The search giant won't be updating us on its streaming media device at this week's I/O developer conference. Perhaps next year?

Nearly one year ago, at its I/O developer conference, Google unveiled its Android-powered Nexus Q media player product to much fanfare. Little more than a month after the big reveal, Google suspended the launch of the Q indefinitely.

So, will Google’s I/O conference — set to kick off this Wednesday — bring news of the Nexus Q’s fate?

No, it won’t. Google won’t have any news on the Nexus Q this week, according to sources familiar with the matter. Google didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The Q’s notable absence over the past year is almost as big a deal as its initial unveiling. For Google, the Nexus Q was less a new product than it was a definitive statement; essentially, the search giant was saying that with the fully in-house-designed Q, Google, too, could create beautiful products, just like its greatest competitor, Apple, whose iPhones, iPads and computing devices are fetishized by technologists and design fanatics the world over.

What’s more, the Q was to be manufactured inside the U.S., a stark departure from so many consumer electronics companies whose devices are put together overseas in places such as South America and Asia. And the timing of the initial announcement couldn’t have been better for Google: As Apple was facing harsh criticism for working conditions and wages in overseas operations with partner manufacturing group Foxconn, Google reaped the public relations benefits of claiming to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. of A.

The Q was indeed attractive and well built, a matte-black sphere slightly smaller than a bowling ball, encircled in a thin strip of LEDs which alternated in color when interacting with other Android devices. It was sleek, stylish, an item that any design devotee would feel comfortable situating in the middle of their living room.

Aside from looking pretty, the Q didn’t do quite enough to warrant the hefty $300 price tag. The Nexus Q was for all intents and purposes a direct gateway to Google Play, the company’s Web-based media store which sells MP3s and videos to consumers. Link the Q up to your Wi-Fi network and it would be able to tap into a user’s online repository of Google-stored content. Users could control the Q with their Android smartphones and tablets and, ideally, hold listening “parties,” swapping songs in and out of the “queue” of tracks to be played.

However novel, the Nexus Q paled in comparison to devices from competitors like Microsoft, whose massively popular Xbox is capable of delivering all sorts of downloadable content like games, video and music. Apple, too, offers the Apple TV at a modestly priced $100, and is capable of delivering video and music from its iTunes online media store, as well.

As a result of a wave of immediate criticism, Google suspended the Q’s fate indefinitely, citing “initial feedback from users that they want Nexus Q to do even more than it does today,” according to the company’s statement last July. Google said at the time that it was “postponing” the consumer launch rather than halting product development completely, in order to “work on making it even better.”

Indeed, Google will have to return with a strong product to compete in the battle for consumers’ living rooms, an assault waged across all fronts from the world’s biggest American technology companies. Two years ago, Google unveiled Android @Home, the company’s plan to extend Android-based devices into products like in-home lighting fixtures, signaling the company’s grand ambitions to bring Android out of its traditional mobile device roots.

While we’ve seen little progress in the way of news from Google’s @Home efforts since, Microsoft and Apple continue to push for greater market share with their device and content offerings. Even Amazon is reported to be working on its own set-top box, in order to stream its content directly into the homes of consumers.

So, at this week’s I/O, at least, we won’t be hearing about Google’s Nexus Q plans. But there’s always next year.

More changes at the top for Twitter's C-Suite.

Twitter has appointed Adam Messinger as the company’s Chief Technical Officer, according to his Twitter profile, in a move that solidifies Twitter’s top C-Suite ranks on the company’s slow, steady trudge to going public.

Messinger joined Twitter in 2011 as vice president of application development in the engineering department, where he has been responsible for making key decisions regarding app design and experience, user growth, and search and relevance issues, among other duties. Previous to this, he spent close to four years at Oracle as vice president of development.

Messinger has been described as a “big picture” guy by some, and will move into working on what future versions of Twitter will look like, but from a very high-level standpoint. That could involve the continued integration of Twitter’s satellite application, Vine, and the soon-to-debut Twitter Music application, which has been in the works for some time.

Twitter CTO Adam Messinger

As engineering was previously split between two heads — Messinger as VP of app development and Chris Fry as VP of infrastructure — Fry will now become senior vice president of overall engineering, as his Twitter profile currently shows. Fry previously worked at Salesforce, where he led all product development and dealt with scaling up infrastructure in periods of hyper-growth — obviously an area where Twitter has vastly improved since its “fail whale” days.

Messinger’s appointment also comes just months after Twitter appointed employees to two other key executive positions, naming long-time Pixar vet Ali Rowghani as company COO, while sliding former Zynga treasurer Mike Gupta into Twitter’s CFO seat. Rowghani used to hold the CFO position, but many have said that he has long been an influential, respected force inside Twitter, and that his move to COO could be seen as a shift in title to reflect the work he has long been doing already.

Twitter’s willingness to solidify its top brass — while charging headlong into the media and advertising world under the direction of global revenue president Adam Bain — looks more and more like a company gearing up for an initial public offering, which many speculate will occur some time in 2014.

VP of Product and Design Michael Sippey

With Messinger’s appointment also comes a set of organizational changes that seem to hint at some past deficiencies. Going forward, VP of Design Mike Davidson will report to Michael Sippey, who has also updated his profile to reflect his new title as vice president of Product and Design. Previously, Sippey was VP of product, while the design department reported directly to Messinger in engineering.

But as I’ve long maintained, that configuration was far from successful. The design department has been a revolving door of exiting employees for the past six-odd months, and a number of the company’s updates to its application in the past have been clunky, counterintuitive or perhaps not as successful as drivers of growth and engagement as Twitter would have liked. It’s a tacit admission that Design just wasn’t meant to report to engineering.

Instead, Design will now report to product, a switch that essentially elevates Sippey to a much loftier position than before. One could see how the Design department would have dictated what product would look like in the future. But instead, Sippey is now charged with the last word in design decisions; essentially, a product guy driving design forward.

That’s even more important considering Twitter co-founder and design visionary Jack Dorsey is far from being involved in the day-to-day stuff of design. Now removed from Twitter and mostly consumed with Square, it’s a large vote of confidence in Sippey’s ability to lead product.

With the series of new appointments, I’d imagine the chatter over Twitter’s IPO and valuation won’t be settling down any time soon.

A few perks for app developers on Facebook's Timeline. But will the users bother to play along?

Like we’ve said before: Facebook really wants developers to build apps into its platform.

The company announced a few design tweaks to its Timeline product on Wednesday, rethinking the presentation of third-party applications that appear on users’ Timeline pages. Users can now manually tweak which apps they want displayed on their pages, while apps get more space on the page in other areas, with some now appearing under a user’s “About” tab.

Not exactly gigantic news, and it’s not surprising, given the rethink of how content will be displayed within the News Feed. App developers want more prominent placement in front of Facebook users, and Facebook needs to show them that it’s worth it to continue building apps for its platform.

Thing is, my guess is that Timeline placement isn’t as huge a way to drive traffic to a developer’s apps as prominent placement in the News Feed is. And much of this Facebook Timeline tweaking requires that users manually manipulate which apps appear in their Timeline. Given that people on the whole are lazy, I’m not sold that most, or even many, users will do this sort of curation.

Anyway, that probably doesn’t matter. It’s a way to convince app developers that, yes!, you will show up for users! And it is worth building into Facebook’s platform!

Let’s see if it works.

Yesterday, I did an interview session at the SXSW interactive festival in Austin with Matt Mullenweg, where we discussed the lofty topic of the future of blogging.

He’d know, as the founder of Automattic, the company behind the giant blog-hosting platform WordPress.com, which powers a lot of websites big and small (like this one, which is both!).

We talked about a lot of topics onstage, including the recent work-from-home debate (he’s for it), new trends in Web design and software, to-sell-or-not-to-sell, and, of course, the importance of mobile to the ecosystem.

Before the session, I did a little pre-interview video with the always affable entrepreneur as we rode through the streets of the Texas capital in a pedicab.

Here you go:

Unique design is a big priority for nearly all smartphone makers these days, but how they approach adding that signature touch varies widely.

The importance of design was a common theme at Mobile World Congress, but smartphone makers are taking some very different approaches.

When you talk to LG’s chief designer, for instance, today’s styling is about the little things. As a giant screen dominates the modern smartphone, companies like his need to find a way to add their own touch at the edges.

Chul Bae Lee

“I am trying to say this is an LG phone, even if it is (with) a small voice,” LG vice president Chul Bae Lee said in an interview in Barcelona last week.

For Lee, that often means things as small as the chrome around a speaker, or the LED light that glows in different colors to indicate an incoming message.

At Nokia, by contrast, it is about being bold — separating itself from the Android pack. The company’s product line — from feature phones to the high-end Lumia 920 — center around bright colors and bold curves.

“It’s a point of view,” Nokia design head Marko Ahtisaari said in an interview. “These are very expressive objects.”

Beyond making a statement, Ahtisaari said, color helps create an emotional connection between Nokia’s devices and its customers. Plus, he said, its research shows that people with the brightly colored phones are more likely to recommend their device.

As a testament to just how big a role design is playing at the new Nokia, it was Ahtisaari, rather than CEO Stephen Elop, who presided over the bulk of the company’s Mobile World Congress press conference.

But while Nokia goes for yellow and cyan, LG and others are experimenting with more subtle shades of black and white. Lee points to the speckled backs on several recent models, such as the Optimus G, which looks black indoors, but has an indigo cast to it when viewed in the sunlight.

Marko Ahtisaari

While clearly more subtle, Lee says, LG’s recent phones are designed to help LG do something it has had a tough time doing of late — standing out from the pack.

“LG has had somewhat of a hard time in the smartphone business, but as a designer I have always been proud of our design heritage,” he said.

Lee added that he wants to bring more of that original design heritage back to LG’s devices. But the problem facing Lee and others is that the screen takes up more and more of a phone’s area, leaving less room for designs of any kind. One of the primary goals these days is reducing the borders — or bezels — on the phone to as close to zero as possible.

“When we came out with the LG Chocolate, we did something big and different,” Lee said. “Now it’s a matter of the smaller details. I wouldn’t say [designing phones] is less exciting than before, but it’s more difficult, for sure.”

Another issue confronting device makers is whether to go with a global design, as Nokia and Samsung have, or to customize devices for specific regions or operators.

LG, for example, plans different versions of its Optimus G for different carriers even within the U.S. market. The Sprint model features a higher-end camera that protrudes slightly in the back, while AT&T’s has what Lee described as a more pragmatic design, with a flat back.

Again, Nokia’s take varies from LG’s. Ahtisaari said that Nokia likes to take one design and use it across the whole portfolio.

“When you look at all our devices together, it looks like a family portrait,” he said. “They should look like they come from the same place.”

Beyond physical looks, both companies are looking at other ways to differentiate their design, either through customizing the user interface or providing experiences outside of the screen, such as wireless charging.

In its seven-year existence, Zillow has expanded into home financing and rental properties. And now it is dipping a toe into home decorating and design, forcing itself to swim in waters it doesn’t know well. Meet Zillow Digs.

For the past week, I tested Digs, the company’s free iPad app and website (Zillow.com/Digs) which is available starting Tuesday.

Digs continues Zillow’s exposé philosophy. Just as Zillow originally revealed home prices and other real-estate information, Digs is showing photos of beautiful rooms and providing Digs Estimates of kitchens and bathrooms that tell people how much it might cost them to do the same remodel in their homes.

Digs Estimates give the cost of a remodeled kitchen or bath.

The idea is a good one, as most people are curious about the cost of renovations. Each Digs Estimate includes specific breakdowns of labor costs (such as demolition, backsplash and cabinet installation) and materials (such as countertops and appliances). These estimates are made by economists and data analysts at Zillow using an algorithm with real-world data from contractors, such as finish levels and material rates. They don’t include structural or utility work, permits or taxes, but they do factor in a regional adjustment according to where you live and how much that might add to the overall price.

Zillow Digs will improve as it goes, but this first version pales in comparison with Houzz, the website and app leader in this space.

Houzz has well over a million images of rooms and spaces compared with the 20,000 images on Digs. Certain items in Houzz images are labeled with tags that show how much an item costs, though Houzz doesn’t offer a feature like Digs Estimates. Along with its images, Houzz offers design and redecorating advice from nearly 170,000 professionals, including architects, interior designers, landscape architects, general contractors and home stagers.

People can also browse Houzz’s Professionals section to see sample work and sort these pros by location and service to find someone they may want to hire. Digs seems to be adding professionals as an afterthought on its app, tagging some (but not all) photos with names of pros. The Digs website does better with a Find a Pro tab at the top of its website, but Digs currently has fewer than 19,000 professionals associated with it.

Not surprisingly, Zillow tries to lure users back to its real bread and butter: Selling homes. Many of the images that didn’t include Digs Estimates did offer Home Info, a tab that displayed the house’s address, estimated valuation, number of beds and baths and additional images. If the house was for sale, I clicked on an “Open in Zillow” link to see the listing page for the home, which included the usual Zillow details such as a map of the house’s location, estimated mortgage and square footage.

Zillow Digs allows users to sort images by space, style and cost.

The thing is, I don’t search for homes by starting with room designs. Like most people, I search for houses that have the right number of beds and baths and fall within my ideal location and budget.

I saved favorite Digs images to virtual Boards by tapping a heart on each photo, adding comments to some. Boards can be named, edited and shared with friends via email, Facebook or Twitter.

But the boards and the comments you make on any image can’t be made private, which is frustrating. Houzz enables privacy for both comments and its version of Boards, called Ideabooks. A spokeswoman for Zillow said private Boards will be available in spring or summer.

Since I tested Zillow Digs in its pre-release edition, it was hard to gauge community involvement. When I saw a design I liked and found a person’s name associated with that photo, I could tap the name to find out more about the person — in some cases it was a design professional — and “follow” him or her on Zillow Digs. Digs can also be linked to your Facebook account, to find friends who use it, though I couldn’t test this aspect because Digs wasn’t yet released.

The Houzz community is involved, vocal and smart about design. A popular Discussions section lets people add polls or ask questions, and in most cases, the community helps out with these inquiries.

Zillow Digs has a helpful feature called Similar Images, which saved me from scouring the app or website for rooms in similar styles. (Houzz has a similar offering.) Another useful feature was a filter that narrows photos by space, style and cost. You can also search specific terms, such as “marble.”

If you’re used to Houzz, you’ll know that Zillow Digs doesn’t come close to its quality and detail. But for people who are curious about the costs associated with remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, Zillow Digs can be eye-opening. If the community embraces it like it has Houzz, the experience will only improve.

Zurb, the Campbell, Calif.-based interaction design company, announced it had acquired Forrst on Thursday, a community-oriented site where designers can share work and suggest improvements to one another.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because this is not Forrst’s first time up on the block. ColorLovers, another design community, acquired Forrst just nine months ago, but decided to sell off the company again as it wasn’t a particularly good fit between the two.

Zurb, then, aims to do with Forrst what ColorLovers apparently couldn’t — improving the site’s design, growing the community of designers and making collaboration between members easier, thereby stimulating overall growth. An ambitious task, and not as easy as it sounds.

There’s also existing competition in the space that Zurb will have to deal with; namely <del datetime="2013-01-11T20:01:07+00:00">Dribble</del> Dribbble and Behance, two established design community sites focused on creative collaboration.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Forrst had previously raised $205,000 in seed funding back in 2010, taking cash from angels like Dave McClure’s 500 Startups, Gary & AJ Vaynerchuk, Adam Schwartz and Jim Sokoloff.

Yahoo appears to be rolling out the newest version of the redesign of its homepage even more extensively across several major browsers, including Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox.

As AllThingsD has previously reported several times, the Silicon Valley Internet giant has been working on a new homepage look, designed to improve its declining consumer usage.

The latest look has been present on all my browsers all day, rather than cycling off to the old version as before. The design is cleaner, with a more touchscreen tablet approach, new icons, and a scrolling news feature. With a more mobile feel, it’s slightly different than previous new versions that Yahoo has been testing over the last few months.

After redoing its Yahoo Mail and Flickr photo-sharing service, sources inside the company said that Yahoo is now close to launching the new homepage. It’s part of an effort called Project Homerun and also a larger effort called Project Zed, which will also include more personalization and a focus on bringing in a range of third-party content.

More on what that means soon …

Until then, here are three different screenshots from tonight from Chrome, Safari and Firefox:

Looks like the Milk kids are getting restless.

Daniel Burka, one of the founding members of mobile development lab Milk, announced Monday that he is leaving his current position inside Google+ to join Google Ventures.

Burka occupied the mobile user experience position at Google+. At Google’s venture arm, he’ll join as a design partner.

Sound familiar? That’s because it is. Milk co-founder and longtime Burka collaborator Kevin Rose did the exact same jump from Google+ to Google Ventures in the spring.

It’s something of a happy reunion, as Rose and Burka have worked together on multiple projects over the years. Burka spent five years as Digg’s creative director under Rose (who was the site’s CEO for a time), before both left the company to found Milk. Burka joins Google Ventures’ in-house design studio, which consists of five partners and two designers-in-residence. They’ll help coach GV’s 150+ portfolio companies in design and product efforts.

So, what’s the deal? Did Rose and Burka get bored inside of Google’s social wing, or did they just want to scoot around the Valley checking out new investments?

I’ve pinged Google+ to ask what’s up. No response yet.

It’s part of a series of changes made since new CEO Marissa Mayer arrived this summer from Google, including detailed employee performance reviews, free food, new smartphones and a hunt for innovative mobile properties to scoop up to improve Yahoo’s creaky Silicon Valley reputation.

Now, according to sources close to the situation, that rejiggering will extend to Yahoo’s board too, with an effort to add more Internet savvy members as directors.

That’s actually be an aim for a while, including a board appointment for longtime entrepreneur Max Levchin, which sources said will occur soon.

In fact, Levchin has been mulling the Yahoo board job for a while, having long been intrigued by the company’s troubles and seeing it as an opportunity rather than a liability.

The wooing of Levchin is also not new. As I wrote in February, he had been pegged for a board seat by then-activist shareholder Dan Loeb of Third Point — who is now on the board after winning his fight with Yahoo and ousted former CEO Scott Thompson. But Levchin, as well as SurveyMonkey CEO David Goldberg, did not want to be part of a dissident slate against Yahoo co-founder and then-board member Jerry Yang.

I had written in September that the board was again looking at Levchin, for a seat designated under an agreement Yahoo had made with Loeb.

The hedge fund investor, who owns a large chunk of Yahoo, had the right to nominate a mutually agreed-upon fourth director after the company settled the proxy fight with him earlier this year. The other directors he nominated previously were Michael Wolf and Harry Wilson.

The thoughtful and cerebral Levchin (pictured here) is best known as a top exec at PayPal. He then founded Slide, a then-hot start-up that made apps — then called “widgets” — for Facebook, including some that let you toss sheep (remember SuperPoke!?!).

(I had been hard on Slide back then, noting that the idea of a “Widget IPO” was ludicrous: “It’s a sign to me that suddenly makes the scene feel very bubbly, given that Slide certainly has traffic, but no proven track record to continually make money.”)

But Slide, which Levchin considered a disappointment despite a huge funding valuing the company at $550 million, was sold to Google for $180 million in mid-2010.

Levchin quickly chafed at the search giant, after working on a variety of social efforts there, including clashing with Google+ leader Vic Gundotra. Levchin did not work that closely with Mayer while at Google, although they are friendly.

He eventually left the company in mid-2011, with Google shuttering Slide, and has since been working on a new start-up in San Francisco.

An active angel investor, he’s one of many entrepreneurs in the Web arena that young start-ups look up to, which is the presumable reason for bringing him onto the Yahoo board. Once added, he’d easily be the hippest director in the group.

The Yahoo board changes will also include the departure of some board members, including Weather Channel CEO David Kenny, who had once been considered as a possible CEO of Yahoo. Other rumors that had been raised included a change in chairman, but sources said that this is not the case for now.

When I emailed and texted him yesterday afternoon about the board changes I had heard were coming, Yahoo Chairman Fred Amoroso wrote me: “As a matter of policy, I don’t comment on rumors.”

Kenny also declined to comment yesterday, noting he was on a plane and was not reachable.

Presumbly, he was returning east from the Yahoo board meeting that was held earlier this week in Silicon Valley.

The Yahoo board moves echo similar changes that were made when former CEO Carol Bartz came into office.

The New York Times also posted on the changes, noting Intuit CEO Brad Smith was also leaving the board. Last year, Smith had become a very active board member, especially after Bartz and then Thompson were ousted, but his own board at the financial software company had been asking him to cut back.

Sources said other new directors might also be named to replace him, but that this was not going to be announced by Yahoo at this time.

Until the inevitable board news, here’s a video of one of many interviews I did with Levchin — this back in 2009 — to give you an idea of his stylings:

A new look for a flagship property.

As AllThingsD previously reported it would, Yahoo has released a new version of its Yahoo Mail offering, updating its Web offering and also adding native mobile apps for Apple iPhone and Microsoft’s Windows 8. It also updated its Google Android app.

The new Web mail has a decidedly cleaner design and improved search, part of an effort to better compete with Google’s Gmail, which has taken major share from Yahoo in the arena in recent years.

In fact, one source told me that the aim was to be “more Gmail-like.” And, indeed, it looks like it is. Yahoo is also working on a radical rehaul of its homepage, which is set to debut in the coming weeks, although the Silicon Valley Internet giant has been rolling it out in testing for months now.

Redoing Yahoo’s flagship properties — especially to focus on mobile — is a key priority at the company under new CEO Marissa Mayer. She said in a blog post that the new Yahoo Mail will be rolled out to most users soon.

It’s an important step, as I noted in my post about the impending changes to Yahoo Mail, which got its last refresh a year ago:

At the time, the first change in five years got good reviews, with a cleaner design, Twitter and Facebook integration, improved spam filters and speedier delivery.

Unfortunately, since then, Google’s Gmail has become the most popular email service in the world, passing Microsoft’s Hotmail (which is now called Outlook.com after a recent rejiggering), according to recent stats from comScore. That has added up to Gmail’s 287.9 million monthly unique visitors worldwide, 286.2 million for Microsoft’s email product and 281.7 million for Yahoo Mail.

Still, in the U.S. at least, Yahoo is holding onto its longtime — though dwindling — lead, with 76.7 million using Google’s email product and 35.5 million using Microsoft’s.

It’s an important spot to maintain for Yahoo, since many of the users of its products now come to the site to access email and it has been a key driver to its content properties.

But to keep mindshare, Yahoo faces increasingly strong competition. Google’s Gmail released a series of solid improvements last fall. In addition, along with the positively reviewed Microsoft Outlook.com redo, AOL has just announced a new email product called Alto. While it is in beta to a small audience, it is aiming to help users with multiple email accounts organize them better.

In others words, the mail business — especially using it via smartphones and tablets — is another place Yahoo has to make sure it remains innovative.

Jack Dorsey/Twitter

Forget Lo-Fi and Toaster. There may be a sepia-toned little bird under the tree this Christmas.

Twitter is making a big push to release a series of photo filters to be used inside the official Twitter app before the end of the year, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The goal is to release the camera filters in an application update in time for the holiday season, these sources say. The new version of the app is currently in testing, which may be why we’re seeing Twitter chairman Jack Dorsey post so many black-and-white filtered photos of his Square employees (not to mention the wing of his plane at takeoff, posted just this Saturday morning).

Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.

Why push it out before the new year? Perhaps Twitter wants a cut of the inevitable jump in photos we’ll see as everyone goes home for the holidays. Instagram, for instance, saw more than 200 Thanksgiving-related photos posted to its service every second on Thanksgiving Day alone, and ten million Thanksgiving photos posted overall that day. I’d imagine that number will only leap come Christmas and New Year’s.

Keep in mind, this all falls against the backdrop of Instagram, the massively popular Facebook-owned photo app, giving Twitter the ultimate snub on Wednesday, turning off “Cards” functionality and no longer showing Instagram photos properly inside the Twitter stream.

That was the most recent shot in what some have called “the photo wars,” as Instagram and Twitter face off to keep users inside their respective platforms. Facebook’s News Feed has seen a boost in engagement thanks to Instagram photos, as has Twitter’s stream.

But as the mobile-centric Instagram has beefed up its Web presence over the past month, the company is aiming to wean its fan base off of viewing its photos inside of Twitter, instead directing users over to the Instagram Web site.

It’s also worth noting that Google+ recently pushed out its own photo-editing app, Snapseed, just this week.

Twitter’s photo filter initiative — which was first reported by the New York Times and since confirmed by yours truly — is important. The Valley knows that the visual experience is where the consumer Web is headed. It’s why Mark Zuckerberg paid $715 million for Instagram. It’s why Twitter revamped its “Discover” tab, focusing on a more photo-centric experience. It’s the impetus behind the Twitter Cards project.

So with only a few weeks before the holidays, the clock is ticking. And Instagram, with its 100-million-plus users, shows no signs of stopping. Time to buckle down, team Twitter.

The venture-capital firm is announcing two new initiatives around design.

One the biggest trends sweeping Silicon Valley is the glorification of design. Entrepreneurs used to sweat over the back-end technology that kept their sites running. Now following the example of design-obsessed Steve Jobs and others, they are equally anxious about the color and placement of each pixel on the screen or the slope of a bezel.

The latest sign of the trend comes from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. The venture-capital firm will Tuesday announce two new initiatives around design. The first is a “Design Fellows” program that will recruit and place 35 to 40 interns at start-ups backed by the firm. The include One Kings Lane, Path and Zaarly. There is no age requirement, but Kleiner will focus its recruiting at universities.

According to sources close to the company, Yahoo is prepping to launch a major overhaul of Yahoo Mail — which sources said has a cleaner, “more Gmail-like” look.

I am not clear exactly what that means in terms of features and design. But sources said the goal of the redo — which has been initiated by new CEO Marissa Mayer, who is also pushing ahead with a new homepage design — is to better compete with the fast-growing mail offering from Google.

“Marissa thinks Yahoo Mail has been a big missed opportunity for the company and she wants to fix that,” said one person with knowledge of the effort, which had also been mulled by previous CEO Scott Thompson.

Sources said the latest iteration of Yahoo Mail will be released in early December, just after the new homepage is rolled out widely.

That’s a lot of change at a critical money-making time for Yahoo, but Mayer — a former top Google product exec — has publicly committed the company to releasing innovative and mobile-focused products as a key differentiator.

It’s a good idea when it comes to Yahoo Mail, even though it got a major refresh just about a year ago.

Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer is continuing her tweaking of the critical homepage of the Silicon Valley Internet giant. “Bucket tests” of new iterations are rolling out today to small sets of users across the service, as the company zeros in on launching it widely in the first week of December.

This is a massive move and also a risky one. Yahoo’s homepage sees about 170 million daily users who click in to do a variety of things. That huge traffic means that advertising placements earn big bucks from marketers — which inside sources said is typically upwards of $350,000 for a prime placement for a day, rising in price depending on complexity.

Thus, making any dramatic change to the powerful homepage is a big deal for Yahoo’s bottom line, especially in the important fourth quarter, when big advertisers spend a lot of money online and expect big results.

And the latest versions are certainly a major shift from Yahoo’s older look, with the latest using an interactive tiled approach at the very top that suggests the design spawn of Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Flipboard’s elegant social reading app.

As I noted last week, along with experiments in infinite scrolling, a simplified logo and giving search more prominence, Yahoo’s homepage change seems to be aimed at being consumed on touch-responsive, non-PC devices.

That’s no surprise, since Mayer declared in a recent earnings call that Yahoo was going to veer toward a “mobile first” sensibility. “Yahoo will have to be a predominantly mobile company,” she said.

She also has to aim at being a reliable digital company, it seems. In a bit of unlucky timing — even as Yahoo prepped the home page redo, as well as major overhauls of other products — its hugely popular Fantasy Football offering went down right as eight games were about to start at 10 am PT.

Yahoo acknowledged the slowness in its servers on Twitter, noting: “We’re still working to fix fantasy server issue & will update ASAP. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience & appreciate your patience.”

Fantasy Football fans were livid, although this has happened before, especially to those who waited to do their lineup. But some were also funny about the screw-up, as you can see below:

Yahoo Fantasy Football site is down. The Republicans were right; America has officially collapsed. The apocalypse is upon us.

— Steve Fuller (@fullsteve) November 11, 2012

Dear Google, please develop a fantasy football platform. That will end Yahoo! as we know it. Love, Long Suffering Yahoo! Fantasy users.

— WFAN Audio Clips (@WFANAudio) November 11, 2012

As of two hours ago, Yahoo said it was still working on the problem. Presumably, it will be the first fix-it challenge for new COO Henrique De Castro, who starts this week.

Hopefully, Yahoo will not have such problems with the homepage rollout, once the final version is selected.

Until then, please check out two images of yet another version, which is similar — although not the same — as the one I posted last week. In the latest design, for example, the swooshy scroll at the top is smaller and a 300 by 250-sized ad unit is back in place at the top. Overall, it is a little bit more conservative, although still streamlined.

Here they are, along with a more dramatic one from last week and also a recent Yahoo homepage:

The newest iPad software gives users a free clock app. But it may have cost Apple millions.

According to a Swiss news report, Apple is paying out $21 million to settle a copyright dispute with SBB, the Swiss railway operator that owns the design for this iconic station clock.

That same design appeared to show up, uncredited, in the new iPad app that Apple rolled out in its iOS 6 software in September.

Last month SBB announced it had reached a licensing deal that would allow Apple to use the design in iPads and iPhones, but didn’t disclose any details.

We’ve asked Apple for comment.

Apparently, imitation of Flipboard, Window 8, Pinterest, Wonderwall and more is the sincerest form of flattery.

Another week and yet another new design for the Yahoo homepage is being tested out on users — this time, it appears to be one (which you can see below) that looks a lot like Microsoft Windows 8’s touchscreen tiled approach (which is here).

After already putting out tests in the field with infinite scrolling, a simplified logo and giving search more prominence, the Silicon Valley Internet giant is apparently testing an even more drastically different redesign of its key landing page — one that seems to be aimed at being consumed on touch-responsive, non-PC devices.

As you can see from the screenshots below — which a user sent me, and which look exactly like what many Yahoo sources have described to me recently — the design uses big photos tiled across the top of the page. It suggests an ethos that is reminiscent of the new approach by Microsoft, as well as many others, such as Flipboard and Pinterest.

All of these encourage users to reach out and touch, scroll and swoosh. In fact, there are side-swiping arrows on the new Yahoo design.

Also part of the look, which is still being tweaked: More simplified icons for various Yahoo properties, fewer text links, additional social and personalization aspects and — perhaps most importantly — no advertising module at the very top.

That’s interesting, since Yahoo’s homepage is a big moneymaker for the company, because of its huge daily traffic. Thus, any new homepage design will have both massive consumer and financial impact on the company.

Sources said that one possible plan is to move from several 300 by 250-sized ad units to a single 300 by 600, which other sites like AOL have shifted toward. Such a change will not be without controversy for marketers.

It will also present a fresh selling challenge for new COO Henrique De Castro, who arrives at Yahoo from Google next week, and who will be helming sales efforts. (Hey, Henrique — get ready for my upcoming 360-degree profile of you!)

The latest redo is now being iterated under the regime of new CEO Marissa Mayer, under an awfully confident codename, Project Homerun. We’ll see if it is San Francisco Giant’s Panda-worthy, but sources said it is set to be released widely within the next two months.

But, while some new designs that have surfaced have been closer to the current version of Yahoo, the latest design is a more significant shift that would clearly lend itself well to mobile touchscreens, especially on increasingly popular tablets.

Along with Pinterest, Flipboard and Windows 8, other sites have done this, of course, most particularly pioneering content design done several years ago by BermanBraun’s Wonderwall for Microsoft’s MSN portal.

That’s no surprise, since Mayer declared in a recent earnings call — articulating what many desktop-trapped Silicon Valley Internet giants have also done recently — that Yahoo was going to also veer toward a “mobile first” sensibility.

“Yahoo will have to be a predominantly mobile company,” she said in the third-quarter earnings call.

Here’s what that seems to mean for Yahoo, with the new homepage images, as well as one of the current one to compare:
