<p>After playing coy for several months, Microsoft is finally letting developers get their hot little hands on a test version of Windows 8.</p>
<p>At its developer conference in Anaheim, Calif., Microsoft is detailing the new software and offering a preview version of the forthcoming operating system. Although the company is giving the early code to developers, Microsoft isn&#8217;t saying when the operating system will ship.</p>

<p>What is clear is that Steve Ballmer wasn&#8217;t kidding when he called Windows 8 one of the company&#8217;s <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/ballmer-riskiest-product-bet-by-microsoft-is-the-next-release-of-windows/7786">riskiest bets in some time</a>. Microsoft has laid out an ambitious goal for Windows 8, stating that it wants the operating system to be as at home on a tiny touch-only tablet as it is on a large, powerful desktop hooked up to several large displays.</p>
<p>To reach this goal, Microsoft is pushing developers to write a whole new type of application, designed to occupy the full screen and be extremely touch-friendly.</p>
<p>&#8220;Windows 8 is a bold reimagination of what Windows can be,” Windows unit president Steven Sinofsky said in a briefing with journalists on Monday. Sinofsky showed a peek at Windows 8&rsquo;s new interface at <strong>D9</strong> in June, but the company has released few technical details until this week.</p>
<p>The changes to Windows are immediately obvious from the moment it boots up. In addition to hopefully starting up more quickly, the operating system launches to a lock screen that displays a photo and login information, as well as a glance at status information such as calendar appointments, incoming mail and other messages.</p>
<p>Once users log on &#8212; either through a password, PIN or by making certain gestures on a photograph &#8212; they are taken to a start screen that bears more resemblance to Windows Phone 7 than to the traditional Windows desktop. From there, users can run various programs, including many new-style Windows apps that are designed just for Windows 8.</p>
<p>The familiar Windows desktop is there to run traditional programs, such as Office and Photoshop, but what was the entire Windows experience is now just an app that runs alongside new-style Windows apps, which run full screen and have none of the familiar menus such as &#8220;file&#8221; and &#8220;edit.&#8221; Instead, controls for the new apps are hidden until a user swipes the top or bottom of a screen. Swiping the right side brings up a series of universal &#8220;charms&#8221; designed to allow common actions such as searching and sharing, which can work across applications. Swiping in from the left side allows users to flip between open applications.</p>
<p>The other big change coming to Windows 8 is on the chip side. Microsoft has already said that Windows 8 will run on the same kind of ARM-based chips that power smartphones and tablets. However, the key question here is how far Microsoft has gotten.</p>
<p>“The progress is phenomenal,&#8221; Sinofsky said on Monday. &#8220;Everything you are seeing works equally well on ARM today.”</p>
<p>That said, Microsoft is showing mainly new stuff, as opposed to the kinds of older applications that will need to be tweaked or rewritten entirely to run on ARM-based chips. Sinofsky said that, in general, Windows on ARM is designed to run the new-style applications, rather than classic Windows applications. Back in January, Microsoft did show a technology demonstration of Office running on an ARM-based machine, although Sinofsky declined to elaborate on whether an ARM version of Office will be released.</p>
<p>It is unclear when developers will be able to get their hands on an ARM-based version of Windows 8. As for the version that runs on Intel and AMD chips, Microsoft didn&#8217;t give dates, but Sinofsky said to expect this developer preview to be updated periodically and then followed by a single beta version, followed by a near-final release candidate and then the final release. </p>
<p>With Windows 7, a similar process took about a year to go from developer preview to final release.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110720/amid-slower-pc-sales-chipmakers-intel-and-amd-report-earnings/intel-logo/" rel="attachment wp-att-100483"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/07/Intel-logo-323x285.png" alt="" title="Intel-logo" width="323" height="285" class="alignright size-Featured wp-image-100483" /></a>Chip maker Intel will today report results of its second fiscal quarter after the close of markets today, and the expectations aren&#8217;t exactly great.</p>
<p>Doug Freedman, an analyst who covers the chip sector for Gleacher &#038; Co. in San Francisco, trimmed his estimates on both Intel and on its smaller rival Advanced Micro Devices amid a weakened PC market that is running well behind the typical seasonal patterns. Last week, market researcher Gartner reported that worldwide PC shipments <a href="http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1744216">grew less than three percent</a> over the year-ago period, as consumers remain focused on tablets and smartphones and hold off on upgrading their desktops and notebooks.</p>
<p>At a high level, that&#8217;s not good news for Intel and AMD, both of which have yet to penetrate the tablet market in any meaningful way. And both are grappling with the impending entrance of competing chips &#8212; based on <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110701/look-whos-got-the-beefy-arms-now-a-chip-designers-shares-are-pumped/">designs from ARM</a>, from vendors like Nvidia and Qualcomm &#8212; burrowing their way into new consumer notebooks.</p>
<p>In a July 15 note to clients, Freedman cut his estimates on both Intel and AMD for the quarter ending in June and the quarter ending in September. He expects Intel to report sales of $12.7 billion, which is about $100 million below the street consensus of $12.8 billion. He also expects Intel to report per-share earnings of 53 cents, which would amount to a two-cent improvement over the year-ago quarter. </p>
<p>The quarter being reported today isn&#8217;t the story, however: It&#8217;s September. Typically it&#8217;s a seasonally strong quarter, as college students head back to school with new notebooks under their arms. This year Freedman thinks PC sales will lag behind historical patterns. He trimmed his September quarter revenue forecast to $13.16 billion, down from $13.43 billion &#8212; or $300 million below the street view &#8212; and knocked it down by two cents to 59 cents, a penny above the street.</p>
<p>Intel has, in recent quarters, taken a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110419/liveblogging-intels-earnings-conference-call/">fairly aggressive stance</a> on the state of the PC market, and has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110606/idc-says-pc-shipments-are-slowing-down-again/">criticized analysts</a> for fanning investor fears. &#8220;Management should offer more subdued PC unit growth expectations thereby alleviating investor fear that Intel is setting its bar too high,&#8221; Freedman wrote. One other thing Intel has in its favor is that the average selling price of chips is edging upward, which should give it a slight hedge against the weaker market. This should help keep gross margins &#8212; a key metric for Intel &#8212; in the higher end of the 59 to 63 percent range the company said to expect. He also says that Intel could deliver a surprise with better-than-expected results from other parts of its operations, namely its flash memory unit, which makes solid-state hard drives.</p>
<p>For AMD, which reports its results tomorrow, the picture is a mixed bag. The search for a new CEO is now in its sixth month, with no sign of being resolved anytime soon. Freedman doesn&#8217;t expect a CEO to be named today nor in the near term. Finding an external candidate is proving harder than expected. (Note to Freedman: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110615/big-surprise-not-amd-is-having-a-hard-time-hiring-a-new-ceo/">You don&#8217;t say</a>.) Pressure on its share price, thanks to short-sellers, has created a buying opportunity in the near term. </p>
<p>Even so, Freedman trimmed his estimates for AMD&#8217;s June and September quarters. He expects AMD to report sales of $1.55 billion, down from $1.6 billion previously, which would amount to a four percent decline in year-on-year sales. He also shaved a penny off his EPS estimate to nine cents from 10. For September, he expects AMD to report sales of $1.63 billion, down from $1.7 billion before, and cut his EPS estimate to 16 cents from 20.</p>

What&#8217;s strange is the unusual quarter from which Dell got some help: Apple&#8217;s iPad.</p>
<p>Acer had a tough time in the consumer market as the iPad cut into its consumer netbook sales, giving Dell, still strong in the healthy market for corporate PCs, the opportunity it needed to edge ahead of Acer by nearly two percentage points. ISuppli analyst Matthew Wilkins says it looks like a &#8220;firm lead.&#8221; Dell also edged out Acer for the number two spot for the entire year, iSuppli says. (Table courtesy iSuppli.)</p>
<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/2010pcshipsisuppli-275x132.png" alt="" title="2010pcshipsisuppli" width="275" height="132" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3882" />Overall, iSuppli says the fourth quarter set a record for overall PC shipments with more than 93 million units, up nearly 5 percent from the same period in 2009. For the year, global PC shipments amounted to 345.4 million units, up 14.2 percent from 302.4 million in 2009.</p>
<p>Lately PC market analysts have been <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110303/the-ipad-strikes-again-gartner-cuts-its-pc-market-forecast/">blaming Apple</a> and its industry-changing iPad &#8212; the second iteration of which <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20110309/ipad-2-thin-not-picture-perfect/">goes on sale tomorrow </a>&#8211; for damaging the fortunes of PC makers. In this odd case it&#8217;s being seen as hurting one to the advantage of another. I have to wonder if Michael Dell feels at all thankful.</p>

<p>Gartner now says that PC shipments will grow by 10.5 percent, down from a previous forecast of a much more robust 16 percent. It doesn&#8217;t get much better in 2012. Gartner now expects growth of 13.6 percent down from 14.8 percent previously.</p>
<p>There are two forces at work. First, demand for PCs is generally weaker in China, but there&#8217;s also an overall loss of interest among consumers for mobile PCs, Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal explained in a statement. Sales of Mobile PCs have been growing like crazy for the last several years, and particularly as Wi-Fi has penetrated the home and office. But now that smart phones and tablets&#8211;especially the iPad&#8211;have brought the Internet everywhere a notebook can go plus lots of other places too, notebooks just aren&#8217;t as cool as they once were.</p>
<p>And there&#8217;s more bad news for notebook vendors: Not only are sales of new notebooks slowing, but consumers are expected to keep their existing notebooks for a longer period of time. In mature markets like the U.S. and Europe, notebook sales will be growing at an average of less than 10 percent over the next five years, down from 40 percent during the previous five years.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time that Gartner has put out data showing how tablets are encroaching on the notebook market. In January, Gartner and its main rival IDC came out with <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110112/pc-sales-weakened-in-q4-everyone-blame-the-ipad/">fourth quarter sales data</a> that was weaker than expected, in part because of iPad sales.</p>
<p>Tablets were supposed to be&#8211;or so the conventional wisdom went&#8211;entertainment and media consumption devices, not something you could do any serious work on. That&#8217;s clearly turning out <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110302/so-tablets-arent-for-content-creation-huh-the-ipad-2-begs-to-differ/">not to be the case</a>.</p>
<p>And while for the most part sales of notebooks into large corporations is secure&#8211;Gartner says it still expects double-digit growth in sales of professional notebooks&#8211;that segment is not without its own set of iPad-centric worries. As Apple said on its latest earnings conference call, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110118/apple-earnings-insanely-great/">80 percent of Fortune 100 companies</a> are putting iPads to work in their businesses, and Apple is actively pushing the iPad as a device that&#8217;s as <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/business/">useful at the office</a> as at home.</p>

Cupertino shipped 11.5 million Macs and iPads in the fourth quarter of 2010, vaulting it into third place in global shipments, ahead of Dell and Lenovo and behind Acer and HP. While the industry&#8217;s PC sales grew 19.2 percent from the same period in 2009, Apple&#8217;s PC sales grew a jaw-dropping 241 percent. The catalyst for that growth: The iPad.</p>

<p>&#8220;Each new product category typically causes a significant shift in market shares,&#8221; said Canalys senior analyst Daryl Chiam. &#8220;Apple is benefiting from pads, just as Acer, Samsung and Asus previously did with netbooks. The PC industry has always evolved this way, starting when Toshiba and Compaq rode high on the original notebook wave.&#8221;</p>
<p>And to those who contend that the iPad and similar devices shouldn&#8217;t be tallied in the same category as laptops and desktops?<br />
&#8220;Any argument that a pad is not a PC is simply out of sync,&#8221; said Chiam.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It has long been possible to control one PC or Mac from another, legally and with permission. Though the process can be tricky to set up, companies often use it as a maintenance and training tool, and some consumers use it to help others solve computer problems, or to reach back to their home or office machines while on the road to access information.</p>
<p>But what about remotely controlling a PC or Mac from the newest category of digital device, a multitouch tablet? Well, it turns out there are apps for that.</p>

<p>Such apps have been around on super-smart phones like the iPhone for years, but phone screens are so small that using them to open and operate programs and folders on a Mac or PC is very frustrating, at least to me. The iPad, with its roomy 10-inch screen, is a different story. It actually has the real estate to make the process much more practical.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing a couple of these apps on my iPad, using them to remotely control Windows PCs and Macs at my home and office. In fact, I&#8217;m typing this paragraph in Microsoft Word on a Mac remotely from the iPad.</p>
<p>My conclusion is that these apps do work, but even on the large iPad screen, they&#8217;re too clumsy and confusing to use on a regular basis, mostly because touch-screen tablets aren&#8217;t a great match for the way traditional computers—designed for a mouse and a physical keyboard—work. Also, the apps have some functional limitations, and they are heavily dependent on the speed of the network or Internet connection, which can make them slow at demanding things like video.</p>

<p>For my tests, I selected two apps squarely aimed at average consumers. One is called LogMeIn Ignition, and is the iPad and iPhone incarnation of a longstanding computer-to-computer remote-control product called LogMeIn. The other is called iTeleport. It has been around, under various names, since the early days of the iPhone, and now comes in an iPad edition as well.</p>
<p>Both apps get around the complexity of setup by installing a special free program on the computer you wish to control that talks to the iPad app. The apps can see and control all the computers on which you have installed companion programs. I found setup easy and the connections generally reliable and fast enough, except for video.</p>
<p>But the big drawback to these products is that they are clumsy in controlling the target computer. Each allows two basic methods for this. In one, your finger moves the computer&#8217;s mouse cursor and you click the virtual mouse by tapping. In the other, you can directly tap on things on the remote screen. In my view, LogMeIn was better at the first method and iTeleport was better at the second. But I found both clumsy and tedious in both programs, especially when I tried to combine controlling the remote computer with the frequent need to use touch to move the image of the screen around the iPad&#8217;s display.</p>
<p>LogMeIn Ignition costs a one-time fee of $29.99. The iTeleport app can be used free for 30 days, after which it costs either $2.99 a month or a $24.99 one-time fee. For the next seven days, iTeleport is running a sale that cuts the price to $1 a month, or $10 for the one-time fee.</p>
<p>Both apps can control multiple Windows or Mac computers, at no extra cost. For my tests, I used each to remotely access the same two Windows PCs and two Macs, both desktops and laptops. One limitation: neither app allows you to transfer a file from a computer to the iPad.</p>
<p>While there are some differences between the products, they are fundamentally similar. Once you log in, you see the remote computer&#8217;s screen on your iPad screen. In my tests, with both products, I was able to open Web pages, check email, view photos and use productivity apps. I also was able to print documents from the computers on my home printer, even while I was miles away.</p>
<p>In both apps, you pinch and zoom to enlarge or reduce the view of the target computer screen, and can rotate the image of the screen. </p>
<p>The iPad can&#8217;t play Flash videos, but these apps allow you to view such videos from your PC or Mac on the iPad. But there are catches. For one thing, neither program lets you hear audio from the computer through the iPad, so the videos (and music you play remotely) are mute. Also, in my tests, even over a fast connection, I could never get a video from the remote computer to play smoothly over either app.</p>
<p>LogMeIn also offers a version for Android, unlike iTeleport, and that allows audio to be transmitted. I tested this on a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and it worked.</p>
<p>One big difference is in the level of security or privacy the two apps offer. Both encrypt the remote connection, but LogMeIn requires you to sign in twice: once to its own service and once to the computer itself. iTeleport skips the computer login, so it feels less secure. In addition, iTeleport outsources its authentication to Google. You sign into the product using your Google credentials. This is simpler, but requires you to trust Google with the privacy of the contents of your computer.</p>
<p>Each program has special keyboards and shortcuts to add things to the iPad that computers use but the tablet lacks, such as function keys. Each also has various gestures you can use as shortcuts. But the overall effect is confusing.</p>
<p>Bottom line: You can control a PC or a Mac from an iPad, without any complex setup, using these two apps. But, unless you spend a lot of time learning to get good at it, the process is clunky and best used only when you absolutely must.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple sold a whole lot of iOS devices in the December quarter, according to its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110118/apple-earnings-insanely-great/">just-released earnings report</a>. Apple sold 4.13 million Macs during the quarter, up 23 percent from a year ago. It sold 16.24 million iPhones in the quarter, up 86 percent, and 19.45 million iPods during the quarter, down 7 percent from a year ago. The company also sold 7.33 million iPads during the quarter.</p>
<p>All of the device sales appear to be ahead of Wall Street expectations, with Mac sales at the low end of the range of what analysts were looking for.</p>
<p>On the Mac side, laptop sales continued to outpace desktops. Apple sold 2.6 million portables, up 37 percent from a year earlier, as compared with desktop sales of 1.2 million units, a 1 percent drop from a year ago. As for iPods, while total units were down 7 percent from the prior year&#8217;s holiday quarter, revenue was actually up 1 percent, indicating users were opting for pricier models, such as the iPod touch.</p>
<p>On the earnings conference call, which just started, CFO Peter Oppenheimer confirmed strong iPod touch sales, saying that the product&#8217;s sales were up 27 percent and accounted for more than half of all iPods sold in the quarter.</p>

Both say the market was weak, and both are citing the same reason: Apple&#8217;s iPad.</p>
<p>One interesting revelation is that both Hewlett-Packard and Acer, the top two vendors by volume in the Gartner survey, saw their shipments <em>decline</em> year-on-year in a period where the rest of the industry was seeing growth, albeit slower than had been previously expected.</p>
<p>Hewlett-Packard maintained its market lead, with a share of about 18 percent worldwide, and 29 percent in the U.S. Acer came in second. Both saw their unit volumes decline. For HP, that translated to a decline of more than 200,000 units in fourth-quarter PC sales, or a little more than 1 percent. For Acer, which had hitched its wagon to the netbook craze a few years ago, it translated to a decline of nearly 2 percent, or more than 222,000 units. Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba all saw their shipments grow, with Lenovo leading the pack, growing a healthy 21 percent.</p>

<p>Gartner says that worldwide shipments totaled 93.5 million units in the fourth quarter, which amounted to growth of only 3 percent over the same period a year earlier, falling short of the 5 percent growth it had previously forecast. Gartner Analyst Mikako Kitagawa blames the iPad and other media tablets for the slackening growth. She says the industry’s one bright spot, oddly enough, is in enterprise, where companies are upgrading the machines they issue their employees. For the full year, the worldwide PC industry recovered from the recession, growing nearly 14 percent to 308 million units.</p>

<p>Apple remained in fifth place in the U.S. with a share of market just shy of 10 percent, and less than a percentage point behind Toshiba. Notably, this figure doesn&#8217;t include iPads, which hit a combined 7.5 million units in Apple&#8217;s third and fourth fiscal quarters, both of which ended before the holiday season. (Apple will reports earnings for its first fiscal quarter, which includes the holiday season, next week.)</p>
<p>IDC&#8217;s survey found the same trend, but it differed from the Gartner survey on a few key points. IDC put Dell in second place, behind HP and ahead of Acer in the worldwide market share race. I’ll attribute this to differences in methodology, since Gartner and IDC differ a little in how they count.</p>

<p>Another interesting note is that IDC paints a more negative picture of Acer, pegging its decline in fourth-quarter sales at 15 percent from 2009 to 2010. I asked IDC analyst Loren Loverde about the difference in IDC&#8217;s results versus Gartner&#8217;s, and he said part of it comes from differences in methodology, but also from the fact that Acer is closely held and so is a tricky company to track, and the data it does disclose isn&#8217;t as detailed as the other companies&#8217;.</p>
<p>But Loverde also says decline, whether 2 percent or 15 percent, reflects a stark business reality for Acer. The road to PC growth through mini-notebooks and geographic expansion is closed. It was a good strategy while it lasted.</p>

But you&#8217;ll still have to juggle a lot of technobabble terminology and watch your budget. Perhaps the biggest question for some buyers will be whether to get a tablet or a laptop, now that Apple&#8217;s iPad is a proven hit and a flood of competitors is on the way.</p>

<p>So, here is my annual fall computer buyers&#8217; guide, a simplified road map to the key decisions shoppers must make. I&#8217;ve focused on laptops—the most common purchase—but much of this advice also applies to desktops. As always, these tips are for average users doing the most common tasks. This advice doesn&#8217;t apply to businesses, to hard-core gamers, or to serious media producers.</p>
<p><strong>Tablets vs. Laptops</strong>: If you&#8217;re looking for a light-duty, highly portable computer, it&#8217;s worth considering the iPad, which starts at $499, instead of a small laptop. This is especially true if you&#8217;re in the market for a secondary computer, or one mainly for use on the go. Many owners of iPads, including me, are finding it handily replaces a laptop for numerous tasks, such as Web browsing, email, social-networking, photos, video and music. It has superior battery life, lighter weight, and it starts instantly. I don&#8217;t recommend it for people who are creating long documents, especially spreadsheets and presentations, even though it is capable of those tasks. And I don&#8217;t recommend it for users who require, or prefer, a physical keyboard.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t like the iPad, there will soon be alternatives. For instance, Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Tab, which has a 7-inch screen versus the iPad&#8217;s 10-inch display, and runs Google&#8217;s Android operating system, will be available this month from major wireless carriers. Sprint, for example, will offer it at $400 with a two-year contract. But some tablet buyers may want to wait till the first half of next year, when many more models will be available, and Apple will likely roll out the second-generation iPad.</p>
<p><strong>Netbooks</strong>: These low-cost, low-powered little Windows computers are losing popularity, but are still available, typically for about $350 to $500. They are being hurt by the rise of tablets and by light but larger laptops. Some buyers also find the screens and keyboards are too cramped. But these are evolving. Some now have bigger screens and roomier keyboards. And Dell will soon introduce a sort of hybrid netbook-tablet. Called the Inspiron Duo, this model, starting at $499, has both a regular keyboard and a touch screen that flips around when the lid is closed to act like a tablet.</p>
<p><strong>Windows vs. Mac</strong>: Windows laptops can be much less costly—and come in many more styles and varieties—than Mac laptops. The Macs start at $999, versus as little as $500 for a decently equipped Windows portable. Windows laptops are still dominant. But Apple laptops are stylish and reliable, and usually boot much faster than Windows machines, in my tests. Also, Apple scores high on surveys of customer support. Its latest models, like the new, light MacBook Airs, have extraordinarily good battery life. Macs also aren&#8217;t affected by the vast majority of malicious software, have much better built-in multimedia software and, at extra cost, can run Windows programs in cases where Mac equivalents aren&#8217;t available.</p>

<p><strong>Cost</strong>: Most of the popular consumer Windows laptops cost $500 to $800. You can get full-size laptops for as little as $280, but their processors and graphics are weak and some lack webcams. If you can afford it, a light but speedy 13-inch machine like the Toshiba R705 offers very good battery life for just under $800. All-in-one desktops typically cost around $1,000 and some, like the HP TouchSmart, offer touch screens with special touch software. Apple&#8217;s popular all-in-one iMac starts at $1,199. </p>
<p><strong>Processors</strong>: The most promoted chips are Intel&#8217;s i3, i5, and i7 Core models, the latter two of which can turn on and off some of their functions to boost power or save energy. But there is nothing wrong with buying a PC that uses chips from rival AMD, which usually cost less. For average users, Intel&#8217;s older Core 2 Duo still works just fine, even with the latest software. Intel&#8217;s weaker Atom processor line powers most netbooks.</p>
<p><strong>Graphics</strong>: Integrated graphics, which share the computer&#8217;s main memory, are fine for most common tasks, but costlier discrete graphics, which have dedicated memory, can speed things up by taking some of the load off the main processor. They also are better for games. Some computers have both and can switch among them.</p>
<p><strong>Wireless</strong>: More and more laptops are coming with optional cellular modem chips in addition to Wi-Fi. These can be handy while traveling, but be warned that they require a cellular data contract, which can be costly.</p>
<p><strong>Connections</strong>: If you plan to connect your laptop to a TV, look for a connector called an HDMI port, which is used on most high-definition TVs. Some laptops also come with a feature called Wireless Display, or Wi-Di, which, with an extra-cost adapter, can beam your laptop screen to a TV without a cable. There is a new, much faster USB port, called USB 3.0, but, so far, it&#8217;s on very few machines.</p>
<p><strong>Memory</strong>: Aim for 4 gigabytes of memory, or RAM, on a new computer, and never settle for less than 2 gigabytes.</p>
<p><strong>Hard disks</strong>: A 320 gigabyte hard disk should be the minimum on most PCs, though 250 gigabytes is OK if price is key, or if it&#8217;s your secondary machine. Solid-state disks, which lack moving parts and use flash memory like smartphones do, are faster and use less battery power. They cost much more, but are coming down in price fast. However, they typically offer much less capacity.</p>
<p><strong>64-bit</strong>: Many models now use a 64-bit architecture, which allows properly written software to use more memory and run faster. If possible, buy 64-bit, which will become more and more important.</p>
<p><strong>Touch</strong>: Some Windows 7 computers have touch capability built into the screen, though Windows wasn&#8217;t designed with touch as a core element and the combination isn&#8217;t ideal. Computer makers try to resolve this with special touch software, which you should try in a store. Apple laptops use huge touch pads as the multitouch surface, instead of the screen. </p>
<p>As always, don&#8217;t buy more machine than you need.</p>

According to Otellini, the PC market should have a 15 to 16 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next five years. </p>
<p>Impressive, to say the least, though what’s more striking is how that growth breaks down. In desktops, CAGR is expected to be just 2.4 percent through 2014. But in laptops and netbooks, it’s expected to hit 22 percent and 15 percent, respectively.</p>
<p>What about tablets? In tablets, CAGR should range between 73 percent and 88 percent between now and 2014.</p>
<p>That’s a pretty staggering metric, though I suppose it’s to be expected in a nascent category that’s been picking up quite a bit of traction recently. That said, the Intel (INTC) chief expects tablets to remain niche devices for the next few years, with sales hitting 50 to 60 million units a year by 2014. </p>
<p>&#8220;In terms of the scale of the PC industry, the tablet is relatively insignificant,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Tablets like netbooks are additive. They&#8217;re a new usage model for computing and they are probably good for Intel long-term, but I don’t believe they’ll take market share away from other devices.&#8221; (Click on charts below to enlarge.)</p>

Berger, who tracks the chip industry, thinks many iPhone component suppliers will also sell into the iPad, including Infineon (IFX), Skyworks (SKWS), Triquint (TQNT), Broadcom (BRCM) and Texas Instruments (TXN). Production in the 4-5 million unit range would &#8220;drive some material revenues&#8221; for these companies, he says, &#8220;particularly BRCM.&#8221;</p>
<p>Meanwhiile, Berger has revised his estimates on iPod, iPhone, notebook and desktop builds.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Intel (INTC) loves to talk about Moore’s Law, its co-founder’s famed maxim about how rapidly miniaturization improves semiconductors. The company also prides itself on setting the pace, underscoring the strategy recently by deploying its most tiny circuitry in microprocessors for mainstream PCs.</p>
<p>Then there’s Itanium. The high-end microprocessor line, originally developed with help from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), uses an entirely different technology than the x86 chips that Intel popularized in desktop and laptop PCs and low-end servers. Itanium models have tended to lag the production processes used to manufacture other Intel chips, but the disparity seems particularly stark with the latest version.</p>
<p>Tukwila, the code name for a long-delayed Itanium model introduced Monday, is being built using manufacturing technology that creates lines of circuitry with features rated at 65 nanometers, or billionths of meter. That’s two technology generations behind the 32-nanometer process used in Intel’s latest x86 chips; the company earlier this year announced a $7 billion plan to accelerate the conversion of its U.S. factories to 32-nanometer technology.</p>

<p>How will Google bring Chrome OS to market? The company is working with vendors to specify reference hardware. You cannot download and install Chrome on just any device, you will have to purchase a Chrome device. Google is looking at a launch window of late 2010, before the holidays.</p>
<p>Google sounds very concerned about the end-user Chrome OS experience. Pichai says the company wants to ensure that the displays, keyboard, etc., on the netbooks that run Chrome are robust and easy to use.</p>
<p>Pichai wraps things up, but before the Q&#038;A, we&#8217;re shown a short explanatory video. &#8220;The first thing I want to do when I fire up my computer is browse the Internet&#8230;.If there isn&#8217;t any Internet, I might not even use my computer&#8230;.What if when you pressed on, your PC turned on, what if your operating system was more like a Web browser&#8230;what if it <em>was</em> a browser?&#8230;Chrome OS is a totally rethought computer that lets you focus on the Internet, which is what most of use our computers for these days anyway.&#8221;</p>
<p><b>Q&#038;A</b><br />
At this point, Sundar Pichai opens the event to questions:</p>
<p class="question"><em>If you’re specifying hardware components, do you have an idea of what they’ll cost?</em></p>
<p>A: &#8220;We expect Chrome netbooks to be in the price range of what people have come to expect&#8230;.We are not specifying a price target.&#8221; Price will be determined at the OEM level.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Will the APIs support W3C standards?</em></p>
<p>A: &#8220;We’re working very closely with the W3C to standardize as much as we can&#8230;.In general we want to see everything standardized across multiple browsers.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>Will there be an application store?</em></p>
<p>A: &#8220;The Web offers hundreds of millions of applications. Our job is to make people aware of them.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>What about desktop applications that are not available on the Web?</em></p>
<p>A: &#8220;We expect most of our users to have a second machine at home&#8230;.Chrome OS is about a delightful experience on the Web&#8230;.If you’re a lawyer spending your entire day on contracts, etc., this is not the machine for you.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>Will you support Microsoft Silverlight?</em></p>
<p>A: In the case of certain selection plug-ins, we are working to integrate them. No comment beyond that.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Since Chrome is open source, could  people build their own variations?</em></p>
<p>A: Yes. We expect people will do many interesting things with it.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Do you see Chrome running on laptops or desktops?</em></p>
<p>A: We’re initially focused on netbook-like form factors&#8211;clamshells, etc. That said, the OS is being developed to work on other devices.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Is there any level of offline access? What happens when I’m on a plane and don’t want to pay for Wi-Fi?</em></p>
<p>A: Chrome devices are primarily intended to be Internet-connected. That said, it will have some caching abilities so, for example, you could play a game offline.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Virtualization?</em></p>
<p>A: Yes. You could run Chrome today on a virtual machine.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Are you working with outfits like Adobe to, say, build a Web-friendly version of Photoshop?</em></p>
<p>A: We’re very excited by things like Photoshop on the Web and we’re working hard to make that possible.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Will Android apps work on Chrome? Are there plans for third-party apps?</em></p>
<p>A: Pichai dodges this one. If it’s a Web app, he says, it will work on Chrome. The Web works very, very well for Google&#8217;s purposes, he adds.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Will Chrome work on both X86 and ARM?</em></p>
<p>A: Yes.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Is there a direct business model for Chrome OS or is this another variation of the-more-people-who-use-the-Web-the-better-for-Google?</em></p>
<p>A: We are working with partners. No plans for advertising. That said, Pichai notes again that anything that runs on the Web will run on Chrome. And of course, AdWords does, indeed, run on the Web.</p>

<p class="question"><em>Do you want Android Apps to run on Chrome?</em></p>
<p>A: We are focused on creating the use case in which everything is a Web application, but hopefully we can do more in the future.</p>
<p class="question"><em>How does Chrome handle peripherals? Can it print?</em></p>
<p>A: Most keyboards, cameras, phones, etc., will work. In terms of printing&#8230;yes, Chrome OS will print and we’re working hard to make that possible.</p>
<p class="question"><em>What is Chrome&#8217;s strategic position for Google?</em></p>
<p>A: [Brin]: Call us dumb businessmen, but we really focus on user needs rather than focus on business strategies. We believe that the Web platform is a much simpler way of computing for individuals to use, and that&#8217;s a very important need in the market right now. That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re trying to fulfill.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like clockwork, retailers were ready for Microsoft Corp.&#8217;s (MSFT) Windows 7 release last week with new desktops, laptops and netbooks, those inexpensive, smaller laptops that have become popular in the past year. Included in this selection of netbooks are some that improved the poor screen resolutions that have plagued these tiny PCs.</p>

<p>Screen resolution isn&#8217;t the same as the size of the screen itself. Rather, it is related to the number of pixels—or distinct dots—on a display, and an indication of how much material can be seen on the screen without scrolling. A higher-resolution screen allows you to see more of a Web page, spreadsheet or list of emails than a lower-resolution screen, even if both are the same physical size.</p>
<p>Because higher-resolution screens cost more, most netbooks come with low-resolution screens to keep prices down. But poor resolution combined with a small netbook screen results in frustrating visuals, like Web pages that display just a small portion of their contents, forcing you to scroll down or horizontally to see the rest of the page.</p>
<p>This week, I tested two Windows 7 netbooks with unusually high-res screens: Hewlett-Packard Co.&#8217;s (HPQ) HP Mini 311 with an 11.6-inch screen and a resolution of 1,366-by-768 pixels, and Nokia Corp.&#8217;s (NOK) Booklet 3G with a 10.1-inch screen and a resolution of 1,280-by-720-pixels. Both these small computers display the bulk of most Web pages without any scrolling necessary—a big relief on a netbook.</p>
<p>Though high-resolution screens make these netbooks easier on the eyes than others, I still had trouble adjusting to their shrunken features. I liked typing on the HP Mini&#8217;s generous keyboard, which H-P says is 92 percent of full size. But its touchpad buttons felt stiff and uncomfortably located at the edge of the computer. The Nokia Booklet had the opposite problem: Its touchpad and buttons worked fine, but its tiny keys made me feel like I was typing on a kiddie computer.</p>

<p>Nokia is a bit more of a newsmaker here, because when the Booklet 3G (nokiausa.com) comes out in mid-November, it will be the first foray by the Finnish mobile-device company into the laptop space. Best Buy (BBY) began taking advance orders for them this week. It costs $300 if purchased with AT&#038;T Inc.&#8217;s (T) two-year Data Connect plan, which costs $60 a month for five gigabytes of data and allows users to toggle back and forth between two kinds of wireless connections, cellular 3G and Wi-Fi. If purchased without the AT&#038;T plan, the Booklet 3G costs $600—a lot for a netbook—including only Windows 7 Starter, the low-end version of the new OS, and one gigabyte of memory.</p>
<p>The thing most people will notice right away about Nokia&#8217;s netbook is that it seems to take its design cues directly from Apple Inc. (AAPL) Like the MacBook Pro, the Nokia Booklet 3G is made from a single piece of aluminum, and its keyboard is made of black Chiclet-style keys. Its edges are rounded and smooth. I used one with a glossy black lid, but it will also come in shades of ice white or azure blue.</p>
<p>Nokia boasts that this netbook&#8217;s battery will last for 12 hours; after running it through a harsh test with its screen cranked up to the brightest setting, Wi-Fi on, music playing on a continuous loop and all power-saving features turned off, it ran for almost eight hours straight. This means that under normal circumstances, the battery might last for a remarkable 10 hours.</p>
<p>The Booklet 3G that I used differs from Nokia&#8217;s final release version in a few ways: Mine wasn&#8217;t loaded with AT&#038;T&#8217;s Connection Manager software, which enables switching between Wi-Fi and 3G; it lacked the Nokia Social Hub software, which the company says allows users to track social-media feeds and text messages; and the GPS wasn&#8217;t yet connected to the U.S. map data server. My Booklet 3G included Ovi Suite, a Nokia-designed software program to bridge the connection between some Nokia smartphones and the Booklet 3G, like iTunes for the iPhone or BlackBerry&#8217;s Desktop Manager. But the software I had wasn&#8217;t the final version.</p>
<p>Unlike Nokia, H-P is no stranger to netbooks, having released nine of its Mini models in the past year. The HP Mini 311 (hp.com/go/mini) costs $400 when purchased with Windows XP and costs an additional $50 when loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium. The Mini that I tested costs $474 because it also had two gigabytes of memory rather than one gigabyte.</p>
<p>The H-P model is a little bigger all around compared with the Nokia, with an inch-larger screen; it weighs 3.22 pounds compared with 2.76 pounds for the Nokia. Both felt relatively thin and light, and I carried them home together from my office with ease. The HP Mini 311 had H-P&#8217;s subtle Black Swirl pattern on its lid—a faint pattern of silver swirls noticeable only at certain angles. It also comes in White Swirl.</p>
<p>I ran the same battery test on the HP as I did with the Nokia, and it lasted four hours and 15 minutes, giving it roughly six hours of juice under normal circumstances. H-P estimates that the Mini 311&#8242;s battery will last for six hours and 25 minutes.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t run into any problems while installing and using several programs on each of these netbooks, including Windows Live Essentials, Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser, Picasa 3, TweetDeck, Adobe (ADBE) Reader and iTunes. The HP Mini felt more responsive and, in fact, loaded some programs a little faster, but it had twice the memory.</p>
<p>Both netbooks have slots for memory cards, HDMI ports for connecting to HD screens and three USB ports. And they come with built-in Web cams, a common feature on netbooks.</p>
<p>A cold start on both the Mini 311 and Booklet 3G required roughly the same amount of time: one minute and eight seconds for the H-P, and a minute and 12 seconds for the Nokia. But restarting was a different story. While playing a song in iTunes, running three Web pages in Firefox and using TweetDeck, I selected Restart. The HP Mini 311 took a minute and 20 seconds while the Nokia took nearly two minutes.</p>
<p>Even without the AT&#038;T discount, the Nokia Booklet 3G&#8217;s extra-long battery life and sleek design will be worth the extra money for some people—just beware its tiny keyboard. The HP Mini 311 is a good all-around netbook with a comfortable keyboard for typing. No one will be disappointed by the terrific screen resolutions.</p>

<p>Companies are expecting that Windows 7&#8242;s improved features over earlier Microsoft operating systems, including Vista and XP, will lure more consumers into stores. And they are betting that heightened demand will allow them to stanch recent price declines in the market.</p>
<p>Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), Dell Inc. (DELL), Toshiba America Inc. and Acer Inc., among others, are releasing a flood of high-end laptops with slim cases and glossy designs, and new one-piece touch-screen desktops, that they hope consumers will be willing to pay a premium for.</p>

<a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/72435-intel-q1-2008-earnings-call-transcript?page=-1&amp;find=think&amp;">Intel (INTC) CEO Paul Otellini made that prediction this past April</a>, and it would appear he&#8217;s been proven right. Global shipments of notebooks surpassed those of desktop PCs for the first time ever in the third quarter, according iSuppli Corp. The market-research firm&#8217;s metrics reveal that notebook shipments rose almost 40 percent in the third quarter of 2008 over the same period in 2007, to 38.6 million units. Meanwhile, desktop shipments fell by 1.3 percent to 38.5 million units.</p>
<p>While the mobile computing era was obviously born quite a while back, iSuppli&#8217;s report would seem to make its advent official. &#8220;This marks a major event in the PC market because it marks the start of the age of the notebook,&#8221; <a href="http://www.isuppli.com/NewsDetail.aspx?ID=19823">said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms at iSuppli</a>. &#8220;The notebook PC is no longer a tool only for the business market, or a computer for the well-off consumer; it&#8217;s now a computer for everyone. While the third quarter will be remembered as the time when the scale of the global economic/credit crunch truly became apparent, the PC market managed to deliver strong unit shipment growth during the period.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) this afternoon reported results for its fiscal fourth quarter ended Oct. 31 that were just as advertised in their pre-announcement last week.</p>
<p>As forecast, the company posted revenue of $33.6 billion in the quarter, with profits of $1.03 a share. The company said revenue ex-EDS grew five percent, or two percent adjusted for currency. Not exactly a huge growth story, and some sectors shrank. Notebook revenue grew 21 percent, but desktop revenue declined two percent. Revenue for the printer group fell one percent, as commercial hardware revenue fell 10 percent and consumer hardware revenue fell 21 percent. Printer units were down eight percent. But operating margins for the group increased to 15.5 percent, from 14.5 percent, which translated into an operating profit increase to $1.2 billion, from $1.1 billion.<br />

<p>RBC Capital&#8217;s Mike Abramsky cut his rating on the stock to Sector Perform from Outperform; his price target on the shares is now $140, down from $200. He cut his FY 2008 EPS estimate to $5.26, from $5.28; for 2009 he goes to $5.75 from $6.07; for FY 2010 he&#8217;s now at $7.38, down from $8.03. Abramsky says his new more cautious stance reflects &#8220;a worsening consumer spending environment.&#8221; He says a recent survey RBC conducted with research firm ChangeWave found a drop in the number of consumers intending to buy Macs: 29 percent intend to buy Mac laptops in the next 90 days, down from 34 percent in August, while 26 percent intend to buy a Mac desktop, down from 30 percent. Abramsky says that is the biggest decline in those measures in 2.5 years.<br />
