Some mobile learnings from one of the very first app developers.

Bob Bowman and his Major League Baseball Advanced Media have been in the mobile app business longer than just about anyone else.

That means two things: “We started earlier, so our mistakes were made at a time when even keen-eyed observers gave us a break,” Bowman said at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference in April.

And second: MLBAM is the largest-grossing developer on iOS of all time, “just because we’ve been there the longest.”

What has Bowman learned over the past seven or so years? That mobile is the center of everything. “This is the screen everyone goes to first,” he said. “Reality’s the second screen, and this is the first screen.”

If you’re intrigued to learn more, we’re posting the full video of Bowman’s interview with Walt Mossberg today. It’s a short, entertaining watch.

Bowman told Mossberg that MLB apps are opened 5 million times per day, with more than 1 million daily uniques. MLB gets as much as 85 percent of its revenue from Apple devices, though Android accounts for a significant and growing portion of usage.

"Vine after Vine after Vine."

At its heart, Twitter is the simplest of products, but these days, the company’s product head Michael Sippey oversees all sorts of things: Search and relevance, discovery, and new forays into short-form video and music.

Speaking at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference in April, Sippey noted that his world is a mobile one.

“Product at Twitter means mobile at Twitter,” Sippey said. “It’s all I think about and it’s all the team I work with thinks about. We started seven years ago as a mobile company, the service was initially SMS; we complemented that with a website that has attracted a lot of users; and now the shift has happened, the majority of our usage comes from mobile devices.”

While Twitter works to provide consistency across its core apps, it’s also finding new ways to shake things up. Sippey’s chat with AllThingsD’s Peter Kafka focused largely on Vine, the six-second-video app that Twitter bought last year before it had even launched, and has quickly soared to the top of the app charts since launching in January.

Vine, which is popular all over the world, hasn’t fallen out of the top five U.S. iOS app downloads since the beginning of April, according to App Annie.

During that time, the Twitter app (which, to be fair, many people already downloaded in the past) has hovered between No. 25 and No. 50.

Finding Vine — and bringing it to where it is now — is definitely something to gloat about. Sippey said he and Twitter CEO Dick Costolo jumped on the deal after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey saw the product and fell in love with it.

“We saw this and said, they’ve solved this problem in a really interesting and compelling way,” Sippey recalled, noting that Vine includes neither a record button nor a play button.

“The beauty of what the team did is, they took advantage of the fundamental unit of filmmaking, which is the cut, and integrated that into the product so that you can actually tell stories, pretty sophisticated stories within a six-second time frame,” Sippey explained.

“And then they made it really simple to consume them, so it’s a simple follow model, and with the trending hashtags and the explore section, you can actually find great people and find great content and just scroll through and enjoy Vine after Vine after Vine.”

Telefonica and MTS talk about what comes after dumb pipes.

Telefonica’s revenue comes half from Europe and half from Latin America. But it has 100 million customers in Europe and 200 million in Latin America, where there is just 13 percent smartphone penetration.

Carlos Domingo and Michael Hecker

“It’s kind of like two different businesses,” said Carlos Domingo, director of product development and innovation for Telefonica Digital, speaking at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference in April. Whereas in Europe, Telefonica is looking toward opportunities in business-to-business and cloud computing, in Latin America most of its customers don’t have bank accounts.

Domingo is a forward-thinking kind of guy, leading his company’s work on things like Firefox OS and partnerships with and acquisitions of companies like Everything.me and Tokbox. But he also knows his team is playing catch-up. Of WhatsApp, the immensely popular global text messaging app, Domingo said, “They’ve done something we should have done — we’ve been sitting on SMS without changing it very much.”

But carriers continue to have valuable assets, chief among them their relationships with millions of customers. Michael Hecker, vice president of strategy, M&A and corporate development for Mobile TeleSystems, which has more than 70 million customers in Russia, noted that Russia is a sort of hybrid emerging/emerged market in and of itself.

“We don’t have a problem being a dumb pipe as long as the dumb pipe delivers us the investment funds for going into other businesses,” he said, mentioning cloud computing and financial services.

To that end, MTS is opening bank outlets in Russia, given its billing relationship with customers is often their only banking and credit relationship. The carrier uses its mobile customers’ payment history as an in-house credit score.

Both Domingo and Hecker expressed strong interest in breaking away from Apple and Google’s control of the mobile market, noting their support for Mozilla and Microsoft, respectively.

Try texting, not email. That's just one of many things the "chief old person" at DoSomething.org has learned about how to reach the next generation.

When it comes to reaching teenagers, you have to speak their language.

And these days that also means communicating on the platforms they use. An email is likely to gather virtual dust, while a text message on the other hand will probably get read.

A text can be incredibly powerful, too. Nancy Lublin heads DoSomething.org, a non-profit group that has used text messages to educate on everything from financial planning to pregnancy.

On the latter front, the group had a text message program that sent teens a text message every time their “child” was crying — starting at 6:30 am.

“If you can’t take care of a pretend baby on your phone, you might want to keep your zipper closed,” Lublin said during her appearance at D: Dive Into Mobile.

After being inspired by a teen who texted in that she was being abused by her father, DoSomething is in the process of launching a crisis hotline over text messaging.

While much of her work has been on the educational front, marketers could learn a thing or two from how Lublin and her team have been able to reach the youth market. Here’s the complete video of her interview with AllThingsD’s Ina Fried.

An Internet-connected world does not mean a homogenous world.

After emerging from an ad-hoc group of technologists and bloggers around Kenya’s contentious and violent 2008 elections, the nonprofit organization Ushahidi now provides open-source tools for crowdsourced mapping that are used around the world. And that includes for Kenya’s largely peaceful 2013 election.

Ushahidi is a small organization that has had a global impact, with more than 44,000 public crowd maps created so far around environmental monitoring, corruption, election and crises. Contributors come from over 159 countries, and the platform is available in more than 33 languages.

Juliana Rotich is co-founder and executive director of Ushahidi, and she says that perhaps the most important lesson to learn from her experience at home in Nairobi and abroad is the notion of “context intelligence.”

We’re reposting the full video from Rotich’s D: Dive Into Mobile session today.

What does Rotich mean by “context intelligence”? Essentially, it is using a deeper understanding of and appreciation for different market needs and local culture to build relevant products.

For instance, the mobile advertising company InMobi pulled out of Kenya last year. Rotich said the problem was that smartphone penetration in Kenya wasn’t yet at the level to support a traditional mobile advertising business.

But a less traditional approach is actually working much better, Rotich said at Dive Into Mobile. She told the story of a company called FlashCast, which displays advertisements on local buses using a simple GPS chip that target particular locations. So what’s the mobile play? People riding the buses can earn FlashCast points by texting a number shown on the ad.

That’s not to say that global brands aren’t effective in Kenya, or in Africa more broadly; Rotich pointed to the strength of WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter at finding real markets and monetization in Africa.

She also said she sees lots of mobile technology opportunities ready for the taking, especially around payments and open APIs from mobile carriers. Watch the full interview for details on which local technology efforts she thinks are most promising.

It's safe to say that WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum does not crave the spotlight. But he does have a lot to say.

It’s safe to say that WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum does not crave the spotlight. But he does have a lot to say.

Koum’s mobile messaging app now has more than 200 million active monthly users around the world — a larger audience than Twitter’s last public number.

But WhatsApp has largely resisted the public eye, ignoring most press requests and conference invites, and operating with a relatively tiny team of 40 people out of an unmarked office in Mountain View, Calif.

That’s not to say there aren’t questions about WhatsApp’s long-term viability. Can it make enough money to survive? Will carriers try to destroy it? Since its service is so simple, won’t fickle users switch to the oh-so-many free alternatives? Why hasn’t it expanded beyond basic messaging to become a platform?

So we were very interested to have Koum join us last month at D: Dive Into Mobile to answer those questions and explain a bit about how WhatsApp got to where it is today.

In a half-hour onstage interview, Koum addressed his antipathy toward advertising, his disinterest in selling WhatsApp to an acquirer and his dislike of people publishing rumors about that possibility, the business of selling 99-cent apps, WhatsApp’s relationships with carriers, the strategy of building native apps and many more topics. We’re republishing the full video below.

For instance, Koum said, after 10 years working at Yahoo, he developed a deep distrust of how ads corrupt the relationship between a company and its users. “The user experience would always lose, because you always had to provide a service to the advertiser.” That’s even more acute on mobile. “Cellphones are so personal and private to you that putting an advertisement there is not a good experience,” he said.

Google's executive chairman spent nearly an hour in the red chair, covering everything from his recent trips to North Korea and Myanmar to matters much closer to home.

Eric Schmidt is a man with a lot to say.

He just penned a 300-page book covering, you know, the future of technology and humanity. Speaking at last month’s D: Dive Into Mobile conference, Schmidt talked about those issues and more.

After beginning with reflections on his recent trips to North Korea and Myanmar, Schmidt also talked about the first crop of Motorola products due in the coming months, the impact of driverless cars, and where Android is headed.

“Our goal with Android is to reach everyone,” Schmidt told Liz Gannes and Ina Fried. “We’ll cross one billion Android devices in six to nine months. In a year or two, we’ll hit two billion.”

As for those Motorola products, Schmidt didn’t give away too much, saying only that they represent “phones-plus,” and that they are both “phenomenal” and “very, very impressive.”

We’ll hope to get a lot more specific when Motorola head Dennis Woodside takes his turn in the red chair at our upcoming D11 conference.

There’s no question that people are spending more time staring at their phones. However, there are still lots of questions about how to turn those eyeballs into dollars.

Not surprisingly, those in the mobile ad business are quite bullish. At our recent D: Dive Into Mobile conference, Google’s Jason Spero and Millennial Media’s Mollie Spilman made the case for why the small screen is a real and present opportunity.

Movile founder and CEO Fabricio Bloisi Rocha has some insights into the Latin American mobile market for y’all.

“We can’t have the same approach that we have developed in services in California and sending them to the whole world — because the realities in countries like Brazil or Argentina are completely different,” he said in an interview at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference in New York City two weeks ago. We’re publishing the full video now.

In a mobile-first economy, the importance of 1) getting people phones, and 2) getting them online can’t be understated, said Bloisi.

But in Brazil an iPhone costs $1,300. “The point is the price,” said Bloisi.

In a society where the smartphone is many people’s first experience with banking, email, the Web and Facebook, said Bloisi, “as soon as we have a price reduction, I think you’ll see very fast growth in user adoption — and impact in society bigger than you see here.”

Some things are driving down prices in Brazil: Local production of phones, and finally some government changes to tax structures around electronics. Also, Android.

The other aspects of the mobile experience that can’t be forgotten are connectivity and payments, Bloisi said. With Movile’s help, users have created an index of 200 million Wi-Fi networks in the world, 20 million of them open. When possible, Movile tries to automatically offload data transfer onto Wi-Fi, and its mobile video apps cache content to ensure users don’t have to stream on the go. And for payments, Movile is integrated into carrier billing across Latin America.

Now it is taking those relationships in new directions — for instance, with the acquisition of a food delivery company similar to GrubHub. Bloisi said that in just a few months, 37 percent of food orders already come from phones and tablets — despite the fact that penetration of such devices is much smaller than that.

So what does the emerging-market phone of the future look like? Actually, it will be pretty similar to Facebook Home, said Bloisi. He argued that a cheap Android phone shaped around brands and services will be very compelling.

“Facebook opened a trend,” Bloisi said. “We will probably see 50 to 100 new launchers for other brands — like Movile.”

At D: Dive Into Mobile, Carter described the evolution of the music industry as a continuing power shift from labels to artists to fans.

Atom Factory CEO Troy Carter manages artists — most famously, Lady Gaga — and invests in tech founders like those at Uber, Fab, Spotify and Summly.

“My portfolio is schizophrenic,” said Carter, “but the common denominator is dynamic founders.” At that moment, he was talking tech, but he may as well have been talking music — where he also manages John Legend and new sensation Lindsey Stirling, who plays violin over dubstep.

At D: Dive Into Mobile, Carter described the evolution of the music industry as a continuing power shift from labels to artists to fans.

Now artists find relationships with their fans across different mediums, be it on Twitter or YouTube or by touring the world.

Carter agreed that everything is going mobile — though it’s not there yet. Lady Gaga’s next album will be released in the form of a free app with in-app music downloads, as well as on iTunes and CD.

“The physical CD will take a while to go away,” Carter said — but not really that long. “The whole experience will be mobile within three to five years,” he said.

Carter described a balance between artists using larger social media services and creating their own online spaces for diehards to connect (which is what his other company, Backplane, does).

“The likes are cheap, and it doesn’t really mean it’s a real relationship,” Carter said. “The way we’re looking at it is how do we own that relationship … [But] they’re complementary. You don’t live on an island.”

Mozilla chief Gary Kovacs, who is stepping down by year's end, clearly hasn't lost any enthusiasm when it comes to the potential for the mobile Web.

Gary Kovacs may be stepping down as chief executive of Mozilla at the end of the year, but he’s still got big hopes when it comes to the future of the mobile Web and Firefox OS.

Here’s what the outgoing CEO had to say at D: Dive Into Mobile, in an interview with Walt Mossberg and me.

You’ll want to watch just to see his response to Walt’s blunt, “Firefox OS: What the f**k?” question.

Kovacs also confirmed the first Firefox OS phones will start arriving in five countries in June, with 11 more slated before the end of the year (though not the U.S., which is slated to get its first taste of Firefox OS in 2014).

In the meantime, if you want to see the latest Firefox OS build in action, check out this post from Lauren Goode.

We’ll be posting the rest of the full video interviews from D: Dive Into Mobile in the coming days, so check back to see what you missed or relive the highlights of what you saw in New York.

Slightly time-pressed? Then watch the last 17 minutes of the talk, when the Google chairman took questions from the audience at D: Dive Into Mobile. It’s a freewheeling session, and one where Schmidt did everything from hyping Motorola’s next product launch to lecturing a reporter on the way he would like questions phrased.
From an app that turns your iPhone into an otoscope to a brand-new, mobile-only bank, the App Marketplace at D: Dive Into Mobile featured some of the coolest apps you'll see this year.

At this week’s D: Dive Into Mobile conference, we were feeling particularly app-happy, as one might expect at a mobile-phone-focused event.

But the apps showcased as part of our App Marketplace weren’t your average location-based-layered-photo-sharing, “like Instagram-for-pets” apps, as far as features go.

CellScope, which will officially launch later this year, was the most interesting of the bunch. It turns your iPhone into an otoscope — the device doctors stick into your ear to diagnose ear infections — with the help of an attachable speculum.

Heatma.ps, which last year introduced an app of the same name, gave us a first look at Wisdom. This new product offers easy A/B testing for app developers looking to get feedback on design changes before they take the plunge and redo their apps. Then there was Fresh Paint, a Windows 8 app that makes Bob Rosses (“happy little clouds”) out of all of us — but instead of a palette, you’re using a tablet.

Zappar lets anyone create an augmented-reality “skin” over physical objects: Point your phone at a poker chip, or a photo of a band, and it will cue a video clip or other media. GoBank wants to make banking entirely mobile, and Lulu has created a ladies-only app in which women are supposed to rate the men they know and alert each other to bad eggs.

And those were just a handful of the app companies that were there. This video from the conference offers a quick glimpse of what some of these apps can do:

Mixing developed and developing markets.

Imagine a wireless market that has the characteristics of both the developed world and the developing world. That’s exactly what Russia is, and it’s what Michael Hecker, vice president of strategy, M&A and corporate development for Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), Russia’s largest wireless carrier, deals with every day.

MTS sells iPhones to rich people in the Russian capital of Moscow, but sells lower-end phones that bring in lower revenues in other markets throughout the country. That brings certain opportunities. For one thing, MTS has bought its way into banking. Russia, Hecker said, is “underbanked and [has] a low number of consumers with credit cards.” But MTS, he said, “has enough ingredients to make banking successful.”

Hecker appeared with Carlos Domingo, who has been spearheading numerous efforts for Spain-based Telefonica, and both gave a glimpse of the market conditions in their parts of the world in a joint interview with Ina Fried at D: Dive Into Mobile in New York.

Telefonica is also active in several markets in Latin America, where the mix of available devices varies quite a bit from the typical iPhone-Android mix seen in the U.S. BlackBerry devices are still popular, though they are quickly giving way to low-end Android devices. And Nokia still sells a fair number of devices running its Symbian 30 operating system in Latin America.

Regarding the forthcoming open source mobile operating system from Mozilla, Domingo said consumers still carrying an older feature phone may find it attractive when they’re ready to upgrade to their first smartphone. “We think consumers will buy the device if it brings value to them,” he said.

In that same spirit, Hecker said MTS puts a lot of effort into promoting Windows Phone, if only to prevent the onset of a true duopoly between Google and Apple. “Windows Phone is still a tough sell,” he said. “We believe we need to push it; no one else out there is going to. … If we don’t support it, we’ll have a duopoly until the end of days.”

Hopscotch, demoed at D: Dive Into Mobile today, is an iPad app designed to make coding fun for kids.

More and more schools have been ramping up STEM education — science, technology, engineering and math — in the classroom. Even the White House has thrown its weight behind STEM initiatives for kids.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean STEM learning is bundles of fun for kids, so one entrepreneur is putting a kid-friendly face on a common programming language.

Called Hopscotch, this iPad-only app uses visual programming language, in which users drag “blocks” of code into a scripting area in order to build programs. Aimed primarily at girls age 8 and up, Hopscotch is meant to utilize the touch-friendly tablet and eliminate the frustration common with code syntax.

Hopscotch was created by Jocelyn Leavitt, who, along with her co-founder, was inspired by a lack of female engineers at her previous job. “So many iPads are going into schools, and a lot of teachers don’t know what to do with this iPad. This gives you some control over a programming language,” Leavitt said.

Leavitt joined AllThingsD’s Liz Gannes onstage at D: Dive Into Mobile today to demo the app. Using an iPad, Leavitt grabbed color-coded blocks within the app that said “scale by,” “move distance,” “rotate degrees” and more, to create a somersaulting dinosaur. Leavitt also sought the help of the audience to develop Hopscotch code that would make a cupcake draw a square.

Another interesting feature: Hopscotch includes iPad-specific motion controls. When a user shakes or tilts the iPad, a programming function is performed. Lastly, Leavitt demonstrated how projects can be shared from Hopscotch via email.

The app hits the App Store tomorrow, and is free to download.

Hopscotch is hardly the first product to address the kid-education market with a new visual programming language. Years ago, Microsoft introduced a product called Kodu, originally created for the Xbox, that let teens create their own code. Last year, Google introduced Blockly, which lets users create applications by stringing together graphical blocks of code.

In fact, Hopscotch is based on a popular visual programming language called Scratch, which was created at MIT back in 2006.

But Scratch is a browser-based visual programming language, and Leavitt says she just wanted “to do more with it. We wanted to build an interface that was aesthetically appealing, designed for mobile and with kids — specifically girls — in mind.”

Mobile security outfit Lookout provides some practical tips on how to safeguard your smartphone from hackers.

If you think that only computers can be infected with malicious software, think again.

Today at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference in New York, mobile security provider Lookout demonstrated just how easy it is to hack into a phone, and offered up some tips on ways to protect yourself.

Lookout founder and CEO John Hering joined AllThingsD’s Liz Gannes onstage, where he showed examples of common phone hacks, using two phones — one acting as the hacker and another that was the target of the attacks.

One instance was a phish-y email from a seemingly real account. An email from AllThingsD boss Walt Mossberg appeared in Hering’s phone inbox — only it wasn’t really from Walt.

“We’re starting to see a fundamental shift in the attacks on mobile devices in a post-PC era,” Hering said. “One of the most common vectors we’re seeing is targeted attacks, especially with how easy it is to spoof emails.”

He also showed how a phone user who downloads a game app directly from an email, rather than from a legitimate app store, is vulnerable to malware. The “hacker” phone was able to see text messages sent to the user phone, after that user downloaded malicious content.

The tactics hackers use on smartphones are not all that different from what they do on computers. You might open up your Gmail to find what looks like a legitimate email from a friend or colleague asking you to download an app — say, a free copy of Angry Birds. But it’s actually spyware, and once it’s installed on your phone, the hacker can access private information, reset passwords to lock you out of your accounts, and more.

Lookout said these types of social engineering tactics are really effective, and can fool even smart people. It’s a scary thought, but Lookout says there are some practical things you can do to protect yourself and your device:

Be wary of links from people asking you to download or install something.

Only download apps from trusted sources, like the Google Play Store.

Look at the permissions before downloading any app, and make sure they match the functionality of the app.

Of course, the company also recommends using a mobile security app like Lookout, which can help monitor and alert you to potential threats. NQ Mobile, Avast, Kaspersky and many others offer similar solutions.

And it’s something that Juliana Rotich has lived as the head of Ushahidi, a nonprofit tech organization born during the chaos of post-election violence in Kenya that has since evolved with the development of an open-source platform for sharing and mapping information.

One recent breakout moment for Ushahidi occurred in the wake of the Haiti earthquake, when people in need of help or rescue were able to send text messages that appeared on a map that first responders could use to reach them. Meanwhile, a network of volunteers in Boston and New York and elsewhere translated messages from Creole into English in order to help direct aid to people on the ground. Rotich said that about 44,000 maps — among them maps showing need for help or illustrating corruption — have been created and put to use in as many as 159 countries.

The organization is also working on a new product for the African market. Behold, the BRCK (pictured below), which Rotich described as a sort of “backup generator for the Internet.” Power outages are a constant problem in Africa. The BRCK will provide wireless 3G or 4G Internet connections and power to last about <del datetime="2013-04-16T20:39:42+00:00">four or five</del> as long as 12 hours. When the power goes out and takes the terrestrial network down with it, coding sessions or other work can continue. The organization will launch a Kickstarter campaign in the next two weeks to raise funds in order to build it.

Everyone loves a good selfie — just not necessarily for more than 10 seconds.

That looks to be evident with Snapchat, the self-destructing photo messaging service that has exploded in popularity in just a short time. Even for mobile photo services — which are incredibly popular right now and certainly in no short supply — the growth rate is impressive, moving more than 150 million photos through the service daily.

Here’s a question: Why? Is there something inherent in the medium that allows a small company like Snapchat to dwarf Instagram’s daily photo volume in such short order? Part of the answer, at least, could be found in our inclination to forget.

“In this world, deletion as the default works pretty well,” said Evan Spiegel, founder of Snapchat, at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference. “We believe the default should be ephemerality.”

Interesting, considering that the focus of competitors like Instagram, Twitter and the like is on curation of an album over time, a collection of moments to be shared, reflected upon and ultimately revisited.

Obviously, people enjoy that aspect of mobile photos. Instagram is still considered highly successful, boasting more than 100 million monthly active users and a volume of more than 40 million photos moving through the service daily. It’s why Facebook bought the thing for three-quarters of a billion bucks.

But, as Snapchat proves, there are obviously other use cases outside of curation. Namely, photos as “communication rather than artwork,” as the young founder put it.

Not to mention the benefits of fading away. “Snapchat allows you to acknowledge where you are without having to have a picture of me in seventh grade with braces or headgear,” Spiegel said.

Here’s the big quandary. How does Snapchat monetize? It’s not like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, in that there’s no flowing stream to easily stick ads into.

Still, Spiegel said he’s open to ads, in whatever form they may take.

“I like ads, personally. I think ads can work really well on mobile,” Spiegel said, citing a recent hire who will focus exclusively on monetization efforts. “We’ve been playing around with a few prototypes.”

Good news for Snapchat’s investors, I’m sure. I just hope that when and if ads do end up on the service, Spiegel can convince advertisers that users won’t forget them as well.

(Hat tip to the New Yorker’s Matt Buchanan for his wonderful use of the word “ephemerality.”)

It’s the ad industry buzzword that has been circulating in recent years, the term for ads created by companies that look more like content and less like a traditional advertisement. And believe it or not, some of those native ads are actually quite good.

For a quick taste, check out a clip featuring Google’s Jason Spero and Millennial Media’s Mollie Spilman, two industry vets talking at D: Dive Into Mobile about a few of their recent favorite native campaigns:

A quick catch-up guide to the first day of our global mobile conference.

D: Dive Into Mobile — Global Edition kicked off Monday with an afternoon of interviews that touched on everything from driving directions to the future of mobile operating systems. Here’s a handful of highlights:

“Firefox OS? What the f**k?” asked AllThingsD’s Walt Mossberg, kicking off the day’s first interview. Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs said it’s all about the open Web standards that underlie the forthcoming Firefox operating system.

Google may not have 44 million robotic cars on the road, but Waze has 44 million users, Waze CEO Noam Bardin said, and they make Waze’s maps better by using them. Bardin touted the power of crowdsourced driving directions, which so far have “validated” about 1.5 billion km (or about 932 million miles).

Google’s Jason Spero, appearing with Millennial Media’s Mollie Spillman, said that mobile ads will have more potential once they can track user behavior for advertisers’ sake. However, Spillman added, “It’s becoming more mainstream and mandatory that mobile is part of the marketing budget or media spend.”

Xiaomi sold 7.19 million handsets in 2012, and expects to sell double that number this year. The high-end smartphone company is one of China’s fastest-growing. “We believe the future of the mobile Internet is really about services,” said company president Bin Lin.

Lady Gaga’s manager Troy Carter simultaneously balanced Gaga’s plans for a hybrid album-app with the fact that physical CD sales are still incredibly important in the music business: “You can’t shock the water in our business. It’s about gradual change,” he said. “You still have to cater to the market that’s out there.”

Google's Jason Spero and Millennial Media's Mollie Spilman say that advertisers need to see the value in spending on mobile.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: We’re shifting from desktop computing to a mobile world.

Cool for phone sales (see Apple and Samsung)! Not so cool, however, for ad sales execs, who have spent the past two decades trying to sell Web real estate to advertisers. Now they’ve got to figure out how to sell that space on even smaller screens.

Enter Google’s Jason Spero and Millennial Media’s Mollie Spilman, two of the people charged with figuring out how to usher in (read: sell) a new era of online advertising.

The biggest problem? Helping advertisers see when their mobile ads are actually working.

“Until you can show [that tracking connection], they’re not going to pay as much for it,” Google’s Spero said at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference. “We’re investing heavily in helping people track the value.”

It’s obviously not a Google-only problem. Others, especially Facebook and Twitter, are trying to figure out ways to tie things like tweets and shares directly to consumer activity, and to show just how far something like a promoted tweet really goes for an advertiser willing to shell out a hundred grand on it.

It’s also likely the reason that advertisers aren’t willing to spend as much on a mobile ad compared to, say, a desktop ad or traditional media ads in print or on TV.

“Sometimes [advertiser activity] is coming from this test sort of mentality,” Spilman said.

Ever the optimists, Spilman and Spero are confident that things are looking up. “It’s becoming more mainstream and mandatory that mobile is part of the marketing budget or media spend,” Spilman said.

The best way to build on that, Spero said, is ultimately to make the tools to figure out if it’s actually working better over time.

“We have a responsibility that our customers can attribute the maximum amount of what they’re buying … and to make that scalable,” Spero said.

If the duopoly of the massively popular Android and iOS is working for consumers why do we need a new operating system?

No one likes a duopoly — in the tech business industry, that is. And one of the largest duopolies today is the mobile OS split between Apple’s iOS operating system and Google’s Android.

Mozilla, the foundation behind the popular Firefox Web browser, wants to take the lead amid the multiple companies vying for third place. The company is working on the Firefox OS, a mobile system software initiative similar to what Google is doing with the Chrome OS for the desktop. In a nutshell, it’s taking the set of standards coding for a browser environment and bringing it to an entire operating system for the phone.

Here’s the thing: If the duopoly of the massively popular Android and iOS is working for consumers — and sales prove that it obviously is — why do we need a new operating system entirely?

Or, as Walt Mossberg put it so aptly: “Firefox OS. What the f**k?”

Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs’s answer, in two words: The ecosystem.

Kovacs made the case for Firefox OS at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference today, claiming that while consumers may enjoy the many apps they have now, that experience will grow exponentially if Firefox OS is adopted.

“Our whole mission is to stimulate the ecosystem,” Kovacs said, citing the first wave of innovation that Mozilla’s Firefox browser created years ago when first released. “The number of people, websites and experiences exploded.”

The main pitch here is to developers: Unlike Android or iOS, Firefox OS apps are based on open Web standards, which many developers came of age using over the rise of the first dot-com boom.

And that could appeal to coders in the developing world, where the Firefox OS is really targeted. Worldwide low-cost (under $150) smartphone shipments are forecast to grow to 311 million in 2016, after having doubled every year since 2010, according to research data from NPD group. Markets like South America, Africa and Asia are ripe for the targeting in going after the low end.

Of course, Kovacs and company will face stiff competition, as both Google and Facebook are going after international emerging markets with Android and Facebook Home, respectively.

Kovacs admits that we may not see the ecosystem explode right off the bat. The company expects the first wave of devices to kick things off, while hoping for wider appeal later on, after developers (hopefully) take up arms and start creating apps for the OS.

“This is a V1 product,” Kovacs said. “Short-term, it will be a brand appeal. But the innovation will explode later.”

Not just an app for storing contact info, Humin looks to highlight personal relationships while encouraging new ones.

Take a look at your smartphone’s address book. Maybe it does a good job of storing basic contact information, but it doesn’t tell you much about the person beyond that, and if you have a lot of contacts, it can get pretty messy. One San Francisco-based company is looking to change all that.

Shown off today at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference in New York, Humin is an app that makes your phonebook more than just a repository for numbers and email addresses.

The app has several goals: To add a more human (hence the name) touch to your address book by highlighting your relationship to each contact, to make search easier, and to help you connect with new people through trusted sources.

“We thought it was time for people to really start making sense of relationships. How many times have you looked at your phone and said, ‘How do I even know this person?’” said Ankur Jain, the app’s creator.

Jain joined AllThingsD’s Liz Gannes on stage to demo Humin.

Using your phone’s address book, the app creates a profile for each individual, and pulls information about that contact from various social networks and sources, including Facebook, LinkedIn and Google. You can add notes, such as when and where you met that person, or his or her favorite sports team.

But even if you don’t add notes, Humin “ties deeply” into native apps on your phone to match a contact with a place. Let’s say you meet someone at a conference, which is entered into your calendar. Humin knows that you met John Doe that week, so it’s likely you met John at the conference.

“Naturally, we think in terms of ‘who works at company X and lives in San Francisco?’ Our app lets you type just that and search in a way that’s similar to how our brain works,” Jain said.

The app also searches friends of friends, and tells you which of your contacts is the strongest connection, so you can ask for an introduction.

Privacy and security is always a concern with apps that access your address book. Jain said that all the information that’s pulled from your contact lists, social networks and public records is ingested in the individual’s mobile device.

Humin is scheduled for release this summer as a free iOS app. An Android version will follow soon after.

Prior to starting Humin, Jain founded the Kairos Society, a nonprofit organization for young entrepreneurs and innovators working on solutions for education, biotechnology, healthcare and more.

Tickets are scarce, and we understand that not everyone can make it there in person. But our editorial team will be covering the sessions live, and we will release full videos of every session in the ensuing weeks.

And, for one block of interviews, we are offering free live videostreaming.

These include some of our most timely speakers:

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, whose book “The New Digital Age” will be released later this month

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum (who says he’s not getting bought by Google), in one of his first onstage interviews

Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer, just a couple of days after the release of Facebook Home and the HTC First

Juliana Rotich, the executive director of Ushahidi, the citizen report mapping project that just helped facilitate a mostly peaceful Kenyan presidential election

Streaming starts at 9:45 am ET on Tuesday, April 16. There will be a short break between the Google and WhatsApp sessions. There will also be a demo of an exciting new health-care startup that’s currently in stealth mode.

WhatsApp exec says there's no truth to acquisition rumors.

Popular messaging app WhatsApp says it is not in discussions to sell the company to Google.

Neeraj Arora, WhatsApp’s business development head, told AllThingsD today that the company is not holding sales talks with Google.

Earlier this week, a single-source report from Digital Trends said that the company was contemplating a $1 billion sale to the search giant.

Arora declined to comment further.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum speaks at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference in New York next week (this is one of the sessions that’s being livestreamed; more details on that soon).

WhatsApp has been the subject of similar rumors before, but with Facebook as the rumored buyer in December. At the time, the company said the reports were “not factually accurate.”

WhatsApp is one of the most popular mobile apps in the world, with a very simple formula of cross-platform messaging (mostly text, but also photo, video, audio and location sharing). The app costs 99 cents on iOS and, in some countries, the service costs 99 cents per year on Android.
