, Kara has had some great hairstyles over the years.

Interesting trivia: The signature onstage chairs have been there since the first year; they were black at D1, and red ever since.

6:12 pm: Now the real Walt and Kara take the stage.

“That was like a cavalcade of bad haircuts for me,” Kara says.

To celebrate 10 years, they bring out a Safeway cake (missing a piece), along with a party popper.

“That’s crappy,” Kara says.

We are unimpressed, Kara tells the actor.

Out comes Jane Lynch, harassing Rupert Murdoch for his poor planning.

“I have a backup plan, as I always do,” Lynch says.

Cue the gospel choir. Yes, we have an actual gospel choir kicking off D10. That’s how we roll.

They are singing an amazing rendition of the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night.”

I think this is a sign that Apple will announce a deal with the Beatles. Oh wait, they already did that.

6:19 pm: Naturally, now there is a marching band.

It’s a marching band from a local high school in Palos Verdes, Calif., playing “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Now, this is an entrance.

6:20 pm: More trivia: The person who brought out the original dud of a cake was actor Larry Scott, who played Lamar Latrell in the “Revenge of the Nerds” movies.

Jane Lynch intros her good friend “Kate” — er, Kara — along with Walt.

6:22 pm: And here he is: Apple CEO Tim Cook.

“I would have never agreed to follow that act if you had told me,” Cook says.

On his time as Apple CEO: “I’m loving every minute of it.”

He says he’s never been as amazed by all “the things I cannot talk about today.”

“The juices are flowing, and we have some incredible things coming out.”

6:25 pm: Cook talks about the reception that the iPad is getting from people of all ages, across consumers, business and education.

The iPad has just been unbelievable. “It’s just the first inning. It’s only been two years.”

As for the Mac, it continues to outgrow the market, quarter after quarter.

Walt notes that is, admittedly, from a small base.

“We’re never going to make the most personal computers. I don’t see that. But we are going to continue to make the best.”

6:26 pm: Cook credits the iPod for introducing many, many people to the Mac.

Cook notes that was largely just in the developed world, but the iPhone is what took the company into China, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Russia.

“The world opened, all of a sudden.”

The iPad is continuing that.

“The world has met Apple,” he says, adding that it is just the first question.

So what’s the second inning? What’s on tap for Apple’s developers conference?

“That’s a great question,” Cook says. “I’m not going to answer it.”

He does promise that people will like it.

Cook reckons that there are a lot of people who use their iPad more than their computer. Cook says he does, and he loves his Mac.

6:29 pm: Walt points out that Microsoft is taking a different approach, putting a single operating system on tablets, PCs and devices that are a hybrid of the two. What’s wrong with that?

Cook: “In my view, the tablet and the PC are different. You can do things with the tablet if you are not encumbered by the legacy of the PC.”

Cook says that isn’t the only way to do tablets, but says Apple’s approach doesn’t require all that.

“We didn’t invent the tablet market,” he notes. “It was there. We invented the modern tablet.”

Cook says that supporting the past requires lifting leg weights.

“Products are about trade-offs, and you have to make tough decisions. You have to choose.”

Microsoft, for its part, has pitched Windows 8 as a “no-compromise” operating system.

6:32 pm: Cook makes his analogy of merging the toaster and the refrigerator, saying that someone may merge the two, but it won’t be Apple. That’s not what is coming next week, he says.

If you merge the two, the PC isn’t as good as it can be; nor is the tablet.

6:33 pm: Walt: How is Apple different with you as the CEO?

“I learned a lot from Steve. It was absolutely the saddest day of my life when he passed away.”

“At some point late last year, I sort of — somebody kind of shook me and said, ‘It’s time to get on.’” That sadness was replaced by his intense determination to continue the journey.

6:34 pm: What did I learn from him? Focus.

“You can only do so many things great, and you should cast aside everything else.”

Cook says that not accepting things good or very good, but only the best, “that’s embedded in Apple.”

“I’m not going to witness or permit the change of that.”

“He also taught me the joy is in the journey, and that was a revelation for me.”

Cook also made a reference to the fact that Jobs stressed the importance of owning the key underlying technologies.

As for moving on, Cook says: “I love museums, but I don’t want to live in one.”

6:37 pm: Cook says he is committed to preserving the culture of Apple.

“It is not that easy to duplicate, either,” Cook says.

“If they could, everybody would be like this,” Cook says. “You can’t get a consultant report” and change to be like Apple.

6:38 pm: Cook says that Jobs told him not to ask what Steve would have done.

“He looked at me with those intense eyes that only he had, and said, ‘Just do what’s right.’”

“I’m doing that. Does that mean some things would be different? Of course. But he was the best person at doing that.”

Cook notes that Jobs was well known for doing a 180-degree turn if needed, without ever letting on that he had advocated the opposite.

6:40 pm: One of the things Apple has done is start an employee charity donation matching program.

Cook says that he subscribes to the notion that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Matching employee donations allows Apple to do good without having to form lots of committees, etc.

“I think we can do even more, so we are looking at some things. Maybe that is a change.”

Cook says Jobs knew about that program before he died. “He was for it.”

He notes Apple will invest a lot in new products and stores and other things he won’t talk about.

“We’ve got a little bit left over, and we should share it.”

So will Apple be less secret? Walt asks.

“We’re going to double down on secrecy on products,” Cook says. But with other things, he says, Apple will be the most transparent company. Supplier reponsibility, environmental issues, etc.

“In this area, I want people to copy us.”

6:43 pm: On China, Kara notes, you have many critics, and not just fictional ones (a reference to Mike Daisey). Why doesn’t Apple have its own factories in China?

Cook: We decided a decade ago there were things Apple could do best, and that there were other things that somebody else can do as well or better.

“Manufacturing was one of those,” Cook says, adding later, “I think that’s still true.”

As for China, Cook notes that Apple has been working to reduce overtime. That, he says, is tricky.

“Some people want to work a lot. They want to move and work for a year or two, and then move back to their village and bring back as much money as they can.”

Apple, he says, now has 95 percent compliance, and is tracking 700,000 workers in China.

“I don’t know anyone else [that] is doing this,” Cook says. “We’re micromanaging this.”

6:46 pm: Walt notes that Apple used to have factories in the U.S. He asks if Apple ever envisions having big manufacturing in the U.S.

“I want there to be,” Cook says.

This is not well known, Cook says, but the engines for the iPhone and the iPad are built in the U.S., in Austin, Texas. The glass is made in a plant in Kentucky.

There’s an intense focus on the final assembly, Cook says, but a lot of the value is in the different materials.

On the assembly piece, could that be done in the U.S.? “I hope so, someday,” Cook says, but he notes that the tool-and-die industry has shrunk dramatically.

“There are things we can do, and that’s what we are working on,” Cook says. “We should do more semiconductor things in the U.S.”

6:51 pm: One thing that has changed a lot since the first D conference, Cook says, is the explosion of mobile apps, which he says is a huge industry that has grown up in the U.S.

“It’s big enough to be in the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

So, Kara asks, why be in the computer business?

“I don’t see the tablet replacing the need for all PCs,” Cook says. But, he notes, it may slow the replacement cycle for computers.

Kara asks about the patent wars. Is it a problem for innovation?

“Well, it is a pain in the ass,” Cook says.

He says Apple can’t afford to paint a painting and then have someone else sign their name to it.

“From our point of view, it is important for Apple not be the developer for the world,” Cook says. “We just want other people to invent their own stuff.”

Walt: But lots of folks are suing Apple, too.

Cook acknowledges that, but says there is a difference.

“The vast majority of those are on standards-essential patents,” Cook says. “This is an area where the patent system is broken today.”

Microsoft has a similar beef with Motorola.

“No one should be able to get an injunction off a standards-essential patent,” he says.

Apple has not sued anyone over standards-essential patents that we own, Cook says. This was never the intention of a standards-essential patent.

If you add up all the money that people feel they are owed for such patents, he says, no one could afford to be in the phone business.

“It’s kind of gotten crazy,” Cook says. “It’s not going to stop us from innovating, but it’s overhead. It’s overhead that I wish didn’t exist.”

Apple recently had court-ordered settlement talks with Samsung, but Cook says he couldn’t comment on those, per the magistrate’s order.

Kara: So what do you think of Google’s painting? Cook demurs: “I love Apple’s painting,” he says.

6:58 pm: How do you look at competitive landscape when it comes to smartphones? Kara asks.

“I wouldn’t say we dominate it,” he says. “I’d say we have the best phone.”

There are two big ones, Android and iOS, Cook says. Windows Phone is just really coming to the market, he says.

“We’ll see how they do.”

Then you have RIM, which is still serving some large number of enterprise customers. The momentum right now are in the first two.

“Will that change? Anything can change. The smartphone revolution is still in the early stages.”

It’s a huge opportunity still, he says, noting that in a few years there will be few phones that aren’t smartphones.

7:01 pm: Walt notes that Android makers are focusing on fewer models than in the past.

“I wonder where they got that idea,” Cook says.

What about Apple? Walt says, noting that it only has one new iPhone at a time, as contrasted with the Mac and iPad. Why don’t you have more than one iPhone and more than one iPad? And is there any chance you might?

“Our North Star is to make the best product,” Cook says, adding that Apple doesn’t design products for schedules. “There’s not a policy or commandment that says ‘Thou shalt have One.’”

“If we find that we can do more, great.”

Cook notes that Apple’s approach avoids fragmentation, with one screen size and one App Store with one policy.

7:04 pm: Walt: Why not make a $99 iPhone?

“Who knows what we will do in the future?” Cook says. “I am not going to conjecture.”

He says that with the iPod, Apple didn’t set out to cover all the price points, but instead found it could build a lot of great products. That, he says, was the result, but not the goal.

“Whenever we can do fantastic products and they yield great price points,” that’s great, he says.

7:06 pm: Kara turns to another topic: TV. Steve Jobs talked a lot in his last appearance here about wanting to change TV.

Cook notes that Apple has stayed in the Apple TV business, even without a huge hit.

“We’re not a hobby kind of company, as you know.” The company tends to put a lot of wood behind a few arrows. “We’ve stuck in this.”

“It’s not a fifth leg of the stool. It’s not of the same market size as the phone business or the Mac business or the music business or the tablet business.”

Apple sold 2.8 million Apple TV devices last year, and has sold nearly that many in the first few months of this year.

“This is an area of intense interest for us,” Cook says.

“We are going to keep pulling the string and see where this takes us,” Cook says.

7:09 pm: Walt: What about a TV set?

Cook: “You were right. I’m not going to tell you.”

Walt: Hypothetically, can TV be improved with just a box, and leaving the panel to others?

Cook: “We would look not just at this area, but other areas, and ask, can we control the key technology? Can we make a significant contribution far beyond what others have done in this area? Can we make a product that we all want? … Those are all the things we would ask about any new product category.”

Kara: Is Apple TV good enough?

Cook: It’s more something where you keep pulling the string to see where it goes.

Walt and Cook disagree over whether there is or isn’t a lot of content on there.

Walt says that Apple is not solving every problem with the current Apple TV.

“I agree,” Cook says

“Kara, what question did you have?” Cook says, hoping to change the topic.

Kara: How is your relationship with Hollywood?

“We have very good relationships with the content owners,” Cook says. “We don’t want their stuff to be ripped off.”

Apple, he says, took the same approach with music. Cook notes that there was a generation that didn’t think it should have to pay for music, but that would have led to no artists.

Plus, of Hollywood, he says, “These guys have been buying Macs forever. There is a level of trust in those relationships. Steve brought us even closer because he also owned a content business for a while [Pixar].”

Kara: What is their biggest complaint of Apple?

“I don’t know,” Cook says. “I’ve met with several of them recently. They were talking about what more we could do with them,” rather than some issue.

7:16 pm: Walt: Are you working on some new kind of content business?

Cook: “Kara, what question did you have?”

Kara repeats Walt’s question.

“I don’t think Apple has to own a content business,” Cook says. “We haven’t had an issue, for the most part, getting content.”

“This is an area where Apple partnering well is the right approach.”

The best thing Apple can do, Cook says, is make a great vehicle for selling content. “The consumer loves it because they can get it where they want it, when they want it.”

7:18 pm: Walt asks about Facebook integration.

“Facebook is a great company. I have great appreciation for them.”

Walt: But yet Twitter is integrated and Facebook is not. Why not?

“I think the relationship is very solid,” Cook says. “We have great respect for them. I think we can do more with them. Just stay tuned on this one.”

Are they still onerous to work with?

“They have their way of doing things, but people could say the same thing about us.”

“Because you have a point of view doesn’t mean you can’t work with someone.”

Kara: Do you see more acquisitions in the future?

“We continue to buy companies,” Cook says. “They are not ones we seek to make public.”

Kara: Don’t you have to, eventually?

“It depends on the amount. If I don’t have to, I won’t.”

That’s part of the doubling down on secrecy.

Kara: Did you look at Instagram?

“We didn’t look at Instagram.”

As for other big ones?

“I wouldn’t rule it out. We’re not looking at a big one right now, but I wouldn’t rule it out.”

We haven’t bought a company for revenue stream, he says.

“It’s not how we are wired,” he says.

Walt notes Apple bought Siri, which actually demoed at D before Apple acquired them. Siri, Walt says, is great when it works, but it doesn’t work a lot of the time. That’s not what a lot of people have come to think about Apple products. What’s going on with that?

Cook: “Customers love it. It’s one of the most popular features of iPhone 4S. But there’s more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this. And I think you will be really pleased with some of the things you’ll see over the coming months on this. We have some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this.”

Kara: Is voice critical for the phone?

Cook: Voice, where it understands the context, is powerful.

“I think Siri has proven to us that people want to relate to the phone in a different way.”

What makes Siri cool, Cook says, is she has a personality.

“I think you are going to be really pleased with where we take Siri.”

“Is it going to be bossier?” Kara asks.

“Is that what you are looking for?” Cook says.

“Always,” Kara says.

Cook says he would put it in the category of “profound.” It’s the artificial intelligence piece, he says.

“This is something that people dreamed of for years, I think, and it is here. Yes, it can be broader and so forth, but we see unbelievable potential here.”

“We’re doubling down on it.”

7:27 pm: Kara: What do you do all day? What do you see your role at Apple as on a daily basis, and are you a visionary?

Cook: “Steve was a genius and a visionary. … He’s an irreplaceable person. Steve was an original, and I don’t think there is another one of those being made. I’ve never felt the weight of trying to be Steve. It’s not who I am, and it’s not my goal in life.”

I spend my day working with teams on various products, including “some things we didn’t talk about, and maybe some things you wanted to talk about.”

“It is my oxygen, that’s how strongly I feel about it.”

7:30 pm: Who’s the curator at Apple these days? Walt asks.

Cook: “We have a privilege, because if I look around the executive team, many of the people are people I have been working with for double-digit years.” We all get along well, Cook says.

No one person can do it all, Cook says.

“You could have an ‘S’ on your chest and a cape on your back, and not be able to do it all.”

Cook says, “I wouldn’t get overly focused on who does what piece.” There’s a lot of key people, and there have always been a lot of key people.

Kara: What’s your goal? Make a trillion dollars, create your version of the CIA?

“I just want to build great products,” Cook says. “I think if we do that, then the other things follow.”

Companies can get lost, he says, focusing on revenue, profit or stock price.

“You have to focus on the things that lead to those,” he says.

7:33 pm: What do you look up to? Is there a person or a company?

Cook: “If you walked in my office, you would see Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. If you are talking about CEOs that are living … I have incredible respect for Bob Iger and what he has done at Disney. (Iger is on Apple’s board.)

7:34 pm: On to Q&A.

7:35 pm: First question: Apple used to have big discounts for education.

Cook: “There is still a discount for institutions, and for individuals.” Apple has also done things at back-to-school time, with a special offer. “We are going to keep doing that,” Cook says.

Those discounts added up to $750 million last year, Cook says. “It’s not an insignificant amount.”

He also pointed to the work Apple is doing with its free iTunes U courseware. Apple also launched the iBook creation tool in January that Apple is giving away for free.

“Today’s textbook is dog-eared and seven years old and behind the times,” Cook says, adding that education has been a key focus of Apple since its earliest days.

7:37 pm: Next question from Fortune’s Adam Lashinsky, who just wrote a Tim Cook cover story for the magazine, presumably without an interview.

“It’s nice to be able to ask you a question,” Lashinsky says.

What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses as a CEO and person?

“I’ll leave that for you,” Cook says.

He follows up, asking if Cook is as involved on design and marketing.

Cook says no; that Steve spent more time in those areas.

“I would say I am spending time in several areas, not exclusively those two,” Cook says.

7:39 pm: What about Apple using so much bandwidth? As very few companies supply that, does Apple need more control of that?

Cook: “Do I think we need to own a carrier or the pipe? No. I don’t think we need to do that.”

Cook noted that the vast majority of Apple’s business is outside the U.S.

“Owning something just in the U.S. would not have great value in our total worldwide footprint. I really think that guys that have it know a lot more about it. This is their area of expertise. … I want to make great devices and use some of the bandwidth. I think we can partner with the pipe owner.”

7:41 pm: What did Steve say to you to encourage you to join Apple when you did, and did you see Apple becoming what it has become?

“It was a very interesting meeting. Steve had hired an executive search firm to find someone to run operations. I had gotten a call a few times, and said no. They kept calling, and they kept calling.”

He flew out Friday on a red-eye for a Saturday morning meeting. “Five minutes into the conversation, I am wanting to join Apple. I am shocked at this, because it wasn’t what I envisioned at all.”

“He was taking Apple deeply into consumer at a time when others were doing the opposite.”

“I have never thought following the herd is a good strategy. You are destined to be average, at best.”

Also, he says, he was impressed that Jobs wasn’t focused on money.

“I thought, I am going to throw caution to the wind and do this,” Cook says, adding he resigned immediately from his former job.

He can’t say that he saw iPhone and iPad coming, but he saw the passion in Apple customers, as well. They might get mad, but they stayed loyal.

“An Apple customer was a unique breed.”

7:45 pm: How does Apple name products, like iPad to iPad 2 to iPad?

“A lot of people ask me that about iPad,” Cook says. Cook notes that the same thing happened with iPod, with iPod mini, iPod nano, and then started just updating those.

Others are like that too, he says, pointing to the iMac and MacBook Air.

Of course, the company has done things differently with the iPhone.

“You can do it either way, is the real story,” Cook says.

The iPhone, for example, went from 3G to 3GS, with the letter “S” connoting speed. In 4 to 4S, the “S” stood more for Siri.

Kara: What about the iPhone 5?

Cook: “Who had the next question?”

7:49 pm: What has been the biggest challenge in the post-Steve Jobs era?

Cook: He knew everyone well, and it was a culture that he loved. “All of the things that maybe a CEO coming into a new company would see, I didn’t have any of those challenges.”

Once named CEO, Cook started getting thousands of emails per day. The privilege of it is that most of them are from customers. “They talk to you as if you are sitting in their living room.”

That, he says, was a bit of a surprise. He had been getting hundreds. Today, he says, it is a privilege. Especially since he doubts it is like that somewhere else.

“I can’t say anything (else) has surprised me,” he says.

7:51 pm: Thoughts on wearable computing and Google’s project glass. Also, what about pen computing?

Cook: “Wearable: I have on a Nike Fuel Band. I think there are some cool things that can be done. I think it is an interesting area. The question is, can it change somebody’s behavior? The book hasn’t been written on that yet.”

If it is just a cool thing, to know if it will fade, but if it can change behavior, more to it.

As for pen computing: “I sort of like what we are doing right now,” Cook says.

7:53 pm: What about the gaming space? You’ve sort of fallen into being a big player in the gaming space. Do you see big-screen gaming as something you’ll get more into?

Cook: I view that we are in gaming now in a fairly big way. One of the reasons people buy an iPod touch is gaming. Some buy it for music. I realize that is not the big screen you are talking about. Gaming has kind of evolved a bit. More people play on portable devices. Where we might go in the future, we’ll see. Customers love games.

I’m not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming. But Apple is a big player today, and things in the future will only make that bigger.

But what about the TV?

“I think it could be interesting,” Cook says.

7:57 pm: What about all the press Apple gets, including enthusiast sites?

It’s largely a privilege. Does he want company secrets printed on a Web site? No. But he likes the attention and passion.

7:58 pm: Google guy asks why Apple is getting into the advertising business.

“Well, iAd would be pretty small next to your business,” Cook says.

Google guy: “We know that.”

Cook notes that advertising wasn’t one of the four legs of Apple’s stool. I don’t see it at the same level as the other things in our company.

“We’re a product company,” he says. “That’s what we are.”

How does “iAd” match with “focus”? Google guy asks.

Cook: “So you want me to get out of the iAd business. I hope the FTC is not here.”

Walt: The chairman is here.

Cook: “I don’t have any other comment.”

8:00 pm: What about Ping? Will Apple do more social, or was that the last of it?

Cook: “Apple doesn’t have to own a social network, but does Apple have to be social? Yes.”

You’ll see us integrate Twitter into the Mac OS as we introduce Mountain Lion. Game Center and iMessage could be thought of as social.

8:01 pm: What happened to Ping?

Cook: I was carefully avoiding that. We tried Ping, and I think the customer voted and said “This isn’t something that I want to put a lot of energy into.”

Will we kill it? I don’t know. We’ll look at that.

Kara: You could totally sell it to Google+.

8:02 pm: The New York Times’ Nick Bilton asks Kara and Walt how they think the interview is going, and how it compares with Steve Jobs’s interview.

Kara and Walt leave it up to others to judge.

Interview wraps.
