<p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120103/exclusive-yahoo-poised-to-name-ceo-with-ebays-paypal-head-as-top-choice/">reported late last night</a>, Yahoo said it had named PayPal President Scott Thompson as its new CEO. The exec is currently in charge of the large eBay online payments unit.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll start next week, but there are staff conference calls today and also an all-hands meeting on Yahoo&#8217;s main Silicon Valley campus (meet at URLs, troops!) tomorrow.</p>
<p>Yahoo shares are down almost three percent on the news so far, as Wall Street has been hoping for a big sale of some sort and not another turnaround.</p>
<p>Yahoo will be holding a 7 am PT press conference about the move and presumably to swan around Thompson.</p>
<p>(Welcome, Scott! I hope you were informed &#8212; please do not listen to what co-founder Jerry Yang says on this important issue &#8212; that you are supposed to send all internal memos to <em>me</em>! Also, as one of my Twitter followers, Mike Dudas of Google <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mdudas/status/154552407374835712">just tweeted</a>: &#8220;If Thompson leads companies as well as he grows a moustache, Yahoo made a great CEO choice!!&#8221; I concur.)</p>
<p>A Yahoo PR person confirmed the hire very cordially in a phone call early this morning and the Internet giant also put out a press release.</p>
<p>So did I, of a sort, last night. Given I am too tired to rewrite myself, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120103/exclusive-yahoo-poised-to-name-ceo-with-ebays-paypal-head-as-top-choice/">here is what I had reported</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The company <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/exclusive-carol-bartz-out-at-yahoo-cfo-interim-ceo/">fired its last CEO, Carol Bartz</a>, in September, and Yahoo has been run by the board and also by interim CEO Tim Morse, who had previously been its CFO.</p>
<p>After Bartz&#8217;s ouster, Yahoo said it was looking at a range of strategic options, including the possible sale of all or part of the company. </p>
<p>That was the focus at first, although Yahoo had simultaneously <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111013/exlcusive-yahoo-hires-heidrick-struggles-for-ceo-search/">hired Heidrick &#038; Struggles</a> to look for a new CEO. </p>
<p>The company attracted <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111130/yahoo-bidders-come-in-at-16-50-to-17-50-with-plan-to-keep-jerry-yang-staying-on-board/">two partial investment bids from private equity firms</a>, Silver Lake and TPG Capital, but shareholders were unhappy with the low prices of these so-called PIPE &#8212; Private Investment in Public Equity &#8212; arrangements.</p>
<p>Yahoo then moved to try to strike a tax-advantaged deal with its long disgruntled Asian partners, China&#8217;s Alibaba Group and Japan&#8217;s SoftBank, to sell back parts of the large stakes it has long owned in Alibaba and Yahoo! Japan. </p>
<p>Those <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111223/yahoo-okays-proceeding-with-term-sheet-to-sell-stakes-back-to-asian-partners-while-also-hoping-to-keep-pe-firms-in-fray/">complex negotiations are still ongoing and look promising</a>, which could yield Yahoo billions of dollars in capital to be given to investors, for stock buybacks or to invest in new initiatives.</p>
<p>Since then, the board &#8212; long considered one of the more cloddish in tech &#8212; has turned its attention to hiring a new CEO, in the hopes of trying once again to revive its flagging fortunes.</p>
<p>Thus, it began looking to hire someone with deep tech experience at a large public consumer Internet company in Silicon Valley. </p>
<p>That narrowed the field, with Yahoo looking at a range of choices with expertise in advertising, technology platforms and more. </p>
<p>There is a lot of that on the deep bench that eBay CEO John Donahoe has assembled at the online commerce giant, including Thompson.</p>
<p>Plus, he is a genuine Internet geek.</p>
<p>According to his eBay bio, Thompson became president of PayPal in early 2008, after serving as its CTO in charge of information technology, product development and architecture.</p>
<p>Before eBay, he worked at Inovant, a subsidiary of Visa formed to oversee global technology for the organization. He was also CIO of Barclays Global Investors and has worked at Coopers and Lybrand on information technology. </p>
<p>And here&#8217;s a tasty new wrinkle: Thompson recently <a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=609937772&#038;sk=wall">&#8220;liked&#8221; Yahoo on his Facebook page</a>, along with the decidedly more interesting Kickstarter and Splunk.</p></blockquote>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Yahoo is poised to name a CEO, an announcement that could come as early as tomorrow.</p>
<p>Sources said the leading candidate likely to get the nod is a dark horse and someone who has not been named in previous reports (and not on my suggested lists!): PayPal President Scott Thompson, who runs eBay&#8217;s massive online payments unit.</p>
<p>While the situation could certainly change, the Yahoo board has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/yahoo-intensifies-search-for-ceo-with-hulus-kilar-as-dream-unicorn-candidate/">definitely been moving aggressively of late to try to find a new leader</a> for the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>

<p>In a deal that was struck some time ago and is close to fruition, BermanBraun is prepping three major Web properties for AOL that will focus on pets, men and, interestingly, the weather.</p>
<p>After I inquired, AOL confirmed that the Hollywood production company &#8212; headed by former Yahoo and ABC exec Lloyd Braun and former Paramount exec Gail Berman &#8212; will debut the trio of sites around March. The new sites will use rich features and a slick design to attract premium advertisers.</p>
<p>The pair will jointly sell the advertising, but the sites themselves will be operated by BermanBraun in cooperation with AOL&#8217;s media unit, the Huffington Post Media Group. The deal was struck in late 2010, before AOL bought the Huffington Post for $300 million in January of this year.</p>
<p>While AOL has partnered with many outside sites, this will be the most prominent one since that acquisition.</p>
<p>Since then, much of the new content development on AOL has been aimed at drastically increasing the number of sites with that brand. There have been more than two dozen of those since March.</p>
<p>In this case, the Huffington Post Media Group, run by Arianna Huffington, has typically either created new topic sites or relaunched old AOL ones.  </p>
<p>This week, for example, the company rejiggered AOL TV as HuffPost TV, as well as announcing El Huffington Post, an international Spanish-language version of the Huffington Post that will debut in early 2012, in partnership with El País.</p>
<p>The BermanBraun effort, though, is more independent and large-scale. It will feature extensive video and heavy use of imagery. Huffington Post will be involved in editorial selection, and has been working closely with the firm on incorporating social elements.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a very dynamic and collaborative partnership &#8212; we&#8217;ve worked together on everything from design to picking the editors,&#8221; said Roy Sekoff, founding editor of the Huffington Post Media Group, about the arrangement. &#8220;BermanBraun brings a distinctive approach to their sites, and we&#8217;ve helped infuse that with our focus on real-time, social, and building community.&#8221; </p>
<p>Sekoff declined to give more details, such as the names of the sites. (They won&#8217;t be HuffPost Pets, HuffPost Weather and HuffPost Dudes, though!) </p>
<p>Pets could be a strong category if done in a new way, especially if designed with new tablet devices in mind. And weather, to my mind, is a sleeper category if reimagined freshly.</p>
<p>BermanBraun &#8212; which also develops television shows and movies &#8212; has a lot of experience in the online content arena. It has previously created Web sites for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN unit, including the high-profile celebrity site Wonderwall.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see how the collaboration turns out. In the meantime, here&#8217;s my favorite weather song &#8212; Lena Horne rules! &#8212; to enjoy until the three sites launch:</p>

<p>In a <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/flash-focus.html">blog post by one of its execs</a>, titled &#8220;Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5,&#8221; Adobe said what had already been reported: That it would no longer be developing its well-known Flash for mobile devices.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the key graph:</p>
<p>&#8220;Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last night, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/gone-in-a-flash-adobe-said-halting-development-on-mobile-version-of-its-plug-in/">reports surfaced</a> that the high-profile software company &#8212; whose Flash technology has been a flagship product &#8212; was halting development on the mobile version of its browser plug-in.</p>
<p>Now, Adobe will focus its PC Web browser business on tools that allow Flash developers to create mobile apps by packaging their code to run on Adobe&#8217;s AIR platform.</p>
<p>The move has big implications for Adobe going forward and also for mobile device makers, such as Google and Research In Motion. But <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/horse-flash-apples-steve-jobs-on-adobe-vendetta-in-2010-at-d8-video/">not Apple</a>.</p>
<p>As Ina Fried wrote: </p>
<p>&#8220;The move, if true, would be a major blow to Android device makers, who have long touted Flash compatibility as a key competitive advantage over Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad.</p>
<p>It would also mark a posthumous vindication for former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who took a controversial stand by not supporting Flash on Apple&#8217;s mobile products.&#8221;</p>
<p>Turns out Jobs was prescient, as usual.</p>

<p>At a 2010 onstage interview with Walt Mossberg and me at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs spent a lot of time &#8212; and with considerable passion &#8212; talking about his company&#8217;s decision to dump Adobe&#8217;s popular Flash technology in its iPhone and iPad devices. </p>
<p>While he insisted that he wasn&#8217;t out to crush Adobe &#8212; instead using the metaphor of &#8220;choosing what horses to ride&#8221; &#8212; Jobs explained that the software technology was buggy, no longer useful, and, therefore, needed to be put out to pasture.</p>
<p>&#8220;We try to pick things that are in their springs &#8230; sometimes you just have to pick the things that are the right things going forward,&#8221; said Jobs plainly. &#8220;Flash looks like a technology that had its day and is waning.&#8221; According to Jobs, HTML5 was the new colt to back.</p>
<p>As to the implications on Apple&#8217;s mobile devices if consumers did not agree with his choice, he noted that &#8220;it all works itself out,&#8221; adding that a new iPad was then selling every three seconds.</p>
<p>&#8220;People seem to be liking iPads,&#8221; said Jobs with his patented grin.</p>

<p>When Walt Mossberg interviewed <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110602/adobe-ceo-the-flash-argument-with-apple-is-over/">Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen</a> in June at the ninth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference about the future &#8212; or lack thereof &#8212; of Flash, and about the software company&#8217;s ugly fight with Apple over not supporting the technology on its mobile devices, Narayen declared the battle over.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an argument that the press likes to continue bringing up,&#8221; said Narayen, noting that all was fine with its development for Google Android and Research In Motion mobile offerings.</p>
<p>But now, as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/gone-in-a-flash-adobe-said-halting-development-on-mobile-version-of-its-plug-in/">Ina Fried writes</a>: &#8220;Adobe is apparently ready to throw in the towel when it comes to getting Flash to run on mobile devices.&#8221;</p>
<p>As it seems to have turned out, even Adobe now might be agreeing with the late Apple icon Steve Jobs on the issue.</p>
<p>Until we have more clarity on the plans, here&#8217;s Narayen on the topic at <strong>D9</strong>:</p>

<p>Memo to Flipboard, as well as Pulse, CNN&#8217;s Zite and AOL&#8217;s Editions: You might want to make some room in the already-crowded news and social reader space, because you&#8217;re about to get some bigfoot company.</p>
<p>Next Wednesday, according to sources close to the situation, Yahoo will finally officially unveil its offering, called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a>.</p>
<p>And perhaps as early as next week or in the weeks soon after, Google will also weigh in with its version of the genre &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/its-called-google-propeller-and-its-aimed-at-flipboard-and-facebook-too/">code-named Propeller</a> &#8212; which also might be the product&#8217;s name. Another moniker under strong consideration: Currents.</p>
<p>As I have previously reported, Google Propeller is an HTML5 reader for the Apple iPad and Android &#8212; essentially a souped-up version of similar apps such as Flipboard, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">AOL&#8217;s Editions</a>, Zite (which was just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">bought by Time Warner&#8217;s CNN</a>) and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110616/pulse-gets-quicker-with-9m-in-funding/">Pulse</a>. </p>
<p>All these apps are part of the drastically changing habits of media consumers, helping users better navigate numerous social and media feeds &#8212; such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as news sites and more &#8212; using handsome interfaces and touch technologies on tablet devices.</p>
<p>Flipboard, the most prominent and elegant of these offerings, is now available only on the Apple iPad. </p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s traction among elite users, along with its high-level design ethos and strong reviews, is why Google tried to buy the well-funded company last year, sources said.</p>
<p>But Flipboard &#8212; which is backed by some of tech&#8217;s biggest venture players, who have invested <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">more than $60 million at a $200 million valuation</a> &#8212; declined the kind offer.</p>
<p>At the time, sources said, Google told Flipboard execs that if it did not buy the start-up, it planned to do a version of its own.</p>
<p>Hence, after I heard about the product earlier this year, I dubbed it the <em>Flipinator</em>.</p>

<p>According to sources, Propeller will launch with a plethora of media partners, as well as integration into the Google+ social network. The aim of the search giant is to offer media companies easy tools for publishing content on these devices, as well as a better path to monetization.</p>
<p>That is essentially the same plan at Yahoo, which has been working on Livestand with hopes of it being a product that will woo publishers into tight collaboration with the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/02/16/video-demo-livestand-from-yahoo/">Livestand was announced</a> by Yahoo&#8217;s now-fired CEO Carol Bartz in February, at a speech at the World Mobile Congress in Spain.</p>
<p>At the time, Bartz demoed a magazinelike platform that would allow publishers to put up content easily and give users the ability to personalize their selections based on search history and interests.</p>
<p>Bartz called it &#8220;content in context.&#8221; (You can see the demo video below.)</p>
<p>But while Bartz promised the product within three months, development has been slowed by its complex technologies, bugs and the need to sign on publishers. </p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is pushing the product hard as a way for the company to reinvigorate its media products.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how many publishers Yahoo will have at launch, and neither are the distribution plans, beyond flacking it from the Web site and being present in app stores.</p>
<p>Google, on the other hand, has its Android platform to push out Propeller, although it all must work as well on Apple&#8217;s iPad, which is the dominant tablet on the market.</p>
<p>But just because both Yahoo and Google are big companies is by no means a guarantee of success &#8212; think Yahoo 360 or Google Wave or Buzz &#8212; and their lateness might be a hindrance.</p>
<p>And, in fact, other news reader apps are much further along. The leader, Flipboard, has already had four million downloads and 50 partnerships with leading publishers.</p>
<p>It also has started to introduce rich advertising products and, perhaps most importantly, has tight social integration with Twitter and Facebook.</p>
<p>There will be social elements on both Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and Google&#8217;s Propeller. But news reading will be stressed more, making them more like Pulse, a tiny but highly innovative start-up.</p>
<p>Each of the existing apps will presumably compete by adding on more features. Pulse recently added <a href="http://blog.pulse.me/your-news-everywhere-sync-sources-to-your-pul-0">cross-platform, cross-device syncing</a>, while Flipboard is close to unveiling <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/pre-200-million-valuation-flipboards-mike-mccue-at-sxsw-the-full-onstage-video/">an iPhone version</a> it has said it was working on.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Google PR declined comment.</p>

<p>With the mobile payments space rapidly heating up, we thought it would be a perfect time to add the person most responsible for that current disruption&#8211;<a href="http://www.squareup.com">Square</a> CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey&#8211;to the speaker roster at the ninth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong>.</p>
<p>By the way, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/jack">Dorsey</a> is the same man who also invented a little thing called Twitter, the groundbreaking microblogging service&#8211;where he also now serves as Executive Chairman and now its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110328/twitter-gets-its-messiah-dorsey-officially-returns-to-lead-product/">product guru once again</a>.</p>
<p>In other words, Dorsey is just the kind of person Walt Mossberg and I are thrilled to have onstage at <strong>D9</strong>&#8211;a perfect entrepreneur to talk about the innovative product vision that has made tech in Silicon Valley so powerful. </p>
<p>Dorsey started Square in 2009, after serving as CEO of Twitter until 2008. A software engineer by training, he previously worked as a programmer at a bike courier dispatch service.</p>
<p>Just this week, Square made news by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110523/square-launches-payments-system-that-obsoletes-registers-and-wallets/">launching a new cash register</a> for merchants and a new mobile wallet for consumers to make paying for retail goods extremely easy.</p>
<p>This is a quick development from the start-up&#8217;s original Square dongle and app, which allows consumers to use their smartphone or Apple iPad to accept credit card payments.</p>
<p>Square has distributed 500,000 of these dongles, which click into the headphone jack, and has recently said it is processing $2 billion in gross payment volume per month.</p>
<p>The new innovations should increase that if they catch on and Square can best a plethora of competitors, including a new <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110524/google-will-reveal-mobile-wallet-ambitions-on-thursday-and-will-demo-more-at-d9/">digital wallet entry</a> by Google (whose Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt will also be at <strong>D9</strong> onstage demoing it too).</p>
<p>As Tricia Duryee wrote about Square&#8217;s latest effort:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>It starts with the user&#8217;s card case, which must be set up in advance with a user&#8217;s credit card information. From the card case, the user will be able to see the menu of the restaurant, cafe or spa they are visiting. Users can click to order. When they go up to the register to pay, the consumer doesn&#8217;t hand over anything but their name.</p>
<p>Consumers and retailers will have to believe that using Apple products can be as safe and secure as big enterprise-grade systems that everyone is accustomed to seeing.</p>
<p>Square will also have to go up against a ton of other providers coming down the pike, including solutions from [eBay's] PayPal and payment giants such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based start-up recently <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110427/visa-invests-in-mobile-payment-company-square/">received an investment from Visa</a>.</p></blockquote>
<p>Given that the future of the massive, badillion-dollar industry is at stake, it should make for a great interview session at <strong>D9</strong>.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Yahoo has grabbed one of Huffington Post&#8217;s top editors, Jai Singh, to become its editor-in chief.</p>
<p>The move is a big one in the online editorial arena. Before <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090428/arianna-huffington-talks-about-new-managing-editor-singh">moving to the HuffPo as managing editor in 2009</a>, which is now the key content unit of AOL, Singh ran CNET Networks.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Yahoo confirmed the hiring in a press release below.</p>
<p>A Huffington Post spokesman said:</p>
<p>&#8220;This is about geography&#8211;Jai made clear his desire to move back to California, where his family is located. He moved from California to work with us and, unfortunately, this job requires his being in the newsroom in New York. We loved working with him, wish him well with his new job, and look forward to staying in touch.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo sent out an internal memo earlier tonight outlining the move, which is a whole new role at Yahoo. It&#8217;s below&#8211;<em>natch!</em>&#8211;from Yahoo Media head Mickie Rosen.</p>

Over a 24-hour period on Friday, April 29, 2011, Yahoo! drove more traffic and video to its coverage of the wedding than any previous event.</p>
<p>Preliminary internal data shows that Yahoo! sites serving Royal Wedding content drove 400 million page views on Friday, slightly higher than the traffic levels experienced following the Japan earthquake. Yahoo! delivered Royal Wedding content at a record-breaking 50,000 requests per second on Friday, seven times the average daily peak of approximately 7,500, and video traffic was 21% higher than the previous record. In comparison, there were approximately 33,000 requests-per-second following the Japan earthquake and today, at press time, peak requests-per-second was 40,000 for content related to the death of Osama bin Laden. Yahoo! also drove approximately 30 million unique users, 27 million video streams and 2.6 million live video streams over the 24-hour period on Friday.</p>
<p>In the last three months, coverage of the Royal Wedding and the Academy Awards has demonstrated that Yahoo! is where global consumers come to be entertained with rich content no other online company offers. Similarly, when news breaks, Yahoo! is the world&#8217;s trusted source for in-depth coverage, from the ongoing crisis in Japan to the death of Osama bin Laden. <p>Singh was most recently managing editor of the Huffington Post Media Group where he was in charge of all day-to-day news management and editorial operations. His responsibilities spanned across both Huffington Post editorial as well as AOL, including AOL content sites. In the two years Singh was at the Huffington Post, the site saw unprecedented growth&#8211;the number of sections more than doubled to 24, as did the number of editorial staff, and unique visitors grew nearly six fold, according to Comscore. Besides running the editorial operations, Singh helped drive product development in close partnership with the technology team. Singh was also the main point-of-contact and worked closely with Sales, Sales Development and Business Development.</p>
<p>Prior to the Huffington Post, Singh created CNET News.com in 1996, which quickly became a leading authority in technology news at the height of the Internet boom. At CNET.com, as the editor-in-chief and senior vice president, Singh was in charge of all editorial, including news and product reviews, as well as product development. <p>Late last month, BoomTown posted about a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation">huge venture funding effort</a> by the high-profile and even more highly designed social media reading app for the Apple iPad, Flipboard.</p>
<p>Today, its co-founder and CEO Mike McCue confirmed the $50 million round at an eye-popping $200 million valuation, in a wide-ranging interview at the start-up&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., HQ.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously thrilled, because we think it confirms our focus that people want a beautifully designed way to interact with content and to share it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And there is a lot more to come&#8211;on a scale of one to 10, we&#8217;re just at a two or three.&#8221;</p>
<p>The bulk of the new second round of funding&#8211;Flipboard had previously raised $10.5 million&#8211;came from New York-based Insight Venture Partners.</p>
<p>Insight&#8217;s Jerry Murdock said in an interview that he was excited about the idea of &#8220;social endorsement&#8221; that Flipboard was pioneering.</p>
<p>&#8220;We back great entrepreneurs and Flipboard is that and also in an obviously unique position to solve a problem of media consumption in the digital age,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The sky is the limit. Or more precisely it is the best environment to consume curated real-time content for Twitter and Facebook, because of the user experience and social endorsement integration with the content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Insight is also an investor in Twitter.</p>
<p>Also stepping up in the new Flipboard round is Comcast&#8217;s venture arm, as well as previous investors, including Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Twitter co-founder and product guru Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder and Asana dude Dustin Moskovitz, the ubiquitous Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>&#8220;From a Comcast perspective, we&#8217;re intrigued with Mike and what he&#8217;s doing with content aggregation,&#8221; said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101115/exclusive-comcasts-top-digital-exec-amy-banse-to-open-new-silicon-valley-equity-fund-for-cable-giant-and-nbc">Amy Banse</a>, Comcast Interactive Capital&#8217;s new head. &#8220;We think we can learn from him and he from us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime entrepreneur McCue (Netscape, Tellme) and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million">launched to much attention in July</a>.</p>
<p>The elegant Flipboard&#8211;which McCue recently told me in an onstage interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin had zero revenues thus far&#8211;has changed the game on the consumption of social media.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from media RSS feeds and sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In its current offering, there are pull-quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of linked-out content. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on a social networking or microblogging site.</p>
<p>McCue said the new giant pile of cash will be used to increase its 32-person staff to about 50, international expansion, small acquisitions and more product development on more platforms.</p>
<p>The next in the arena will be the iPhone version of Flipboard, said McCue, followed by one for the Google Android mobile operating system eventually.</p>
<p>Left unsaid, of course, was the need for funding to fight the likelihood of increased competition in the hot space for delivering both professional and social content to consumers on a wide range of devices.</p>
<p>Rivals are varied, such as Silicon Valley&#8217;s most adorable news reader start-up <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Pulse</a> and also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite">Zite</a>, a news reader which was recently sued for copyright infringement by a group of major publishers.</p>
<p>There are bigger potential players, such as Google, which is trying to find various ways to move into the social space.</p>
<p>In fact, said several sources, Google and others have made acquisition approaches to Flipboard, which has instead opted for raising more funding and staying independent for now.</p>
<p>McCue declined to talk about that, but did note that he is not surprised by publisher interest, especially of the worried and wary kind, in the arena.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anyone not respectful of others&#8217; content is going to get in that kind of trouble,&#8221; he said, noting Flipboard has struck deals with 17 big publishers so far, including this morning&#8217;s announcement about a partnership with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Oprah Winfrey&#8217;s and Discovery&#8217;s OWN cable network</a>. &#8220;There is not one half to this equation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>McCue said advertising will be the key to Flipboard&#8217;s business plan in the future, although it&#8217;s not clear if the company will ever sell advertising itself.</p>
<p>Rather, it will partner with publishers seeking better distribution in the explosive tablet and smartphone market, where Flipboard has been gaining traction quickly.</p>
<p>But until that is sorted out, there is now $50 million more in the Flipboard kitty to figure it all out.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this funding, we can grow at the right pace and have a lot of flexibility to get the product right,&#8221; said McCue. &#8220;And, that&#8217;s the most important thing.&#8221;</p>

It&#8217;s also one that presages a tough next couple of years for the Finnish company, which must restructure to pull it off. As we heard earlier today, there&#8217;s already been some significant executive upheaval, with Alberto Torres, who had been overseeing development of  Nokia’s MeeGo OS, <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110211/more-from-nokia-forecast-gets-cloudy-executive-changes/">leaving the company to pursue other interests</a>. And soon there will be cuts in Nokia&#8217;s rank and file as well&#8211;significant ones, according to Nokia CEO Stephen Elop.</p>
<p> “We are not announcing how many and in what country,” Elop said this morning.  &#8220;But there will be substantial reductions in employment in various locations around the world, and that too will affect Finland.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Finnish government is already bracing itself for the hit.  ”You’re talking about 20,000 people, it’s a big number,” <a href="http://www.yle.fi/uutiset/news/2011/02/government_to_help_if_nokia_cuts_jobs_pekkarinen_2357245.html">Minister for Economic Affairs Mauri Pekkarinen told YLE</a>. ”We’re talking about far and away the biggest process of structural change that Finland has ever seen in the new technology sector.”</p>
<p>Ugly.</p>
<p>That said, as I&#8217;ve noted here before, Nokia&#8217;s R&#038;D spend is nearly <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110203/not-seeing-much-return-on-that-massive-rd-spend-are-you-nokia/">three times that of its rivals</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110204/rd-spending-nokia-vs-apple-shows-size-doesnt-matter/">about five times that of Apple</a>.</p>
<p>Oh, and don&#8217;t fret too much, Nokia staffers. Google&#8217;s hiring &#8230;<br />

<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Reached for comment, Nokia refused to confirm Pekkarinen&#8217;s number. But it didn&#8217;t deny it either. &#8220;Stephen mentioned that there would be significant changes but the impact of the new strategy on personnel is not known yet until the planning process for implementation of the new strategy is started,&#8221; a spokesperson told me. &#8220;We  have a strong track record and positive experiences of supporting employees in this kind of a situation and will aim to support the employees with different solutions. As always, when impact on employees are known we will announce them, and if job reductions are warranted we will follow all relevant legislation and practices.&#8221;</p>

<p>He replaces Bob Muglia, a longtime exec who <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110110/head-of-microsofts-servers-and-business-unit-leaving-this-summer">was ousted recently</a> in CEO Steve Ballmer&#8217;s effort to shake things up at the company and stress the company&#8217;s technical expertise.</p>
<p>A 19-year Microsoft veteran, Nadella has most recently led the engineering efforts as an SVP in the Online Services Division, which includes Bing, the MSN portal and online advertising efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;Nadella brings deep engineering and online services knowledge to $15 billion business,&#8221; said a Microsoft press release just issued.</p>
<p>In related news, Amitabh Srivastava, the SVP in the Server and Cloud Division who runs its Windows Azure cloud and Windows Server efforts, will leave the company. He was considered a leading internal candidate for the top job in the Server and Tools Business that Nadella got.</p>
<p>Both internal and external execs were eyed for the job, but it&#8217;s likely Nadella got it because of his early career in the server arena at Microsoft, as well as his experience running one of the biggest and most complex cloud efforts on the Web at Bing.</p>
<p>Indeed, though his efforts were costly and perhaps even futile, Nadella has had some success in innovating search for Microsoft with Bing, including delivering a well-regarded and quickly evolving product and improving market share.</p>
<p>He also was key in striking Microsoft&#8217;s advertising and search partnership with Yahoo.</p>
<p>He will have his hands full running the Server and Tools Business, which is critical to the company&#8217;s future and its cloud computing aspirations.</p>
<p>Microsoft said Nadella will be in charge of strategy, engineering, marketing and product development for Microsoft&#8217;s server, tools and cloud platform efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;This includes developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company&#8217;s products, tools and services, and delivering the company&#8217;s next generation of cloud solutions for business customers,&#8221; Microsoft said.</p>
<p>Delivering such <em>cloudtastic</em> results will be a tall order, of course.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110110/head-of-microsofts-servers-and-business-unit-leaving-this-summer">recent post by New Enterprise&#8217;s Arik Hesseldahl</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;The Server and Tools Business is at $14.9 billion in annual revenue (fiscal 2010) Microsoft’s third largest division behind the Windows/Windows Live Division and and the Microsoft Business Division, both of which reported revenues north of $18 billion in 2010. On Muglia&#8217;s watch sales at STB grew more than 12 percent, and its operating margins went from 31 percent in 2008 to 37 percent in 2010. However, STB is nowhere near as profitable as the other two divisions: Business Division reported operating margins of 63 percent in 2010 while Windows saw 70 percent. Ballmer says in his memo that he&#8217;s eager to see stronger growth from STB.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re already making strong traction across our Server and Tools Business by embracing cloud services,&#8221; said Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer. &#8220;Satya has deep experience in both our server business and online services, which will help accelerate our momentum while setting the course to deliver the cloud computing scenarios of the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>As president of the Server and Tools Business, Nadella will oversee the overall strategy, engineering, marketing and product development for Microsoft&#8217;s server, tools and cloud platform efforts. This includes developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company&#8217;s products, tools and services, and delivering the company&#8217;s next generation of cloud solutions for business customers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our server and tools business is one of the fastest growing and most profitable businesses at Microsoft,&#8221; Nadella said. &#8220;I see great opportunity for Microsoft to grow the business and also lead the way in the transformation of enterprise IT. I&#8217;m excited to work with such a high-caliber team to chart the path for our continued success today and growth in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nadella, 43, has been with the company for 19 years and most recently led the engineering efforts in the Online Services Division, which includes overseeing the technical strategy for one of the largest cloud infrastructures in the world, spanning the company&#8217;s Search, Portal and Advertising platforms.</p>
<p>Nadella joined the Online Services Division in April 2007, and was instrumental in leading the technical efforts for several critical milestones such as the launch of Bing, new releases of MSN, and the integration of Yahoo! across Bing and adCenter. Under his leadership, the Online Services Division has also built a strong engineering organization by attracting some of the most experienced technical minds from within Microsoft and across the industry.</p>
<p>Before joining the Online Services Division, Nadella led Microsoft Business Solutions, which focuses on the Microsoft Dynamics line of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management products, and spent several years leading engineering efforts in Microsoft’s Server Group.</p>
<p>As announced in January 2011, Bob Muglia, previously president of the Server and Tools Business, will leave the company this summer. Muglia will work with Nadella as he transitions to his new role leading the Server and Tools Business.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/engine_yard_logo-183x300.jpg" alt="" title="engine_yard_logo" width="183" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2874" />When Salesforce.com acquired the cloud development platform company <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20101208/salesforce-acquires-hosted-apps-platform-heroku/">Heroku for $212 million </a>late last year, a lot of people were surprised.</p>
<p>John Dillon, the CEO of Engine Yard, was one of them. Dillon was CEO of Salesforce from 1999 until 2001, when he was ousted by founder and current CEO Marc Benioff. Heroku specializes in the development of Web applications on Ruby on Rails. So does Engine Yard. Now his old company is a competitor. He shared a few thoughts about that in an interview last week. But here are the highlights: First, he thinks Salesforce overpaid for Heroku. Second, he thinks the deal is an admission that Force.com, Salesforce&#8217;s own application development environment, isn&#8217;t working.</p>
<p><strong><br />
NewEnterprise: So John, what did you first think about the Heroku deal?</strong></p>
<p>John Dillon: I certainly didn’t expect to compete with Salesforce. First of all, we know the Heroku guys really well. We even talked at one point about combining the companies. They’re into Ruby on Rails, which is the best environment for building applications in the cloud. We’re kind of going after the same market. They were going after smaller players and we were doing more industrial-size customers. Both companies had been approached to be acquired  at different times, and in either case the deals didn’t get done. We had pretty good confidence in our future. So then Marc Benioff goes out and spends more than $200 million for a company doing maybe $2 to $3 million in revenue. It’s kind of an unbelievable multiple. Of course its a massive endorsement of Ruby on Rails, but it’s also an admission that Force.com isn’t working. You don’t spend that much to buy some additional technology if your core product is working well. I think they’re struggling, and I think they’ve created a bit of a Frankenstein.</p>
<p><strong>You really seem to think Salesforce overpaid for Heroku.</strong></p>
<p>Absolutely. It was somewhere between 80 and 100 times revenue. When VMware bought SpringSource it paid maybe 20 times revenue and that was considered a phenomenal deal.</p>
<p><strong>If that&#8217;s true, why do you think Marc Benioff would pay that much?</strong></p>
<p>Because he was desperate to find a way to shore up Force.com. He’s been touting it for three to four years and it hasn’t lived up to expectations.</p>
<p><strong>So what does Engine Yard bring to the table?</strong></p>
<p>We deliver a lot of the components you need to build and deploy and run applications in the cloud. There some 20 to 30 components, the load-balancers and Web servers and app servers, and databases, and Ruby on Rails. What we’ve done is we’ve integrated all that, and we’ve automated the ability to provision it and we’ve hardened it. That means the development team doesn’t have to worry about any of that. And that’s where you make a lot of mistakes that can cause your Web site to go down. But because we’ve used mostly open source, there’s not some big cost that you have to bear, when you’re using someone like Oracle that sells you all this stuff, and then you have to pay 20 percent a year in maintenance. Our customers pay us for success. Building the application is inexpensive. You can build it and if it doesn’t work you can throw it away. But when you build it and deploy it and lots of people use it that you start paying because it’s based on resource consumption.</p>
<p><strong>Who are your customers?</strong></p>
<p>They’re all over the map. And then we have your traditional enterprise companies. From a Web standpoint, we have Get Satisfaction. We have gaming companies like Playmesh that make social games for the iPhone.  Most of our enterprise customers don’t let us name them. But we have a few Fortune 500 accounts. About 20 to 30 percent of the time we have customers who sign up using a credit card and we call them up and find they&#8217;re inside some household-name corporation.</p>
<p><strong>What kind of an exit are you contemplating? IPO or get acquired?</strong></p>
<p>I’m building the company to go the distance. We have the market opportunity and the executive management talent, and we have the business traction. So it seems very doable. The IPO market hasn’t been very friendly. If it opens up I think we’re a strong candidate to IPO in a couple years. It’s not very much fun to be a public company. We have a very real shot at it. But I also think this is going to be a really wild period in M&#038;A activity. I think a lot of companies that don’t understand the cloud are going to buy their way in because they’re otherwise going to get left behind. Our investors are in it for the long haul and I have plenty of money and access to plenty of money. But if Salesforce is going to pay more than $200 million for Heroku then I like what our value looks like.</p>

<p> Nokia spends about five times as much on mobile R&#038;D as Apple. In fact,  Nokia has nearly as many engineers working on its smartphone software platforms as Apple does for its entire product line. Says Dediu, &#8220;Symbian alone may cost twice as much to develop than the iPhone (including the hardware).&#8221;</p>
<p>A shocking metric, if correct. And a pretty dismal return on investment&#8211;unless there&#8217;s another version of Symbian in the pipeline that will best iOS.</p>

Certainly, the investment did little to slow the continuing deterioration of its competitive position. The company&#8217;s R&#038;D spend for 2010 on mobile was $3.9 billion&#8211;almost three times the average of its rivals&#8217;, according to a Bernstein Research estimate. And for what? Symbian^3 and the troubled N8? According to Bernstein&#8217;s estimate, about a third of Nokia&#8217;s R&#038;D spend went to Symbian.</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Nok_RDbreakdown.jpg"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Nok_RDbreakdown-380x207.jpg" alt="" title="Nok_RDbreakdown" width="380" height="207" class="aligncenter size-Medium380 wp-image-57087" /></a></p>
<p>Hamstrung by institutional inefficiencies and the complexity of its legacy platforms, Nokia is spending a lot of money to gain traction in markets in which its handset lineup is clearly uncompetitive, and with little success. Instead it&#8217;s suffering steeper share losses at the high end of the market and margin erosion across its entire portfolio. And it&#8217;s spending about 4 times as much on R&#038;D as Apple, which has recast the smartphone space from its own vision.</p>
<p>As Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu observes, Nokia&#8217;s business appears to be melting like an ice cube.  &#8220;At this stage, we believe that even a good success of Symbian^3 would barely stabilize the business,&#8221; he says. &#8220;A real comeback will need much more effort &#8230; and a lot more time, unlikely to happen in the next couple of years, in our view.&#8221;</p>
<p>So what can be done?  Though some observers argue Nokia should scrap Symbian, Ferragu says that&#8217;s impossible given the number of assets the company has that depend on it. The company can&#8217;t really make a big move to Android, either. That would undermine its current service strategy and alienate partners, European carriers looking for an alternative to iOS and Android, and Nokia&#8217;s developer community.</p>
<p>What it should do, he says, is redouble its efforts on MeeGo and make it a viable competitor to Android and iOS in markets like North America, while continuing to push Symbian to the rest of the world. And then it should integrate the two through QT, its cross-platform application and UI framework. Says Ferragu, &#8220;By migrating all UI developments of Symbian on QT, the company can generate significant cost savings, progressively drive the platform towards a single UI between MeeGo and Symbian and a single development environment for applications.&#8221;</p>
<p>What&#8217;s left to do after that?</p>
<p>Hope for the best.</p>
<p>As CEO Stephen Elop said during the company&#8217;s last earnings call, “Nokia must compete on ecosystem to ecosystem basis. In addition to great device experiences we must build, catalyse or join a competitive ecosystem. And the ecosystem approach we select must be comprehensive and cover a wide range of utilities and services that customers expect today and anticipate in the future.”</p>
<p>“Whatever the strategy is we outline on Feb. 11, we very clearly ensuring that it will give us the opportunity to reopen markets such as the U.S. and some others, where we have not recently been present.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While Google had lots of nice things to say during its <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110202/live-talking-tablet-from-googles-honeycomb-event/">presentation on Honeycomb</a> on Wednesday, there were also lots of questions that got raised but were not necessarily answered.<br />

Following the event&#8211;and a <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110202/mobilized-gets-hands-on-with-googles-honeycomb-video">brief hands-on demo of Honeycomb</a>&#8211;Mobilized and a few other reporters cornered Google exec Hugo Barra and pressed him on some of these issues, including just how big a dent he thinks that Android tablets can make on the huge lead established by Apple with the iPad.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to say,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve put our best foot forward. Now it&#8217;s up to the ecosystem to make it flourish.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, he noted that hardware makers are eager to have a more competitive product to counter Apple&#8217;s tablet. &#8220;We think that (device makers) are incredibly motivated,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Motorola, which worked closely with Google on the development of Honeycomb, is due to be the first out with the Xoom, which will ship later in the first quarter. T-Mobile hopes to have its first Honeycomb tablet, the 3-D-capable G-Slate, <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110201/ahead-of-verizon-iphone-t-mobile-announces-samsung-galaxy-s-4g-details-g-slate-honeycomb-tablet/">out later this spring</a>.</p>
<p>On the topic of the Android market, Barra said that the combination of a new Web-based store and the addition of in-app purchasing were key moves in improving Google&#8217;s app sales experience&#8211;a process that even Google has had trouble executing. The Web store, he said, will work on any modern computer browser and allows developers to much better highlight products and users to much more easily find what they are looking for.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think this is a significant step toward a better market experience,&#8221; Barra said. &#8220;There&#8217;s more to do to make it a frictionless discovery and purchase experience.&#8221; He noted that the company is also working to add carrier billing more broadly, among other payment options. The in-app buying option, in particular, is a great addition that allows for more types of business models, he said. (Not to mention it&#8217;s something that Apple has had for a while now).</p>
<p>However, Barra added that, unlike with Apple, Google is not going to mandate that developers use its in-app buying option. &#8220;Android is an open platform,&#8221; he said. Developers can do whatever they want. That&#8217;s the beauty of an open platform.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, one of the downsides of openness is the potential for fragmentation, a concern frequently raised with Android. That issue was heightened somewhat with the release of Honeycomb, since it introduced features that, for now anyway, are only available on tablets and not on phones.</p>
<p>Barra said that some of those features would be making their way back to the phone, but wouldn&#8217;t offer specifics on timing.</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot of the things we have created for Honeycomb will make their way back into phones as well&#8211;things like the visual themes, some of the thinking on notifications, for example.&#8221;</p>
<p>Just how that re-integration will occur is unclear, though. Honeycomb is Android 3.0, but for now it is going to run only on tablets and other big-screen devices. Asked whether there will be a version 3.-something for phones, and when those features would come to the phone, Barra said it&#8217;s too soon to say. &#8220;We really don&#8217;t know,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a conversation we are just beginning to have right now internally with the team.&#8221;</p>
<p>In any case, developers seemed largely pleased with Wednesday&#8217;s developments. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very excited about the ability to do in-app purchases in Honeycomb,&#8221; said William Hurley, CTO of mobile developer <a href="http://www.chaoticmoon.com/">Chaotic Moon Studios</a>. &#8220;It opens a whole new world of possibilites from both a design and revenue perspective.&#8221;</p>
<p>Casual-game maker Zynga, which counts on in-app sales of virtual goods in its business model, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110202/zynga-leverages-todays-android-improvements-for-mobile-expansion/">also praised the move</a> as a huge win for the Android platform.</p>
<p>“It’s massive for us,&#8221; Zynga’s Paul Bettner told Mobilized on Wednesday.</p>
<p>As for what Google showed off with Honeycomb, Hurley said it should help Google and Android app developers close the gap with the experience on Apple&#8217;s products. &#8220;Many of the features announced today will empower the development community to produce apps that are better positioned to compete with apps available on other platforms,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2023" title="osamapaypal" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/osamapaypal-150x145.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="145" />In a blog post, Scott Guilfoyle, PayPal&#8217;s CTO, made the announcement and introduced the new head of the platform team, Matthew Mengerink.</p>
<p>But the departure of Bedier to Google is a big blow to PayPal, considering that both companies are racing to build next-generation payment platforms with a strong mobile component.</p>
<p>Bedier held the title of VP of platform and oversaw PayPal&#8217;s global payments platform, including mobile.</p>
<p>Mengerink is an internal replacement for the position, having worked at PayPal for 10 years. He previously led the PayPal architecture, infrastructure, payments development, core technologies, international development, customer quality and engineering services teams.</p>
<p>I will update when I hear more on what Bedier will be doing at Google.</p>

<p>An in-app payment option was supposed to be released last quarter, but Google delayed the launch in order to get more feedback from developers, who had been very busy at the end of the year with Christmas app development and sales, according to Chu.</p>
<p>(Meanwhile, start-ups like Zong are <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101208/zong-opens-up-mobile-payment-platform-to-all-android-developers/">already offering in-app payments for Android</a>, but Chu said he&#8217;d prefer developers to wait until Google can get its own version out to provide a consistent user experience.)</p>
<p>In-app payments are important because they enable developers to sell virtual goods and premium features, both major potential sources of mobile revenue in addition to paid apps and advertising.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2794" title="150px-Android_Market" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/150px-Android_Market.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Android has a ways to go to convince developers that its app platform is on par with Apple&#8217;s iPhone, especially in terms of monetization. &#8220;We are not happy with the payout purchases in Android Market,&#8221; Chu said.</p>
<p>Google has been slow to <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101223/googles-improving-the-android-market-finally/">form partnerships with carriers</a>, and so far has done so only with T-Mobile USA and AT&amp;T, but Chu said this is currently a major area of investment.</p>
<p>Asked whether carriers get too large a cut, Chu said that carriers deserve a share of the profits since they significantly subsidize the cost of phones.</p>
<p>Chu acknowledged problems with Android Market&#8217;s initial approach, mentioning Google has made changes, such as taking a more active approach to removing bad apps, and reducing the refund window (the length of time customers have to return paid apps) from 24 hours to 15 minutes.</p>
<p>Chu said his team is actively working on products to improve Android Market merchandising and app discovery with better search and lists, as well as an improved ranking system.</p>
<p>Google is open to feedback about changing the refund window, said Chu, but it will draw a hard line about refunds for virtual goods. Not gonna happen, he said.</p>

<p>Taylor said Facebook will emphasize HTML5 development in order to have maximum impact across fragmented mobile platforms for both his company and those who build on the Facebook platform.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2753" title="photo-1" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/photo-1-e1295981540351-275x206.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="206"/><br />
HTML5&#8211;which is the new browser standard that gives Web applications capabilities on par with native applications&#8211;Taylor said, &#8220;might be a little ahead of that curve, but that&#8217;s where we&#8217;re putting a huge amount of investment in the next year.&#8221;</p>
<p>Already, said Taylor, 125 million of Facebook&#8217;s 200 million-plus mobile users are using HTML5-capable devices like the iPhone and Android.</p>
<p>Even so, when Facebook introduces a new feature, it has to implement it across seven different versions: facebook.com, m.facebook.com, touch.facebook.com, its iPhone app, Android app, BlackBerry app and <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110119/facebooks-mobile-strategy-its-all-about-global-growth/">custom integrations for other handset OSs</a>.</p>
<p>Facebook wants to reduce that friction for its own sake and its developers&#8217; as well. The company&#8217;s first step toward this goal was its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101103/liveblogging-the-facebook-mobile-event-single-sign-on/">single sign-on for mobile apps</a> introduced last year, which has already had significant impact on developers like Flixster, Taylor said.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s HTML5 push brings it into step with Google, which has put a major emphasis on Web apps despite its own Android mobile OS. But even so, the two companies have had major success with native apps, when they&#8217;ve chosen to build them. Facebook has the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/8278380/Apple-The-10-most-popular-free-and-paid-apps.html">No. 1 free iPhone app of all time,</a> while Google Mobile for iPhone is No. 3. (Coming in second is Pandora&#8217;s streaming radio.)</p>
<p>&#8220;Mobile devices are inherently social,&#8221; said Taylor, noting that he feels that the combination of mobile, social and location will be an especially fruitful area for products like Facebook Places and Foursquare.</p>
<p>Taylor said Facebook is likely to create its own &#8220;high-quality location database&#8221;&#8211;which would compete with start-ups like SimpleGeo&#8211;though it&#8217;s not something the company has specific plans for yet.</p>
<p>Addressing start-ups wary of Facebook competing with their products by making them a part of its platform, Taylor said, &#8220;Our philosophy has always been to build products into Facebook that are generally useful, which is why we built location into the platform. We felt like it would have a really big impact for developers if they could all leverage a common location infrastructure.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s platform focus in 2010 was about improving user experience, Taylor said, and he considers that effort a success. He said Facebook reduced spam (a.k.a. unwanted posts about games like FarmVille and other applications) by 95 percent last year through policy simplifications.</p>
<p>Though it shut down ways for applications to recruit users, it wasn&#8217;t like Facebook prevented games from growing, said Taylor, citing the <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101224/in-less-than-one-month-cityville-beats-farmville-to-become-zyngas-biggest-game/">fantastic ascent of Zynga&#8217;s CityVille</a>, which grew to 100 million users in 40 days, compared with the four years it took Facebook itself to reach that number.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Corona, a tool for creating games that can be played on both Android and iOS devices, is getting even more versatile.</p>
<p>Until now, the software development tool has worked only on Macs. However, its creator plans to announce on Tuesday that Corona work can now be done on Windows machines as well.<br />

Corona has been used to create games such as Doodle Dash (now called Tilt Monster) and Bubble Ball&#8211;a <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110117/game-written-by-a-14-year-old-passes-angry-birds-as-top-free-iphone-app/">physics game created by a 14-year-old Utah boy</a> that has risen to the top of free games in the App Store.</p>
<p>Moving Corona to Windows should open it up to more developers, according to its maker, Palo Alto, Calif.-based <a href="http://www.anscamobile.com/corona/">Ansca Mobile</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;We’re excited to finally bring the power of Corona SDK to the Windows operating system,” CEO Walter Luh said in a statement. “Windows’ vast number of users will clearly mean a larger Corona SDK community and ecosystem, but more importantly, we think Corona SDK will play a big role in making mobile development much more popular and accessible.”</p>
<p>However, although the Windows program can be used to finalize Android games, iOS games still have to be compiled on a Mac because Apple requires the use of its Mac-only Xcode tool. Also, the new Windows version is still classified as a beta.</p>
<p>Ansca Mobile is also changing the pricing for Corona. It will remain free while programs are in development. Programmers who want to use the tool for only Android or iOS development can now do so for $199 per year, while the pro account for publishing to both platforms will remain priced at $349 a year.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/telford.jpg" alt="" title="telford" width="200" height="253" class="alignright size-full wp-image-2178" />It wasn’t so long ago that the primary appeal of cloud computing was cost-savings. Companies struggling to slash their operational costs moved their data and applications out of their own back offices and handed them off to cloud providers. Now the question about the cloud is turning in a new direction. CIOs who last year asked, “How much can I save?” are now asking, “What more can I do with it?”</p>
<p>Often they’ll turn to public cloud providers like Amazon or Google or Microsoft. Those are the three names that usually get mentioned in the same breath whenever enterprise cloud services come up. But what about IT giant IBM? It turns out it’s a significant player in the cloud game, offering both public and private cloud services. Last week I sat down with Ric Telford, IBM’s VP of Cloud Services to talk about how Big Blue’s cloud business is going and what its priorities are in the year just started.</p>
<p><strong>NewEnterprise: Ric, let’s start at the top. Tell me how IBM sees the cloud business right now?</strong></p>
<p>Telford: Initially the cloud is all about doing more with less. Suddenly you could deliver the same IT services for less. Fast-forward to today, and it’s not all about saving money. People are realizing they can do things they never could before with the cloud. I was recently met with a small aircraft engineering company, and the guy running it described how he competes with much larger companies for defense contracts. It used to be that doing all the modeling and simulations he needed required buying hardware and software and running it all on premise. Now he can go out to the cloud, pay for what he uses and be done with it. He can now compete for contracts he wouldn’t have been able to go after before. And we’re seeing a lot of examples like that in industry after industry.</p>
<p><strong>Someone said to me the other day that the cloud is going to have to have <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110118/accels-ping-li-compares-the-cloud-to-the-mainframe/">all the parts of the mainframe</a>. Do you agree with that?</strong></p>
<p>There’s a lot of parallels between the cloud and the mainframe. IBM’s view is that we have a single-reference architecture. It’s the same whether we’re delivering the service or if we build it for you. We did a deal recently with France Telecom where they are going to be a cloud services provider to their clients. They already have the network connections. But they’re not a cloud company. So they’re using IBM’s cloud architecture to give them all the pieces in one easy-to-consume bite. So we have that architecture and we use the same blueprint in all the various permutations of the cloud. For some people it’s confusing, but for us it’s all the same whether you want to have it inside your firewall or outside.</p>
<p><strong><br />
Which do your customers tend to prefer&#8211;a private cloud or a public cloud?</strong></p>
<p>We do surveys every year and right now we’re seeing about a two-to-one preference for private versus public. About 60 to 70 percent of respondents say they’re working on a private cloud, and about 30 to 40 say they’re working on the public cloud. To us it’s all the same. We offer a core set of services from the IBM cloud&#8211;development, test, compute, storage, collaborations, desktop. But we can also build the same thing inside your firewall.</p>
<p><strong>How big is your public cloud business?</strong></p>
<p>I can’t give you a revenue figure because different business units take advantage of it to deliver different things. We just opened up a delivery center in Research Triangle Park. It’s probably one of the most advanced data centers in the world. And now we’re rolling out a model that we are cloning around the world. We just opened one in Germany and another in Canada. And then we’ll just keep adding them. We manage about eight million square feet of data centers around the world.</p>
<p><strong>How does a company typically get started with the cloud?</strong></p>
<p>Usually I suggest they start with their develop-and-test operations. It’s usually not mission-critical, and there’s usually a lot of hardware that’s not being used. Usually that&#8217;s the group that buys hardware long before it&#8217;s needed and it ends up sitting idle 90 percent of the time. At IBM we put our whole research division on the cloud because they were the worst hardware hoarders, putting servers under desks and whatnot. They knew that if they needed a new server it would take weeks to get it. Now they go out to the research and compute cloud, and the services they need are usually ready to use in minutes or at most an hour. It just makes a huge difference in people’s ability to get going.</p>
<p><strong>So what you are your priorities for this year?</strong></p>
<p>One of the big things we started seeing last year was an uptake of cloud delivery in industry-specific ways. We’re working not just on the generic things like email and collaboration, but on the specific applications that are used in various industries. Health care, banking and government are a few that have complicated regulatory needs that vary state by state and country by country, and we have the deep understanding required to work with them. We also built a private cloud to help the 29 countries involved in NATO share data on logistics and troop deployments. We also have an initiative with the consumer electronics industry. Utilities is another, and it gets tied in with our Smarter Planet initiatives.</p>
<p><strong>Will IBM be making deals in the cloud this year?</strong></p>
<p>IBM will make a few billion in acquisitions. Cloud is one of the four key growth areas we’re focused on. The others are Smarter Planet, analytics and the growth markets. We’ve said that in those four growth initiatives we&#8217;re going for $20 billion in additional revenue by 2014. Four initiatives, five years and $20 billion dollars. That’s certainly not all going to happen organically.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tiny Boulder, Colo.-based Occipital hit pay dirt with its first mobile app. Called RedLaser, the program&#8211;which uses an iPhone&#8217;s camera to identify and scan a product bar code&#8211;was <a href="http://www.techstars.org/2010/07/07/occipitals-redlaser-acquired-by-ebay/">sold last June to eBay</a>.</p>
<p>Now, the five-person start-up is racing to rapidly improve its second program, a panorama photo-taking app called 360.</p>

<p>The app uses the iPhone&#8217;s video-recording feature to create an immersive panoramic photo (see YouTube video to really get a sense for what it does). I&#8217;ve used it a bunch in recent months to capture everything from <a href="http://occip.it/pt3q02mb">interior scenes of the Boston Library</a> to a <a href="http://occip.it/pt3q0kf9">snowy Copley Square</a> to shots of <a href="http://occip.it/pt3lf74z">Stanford&#8217;s women&#8217;s basketball team snapping UConn&#8217;s 90-game winning streak</a>. The app debuted at the end of July, mere weeks after the team sold RedLaser to eBay.</p>
<p>However, the Occipital team feels a renewed urgency to add a bunch of features quickly. In December, Microsoft <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101216/more-on-bings-new-iphone-app/">offered a demo of a similar technology</a> it hopes to add into its Bing for iPhone app.</p>
<p>What the 360 app does well, said co-founder Jeff Powers, is create such panoramas quickly and easily. However, the options to share that panorama are limited, especially if one wants to share an immersive photo as opposed to just an unrolled flat image. Also, one of the downsides of the app&#8217;s speeds is that it only captures a part of the scene once, meaning it misses out on the opportunities to improve on that initial image with additional data. Also, unless a user is particularly skilled, there can be visible seams within the panorama.</p>
<p>Powers said the company hopes to address all of those issues in the next release.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to satiate that exact urge to capture the scene and share it with other people,&#8221; Powers said in an interview. &#8220;We&#8217;ve nailed the &#8216;It&#8217;s really fast and easy [part]&#8216;; we havent nailed the &#8216;It&#8217;s really good quality and easy to share&#8217; part.&#8221;</p>
<p>Powers said he is also hoping to get the next version of 360 out in the coming months, &#8220;hopefully before they [Microsoft] come out with whatever they come out with and before any others.&#8221;</p>
<p>Occipital, which grew out of the TechStars Boulder program, also hopes eventually to bring 360 to other mobile devices.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very very interested in Android,&#8221; Powers said. One of the challenges, though, is 360 works very closely with the phone&#8217;s camera. With the iPhone, that only means understanding one or two different models, as compared to dozens of Android phones&#8211;meaning lots of extra support and development time.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is a big endeavor to support all of these devices,&#8221; Powers said.</p>
<p>The company also hopes to create an expanded Web presence, beyond a <a href="http://the360gallery.com/#/recent">current gallery of 360-created panoramas</a>.</p>
<p>As for Microsoft, it says its panorama feature is still a prototype, with no firm date for when it will be added to the Bing iPhone app.</p>
<p>At the December event, Microsoft&#8217;s Blaise Agueras y Arcas demonstrated Bing&#8217;s forthcoming panorama abilities in a <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101216/more-on-bings-new-iphone-app/">video interview with Mobilized</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;This is still experimental, but we are coming out with it very soon,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>Demand Media is set to go public, according to an amended filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, with shares priced from $14 to $16 each.</p>
<p>The online publisher could sell up to 8.625 million shares and, if it prices at the top of the range, it could be worth about $1.3 billion and raise $138 million.</p>
<p>That includes 4.5 million shares from the company, three million shares from existing shareholders and another 1.125 shares that its underwriters have an option to sell.</p>
<p>Demand will net $58.1 million, if the IPO price is $15.00 per share, which it said it will use for &#8220;investments in content, international expansion, working capital, product development, sales and marketing activities, general and administrative matters and capital expenditures.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company added that &#8220;we currently anticipate that our aggregate investments in content during the year ending December 31, 2011 will range from $50 million to $75 million.&#8221;</p>
<p>Demand&#8217;s ticker symbol will be DMD on the New York Stock Exchange.</p>
<p>In its <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1365038/000104746911000109/a2201506zs-1a.htm">amended prospectus</a>, Demand said:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>This is an initial public offering of shares of common stock of Demand Media, Inc.</p>
<p>Demand Media is offering 4,500,000 of the shares to be sold in the offering. The selling stockholders identified in this prospectus are offering an additional 3,000,000 shares. Demand Media will not receive any of the proceeds from the sale of the shares being sold by the selling stockholders.</p>
<p>Prior to this offering, there has been no public market for the common stock. It is currently estimated that the initial public offering price per share will be between $14.00 and $16.00.</p>
<p>The common stock of Demand Media has been approved for listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol &#8220;DMD.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Demand&#8217;s road to an IPO has been relatively quick.</p>
<p>One bump came last month, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101223/demand-medias-ipo-which-wont-happen-until-after-the-new-year-now-depends-on-how-it-accounts-for-content/">as BoomTown reported</a> after the Santa Monica, Calif. company had to satisfy government regulatory questions over the way it recognizes costs of creating content.</p>
<p>Currently, using a concept of &#8220;long-lived&#8221; content, Demand has been amortizing those expenses over five years, since it says it continues to generate revenue on that material over that much time. Most publisher recognize costs immediately.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s different from many companies in the publishing business, which typically account for costs of creating content immediately as they are incurred or over a much shorter time period.</p>
<p>Demand has determined that its content has a more evergreen nature, compared to more topical&#8211;and perishable, from a revenue point of view&#8211;material produced by others.</p>
<p>Obviously, since this accounting treatment results in more attractive financial results, the longer expense period is of great interest to many other online content creators&#8211;such as AOL and Yahoo&#8211;which are watching the Demand IPO closely.</p>
<p>While the SEC did not ask Demand to make changes to its accounting practices, the amended S-1 is more detailed about them.</p>
<p>To be allowed to expense over five years, Demand said, the company has to use a sophisticated algorithmic platform&#8211;which other content creators do not have&#8211;to provide proof of &#8220;probable economic benefits&#8221; from that content over that time.</p>
<p>Since Demand has long claimed that it has a new and innovative approach to content creation, it is making the case to investors that it needs to have the correct accounting for that approach.</p>
<p>Said Demand in its amended filing:</p>
<p>&#8220;In determining whether content embodies probable future economic benefit required for asset capitalization, management has reviewed, and intends to regularly review the operating performance of content published.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, it warned:</p>
<p>&#8220;Changes from the five year useful life we currently use to amortize our capitalized content would have a significant impact on our financial statements. For example, if underlying assumptions were to change such that our estimate of the weighted average useful life of our media content was higher by one year from January 1, 2010, our net loss would decrease by approximately $1.6 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2010, and would increase by approximately $2.4 million should the weighted average useful life be reduced by one year.&#8221;</p>
<p>The practice has passed government scrutiny and now investors will decide what they think of this and the entire business of Demand.</p>
<p>Demand execs will now go on a road show for the offering, which is being led by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not <em>all</em> departures!</p>
<p>Yahoo is hiring former News Corp. and Disney online exec Mickie Rosen (pictured here) to run its Audience unit, which includes the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s powerful content sites, sources said.</p>
<p>Starting next week, Rosen will report to Americas head Ross Levinsohn, who has worked with her before, at both News Corp. and Fuse Capital.</p>
<p>Her new title is SVP of the Yahoo Media Network, which is apparently a rebranding of Audience.</p>
<p>Previous to this job, Rosen was CEO of Tecca, a price-checking service Fuse created in partnership with Best Buy.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s likely she will remain based in the Los Angeles area, where Yahoo has a large office in Santa Monica, Calif.</p>
<p>The move is Levinsohn&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110105/yahoos-display-ad-vp-gm-departs-meanwhile-hair-tastic-u-s-head-reorgs-unit/">first management rejiggering</a> since he took over last year, and there is likely to be more to come.</p>
<p>Rosen, who has also worked at the Fandango online movie ticketing site, will replace interim audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">Raymond Stern</a>, who will be&#8211;as before&#8211;running partnerships and business development, as well as Yahoo&#8217;s listings business.</p>
<p>Rosen&#8217;s new job had actually been that of former Audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101004/exclusive-yahoos-david-ko-to-head-mobile-at-online-gaming-powerhouse-zynga">David Ko</a>, as well as former <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants">Media VP Jimmy Pitaro</a>.</p>
<p>Ko left Yahoo and is now heading mobile games at Zynga, while Pitaro is a top digital exec at Disney.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sundar Pichai, the man in charge of Chrome and Chrome OS at Google, is being aggressively courted by Twitter to be its next head of product, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2135" title="SundarPichai" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/SundarPichai-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></p>
<p>However, added sources, Google is fighting hard to counter the Twitter offer, so Pichai could easily stay with his current employer. At Google, which he joined in April 2004, Pichai is a VP of Product Management.</p>
<p>If successful, the hiring of Pichai would be a major raid for Twitter, and mark its place next to Facebook as an up-and-comer in the race to entice away top Google executives.</p>
<p>More importantly, Twitter could use the product help.</p>
<p>The San Francisco microblogging company, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">just raised a massive funding</a>, has done relatively little product development recently, in large part because its focus has been absorbed by overwhelming growth and infrastructure problems.</p>
<p>Pichai certainly fits the bill as a head of product for Twitter, given his job at Google. The well-regarded tech exec heads the Silicon Valley search giant&#8217;s high-profile Chrome browser and Chrome OS efforts.</p>
<p>Pichai was front and center at an <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091119/a-first-look-at-googles-chrome-os-on-thursday">unveiling of Chrome OS plans</a> in November, and touted the Chrome browser&#8217;s 40 million users only a year after its debut in 2009.</p>
<p>But not everyone is so sanguine. Paul Buchheit, founder of Gmail (and FriendFeed) predicted a very short life for Google’s still-in-beta Chrome OS, noting&#8211;<a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101214/gmail-founder-says-chrome-is-doome/?mod=ATD_search">on Twitter</a> in December&#8211;that he thought the product would be axed or fused with Android in 2011.</p>
<p>As Mobilized&#8217;s Ina Fried wrote at the time:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Google originally hoped to have Chrome OS-based computers for sale this year, but has run into some delays. Last week, the company released a beta version of the software and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101207/google-shows-off-chrome-web-store/">distributed to testers an unbranded laptop</a> running the operating system. However, it&#8217;s worth noting that in doing so, Google has hardly made the strongest hardware case for the operating system, using a relatively bulky netbook with a reliable, but hardly power-sipping Intel Atom processor.</p>
<p>The idea of merging the two operating systems has some merit. Doing so would pair a top-notch browser with an ecosystem that already has a lot of applications and developers.</p>
<p>For now, the operating systems are distinct, with Android running hundreds of thousands of applications and used largely on phones, along with a few tablets, such as Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Tab. However, Google VP Andy Rubin confirmed after his <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101206/googles-andy-rubin-dives-into-android/">appearance at last week&#8217;s <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong></a> that the company is working on a new version of Android, known as Honeycomb, that is <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101207/backstage-at-d-mobile-googles-andy-rubin-/?mod=ATD_search">geared exclusively to tablets</a>. (The <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101214/d-dive-into-mobile-the-full-interview-video-of-google-androids-andy-rubin/">full video of Rubin&#8217;s onstage appearance</a> was posted on our site earlier today.)</p>
<p>Acer and a couple of other hardware makers have<a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101129/acer-ceo-on-why-hes-waiting-on-android-tablets/"> said they plan to do Chrome OS netbooks</a> next year once the software is ready.</p></blockquote>
<p>If hired, Pichai would fill an open spot left by the departure of longtime Twitter VP of Product Jason Goldman, who <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101209/help-wanted-twitter-seeks-product-direction/">stepped down</a> at the beginning of December.</p>
<p>The attempt to bring on Pichai to lead product brings into question former CEO Evan Williams&#8217;s role at the company. When he <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101004/breaking-twitter-replaces-ceo-ev-williams-with-deputy-dick-costolo/">stepped down as CEO</a>, Williams said it was in order to focus on product strategy, and when Goldman gave up his position, many assumed Williams was the natural substitute.</p>

<p>While Pichai would be a strong choice for the job, he has not been an active user of the product.</p>
<p>Until recently, that is.</p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/sundarpichai">Pichai&#8217;s own Twitter account</a> has a grand total of 118 tweets, with about a third of them posted in the last month.</p>
<p>Yesterday, in an <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110107/live-twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-at-dces/">interview with BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher at <strong>D@CES</strong></a>, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said some product goals for Twitter included a better experience for passive users and a more &#8220;agnostic&#8221; experience across platforms.</p>
<p>Costolo also mentioned a new zero tolerance policy for infrastructure problems, and said that Twitter does not consider itself a &#8220;platform company,&#8221; but rather one that has APIs.</p>
<p>The Google-Twitter connection is strong, and not just on the we-want-to-buy-you front&#8211;Google has often cast its acquisitive eyes at Twitter and still does.</p>
<p>And many Twitter employees were formerly Googlers, although not all in the same era or area.</p>
<p>Costolo himself came to Twitter after being at Google, which had acquired his last start-up, FeedBurner.</p>
<p>Other former Googlers include many on Twitter&#8217;s product team, such as Othman Laraki and Elad Gil, who were product managers at Google Mobile Maps and Google Toolbar before joining Twitter through its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091223/twitter-now-one-acquisition-closer-to-improved-stalking/">acquisition of their geo start-up Mixer Labs</a>.</p>
<p>In addition, last year, Twitter <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090712/a-google-lawyer-waves-goodbye-lands-at-twitter/">nabbed</a> Google lawyer Alexander Macgillivray as its general counsel.</p>
<p>And, of course, Twitter co-founders Williams and Biz Stone had worked at Google after it bought Blogger. They created Twitter after they left the company.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s possible that Pichai leaving Google might have something to do with the company favoring the Android mobile operating system over Chrome OS, but seems more likely that the Twitter role would just be a compelling opportunity for him.</p>
<p>Twitter declined comment, and Google has not responded to an inquiry about Pichai.</p>
