			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You know what’s cool? A <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120102/appy-holidays-the-first-billion-download-week/"><em>billion</em> apps</a> downloaded in a single week.</p>
<p>That milestone was reached in the last week of 2011. And what’s really interesting is how people are finding their apps. According to new monthly data from <a href="www.chomp.com">Chomp</a>, a search engine for mobile apps, most users aren’t looking for specific app titles, but rather features and functions &#8212; and the top feature is &#8220;free.&#8221; <img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/SmartphoneApps1-380x251.png" alt="" title="SmartphoneApps" width="380" height="251" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-159872" /></p>
<p>In December, 82 percent of iOS users, and 86 percent of Android users, looked for apps using such common search terms as “free,” “games,” &#8220;free games,” “fun games,” “ringtones” and “shopping,” rather than searching by name.</p>
<p>The word “Christmas” appeared on Chomp’s list of top search terms for December, across multiple countries. The company says query volume for the word, already elevated that month, spiked an additional 300 percent immediately before the holiday, then decreased again on Dec. 25. 	 	 	 		</p>
<p>Chomp’s data was culled from a sample of one million search queries, across mobile platforms iOS 4.0 and higher, and Android 2.1 and higher. Chomp, which powers app searches on Verizon Android phones, just started measuring tablet-app downloads, so those apps currently account for a very small percentage of its data.</p>
<p>What is somewhat surprising about this report is that other data, put out last year by Latitude and MTV Networks, shows that personal recommendation is one of the biggest driving factors when it comes to app downloads, with an estimated 53 percent of mobile app users saying their friends’ suggestions are most important when it comes to finding and trying apps. If that’s the case &#8212; say, if someone asks, “What’s that iPhone app that makes photos look old and cool?” (as I was recently asked) &#8212; users wouldn’t necessarily tell their friends to search for “free photo app” but rather, look up “Instagram.”</p>
<p>Chomp’s technology, however, is meant to enable app search based on functionality; it also factors user recommendations and social recommendations into its algorithm. Ben Keighran, the company&#8217;s founder and CEO, says he believes Chomp’s app-recommendation engine offers more to users than just lists of top-selling apps. (For app creators, though, nabbing a top-ranking spot in app stores has been shown to boost downloads significantly, as evidenced by <a href="http://blog.runkeeper.com/mobile-app/android-market">RunKeeper’s 637 percent increase in average daily downloads </a>after it became a featured app in the Android store.)</p>
<p>Chomp’s own list of top apps for iOS devices in December included WhatsApp Messenger, JunoWallet GiftCards, Pandora, and Adobe Photoshop Express; the top Android downloads for December were Angry Birds Rio, eBay, Google+ and Google Sky Map. GT Racing: Motor Academy Free+ was at the top of Chomp&#8217;s international download charts.</p>
<p>Another interesting nugget from the monthly report: While paid-app downloads on Android showed no change, paid-app downloads for iOS jumped to 30 percent of all app downloads, for the first time ever. The jump was concentrated at the 99-cent price point, which increased from 15.9 percent to 17.8 percent of all apps.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For consumers who were early purchasers of Nintendo 3DS, the gaming company’s 3-D handheld device, Christmas came early this year.</p>
<p>When Nintendo first announced a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904823804576501984253248152.html">big 3DS price drop</a> this past summer due to sluggish sales, it <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/fttgI7OsQIB1tZqRMa5CtT45KLrmNkAY">promised</a> early buyers of the device &#8212; Nintendo 3DS “Ambassadors” &#8212; that they would be able to download new NES Virtual Console games at no charge before the games became available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. <img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/Nintendo3DS-380x250.png" alt="" title="Nintendo3DS" width="380" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-154337" /></p>
<p>Starting today, even more free games are available to 3DS buyers. This time, they’re Game Boy Advance titles &#8212; remember Game Boy? &#8212; including The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Wario Land 4, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mario Kart: Super Circuit and a handful of others, numbering 10 in total.</p>
<p>The games are available to customers in the U.S., Europe and Japan a day ahead of the highly anticipated <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903927204576570133159923122.html">Sony Vita handheld launch</a> in Japan.</p>
<p>The Game Boy Advance is a handheld gaming console introduced by Nintendo in 2001, more than a decade after the original Game Boy was launched and a few years ahead of the popular Nintendo DS&#8217;s debut. The device had a 32-bit processor and was described at the time as Nintendo’s fastest-selling game system ever. The last new title for the Game Boy Advance was brought to market in 2008.</p>
<p>For the 3DS, Nintendo can’t give away games fast enough. The freebie games are part of an overall push to sell more of the handheld unit, which had struggled to gain traction since its launch in March of this year. Nintendo said the 3DS <a href=" http://allthingsd.com/20111201/will-new-games-and-pink-hues-give-nintendo-3ds-a-needed-boost/">got a much-needed boost</a>, driving hardware sales up 49 percent, when Nintendo’s Super Mario 3D Land game hit the market in late November as part of a bundle.</p>
<p>Also, to give credit where it’s due, 3DS is kind of a big deal in Australia, according to the <a href="http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/games/blogs/screenplay/3ds-sets-sales-record-as-games-finally-arrive-20111215-1owos.html">Sydney Morning Herald</a>!</p>

<p>Memo to Flipboard, as well as Pulse, CNN&#8217;s Zite and AOL&#8217;s Editions: You might want to make some room in the already-crowded news and social reader space, because you&#8217;re about to get some bigfoot company.</p>
<p>Next Wednesday, according to sources close to the situation, Yahoo will finally officially unveil its offering, called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a>.</p>
<p>And perhaps as early as next week or in the weeks soon after, Google will also weigh in with its version of the genre &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/its-called-google-propeller-and-its-aimed-at-flipboard-and-facebook-too/">code-named Propeller</a> &#8212; which also might be the product&#8217;s name. Another moniker under strong consideration: Currents.</p>
<p>As I have previously reported, Google Propeller is an HTML5 reader for the Apple iPad and Android &#8212; essentially a souped-up version of similar apps such as Flipboard, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">AOL&#8217;s Editions</a>, Zite (which was just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">bought by Time Warner&#8217;s CNN</a>) and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110616/pulse-gets-quicker-with-9m-in-funding/">Pulse</a>. </p>
<p>All these apps are part of the drastically changing habits of media consumers, helping users better navigate numerous social and media feeds &#8212; such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as news sites and more &#8212; using handsome interfaces and touch technologies on tablet devices.</p>
<p>Flipboard, the most prominent and elegant of these offerings, is now available only on the Apple iPad. </p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s traction among elite users, along with its high-level design ethos and strong reviews, is why Google tried to buy the well-funded company last year, sources said.</p>
<p>But Flipboard &#8212; which is backed by some of tech&#8217;s biggest venture players, who have invested <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">more than $60 million at a $200 million valuation</a> &#8212; declined the kind offer.</p>
<p>At the time, sources said, Google told Flipboard execs that if it did not buy the start-up, it planned to do a version of its own.</p>
<p>Hence, after I heard about the product earlier this year, I dubbed it the <em>Flipinator</em>.</p>

<p>According to sources, Propeller will launch with a plethora of media partners, as well as integration into the Google+ social network. The aim of the search giant is to offer media companies easy tools for publishing content on these devices, as well as a better path to monetization.</p>
<p>That is essentially the same plan at Yahoo, which has been working on Livestand with hopes of it being a product that will woo publishers into tight collaboration with the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/02/16/video-demo-livestand-from-yahoo/">Livestand was announced</a> by Yahoo&#8217;s now-fired CEO Carol Bartz in February, at a speech at the World Mobile Congress in Spain.</p>
<p>At the time, Bartz demoed a magazinelike platform that would allow publishers to put up content easily and give users the ability to personalize their selections based on search history and interests.</p>
<p>Bartz called it &#8220;content in context.&#8221; (You can see the demo video below.)</p>
<p>But while Bartz promised the product within three months, development has been slowed by its complex technologies, bugs and the need to sign on publishers. </p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is pushing the product hard as a way for the company to reinvigorate its media products.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how many publishers Yahoo will have at launch, and neither are the distribution plans, beyond flacking it from the Web site and being present in app stores.</p>
<p>Google, on the other hand, has its Android platform to push out Propeller, although it all must work as well on Apple&#8217;s iPad, which is the dominant tablet on the market.</p>
<p>But just because both Yahoo and Google are big companies is by no means a guarantee of success &#8212; think Yahoo 360 or Google Wave or Buzz &#8212; and their lateness might be a hindrance.</p>
<p>And, in fact, other news reader apps are much further along. The leader, Flipboard, has already had four million downloads and 50 partnerships with leading publishers.</p>
<p>It also has started to introduce rich advertising products and, perhaps most importantly, has tight social integration with Twitter and Facebook.</p>
<p>There will be social elements on both Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and Google&#8217;s Propeller. But news reading will be stressed more, making them more like Pulse, a tiny but highly innovative start-up.</p>
<p>Each of the existing apps will presumably compete by adding on more features. Pulse recently added <a href="http://blog.pulse.me/your-news-everywhere-sync-sources-to-your-pul-0">cross-platform, cross-device syncing</a>, while Flipboard is close to unveiling <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/pre-200-million-valuation-flipboards-mike-mccue-at-sxsw-the-full-onstage-video/">an iPhone version</a> it has said it was working on.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Google PR declined comment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes spent a lot of yesterday&#8217;s earnings call discussing the company&#8217;s future in digital video. Here&#8217;s one of his focal points: <a href="http://www.flixstercollections.com/home.html">Flixster Collections</a>, a social movie portal his Warner Bros. studio is rolling out this week.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve given the service &#8212; which uses the Flixster brand that Warner Bros acquired earlier this year but which the studio built on its own over the last 12 months &#8212; a quick spin. Given that it just went into public beta yesterday, there&#8217;s no way to really assess how it&#8217;s going to work. Particularly since it&#8217;s supposed to be a social experience, and if no one you know is using it, it can&#8217;t be that social.</p>
<p>That said, you can at least get a sense of what Warner Bros. is trying to do here, and it&#8217;s a lot: They want Flixster to serve as your starting point whenever you&#8217;re thinking about renting, buying or watching a movie, or even when you&#8217;re thinking about thinking about it.</p>
<p>The free service ties into users&#8217; Amazon, Apple iTunes, Hulu and Netflix accounts &#8212; as well as your hard drive, if you let it. And it lets you and your friends see what you&#8217;ve already watched, via &#8220;collections&#8221; that get displayed as movie posters (it doesn&#8217;t seem to have hang-ups about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110725/live-in-the-u-s-no-cool-netflix-facebook-integration-for-you/">the &#8220;Bork law&#8221; that Netflix says prevents a Facebook integration the rental service wants to launch in the U.S.</a>). It can also direct you back to those services when you want to watch something else.</p>
<p>And if you&#8217;d like to see a movie that&#8217;s actually in theaters, it can help there, too, via links to movie reviews, trailers and online ticketing services. You can also imagine how this will tie in to &#8220;<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100720/ultraviolet-is-short-for-giant-media-drm-cloud-coalition-featuring-everyone-except-apple-and-disney/">Ultraviolet</a>,&#8221; the cloud/locker system for video that Warner and a big coalition of movie studios and tech companies (except for Apple and Amazon) are pushing.</p>

<p>Sound like a lot of &#8230; stuff? It is! And the scope of the service&#8217;s offerings, plus the fact that it requires a standalone download (for Mac and PCs only for now, though mobile apps will be coming), may be a lot for casual video fans to take in. Especially since Facebook and Twitter already do a pretty good job of letting you and your friends gab about movies &#8212; without the privacy worries of letting a service look into your Netflix queue or root around in your hard drive.</p>
<p>And again, since the service is really supposed to shine once you can start sharing your likes and dislikes with friends, getting enough folks to sign on might be a challenge. Still, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with trying something big and ambitious.</p>

<p>The program, <a href="http://www.easports.com/seasonticket">called EA Sports Season Ticket</a>, had been expected for some time, but the company is officially announcing the details today.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/08/EA_SeasonTicket.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-105174" title="EA_SeasonTicket" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/08/EA_SeasonTicket-199x285.png" alt="" width="199" height="285" /></a>For $25 a year, sports fans will be able to download complete versions of Madden NFL Football, NHL Hockey, FIFA Soccer, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and NCAA Football to their consoles and play them for three days until the game is on sale.</p>
<p>At that point, the users will have to pay full retail to continue playing the games, but will be able to continue their achievements in the game.</p>
<p>Other perks will include 20 percent discounts on downloadable extras, including accelerator packs and gear upgrades; free online content, such as the ability to create special teams for FIFA Soccer 12 (normally about $5); and membership recognition through recognition badges.</p>
<p>The subscription service, the first of its kind for Electronic Arts, will result in savings for hardcore players, but at the end of the day it is about giving players early access to the games.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is pretty groundbreaking,&#8221; said Peter Moore, the president of EA Sports. &#8220;We’ve been working on it for over a year now and we are finally ready.&#8221;</p>
<p>Market research revealed that far and away the thing people wanted most was early access and to &#8220;look at the game prior to the general population, and start getting the controls down,&#8221; Moore said. &#8220;It&#8217;s like they get to training camp three days early.&#8221;</p>
<p>EA Sports Season Ticket, which will be available on Microsoft&#8217;s Xbox and Sony&#8217;s PlayStation, will kick off on Aug. 30 with the release of Madden.</p>
<p>The one hitch about this program is that EA will have to ensure that the three days of free access will talk the players into buying the game &#8212; not out of it.</p>

<p>The retailer based in Grapevine, Texas, said it has acquired Spawn Labs Inc., a company that provides technology for playing games that run remotely on machines in data centers, rather than locally on a personal computer or console near the player. GameStop said it also has cut a deal to acquire a subsidiary of Stardock Systems Inc. called Impulse, which runs a service that lets consumers purchase and download computer games to their PCs. GameStop didn&#8217;t disclose financial terms for either transaction.</p>

<p>After successfully proving the popularity of app stores on mobile devices, Apple and Google have brought them to the personal computer. In January, Apple unveiled a version of its app marketplace to computers: the Mac App Store. In December, Google gave PC and Mac users a way to download apps on their computers using the Chrome Web Store, accessible via Google&#8217;s Chrome Web browser. Each of these marketplaces includes a different set of apps than those available for mobile; Apple&#8217;s offers about 3,400 apps and Google&#8217;s, about 3,700.</p>
<p>Apps (short for applications) are programs that have been around for decades, going back to the Palm Pilot years. But Apple changed the game in 2008 with its developer-friendly App Store, which now hosts some 350,000 apps that have been downloaded over 10 billion times on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Apple&#8217;s Mac App Store is a new way of organizing and distributing traditional programs that are installed on the computer, while Google&#8217;s Chrome Web Store offers apps that run in the browser and are remotely stored on the Web, not on the PC.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s Mac App Store surprised some users of the Snow Leopard operating system by popping up after a routine software update. An icon labeled &#8220;App Store&#8221; suddenly appeared in the system dock, and opened to reveal what looked much like a simplified version of Apple&#8217;s iTunes Store. The Mac App Store includes five quick ways to navigate through apps at the top: Featured, Top Charts, Categories, Purchased and Updates. This last section lights up with a number when an update is available for one of the downloaded apps, much like on the iPhone or iPad.</p>
<p>I signed into the Mac App Store using my iTunes account, which meant that any gift certificates or credits I had in my account carried over for use here. Suggestions of apps to download are offered in a visually digestible way, with lists like Staff Favorites, Top Free, What&#8217;s Hot, and apps sorted by category like Education, Medical and Social Networking. </p>
<p>One of the best features of the Mac App Store is that it gives users a way to download software they otherwise would have to buy and install using physical disks. And it lets people download individual programs, like iPhoto for $15, rather than buying the $49 suite of iLife &#8217;11 (which includes iPhoto, GarageBand, iMovie, iWeb and iDVD). I used the Mac App Store to download just iPhoto in roughly 25 minutes. The Mac App Store also offers iWork apps individually for $20 each. </p>
<p>A Mac App bonus: As soon as a program is installed, a clever animation makes the icon for the program gleefully hop from the Mac App Store down into the system dock.</p>

<p>Some popular games and apps found on the original App Store, like Angry Birds and Twitter, can be found on the Mac App Store. The TweetDeck and the NPR apps—two apps that I use a lot on my iPad—aren&#8217;t available, however. And there&#8217;s still no way to wirelessly sync one downloaded app to multiple devices, like downloading the Twitter app on the Mac App Store and seeing that app appear on my other Apple devices, like the iPad and iPhone.</p>
<p>Speculation continues about a cloud service that Apple will supposedly offer, allowing people to sync and store music and apps, but nothing like this is available today.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s Chrome Web Store differs from the Mac App Store in several ways. First, it&#8217;s available to anyone who has downloaded the Chrome Web browser on a Mac or PC. Apple&#8217;s Mac App Store is only usable on Macs. Second, some of its apps, which run off the Web rather than on the computer, replace entire programs that would otherwise run separately on the PC. </p>
<p>An example of this is TweetDeck, which runs in its app format just like the separate TweetDeck program that users must download and run separately on their computers. The Windows PC at my office has trouble running TweetDeck in its computer-run version, but it worked like a charm with the in-browser version from the Chrome Web Store.</p>
<p>Since Chrome Web Store apps are remotely stored in the cloud, people can use Chrome sync to synchronize data across multiple computers including apps, bookmarks and preferences.</p>
<p>This all goes along with Google&#8217;s overall strategy to create a Chrome operating system for the computer that encourages users to run all programs from their Web browsers and to store a majority of their data in the cloud. </p>
<p>The Chrome Web Store doesn&#8217;t offer large programs for permanent storage on the computer like Apple&#8217;s Mac App Store. For example, one of the most expensive apps that can be downloaded in the Chrome Web Store is Fraboom Gold, a self-described interactive children&#8217;s museum that costs $6 a month for a subscription. Apple sells Aperture 3, the company&#8217;s photo-editing software, for $80 at the Mac App Store.</p>
<p>Downloading and installing apps from the Chrome Web Store takes a click of the on-screen Install icon. After apps download, they appear on the home page of the browser, each represented by a large, colorful icon. These apps run in their own separate browser tabs. Notifications from some apps pervasively pop-up on the screen, even if that app&#8217;s tab isn&#8217;t on the screen.</p>
<p>Many of the Chrome Web Store apps I&#8217;ve downloaded were free, including TweetDeck, PostPost, Flixter, Salon for Chrome, NPR for Chrome, Read Later Fast, Amazon Windowshop and Word 2—a multiplayer game like Scrabble. Apps that aren&#8217;t free can be bought by entering credit-card information, and some app use in-app payments.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, if you&#8217;re looking for a way to buy an app for your mobile device while you&#8217;re on your PC, Amazon offers a hybrid approach by using the PC browser to sell apps for Android mobile devices. The Amazon Appstore for Android is accessible through the Amazon.com website, and can be installed on Android devices by entering a phone number or email, which sends a link to devices for downloading the Amazon Appstore. On the PC, people can click &#8220;Test Drive Now&#8221; to try apps on a simulated Android device before downloading the apps. A different free app is offered daily in the Amazon Appstore for Android.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s clear that stores selling apps are a hit on mobile devices, and the migration of these stores to the personal computer is a great help for consumers who want simpler methods of downloading free and paid apps for news, social networking, productivity, games, and education.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3855" title="Nintendo3DS_black" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/Nintendo3DS_black-275x237.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="237" />The Nintendo 3DS, which allows players to see 3-D images without special glasses, will go on sale in the U.S. on Sunday for $250.</p>
<p>Amazon is already claiming that the Nintendo 3DS was the biggest console launch ever on Amazon.com. It sold more units on January 19&#8211;the day it was announced&#8211;than any console had before, including the slimmed-down versions of the Xbox 360 last year and the PS3 the year before.</p>
<p>GameStop, <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=130125&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1542801&amp;highlight=">which will open 800 of its stores worldwide at midnight on sales day</a>, said pre-sales were strong. &#8220;Demand has been so strong that, literally, we are working every day with Nintendo to ensure that we have sufficient product. And they have been very good partners on this, and we fully expect to have sufficient product at launch; the demand is very strong,&#8221; said GameStop&#8217;s President Tony Bartel during the company&#8217;s earnings call yesterday, <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/260082-gamestop-s-ceo-discusses-q4-2010-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=qanda">according to a SeekingAlpha transcript</a>.</p>
<p>Nintendo <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704030704576071000866318220.html#ixzz1HcgpqZu6">expects to ship</a> about four million 3DS units worldwide by the end of March, and said 1.5 million of those will likely be in Japan. The device went on sale in Europe today.</p>
<p>The original DS has been insanely popular over the years.</p>
<p>Nintendo has sold more than 47 million portable video game systems in the U.S. since the original model launched in November 2004. By its own measures, it says, that makes Nintendo DS the nation’s best-selling video game system of all time.</p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s unclear whether the 3-D mechanism will draw a new audience, or whether it&#8217;s enough to encourage current users to upgrade.</p>
<p>In other words, can the 3DS repeat history? There&#8217;s a handful of reasons why this could be game over.</p>
<p>Nintendo warned that children under the age of six should not view the 3-D images due to health concerns, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110321/risks-of-children-viewing-3-d-fading-into-the-background-in-time-for-nintendos-handheld-launch/">although optometrists have since largely dismissed the worries.</a></p>
<p>Another concern is price.</p>
<p>The device costs $250, which is $100 more than the original. The games are also $10 more expensive at $39 each.</p>
<p>Finally, there&#8217;s the competition.</p>
<p>The Nintendo products are attractive because they don&#8217;t require a monthly fee. Increasingly, however, smartphones are offering an equal gaming experience. Apple&#8217;s iPad and iPod touch also don&#8217;t have monthly fees, and those devices have thousands of games for much less than $39. If 3-D is important, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110322/sprint-unveils-4g-tablet-and-a-phone-capable-of-viewing-3d-without-glasses/">two smartphones were unveiled this week at CTIA with 3-D capabilities</a>&#8211;without glasses.</p>
<p><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704662604576202673930040228.html?KEYWORDS=NIntendo+3DS+4+million">Katie Boehret of The Wall Street Journal and <strong>All Things Digital</strong> </a> gave the device a mixed review, calling out its clunkiness and remarking that the images sometimes made her dizzy.</p>
<p>However, the device offers a lot more features than the old model. In May, it&#8217;s expected to get a software update that will enable downloadable games and add a Web browser.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3856" title="CoG3DSbox" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/CoG3DSbox-275x247.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="247" />On launch day, users will have a choice of dozens of game titles, including several created by Nintendo, such as Pilotwings Resort, Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever &#038; New Friends, and Steel Diver.</p>
<p>Typically, the launch of new hardware spurs a spike in game sales.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s Ubisoft&#8217;s intention to launch more 3DS titles than any other third-party video game publisher this week to ride that wave. It has four titles ready at launch, including Asphalt 3D, Combat of Giants, Dinosaurs 3D and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon. In all, it has more than 15 games in development for the platform.</p>
<p>All of Ubisoft&#8217;s games at launch will be in 3-D; however, a toggle on the device allows you to convert the images to 2-D. The games also take advantage of other new features, such as the accelerometer, which in Asphalt 3D allows you to steer the car with motion control.</p>
<p>Ubisoft SVP of Sales and Marketing Tony Key said the goal is to be No. 1 on the platform. &#8220;The thing is going to be hot. Our initial prediction is that it will be hard to get your hands on one. It’s going to sell out. All kinds of people will be trying to buy one, ranging from the core gaming men to tweens to every gamer segment out there,&#8221; he said. &#8220;As fast as Nintendo can make them is as fast as they will be able to sell them.&#8221;</p>
<p>Both Amazon and GameStop are providing incentives for current DS owners to upgrade. They are offering $50 to $100 in trade-in credit on old gaming units, depending on the device.</p>
<p>Nintendo, which is based in Kyoto, Japan, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704662604576202673930040228.html?KEYWORDS=NIntendo+3DS+4+million">has previously said</a> that there&#8217;s been no apparent damage to its headquarters after the recent earthquake, and that business operations, including future product shipments, haven&#8217;t been affected.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The first videogame that promises 3-D without the goofy glasses is about to hit stores, but in my tests, it made me a little dizzy.</p>
<p>On March 27, Nintendo is introducing the <a href="http://Nintendo.com/3ds">3DS</a>. This apparent breakthrough turned negative for some when Nintendo added a warning to the device that said viewing 3-D images by children age 6 and under may cause vision damage.</p>

<p>Unaffected by age restrictions, I&#8217;ve been using the 3DS for the past week, and it&#8217;s a lot of fun—though its chunky design looks like the company is taking a step back rather than forward. Its 3-D screen works as advertised without 3-D glasses, though its effects can&#8217;t be seen from side angles, so friends trying to peek at the screen won&#8217;t see much. It made me a bit dizzy after a while, so I adjusted a 3-D Depth Slider to make the screen images appear less three-dimensional. This slider, or a setting in parental controls, can turn off the 3-D.</p>
<p>The videogame industry has a lot riding on Nintendo&#8217;s launch. Sales of new videogame consoles in 2010 fell 13% to $6.29 billion from $7.19 billion a year earlier, according to market-research firm NPD Group. Sales have begun edging up in the past few months following the launch in November of Microsoft Corp.&#8217;s Kinect motion-controller for its Xbox 360 console. </p>
<p>The industry is facing competition from sleeker, lighter smartphones which offer good quality, downloadable games free or for a few dollars, much less than the average $40 price for each Nintendo 3DS game. While Nintendo has created products with 3-D capabilities since the mid-1980s, none have caught on. Nintendo 3DS is the result of improvements in screen technology and lower prices for these screens. The company, which is based in Kyoto, Japan, saw no apparent damage to its headquarters after the recent earthquake, a spokesman says. Business operations, including future product shipments, haven&#8217;t been affected, he adds.</p>
<p>Nintendo&#8217;s competitors aren&#8217;t jumping on the portable 3-D bandwagon quite yet. Apple has no intention of introducing a 3-D, portable display anytime soon, say people familiar with the situation. When Sony announced plans for its Next Generation Portable gaming device in January, the company confirmed this device wouldn&#8217;t have 3-D. A spokesman says Sony considered including 3-D during the development process for this device, but decided to focus on other features. A Microsoft spokesman says as consumer demand evolves for 3-D, the company is committed to evolving its technology. Both Sony and Microsoft offer 3-D games and movies in the living room via their PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.</p>
<p>On March 27, 18 game titles will launch including Nintendogs + cats from Nintendo, and Madden NFL Football and Sims 3 from EA Sports. Almost all Nintendo DS games and DSiWare games will be playable in 2-D on the Nintendo 3DS. </p>
<p>Games that come loaded on the 3DS include Face Raiders and Nintendo 3DS Sound, which plays MP3 or AAC files and mixes your voice using funny sound effects. A Mii Maker program lets people make a Mii (personalized game character) with photos they take with the device. I created a particularly funny looking Mii with features that mirrored some of mine. But these Miis can&#8217;t be exported back to the Wii gaming console, where Miis first became popular.</p>

<p>Another cool game called AR Games lets users look through the 3DS cameras at six augmented-reality cards that come with the device. The cards make images more animated and three-dimensional. I found the effect so realistic, I reached out with my hand to make sure the imposed images, like a card with mini bull&#8217;s-eyes, weren&#8217;t actually on the table in front of me. </p>
<p>The 3DS has a few new features besides 3-D. A new circle pad works like a super flexible joystick for smoother navigation. Two outward-facing, stereo cameras take 3-D photos of friends or things, which can then be used in games. This made the games more personal and fun. </p>
<p>I used the 3-D photos I took in games like Face Raiders, which  makes use of its motion and gyro sensors. The 3DS has an Internet browser, which wasn&#8217;t available on the device I tested. A Nintendo spokesman says it won&#8217;t work on devices until May. Also in May, Nintendo will start offering downloadable games for the 3DS.</p>
<p>Programs called SpotPass and StreetPass allow the 3DS to wirelessly receive or send data on the go even when the device is in sleep mode. SpotPass detects wireless hot spots so the 3DS can download free software, videos or game data. In late May, SpotPass will let users access AT&amp;T&#8217;s Wi-Fi hot spots, free of charge. StreetPass lets one 3DS wirelessly exchange data with others within range (roughly 100 feet). A light on the 3DS indicates when the device has received new notifications. </p>
<p>The 3DS can perform other functions in sleep mode, like counting steps for a built-in pedometer. I carried the 3DS in my bag on several occasions throughout a conference and noticed a tiny icon of feet at the top of the screen with a number of steps beside it. </p>
<p>But the addition of 3-D technology to this device meant compromises on some key features. At eight ounces and 0.8-inch thick, the 3DS is slightly heavier and thicker than its comparable predecessor, the Nintendo DSi, which came out in 2009. (Apple&#8217;s iPod touch weighs less than half as much and is 0.28-inch thick.) </p>
<p>The 3DS&#8217;s estimated battery life is up to five hours while playing 3DS games, while regular Nintendo DS games will last up to eight hours. The DSi&#8217;s estimated battery life is up to 14 hours of game play. The 3DS is $100 more expensive than the DSi and its games are also pricier.</p>
<p>The Nintendo 3DS does a good job of incorporating 3-D with photos and games, as long as the games don&#8217;t make you feel dizzy. But its clunky form and limited functionality is up against steep competition from smartphones that cost less and offer more games.</p>

Dell and T-Mobile hope so, and that&#8217;s why they&#8217;ve brought out the Dell Streak 7, at just $200 with a two-year service contract.</p>

<p>The Streak 7, Dell&#8217;s second effort to compete with Apple&#8217;s $500 iPad, is the least expensive tablet I&#8217;ve seen from a major manufacturer, and claims to be the first capable of 4G cellular speeds (it also has Wi-Fi). Like many planned iPad competitors, it runs Google&#8217;s Android operating system. It&#8217;s also the first I&#8217;ve tested using a fast new processor from nVidia, the Tegra 2, which will power a number of new tablets this year.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, after a week of testing, I found the compromises Dell made to get to that low price make it impossible for me to recommend the Streak 7. Its screen, battery life, and software are all disappointing, and vastly inferior not only to the iPad&#8217;s, but also to those on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a high-quality Android tablet about the size of the Streak 7 released late last year. In other words, you get what you pay for.</p>
<p>Like the Galaxy Tab, the Streak 7 has a 7-inch screen, measured diagonally, or less than half the size of the iPad&#8217;s. But it&#8217;s large enough to be properly called a tablet, unlike Dell&#8217;s first Streak, an odd tweener device with a 5-inch screen—more like a big phone—that was released last year to a tepid response.</p>
<p>Dell concedes it wasn&#8217;t trying to build &#8220;the Cadillac of tablets&#8221; with the Streak 7, but was aiming for budget-conscious families and home use. Dell notes it has plans for a range of tablets with different prices, screen sizes and specs. </p>

<p>The Streak 7 has some strengths. Like the Tab, it&#8217;s smaller and lighter than the iPad, so easier to hold in one hand. It plays Flash videos, which the iPad can&#8217;t. And it has front and rear cameras, unlike the iPad. It can also be used, unlike the iPad, as a Wi-Fi hot spot.</p>
<p>Also, I found its cellular data speeds impressive. In tests I conducted in Silicon Valley, the Streak averaged 4.63 megabits per second in download speed on T-Mobile&#8217;s souped-up 3G network (which it calls 4G because it claims similar speeds). That was nearly twice as fast as the download speeds provided by my hotel&#8217;s Wi-Fi network. Cellular upload speeds were a bit slower than Wi-Fi, but still averaged about 1.2 mps. </p>
<p>But, in my view, the Streak 7&#8242;s minuses outweighed its pluses. Let&#8217;s start with battery life. In my tests, the Streak 7 conked out after a pathetic two hours and 10 minutes of watching movies. That compares with about 11.5 hours of continuous video playback for the iPad and just under seven hours for the Galaxy Tab, when I tested them. In a more mixed-use pattern, including Web surfing, game playing, music, email and social networking, with some short videos thrown in, the Streak 7 lasted between 5.5 and 6.5 hours, still underwhelming for a tablet.</p>
<p>Dell says its target audience will use the Streak 7 plugged into wall outlets and TVs through an extra-cost dock, but I wouldn&#8217;t buy a tablet with battery life this poor.</p>
<p>Screen resolution also was so low as to be fuzzy at times, especially in reading small type, and viewing the screen at an angle often reduced the image to a ghostly outline. The Streak 7&#8242;s screen has a resolution of 800&#215;480, below the much smaller iPhone screen, and well below the resolution of the iPad or the Galaxy Tab. While the internal chips drove video fine—as long as the batteries lasted—it looked worse than on the other two, as did photos.</p>
<p>The software also is a problem. It&#8217;s an older version of Android, called 2.2, which was never intended for tablets, and whose core apps—such as email, contacts and calendar—were designed for the smaller phone screens. Months ago, Samsung used the same version of Android on the Tab, but compensated by rewriting key apps to take advantage of the tablet screen, with more PC-like designs. Dell has done none of this on the Streak 7. All it added was a thin user interface called Stage featuring big, blocky widgets that group things like contacts and social updates, an old concept. It preloaded some kid-friendly and family-friendly apps, but some are mere  come-ons that require downloading the full app.</p>
<p>Worse, the Streak 7 appears  shortly before the true tablet-optimized version of Android, called Honeycomb, and Dell can&#8217;t promise that Streak 7 buyers can upgrade to Honeycomb. The company says the device has been designed to accommodate an upgrade, and is hopeful that it&#8217;s possible. But there is no guarantee. Buyers might get stuck with the old version built for phones.</p>
<p>Even on a tight budget, the Streak 7&#8242;s deficiencies might not make it worth the price. You&#8217;ll pay T-Mobile $30 or $50 a month for a capped data plan for two years. By contrast, the base iPad requires no payments to a cellular carrier, as it&#8217;s Wi-Fi only. Even if you buy the iPad with cellular connectivity from AT&amp;T, there is no contract. You pay $15 or $25 a month and end the cell service at will, with no penalty. </p>
<p>You can buy the Streak 7 without a contract, but then it costs $450, too much for a device with its drawbacks, and only $50 less than the far superior base iPad. Even the Streak 7&#8242;s subsidized price of $200 is only $50 less than what its carrier, T-Mobile, charges for the better Galaxy Tab with a two-year contract.</p>
<p>Dell is serious about competing in the tablet wars, and it may produce a winner yet. But its first efforts, in my view, missed the mark.</p>

Here, for instance, is an app launch from ESPN&#8211;not a new app, but a refresh of its <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/espn-radio/id330029818?mt=8">Radio app</a> at Apple&#8217;s iTunes store, featuring all sorts of personalization bells and whistles.</p>
<p>Most impressive: Searchable audio that lets you sift through all of the network&#8217;s daily audio output to find mentions of your favorite teams, players, etc. So you can leave work, head to the gym and download, um, all of the day&#8217;s Clay Matthews news, without having to waste time Web surfing through the day. (Yes, you&#8217;re going to Web surf, anyway.)</p>
<p>The Disney-owned sports network isn&#8217;t changing the app&#8217;s price, which will stay at $2.99. ESPN says it has sold &#8220;hundreds of thousands&#8221; of the apps since it launched in September 2009. 1-800-FLOWERS.com has signed on as the exclusive sponsor for the relaunch.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, ESPN.com&#8217;s audio ventures seem to be doing well across the board: ESPNRadio.com reaches more than three million listeners per month, while multimedia star Bill Simmons&#8217;s podcast racked up 42 million downloads last year. (I&#8217;m responsible for a couple hundred, at least.)</p>
<p>ESPN says a version for Google&#8217;s Android platform is on the way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/brokenwindows-275x218.png" alt="" title="brokenwindows" width="275" height="218" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2566" />Software giant Microsoft said today that it&#8217;s looking into a new vulnerability that affects <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/2501696.mspx">every version of Windows</a> currently supported. This is one of those zero-day vulnerabilities that come out of left field once in awhile and can be used by hackers to create troublemaking attacks.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/msrc/archive/2011/01/28/microsoft-releases-security-advisory-2501696.aspx">post</a> on Microsoft&#8217;s corporate security blog, the vulnerability resides in something called MIME HTML or MHTML, which allows certain Web content to be rendered in a browser or other applications, such as an email program. As with so many other vulnerabilities that have come before it, an attacker sends you an HTML link to trigger a script in Internet Explorer that could do bad things, like collect user information.</p>
<p>The easiest fix? Use Firefox or Google&#8217;s Chrome browser, which are unaffected. But for those devoted to IE, Redmond is suggesting that people turn off the ability to handle MHTML until a fix is ready. How to do that? There&#8217;s a helpful FixIt button, in yet another <a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/srd/archive/2011/01/28/more-information-about-the-mhtml-script-injection-vulnerability.aspx">blog post</a> on the subject, that downloads the software needed to enable the temporary measure.</p>
<p>The vulnerability was first disclosed on a Chinese Web site last week. So far, there&#8217;s no evidence that anyone has gone to the trouble of carrying out an attack using this method, but hey, with zero-day vulnerabilities, you never know.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With 10 billion applications <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110122/apple-hits-new-milestones-10-billion-apps-downloaded-160-million-ios-users-more/">downloaded to Apple&#8217;s mobile devices alone</a>, there needs to be a reliable way to monetize that traffic.</p>
<p>But there could be a problem: Fat fingers.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2065" title="bigthumb" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/bigthumb-183x300.jpg" alt="" width="183" height="300" />According to a survey released today, 47 percent of mobile app users say they click or tap on mobile ads more often by mistake than they do on purpose.</p>
<p>Accidental clicks obviously come with the territory. Today&#8217;s smartphones often have large displays, but it&#8217;s still to easy to accidentally click on a banner instead of a link.</p>
<p>In fact, screen limitations led Steve Jobs to criticize seven-inch tablet screens recently (vs. the iPad&#8217;s nine-inch screen), by saying users will have to file down their fingers to achieve ultimate accuracy.</p>
<p>Apple is only one of many companies that are investing heavily in mobile with the hopes that it will produce the next big advertising goldmine. While filing down fingertips isn&#8217;t a practical solution, there is a way to avoid spending on clumsy clicks.</p>
<p>To do so, advertisers are increasingly paying for mobile ads based on action, like a user providing an email address or watching a video. The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of <a href="http://www.pontiflex.com/">Pontiflex</a>, which is pitching its own solution for this problem.</p>
<p>It measures advertising through what it calls &#8220;cost per lead,&#8221; meaning advertisers don&#8217;t pay until users sign up and share their contact information.</p>
<p><strong>Other findings from the survey:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>The vast majority of apps that are downloaded are free&#8211;95 percent of mobile app users download free apps, while only 41 percent pay.</li>
<li>71 percent of mobile app users said they prefer ads that keep them within the app they are using, instead of ads that take them to the browser.</li>
<li>96 percent of mobile app users with a household income of $75,000 or greater said they use free apps.</li>
<li>Almost two-thirds of mobile app users selected ads that contain coupons, deals or newsletters as their preferred in-app mobile ad type.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A billion here, a billion there and pretty soon you are talking serious money.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the conclusion from a new Gartner forecast that predicts mobile apps will produce $15 billion in revenue from sales and advertising this year&#8211;nearly triple last year&#8217;s still-not-shabby $5.2 billion.<br />

&#8220;Many are wondering if the app frenzy we have been witnessing is just a fashion, and, like many others, it shall pass. We do not think so,&#8221; Gartner research director Stephanie Baghdassarian said in a statement. &#8220;We strongly believe there is a sizable opportunity for application stores in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company sees that revenue reaching a whopping $58 billion by 2014. (The forecast covers apps that are directly sold and not other kinds of media content such as ringtones and wallpapers.)</p>
<p>However, Baghdassarian noted that the challenge from Web-based apps will intensify as mobile browsers improve and the Web adapts to the growing base of Web-savvy phones.</p>
<p>&#8220;Applications will have to grow up and deliver a superior experience to the one that a Web-based app will be able to deliver,&#8221; Baghdassarian said. &#8220;Native apps will survive the Web enhancements only when they will provide a more-personal and richer experience to the ‘vanilla’ experience that a Web-based app will deliver.&#8221;</p>
<p>Advertising is poised to become a bigger piece of the revenue, Gartner said, climbing to nearly a third of revenue from apps by 2014, roughly double last year&#8217;s 16 percent.</p>
<p>Apple announced this week that <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110122/apple-hits-new-milestones-10-billion-apps-downloaded-160-million-ios-users-more/">10 billion iPhone apps had been downloaded</a> from its store. Apple&#8217;s lead in the store arena is poised to continue, but narrow in the coming years, Gartner said.</p>
<p>&#8220;We estimate that Apple&#8217;s App Store drove close to nine application downloads out of 10 in 2010 and will remain the single best-selling store across our forecast period (through 2014), although to a lesser extent, as other stores manage to gain momentum,&#8221; said Gartner Vice President Carolina Milanesi.</p>

Now that number has jumped to <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110122/apple-hits-new-milestones-10-billion-apps-downloaded-160-million-ios-users-more/">10 billion</a>.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s an astonishing jump, and it speaks volumes about the growth, and usage, of Apple&#8217;s iTunes/iPhone/iPad/iPod ecosystem.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s harder to figure out what it means for Apple&#8217;s financials, but we can guess: Not nearly as much.</p>
<p>App downloads increased 233 percent in the last year. But revenue growth at the iTunes store, which distributes them, is much more modest.</p>
<p>In Apple&#8217;s last fiscal year, which ran up to Sept. 25, 2010, iTunes revenue grew roughly <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=107357&amp;p=irol-SECText&amp;TEXT=aHR0cDovL2lyLmludC53ZXN0bGF3YnVzaW5lc3MuY29tL2RvY3VtZW50L3YxLzAwMDExOTMxMjUtMTAtMjM4MDQ0L3htbA%3d%3d">23 percent</a>. During <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110118/apple-earnings-insanely-great/">Apple&#8217;s most recent quarter</a>, iTunes revenue grew <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=107357&amp;p=irol-SECText&amp;TEXT=aHR0cDovL2lyLmludC53ZXN0bGF3YnVzaW5lc3MuY29tL2RvY3VtZW50L3YxLzAwMDExOTMxMjUtMTEtMDEwMTQ0L3htbA%3d%3d">at the same rate</a>.</p>
<p>Apple also sells music and videos, and now books via iTunes as well, but doesn&#8217;t provide any breakdown by category, so anything beyond those stats is guesswork. (And even getting to iTunes revenue numbers requires a small leap of faith*.)</p>
<p>But for what it&#8217;s worth, I&#8217;m assuming that revenue from apps is increasing at a faster clip than the numbers above suggest. Because digital music sales, which used to power iTunes sales, <a href="http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/20/report-digital-music-sales-starting-to-slow/">are</a> <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100409/musics-digital-sales-boom-comes-to-an-end/">slowing</a>.</p>
<p>In any case, it shouldn&#8217;t be a huge shock to see that big app-download numbers don&#8217;t translate into big dollars for Apple, since <a href="http://www.quora.com/What-percentage-of-apps-downloaded-in-the-apple-app-store-are-free">the majority of app downloads are free.</a></p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s a good reminder that Apple has always maintained it&#8217;s not trying to make money with the iTunes store&#8211;it&#8217;s a &#8220;<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100225/apple-billions-of-songs-billions-of-apps-not-much-profit/">bit over break-even</a>,&#8221; CFO Peter Oppenheimer said last year.</p>
<p>iTunes&#8217; real job is to give people more reasons to buy Apple&#8217;s hardware. And that&#8217;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110120/with-ipad-sales-steve-schools-the-street-again/">working out very well</a> indeed.</p>
<p>*iTunes revenue requires a bit of guesswork, because Apple doesn&#8217;t usually break out the store&#8217;s numbers, but lumps them into a &#8220;music related products and services&#8221; category, which includes accessories, etc. But the vast majority of that total comes from iTunes. And in the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110118/apple-earnings-insanely-great/">last quarter</a>, Apple gave us something much closer to a real iTunes number: &#8220;<a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/247197-apple-management-discusses-f1q11-results-earnings-call-transcript">revenue exceeding $1.1 billion</a>.&#8221; FYI: That works out to about 77 percent of Apple&#8217;s &#8220;music-related products&#8221; number for that quarter.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nintendo announced the pricing and release date today for the 3DS, which it hopes will rejuvenate sales as its other hardware platforms start aging.</p>
<p>The 3DS will be available in the U.S. on March 27 for a competitively priced $249.99. The handheld game player&#8217;s big selling point is that it offers 3-D without the need for special glasses. The device will come in Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue. Prices will vary outside the U.S.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1744" title="Nintendo_3DS_Aqua_Blue" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Nintendo_3DS_Aqua_Blue_webready-275x275.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="275" />At an event today in New York, Nintendo revealed more of the device&#8217;s capabilities, and many of them sound like features found on the iPhone and many other smartphones.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s ability to turn its MP3 players and phones into portable gaming devices has been a competitive threat to Nintendo, which with the 3DS release looks like it is willing to recognize.</p>
<p>For example, the new 3DS has an online store, called the eShop, where users will be able to download games. It also has three cameras and a built-in gyro, so the device can be tilted and turned to affect game play. It will also have location-based features, where users can elect to receive new content from Nintendo or other 3DS users as they travel around. The feature can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots when in sleep mode to collect this content or to function as a pedometer, which counts a user&#8217;s steps.</p>
<p>Additionally, users can take pictures with the camera, or listen to music and surf the Web on an Internet browser, which will come soon in a system upgrade. Users will also be able to play with one another by exchanging a simple code. About 30 games are expected to be available by June for the device.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s some of these more nuanced features that could make the device more competitive, but it&#8217;s the 3-D interactivity that Nintendo is really pushing, and so far consumers have not gravitated to 3-D as a reason to upgrade a TV, so it&#8217;s unclear whether it will be a draw for the 3DS.</p>
<p>Nintendo&#8217;s enthusiasm for 3-D also suffered a blow when it issued a warning that it is not healthy for kids under the age of 6 to view 3-D images. Nintendo says the impact from that should be minimal because the 3-D effect can be ratcheted up or down, and even turned off completely.</p>

<p>GameStop is expanding from primarily selling games in retail stores found in malls around America to a digital strategy that includes a new mobile component starting today.</p>
<p>The announcement expected today is timed with the release of its new Android application, which will let users of Google&#8217;s operating system download hundreds of games for free to either their phone or tablet.</p>
<p>In an interview, GameStop President Tony Bartel said: &#8220;The console continues to be a growth business, but it’s also exploding outside of console. It’s moving to anywhere people have a device that’s capable of reaching the Internet&#8211;if that’s a smartphone, or one of the 50 tablets that we saw at CES. Our gaming strategy is anytime, anywhere on any device.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a relatively new concept for <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/">GameStop</a>, which jumped into the digital realm only following its acquisition of Kongregate six months ago.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.kongregate.com/">Kongregate</a> operates an online gaming community that gives tools to game developers so they can add achievements, virtual goods and community aspects to their games.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1709" title="kongregate_arcade_phone" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/kongregate_arcade_phone-172x300.png" alt="" width="172" height="300" />The Android application will be called Kongregate Arcade, which will leverage those same experiences found online. The app will be available to users from the Android Market for free. Inside the game, users will be have access to 300 free games to start.</p>
<p>Traditionally, Kongregate makes money from in-game advertising and virtual goods sold. Its mobile app will be monetized through ads only.</p>
<p>Kongregate CEO Jim Greer said he thinks users will find it easier to discover new games on the Arcade app than on Android&#8217;s default market. &#8220;We see the discovery of games in Android marketplace as an issue. It&#8217;s hard to find titles and it&#8217;s not well curated,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We’ve learned a lot about making customized game recommendations to players based on what they&#8217;ve played and what their friends have played, and their ratings and game play styles.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition, he said the Android version will be linked to its PC version, allowing users to tap into the community they&#8217;ve already built, and earn achievements on both the phone and online.</p>
<p>GameStop plans to promote the application in its physical stores and leverage Kongregate&#8217;s 13 million monthly unique visitors on the PC to make it a hit. Already, Greer says, Android users are the most likely to visit the company&#8217;s mobile Web site.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Kongregate has created the experience in Adobe&#8217;s Flash Player, meaning that even if Apple allowed it, it would not work on the iPhone because Apple doesn&#8217;t support Flash. Likewise, it will only work on Android phones that support Flash&#8211;that is, phones with version 2.2 or higher.</p>
<p>GameStop will be competing against other companies, such as Aurora Feint&#8217;s <a href="http://openfeint.com/">OpenFeint game network</a>, which claims to have 3,400 games and 55 million users across Apple and Android. In a way, GameStop will also go head-to-head with one of its more traditional competitors, Amazon.com, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110111/amazons-android-appstore-will-lean-heavily-on-e-commerce-mechanics/">which is preparing to release an Android app store that also aims to solve the discovery problem</a>.</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer browser is still the world&#8217;s most popular, but its dominance is being steadily eroded by competition from Mozilla, Google and Apple. Can a new, aggressive approach to privacy change that? Can Microsoft really protect users from tracking across the Web&#8211;and do users really care?</p>
<p>Dean Hachamovitch, who oversees IE for Microsoft as a corporate VP, gives Walt Mossberg an update on the browser wars.</p>
<p>Greetings! We&#8217;ll be starting shortly. If you were in the room right now with our select crowd, you would have just heard some Aerosmith. <p>An update on the state of the ATD empire, which is getting much bigger.</p>
<p>Walt brings on Dean Hachamovitch.</p>
<p>Dean, by the way, is wearing a black long-sleeve shirt that says &#8220;private&#8221; in big white letters. Hope someone asks him about it.</p>
<p>Ah, and Dean has a &#8220;private&#8221; shirt for Walt, too. We&#8217;ll get to privacy in a bit, it seems.</p>
<p>DEAN: Working on IE 9, in beta, downloaded over 20 million times. Most important is its performance. It&#8217;s amazingly fast. Also, it blurs the boundary between Web sites and apps. And also, some talk about privacy.</p>
<p>WALT: Okay, that was a nice ad. But please talk about reports that you&#8217;ve been eclipsed in Europe by Firefox.</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes, we used to have 90 percent market share back in the &#8217;90s. But now we look at how many people choose to use our most recent versions. &#8220;We are delighted that IE 6 market share is going down. We are delighted that IE 7 market share is going down.&#8221;</p>
<p>DEAN: And bear in mind how much the Internet is growing. &#8220;There are a lot of different factors. It&#8217;s a very complex situation.&#8221;</p>
<p>WALT: Okay, on to privacy. Safari used to have some kind of privacy feature, but that&#8217;s old. Then in IE 8, you introduced a new feature, not by default, which tried to extend that protection to other sites on the Web you traveled to.</p>

<p>DEAN: You were describing &#8220;over the shoulder privacy.&#8221; But we&#8217;re also concerned about tracking. There are two kinds of tracking: &#8220;Expected tracking&#8221; and &#8220;creepy stalking.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pandora and Amazon are expected tracking. You want them to know what you&#8217;re doing. But the important thing is that you have visibility and control, and you get benefits.</p>
<p>For instance, when I go to Amazon, they know that I bought Spice Girls and Fergie, and they tell me other stuff I should get.</p>
<p>WALT: Some of that tracking isn&#8217;t sophisticated enough.</p>
<p>DEAN: Anyway, creepy stalking is bad. Because consumers aren&#8217;t aware of what&#8217;s going on, and they don&#8217;t have control of it.</p>
<p>WALT: We don&#8217;t allow slides at our conferences usually, but we&#8217;re going to make an exception. Please show us some slides!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Dean is showing people a monitor that shows you what cookies were attached to a certain NPR page, which includes tracking info that comes from Facebook integration.</p>
<p>Now a Fox News page with similar info.</p>
<p>A reminder that cookies, by the way, aren&#8217;t the only tracking info involved here. Also pixels, etc.</p>
<p>But even once you root around and look at the pixels and tracking info, you might not really understand what you&#8217;re looking at or who is behind them.</p>
<p>WALT: Microsoft is a big Internet advertiser and publisher. Don&#8217;t you do some of this stuff?</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes, and in addition to us and Google, etc, there is an amazing ecosystem of information brokers. There&#8217;s a huge industry around this.</p>
<p>WALT: So what&#8217;s coming?</p>
<p>DEAN: With the new rev of IE 9, first quarter of 2011, you&#8217;ll be able to &#8220;go to a Web page, click on a button and you&#8217;ll be protected from tracking.&#8221; Any Web page can do this.</p>
<p>It will block content on that page. It will be an open publishing platform.</p>
<p>WALT: Why would a publisher want to do this? They have a legitmate need to want to know things about you, to serve you better ads, right?</p>
<p>DEAN: We have a lot of interest from a lot of different organizations that want to make lists. Publishers, government agencies, consumer advocacy, etc.</p>
<p>WALT: So, I have to download a list from someone I trust to make this work. Will you maintain this list?</p>
<p>DEAN: No. People will find these lists the same way that they find other things on the Web they like. From Facebook, or friends, or wherever.</p>
<p>We think it&#8217;s important to have people exercise judgment in making these lists. The most important thing is that you go off to the Web and find one you have confidence in.</p>
<p>WALT: But why do I have to hope that I go to sites that have these buttons?</p>
<p>WALT and DEAN are trying to explain how the list and button combination will work. Frankly, I&#8217;m confused. We&#8217;ll have to circle back to this.</p>
<p>WALT: A cynical journalist might suggest that you&#8217;re embracing privacy and wearing a shirt because Firefox et al are eating your lunch.</p>

<p>DEAN: Paying Windows customers want a great experience that includes privacy, including through their browser. But another way to view people who use browsers is that they&#8217;re objects to be boxed and sold. We don&#8217;t believe that. We believe Windows customers should have a great experience with their browser.</p>
<p>WALT: As opposed to?</p>
<p>DEAN: Well, Chrome, for instance, is funded by advertising.</p>
<p>WALT: So is The Wall Street Journal.</p>
<p>DEAN: I think advertising is great. But be careful about connecting advertising with tracking. We have advertising customers, and we want them to be delighted. And we have Windows customers, and we want them to be delighted. We have a unique position on this that gives us an opporunity to lead.</p>
<p>WALT: All the other browsers have a privacy mode.</p>
<p>DEAN: But that&#8217;s for &#8220;over the shoulder&#8221; privacy, not tracking.</p>
<p>WALT: Some of this tracking stuff is very hard to block. Can you really protect a user from all of it?</p>
<p>DEAN: Good question. Flash, for instance, enables tracking &#8220;Flash cookies&#8221; and they&#8217;re inherent in Flash. Only way to turn them off is to turn Flash off.</p>
<p>WALT: So this won&#8217;t block Flash cookies?</p>
<p>DEAN: It will if you tell it to.</p>
<p>WALT: But that&#8217;s pretty extreme.</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes. We&#8217;re touching on the ambiguity to the consumer about what actually is important and worthwhile tracking, and what isn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>We want to help consumers make progress being in control, but it&#8217;s a work in progress. It&#8217;s happening in Berkeley and in Brussels.</p>
<p>WALT: Let&#8217;s switch gears. Some people, not mainstream people, are debating whether the future of entertainment and progress and productivity will be on the browser and in the cloud. Google is pushing that via Chrome OS, and they also have Android apps that store local cloud on the device. Where do you come down on that?</p>
<p>DEAN: It&#8217;s a great case of &#8220;and&#8221;&#8211;you&#8217;ll have local apps and cloud versions. Like with Office mail, etc. We&#8217;re doing work on speed and safety so you can feel more comfortable in the cloud. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s the best of both worlds.&#8221;</p>
<p>WALT: So not a religious issue? Just practicality?</p>
<p>DEAN: Yes.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>
<p><strong>Q: What do you think of what the FTC says about privacy?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: The paper they put out in December is a good framework. And they&#8217;ve responded positively to what we&#8217;ve put out. They&#8217;re in favor of self-regulation, and we&#8217;re eager to work with them. I&#8217;ve had conversations with them, and what they say makes sense.</p>
<p>WALT: You&#8217;ve been talking to competitors about working together on this?</p>
<p>DEAN: We&#8217;ve been talking across the industry.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Who is supposed to make banking, etc., more secure? This isn&#8217;t just about someone saying something on Facebook, but opening up the wrong window and having your bank account drained.</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: We take it very seriously. &#8220;Security is an industry issue. I have to say it that way, because anything that we can talk about here has multiple parties involved.&#8221; if your Facebook is hacked, was it using your banking password?</p>
<p><strong>Q: I&#8217;m talking about a national security issue.</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: There&#8217;s a lot of working going on within the industry, working with law enformecement, to make things more secure.</p>
<p>WALT: But since you have the biggest market share, there&#8217;s a lot of responsibility on you. What do you do about that?</p>
<p>DEAN: Well, one thing we do is put out updates every eight weeks, because things change.</p>
<p>But really, &#8220;the best thing you can do to remain secure is to keep all your bits updated&#8230;.That would make such a  difference.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Q: Firefox has plug-ins like AdBlock, that let you block ads. They seem to be effective at blocking things like beacons, too. Are they effective and can you do something analogous?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: Add-ins require installation, etc. You need a list, too. But we&#8217;re building that functionality into IE, so you don&#8217;t need to download anything else. We&#8217;re also working with people who make lists for AdBlock Plus, and they&#8217;re eager to work with IE 9 as well.</p>
<p>WALT: But AdBlock blocks ads, too. You&#8217;re not going to do that, right?</p>
<p>DEAN: It comes down to the list. If a list author lists sites that involve ads, then they&#8217;ll go away, too.</p>
<p>WALT: So you could surf the Web without seeing ads?</p>
<p>DEAN: It depends on the list.</p>
<p>WALT: I do think ads are good, by the way. [Me too!]</p>
<p>DEAN: Right. &#8220;Ads are great!&#8221;</p>
<p>But this is one of the reasons the ad industry wants to create lists for this. So they can distinguish tracking from nontracking.</p>
<p><strong>Q: You&#8217;ve been talking about desktop browsers. Will these features come to mobile as well?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: &#8220;We&#8217;ll be talking about our mobile browser very soon, and I&#8217;ll just smile, and you can infer from that.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: How much more value does tracking really add to advertising?</strong></p>
<p>DEAN: Hard for me to answer that. Maybe the next time you have one of these things, you could have someone from the ad industry.</p>

<p>And if you don&#8217;t want to invest that much time, here&#8217;s the super-short version: Head to a pirate review site like <a href="http://www.scnsrc.net/category/films/">Scenesource</a>, look for any movie you want and then look in the comments for links to cloud-based storage lockers where you can grab a copy of the movie, for free.</p>
<p>You may have to try a couple of links, because they eventually get shut down, but it should still be very easy&#8211;and more comfortable for mainstream users than dealing with BitTorrent software, which has been the preferred piracy method for some time.</p>
<p>Greenfield&#8217;s<a href="http://www.btigresearch.com/2011/01/07/ip-enabled-tvs-hot-topic-at-ces-but-are-they-opening-pandoras-box-to-piracy-watch-our-piracy-demo/"> larger point</a> (registration required) is that the rise of Internet-connected TVs&#8211;look around this year&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show and you&#8217;ll realize that the next set you buy will almost certainly have a Web connection, whether you want it or not&#8211;and cheap bandwidth is going to create a giant headache for big media.</p>
<p>Big media and technology companies can try to fight it with legal and mechanical tactics, or half-steps like <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110106/maybe-ultraviolet-the-ginormous-media-cloud-locker-thingwont-fail-after-all-what-do-you-say-steve-jobs/">UltraViolet, the &#8220;everybody but Apple&#8221; coalition</a>. But the best long-term answer is to make media consumption incredibly cheap, and incredibly easy, so that it&#8217;s more convenient for mainstream users to get it legally than to go through the pirate sites.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s an incredibly hard thing to do, because it involves trading big, existing revenue streams for smaller ones down the line. But not doing it can be even more costly: Ask the music labels.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As Mobilized told you last month, T-Mobile is indeed using the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/d/ces-2011/">Consumer Electronics Show</a> to <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101223/t-mobiles-ces-plans-lots-of-android-some-tablets-and-a-faster-network/">announce its plans for a faster version of its existing HSPA+ network</a>.<br />

The company demonstrated the network during a press event on Thursday and said that it expects 140 million Americans in 25 metro areas to have access to its HSPA+42 network by mid-2011. The demo included downloading of individual songs from Amazon in as few as five seconds.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our network will continue to keep pace with the growing demand,&#8221; said T-Mobile CEO Phillip Humm, who said the company is embracing its status as a challenger brand (marketing speak for &#8220;the little guy&#8221;).</p>
<p>T-Mobile used a press conference on Thursday to announce the network and <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/tablets-flying-fast-and-furious-at-ces/">show off the LG-built G-Slate tablet</a> that it plans to introduce in the first half of the year. T-Mobile also said it expects to offer a 7-inch Dell Streak tablet in the coming weeks.The Streak has a dual-core Nvidia Tegra processor along with support for Adobe Flash and a Gorilla Glass screen. T-Mobile said it will be sold at a &#8220;consumer-friendly price,&#8221; but didn&#8217;t share details.</p>
<p>Humm told reporters that the company has now sold 900,000 devices that run on its HSPA+ network, which it bills as America&#8217;s largest 4G network.</p>
<p>“This proves the rapid adoption,“ Humm said, adding that the carrier expects to be offering more than 25 4G devices by the end of the year, ranging from smartphones to mobile broadband.</p>
<p>T-Mobile Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray showed a slide that he says shows that HSPA+ has a strong road map to get faster in the coming years, though he said that T-Mobile does believe in moving to LTE in the future when the time is right. (T-Mobile currently lacks the spectrum to build such a network, among other issues.)</p>
<p>Ray said that T-Mobile has been testing T-Mobile&#8217;s new HSPA+42 network in Las Vegas and said its average speeds are on par with those provided by Verizon&#8217;s LTE network, even before that network has much load on it.</p>

<p>However, even with the masses descending upon Las Vegas this week, Cricket has decided to delay the Muve music service and the launch of its first Muve-compatible phone.<br />

Cricket had hoped to launch service in Las Vegas this week along with a number of other markets later this month.</p>
<p>Under its revised time frame, Cricket plans to launch the service in Las Vegas later this month, add nine more cities in February and roll it out to the rest of its markets this spring.</p>
<p>Although all the necessary licensing is in place, Cricket spokesman Greg Lund said that the company needed the extra time to ensure all of the software bugs were ironed out before it started asking customers to pay for the service.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s got to be just perfect,&#8221; Lund told Mobilized in an interview at CES in Las Vegas.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1870" title="RunKeeperPro" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/RunKeeperPro.png" alt="" width="130" height="242" /><a href="http://runkeeper.com/">FitnessKeeper</a>, the mobile fitness app maker for the iPhone and Android, has found a variety of ways to get its users to pay to track their runs, bike rides and other activities using GPS. It offers a RunKeeper Pro app for $9.99, with premium features such as audio cues and interval training; an Elite subscription service for $19.99 per year that allows users to live-broadcast their activities and get reports on their progress; and specific training programs (usually $9.99 each for non-members).</p>
<p>Confused by all those options? There&#8217;s also a basic RunKeeper app that has enough tracking and reporting features for many users and has always been free. I wrote recently about <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101130/everything-will-be-social-and-that-includes-sweating/">its social features</a>.</p>
<p>Apple recently said RunKeeper Pro was one of its top-grossing apps of 2010. FitnessKeeper, a small Boston-based start-up that just raised $1.1 million in funding, wouldn&#8217;t disclose revenue or download numbers, but said it has been cash-flow positive every month since it was founded two-and-a-half years ago.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1873" title="Top Free Apps" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Screen-shot-2010-12-31-at-11.34.45-AM-275x84.png" alt="" width="275" height="84" />The company announced this week it would take down one part of its pay barrier from now through the end of January, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101130/everything-will-be-social-and-that-includes-sweating/">giving away RunKeeper Pro for free</a> during New Year&#8217;s resolution season.</p>
<p>Launched yesterday on iPhone, that promotion has already been highly successful, with 171,000 RunKeeper Pro downloads yesterday on the iPhone, more than 10 times as many as it gets in a normal day. The app is currently quickly climbing the Apple App Store charts, now at No. 5 in the free app category (it was No. 12 this morning). The promotion is also launching on Android this afternoon.</p>
<p>And as of this writing, it&#8217;s only New Year&#8217;s resolution time in about half the world.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ask.com is in the process of reformulating itself, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101109/ask-adds-to-consensus-social-is-the-way-to-compete-with-google/">having dropped its algorithmic search offering</a> and laid off 150 employees in November. The company is billing the changes, which came after a community Q&amp;A launch in July, as a return to its &#8220;Ask Jeeves&#8221; question-answering roots.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1681" title="Ask iPhone" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Ask-iPhone-201x300.png" alt="" width="201" height="300" />I recently had a chance to sit down with Ask.com President Doug Leeds, who was particularly high on the company&#8217;s efforts in mobile: A new iPhone app that includes the Q&amp;A feature has been downloaded 250,000 times since being released in November.</p>
<p>(It might be premature to say mobile is the future of Ask, considering it has yet to launch apps on other mobile platforms.)</p>
<p>Refocusing Ask around Q&amp;A on both the Web and mobile has already had an impact, even if it&#8217;s not fully rolled out. Leeds said 60 percent of Ask queries are in the form of a question now, up from 28 percent last year.</p>
<p>Questions are more monetizable than queries, he attested, because users stay on an Ask.com page rather than clicking to zoom off elsewhere on the Web. Ask has found that users who have their questions answered are 50 percent more likely to click on an ad.</p>
<p>Social search offers Ask.com a way to differentiate itself from the competition. Leeds said the company&#8217;s brand has long been a second-choice search engine: A huge percentage of Ask users go to Ask after Google fails to answer their query. That may not sound like something to brag about, but it&#8217;s made the company profitable, with consistent traffic as the sixth-largest U.S. site, at 90 million monthly visitors.</p>
<p>Ask <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/story/10939398/iac-cfo-we-might-sell-askcom-in-pieces.html">doesn&#8217;t seem to get a lot of love</a> within the halls of its owner, IAC, so it&#8217;s especially important for the company to grow its revenue, if not its traffic. Ask is hiring back 30 of the 150 positions it cut, for a total of 270 employees, said Leeds, who described the layoffs as a removal of satellite offices in order to consolidate operations at its Oakland, Calif., headquarters.</p>
<p>Leeds said that Ask has found social search works especially well on mobile, where, for instance, users can ask a question verbally using the free Ask.com iPhone app with speech recognition, put the phone back in their pocket and wait for a notification saying that a real person has answered the question.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1687" title="DougLeeds" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/DougLeeds-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />The median answer time for questions posed to the Ask community is approaching five minutes. That&#8217;s eons in search time, but the fact that the answer is created within those five minutes matters, said Leeds.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/right-here-right-now-when-it-comes-to-questions-mobile-trumps-the-desktop-111913089.html">a Harris Interactive survey of mobile users sponsored by Ask</a>, 66 percent of respondents said timeliness matters more when they&#8217;re not in front of their computer, and 40 percent of smartphone users said they&#8217;re more influenced by users&#8217; opinions given within the last 24 hours than those from a month ago.</p>
<p>To be clear, Ask has not completely converted to social. Only 20 percent of visits are currently exposed to community Q&amp;A, and only after users say they want to ask a question or a search has failed to produce results. That&#8217;s because Ask doesn&#8217;t want to overtax its human question answerers, said Leeds. The majority of Ask user questions are answered through a machine process of extracting information from multiple Web pages (similar to the word definitions, flight status information and real-time weather you&#8217;ll get at the top of the search results page if you look for such things on Google or Bing).</p>
<p>To recruit and retain question answerers, Ask has a promotion going where it donates 10 cents per answer to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. &#8220;Altruism is the best incentive,&#8221; said Leeds. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want it to be a game; we want it to be useful.&#8221; Today, 65 percent of questions asked through community Q&amp;A get accurately routed to an answerer.</p>
<p>Next for Ask is a &#8220;nearby&#8221; feature of its iPhone app that will launch early next year. The ideal question, said Leeds, would be &#8220;Why is there a crowd over there?&#8221; Or users could ask about the current state of traffic on roads, crowding in a particular restaurant or whether they should be worried about that smoke they&#8217;re smelling in the air. Of course, for this to work well, Ask will need much deeper penetration than 250,000 iPhone users.</p>
<p>As it tries to get social, another limitation for Ask is it doesn&#8217;t have much of an existing membership system. Unlike, say, Yahoo, where users are virtually always logged in, Ask has never had a portfolio of products, just search. The company introduced a revamped log-in system in July, but it will have to get many more users to sign in before it can make use of personalization, social connections and network effects to get questions answered. (Hmm&#8230;isn&#8217;t this what Facebook Connect does?)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bundling a music subscription into other goods and services has been tried a lot, mostly without success. However, Cricket Wireless is hoping to succeed where others have failed.</p>
<p>The company, best known for its prepaid phones, is offering a new service called Muve Music, which includes the cost of unlimited music downloads as part of a $55 monthly cellphone plan that also includes unlimited talk, text and Web. Basically, Muve adds about $10 to the cost of the monthly cellphone tab (which, incidentally, is about what one can expect to pay for the typical subscription music service).</p>

<p>The music is downloaded directly to the cellphone and is accessible as long as you remain a subscriber. From a technology standpoint, the service works by transferring the music to a secure partition of a 4GB digital memory card in the phone; Cricket says that partition can hold about 3,000 songs.</p>
<p>Cricket is launching the service next month with a single compatible phone&#8211;a color touchscreen feature phone known as the Samsung Suede, which will sell for $199. The service will first be available Jan. 6 in Las Vegas, with about 10 of Cricket&#8217;s other markets due to come on board later in the month.</p>
<p>What makes the service interesting is the approach&#8211;there is no tie to a PC whatsoever. Music comes to the phone, lives on the phone and is managed on the phone. In an interview, Cricket Vice President Jeff Toig said the service is geared to Cricket&#8217;s base of customers, many of whom don&#8217;t have a PC and broadband connection. It also allows them to get their music the way they do their other cellphone services&#8211;by paying in cash at the company&#8217;s retail outlets, thereby eliminating the need for a credit card.</p>
<p>The downside, of course, is that the music can only be played on the phone, though the phone can connect to a car stereo or external speakers over bluetooth or via a 3.5mm cable.</p>
<p>On the plus side, Muve doesn&#8217;t add much to the cost of a cellphone plan and eliminates some of the complexity traditionally associated with digital music. In addition to the ability to download and play tracks from all four major music labels, Muve subscribers can set any track to be either a ringtone or ringback tone (the music heard by callers while they are waiting for someone to answer). </p>
<p>Nokia tried a somewhat similar approach <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10055680-1.html">with its &#8220;Comes With Music&#8221; phones</a>, which debuted in 2008. In that program, the cost of the music subscription was included in the price of the phone rather than in the monthly cellphone bill. Others, such as SpiralFrog, have tried to create services relying on advertising to subsidize the cost of providing music free to the end user.</p>
<p>Toig said that his customer base is one that typically isn&#8217;t downloading music from iTunes at 99 cents a pop, but includes a fair number of people that illegally download music from file sharing services.</p>
<p>The new service, he said, allows them to have a better experience without having to spend much more than they already are, while giving the record industry a chance to reach digital music customers they are largely missing out on today.</p>
<p>Unlike other services, which Toig said bank on the fact that people have access to a computer, Muve tries to make it easy to discover and download music directly from the phone. Customers can subscribe to curated feeds of music that get automatically updated, as well as find and download albums by name. A built-in social network allows them to see what their friends are listening to (assuming they also have a Muve-compatible phone).</p>
<p>&#8220;Nobody has done mobile music right,&#8221; Toig said.</p>
<p>Cricket won&#8217;t say how much of the incremental $10 in monthly revenue it is getting goes to the labels, but Toig said part of the bet is that Cricket will be able to reach customers that it otherwise could not.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously not doing this for a few percent,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We think this has appeal beyond our base to segments Cricket has not appealed to before.&#8221;</p>
