		<title>Why Is the Washington Post at the Top of My Facebook Feed Yet Again?</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It seems every time I&#8217;ve visited Facebook in recent weeks, I&#8217;m greeted front and center with a box of stories that my friends have read on the Washington Post. Occasionally, they&#8217;re articles I&#8217;m interested in, but often they&#8217;re things I&#8217;ve already seen &#8212; or just the latest Kardashian development.</p>
<p>I know my friends are sharing more interesting things about their own lives on Facebook, but these dang stories are almost always at the very top.</p>
<p>After uninstalling and hiding the app failed to stop this from happening, I asked Facebook and the Washington Post what was going on, and how I could make it stop.</p>

<p>They said the box I&#8217;m seeing is an aggregated list of activity from news apps, with the new &#8220;frictionless&#8221; Open Graph that shows every single story my participating friends read.</p>
<p>Because Facebook has rolled out to only a few news apps, and the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=225771117449558">Washington Post Social Reader</a> seems to be by far the most popular with my friends, Facebook&#8217;s algorithm keeps determining that it&#8217;s very relevant to me.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/Facebooknews.png"><img class="alignleft size-large wp-image-143632" title="Facebooknews" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/Facebooknews-640x173.png" alt="" width="512" height="138" /></a>The Facebook newsfeed allows users to hide all updates from a single app, but at least for now there&#8217;s no way to hide all updates from the aggregated news list.</p>
<p>You can see this in the screenshots a Facebook spokeswoman sent me, embedded here. The news box above is missing the &#8220;hide all&#8221; option offered for Spotify, below. (Her news box happened to include the reading activity of Washington Post CEO Don Graham, who is on the Facebook board of directors.)</p>
<p>The Washington Post automatically shares every story read on its site by anyone who has installed its Social Reader App. (And that&#8217;s a lot of people &#8212; the app has 1.9 million monthly active users, according to Facebook, including about a quarter of my Facebook friends.) The publication aggressively promotes its app to those users&#8217; friends, by asking them to install it when they click from Facebook on a link to a Washington Post story.</p>
<p>For his part, Washington Post Chief Digital Officer Vijay Ravindran said the integration with Facebook is a work in progress.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/FacebookSpotify.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-143633" title="FacebookSpotify" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/FacebookSpotify-380x119.png" alt="" width="380" height="119" /></a>&#8220;We&#8217;re excited to be part of a small set of apps that are learning as Facebook is learning about the power of the Open Graph,&#8221; Ravindran said. &#8220;We&#8217;re encouraged by how things are going to date but we also know that we could do a better job having a more engaging app and there&#8217;s a lot of evolution to build upon what they&#8217;ve done.&#8221;</p>
<p>A Facebook spokeswoman said the best way for a user to downvote the aggregated news story box is to right-click and select the &#8220;unmark as top news&#8221; option.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is something we&#8217;re testing, and we&#8217;re continuing to gather feedback based on people&#8217;s actions with these stories and others related to the Open Graph,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>My experience is, of course, biased by my news-junkie habits and the preferences of my particular set of friends. According to <a href="http://appdata.com/">AppData</a>, the Washington Post Social reader has 210,000 daily users, while the Guardian&#8217;s Facebook app has 420,000. A spokeswoman for Yahoo said 400,000 people are opting in per day to share their news-reading activity on Facebook.</p>
<p>Anyway, there are lots of things to complain about in the world and on Facebook, but I thought I&#8217;d let you know that I tried to get to the bottom of this one.</p>

<p>Last week at Facebook&#8217;s f8 developers confab, I ran right into my old boss, Washington Post Chairman Don Graham.</p>
<p>While I could go on about what a privilege it was to spend my formative journalism years at the legendary newspaper and how critical its steadfast owners were to exemplifying all that is quality about the media, all Don wanted to talk about was now and the future. </p>
<p>And that would be how to make sure his media company was going to successfully make the transition to social. Thus, he was at f8 not only because he is a longtime board member of Facebook, but because he was eagerly showing off the Washington Post&#8217;s nifty new app for the social networking giant called Social Reader. </p>
<p>With the motto, &#8220;News. Better With Friends,&#8221; it&#8217;s an elegantly done version of what other publishers are trying, allowing users to instantly share the stories they have read with friends and also seeing what those friends are reading.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Don talking about Social Reader and showing it off on his Apple iPad, as well as some choice words about the future of news in general.</p>

<p>In one memorable episode of the famous old short films &#8220;The Little Rascals,&#8221; after not getting invited to a party, the Our Gang little dudes decided to form their own group, comically called &#8220;The He-Man Woman-Haters Club.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words: <em>No girls allowed!</em></p>
<p>While it was wink-wink cute when Spanky, Alfalfa and Buckwheat huffed and puffed about keeping out Darla&#8211;which they never ever could do&#8211;back in the last century, it&#8217;s not quite as adorkable when it comes to the boards of all the major Web 2.0 hotshots these days.</p>
<p>That would be Twitter, Facebook, Zynga, Groupon and Foursquare, none of which have any women as directors.</p>
<p>As in <em>zero</em>.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s most remarkable is that most of these start-ups are run by what I consider enlightened and open-minded entrepreneurs, mostly young enough to be part of a generation more inclined to value equality and diversity in the workplace.</p>
<p>In addition, each of these companies has a massive base of women consumers, in some cases well over 50 percent of its audience.</p>
<p>Thus, it would seem logical that in casting about for those to help guide these companies, one or two women leaders might slip in.</p>
<p>To be fair, it&#8217;s not for lack of trying, but of completion, as was the case with Twitter&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">recent addition of three new board members</a>.</p>
<p>They were longtime Silicon Valley exec Peter Currie, Flipboard CEO and co-founder Mike McCue and former DoubleClick leader David Rosenblatt.</p>

<p>All are deeply qualified for the Twitter board, which is obviously prepping for its next stage of growth and maturity.</p>
<p>But in its search, the San Francisco microblogging site did not manage to cast the net quite wide enough.</p>
<p>While sources said at least one prominent online woman exec was considered, there were some legitimate issues with her appointment, and it was not completed.</p>
<p>Still, one might imagine Twitter could have tried harder to find other workable choices.</p>
<p>Currently, the Twitter board is made up of the new trio, as well as Benchmark Capital&#8217;s Peter Fenton, Union Square Ventures&#8217; Fred Wilson, Bijan Sabet of Spark Capital, CEO Dick Costolo and co-founders Evan Williams and Jack Dorsey.</p>
<p>Things are not any better over at Facebook, which has several prominent women execs running the show, most especially its high-profile COO Sheryl Sandberg.</p>
<p>But, inexplicably, though she does attend board meetings, she is not yet a director of Facebook, nor is any other woman.</p>
<p>In fact, here is Sandberg on topic at a recent TED event for women, in an eloquent speech titled &#8220;Why We Have So Few Women Leaders&#8221;:</p>

<p>Instead, the Facebook board is all men, all the time, composed of CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, prominent techie and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, investor Peter Thiel, Accel Partners&#8217; Jim Breyer and Washington Post head Don Graham.</p>
<p>It is no better at three of the most prominent recent Web 2.0 start-ups, which one source attributes to the lack of woman VCs, who are often the first board members after major investment rounds.</p>
<p>At Zynga, the hot social gaming company in San Francisco, it continues, with an all-male board, despite a very heavily female audience for its casual social games.</p>
<p>That would be co-founder and CEO Mark Pincus, COO Owen Van Natta, investor Bing Gordon of Kleiner Perkins, investor Reid Hoffman and Brad Feld of the Foundry Group.</p>
<p>The same is true at woman-targeted&#8211;spas, spas and more spas&#8211;social buying site Groupon, which has an unusually large board for a start-up and made up of&#8211;as per usual&#8211;all men.</p>

<p>The list: Co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason, Accel Partners&#8217; Kevin Efrusy, former AT&#038;T President and COO John Walter, New Enterprise Associates&#8217; Harry Weller and Peter Barris, former AOL exec Ted Leonsis, 37Signals co-founder Jason Fried and early investors Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell.</p>
<p>And, much smaller, is Foursquare&#8217;s board, which is the trio of co-founder and CEO Dennis Crowley, co-founder Naveen Selvadurai and Union Square Ventures&#8217; Albert Wenger.</p>
<p>New investors&#8211;Ben Horowitz of Andreessen Horowitz and O&#8217;Reilly AlphaTech Ventures&#8217; Bryce Roberts&#8211;have observer status and both are, needless to say, dudes.</p>
<p>There is no question it is tough to make sure there is a good balance of qualified women leaders to men in tech&#8211;it is an issue we wrestle with every single year for the program of speakers at our own <strong>All Things Digital</strong> conference, although we are most excellent on this issue on our Web site and conference staff.</p>
<p>But it can be done, especially at public tech companies. Google has two women on its board of nine directors; Yahoo has three of 10; even Oracle has two of a dozen.</p>
<p>But a grand total of zero at the leading companies of Web 2.0 is not just a coincidence.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a shame.</p>
<p>Tomorrow, BoomTown will post a list of great women who would be superb directors for any of these companies, but until then, let&#8217;s not follow in Spanky&#8217;s steps:</p>

<p>Google CEO Eric Schmidt did one of his patented throat-clearers in an <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704107104574569570797550520.html">opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal</a> today and it pretty much begs for translation.</p>
<p>Well, BoomTown shall not tarry from the task of decoding the extra-long rumination from the head of Google (GOOG), who was responding to the recent spate of aggressive attacks by traditional media publishers.</p>
<p>They have blamed the search giant for everything from their current business woes to the destruction of journalism to Tiger Woods&#8217;s dicey marital troubles.</p>
<p>Okay, not that! But the rest for sure.</p>
<p>First and foremost among the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091124/whats-really-behind-the-rupe-a-dope-with-google-and-microsoft-here-are-five-possibilities/">attackers has been Rupert Murdoch</a>, CEO and ruler-of-all-he-surveys at News Corp. (NWS), which owns The Wall Street Journal and this Web site.</p>
<p>How ironic, yet still typically cozy from a corporate bigwig point of view! I call you a cur in public, but please use my newspaper so that I can get some decent traffic from this wrestling match.</p>
<p>But all is not what it seems in the Schmidt piece, of course, so here&#8217;s the translation:</p>
<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em><strong>How Google Can Help Newspapers</p>
<p>Video didn&#8217;t kill the radio star, and the Internet won&#8217;t destroy news organizations. It will foster a new, digital business model.</p>

<p><strong>Translation:</strong> We come in peace, always. You know, like the freakily calm lady from &#8220;V,&#8221; who is really a lizard under all that pretty and is actually secretly trying to decide between grilling and broiling all you whiny news people.</p>

<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>It&#8217;s the year 2015. The compact device in my hand delivers me the world, one news story at a time. I flip through my favorite papers and magazines, the images as crisp as in print, without a maddening wait for each page to load.</p>
<p>Even better, the device knows who I am, what I like, and what I have already read. So while I get all the news and comment, I also see stories tailored for my interests. I zip through a health story in The Wall Street Journal and a piece about Iraq from Egypt&#8217;s Al Gomhuria, translated automatically from Arabic to English. I tap my finger on the screen, telling the computer brains underneath it got this suggestion right.</p>
<p>Some of these stories are part of a monthly subscription package. Some, where the free preview sucks me in, cost a few pennies billed to my account. Others are available at no charge, paid for by advertising. But these ads are not static pitches for products I&#8217;d never use. Like the news I am reading, the ads are tailored just for me. Advertisers are willing to shell out a lot of money for this targeting.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> It&#8217;s the year 2015 in the United States of Google, where the new country colors are a festive green, blue, red and yellow.</p>

<p>Every day, citizens will receive news specially aimed at them, such as &#8220;The Health Benefits of Sergey Worship.&#8221; Ads will also be tailored to citizens&#8217; likes and dislikes, such as a pitch for Googley deodorant with the motto: &#8220;Search me, because I smell nice!&#8221;</p>
<p>Costs will be billed to your accounts at the National Bank of Google.</p>
<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>This is a long way from where we are today. The current technology&#8211;in this case the distinguished newspaper you are now reading&#8211;may be relatively old, but it is a model of simplicity and speed compared with the online news experience today. I can flip through pages much faster in the physical edition of the Journal than I can on the Web. And every time I return to a site, I am treated as a stranger.</p>
<p>So when I think about the current crisis in the print industry, this is where I begin&#8211;a traditional technology struggling to adapt to a new, disruptive world. It is a familiar story: It was the arrival of radio and television that started the decline of newspaper circulation. Afternoon newspapers were the first casualties. Then the advent of 24-hour news transformed what was in the morning papers literally into old news.</em></p>

<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>Now the Internet has broken down the entire news package with articles read individually, reached from a blog or search engine, and abandoned if there is no good reason to hang around once the story is finished. It&#8217;s what we have come to call internally the atomic unit of consumption.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> &#8220;Atomic unit of consumption&#8221; is one of those terms we don&#8217;t expect you small-brained people to even begin to understand. Although you use only eight percent of your mental capacity, we here at Google use an average of 71 percent, tracking on our search share.</p>
<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>Painful as this is to newspapers and magazines, the pressures on their ad revenue from the Internet is causing even greater damage. The choice facing advertisers targeting consumers in San Francisco was once between an ad in the Chronicle or Examiner. Then came Craigslist, making it possible to get local classifieds for free, followed by Ebay and specialist Web sites. Now search engines like Google connect advertisers directly with consumers looking for what they sell.</em></p>

<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>With dwindling revenue and diminished resources, frustrated newspaper executives are looking for someone to blame. Much of their anger is currently directed at Google, whom many executives view as getting all the benefit from the business relationship without giving much in return. The facts, I believe, suggest otherwise.</p>
<p>Google is a great source of promotion. We send online news publishers a billion clicks a month from Google News and more than three billion extra visits from our other services, such as Web Search and iGoogle. That is 100,000 opportunities a minute to win loyal readers and generate revenue&#8211;for free. In terms of copyright, another bone of contention, we only show a headline and a couple of lines from each story. If readers want to read on they have to click through to the newspaper&#8217;s Web site. (The exception are stories we host through a licensing agreement with news services.) And if they wish, publishers can remove their content from our search index, or from Google News.</em></p>

<p><strong>What Eric wrote:</strong> <em>The claim that we&#8217;re making big profits on the back of newspapers also misrepresents the reality. In search, we make our money primarily from advertisements for products. Someone types in digital camera and gets ads for digital cameras. A typical news search&#8211;for Afghanistan, say&#8211;may generate few if any ads. <p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>It&#8217;s understandable to look to find someone else to blame. But as Rupert Murdoch has said, it is complacency caused by past monopolies, not technology, that has been the real threat to the news industry.</em></p>

<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>We recognize, however, that a crisis for news-gathering is not just a crisis for the newspaper industry. The flow of accurate information, diverse views and proper analysis is critical for a functioning democracy. We also acknowledge that it has been difficult for newspapers to make money from their online content. But just as there is no single cause of the industry&#8217;s current problems, there is no single solution. We want to work with publishers to help them build bigger audiences, better engage readers, and make more money.</p>
<p>Meeting that challenge will mean using technology to develop new ways to reach readers and keep them engaged for longer, as well as new ways to raise revenue combining free and paid access. I believe it also requires a change of tone in the debate, a recognition that we all have to work together to fulfill the promise of journalism in the digital age.</em></p>

<p><strong>What Schmidt wrote:</strong> <em>This is a start. But together we can go much further toward that fantasy news gadget I outlined at the start. The acceleration in mobile phone sophistication and ownership offers tremendous potential. As more of these phones become connected to the Internet, they are becoming reading devices, delivering stories, business reviews and ads. These phones know where you are and can provide geographically relevant information. There will be more news, more comment, more opportunities for debate in the future, not less.</p>
<p>The best newspapers have always held up a mirror to their communities. Now they can offer a digital place for their readers to congregate and talk. And just as we have seen different models of payment for TV as choice has increased and new providers have become involved, I believe we will see the same with news. We could easily see free access for mass-market content funded from advertising alongside the equivalent of subscription and pay-for-view for material with a niche readership.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> Smartphones are the answer! Sure! Your aging demo loves reading teeny-weeny writing on a device they want to throw against a wall.</p>
<p>Or maybe you can be like HBO! Except you&#8217;ll need more borderline porn and Mafia guys.</p>

<p>Another day, another tech blog eruption featuring Michael &#8220;The Volcano&#8221; Arrington of TechCrunch and, this time, Wired&#8217;s Betsy &#8220;Ain&#8217;t-Backing-Down&#8221; Schiffman.</p>
<p>When last we checked in with Arrington, he was elegantly telling <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080403/memo-to-chris-shipley-luca-brasi-sleeps-with-the-fishes/">Chris Shipley that her longstanding tech conference</a> might want to take a dirt nap. Specifically: &#8220;Demo needs to die.&#8221;</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all!</p>
<p>Before that, Arrington was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080320/boomtown-decodes-techcrunchs-dream-team-memo-so-you-dont-have-to/">comparing tech blogs to gangs and contemplating bloody fights with some post-bashing tango</a>. In it, he advised tech blogs not to raise money and talked of the importance of sector roll-ups without, <em>oops</em>, actually mentioning TechCrunch was both considering raising money and doing a roll-up of tech blogs.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s one incredible quote from the piece: &#8220;Personally, I&#8217;ve found that if a fight is necessary, fight clean and fight hard. Make it as bloody as possible and end it fast, with no loose ends dangling about. Leave no lingering emotional stone unturned. When everyone gets up and dusts themselves off, the issue should have been resolved one way or the other, and both sides should be happy to shake hands and tango another day, even if the handshaking is done privately.&#8221;</p>

<p>In the latest kerfuffle, <a href="http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/05/techcrunch-butt.html">Schiffman wrote what was a minor criticism</a> at the very end of a piece about a syndication deal that TechCrunch struck with the Washington Post (WPO).</p>
<p>She wrote: &#8220;We&#8217;ve got nothing against TechCrunch, but it seems crazy-crazy to us that the Washington Post, a paper known for the sort of reporting that can take down U.S. presidents, is publishing content written by a dude who invests in the companies he writes about. But what do we know.&#8221;</p>
<p><span id="more-68092"></span></p>
<p>Snarky yes, but Arrington writes like this all the time (as does BoomTown).</p>
<p>More importantly, since Arrington does actually invest in several companies and says he also advises some covered by TechCrunch (<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/about-techcrunch/">see here in a very short disclosure</a>, given he invested his own money), it is not an outrageous point to make related to a deal with a venerable media institution like the Post.</p>
<p>In any case, Arrington has got to have heard this one before and in much worse ways.</p>
<p>I know I have many times due to my relationship with Megan Smith, who is currently a vice president at Google (GOOG), <a href="http://allthingsd.com/about/kara-swisher/ethics/">as is disclosed here in detail</a>, even though I do not own one single share in the company and&#8211;TMI&#8211;we split all costs exactly down to the penny (except for all those pricey over-and-above-birthdays-and-Christmas toys she likes to buy for our kids, which I sensibly refuse to pay for).</p>
<p>As I wrote in my disclosure: &#8220;I am well aware of the controversies surrounding ethics online now swirling about, some of which have resulted in giving readers some pause about the quality and honesty of some in the blogosphere. Such wariness is always a good thing for everyone and I encourage readers to ask tough questions and demand more of those providing them information of all kinds. I know that I am asking for a large measure of trust from readers of the site, and I pledge to do everything I can to be deserving of that trust.&#8221;</p>
<p>So I get maybe being irked, especially if you are trying to be as transparent as possible, and maybe writing Wired a stern note saying it was unfair.</p>
<p>But instead of that, he chose to respond by putting out another set of classy <a href="http://twitter.com/TechCrunch/statuses/806975301">bons mots on Twitter</a>: &#8220;Wow. F*** You too, Wired.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a post yesterday, <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/13/ok-wired-lets-do-this/">peacefully titled &#8220;OK, Wired, Let&#8217;s Do This,&#8221;</a> Arrington blamed this explosion on &#8220;a night of heavy drinking at the Time 100 party.&#8221;</p>
<p>OK, maybe he&#8217;s drunk and incredibly rash, but it was liquor imbibed at a very important soiree!</p>

<p>But post-drinking, I assume since it was posted in the afternoon, Arrington followed up with <a href="http://twitter.com/TechCrunch/statuses/807550583">another winner on Twitter</a>: &#8220;No one at Wired is responding to me today about their post yesterday. I&#8217;m organizing a Wired burning party (the mag, not their offices).&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, <em>phew</em>, just the magazines on fire! Ha, ha, ha!</p>
<p>Actually, not funny at all&#8211;I am just humorless about book-burning, so I will take any and all criticism on the subject for that stance, given the ugly history of the burning of media&#8211;but there you have it.</p>
<p>Except not at all.</p>
<p>Arrington wrote his own piece yesterday, which was meant to be reasonable, although it was seeping with indignation about small slights over when and how Wired responded to him (which appeared to have been done, but not to his liking, as <a href="http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/05/some-advice-to.html">Wired&#8217;s follow-up responding to Arrington&#8217;s antics recounted</a>) and with too much of a gotcha focus on <a href="http://valleywag.com/390161/wired-has-nothing-against-buttmunch-++-excuse-me-techcrunch">what is a dumb, name-calling tag word Wired used</a> on the story.</p>
<p>But while he was right about the juvenile tag, Arrington then, like clockwork, in the very same piece called Schiffman a &#8220;troll.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, at least he&#8217;s consistent.</p>
<p>But not at all like what I know the Washington Post expects from those it affiliates with, which is to say making the highest and most strenuous efforts to be civil, fair and temperate.</p>
<p>While it has not always succeeded at this&#8211;its <a href="http://www.onthemedia.org/yore/transcripts/transcripts_123104_cooke.html">Janet Cooke debacle in the early 1980s</a>, for example, was a black eye&#8211;the Post has always tried to aim for the highest of standards.</p>
<p>How do I know this? Because I started delivering mail at the Post while I was in college at Georgetown University, was later an intern there and then a reporter for a decade more.</p>

<p>I could not be more proud of my time there or be more in admiration of the people who work there every day&#8211;even in these tough times for newspapers&#8211;who try very hard to act, when representing the Post, as professionals.</p>
<p>No one exemplifies that more than the Post&#8217;s owner and CEO Don Graham (pictured here), whom I admire profoundly. At once a gentle soul and also wise to the ways of the world, Graham is a true hero of mine.</p>
<p>While I love my various jobs at Dow Jones (NWS), I have missed being at the Post many times over the years, and Graham and I have always been in touch.</p>
<p>So I am very sorry to see the Post dragged into this temper tantrum by one of its new contributors, sullying its fine reputation.</p>
<p>And if it is just showboating, as some have suggested&#8211;a traffic-inducing faux wrestling match for the cheap seats in the back (and they <em>are</em> cheap)&#8211;than it is a lousy show.</p>
<p>In any case, Arrington will surely once again&#8211;as he has&#8211;claim that competitors like Wired and also this site should not comment on his behavior at TechCrunch (and, just to be clear, <strong>AllThingsD</strong>, wholly owned by Dow Jones, is not vying with TechCrunch to appear in the Washington Post either).</p>
<p>But standards and public online conduct are an increasingly important issue, if the blogosphere&#8211;as I believe Arrington must want also&#8211;is to have the kind of credibility it deserves.</p>
<p>And while Arrington and I obviously do not see eye-to-eye on a lot of stuff&#8211;I have criticized some of TechCrunch&#8217;s practices and Arrington&#8217;s own professional behavior directly to him via email and to others and I have even written about it several times <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080504/ballmers-out-when-pigs-fly/">(here, for example)</a>&#8211;I do admire TechCrunch&#8217;s energy and relentless focus and the way it has forced others to compete more rigorously in covering the Web 2.0 sector.</p>
<p>And, lastly, whether Schiffman or I question such a syndication deal, it really does not matter, since it is solely up to the editors of the Post as to what they want to publish.</p>
<p>So, if they choose TechCrunch, that&#8217;s their decision.</p>
<p>But&#8211;and I can&#8217;t wait to see what delightful name Arrington slings at me for saying so&#8211;TechCrunch, in accepting what is a real honor and validation from one of this country&#8217;s great media organizations, should be ashamed of returning the favor by dragging the Post into a largely unprovoked and dirty gutter fight.</p>

<p>I stopped on by Google&#8217;s Zeitgeist yesterday to say hello to Washington Post CEO and Chairman Don Graham, who was attending the search giant&#8217;s annual confab of powermongers, where they talk about big issues and mostly engage in Olympic schmoozing.</p>
<p>I had used my old boss Graham to make <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071009/the-childrens-hour-facebook-apps-are-for-toddlers-there-we-said-it/">a point about the immature nature of Facebook apps in a post Tuesday</a>. (He had sent me a digital &#8220;Hot Potato&#8221; that prompted my diatribe, so I wanted to make sure he knew it was not personal that I was not tossing it back or wherever one was supposed to toss one.)</p>
<p>Zeitgeist sessions are off the record, although it was crawling with press, including bigwigs like Graham and New York Times head Arthur Sulzberger Jr., as well as a spate of other movers and shakers like (Google favorite) former Vice President Al Gore.</p>
<p>So, given the restrictions, I decided to use my visit to further my ongoing quest to ask Web players about what&#8217;s new and what&#8217;s hyped. While there, I put the screws to longtime Internet serial entrepreneur Yossi Vardi (ICQ among others) and also Dow Jones Online President Gordon McLeod in what is a very short video.</p>

For those who don't know what a digital Hot Potato is: It is an widget (also called a third-party app) created by a very nice-looking group of guys at a design outfit called Hungry Machine for the Facebook platform.

"You have to pass it on and watch it travel around the world. 27,012 other people did!"

With all due respect to Don Graham (who is a mentor of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, by the way), Hungry Machine and all world-trotting spuds, I don't think so.]]></description>

<p>I get it, <em>I get it</em>. Millions upon millions of people are downloading and using these apps, part of a very clever ecosystem <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070525/facebook-tries-harder/">Zuckerberg unleashed in late May</a>.</p>
<p>Under the scheme, widget-makers got to go wild on Facebook and Facebook got to offload a chunk of its feature development onto others. (See my movie below of the f8 launch, including a somewhat awkward Zuckerberg on the stage.)</p>
<p>At that event, a 750-person jeans-and-T-shirt-clad army of Web developers gathered at the San Francisco Design Center&#8217;s Concourse and began to create even more apps in earnest with an all-night hackathon.</p>
<p>&#8220;Until now, social networks have been closed platforms,&#8221; said Zuckerberg at the event, calling on outside developers to integrate their applications into the service. &#8220;Today, we&#8217;re going to end that.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, so far, as popular as those apps have become, what Zuckerberg and the widget-makers have wrought is mostly silly, useless and time-wasting and the kazillion users of these widgets are pretty much just acting like little children.</p>
<p>I never thought I would call the often frivolous AOL back in the day&#8211;very simply, a Neanderthal version of Facebook&#8211;a mature offering in comparison.</p>
<p>While I will admit when I am not chewing nails that a lot of these apps are somewhat fun, I can&#8217;t help but ask myself that lyric from the old <a href="http://www.peggylee.com/home.html">Peggy Lee classic</a>: &#8220;Is that all there is?&#8221;</p>
<p>And if that is all there is, can Facebook really build a viable and long-lasting business on what is essentially a bunch of games that will ultimately become wearying for users? Doesn&#8217;t it need more robust apps that actually are useful and relevant and make Facebook the service that Zuckerberg has often told me was a &#8220;utility&#8221;?</p>
<p>While Facebook&#8211;with a cleaner and more strict look and a better navigation&#8211;is surely less goofy than rival MySpace for anyone over 12 years old, and its video, photo and email features are nice, the vast majority of its apps are still mostly as dumb as a box of hammers.</p>
<p>Maybe they will attract scads of ads and maybe not, but first consider the top apps on Facebook right now.</p>
<p>Slide&#8217;s No. 1 Top Friends, which has 2.94 million daily active users, lets you &#8220;add a box of up to 32 of your BFFs to your profile.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Wheeeee! Paris Hilton forever!</em></p>
<p>Not to pick on them particularly, as I think they are great developers (see <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/kara-visits-slide-in-san-francisco/">my post on Slide here</a>), but Slide&#8217;s FunWall (2.2 million) lets you add lots of bells and whistles to what is essentially graffiti-writing.</p>
<p>And its SuperPoke (1.16 million) is just plain rude when it notes, &#8220;Why just poke when you can pinch, hug, tickle, pwn [sic] or even throw sheep?&#8221;</p>

<p>iLike (694,000), with its music recommendations and sharing, is all well and good, but also light.</p>
<p>And X Me from Rock You (673,000)? &#8220;Tired of just poking? X Me opens up a whole new world of action-based communication, for example, &#8216;Hug Her, Slap Him, Tickle Them!&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Oh no, you didn&#8217;t.</em></p>
<p>What else? Vampires. Werewolves. Naughty Gifts. An Honesty Box where you can say gross things in messages anonymously.</p>
<p>And my rececent favorite, which grew 4,107% the other day, called Pop Ur Zit!</p>

<p>Is it <em>just</em> me?</p>
<p>No, thankfully. Wired Editor and &#8220;The Long Tail&#8221; author (who should know about this stuff) Chris Anderson wrote about the <a href="http://www.thelongtail.com/the_long_tail/2007/10/are-facebook-ap.html">Facebook apps market in a post</a>, which was actually a reaction to another analysis report by Tim O&#8217;Reilly.</p>
<p>By way of background, Anderson noted that O&#8217;Reilly&#8217;s report showed that Facebook apps were &#8220;top-heavy, with the top 84 apps of the 5,000 analyzed having 87% of the traffic,&#8221; before moving on to the obvious conclusion of why this was so:</p>
<blockquote><p>1. The social networking on Facebook is too powerful. This is the tyranny of network effects, where viral success is the only kind and popularity snowballs into an avalanche or goes nowhere at all. That sort of herd behavior is usually a sign of an immature market.<br />
   2. Most apps are total crap. That, in turn, may say something about the whole idea of Facebook as a platform. But I&#8217;ll leave that discussion for another day.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>So, let&#8217;s discuss. And no potato-throwing, please.</p>
