While I was in Denmark at a media conference recently, I shared the stage with Robert Shrimsley, the managing editor of the Financial Times’ Web site, FT.com.

The longtime newsman is one smart dude, as you will see from this video, in which he talks about the U.K.-based site’s experience with paywalls and other challenges for journalism in recent years.

Here’s a video I did with Shrimsley on a train into Copenhagen from the to-be-or-not-to-be town of Helsingør:

Big Blue teams up with the British telecom giant Cable & Wireless to join the race to provide UK homes and businesses with smart electrical meters.

Computing giant IBM and the British telecom concern Cable & Wireless say they’re collaborating to build a cloud computing system that would monitor the power usage of some 50 million smart electrical meters in the UK.

The idea, they say, is to use cloud computing to monitor and analyze power use at British homes and businesses, as part of an overall plan to reduce the country’s energy use and therefore its carbon footprint.

Several existing wireless players have tossed their hats in the ring to build smart meter systems, including BT, Telefonica and Vodafone. They all want a piece of a big UK government contract that could be worth as much as $14 billion to install smart meters in every home by 2020 as part of a wider plan to reduce its carbon emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050.

IBM and C&W say their plan, which they call the UK Smart Energy Cloud, will gather data many times a day from smart meters around the country and store it in a cloud hosted in the UK. The data would then go to power utilities for analysis, to make sure customers are billed according to their usage.

IBM is also involved in a nationwide smart grid project in Malta and has a hand in a pilot project in Denmark. C&W has more than 1,000 network sites, and many, it says, are located at electrical substations. IBM and C&W would essentially become a middle man, saving UK power retailers from having to make huge investments in computing and communications infrastructure.

Nokia is taking the ax to its research and development group. Again. This morning the company said it would cut around 220 R&D jobs in Japan. This, just four days after announcing plans to eliminate 330 jobs in Finland and Denmark.

Nokia is taking the ax to its research and development group. Again. This morning the company said it would cut around 220 R&D jobs in Japan. This, just four days after announcing plans to eliminate 330 jobs in Finland and Denmark.

The stated reason for the reductions: An effort to better align the company’s operations with its focused portfolio of future products. Seems Nokia (NOK), which typically spews out 50 or so new phones a year, many of them unremarkable, plans to concentrate on a smaller number of more “iconic” devices going forward.

In other words, Nokia is going to work a little harder to catch up with Apple (AAPL), which has really shown up the company these past few years. As Bengt Nordstrom, chief executive of telecom consultant Northstream, told Reuters earlier this year: “As much as iPhone and App Store is a success for Apple, it’s a humiliating defeat for the rest of the mobile industry. Twenty years of efforts from operators and vendors to create mobile applications that customers like is overtaken in a heartbeat by someone that never done it before.”

According to the World Economic Forum, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland are the three most networked nations in the world. In its annual Global Information Technology Report, the Forum ranked 127 countries according to network readiness and found that Denmark, followed by Sweden and Switzerland, had not just the highest average broadband-Internet speeds, but the highest broadband penetration rates as well.

The countries also received high marks for their tech-friendly regulatory environments, something the United States apparently lacks. The US ranked fourth in the survey–up three places from last year–because of its (surprise!) poor scores for “Burden of Government Regulation,” “Effectiveness of Law-Making Bodies,” and “Total Tax Rate.”
