TiVo Soars on Ruling in Dish Network Case

TiVo Inc. stock was up 35 percent in afternoon trading Wednesday after a federal appeals court upheld a ruling that would force satellite broadcaster Dish Network to shut down millions of digital video recorders because they were found to have infringed upon TiVo Inc. patents.

Another Miss for a Microsoft Co-Founder

Paul Allen’s spotty investing history just got a littler spottier, with a deal to sell set-top-box maker Digeo to cable-equipment provider Arris Group for $20 million. The Microsoft co-founder is the primary shareholder in Digeo, a closely held Kirkland, Wash., maker of digital video recorders that has struggled with sales of its products and laid off about half of its staff last year.

Cable Clicks on Interactive Ads Again

The traditional TV ad is losing luster as viewers get savvier about skipping commercials and some advertisers shift to the Internet to save money and target specific audiences. Cable providers have helped undermine the 30-second spot by supplying digital video recorders to their subscribers and offering ad-free video-on-demand services.
