<p>Neil Ashe, who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101208/cnets-neil-ashe-stepping-down/">left his job running CBS Interactive</a> in late 2010, has taken a job helming Wal-Mart Stores&#8217; global online commerce unit.</p>
<p>The retail behemoth said that Ashe will become president and CEO of its Global eCommerce division, replacing the retiring Eduardo Castro-Wright. He will operate out of Wal-Mart&#8217;s Silicon Valley office in San Bruno, Calif., but will likely make a lot of trips to the company&#8217;s HQ in Bentonville, Ark. (Ashe does not have the U.S.-based e-commerce business; Walmart.com is run by Joel Anderson, who reports up through the Wal-Mart U.S. stores business.)</p>
<p>In an interview earlier today, Ashe said that he was &#8220;impressed by the company&#8217;s realization that the consumer is changing &#8230; and the commitment to global e-commerce.&#8221;</p>
<p>Noting that Wal-Mart stores see 200 million customers a week, he said the goal was to make the online experience as compelling as the offline one.</p>
<p>&#8220;There has to be almost an indifference between physical stores and e-commerce,&#8221; said Ashe. &#8220;The whole company committed to winning on the Internet.&#8221;</p>
<p>Since he left CBS, Ashe has been advising a variety of Web start-ups, including LivingSocial. Ashe <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110404/livingsocial-adds-former-cbs-president-neil-ashe-to-board/">joined the board</a> of the Washington, D.C.-based social buying company last spring.</p>
<p>The job at Wal-Mart is a big one, especially given its up-and-down history in the online space. That includes the recent decision to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110809/wal-mart-shutters-digital-music-store-you-didnt-know-existed/">stop selling MP3s</a> from its Web site.</p>
<p>It has also stepped up its efforts, including a number of small acquisitions, such as mobile advertising start-up <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110913/walmart-acquires-social-ad-targeting-start-up-oneriot/">OneRiot</a> and mobile app company <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120104/wal-mart-acquires-small-mobile-agency-to-beef-up-tech-team/">Small Society</a>.</p>
<p>But it did pay big bucks &#8212; reportedly $300 million &#8212; for social media platform <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110418/exclusive-wal-mart-paid-300-million-plus-for-kosmix/">Kosmix</a>. </p>
<p>Ashe noted that Wal-Mart is indeed still dwarfed online by online dominator Amazon. &#8220;They are very innovative and strategically adept,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>With 59 million monthly visitors to its U.S. Web site and an aim to go global, how Ashe navigates Wal-Mart&#8217;s path in the next years will be interesting to watch.</p>

With all of this, it is clear that Walmart is the best- positioned retailer to deliver this multi-channel experience to consumers, many of whom are already connected to the world through smart phones and social media.&#8221;</p>
<p>Duke continued, &#8220;With his strong personal leadership skills, financial background and experience in successfully working within a major corporation to lead its Internet division, Neil is the ideal leader to help us build this business. He has led companies through all stages of growth and maturity. He also has a deep understanding of the interactive space and how to attract and convert online customers. <p>As president of CBS Interactive, based in San Francisco, Ashe led the interactive content business with operations in the U.S., Europe and China. After leading the successful integration of CNET Networks with CBS, he and his team leveraged existing company assets to ramp up CBS entertainment content distribution online, including making CBS.com the largest television network site in the industry. </p>
<p>Prior to this, Ashe was CEO of CNET Networks, initially best known for providing technology-related information, product reviews and price comparisons through CNET.com. He also oversaw dramatic development in the company’s China division, taking it from a small magazine and events operator to a highly profitable, fast-growing online business. During his tenure, the company&#8217;s value increased from $100 million to $1.8 billion. Ultimately, Ashe led the sale of the company to CBS and became president of CBS Interactive at that time.</p>
<p>Earlier, Ashe founded a company focused on using the Internet to improve K-12 education in the U.S. Prior to this, he was a partner and managing director at private investment firm Crest Communications Holdings and, before that, was an associate at Smith Barney, the investment bank now part of Citigroup. </p>
<p>Ashe has an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and a B.S. in Business Administration, with a major in Finance, from Georgetown University. He serves on the boards of LivingSocial, AMC Networks and the Georgetown University Board of Regents.</p>
<p>Over the past year, Walmart has made investments in capabilities and talent as it continues to build Global eCommerce. It has also further strengthened its position through the acquisition of small Internet specialty companies and continues to expand in new markets such as China and Brazil, including a minority stake in Chinese Internet retailer Yihaodian.</p></blockquote>

<p>When you own a large chunk of a major Silicon Valley Internet company, it&#8217;s probably not a surprise that you want to come to the center of the tech world to have a look around.</p>
<p>But Yahoo &#8212; of which Third Point&#8217;s Daniel Loeb owns over five percent &#8212; is unlikely to get a visit from the activist shareholder, who is in California this week.</p>
<p>Several sources said he has contacted many former Yahoos and other tech execs for meetings in the Internet heartland to chitchat about digital issues.</p>
<p>And, of course, search for possible board members for an alternate slate of directors, in case he decides to wage a proxy fight against Yahoo. </p>
<p>The earliest nominations for directors can be submitted is February 24 for those &#8220;shareholder proposals not intended for inclusion in proxy materials and for nomination of director candidates,&#8221; according to Yahoo&#8217;s corporate bylaws on such matters.</p>
<p>Loeb then has a month after that to submit a competing slate. In addition, many of Yahoo&#8217;s major investors are mulling backing Loeb if he initiates a battle for control of the company. </p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not a definite move as yet. The New York-based investor has not decided whether he will take on a proxy fight, sources said, given he has yet to assess Yahoo&#8217;s new CEO, former eBay exec Scott Thompson. </p>
<p>Thompson was president of the online commerce site&#8217;s PayPal payments division.</p>
<p>But while there is a formal process, you will hear a lot of noise coming long before that, unless Yahoo gives Loeb board seats to quiet him down &#8212; which is unlikely but possible.</p>
<p>Such an ugly fight is not one Yahoo can afford to have, and it has already shown some cloddish sensibilities in its response to a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111104/yahoos-activist-shareholder-loeb-now-targeting-jerry-yang/">recent letters by Loeb</a> asking for the ouster of its Chairman Roy Bostock and co-founder and director Jerry Yang.</p>
<p>But given how badly the last Yahoo shareholder tussle with Carl Icahn went, another proxy battle could be deadly, and might drag on through the first half of 2012. In his Yahoo tussle, Icahn ultimately got three seats on the Yahoo board, but eventually went away with everyone the poorer.</p>
<p>And no one wants a replay of <em>that</em>. </p>

<p>Maybe get something cooking in the whole what-will-Yahoo-do stakes, now that one of Yahoo&#8217;s more active board members is back.</p>
<p>And by &#8220;back,&#8221; I mean that Kenny &#8212; no longer a candidate for CEO &#8212; has no further need to recuse himself from the strategic process in which the Silicon Valley Internet company finds itself.</p>
<p>In an interview with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111101/no-yahoo-ceo-job-for-me-says-yahoo-board-member-david-kenny/">Advertising Age</a> last week, Kenny &#8212; the well-regarded online ad exec who recently stepped down as president of network infrastructure giant Akamai &#8212; released an unusual statement:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>As a matter of policy, I do not comment on matters related to Yahoo as a Yahoo director. However, as a personal matter, I want to clarify that I believe Yahoo is a great company with enormous potential, but I am not &#8212; and will not be &#8212; a candidate for the CEO position. I look forward to my continued service on the Yahoo Board of Directors.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>By removing himself from the fray, that means, according to several sources, that Kenny will be diving back into sleeve-rolling duties at Yahoo, as one of its &#8212; how can I put this? &#8212; less <em>comatose</em> board members.</p>
<p>In fact &#8212; until he was sidelined by the obvious conflict of interest inherent in wanting to be CEO, while also directing the fate of Yahoo for shareholder value &#8212; Kenny had been deeply involved in a lot of the changes that had taken place of late, after a long period of board inaction.</p>
<p>That included the ouster of CEO Carol Bartz, who was fired for a number of reasons, including lack of strategic vision. It was relatively new board member Kenny &#8212; he became a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110204/exclusive-huffpos-eric-hippeau-stepping-down-from-yahoo-board-as-akamais-david-kenny-steps-in/">director in February</a> &#8212; who led the strategy committee that had asked Bartz for her road map, which she did not deliver to their liking. Obviously.</p>
<p>Because of the swirl around his possible CEO candidacy &#8212; Kenny was a noticeable inside candidate, since he is well known in the Internet advertising world for running and then selling Digitas to the Publicis Groupe for $1.3 billion in 2006 &#8212; he gave up leadership of the committee to Intuit President Brad Smith.</p>
<p>Sources said it is unlikely Kenny will get that top job back, but he remains a member of the transactions committee, which is leading the strategic review of the company.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the key slot for the independent board members of Yahoo, who must ultimately be the ones to determine what path or offer the company will take.  </p>
<p>One plus: Kenny has close relationships with most of the bidders &#8212; largely private equity firms &#8212; looking at Yahoo, and also is well known among the media and tech companies poking around, too. He also has advertising &#8212; and now tech &#8212; experience, which will be much needed as Yahoo explores its options.</p>
<p>Most importantly, Kenny is an independent director, which will be very important to the process going forward, especially since a lot of the spotlight has fallen on Yahoo co-founder and director Jerry Yang.</p>
<p>Yang &#8212; who has been a bit of a Yahoo lightning rod at times &#8212; has been involved in some of the meetings with those interested, along with interim CEO Tim Morse. The company recently noted that this was at the behest of the board.</p>
<p>While these were only informational meetings so far &#8212; and not negotiations, as some reports have surmised &#8212; Yang&#8217;s involvement will likely have to be more curtailed, at least publicly, especially if any of the deals include using his own large stake in Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;This process has to be above board, since it is so easy for those wanting a better deal to try to cause all kinds of trouble,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The company is already under attack in that regard.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a reference to a recent salvo by hedge fund activist Dan Loeb, a major Yahoo shareholder who has taken aim at the board and, last week, at Yang. Loeb <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111104/yahoos-activist-shareholder-loeb-now-targeting-jerry-yang/">essentially accused Yang of double-dealing</a> in the process.</p>
<p>Enter Kenny, along with Smith and &#8212; to an increasingly lesser extent, of late &#8212; Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock. While there are other independent board members involved, these are the three to watch most closely now.</p>
<p>While some think Kenny still would like to be CEO of Yahoo &#8212; he was also on the short list several years ago when Bartz was hired &#8212; sources said he is more likely to take a job at another consumer Internet company.</p>
<p>While he certainly could slot into a large advertising firm or into the digital division of a big media concern, sources said Kenny is looking to be a CEO. </p>
<p>Just not at Yahoo. </p>
<p>At least for now, since down the road it is unclear what will become of Yahoo and who will run it in years to come.</p>
<p>In fact, it might even be Kenny in the end.</p>

<p>As happened last week to its centralized marketing division, Yahoo has broken up its Customer Advocacy organization, with its staff distributed to the various regions and the product unit of the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p>Customer Advocacy has been led by EVP <a href="http://pressroom.yahoo.net/pr/ycorp/jeff-russakow.aspx">Jeff Russakow</a>, whose fate is now similarly unclear as it is for <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111021/exclusive-yahoo-overhauls-marketing-unit-the-internal-memo/">CMO Elisa Steele</a>, whose division was diced up to the regions last week. </p>
<p>Both execs &#8212; who were hired by fired CEO Carol Bartz &#8212; plan to remain at the company until at least January, sources said.</p>
<p>Russakow, according to his Yahoo bio, has had &#8220;global responsibility for all of Yahoo!&#8217;s customer support functions, including audience, small business, ad operations, and search network quality.&#8221; He came to Yahoo from previous jobs at Symantec and Adobe.</p>
<p>Interim CEO Tim Morse sent a memo to employees about the change, noting Russakow is looking for his next opportunity, using much the same language as Steele used in her internal email. </p>
<p>The moves are interesting, given Yahoo&#8217;s current effort to find a new strategy, which includes a possible sale of all or parts of the company. But there is also a strong sentiment within the company to reorganize around strengthening its advertising platform and products.</p>
<p>I have a call into Yahoo PR for comment (but let&#8217;s assume I am accurate about this, shall we?).</p>

<p>Yahoo is drastically rejiggering its marketing division, according to an internal memo sent today to employees from its Chief Marketing Officer <a href="http://pressroom.yahoo.net/pr/ycorp/elisa-steele.aspx">Elisa Steele</a>, in a move that seems to leave her future role unclear.</p>
<p>Steele was brought to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090226/new-yahoo-management-structure-the-entire-memo/">Yahoo over two years ago</a> by now-fired CEO Carol Bartz &#8212; whom she had been very close to &#8212; and charged with turbocharging and reorganizing the unit, which has never been strong. </p>
<p>While Steele certainly did overhaul the marketing department, some of her efforts, such as Yahoo&#8217;s pricey <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090922/live-from-new-york-yahoo-introduces-you/">&#8220;It&#8217;s You&#8221;</a> advertising campaign, have <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100419/yahoo-gets-set-to-unveil-rejiggered-ad-campaign-after-first-one-stumbled/">not worked out</a>. And, largely due to the ongoing turmoil at the company, its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111005/apple-brand-ascendent-while-yahoos-is-dropping-fast/">brand has suffered</a> under her watch. </p>
<p>The changes, which appear to be at the behest of Steele (though you <em>never</em> know at Yahoo!), will shift the major marketing functions back to the regions of the Silicon Valley Internet company from its current global centralized one.</p>
<p>&#8220;I believe we now need to bring marketing decisions, marketing talent and marketing budgets closer to the customer &#8212; and into the regions that depend on these critical plans,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;We need to further link our marketing strategies to revenue growth, sales objectives and overall accountability.&#8221; </p>
<p>Since Steele took over the marketing department at Yahoo several years ago, she has been moving those powers to a more centralized system.</p>
<p>No longer.</p>
<p>In the internal memo, which I obtained and is embedded below, Steele outlines the shift, which will remove a lot of that control of marketing from the HQ and out to its business units. </p>
<p>Steele said in the email to the marketing team that she will remain at the company as CMO for now, although seems to indicate that she is also evaluating her future role.</p>
<p>&#8220;My current role as CMO on CEO staff is unchanged,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;However, whatever I decide to do next for my career is my choice &#8212; and I&#8217;ll think about that on my own timeline.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sounds like an eventual departure to me, with Steele trying hard to stress she was going out on her own motor, even though giving up contro of big parts of your unit is unusual.</p>
<p>In any case, Steele obviously is betting now that on-the-ground control of marketing will help improve things for the beleaguered company. Here&#8217;s the memo:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Team,</p>
<p>It is critical for Yahoo! to grow faster and become more agile. We need to make decisions to accelerate the Regions&#8217; growth plans around the world, and Marketing plays a crucial role in helping develop, support and execute these plans. We&#8217;ve built an integrated marketing machine that is an asset to help the company grow now and into the future. When we assembled a global and centralized organization in 2009, we took the opportunity to create best practices, establish consistency, deepen domain expertise, enhance functional capabilities and innovate for one of the biggest brands in the world. And, in the past 12 months, Global Marketing took home dozens of industry awards for marketing leadership in integrated consumer marketing, digital marketing and event marketing – including the acclaimed Cannes Lions, a Clio, a Webby and IAB Awards. Our Marketing achievements have been broad, deep and well recognized.</p>
<p>Now that we have this strong capability, it is time to leverage it even further. I believe we now need to bring marketing decisions, marketing talent and marketing budgets closer to the customer &#8212; and into the regions that depend on these critical plans. We need to further link our marketing strategies to revenue growth, sales objectives and overall accountability. Therefore, I want to put the marketing programs and tools we&#8217;ve developed right with the Sales and Audience teams responsible for the business outcomes.</p>
<p>It is with this in mind that I recommended a marketing reorganization plan to align to these objectives, accelerate decision-making and simplify roles. The plan centers on decentralizing the current global team into 2 types of specific teams:</p>
<p>1. Regional Marketing: Our regional marketing teams will move to report directly to the Regional leaders in Americas, EMEA and APAC.</p>
<p>2. Corporate Marketing: Our strategic brand, communications and marketing services teams will remain centralized and report into HQ.</p>
<p>This was my proposal to Tim for the best interests of Yahoo! today, and I am glad he agreed with my thinking. I really hope you will endorse and support these changes, too. Yahoo! needs your help and expertise to insure this important next phase is successful.</p>
<p>I want you to know how proud I am of your achievements and contributions. I also want to thank you for the incredible support you have shown me over the past 2.5 years in the current organization. It&#8217;s been an amazing brand adventure and working with each of you has been a great source of satisfaction.</p>
<p>My current role as CMO on CEO staff is unchanged. However, whatever I decide to do next for my career is my choice &#8212; and I&#8217;ll think about that on my own timeline. First, I will work with Tim, my peers and all of you to ensure a smooth transition &#8212; and that is my focus for now.</p>

<p>As expected, the European Commission approved Microsoft&#8217;s $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype late last week.</p>
<p>Next, the deal for the popular Internet communications company &#8212; which had previously been cleared by U.S. regulators &#8212; is likely to officially close later this week (<em>paperwork!</em>), said several sources close to the situation. </p>
<p>Now, of course, comes the hard part &#8212; which is whether Microsoft can successfully integrate the more nimble Skype into the belly of the software beast and allow it to thrive.</p>
<p>Some key questions:</p>
<p>How smoothly can Microsoft integrate Skype into its existing products, such as its unified communications platform, Outlook mail and Hotmail, Office, Messenger and Xbox Live? And, perhaps most of all, Windows Phone devices?</p>
<p>That said, will Skype also get to do what it needs for its own success beyond Microsoft? That includes working with mobile rivals Apple and Google, who now dominate the smartphone market, as well as many others. It has already managed to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110821/skype-buys-groupme-for-text-based-chatting-services/">buy GroupMe</a> group messaging start-up for $85 million, just months after its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110509/microsoft-will-announce-acquistion-of-skype-tomorrow-morning/">own acquisition in May</a>.</p>
<p>And can the division &#8212; which will be led by Tony Bates, Skype&#8217;s CEO and now a Microsoft president &#8212; operate successfully located mostly away from the power center of Redmond, Wash.? Skype has a substantial office in Silicon Valley, as well as key engineering units in Estonia and Stockholm. </p>
<p>In that vein, will Microsoft be able to hold on to new talent like Bates and Skype&#8217;s geek squad, all of whom have substantial choices elsewhere? Like a lot of large tech companies, Microsoft is not known for being able to hold on to those who come in from the outside, in large part due to its insular culture of longtime execs.</p>
<p>In other words, how big a welcome will Microsoft&#8217;s other powerful presidents &#8212; such as Windows division head Steven Sinofsky &#8212; give Bates and company?</p>

<p>The Hewlett-Packard board will meet as a whole today, after all kinds of committee confabs yesterday, in what sources describe as an intense debate over the fate of its current CEO, Léo Apotheker.</p>
<p>You know, the Léo who is now painfully twisting in the wind, after <strong>AllThingsD</strong> and Bloomberg broke the news that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/former-ebay-ceo-meg-whitman-being-considered-for-hp-ceo-job-to-replace-apotheker/">he might be ousted</a> after only 11 months on the job, and replaced &#8212; at least for now &#8212; by director and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman.</p>
<p>If appointed, even without many critical credentials in the enterprise business, Whitman would be HP&#8217;s seventh CEO since 1999. That&#8217;s more corporate marriages and exec beheadings than England&#8217;s Henry VIII!</p>
<p>The possibility of one more, including other internal and external candidates, sent long-suffering <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/hp-shares-soar-on-apotheker-ouster-possibility-by-board/">HP shares soaring yesterday</a>, and the stock was still up almost seven percent in after-hours trading.</p>
<p>That Wall Street glee is surely to come crashing down and very soon today, if the current crisis at the Silicon Valley tech giant &#8212; which has stumbled from one to the next over the last few years &#8212; is not quickly and definitively resolved by the board.</p>
<p>That means, of course, the likely firing of Apotheker, whose tenure has been rocky, articulating a strategy that the company actually plans to stick to and getting a new leader into place.</p>
<p>Translation: Don&#8217;t pull a Yahoo board here and drag out the situation to the most excruciating level possible.</p>
<p>Beyond the moribund stock and pissed-off shareholders, the uncertainty will be wearing on employee morale, including HP&#8217;s top execs.</p>
<p>According to sources close to the situation, leaders of HP&#8217;s many huge divisions had no idea that Apotheker&#8217;s head was on the block &#8212; although many I spoke to said they had hoped for a while that it would be.</p>
<p>&#8220;Leo is a very nice guy, but he has been an ineffective leader for HP at a very important time, with all that has been changing in the tech industry and the pressure from our competitors,&#8221; said one person at the company.</p>
<p>Said another, &#8220;[Apotheker will] get the blame, but this board needs to get a plan into place we can all follow, and then march this giant army in some direction, because all these shifts have been disheartening.&#8221;</p>
<p>I would imagine so.</p>
<p>Still, said sources, the board might not resolve the problem until later today, or Friday, even. </p>
<p>&#8220;The board really can&#8217;t look like it is making rash decisions,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;And it cannot be hurtling from one mess to another and making an even bigger one in the process.&#8221;</p>
<p>That, given the many troubles at HP in recent years &#8212; from ever-shifting strategies to disappointing forecasts &#8212; is what you might call an understatement.</p>

<p>Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is being considered by Hewlett-Packard directors as a possible candidate for CEO, in a move that would replace its current leader Léo Apotheker, according to several sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The appointment of Whitman &#8212; a longtime and experienced Silicon Valley exec, who joined the board of Hewlett-Packard in January &#8212; to the top job at HP is by no means a done deal, sources said.</p>
<p>But a significant contingent on the board is keen to remove Apotheker after what some directors consider a series of management mishaps.</p>
<p>If it occurs, it would be the second major CEO ouster in a short time &#8212; Yahoo <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110916/what-was-behind-the-timing-of-yahoo-ceo-carol-bartzs-abrupt-ouster/">recently fired its CEO Carol Bartz due to lackluster performance</a>.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE:</strong> Wall Street seems to like the Apotheker-gone idea, with HP shares spiking almost eight percent on our news, as well as a simultaneous <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-09-21/hp-s-board-is-said-to-weigh-ousting-apotheker-after-less-than-year-as-ceo.html">Bloomberg report</a>. The rise has added almost $3 billion to HP's market valuation.]</p>
<p>In addition, sources said Whitman has been contemplating taking another big exec job, after a 10-year stint at eBay, which was followed by an unsuccessful run as the Republican nominee for governor of California last year. Since then, she has been a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110329/meg-whitman-joins-kleiner-perkins-to-try-hand-at-advising-start-ups/">part-time consultant</a> at top venture firm Kleiner Perkins.</p>
<p>Her role there &#8212; which has largely been seen as a temporary one &#8212; has included acting as a strategic adviser to start-ups and evaluating investment opportunities.</p>
<p>Sources said Whitman &#8212; who has also been active with her family foundation &#8212; has shown some interest in talking about taking the HP job. </p>
<p>Turning to Whitman would not be a surprise, given there are few execs in tech experienced enough to run such a large and complex organization as HP. </p>
<p>Still, her expertise has mostly been in the consumer space and she has never run what is largely a hardware company and one with major enterprise clients.</p>
<p>So, if appointed, Whitman would need a lot of help, especially to fix one with as many troubles as HP has seen of late. </p>
<p>That is why the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/hp-board-meets-after-palm-turmoil-so-whats-the-next-shoe-to-drop/">board has been meeting by phone and in person</a> this week to talk about a range of issues, focused in part on how to spin the company out of its current cycle of bad news and what to do about the situation.</p>
<p>Its most recent spate of trouble was the announcement of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110919/layoffs-at-hps-palm-division/">layoffs of hundreds of employees in its Palm division</a>.</p>
<p>This inevitable move to jettison Palm employees came after HP&#8217;s sudden news in August that it was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110818/breaking-hp-makes-big-shift-on-webos-exiting-hardware-business/">shuttering its webOS hardware business</a>.</p>
<p>Add to that a proposed class action lawsuit, filed Sept. 13 in the U.S. District Court for Central California, along with another handful of law firms that are launching their own investigations of HP over the move.</p>
<p>In the suit, according to a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110916/the-number-of-securities-lawyers-circling-hp-is-growing/">report by Arik Hesseldahl</a>, an &#8220;HP shareholder named Richard Gammel alleged that comments by CEO Léo Apotheker &#8212; concerning the company&#8217;s earnings expectations, the importance of its personal computer business and plans to move ahead with devices running the webOS operating system &#8212; gave a vastly different indication of actions HP took on Aug. 18, when it killed the webOS hardware business and announced plans to spin off the PC business and spend $10 billion to acquire Autonomy.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, lots to discuss for HP&#8217;s directors, who have been under siege, essentially, ever since the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100806/hp-ceo-resigns/">former CEO Mark Hurd</a> resigned under pressure more than a year ago over a variety of allegations about expense reports related to a sexual harassment inquiry. The board found no evidence to support the sexual harassment claim. </p>
<p>In the wake of that scandal, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100930/hp-names-new-ceo-leo-apotheker/">HP appointed Apotheker to take over for Hurd</a>.</p>
<p>It has been a bumpy ride, as HP&#8217;s stock has plummeted almost 43 percent in a year&#8217;s time. By comparison, rival Oracle&#8217;s shares are up more than three percent in the same period, and Apple stock has risen more than 50 percent.</p>
<p>That share decline, given a series of major moves and just as many gaffes, has put Apotheker &#8212; who has been trying to reposition HP largely as an enterprise company &#8212; in the hot seat.</p>
<p>An HP spokeswoman declined to comment. I have several calls in to reach Whitman and have not yet heard back.</p>

<p>After our grand tour of Asia last week &#8212; with stops in <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110803/asiad-adventures-walt-and-kara-in-seoul-video/">Korea</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110806/asiad-adventures-japan-edition-walt-and-kara-visit-digital-tokyo-video/">Japan</a> &#8212; it seems like a perfect time to update the speaker list for our upcoming <a href="http://allthingsd.com/conferences/asiad/about/"><strong>AsiaD</strong></a> conference in Hong Kong in October.</p>
<p>As Walt Mossberg and I said, we are trying to mix both U.S.-based speakers with a pan-Asian selection of speakers from across the region, and the new additions are just that.</p>

In that role, the dynamic exec is at the nexus of the Japanese company&#8217;s efforts around tablets, smartphones, gaming and more. As Sony struggles to reassert its dominance over the arena, Hirai will be a key player in that effort.</p>

<p><strong>Bradley Horowitz</strong> &#8212; as head of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110705/google-exec-is-now-really-plus-one/">product management for Google+</a>, the search giant&#8217;s aggressive effort to break Facebook&#8217;s hammerlock on social networking &#8212; has a perfect perspective to talk about the fast-growing area and where it is going globally. With locally-based social companies springing up all over Asia, can Google establish one the whole world will use? It&#8217;s an important question and Horowitz&#8217;s job No. 1.</p>

But he&#8217;s also been increasingly active in media investing in Asia of late, and has a lot to say about the global nature of entertainment in the digital age.</p>

Roese will also talk about the phenomenon of a Chinese-owned company emerging on the world technology stage.</p>
<p>Even in the midst of an economic downturn, there is no denying that it has been a golden time for Silicon Valley start-ups, which have enjoyed unprecedented growth and funding in the Web 2.0 era. How Airbnb can take the company to the next level, including across the world, while dealing with the kinds of challenges the small management team has to face, will be an interesting topic for discussion.</p>

She&#8217;ll talk about how the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110801/premium-video-commerce-site-joyus-headed-by-top-ex-googler-gets-7-9-million-in-funding/">recently funded Joyus</a>, a new premium video commerce site trying to pioneer a new way to shop online, plans to expand globally.</p>

With stints as founder of music site Launch Media, which was bought by Yahoo, and as an Entrepreneur in Residence with Benchmark Capital, he is the perfect person to explain what it&#8217;s like being an entrepreneur today in Silicon Valley.</p>

<p>Microsoft has a lot to crow about in its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110721/microsoft-beats-earnings-expectations/">fourth-quarter earnings</a> today, including a 30 percent jump in profits and strong overall revenue growth in its many divisions.</p>
<p>It is sure a lot better than what <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/not-so-chart-tastic-picture-of-yahoos-2q-display-disaster/">Yahoo</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110721/nokias-borked-q2-charts-make-yahoos-borked-q2-charts-look-fantastic/">Nokia</a> turned in this week in their quarterly results.</p>

<p>With only a week to go before the ninth <a href="http://allthingsd.com/category/d/d9/"><strong>D: All Things Digital</strong></a> conference debuts in California, we&#8217;re announcing the addition of Microsoft&#8217;s <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/ssinofsky/">Steven Sinofsky</a> to an already heavy-duty line-up of speakers.</p>
<p>One of the five Microsoft presidents&#8211;it&#8217;s kind of like the kingdoms in HBO&#8217;s &#8220;Game of Thrones,&#8221; but without big, clangy swords&#8211;he runs the flagship Windows and Windows Live division.</p>
<p>More importantly, Sinofsky is the guy who overhauled Office and then led the team that bailed Microsoft out of the Vista debacle.</p>
<p>The longtime company veteran&#8211;who joined Microsoft in 1989 as a software design engineer&#8211;will talk about the future of Windows in the era of all kinds of new devices and the cloud.</p>
<p>If you want to get some insight into his thinking, Sinofsky also wrote a book about the making of Windows 7&#8211;titled <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Strategy-Organization-Planning-Decision/dp/0470560452/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1306092533&#038;sr=8-1">&#8220;One Strategy: Organization, Planning, and Decision Making&#8221;</a>&#8211;that&#8217;s a very compelling read well beyond management wonk types.</p>
<p>We expect Sinofsky to be just as interesting onstage at <strong>D9</strong> too, along with other top tech and media speakers including Google&#8217;s Eric Schmidt, Bob Iger of Disney, Silicon Valley legend Marc Andreessen, Netflix&#8217;s Reed Hastings and more. </p>

<p>After he was appointed the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110209/bing-overlord-satya-nadella-promoted-to-president-of-server-and-tools-at-microsoft/">new president of Microsoft&#8217;s important Server and Tools Division</a> from his top engineering post at its come-from-behind Bing search unit, Satya Nadella now finds himself a leader of a business that also needs to keep catching up.</p>
<p>In a wide-ranging interview with BoomTown yesterday, Nadella talked about both his four-year stint at Bing and how he looked forward to the challenges of his new job.</p>
<p>Nadella got the nod, he said, after CEO Steve Ballmer went through a process of what was Microsoft&#8217;s &#8220;position in this business and a certain set [of ideas] about who should come in next.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, almost 20 years earlier, after working at Sun Microsystems, Nadella had started in the same area of Microsoft he will now lead.</p>
<p>Quoting the famous T.S. Eliot lines&#8211;&#8221;We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time&#8221;&#8211;Nadella was an evangelist for Windows NT.</p>
<p>Eventually, his career brought him to the search arena, most recently to the most aggressive and expensive effort yet by Microsoft with Bing to try to eat into the massive and lucrative lead of Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those were fairly dark days for us,&#8221; noted Nadella, pointing out that any market share gains by Microsoft seemed impossible.</p>
<p>But, according to numerous surveys, it has been only uphill for Bing, especially after it started to really spend and also inked its search and online advertising deal with Yahoo, a partnership that Nadella was a key player in striking.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have, depending on which one you look at, grown five share points,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But behind that, I am most proud of launching a brand and a product that is delivering.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of the recent controversy in which Google accused Bing of lifting its results, Nadella borrows another quote, this time from Gandhi.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8216;First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win,&#8217;&#8221; he said, noting Bing has always said it uses toolbar and other public user data. &#8220;The real debate is whether we are better.&#8221;</p>
<p>In any case, as Nadella sees it, the Bing experience has helped him prepare for his new job, noting he was in charge of building a 200,000-machine grid to serve the various online services at Microsoft.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have been CIO of a cloud platform where there are only two of that size,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, I know what it is like to be a customer of those services.&#8221;</p>
<p>His hope for his next job, he said, is to make it the next-generation cloud platform, while also serving the needs of current customers with its current product.</p>
<p>&#8216;We have a product and brand that are really foundational, but there is a threshold to it,&#8221; Nadella said. &#8220;We have to serve the needs of our existing customers, while also moving them to the cloud and building a next-generation offering.&#8221;</p>
<p>At Bing, he said, &#8220;every day is upside, since we came from so far behind, whereas in server and tools, we are the leader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Big competitors are different and the same too, when it comes to the cloud.</p>
<p>&#8220;Amazon has done a good job, but not in the same game as us,&#8221; said Nadella, ticking off Google, Oracle and VMware as rivals in different ways too. &#8220;It&#8217;s a nascent marketplace.&#8221;</p>
<p>Acquisitions, he said, will also be important. &#8220;We are always looking at what opportunities there are,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>His overall view?</p>
<p>&#8220;I think that the challenge is how to operate in a space where we have a $15-plus-billion-dollar business and we know the paradigm is shifting and managing that shift where we are the disruptors and also the leaders at the same time.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, between a rock and a hard place, a place Nadella knows well from Bing.</p>
<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t be stuck in current paradigm,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And we can&#8217;t shoot too far ahead of ourselves either.&#8221;</p>
<p>To get a good sense of his style as he moves from consumers to enterprise, here&#8217;s a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090804/microsofts-point-man-on-search-satya-nadella-speaks-its-a-game-of-scale/">video interview I did with Nadella back in mid-2009</a>, just after the Microsoft search deal, and another I did this past summer at one of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100714/microsoft-satya-nadella-bing-a-year-later">his regular search updates for the media</a>.</p>

<p>In fact, the only place to really find the Palm brand these days is at <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/">the Palm.com domain</a>, which, while festooned with HP branding, still includes &#8220;Palm USA&#8221; in its page titles. Evidently this is what HP meant when it said the Palm brand would &#8220;move into the background.&#8221;</p>
<p>Judging from Wednesday&#8217;s event, the storied Palm brand isn&#8217;t even a sub-brand of HP. It&#8217;s just a handle for a particular division of the company, though HP insists it&#8217;s keeping it around.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our future strategy is to continue to build the HP brand in the marketplace,&#8221; a company spokesman told me. &#8220;Palm is a great brand that is synonymous with mobile innovation and we are delighted to have it in our portfolio of brands allowing us future options.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a nice enough thought, though it&#8217;s hard to see HP ever reviving the Palm brand in the future&#8211;not after it&#8217;s rebranded the company&#8217;s products as its own and announced plans to use them to build &#8220;the largest installed base of connected users in the world.&#8221; If it succeeds at that, will Palm really be a future branding option? Doubtful.</p>
<p>In that sense, Wednesday&#8217;s event wasn&#8217;t just a showcase for some slick new webOS hardware, but a eulogy to the pioneering company that made it possible, the company that created the market for handheld devices and shaped that first early vision of mobile computing&#8230;.</p>
<p>Eh, Oldsmobile was a great brand too, I suppose.</p>

On Wednesday, he&#8217;ll have his first chance to begin retelling it when HP&#8217;s Palm division holds <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110104/hp-to-hold-webos-event-on-feb-9/">an invitation-only event in San Francisco,</a> at which <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110114/webos-tablet/">it&#8217;s expected to introduce its long-rumored webOS tablet</a>. This will be our first look at HP&#8217;s new  ecosystem&#8211;smartphones, connected devices, apps and the OS that ties them all together&#8211;and likely be the beginning of a slow untethering from Microsoft&#8217;s Windows OS. And if Palm has done it right, webOS could finally become a viable challenger to iOS and Android&#8211;particularly the latter, which has had a mixed reception in the tablet market. But that means coming to market with not just a compelling tablet OS and hardware, but a burgeoning applications and content ecosystem&#8211;something not easily achieved. As J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz wrote today, the ubiquity of HP’s related app ecosystem is uncertain. Whatever hardware the company rolls out on Wednesday needs to spur developers to embrace webOS. &#8220;Otherwise,&#8221; said Moskowitz, &#8220;there is risk that HP introduces a suitable device with a strong operating system, only to be deficient in attracting end users’ &#8216;eyeballs&#8217; because of a weak applications and content ecosystem.&#8221;</p>
<p>The caveat here is that HP&#8217;s new tablet (or tablets) presents developers with an enormous opportunity <em>precisely because its app ecosystem is uncertain</em>. It&#8217;s going to be a lot easier to score a hit there than it is in Apple&#8217;s App Store, where developers must compete for users&#8217; attention with hundreds of thousands of apps. And if you do score a hit there, it might even set the stage for you to translate that success to larger mobile platforms that are generally tougher to break into.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/telford.jpg" alt="" title="telford" width="200" height="253" class="alignright size-full wp-image-2178" />It wasn’t so long ago that the primary appeal of cloud computing was cost-savings. Companies struggling to slash their operational costs moved their data and applications out of their own back offices and handed them off to cloud providers. Now the question about the cloud is turning in a new direction. CIOs who last year asked, “How much can I save?” are now asking, “What more can I do with it?”</p>
<p>Often they’ll turn to public cloud providers like Amazon or Google or Microsoft. Those are the three names that usually get mentioned in the same breath whenever enterprise cloud services come up. But what about IT giant IBM? It turns out it’s a significant player in the cloud game, offering both public and private cloud services. Last week I sat down with Ric Telford, IBM’s VP of Cloud Services to talk about how Big Blue’s cloud business is going and what its priorities are in the year just started.</p>
<p><strong>NewEnterprise: Ric, let’s start at the top. Tell me how IBM sees the cloud business right now?</strong></p>
<p>Telford: Initially the cloud is all about doing more with less. Suddenly you could deliver the same IT services for less. Fast-forward to today, and it’s not all about saving money. People are realizing they can do things they never could before with the cloud. I was recently met with a small aircraft engineering company, and the guy running it described how he competes with much larger companies for defense contracts. It used to be that doing all the modeling and simulations he needed required buying hardware and software and running it all on premise. Now he can go out to the cloud, pay for what he uses and be done with it. He can now compete for contracts he wouldn’t have been able to go after before. And we’re seeing a lot of examples like that in industry after industry.</p>
<p><strong>Someone said to me the other day that the cloud is going to have to have <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110118/accels-ping-li-compares-the-cloud-to-the-mainframe/">all the parts of the mainframe</a>. Do you agree with that?</strong></p>
<p>There’s a lot of parallels between the cloud and the mainframe. IBM’s view is that we have a single-reference architecture. It’s the same whether we’re delivering the service or if we build it for you. We did a deal recently with France Telecom where they are going to be a cloud services provider to their clients. They already have the network connections. But they’re not a cloud company. So they’re using IBM’s cloud architecture to give them all the pieces in one easy-to-consume bite. So we have that architecture and we use the same blueprint in all the various permutations of the cloud. For some people it’s confusing, but for us it’s all the same whether you want to have it inside your firewall or outside.</p>
<p><strong><br />
Which do your customers tend to prefer&#8211;a private cloud or a public cloud?</strong></p>
<p>We do surveys every year and right now we’re seeing about a two-to-one preference for private versus public. About 60 to 70 percent of respondents say they’re working on a private cloud, and about 30 to 40 say they’re working on the public cloud. To us it’s all the same. We offer a core set of services from the IBM cloud&#8211;development, test, compute, storage, collaborations, desktop. But we can also build the same thing inside your firewall.</p>
<p><strong>How big is your public cloud business?</strong></p>
<p>I can’t give you a revenue figure because different business units take advantage of it to deliver different things. We just opened up a delivery center in Research Triangle Park. It’s probably one of the most advanced data centers in the world. And now we’re rolling out a model that we are cloning around the world. We just opened one in Germany and another in Canada. And then we’ll just keep adding them. We manage about eight million square feet of data centers around the world.</p>
<p><strong>How does a company typically get started with the cloud?</strong></p>
<p>Usually I suggest they start with their develop-and-test operations. It’s usually not mission-critical, and there’s usually a lot of hardware that’s not being used. Usually that&#8217;s the group that buys hardware long before it&#8217;s needed and it ends up sitting idle 90 percent of the time. At IBM we put our whole research division on the cloud because they were the worst hardware hoarders, putting servers under desks and whatnot. They knew that if they needed a new server it would take weeks to get it. Now they go out to the research and compute cloud, and the services they need are usually ready to use in minutes or at most an hour. It just makes a huge difference in people’s ability to get going.</p>
<p><strong>So what you are your priorities for this year?</strong></p>
<p>One of the big things we started seeing last year was an uptake of cloud delivery in industry-specific ways. We’re working not just on the generic things like email and collaboration, but on the specific applications that are used in various industries. Health care, banking and government are a few that have complicated regulatory needs that vary state by state and country by country, and we have the deep understanding required to work with them. We also built a private cloud to help the 29 countries involved in NATO share data on logistics and troop deployments. We also have an initiative with the consumer electronics industry. Utilities is another, and it gets tied in with our Smarter Planet initiatives.</p>
<p><strong>Will IBM be making deals in the cloud this year?</strong></p>
<p>IBM will make a few billion in acquisitions. Cloud is one of the four key growth areas we’re focused on. The others are Smarter Planet, analytics and the growth markets. We’ve said that in those four growth initiatives we&#8217;re going for $20 billion in additional revenue by 2014. Four initiatives, five years and $20 billion dollars. That’s certainly not all going to happen organically.</p>

<p>It matters a great deal to the unfortunate employees at Yahoo who are being laid off this week for the reporting on the subject to be accurate and to entail some serious effort.</p>
<p>(It&#8217;s bad enough to lose a well-paying job in this still-tough economy, but to lose one over the holidays requires quite a lot more than incorrectly quoting a tweet off Twitter without checking first.)</p>
<p>And so here&#8217;s the deal, as BoomTown has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101111/adding-insult-to-injury-yahoo-is-prepping-layoffs-but-limited-to-product-group-and-more-like-10-percent">previously reported</a>, about what&#8217;s happening with Yahoo layoffs, set for tomorrow morning:</p>
<p>Yahoo will lay off about 650 to 700 employees.</p>
<p>Those layoffs will come largely from its product division, headed by Blake Irving, although there could be firings in other parts of Yahoo.</p>
<p>The layoffs are mostly in the U.S. units of Yahoo.</p>
<p>Those let go will be notified tomorrow and will likely have to leave Yahoo facilities immediately. Company sources said the action will be completed by early afternoon, Pacific time.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s definitely bad timing for Yahoo, given it is less than two weeks until Christmas, but cost-cutting at the company seems unavoidable as it seeks to improve revenue and spur growth.</p>
<p>Still, it is another sad day in Sunnyvale, Calif., where the iconic Internet giant is headquartered.</p>

<p>CBS confirmed the move after BoomTown made inquiries recently, after hearing of various executives who had been contacted by the media giant about the position.</p>
<p>“Neil has helped make CBSi into the successful and profitable business it is today. Looking out into 2011, we are working on a relaxed timeframe to name a successor to his post, as he embarks on his next great thing,&#8221; said a spokesman.</p>
<p>It is not clear where Ashe is headed, nor who his replacement will be.</p>
<p>But an exec close to the situation said that Zander Lurie, who has worked closely with Ashe at CNET and CBS, will take on a bigger role.</p>
<p>Lurie is currently SVP of strategic development at CBS.</p>
<p>Several years ago, CBS bought CNET, where Ashe was CEO.</p>
<p>He had been at CNET since 2002, and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/exclusive-cbs-digital-ceo-smith-to-leave-to-start-a-silicon-valley-advisory-firm-first-customer-cbs/">replaced Quincy Smith</a> as the interactive division&#8217;s head.</p>

<p>As part of the deal, said the companies:</p>
<p>* IGN will be creating branded media advertising products on GameStop.com, and will be its sales representative online. Consumer advertisers will be able to buy branded ads on the retail site.</p>
<p>* IGN content will appear on GameStop.com, with all kinds of cross-linking, and there will be copious buttons for e-commerce on IGN.com.</p>
<p>* GameStop will be buying its ads on IGN.com.</p>

<p>IGN, which is profitable, has been pushing hard to grow its branded advertising recently, as well as its traffic.</p>
<p>And, over the summer, it introduced IGN Social, adding social elements, such as gamers talking with each other, to its content offerings.</p>

His last day is Jan. 28, 2011, though he&#8217;s been retained as a consultant for the remainder of the year.</p>
<p>So why is Garriques, whom Dell recruited from Motorola in 2007 and subsequently tapped to run the company&#8217;s communications products division, leaving? Evidently that division&#8217;s being shuttered and rolled into other units. Seems new devices like the Streak&#8211;Dell&#8217;s Android tablet&#8211;and smartphones like the Aero and Venue Pro aren&#8217;t quite performing the way Dell had hoped. Said Dell spokesman David Frink, &#8220;He made a decision to look at other opportunities as we integrate the former communications solutions group into our core operating structure.&#8221;</p>
<p>Garriques leaves Dell with a $1.44 million severance payment and a promise of $6.3 million for future consulting services.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s not exactly on the menu for a new mobile application being launched by the iconic adult-oriented media company today, called Scout (although BoomTown wishes it were).</p>
<p>Powered by Xtify&#8217;s geolocation push notification technology, Scout will be available first in New York and Los Angeles, and initially only on smartphones using Google&#8217;s Android mobile operating system.</p>
<p>Users of the Scout app get exclusive nightlife-oriented offers and information about events, clubs and bars aggregated by Playboy&#8217;s editors. And when users are near any of these venues, they get push notifications alerting them.</p>
<p>In a statement, Paul Lee, Playboy&#8217;s recently installed head of new digital ventures, noted the move was to leverage the famous Playboy brand.</p>
<p>&#8220;Scout is a first step in Playboy&#8217;s strategy of utilizing new digital platforms to extend our brand in the nightlife arena and to build new revenue streams for the company,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Playboy could use any help it can get right about now. Yesterday, the company reported a wider loss than expected, due to increasing weakness in its television and publishing divisions, even as it tries to grow via the licensing of assets such as its well-known bunny logo.</p>
<p>Presumably, using that brand to combine relevant content and location-triggered push notifications is yet another attempt to right itself.</p>

<p>Sonos, maker of the well-known wireless multi-room music system for the home, announced at a press conference in Beijing, China, today that it will soon be selling its products in the important Asian market.</p>
<p>The move by the Santa Barbara, Calif., consumer electronics company is a big expansion, putting its players in the hands of a growing base of more affluent Chinese customers by later this month.</p>
<p>&#8220;The consumer market is really developing and the Chinese customer wants the best products for music delivery,&#8221; said Sonos CEO John MacFarlane in an interview with BoomTown earlier this week. &#8220;We have had a fair amount of growth outside the U.S. and we expect it to only continue.&#8221;</p>
<p>MacFarlane said all Sonos products, which make a lot of use of Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad devices as controllers, will be localized in China.</p>
<p>The company said Sonos China will be headquartered in the southern China city of Shenzhen. The new managing director of the Chinese division will be Yaling Zhang, who previously served as managing director of Archos China.</p>

<p>After Disney named two longtime Internet execs&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">Playdom&#8217;s John Pleasants and Jimmy Pitaro of Yahoo</a>&#8211;as co-presidents of its Internet unit, BoomTown did a longer interview with CEO Bob Iger about the entertainment giant&#8217;s next Web moves.</p>
<p>I always enjoy talking digital with Iger&#8211;who is pictured above in an interview I did with him in 2006 at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;since he has been one of the old media moguls who seems unafraid of the challenges of new media.</p>
<p>While appropriately wary, Iger acted early and often in exploring digital initiatives at Disney (DIS) that others in Hollywood&#8217;s and New York&#8217;s media worlds were loath to consider.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have tried to keep two obvious philosophies,&#8221; Iger said in a phone interview yesterday. &#8220;First, that our current business not get in the way of adopting new technologies, and, second, that our business belongs on these new platforms.&#8221;</p>
<p>Easy to say, of course, but it&#8217;s still nice to hear, given the longtime, incessant and ultimately wearying push-and-pull between those who make bucks making content and those who make bucks making technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;My premise is that technology is about an opportunity for us,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And we cannot will it away and should not&#8230;because you can&#8217;t stop these things from happening.&#8221;</p>

<p>With an assist by recent Disney board member and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Pitaro came to his attention earlier this year, Iger said.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt">Pitaro left his job as SVP of Media at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) last week.</p>
<p>And Pleasants was CEO of Playdom, the online social gaming company that Disney <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100727/disney-purchases-playdom">acquired for $763 million</a> in late July.</p>
<p>The pair, who will report directly to Iger as co-chiefs of the Disney Interactive Media Group, replace outgoing head Steve Wadsworth.</p>
<p>The shift is a big move by the entertainment giant and yet another attempt to clarify and bolster its Web strategy, which has had a long and often rocky history.</p>
<p>Under the previous regime of former CEO Michael Eisner, for example, Disney bought search engine Infoseek and tried to create a portal called Go.com.</p>
<p>That failed, and was one of many efforts to define the media company&#8217;s Web goals.</p>
<p>More recently, in 2008, Disney gathered most of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080604/disney-combines-digital-units-heres-the-iger-memo/">Internet properties within DIMG</a> under Wadsworth.</p>
<p>Still, money-making has not been part of the mix. In its most recent quarter, DIMG lost $65 million on revenue of $197 million.</p>

<p>In the interview about the new structure, Iger said: &#8220;I think we&#8217;ve built a framework of assets, and now is the time to create a structure in a more focused way. In splitting the divisions, we can focus more on them better and in a way they deserve.&#8221;</p>
<p>He outlined the new set-up, which will have Pleasants focus on the online gaming and mobile landscape and Pitaro on the Web arena.</p>
<p>Iger said he felt Pleasants and Pitaro brought different backgrounds to the task, as well as longtime experience in the Internet arena.</p>
<p>He said that upon considering a fresh approach, he felt that Wadsworth was &#8220;spread too thin,&#8221; given all the various online arenas for Disney.</p>
<p>In fact, today, Disney owns a number of big Internet properties, including Disney.com, Family.com and Club Penguin, although there does not seem to be a particularly cohesive strategy among them.</p>
<p>Of course, that&#8217;s no surprise, given it is all part of a multifaceted media company with a variety of businesses.</p>
<p>Due to its powerful content assets, said Iger, it might be a perfect time for a more cogent plan. With the explosion of devices, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad and others, the importance of cooperation between content and technology is more critical than ever.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think a lot of technology companies are really finally ready to handle more premium content in a way that is beneficial to all of us,&#8221; said Iger.</p>

<p>&#8220;If we wanted to get significant in size, we need the investment to be greater,&#8221; Iger said about the big payout to get into the fast-growing social gaming arena.</p>
<p>And that has meant less emphasis on console games, on which he said Disney had focused too much in the past.</p>
<p>No longer&#8211;now Iger said he has planted Playdom, as well as its purchase of the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100701/reports-disney-buys-iphone-game-startup-tapulous">Tapulous music app start-up</a>, in a spanking new facility in Palo Alto, Calif., right in the heart of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>&#8220;We need to be part of the culture and world there in a significant way,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And I believe I have convinced the senior team within Disney that Playdom is a huge opportunity for them.&#8221;</p>
<p>That includes online gaming related to units such as sports at ESPN, as well as other Disney brands, such as the theme parks or Marvel, into Playdom games.</p>
<p>While Pleasants will run his part of the show from Silicon Valley, Iger said, Pitaro will work out of Los Angeles on Web initiatives and in upgrading the Disney online experience.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to make Disney sites more of a community and entertainment center than a marketing hub,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;Where is gets complicated is the levels of exclusivity and the other places we want to distribute our content.&#8221;</p>

<p>And that means a multifaceted approach to all kinds of payment models for Disney online, from subscription to advertising-supported to pay-per-view.</p>
<p>&#8220;In certain areas, we will be very aggressive with our content and in others less aggressive, to the extent that each offers us revenues,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;Obviously, where there is potential cannibalization, we will be a little more careful&#8230;but we are going to push forward.&#8221;</p>
<p>When asked about the most obvious management issue&#8211;the possibility of clashing with two heads of one division (<em>MySpace, anyone?</em>), Iger said that while there was overlap, he thought the jobs Pitaro and Pleasants had to do were also wide-ranging and different enough.</p>
<p>Plus, added Iger, &#8220;They both report directly to me and I am there to see to it that it works.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, as Disney continues to move forward into the digital future, the content and technology buck stops, as it should, at Iger.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In April, Cisco unveiled a wide-ranging collaboration with Aliph&#8211;a San Francisco start-up that is famous for the noise-canceling Jawbone Bluetooth mobile headset&#8211;to put its software and device in Cisco&#8217;s IP phones in the enterprise.</p>
<p>It launches today.</p>
<p>The Cisco (CSCO) deployment is a big win for Aliph, since the networking giant is a dominant player in the arena to provide telephony solutions to businesses, part of its <a href="http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/index.html">Voice and Unified Communications</a> division.</p>
<p>The idea is to use the Jawbone device and the software that manages it to allow workers to move around an office and have the call move with them, echoing increasingly mobile consumer behavior. That will even include jumping from office phones to mobile devices.</p>
<p>To do this, Cisco will be using Aliph&#8217;s technology, which the start-up is calling a &#8220;wearable platform.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company was formally launched in 2004&#8211;in fact, at the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;by Alexander Asseily and Hosain Rahman, who met as Stanford University undergraduates.</p>
<p>It is funded by Silicon Valley venture powerhouses Khosla Ventures and Sequoia Capital, as well as smaller investors, who put in a total of $43 million.</p>
<p>With the stylish and innovative Jawbone, Aliph has turned a lot of heads in the wireless headset space, aimed directly at high-end consumers.</p>
<p>It is prominently featured, for example, in Apple (AAPL) retail stores.</p>
<p>Now, it is finally in the workplace.</p>

<p>Shipments of the Jawbone ICON for Cisco Bluetooth Headsets have begun in the U.S. and Canada, bundled with Cisco Unified IP Phones 9951 and 9971. International shipments will begin in October 2010.</p>

<p>•	Users no longer need to remain tethered to their desks; their audio and voice follow them wherever they go, leaving their hands free for other tasks.<br />

•	Jawbone ICON for Cisco delivers built-in intelligence that allows the headset to be dynamically enhanced through new software applications and functional updates via the Jawbone MyTALK platform.<br />
•	As rich new features and functionality are available, the headset can be easily updated either by the IT manager or user themselves.</p>
