<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-150106" title="xbox_dash_search" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/xbox_dash_search.png" alt="" width="380" height="285" />In a statement to <strong>All Things D</strong>, Microsoft said: &#8220;We are still working to get the release out. Stay tuned, we&#8217;ll have an update this afternoon on when it will begin rolling out.&#8221;</p>
<p>(<strong>Update:</strong> By late afternoon, Microsoft said <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111206/delays-force-microsoft-to-roll-out-major-xbox-update-in-phases/">the rollout would begin gradually in a few hours</a>.)</p>
<p>The free over-the-air software update was due to hit the Xbox this morning.</p>
<p>As part of the update, the Xbox is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111204/heres-how-microsoft-is-adding-voice-control-and-gestures-to-the-xbox-video/">getting a major face-lift</a> that would give users the ability to control the interface with the Kinect using voice and gestures.</p>
<p>It also aims to turn the game console into an entertainment hub for the living room through the addition of several new content deals that will provide access to more movies and TV.</p>
<p>The delay was first reported by Xbox employee <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/majornelson">Larry Hryb</a>, who goes by @majornelson on Twitter. At roughly 7 am PT, he tweeted: &#8220;FYI: The timing for Xbox 360 dashboard update has been slightly delayed. I’ll have a status update later today.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a follow-up tweet, he added: &#8220;I&#8217;ll share additional details when I have more to share. Until then, thanks for you patience.&#8221;</p>

<p>Salesforce.com has bought Manymoon, the social productivity start-up.</p>
<p>The price of the acquisition was not disclosed, but one source put the sale at between $25 million and $35 million.</p>
<p>Manymoon makes one of the more <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100309/manymoon-and-50-others-join-new-google-apps-marketplace-heres-a-video-interview-with-the-founders">popular tools on Google&#8217;s apps platform</a>.</p>
<p>The San Francisco company, funded with only a small seed funding round by Harrison Metal, offers an online collaboration app that businesses and consumers can use to organize group projects, conversations, tasks or documents that are often done via email or other software.</p>
<p>Manymoon is rather typical of the innovative app makers the search giant has been courting to populate its marketplace.</p>
<p>Salesforce.com has been moving aggressively into social networking in the enterprise arena with its Chatter offering and more.</p>
<p>Earlier today, in fact, it was also part of a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110201/seesmic-raises-from-4-million-in-funding-salesforce/">$4 million funding of Seesmic</a>, the social dashboard app maker.</p>

<p>In an interesting social enterprise move, popular social networking collaboration tool Seesmic is taking a $4 million investment from Salesforce.com, as well as from Softbank.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based Seesmic has one of the top desktop and also mobile applications for monitoring a consumer&#8217;s various feeds from Twitter, Facebook and more.</p>
<p>So far, Seesmic has received $16 million in total funding. Other investors include Atomico, Omidyar Network and Wellington Partners.</p>
<p>Moving beyond a consumer app, where it has one million registered users, Seesmic has also worked closely with Salesforce.com on integrating its Chatter social enterprise network offering.</p>
<p>Deeper integration with Chatter and bridging more social communications with its customers is coming, said Seemsic founder and CEO Lo&iuml;c Le Meur.</p>
<p>&#8220;It becomes an amazing internal dashboard if you are a manager,&#8221; said Le Meur in an interview with BoomTown this morning. &#8220;It has everything we have built for consumers, but internally.&#8221;</p>
<p>There are many such apps and software-based services being developed to inject social into the enterprise, including Yammer, Socialcast and Jive.</p>
<p>It will also be interesting to see if the investment is a prelude to an acquisition by Salesforce.com, to further bolster its own efforts in socializing the workplace.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In its iconic &#8220;1984&#8243; Super Bowl ad for the Macintosh, Apple went after IBM, pitching itself as an alternative to a monoculture of cookie-cutter computers. Fast-forward 27 years and Motorola is trying to use the same approach to attack Apple.<br />

In a Super Bowl teaser ad posted to YouTube on Monday, Motorola pitches its forthcoming Xoom tablet as an alternative to Apple&#8217;s iPad.</p>
<p>&#8220;2011 looks a lot like 1984,&#8221; Motorola says in the ad, which features an image of the Earth surrounded by Apple&#8217;s white headphones. &#8220;One authority. One design. One way to work. It&#8217;s time for more choices.&#8221;</p>
<p>The ad then touts some of the Xoom&#8217;s features, such as its dual-core chip, HD video playback, front- and rear-facing cameras and its ability to play Flash.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/tablets-flying-fast-and-furious-at-ces/">tablet wars are clearly heating up</a>, with all the players staking out their space. RIM also <a href="http://bizblog.blackberry.com/2011/01/blackberry-playbook-business-video/">posted a video on its Web site</a>, touting the business capabilities of its yet-to-be-released PlayBook tablet. The video shows the PlayBook being connected to a BlackBerry and using a Flash-enabled dashboard from SAP&#8217;s Business Objects unit. RIM plans to talk more about its developer plans at an event on Thursday in San Francisco.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Google is <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110128/google-to-show-off-honeycomb-next-week/">hosting an event on Wednesday</a> to go deeper into its tablet-oriented Honeycomb version of Android. The Xoom, which debuts next month, is to be the first device running Honeycomb.</p>
<p>Mobilized will be on hand to provide coverage of both the RIM and Google events.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Twitter does indeed plan to <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110126/twitter-testing-self-serve-ads-for-launch-this-year/">roll out a self-serve ad platform</a>, a la Facebook and Google, this year. But it hasn&#8217;t done so yet, isn&#8217;t testing one and has yet to build the thing.</p>
<p>So says Twitter, which is publicly calling out a <a href="http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&amp;art_aid=143626">MediaPost</a> report published yesterday in which writer Laurie Sullivan said she had gotten a look at a test version of the platform, via <a href="http://www.clixmarketing.com/index.htm">Clix Marketing</a>, an online ad buying shop.</p>
<p>Twitter says what Sullivan actually saw was the dashboard tool that Twitter provides all of its advertisers to give them an update on how their ads are performing and allow them to make tweaks to their campaigns. But Twitter ad buyers still have to work with humans, for now, either directly at Twitter or via intermediaries that do so, like Clix.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the official statement from spokesman Matt Graves: &#8220;Reports that Twitter is testing a self-serve ad platform are inaccurate. Our self-serve ad product will launch later this year.&#8221;</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve reached out to MediaPost for comment.</p>

But the company says it can help papers wring more money out of the stuff they&#8217;re already making.</p>
<p>That pitch has been enough to raise $19 million for the Pasedena, Calif.-based company, and now it has added another $9 million in a round led by Comcast&#8217;s venture capital arm. Earlier investors Idealab, Rustic Canyon Partners, Tribune Company and Trinity Ventures have all re-upped as well.</p>
<p><a href="http://perfectmarket.com/">Perfect Market</a>&#8216;s main offering is a service that hosts big publishers&#8217; old stories in a Google-friendly way, and sells ads against the archived content. The very short pitch: Why let Demand Media and its ilk get all the search ad dollars?</p>
<p>Things are getting more interesting now, though, as the company rolls out analytics and a dashboard that is supposed to help writers and editors figure out how to make the stories they&#8217;re writing now make more money in the future, via SEO-like tips.</p>
<p>And they&#8217;ll get very interesting down the road, as Perfect Market gives writers and editors the ability to help choose stories that are more likely to generate ad revenue down the line.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s either cunning or creepy, or maybe both, but the company isn&#8217;t there yet. It has been testing a version of its analytics package with the Tribune-owned Orlando Sentinel, and says it is working on a 2.0 version of its software for release this year. We&#8217;ll check back with the company later on&#8230;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This holiday season, the war against couch potatoes wages on with Microsoft&#8217;s Xbox Kinect, the latest in motion-sensing video-game consoles. While the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation Move encourage people to stand and play games using familiar gestures and simple controllers, Kinect encourages people to motion their way through games and screens using their bodies as controllers.</p>

<p>Kinect (<a href="http://xbox.com/kinect">xbox.com/kinect</a>), a rectangular strip of four microphones, a 3-D sensor and a video camera, is $150 for those who own the Xbox 360. It&#8217;s sold in a $300 bundle with the 4-gigabyte Xbox 360 console; $400 with a 250-gigabyte console. (Sony&#8217;s PlayStation Move is $100 without the console and $400 when bundled with the 320-gigabyte PS3; Nintendo&#8217;s Wii costs $200.)All packages include the Kinect Adventures videogame. There are currently 17 games that work with Kinect, and each costs $50, $10 less than a standard Xbox game. </p>
<p>Kinect can sit on top of, below or beside the TV, plugging into a wall power outlet and the Xbox via a USB cord.The concept used by Kinect has potential far beyond games and might even become a new way of controlling computers of all kinds. </p>
<p>Thirteen of the 17 available Kinect games are rated E for Everyone, and the remaining four are rated T for Teens—a sign that Microsoft is going after a different crowd with Kinect than with its regular Xbox games, which offer a wide range of ratings, including violent games. </p>
<p>It automatically identifies who you are and  pauses when you leave its vicinity, so it isn&#8217;t hard to imagine this ingenuity controlling all kinds of devices, like a PC, smartphone or tablet.</p>
<p>Over the past few weeks, I played a variety of Kinect games with three other people in the room, one other person in the room and completely by myself. I tried it with a 46-inch, 1080p LCD TV as well as using an old standard-definition TV.</p>
<p>My experiences were mixed. Kinect works beautifully for activities that involve only your body, like exercise classes, running, jumping hurdles, yoga and dancing, with the moves feeling natural and fun. The motion sensor detects even slight movements to reflect what you&#8217;re doing on the TV screen. I battled my boyfriend in Dance Central while busting out dance moves called Double Dig &#8216;Ems and Headwrushes. I sprinted down a virtual track, running in place fast enough to earn a game world record. And I toned my arms and abdominals while punching floating boxes in the Your Shape&#8217;s kickboxing class. </p>
<p>But when it came to sports that involved holding or throwing objects like bowling, volleyball or discus, Kinect started to feel a little inauthentic, like I didn&#8217;t really have control over the object. When I threw a discus far enough in Kinect Sports to prompt the game&#8217;s commentator to shout, &#8220;Is that discus a part of the space program?&#8221; I didn&#8217;t know what I did to get that result. </p>
<p>The same was true for driving a car in Kinect&#8217;s Joy Ride game: Players are instructed to hold their hands like they would if they were gripping a steering wheel, turning left or right by moving hands accordingly and leaning back and quickly forward to get a burst of speed. But it&#8217;s hard to mimic a motion to accelerate, and I found myself jerking my body all around to get results. My arms also got tired after holding them up for awhile. </p>
<p>Other games, like Kinectimals and Kinect Adventures, play to the Kinect&#8217;s strengths by using broader gestures and fewer accuracy-focused tasks. With Kinectimals, I moved my hands to virtually scratch a Bengal tiger cub; the cub even became more familiar with me the more it listened to my voice. I rode a raft in Kinect Adventures by leaning left or right to steer through rapids, jumping up to grab on-screen coins for points and ducking to avoid getting clocked in the head with objects. </p>

<p>In certain games, two people can play simultaneously standing in front of Kinect. The system can identify and sign in up to eight people as they step in and out of play. It recognizes those who are signed into Xbox and playing, so only their gestures maintain control of navigation. Its sensor will identify and log you in a few seconds after you step in front of it. If you walk away in the middle of a game, Kinect will sense that you aren&#8217;t there and will pause the game. </p>
<p>Kinect isn&#8217;t yet fully integrated into the entire Xbox navigation system. Some tasks still require the old Xbox controller, like opening the Xbox Guide, a quick way of launching anything in the system. Xbox&#8217;s Dashboard, which is the first menu you see when you turn on the system, also requires the controller. The Dashboard is separate from Kinect Hub, which lets you use your voice and gestures to do things like opening the system&#8217;s disc tray, selecting menus or even pausing a movie—just by saying, &#8220;Xbox, pause.&#8221; A spokesman said Microsoft plans to integrate these commands throughout the Dashboard. For now, it&#8217;s tempting—but futile—to want to use voice and gesture on every screen. </p>
<p>Many Kinect games capture videos of you as you play games and then play them back for you at the end. The results are hilarious. Kinect Adventures gives you a heads-up so you can make an extra silly pose at the right moment. Kinect Sports compiles a highlight reel as you go, playing this video back at the end of your athletic events, goofy sport gestures and all. And Dance Central announces a freestyle dance for all players at the end of each round, capturing video snippets of these moves. Users who are signed into Xbox Live can share these videos with others.</p>

<p>Kinect can also be used to video chat with anyone who&#8217;s using Windows Live Messenger and a webcam.</p>
<p>I really enjoyed Dance Central—and not just because I won most of my dance battles (the one who gets the most moves correct wins). This game offered a large variety of songs ranging from old-school rap to Lady Gaga. Each dance was taught in a different virtual venue by an instructor who shouted words of encouragement or instruction, and cheers from the crowd spurred me on.</p>
<p>Navigating the menus in Kinect games is usually more enjoyable with gestures, though it takes a little longer than if you were pressing a controller button to skip ahead. In the Your Shape game, I selected from Personal Training, Fitness Classes and Gym Games using my arm to touch my selection and another red icon below that to confirm it. When I started this game, the sensor scanned my body to measure my height, arm length, leg length and shoulder span, thus customizing games just for me. </p>
<p>In the future, Kinect could use be used to recognize communities like a group of fans all wearing the same team colors while watching a game, in which case the system might display extra on-screen data for that supported team. Another example could include playing along with game shows from home, like reality TV for the masses.For now, Xbox Kinect does well with many games that mimic real-life gestures and motions. Games with specific actions using objects, like rolling a bowling ball, need work to feel more authentic.</p>

It wasn&#8217;t a &#8220;check-in” feature, a new iteration of Facebook Credits, a partnership with Skype or a showing of &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; with a frame-by-frame refutation by Mark Zuckerberg.  </p>
<p>In the end, it was <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=434691727130">a series of service enhancements</a>&#8211;three, to be exact, offering more-granular sharing controls, the ability to export your data and an apps dashboard.</p>
<p>&#8220;I promise we&#8217;re not going to talk today about anything that you&#8217;ve been reading in the news media,&#8221; CEO Mark Zuckerberg said this morning. &#8220;It&#8217;s something a lot more exciting.&#8221; </p>
<p>&#8220;One of the big challenges for us is making it safe and easy for people to take their information to other services,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;People own their information and they should be able to take it with them wherever they want and use it however they want, in a variety of social contexts. A lot of the time people just want to have a copy of all the information they&#8217;ve put in Facebook. This is a core thing for us. People need to be able to put their information into Facebook and then take it out.&#8221;</p>
<p>And so Facebook is addressing that need with Download Your Information, a service that allows Facebook users to, you guessed it, easily download their information and use it to interact in a variety of social situations.</p>
<p>Also announced this morning, a new apps dashboard called &#8220;Applications You Use.&#8221; This offers a higher level of visibility into the apps people are using and how those apps are using their information.</p>
<p>Finally, the company announced a solution to what it described as social networking&#8217;s &#8220;big problem.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We have at Facebook what we like to call &#8216;The Big Problem,&#8217;&#8221; Zuckerberg said. &#8220;You have these different social circles and you want to interact with them in different ways.  The reality is that for a lot of people &#8216;just your friends&#8217; isn&#8217;t really private. And what a lot of people want to do is to be able to share among smaller groups within their friends&#8230;.This isn&#8217;t just a problem with Facebook, but across all the applications in the ecosystem. So how do you solve this problem of subgroups?&#8221;</p>
<p>Evidently, there are a number of approaches. Facebook&#8217;s finally decided on one, and it&#8217;s the best of the bunch&#8211;better than any list or algorithmic solution you might conceive of. &#8220;What we think is the right solution and the one that&#8217;s going to work and be a fundamental building block of Facebook and social applications going forward,&#8221; Zuckerberg said, adding that Facebook&#8217;s solution will &#8220;blow everyone else away.&#8221;</p>
<p>And that solution is? An enhanced version of Facebook Groups, consisting of Shared Space, group chat and email lists.</p>
<p>Shared space&#8211;according to former Hot Potato CEO Justin Shaffer, who&#8217;s been quarterbacking the project since Facebook acquired his company&#8211;works pretty much as you&#8217;d expect. Create a group, add some friends and voil&agrave;: a solution to The Big Problem.</p>
<p>Making these advances possible is something Facebook refers to as &#8220;Social Design.&#8221; This is why Shared Space is called &#8220;space&#8221; and isn&#8217;t just a simple friend filter&#8211;even though that&#8217;s really what it appears to be. This is all, of course, part of Facebook&#8217;s &#8220;share more&#8221; philosophy, and the company clearly thinks that by allowing users to share more privately&#8211;i.e., within smaller groups of friends&#8211;they will share more. That means more user activity and data for Facebook, and the privacy concerns that go along with that.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In yet another major departure from Yahoo in recent days, Yahoo VP for Social Platforms Neal Sample has left the company for eBay (EBAY), where he will be the chief of the e-commerce giant&#8217;s architecture.</p>
<p>After being contacted by me after I&#8217;d heard about his departure from several Yahoo (YHOO) staffers, Sample confirmed the move but did not provide other details. His email to staff is below.</p>
<p>A Yahoo spokesperson also confirmed Sample&#8217;s leaving.</p>
<p>It was less than a week ago that Yahoo Communications Products Head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/exclusive-yahoos-communications-head-jason-titus-departs/">Jason Titus also left the company</a>.</p>
<p>Sample&#8217;s move is another blow to Yahoo&#8217;s management team, led by CEO Carol Bartz, given his job as the leader of the Internet giant&#8217;s open, social and publishing platforms.</p>
<p>That purview stretched from comments to Answers to status updates and, of course, to Yahoo&#8217;s recent move to integrate social networks such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/yahoos-project-rushmore-begins-with-massive-facebook-connect-deployment-across-internet-giant">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100223/yahoo-expands-twitter-relationship-in-next-stage-of-project-rushmore-complete-with-cutesey-bird-puns">Twitter</a> deeply into the service.</p>
<p>Sample and his colleagues were behind the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s late-to-the-social-party strategy of employing an all-inclusive hug of every social networking service globally and providing users with a kind of social dashboard that is understandable amid all the noise.</p>

<p>Team&#8211;</p>
<p>It is with mixed emotions that I tell you that I am moving on to become VP of Architecture at eBay. I&#8217;ll be taking on a larger role and taking on new challenges and opportunities. I&#8217;ll be leaving early next month and am working hard to ensure a smooth transition.  Jay and team are already searching for a new permanent leader.</p>
<p>Needless to say, my time at Yahoo! has been full of adventure, technical achievements and a lot fun with great, smart people. My decision to leave was not an easy one. We&#8217;ve made significant progress over the last six years, particularly related to the advancements of our Social and Open platforms and I know many good things will continue to come out of this team.</p>
<p>As many of you know, I went to college in Wyoming where I learned one thing that&#8217;s been more important than anything else: how to shake hands. There&#8217;s a lot of handshaking that goes on there, so you get good at it! I’ve explained to a few folks that you even wave to other people in cars in Wyoming (perhaps because there&#8217;s a good chance one of you will pull the other out of a snow bank one day!).</p>
<p>In the 90s, I started a PhD at Stanford and experienced an immediate cultural disconnect.  Seemingly no one in California shook hands or even said &#8220;hello&#8221; as they passed on the sidewalk. It was strange.</p>
<p>A little over six years ago, I was looking for a new work home. I knew that I needed a workplace loaded with good people and Yahoo! fit that bill. On my first interview, I was recruited by a friend from elementary school (Mark!), bumped into someone I&#8217;d bought a foosball table from a couple years before (Vikram!), and met a future boss, a long-time Yahoo! with outstanding character and a great handshake (JV!). It was a great fit: good folks, good work, and plenty of new hands to shake.</p>
<p>I leave present and future Yahoos with this: shake more hands! Get out there and press the flesh. Learn the names of your fellow Yahoos, all of them. Invite them to coffee and introduce them to your favorite baristas. It helps to know who is on the other end of that email, who to go to in getting things done, and who&#8217;s available for a session of mid-afternoon stress-relief (aka, foosball).</p>
<p>I’ve got some new hands to shake, but I won&#8217;t ever forget yours.</p>

<p>Well, he kind of has to be that way, given his job as the leader of the Internet giant&#8217;s open, social and publishing platforms.</p>
<p>That purview stretches from comments to Answers to status updates and, of course, Yahoo&#8217;s recent move to integrate social networks such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/yahoos-project-rushmore-begins-with-massive-facebook-connect-deployment-across-internet-giant">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100223/yahoo-expands-twitter-relationship-in-next-stage-of-project-rushmore-complete-with-cutesey-bird-puns">Twitter</a> deeply into the service.</p>
<p>The Facebook integration was the first to be completed last week, allowing users of both sites to link their accounts and view and share updates with friends across both networks, as well as share &#8220;Like&#8221; items across both.</p>
<p>Sample talks about this in the video below and manages to get in a funny dig about <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100416/can-yahoo-nab-foursquare-for-125-million-or-will-vcs-prevail-the-race-for-the-hot-mobile-start-up-nears-its-end">Yahoo&#8217;s recent attempt to buy Foursquare</a>, noting that what the hot social location start-up offers is becoming quickly commoditized.</p>
<p>Sour&#8211;but probably entirely correct&#8211;grapes!</p>
<p>In any case, Yahoo (YHOO) leadership is hoping it will not get shut out too, by employing the strategy of an all-inclusive hug of every social networking service globally and providing users with a kind of social dashboard that is understandable amid all the noise.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not innovative. But it is also not a bad idea, given how late Yahoo has been to the social party, and&#8211;as you will see&#8211;Sample makes a pretty good case as to its prospects for success, even compared with Facebook.</p>

<p>It might also be a business. That&#8217;s the hope of investors who have just plowed $1.6 million into the six-man operation, which launched a few months ago.</p>
<p>First Round Capital and Lower Case Capital are putting new money into the company, along with existing investors Mitch Kapor and Polaris Venture Partners, who previously invested $300,000. Stickybits is also touting the arrival of semi-celebrity angel investor Chris Sacca.</p>
<p>Again, explaining Stickybits takes a bit of work, and it may be easier if you&#8217;re drinking beer instead of coffee. <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1973759_1973760_1973764,00.html">Time.com</a> did a fairly concise job, though: Using an Apple (AAPL) iPhone or Google (GOOG) Android, &#8220;users can scan barcodes, attach a piece of information&#8211;either a video, note or audio recording&#8211;and receive a notification whenever someone else scans the same object. Stickybits also produces unique, one-off  barcodes of its own that, when attached to a postcard, for example, add digital memory to static objects.&#8221;</p>
<p>So that sort of sounds fun, and there might even be some commercial applications: You can see how marketers might want to play around with tagging the bar codes on the stuff they sell, etc.</p>
<p>Founder <a href="http://www.billychasen.com/">Billy Chasen</a>, a graduate of the Betaworks start-up incubator, says the company intends to court those commercial customers, via privileged access to its API, as well as a dashboard they could use to manage their bar codes.</p>
<p>But Chasen says his company won&#8217;t be consumed with consumer marketers. &#8220;It&#8217;s not going to turn into something where it&#8217;s just a tool for brands,&#8221; he says. &#8220;We want it to be fun.&#8221;</p>
<p>Cool! In the meantime, Stickybits is generating a couple dollars by <a href="http://stickybits.com/buystickers/">selling those personalized barcode stickers</a>. I bet someone has already slapped one on a bong.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting interview BoomTown did last week with Seesmic Founder and CEO Loic Le Meur, whose status update client software is one of the more popular ones, at the Facebook f8 developers conference last week.</p>
<p>In it, he talked about the various new features of Facebook that make it &#8220;very, very close to Twitter.&#8221; Such as the new &#8220;Like&#8221; button being like a retweet on Twitter.</p>
<p>(Actually, the French-born Le Meur calls the microblogging service &#8220;<em>Tweeee</em>-ter.&#8221;)</p>
<p>In any case, he made some interesting points, especially since Seesmic&#8211;among others&#8211;was caught up in the controversies around the entry of Twitter into businesses so far pioneered by innovative third-party satellites of Twitter.</p>
<p>Still, Le Meur sought to downplay the conflict&#8211;even after Twitter bought the competing Tweetie desktop client&#8211;with a blogpost titled: <a href="http://www.loiclemeur.com/english/2010/04/fck-you-naysayers-twitter-did-not-fck-us-and-just-rocks.html">&#8220;F*CK you naysayers. Twitter did NOT f*ck us and just rocks.&#8221;</a></p>
<p><em>Alrighty then!</em></p>
<p>And while it is true that Seesmic is more than just a Twitter client&#8211;with Facebook, LinkedIn and more in its dashboard for the desktop and mobile devices&#8211;Le Meur has to hope that competition between the microblogging service and the social networking giant is a good thing for smaller start-ups in their ecosystem, such as Seesmic.</p>

<p>Twitter has quietly been reaching out to marketers about its new ad platform for a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100226/twitters-ad-plan-copy-google/">few months</a>, but now it&#8217;s a full-fledged marketing blitz. The messaging service <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100412/as-promised-here-come-the-twitter-ads/">rolled out its ad strategy to the press</a> last night; today it&#8217;s going directly to the ad industry, via COO <a href="http://twitter.com/dickc">Dick Costolo&#8217;s</a> presentation at <a href="http://adage.com/digital2010/agenda.php">Ad Age&#8217;s Digital Conference</a>.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure how much more Costolo will reveal that Twitter hasn&#8217;t put out already&#8211;or may be waiting to talk about at tomorrow&#8217;s Chirp conference. But since I&#8217;m here I&#8217;ll liveblog it anyway.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p>Costolo says he has been waiting five or six months to give this presentation. It&#8217;s time to walk through the rollout, he adds, making note of his &#8220;fascinating nontraditional&#8221; prediction last fall.</p>
<p>He explains the Twitter ecosystem. The ad platform has to go everywhere, not just to Twitter.com. He refuses to call the ads, &#8220;ads.&#8221; They&#8217;re &#8220;just tweets.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Promoted tweets,&#8221; that is.</p>
<p>He walks through the @hashtagtees example.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a menu from which ad buyers can pick search terms and associate them with specific tweets they&#8217;ve already published.</p>
<p>Promoted tweets look and act like regular tweets except that they&#8217;re labeled as promotions and stay at the top of the Twitterstream.</p>
<p>A promoted tweet &#8220;combines earned media and paid media in one space,&#8221; Costolo says.</p>
<p>&#8220;Earned&#8221; media are free, Costolo reminds the audience. That is, if people retweet your paid tweet, there&#8217;s no charge additional charge.</p>
<p>The pitch continues: Ads are &#8220;real time,&#8221; and so are analytics&#8211;you can see how ads are performing second-by-second.</p>
<p>Twitter will start with Twitter.com search. That&#8217;s phase one. The plan will roll out more broadly, but the company is doing it this way because it wants a &#8220;thoughtful, user-centric approach&#8221; to figuring it out. &#8220;We will quickly expand into syndication&#8230;all of our syndication partners.&#8221; And here, Costolo specifically mentions UberTwitter in the list of partners.</p>
<p><strong>Important</strong>: Twitter will definitely expand into the regular timeline at some point. That is, you will be getting ads in your stream whether you search or not. Ad-free Twitter is over.</p>
<p>Costolo talks about the &#8220;resonance&#8221; metric Twitter will use to figure out which promoted tweets show up and where.</p>
<p>Each ad partner will see a scoreboard with different metrics: Retweets, @replies, #tag click, avatar clicks, link clicks, views after RT.</p>
<p>Advertisers won&#8217;t pay for ads that don&#8217;t resonate with users.</p>
<p>Next, Costolo describes communication on Twitter as both &#8220;one to many&#8221; and as a &#8220;real-time interest graph.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pricing will start as CPM. Twitter is doing this because it doesn&#8217;t know how to correlate &#8220;resonance&#8221; with value yet. As the company figures this out, it will move to a pricing model based on ROI.</p>
<p>Here comes Porter Gale, VP of marketing for Virgin America, a launch partner. She notes that @jack is flying VA right now.</p>

<p>Um, here&#8217;s a free ad for two-for-one tickets on Virgin. Don&#8217;t really follow it but sure you can figure it out if you&#8217;d like.</p>
<p>And here&#8217;s Ellen Stone, SVP of marketing at Bravo.</p>

<p>Stone describes some sort of live, real-time convergence between shows broadcast and users&#8217; tweets. Makes my head hurt. Hope it doesn&#8217;t pop up during &#8220;Top Chef.&#8221;</p>
<p>Back to Costolo: More monetization coming. Commercial accounts coming after promoted tweets will &#8220;feather into this platform very very nicely.&#8221; One dashboard will manage both products.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Q&amp;A</h4>
<p><strong>Will tweets be syndicated to Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO), and other partners that take the stream?</strong><br />
Costolo says yes, without mentioning any specific search engine or media pub.</p>
<p><strong>Will there be revenue-sharing with publishers and bloggers?</strong><br />
Yes, with developers and publishers. Costolo says Twitter will talk about this at its Chirp conference and focus on the syndication piece there. Revenue sharing will be &#8220;very transparent,&#8221; he adds.</p>
<p><strong>Early reaction from consumers?</strong><br />
Yes, Twitter is getting a &#8220;wait and see,&#8221; Costolo notes. [From whom? Who's seen it?] The company will take its &#8220;learnings&#8221; from search and go forward. Twitter ads should be live and running now.</p>
<p><strong>What CPM are you charging?</strong><br />
Twitter is playing around with different numbers, trying to figure it out. When a term is owned or created by a client, like Virgin America, should it have &#8220;rights&#8221; to that hashtag, whereby no one can outbid it? Some hashtags only have value at certain times. Like &#8220;Super Bowl,&#8221; which is only useful for a couple hours in the year. So we have to play around and test different kinds of pricing. &#8220;We don&#8217;t know the answer to that yet.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>What kind of reactions are you looking for from users?</strong><br />
Costolo says Twitter is looking to see whether people click or interact with ads and paying attention to the tenor of reaction: Positive or negative, etc. Think about the iPad launch this month. People were having battery issues. Someone could have jumped in in real time and bought a promoted tweet that dealt with that. Twitter&#8217;s hope is that when people see these, they&#8217;ll get why they work.</p>
<p><strong>Please talk about search volume.</strong><br />
&#8220;Massive. It&#8217;s huge.&#8221; Will talk about hashtags tomorrow. But on Twitter.com, it&#8217;s a small piece of traffic. So we&#8217;re not maximizing revenue now. We&#8217;re figuring it out.</p>
<p><strong>How will location work with ads?</strong><br />
&#8220;We think significantly.&#8221; There are lots of opportunities down the road. As this gets more sophisticated, will see opps for small and big business.</p>
<p><strong>Will marketers be able to get resonance scores for companies that <em>aren&#8217;t</em> using promoted tweets?</strong><br />
Not at first. But possibly.</p>
<p><strong>Will you share revenue with TweetDeck, etc.?</strong><br />
Yes. We&#8217;ll talk about this tomorrow so we can save something for those guys. Revenue-sharing will be very transparent. Costolo name-checks Iain Dodsworth of TweetDeck and Loïc Le Meur at Seesmic.</p>

This morning, Google (GOOG) rolled out <a href="https://www.google.com/dashboard/">Dashboard</a>, a new service that consolidates user account information and settings for its various products onto a single page.</p>
<p>&#8220;In an effort to provide you with greater transparency and control over their own data, we&#8217;ve built the Google Dashboard,&#8221; <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/transparency-choice-and-control-now.html">the company explained in a blog post</a>. &#8220;Designed to be simple and useful, the Dashboard summarizes data for each product that you use (when signed in to your account) and provides you direct links to control your personal settings.&#8221;</p>
<p>And it does do that, offering a nice single view of all of the data associated with our Google accounts. That said, it’s not quite the extraordinary achievement Google would have us believe. </p>
<p>I suppose it is true that &#8220;the scale and level of detail of the Dashboard is unprecedented,&#8221; as Google claims. That said, it doesn’t offer much in the way of new information. Noticeably absent from Dashboard is any view of the cookie data Google uses to target ads. Essentially, all Dashboard does is consolidate the admin pages of the services associated with a user’s account in a single place. Convenient, yes. But does it tell us anything we didn’t already know? Or, more importantly, how Google is using that information? No.</p>

<p>When BoomTown<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080227/kara-visits-seesmic-and-chats-with-loic-le-meur/"> went to visit serial entrepreneur Loïc Le Meur early last year</a> at his San Francisco HQ, he was stoked about the prospects of his &#8220;video conversation&#8221; community start-up called Seesmic.</p>
<p>That was especially due to the influx of $6 million into his bank account by high-profile angel investors like LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, former AOL head Steve Case, SoftTech VC Jeff Clavier, Zynga&#8217;s Mark Pincus, investor Ron Conway, FON founder Martin Varsavsky and others.</p>
<p>Fast-forward to today and the entire business plan of Seesmic has been upended, with the video part pretty much junked.</p>
<p>Now, Le Meur is focused almost entirely on his social media desktop client, as well as Web and mobile versions, which began as a dashboard for Twitter called twhirl.</p>
<p>If at first you don&#8217;t succeed, dump and change again&#8211;the motto of Silicon Valley!</p>
<p>Seesmic has added a lot more Web services to the client to make it stickier, such as announcing yesterday that it would <a href="http://blog.seesmic.com/2009/09/seesmic-desktop-version-06-updates.html">allow users to access and manage Facebook Pages</a>.</p>
<p>The idea behind Seesmic, as well as competitors such as TweetDeck, is to allow users to manage their various social media tools much like their email accounts.</p>
<p>And while the service&#8217;s desktop client software has been a focus, Le Meur is also pushing its Web and mobile versions, all in the hopes that the newest innovation is the right one.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a tour I did of Seesmic&#8217;s new HQ and a video interview I did with Le Meur about all the changes:</p>

<p>Among its many features, Apple&#8217;s iPhone is equipped with GPS and includes manual, written driving directions built into its standard Maps application. But that function doesn&#8217;t automatically bring up each turn sequentially, and it lacks voice prompts.</p>
<p>Now, a number of companies have launched, or will soon launch, iPhone apps that do offer voice-prompted, automated, turn-by-turn navigation. Of course, many other cellphones have long offered such services. But the iPhone&#8217;s large screen, decent mono speaker and large selection of car mounting kits make it a tempting navigation device.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing four such apps: from TomTom, Navigon, AT&#038;T (T) and Fullpower. The last, called MotionX GPS Drive, isn&#8217;t available in Apple&#8217;s app store as I write this. In the case of the Navigon MobileNavigator, which is already available, I tested an updated version expected to hit the store shortly.</p>

TomTom’s iPhone app</div>
<p>One big downside: Because Apple doesn&#8217;t allow third-party iPhone apps to run simultaneously with the device&#8217;s core functions, any incoming or outgoing phone call will interrupt all these apps during routing. When the call is over, the apps will automatically resume and continue your route. And none of these apps work on the original iPhone, only the 3G and 3GS.</p>
<p>Some of the apps take up a large amount of space on your iPhone, because they store all their maps locally. Others are much slimmer, because they download the apps on the fly, but these require you to have good cellular or Wi-Fi coverage at least at the start of a navigation session.</p>
<p>In my tests, on both local streets and highways, all four apps ate up big chunks of the iPhone&#8217;s battery life. So, I recommend that you employ a car charger when running them. Also, they all work much better and more safely if you use a windshield or dashboard mount.</p>
<p>None of the apps stood out as much better than the others at navigation, though they have different styles and features. All include the usual lists of local businesses and other points of interest.</p>
<p><strong>TomTom:</strong> The U.S. and Canada navigation app costs $100 and takes up a whopping 1.2 gigabytes of space on your phone. But there is no subscription fee and the maps are always present. Like a stand-alone navigation device, it uses big icons and lettering in its menus. It worked OK in my tests, except that it took a little longer than the others to acquire a GPS satellite signal to accurately situate itself. TomTom&#8217;s app doesn&#8217;t have live traffic information, doesn&#8217;t provide a text summary of your planned route, doesn&#8217;t announce street names and doesn&#8217;t integrate control of the iPhone&#8217;s music player.</p>
<p>Like all of its rivals, TomTom can fetch destinations from addresses in your iPhone contact list. But it didn&#8217;t understand a typical Washington, D.C., street name, such as &#8220;11th St., NE.&#8221; TomTom plans an extra-cost mounting kit that includes a better speaker, a power plug and a GPS receiver more potent than the iPhone&#8217;s.</p>
<p><strong>Navigon MobileNavigator:</strong> This app costs $90, and it takes up 1.3 GB on the iPhone because it also stores all the maps. There is no recurring fee. I thought Navigon had the cleanest interface and the best 3D map view, including representations of some highway-exit and speed-limit signs. It also barks the word &#8220;caution&#8221; when you are speeding. </p>
<p>But the Navigon voice was the least distinct, and while it generally did OK, it thought my D.C. test address was a bridge. It also lacks a route summary and live-traffic reports, though the update I tested now announces street names and integrates music control.</p>
<p><strong>MotionX-GPS Drive:</strong> Of all the apps, this one looks and works most like a typical iPod app, and least like a navigation program ported from another device. Its main screen has a clever menu arranged in a circle. It&#8217;s also fairly small—just 10 megabytes or so. But it must download maps and other info each time you start a route. This also allows it to update the information on the fly. Drive also is potentially the cheapest of the four apps I tested. It will cost $1.99 and include a 30-day free trial. After that, it&#8217;s $25 a year. </p>
<p>This app worked well in my tests, and is packed with features, including live traffic, a  route summary, and integrated music control. It understood my D.C. test address, but it doesn&#8217;t announce street names, and its function buttons are very small and labeled with tiny type.</p>
<p><strong>AT&#038;T Navigator:</strong> The iPhone version of this existing service, like Drive, downloads maps and info on the fly, but it takes up even less space on the phone—just 2.3 megabytes. That means you need a good connection at the start of a trip. It worked OK for me. Its interface is clean, and it has a route summary, live traffic and announcement of street names. It also understood my D.C. test address. And it synchronizes saved addresses with a Web site. But it is potentially the priciest. The app itself is free but usage costs $10 a month.</p>
<p>None of these apps is perfect, but each adds a new dimension to the iPhone.</p>

<p>It looks like the local market is heating up even more, with MSNBC.com announcing the acquisition of Chicago-based EveryBlock.</p>
<p>MSNBC.com&#8211;a joint venture of Microsoft (MSFT) and GE (GE) unit NBC Universal&#8211;paid several million dollars for the &#8220;hyper-local&#8221; information site, which is up and running in 15 cities, including New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and Boston, sources said.</p>
<p>In June, Time Warner (TWX) online unit <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090611/back-to-the-future-aol-adds-local-with-two-acquisitions-including-ceos-start-up">AOL paid about $10 million to buy Patch Media</a>.</p>
<p>The New York-based start-up is a platform that does deeply localized coverage of communities on a range of topics, from announcements to news to events to obituaries. It is aimed at competing with local newspapers and other media.</p>
<p>EveryBlock takes a slightly different approach, scouring a mass of publicly available data in a variety of U.S. cities from a variety of public records&#8211;such as crime stats, building permits and restaurant inspections&#8211;and reassembling them into more comprehensible and geographically relevant news feeds, depending on what a user asks for.</p>
<p>It also pulls up related Flickr photos and information from Web sites like Yelp and Daily Candy and can get very granular, down to keeping track of what is happening on your block or neighborhood.</p>
<p>Maps are also deeply integrated into EveryBlock, as it was on an earlier effort&#8211;ChicagoCrime.org&#8211;of founder <a href="http://www.holovaty.com/">Adrian Holovaty</a>.</p>
<p>The innovative little start-up has a tiny staff of a half-dozen, still calls itself a &#8220;project&#8221; on its Web site and was started with $1.1 million in grant money won from the Knight News Challenge, an annual contest held by the Knight Foundation.</p>
<p>MSNBC.com is the news channel for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal, whose execs are very interested in weaving more local results into the site, as well as into the software giant&#8217;s new search offering, Bing.</p>
<p>The aim of having EveryBlock data integrated, for example, would be to create a local information dashboard on MSN.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When the cheap laptops known as netbooks first came out over a year ago, computer makers were able to offer them at low prices in part by shipping them with the free Linux open-source operating system, rather than Microsoft&#8217;s Windows. Since then, Windows netbooks have taken over most of the market after Microsoft began pushing Windows XP aggressively to netbook makers and consumers realized Linux netbooks didn&#8217;t work well with some popular applications and devices.</p>
<p>Linux on netbooks isn&#8217;t going away though. In fact, software and hardware companies have been making big investments to improve Linux netbooks. For the past week, I&#8217;ve been using several flavors of Linux running on netbooks &#8212; Ubuntu, Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s Mi (which is based on Ubuntu) and Moblin, created largely by Intel and not yet available commercially. In all cases, the Linux netbooks failed at some basic functions that any laptop, no matter how tiny and inexpensive, should be able to handle, like working with printers. At the same time, Mi and Moblin have impressive graphical user interfaces well-suited to the habits of typical netbook users, like checking email and accessing social-networking sites, as well as the small screens and low horsepower of tiny laptops. In addition to Linux, all of the computers shared the standard features, or lack thereof, common among netbooks, including compact keyboards and no DVD drives.</p>

H-P&#8217;s Mini 110 Mi Edition</div>
<p>The most polished of the products was H-P&#8217;s Mini 110 Mi Edition, a new model with a 10.1-inch screen that H-P will begin selling on its Web site for $279.99 on June 10. That&#8217;s nearly $50 less than what H-P will charge for the Mini 110 running Windows XP, which will come with a 160-gigabyte hard drive instead of the 8-gigabyte solid-state drive that will come with the Mi edition.</p>
<p>The striking thing about this netbook is the slick graphical user interface created by H-P that runs on top of Ubuntu and first began appearing on H-P netbooks early this year. Instead of a traditional desktop like that found in Windows and the Mac, Mi (pronounced &#8220;me&#8221;) arranges commonly used applications and content on a screen called the &#8220;dashboard,&#8221; which looks like a personalized Web page and lists recently received emails, fresh thumbnail images of favorite Web sites, and a Web-search toolbar.</p>
<p>The Mi home screen is a clever way to make the computer seem alive with on- and off-line content, which is fitting since netbooks are designed for on-the-go Internet activities. It&#8217;s also tailor-made for the small screen size of netbooks.</p>
<p>A more eye-catching iteration of Linux is Moblin, which I tried out in test form on an Acer netbook; it is expected to ship on netbooks by the end of the year. Moblin has a menu of icons at the top of the screen, the most interesting of which leads to the M-Zone, a home screen that displays calendar appointments and favorite applications alongside snapshots of recently visited sites and a continuous feed from the user&#8217;s Twitter network.</p>
<p>An icon called &#8220;People&#8221; leads to a list of instant-messaging buddies, while another, called &#8220;Zones,&#8221; let me organize all the applications I had launched into different virtual workspaces, which is useful for hopping between various tasks on a small-screen device like a netbook.</p>
<p>The look and feel of the standard Ubuntu system, without the Mi interface, is more commonplace. I tried out a Dell Mini 10 with a 10.1-inch display and 160-gigabyte hard drive that sells for $349 on Dell&#8217;s Web site. The Mini 10 ships with version 8.04 of Ubuntu, which resembles Windows XP, with its desktop, taskbar and pop-up menu system. Ubuntu, in some cases, seemed to overestimate the size of the Dell Mini&#8217;s display: A window for configuring wireless-networking capabilities was so large it bled off the screen, and I couldn&#8217;t access all the buttons on it. I also installed on the Dell a new version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix, which works better on small screens. Since a Windows XP version of the Dell Mini 10 sells for the same price as the Ubuntu, I can&#8217;t see a compelling reason to choose the Ubuntu option.</p>
<p>All the netbooks I tried had compatibility problems with other external devices. The netbooks couldn&#8217;t load the software drivers to let me print to my Canon and Dell printers. I couldn&#8217;t load pictures over a USB cable from my Canon PowerShot SD750 digital camera. I was able to get my pictures on the machines by plugging a storage card from my camera directly into the netbooks.</p>
<p>Canonical, the London company that oversees development work on Ubuntu, says it is improving the system&#8217;s compatibility with various devices. Intel says it is unfair to judge Moblin until it is commercially available.</p>
<p>Some key applications currently don&#8217;t run on Linux, like Apple&#8217;s iTunes, which makes it difficult to load music files onto iPods from the netbooks. While the Linux laptops didn&#8217;t run Microsoft Office, they came with OpenOffice, a free package of word-processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications that allowed me to open and modify basic Word and Excel files.</p>
<p>The companies behind Linux netbooks have made great strides in improving user interfaces, but until they can achieve similar breakthroughs in how the machines work with other devices, Windows netbooks are still a better deal.</p>

We can make our homepage better reflect this reality and, as many of you know, we’ve been hard at work on improving both our mobile and Web homepages.<br />

What’s new, you ask?<br />
We recently made the new Yahoo! Mobile (http://m.yahoo.com) available on the mobile Web across more than 300 devices and as an Apple iPhone app &#8212; both are available in eight countries, with more launching soon. We’ve moved out of beta and are in the process of rolling it out as our default mobile homepage.<br />

Like the PC homepage we’re testing, Yahoo! Mobile has a more feature-rich design, letting you bring together your favorite content and services from across the Web, making it more personally relevant. For example, my experience is customized with my Yahoo! Mail, Facebook, Twitter and Yahoo! Messenger accounts, as well as my various stocks, favorite blog feeds, and weather from my favorite cities. The beauty of it is that you can customize the experience to exactly what you want and add anything to the page.<br />
 <br />
As for the Web, we recently started testing some new designs based on your feedback. We recognize that many of you like your homepage just the way it is, thank-you-very-much, so the overall look and feel of the page will be familiar. But take a closer look, and you’ll see that we’ve made some fundamental improvements and packed in features that are easy to use and easy to make your own &#8212; things you have told us you want.<br />
 <br />
The “My Favorites” area on the left side of the page includes an applications “dashboard” with the ability to preview, interact with or navigate to your favorite sites &#8212; whether they’re on Yahoo! or elsewhere on the Web. It’s all fully customizable.<br />
 <br />
Here’s some of what’s new and cool:</p>
<ul>
<li>Lots more apps: We’re testing a growing library of apps that let you get more done without leaving the page. Some of these apps include eBay and MySpace, and content sites like USA Today and NPR. We also have newly developed apps for popular Yahoo! services like Messenger, Movies and Flickr.</li>
<li>Social pulse: A new Yahoo! Updates app lets you keep up with your friends’ online activities directly on the homepage &#8212; such as a recently Buzzed article or a video uploaded to YouTube.</li>
<li>Easier email: We’ve separated your individual email accounts as distinct apps, rather than a combined inbox, so that it’s faster and easier to get to the exact mail you want. This was a request we heard repeatedly during testing.</li>

It’s called <a href="http://www.vine.net/default.aspx">Microsoft Vine</a> and it’s not so much a social network as it is a “societal” one&#8211;or at least, <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=2604">Redmond likes to bill it as such</a>.</p>
<p>Announced today and scheduled for beta in May, Vine is a hyperlocal messaging and alert system intended to be used to share information during a crisis. Properly configured, it will gather local news and public safety announcements along with location information, reports and messages from friends&#8211;<a href="http://www.vine.net/static/pdf/vine_factsheet.pdf">eventually even those posted to other services, like Facebook and Twitter</a>&#8211;into a handy little dashboard. This being Microsoft (MSFT), that dashboard will be proprietary and require PCs running XP SP2 or Vista and 600 MB of hard disk space.</p>
<p>So really, Vine is not so much a societal network for people you care about, but for the <em>PC users you care about</em>.  A proprietary disaster messaging system&#8230; sigh, only from Microsoft.</p>
<p>Anyway&#8230;. It’s an interesting idea&#8211;not so much as the “societal network” Microsoft touts it as but as a cunning end run around established services. Twitter and Facebook are fun, recreational, but Vine has gravitas. It’s the network you turn to when things fall apart&#8211;assuming you meet the proper system requirements&#8211;because it consolidates the Tweets and status updates you actually want to read with need-to-know public safety announcements. Of course, Microsoft won’t admit that. &#8220;We intend this to be a service of services&#8211;to not replace social networking tools that exist today, but embrace them,&#8221; <a href="http://www.techflash.com/Microsoft_Vine_to_link_Facebook_other_networks_into_alert_system_43838022.html">Tammy Savage, Microsoft Vine general manager, told TechFlash</a>.</p>
<p>Yeah, embrace <em>and extend</em> and&#8230; well, we all know what comes next.</p>
