MetroPCS Launches LTE Network in Las Vegas

MetroPCS Communications Inc. said it switched on its fourth-generation wireless network in Las Vegas as the prepaid carrier makes a big push into data services. The Dallas company is the first U.S. carrier to offer a 4G network that runs on Long-Term Evolution, or LTE, technology.

Verizon Network Outage Begs Question: Is There Also a Map for That?

AT&T executives were no doubt grinning into their cornflakes this morning over a cock-up at rival Verizon that left many of that company’s customers in the eastern half of the U.S. without access to data services early Wednesday. The network outage was resolved relatively quickly, but not before Verizon got a little taste of some of the grief AT&T has been suffering for the past year.

Starent to Cisco: Hey, Big Spender

Cisco CEO John Chambers wasn’t kidding when he said we’d see the company move into a number of new markets via acquisition over the next year. Earlier this year, Cisco acquired Pure Digital, developer of the Flip video camera, for $590 million. Two weeks ago it spent $3 billion on video-conferencing system maker Tandberg. And now it’s purchasing mobile infrastructure outfit Starent Networks for $2.9 billion, or $35 a share.
