<p>In a three-story building in Palo Alto, Calif. &#8212; formerly occupied by Danger, the developer behind the T-Mobile Sidekick &#8212; Groupon has been trying to build out a Silicon Valley technology center, one acquisition at a time.</p>
<p>The pursuit was kicked off two years ago with the purchase of mobile app development shop Mob.ly. Mihir Shah, the company&#8217;s CEO, started recruiting for the social buying company, and then became the Groupon&#8217;s VP of mobile.</p>
<p>Since then, there has been a hodgepodge of acquisitions, including <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111228/groupon-acquires-campfire-labs-to-jumpstart-social-products/">Campfire</a>, which builds chat, calendar and media-sharing tools, as well as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110726/groupon-buys-zappedy-for-10-3-million/">Zappedy</a>, which makes a platform for merchants to redeem Internet-based offers more easily. </p>
<p>Last week, it continued with Adku, a low-profile San Francisco start-up that helps e-commerce retailers fine-tune their recommendation engines using external factors, such as whether it is hot or cold outside.</p>

<p>None of the teams have been extremely big or expensive, but Groupon insists that they already are having a major impact on the company.</p>
<p>That may be hard to believe in a company of more than 10,000 employees, most of which are salespeople who are not working on technology.</p>
<p>But Adku&#8217;s co-founder Carlos Whitt, who is joining the company along with five others from his team, said the entrepreneurial vibe in the building is &#8220;ridiculously exciting.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The opportunity, the innovation and entrepreneurs are all there,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a good intersection.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, Groupon has not been able to attract every entrepreneur it pursues. It had been actively <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111228/groupon-acquires-campfire-labs-to-jumpstart-social-products/">trying to buy other social start-ups</a>, such as Gowalla. That particular deal <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111205/yup-its-an-acqhire-facebook-gets-gowalla-for-its-people/">went to Facebook</a>. Another would-be Groupon acquisition target, Clever Sense, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111213/google-buys-alfred-restaurant-recommendation-app-for-local-team/">was won by Google</a>.</p>

<p>No matter, according to Mob.ly&#8217;s Shah, who said Groupon is actively evolving beyond a daily deals service into a company that builds a set of key marketing tools for local merchants that increases sales, cuts costs and boosts productivity.</p>
<p>Some of the early tools include online calendars to make it easy for spas or gyms to book appointments online, and rewards programs that allow merchants to identify loyal customers who return and spend a lot of money.</p>
<p>Groupon also recently revamped its merchant center, where its customers can manage their daily deals and other programs in an online dashboard.</p>
<p>Shah said the idea is to create a marketing suite that makes small businesses more efficient and productive.</p>
<p>&#8220;We never want to stand still and be a big company,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But the big question is whether those tools will be sticky enough to keep merchants coming back to offer new deals, which is where Groupon gets all of its revenue from. That&#8217;s because most of the new tools are expected to be given away for free and not generate any additional income &#8212; at least for now.</p>

<p>It will also have to be enough to keep away other close competitors, such as LivingSocial, Google and Amazon.</p>
<p>The ability to spur innovation and keep ahead of rivals will be on the minds of analysts when Groupon reports its first financial results as a publicly held company this afternoon.</p>
<p>Wall Street is expecting the company to report three cents per share profit on revenue of $475 million in its fourth quarter earnings, according to Thomson Reuters.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s up from $430 million in revenues in the third quarter and will be Groupon&#8217;s first profitable quarter in nearly two years</p>
<p>In particular, analysts will be listening for updates on some of the company&#8217;s core programs, such as Groupon Now, which is its mobile product that allows consumers to purchase deals minutes or hours before redeeming them based on their location. Other metrics may be shared regarding loyalty and retention programs.</p>
<p>This is also Groupon CEO Andrew Mason&#8217;s first big chance to speak to the investment community since the end of the company&#8217;s quiet period (<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110927/the-groupon-conundrum-the-ipo-goes-on-but-when-will-the-drama-stop/">which he wasn&#8217;t really good at keeping, anyway</a>).</p>
<p>Groupon&#8217;s stock increased nearly three percent yesterday to close at $24.19, which is just above its IPO price of $20 a share.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[3-D isn't going away -- it's becoming just another check-off feature, as TV sets get "smarter."]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After years of flogging 3-D TVs at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, television makers are trying a different tactic.</p>
<p>For 2012, they are focusing on making TVs &#8220;smarter&#8221; by enabling them to connect to the Internet for apps and video services on the Web. </p>
<p>But that doesn&#8217;t mean 3-D is going away. It&#8217;s just riding shotgun with smart TVs.</p>
<p>Smart TV is not a new concept, of course. Up until now, it has been defined as Internet-connected television achieved through a separate box or device that connects to the TV and streams Internet content, or via a computer-like processor built directly into the TV. <img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/3DShotgun1-380x249.png" alt="" title="3DvsSmartTV" width="380" height="249" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-160633" /></p>
<p>On the showroom floor in Las Vegas next week, electronics makers including Samsung Electronics, Sony and LG Electronics are expected to show off more television sets that bring Internet connectivity to entertainment centers for the home. Yesterday, Google <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204331304577143143293165960.html?_nocache=1325862531712&#038;user=welcome">announced</a> that LG will join the list of companies supporting Google TV; Samsung, Sony, and Vizio Inc. have also adopted Google&#8217;s Internet TV technology.</p>
<p>With <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111207/what-if-apple-television-is-an-imac/">Apple rumored</a> to have a possible Internet-connected HDTV in the pipeline, TV makers are making all kinds of pushes to bring to market devices that offer consumers a full range of options. For many consumers, the answer for now will still be external devices that offer easy, upgradable solutions, like the Microsoft Xbox, Apple TV, Google TV and even <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120104/roku-to-launch-cordless-streaming-stick-for-smart-tvs/">Roku’s latest gadget</a>.</p>
<p>Analysts believe that Internet-enabled TVs will begin to take a larger share of the market by default, eventually becoming a check-off item for consumers, rather than a special feature. Some 60 percent of new televisions being sold in 2012 are expected to have Internet connectivity. According to NPD&#8217;s DisplaySearch, connected-TV shipments are expected to reach 138 million globally by 2015, accounting for 47 percent of all flat-panel TVs.</p>
<p>So where does 3-D fit into all this?</p>
<p>TV makers will still be touting 3-D at CES 2012, as many smart TVs will also include 3-D capabilities. Samsung Electronics, for instance, says that more than half of its 2012 TV models will support 3-D. “Our commitment to 3-D is only deepening,” says Ethan Raisel, director of communications at Samsung.</p>
<p>Tim Alessi, Director of New Product Development at LG, estimates that around 20 percent of all LG TV units will support 3-D, and notes that 3-D is featured in 50 percent of the company’s lineup for this year.</p>
<p>But despite the fact that 3-D TV sales in 2011 showed some encouraging gains &#8212; with an estimated 21.5 million 3-D units reported to have shipped last year and sales showing significant gains from quarter to quarter &#8212; the forced exuberance over three-dimensional screens has been tempered a bit.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s likely because it doesn&#8217;t matter how well 3-D TV units are selling &#8212; for the consumer, anyway. &#8220;It’s not really the penetration that matters, it’s the use,&#8221; says Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey. &#8220;You’d be hard pressed to find a 3-D TV owner that actually uses it in 3-D mode even once a week. That’s not a formula for building consumer momentum.&#8221;</p>
<p>For TV, 3-D presents a three-headed monster: To start, there are the technical and psychological obstacles of those pesky 3-D glasses &#8212; and while autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3-D technology is being worked on in many R&#038;D labs, industry experts all agree that quality 3-D without glasses is at least a few years away.</p>
<p>Secondly, 3-D presents a chicken-and-egg dilemma that doesn’t exist with smart-TV features &#8212; the question of where the viewable content will come from. Many content creators have been holding off on making 3-D programs. The Discovery Channel and ESPN made headlines two years ago when they announced 3-D channels; but in terms of sports, 3-D has been relegated to key events, due to high production costs. </p>
<p>An increasing number of 3-D movies are available on DVD, but moviemakers that hopped aboard the 3-D train early &#8212; think Pixar Animation Studios and DreamWorks Animation &#8212; were likely doing so to plant a flag in the ground for when 3-D finally does hit critical mass in the living room, says Scott Steinberg, head of strategic consulting firm TechSavvy.  </p>
<p>Sony Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer even <a href="ttp://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204224604577030192732123080.html">said recently</a>, regarding the company’s 3-D TV push, that he hadn’t realized all of the challenges in getting 3-D content in place.</p>
<p>And the third issue affecting the uptake of 3-D has been the cost of the sets. On average, the cost of 47-inch to 50-inch 3-D TV sets is $400 more than similar HDTVs, according to a 2011 report from Retrevo. And while the entire consumer electronics industry has been hurt by a weak U.S. economy, TV sales have been hit particularly hard. </p>
<p>Steinberg says that for the average American household, television purchasing is about being practical right now. “It’s much more important to have the maximum-value TV with Internet capabilities and apps, than to invest in a still-unproven technology like 3-D.”</p>
<p>A December 2011 report from Parks &#038; Associates on consumer purchasing intent also indicates that smart TVs are what&#8217;s grabbing the interest of consumers right now.  </p>
<p>Even that report points out that smart TVs won’t deliver the killer blow to 3-D. As smart TVs are punched up with even more features &#8212; from apps to motion remotes to voice-command capabilities &#8212; more middle-class households looking to purchase smart TVs may buy in to 3-D, whether they’re actively looking for it or not. </p>
<p>Whether consumers actually want to sit in their living rooms and wear 3-D glasses to watch TV remains to be seen. For now, TV makers will still insist that they do.</p>

And it wants customers to believe it will have stuff they want to watch, even though <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110901/starz-says-it-wont-renew-giant-netflix-deal/">it is losing some prize jewels</a>.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll forgive both groups if they&#8217;re a tad skeptical.</p>
<p>But if you feel like extending Reed Hastings the benefit of the doubt once more, then pay attention to <a href="http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/NFLX/1461564291x0x511277/85b155bc-69e8-4cb8-a2a3-22465e076d77/Investor%20Letter%20Q3%202011.pdf">the shareholder letter he published yesterday</a> &#8212; in particular, the part where he explains the company&#8217;s content strategy.</p>
<p>In the end, if Hastings does deliver, this is the plan that will let him do it. And it&#8217;s a change from the company&#8217;s original content strategy, which means some folks haven&#8217;t figured it out yet.</p>
<p>Short version: When Netflix was a DVD company, it could afford to offer just about every movie or TV show every made. Now that it&#8217;s a streaming video company, it has to pick and choose.</p>
<p>So Hastings is trying to build an $8-a-month version of HBO &#8212; a network you pay for in addition to your regular TV package, not one that replaces it. And to make that work, he doesn&#8217;t have to have everything &#8212; but he has to have stuff you can&#8217;t get anywhere else.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s an extended excerpt from his letter:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>In television&#8230; the networks (ABC, FX, etc.) have long relied upon exclusive content to differentiate among themselves. As video moves online, so too has this practice of exclusive content. HBO has an exclusive license to recent Universal movies that includes its online HBO GO, for example. Netflix has signed exclusive licenses for DreamWorks Animation, for Relativity, and others. In episodic television, exclusives are also the norm. Netflix doesn’t license “Deadwood” from HBO because they see strategic value in keeping it exclusive. Netflix licenses “Mad Men” and “House of Cards” exclusively for much the same reason.</p>
<p>…We don’t have to “beat” Starz or other networks to succeed&#8230;We won’t have every movie or TV series; but we do provide enough value that consumers also want to subscribe to Netflix.</p>
<p>Any given consumer will have only one of DirecTV or Comcast, say, for their video service. That is classic either‐or competition. But with premium television networks like Netflix, the more good experiences there are, the more consumers are willing to spend to have multiple channels from which to get enjoyment.</p></blockquote>
<p>Simple, right? The complicated part is the execution, of course. Hastings and his team have to figure out what their customers, and future customers, will value, and how much Hastings and his team can afford to pay for it.</p>
<p>And if they make the wrong calls &#8212; if it turns out that &#8220;<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110318/netflix-bets-big-on-house-of-cards-but-swears-its-not-a-radical-departure-qa-with-content-boss-ted-sarandos/">House of Cards</a>&#8221; isn&#8217;t interesting to anyone besides Kevin Spacey, or if the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110926/dreamworks-announces-netflix-deal/">DreamWorks movies</a> don&#8217;t satisfy people who used to watch the Pixar movies Netflix used to have &#8212; then Netflix really is toast.</p>
<p>But Hastings still has some 25 million subscribers, which means he still has plenty of money to keep betting &#8212; during his earnings call yesterday, he said the company&#8217;s content bill had shot up to $3.3 billion, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101027/those-bits-arent-free-netflix-could-be-racking-up-a-2-billion-content-tab/">up from $1.2 billion just a year ago</a>. That&#8217;s not enough to pay for an unlimited supply of videos. But it should be enough to build a decent pay TV channel.</p>

<p>The video rental company is reportedly finishing up a streaming rights deal with DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind &#8220;Shrek&#8221; and other animated hits. The contract would replace an existing pact with HBO.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/dreamworks-animation-netflix-finalizing-streaming-214776">The Hollywood Reporter</a> thinks the deal will kick in sometime in 2012, while <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-23/netflix-said-to-be-in-talks-on-streaming-rights-with-dreamworks-animation.html?cmpid=yhoo">Bloomberg</a> thinks it will be the beginning of 2012. In any case, this won&#8217;t be a flood of films &#8212; DreamWorks only produces a handful of movies a year.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also worth noting that it doesn&#8217;t appear that HBO tried too hard to hang on to the movies, as it&#8217;s letting DreamWorks out early of a deal that wasn&#8217;t set to expire till 2014.</p>
<p>Still, the deal has nice a bit of symbolism, since Netflix is increasingly lining up as a direct competitor with Time Warner&#8217;s pay TV service, despite <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110506/netflix-ceo-reed-hastings-swears-hes-not-going-to-kill-hbo-we-compete-like-football-and-baseball/">CEO Reed Hastings&#8217; insistence that this isn&#8217;t so</a>. And every big-name rights deal is helpful for Netflix, which is trying to convince both investors and consumers that it will have enough stuff in its digital catalog to pull off its move <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110713/reed-hastings-doesnt-want-you-to-pay-more-for-netflix-he-wants-you-to-stop-using-dvds/">from DVD-by-mail company to Web streaming company</a>.</p>
<p>Netflix shares are down more than seven percent from their all-time peak earlier this month, when it announced a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110712/netflix-tells-its-customers-to-ditch-their-dvds-or-pay-up/">60 percent pay hike for customers who wanted both DVDs and Web streaming</a>. But they&#8217;re still up by more than<a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=NFLX+Interactive#chart2:symbol=nflx;range=20110103,20110722;indicator=volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=on"> 50 percent since the beginning of the year</a>. The company reports Q2 earnings this afternoon.</p>

<p>Mr. Katzenberg&#8217;s comments follow Paramount&#8217;s announcement Wednesday that it will open its own animation division, pitting it against Walt Disney Co.&#8217;s Pixar Animation Studios and DreamWorks Animation.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-4137" title="JEFFREY KATZENBERG" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/JEFFREY-KATZENBERG1-275x182.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="182" />Katzenberg, who created the animation studio along with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen, marks the sixth board member of the privately held social games company, which earned a jaw-dropping profit of $400 million on $850 million in revenues last year.</p>
<p>Zynga&#8217;s CEO and Founder Mark Pincus made the announcement in a blog post today <a href="http://www.zynga.com/about/blog.php">on the company&#8217;s Web site</a>: &#8220;I knew he’d be a great fit for the board after he suggested that the blockbuster of 2011 could be ShrekVille.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pincus continued to joke that Katzenberg will help recruit a seventh member to the board (maybe Jack Black or Mike Myers?).</p>
<p>But more seriously, Katzenberg&#8217;s appointment signals Zynga&#8217;s desire to evolve from a well-recognized&#8211;and successful&#8211;Silicon Valley start-up to a large consumer brand name and entertainment company.</p>
<p>Social gaming on Facebook so far is in its infancy.</p>
<p>Zynga has been able to profit handsomely off no-name games, like FarmVille, CityVille and Mafia Wars. Critics argue that it will have to turn those franchises into brands as the market matures and gets inundated by well-recognized brands. That progression has already started to take shape with <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110330/electronic-arts-regains-major-league-baseball-license-for-facebook-game/">Electronic Arts&#8217; acquisition of Playfish</a> and what Disney has planned with its purchase of Playdom.</p>
<p>Having an answer to this question will be key as Zynga considers raising up to $250 million in capital, and positions itself for a potential IPO.</p>
<p>&#8220;DreamWorks Animation is a revolutionary technology company, a recognized consumer brand, and at its core, a media company. It’s easy to see the value that Jeffrey will add to Zynga as we grow and look for more ways to delight our players,&#8221; Pincus wrote.</p>

<p>Katzenberg can offer that outside perspective as the board&#8217;s only member not in Silicon Valley. He joins Pincus; Owen Van Natta, Zynga&#8217;s EVP of Business; Bing Gordon, partner at Kleiner Perkins; Brad Feld, managing director of Foundry Group; and Reid Hoffman, founder and chairman of LinkedIn.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The latest product placement in one of Zynga&#8217;s Facebook games comes from the upcoming animated feature &#8220;Rango,&#8221; featuring the voice of Johnny Depp.</p>
<p>The week-long campaign will appear in Zynga&#8217;s popular FrontierVille, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110121/more-blimps-and-sponsored-loot-coming-as-zynga-ramps-in-game-advertising-in-2011/">and is part of the company&#8217;s efforts to build up additional sources of revenue beyond relying on the few users who elect to pay for virtual goods</a>.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3138" title="FrontierVille_print_rango FINAL" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/FrontierVille_print_rango-FINAL-275x208.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="208" />&#8220;Rango,&#8221; which debuts in theaters on Friday, is about a chameleon who must save the day in a Western-themed town, much like the atmosphere depicted in FrontierVille.</p>
<p>The placement is being conducted through a partnership between the San Francisco-based social games developer Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies.</p>
<p>Starting this afternoon, the 15 million daily players of FrontierVille will be presented with three Rango-related tasks, if they choose to participate.</p>
<p>Players must find the chameleon, who easily blends into the frontier. Then, they must get their friends to send them 10 buckets of water, and finally they must watch the film’s trailer in advance of the film’s release. If players do all three, they receive a Rango statue to add to their homestead.</p>
<p>The product placement is more overt than some of the ones in the past. It also doesn&#8217;t offer much value. For instance, the statue has no secret powers, and will not bring crops back to life, like the Farmers Insurance blimp did last year in FarmVille.</p>
<p>In an interview, Manny Anekal, global director of brand advertising at Zynga, told us that&#8217;s not the appeal of the statue. &#8220;They are collection-ists and completion-ists, but they also like getting things that are unique, and you can’t buy it,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>For Paramount, he said they&#8217;ll be watching the number of people who participate and how much awareness of the brand it creates.</p>
<p>Some critics question whether Zynga&#8217;s strategy of doing one-off product placements will be able to scale and be come a large enough business since each offer is so specialized, and the company must work so closely with the advertiser to come up with an appropriate ad campaign.</p>
<p>Anekal said it&#8217;s a work in progress. They&#8217;ve only had a dozen or so product placements since the second half of last year. &#8220;In terms of what we can scale. We are working towards that. We are nascent in the space.&#8221;</p>
<p>Zynga has worked to promote two other movies: Sony Pictures Entertainment’s The Green Hornet in Mafia Wars and DreamWorks Animations’ Megamind in FarmVille. The DreamWorks promotion attracted more than nine million people to interact with Megamind&#8217;s &#8220;Mega-Farm&#8221; in the 24-hour period.</p>

<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/samsung_creepyboy-275x191.jpg" alt="" title="samsung_creepyboy" width="275" height="191" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1369" />Between interpretive dance numbers and overly scripted interludes by a boy wearing a strange fur hat, Boo-Keun Yoon, president of Samsung&#8217;s Visual Display business, announced partnerships with Comcast, Time Warner and Hulu.</p>
<p>Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts and Time Warner Cable Chairman and CEO Glenn Britt shared the stage to demonstrate some of the features that are available with the help of connected TVs, which Samsung is calling &#8220;Smart TV.&#8221;</p>
<p>Comcast&#8217;s offering starts out pretty mild, with a new interface on the TV that is more enjoyable to browse, like a Web site, rather than a TV guide. The tablet version lets subscribers search listings, access DVR recordings and watch video on demand from thousands of content choices. Some of the more far off stuff was being able to change the TV channel from the tablet, and then watching a movie on a tablet, pausing it and then resuming it on a Samsung Smart TV.</p>
<p>The announcement builds on what MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka reported yesterday. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110105/comcast-bringing-live-tv-to-your-ipad-in-your-house/">Comcast said it will be launching a live TV service</a> for both iPad and Android tablets, but it will restrict watching live TV to subscribers&#8217; homes.</p>
<p>Britt similarly demonstrated how Time Warner subscribers would be able to access their cable subscriptions on Samsung Smart TVs and the Samsung Galaxy Tab in the home.</p>
<p>Jason Kilar, CEO of Hulu, also made a brief appearance and&#8211;without disclosing too many details&#8211;said Hulu Plus will be &#8220;coming soon&#8221; to Android phones.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1368" title="Samsung_bk" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Samsung_bk-275x194.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="194" />Tonight&#8217;s presentation demonstrated that while Samsung is always focused on the performance and the appearance of TVs, as shown yesterday by the unveiling of TVs with ultra-thin bevels, it is also interested in improving the software experience via partnerships with operators. Yoon said: &#8220;TV will become the focal point of content access and sharing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Samsung is using the lingo &#8220;Smart TV&#8221; to explain the multiple-screen and Internet-connected approach. The live subscription features are expected to be available from both cable operators later this year, but it&#8217;s unknown how it will be priced or how functional they will be from the beginning.</p>
<p>Before ending the keynote with another song and dance routine (this time with ladybug umbrellas!), Samsung wrapped things up by detailing two pats on the back: A pitch about how green Samsung&#8217;s gadgets are these days, and how Dreamworks has been using Samsung&#8217;s 3-D TVs to develop on for 18 months.</p>

<p>Walt and Kara are bathed in blue! They look vaguely Avatar-like. And here comes Cameron, who lavishes praise on the red leather hot seats.</p>
<p><strong>8:17 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;You&#8217;ve embraced tech for a long time. Where did that start?</p>
<p>Cameron: I started as an FX guy. I had to figure out how all of that was done. We no longer use any of the tools I learned how to use. The artistic skills I developed haven&#8217;t changed.</p>
<p><strong>8:18 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;Do you think there&#8217;s a way to enjoy &#8220;Avatar&#8221; without seeing it in 3-D?</p>
<p>Cameron: Sure. Most of the work I do as a director doesn&#8217;t have to do with 3-D. The 3-D should be viewed as value-added. Everyone said you had to see &#8220;Avatar&#8221; in the theaters, in 3-D. But the DVDs have sold really well. If people have the choice, they use 3-D. If they don&#8217;t, 2-D works fine.</p>
<p><strong>8:20 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;So will there be a movie that <em>requires</em> 3-D?</p>
<p>Cameron: Sure. That could be an interesting experiment, but it would be a failure of narrative. Good movies scale&#8211;they work on iPhones, and on theater screens.</p>
<p><strong>8:21 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;We saw a not-good movie the other night ["Prince of Persia"--terrible], and every preview was for a 3-D movie.</p>
<p>Cameron: Yep. There&#8217;s going to be a period of time when we risk &#8220;debasing the coinage.&#8221; If we make people pay extra for a lousy movie, we&#8217;re going to be in trouble.</p>
<p>Walt: Who does it well?</p>
<p>Cameron: Jeffrey Katzenberg at DreamWorks. &#8220;How to Train Your Dragon&#8221; was sumptuous.</p>
<p><strong>8:23 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;Let&#8217;s talk about the tech involved in &#8220;Avatar.&#8221; What&#8217;s different about your 3-D and other 3-Ds?</p>
<p>Cameron: 3-D has had a rocky start-and-stop experience. He walks through the chronology of different tech. Fast-forward to 2000. First prototypes of projectors with very high frame rates. And I was working on the different end, working on a specialized camera. It still took a long time.</p>
<p>It was a very flat curve for a long time. Now it&#8217;s practically vertical. But prior to that, exhibitors didn&#8217;t want to pay to retrofit theaters for one movie a year. Studios wouldn&#8217;t do 3-D if there were no theaters, etc. I was proselytizing, but most people ignored me.</p>
<p>By 2005, I decided to make a big film in 3-D, &#8220;without the wink and snigger,&#8221; a serious film. &#8220;You know, I&#8217;m just going to go out there and do this, and let the chips fall where they may.&#8221;</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t want to take all the credit. There were a small number of people who were doing this: Robert Zemeckis, Katzenberg. Peter Jackson said he would do a 3-D movie, but didn&#8217;t. But the announcement was valuable in itself.</p>
<p><strong>8:28 pm:</strong> Can you remake &#8220;Titanic&#8221; in 3-D?</p>
<p>Cameron: Yes.</p>
<p>Walt: Are you thinking about doing that?</p>
<p>Cameron: We&#8217;re not thinking about doing that, we&#8217;re doing it. We&#8217;ll have it ready for the ship&#8217;s 100th anniversary in 2012.</p>
<p><strong>8:30 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;Would you do this with &#8220;Terminator&#8221; and other older movies you&#8217;ve done?</p>
<p>Cameron: Depends. We&#8217;re going to spend months and millions converting &#8220;Titanic.&#8221; But if filmmakers do lousy jobs of conversions, &#8220;pop-up book style,&#8221; that&#8217;s going to get old quickly.</p>
<p><strong>8:33 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;So what about 3-D TV sets?</p>
<p>Cameron: Problem is that there&#8217;s not enough content right now. If you get every 3-D movie, you&#8217;ll have a good three days, and then you&#8217;re done.</p>
<p><strong>8:33 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;And most people have just bought sets recently.</p>
<p>Cameron: Right. But it will change over time. And if you&#8217;re buying today, go ahead and future-proof yourself by buying 3-D.</p>
<p><strong>8:34 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;Let&#8217;s talk about BP briefly. Tell us about your connection.</p>
<p>Cameron: There&#8217;s a story that the government went to Hollywood for help. But that&#8217;s not the case. I&#8217;ve just been interested and really involved in subs and wrecks for a long time. So over the last few weeks, I&#8217;ve been watching what&#8217;s happening and saying, &#8220;Those morons don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re doing.&#8221; And then I realized I know a lot of people who work in deep submergence. They don&#8217;t do oil, but they know the engineering. So I got 23 people together for a brainstorming session at EPA headquarters. The EPA guys weren&#8217;t there; they were in the Gulf. But they hosted it.</p>
<p>Kara: You went to BP first?</p>
<p>Cameron: They could not have been more gracious. &#8220;But they said, &#8216;We&#8217;ve got this.&#8217;&#8221; Here&#8217;s the thing: We sat in a room for 10 hours and worked this problem. It&#8217;s a very complex problem, and it starts 18,000 feet down. Steel fails like it&#8217;s made out of butter. So you find out there are things that prevent them from doing obvious fixes.</p>
<p>But there are things that can be done. I want to say, I never thought I would be defending BP. Anyway, I started to shift perspective, to thinking that the government should be monitoring this stuff independently, and I can help with that.</p>
<p>Walt: Doesn&#8217;t the Navy have submarines?</p>
<p>Cameron: Yes. We work with them. Anyway, we&#8217;re working on a report, etc.</p>
<p>Walt: Is the White House involved in this?</p>
<p>Cameron: No, it&#8217;s a private effort.</p>
<p><strong>8:40 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;Let&#8217;s talk about Hollywood economics.</p>
<p>Cameron: &#8220;I think there was a time when Hollywood really didn&#8217;t get the rapidity of change. But we&#8217;re past that now.&#8221; Still, there&#8217;s a limit to how quickly they can change and still keep their business.</p>

<p><strong>8:41 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;There&#8217;s a lot of consumers and tech folks who think you should be able to see a movie or TV show whenever, wherever.</p>
<p>Cameron: You hear a lot of that. But it&#8217;s usually not from the people who have spent hundreds of millions of dollars making the film. [Scattered applause. Pretty sure I hear Rupert Murdoch, who's in the front, guffawing.]</p>
<p><strong>8:43 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;But why can&#8217;t I have it when and where I want?</p>
<p>Cameron: Now we&#8217;re at the first time when there is a real question: Do I want it now or do I want it great? People had a choice of watching a pirated version on a small screen, and enough people chose the theatrical experience to make it the highest-grossing movie ever.</p>
<p>Walt: But some people want to watch it on a small screen without stealing.</p>
<p>Cameron: Perhaps there are two percent of people under 30 who have a qualm about stealing. They went to the theater because it was a better experience.</p>
<p><strong>8:45 pm:</strong> Kara attempts to talk about music, but stumbles on a Beatles album example. The big idea is that albums have gone away, replaced by singles, but movies don&#8217;t have that problem.</p>
<p>Cameron: Nope. But people do watch movies in different ways. Some are super-respectful and ritualistic; others multitask and watch picture-in-picture. At least here, the pendulum has swung back from doing that.</p>
<p><strong>8:47 pm:</strong> Walt mentions people who haven&#8217;t seen &#8220;Avatar&#8221; in the theater [ahem]. They feel &#8220;trapped,&#8221; he says, because they want to see it in 3-D.</p>
<p>Cameron: I know. So we&#8217;re helping them out and re-releasing the movie in theaters in August. [Thanks!]</p>

<p>Cameron: Maybe four years. Either &#8220;Avatar 2&#8243; or some other big movie that uses the same technology. 3-D.</p>
<p><strong>8:51 pm:</strong> A tech discussion about frame rates, followed by Walt asking Cameron if he would deign to watch a movie on a laptop.</p>
<p>Cameron: Depends on the film. I won&#8217;t watch &#8220;2001&#8243; on a laptop. But a funny movie would be fine. &#8220;The Hangover&#8221; would be just as funny on a laptop.</p>

<p><strong>8:54 pm:</strong> A discussion about what technology can&#8217;t solve. You can make movies for less money, but the apparatus of promoting movies still requires a lot of money. And note that people who have success without a studio&#8217;s marketing arm with an indie movie&#8211;the next movie they make is a studio movie. I believe in letting people do what they&#8217;re good at. Studio marketing people do this every day. A day-and-date release, worldwide&#8211;that&#8217;s something to behold. A ton of work. We had something like 76, 78 discrete versions of &#8220;Avatar&#8221; that had to be prepped within five weeks for that.</p>
<p><strong>8:58 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;Is Silicon Valley involved in any part of what you do?</p>
<p>Cameron: Yes, but not in the way you might think. I went to Microsoft (MSFT), for instance, and asked for help with archiving and data. We started a year before the movie started on digital asset management. Microsoft has been a great partner.</p>
<p><strong>9:00 pm:</strong> So you&#8217;re a big-deal director so you can work with Microsoft. Can other directors get help like that?</p>
<p>Cameron: For a movie like this, you need help from someone.</p>
<p><strong>9:01 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;Tell us about piracy. How big a problem is that for you?</p>
<p>Cameron: 3-D counteracted that for us. You could pirate the movie, but not the 3-D. That won&#8217;t hold forever, though.</p>
<p><strong>9:04 pm:</strong> So where does Hollywood go?</p>
<p>Cameron: It doesn&#8217;t change much. You still need good stories, good casts, etc. Regardless of windows, augmented reality, etc. It&#8217;s still the same business. People have been talking about interactive movies since the 1980s. But we have those. They&#8217;re called games.</p>
<p>Walt: What do you think about games?</p>
<p>Cameron: Love them. Want to figure out ways to merge games and movies in next couple projects, where you can experience them in different ways.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Q&amp;A</h4>
<p><strong>Can you talk about the Brazil controversy?</strong></p>
<p>Cameron: I&#8217;ve been concerned about the environment for a long time and &#8220;Avatar&#8221; is about that, of course. So after the movie came out, it was so well received by the environmental community that all this stuff came flooding to me. I ended up going into &#8220;cause shock.&#8221; Ended up working with people in Brazil who are going through a situation that&#8217;s eerily similar to the &#8220;Avatar&#8221; plot.</p>
<p><strong>Kara: What did you do for them?</strong></p>
<p>Cameron: I created a rapport with them and then created a series of media events that bubbled it up to public consciousness in Brazil and for now, at least, put a halt to the dam they were building there.</p>
<p><strong>Dumb question: I don&#8217;t get how you filmed it but it&#8217;s all CG [computer graphics]</strong></p>
<p>Cameron: It&#8217;s not all CG. It&#8217;s about 60 percent CG. The film was shot in a virtual world, with a virtual camera. But another part is shot in live action.</p>

<p><strong>Q: What do you consider your most personal film and what was the best advice you received when you started out?</strong></p>
<p>A: &#8220;Avatar&#8221; is probably my most personal film. It really is an expression of everything that has meant something to me since I was five years old. The best advice I ever received? Roger Corman told me to sit down a lot while I was directing.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Did you intend to elicit feelings of guilt toward the environment in the &#8220;Avatar&#8221; audience?</strong></p>
<p>A: The intent was not to bitch-slap the audience but to take it outside of itself. Which is something that only film can do. By the end of &#8220;Avatar,&#8221; you&#8217;re looking at the human world from nature&#8217;s perspective and it doesn&#8217;t look so good.</p>

<p><a href="http://d8.allthingsd.com/speakers/steve-burke/">Steve Burke</a> is about to take on a very big job: Combining GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC Universal with Comcast&#8217;s programming assets to create a television colossus. Good thing he has spent a lifetime in TV preparing for it.</p>
<p>But even without those responsibilities, Burke has plenty on his plate. As COO of the country&#8217;s biggest cable company, he helps steer Comcast (CMCSA) through tricky waters: Net neutrality, <a href="http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2008/08/fcc-spanks-comcast-for-p2p-blocking-no-fine-full-disclosure.ars">feisty file-sharers</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvVp7b5gzqU">sleeping tech guys</a>, etc.</p>
<p>In certain circles&#8211;perhaps one you&#8217;re in sitting right now&#8211;the central question Burke and Comcast have to answer is: How are you going to survive the attempts of Google/Apple/everyone on the Web to turn you into an irrelevant dumb-pipe provider?</p>
<p>But the flip side of this question is just as valid: How can anyone really dislodge the company that controls the pipe that makes TV? <span id="more-5773"></span></p>
<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p>Kara starts off with the basics: Why do you want to buy NBC?</p>
<p>Burke: We&#8217;ve always believed that content and distribution go better together. We&#8217;ve had distribution, we&#8217;ve been trying to get content for a while. Tried to get Disney (DIS), came close to buying Universal when Vivendi owned the whole thing.</p>
<p><strong>8:16 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;but lots of companies have tried marrying content and distribution. That doesn&#8217;t always work.</p>
<p><strong>8:16 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;It has for News Corp. (NWS). But in our case, we already have the ability to put up 70,000 hours of content for video on demand. But we don&#8217;t have all the content we&#8217;d like. We don&#8217;t have day-and-date movies. We&#8217;d like all prime-time programming on VOD, etc. The thing that slows that down is the natural negotiations that you have to go through when you don&#8217;t own the content.</p>
<p><strong>8:18 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;You&#8217;re also worried about becoming a dumb pipe, without control, right?</p>
<p><strong>8:18 am</strong>: Burke: I like to think of it as opportunities. Look at DreamWorks (DWA)&#8211;they are worried about declining DVD sales, and they&#8217;d like to be able to do electronic sell-through. We&#8217;re in a position to help craft that evolution.</p>
<p><strong>8:19 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;Are you sure consumers really want to watch this stuff on TVs, as opposed to iPads, etc?</p>
<p><strong>8:20 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;We&#8217;re all for choice, anytime, anywhere. We believe consumers want that, too, and &#8220;it&#8217;s frustratingly slow&#8221; to get that to happen. &#8220;But I think that&#8217;s the world  we&#8217;re all crashing into,&#8221; and &#8220;you can&#8217;t stop it anyway.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:21 am</strong>: What&#8217;s going with Hulu, which you&#8217;re going to own a piece of?</p>
<p><strong>8:21 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;Whether it&#8217;s Hulu or Fancast, which we own all of, &#8220;people want their shows on the Internet. And they&#8217;re going to get their shows on the Internet.&#8221; Not sure if it&#8217;s going to be ad-supported or a paid model. &#8220;I know&#8211;I&#8217;ve read&#8221;&#8211;that Hulu is going to try a paid model.</p>
<p><strong>8:22 am</strong>: We also support the TV-everywhere concept (spearheaded by Time Warner&#8211;get what you want on the Web, as long as you pay for a cable subscription).</p>
<p><strong>8:23 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;you&#8217;re going to be running NBC, right?</p>
<p><strong>8:23 am</strong>: When the deal closes, Jeff Zucker will run the entity. But he&#8217;ll report to me.</p>
<p><strong>8:24 am</strong>: By the way, content and distribution don&#8217;t naturally work together. You have to make them work together. You have to do things that sometimes aren&#8217;t immediately advantageous for both sides.</p>
<p><strong>8:24 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;Let&#8217;s talk about your individual businesses, as well as Steve Jobs&#8217;s expressed lack of interest in getting into TV. So cable is most important to you, right?</p>
<p><strong>8:25 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;Cable provides the majority of NBCU&#8217;s cash flow. They&#8217;re the best part of the media landscape right now. Majority of cash at most entertainment companies comes from cable right now, and even more so at NBCU. But we also think there&#8217;s upside with Universal studio and NBC broadcast.</p>
<p><strong>8:26 am</strong>: Okay, but give me an honest assessment of broadcast. What did you think of the Conan deal? Did they call you?</p>
<p><strong>8:27 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;as the deal closes, it&#8217;s not our company. We can&#8217;t manage anything. To a degree, we&#8217;re watching things in the same way you are. There&#8217;s clearly a separation that exists. Because of regulators [natch].</p>
<p><strong>8:27 am</strong>: Anyway, broadcast TV has been challenged for some time. But right now it looks to be on the upswing. Ads are coming back. retrans consent, where broadcasters will get money from cable operators, is coming. But broadly, if you look at TV, including cable, the overall television business is making as much money as ever.</p>
<p><strong>8:29 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;do you still need broadcast networks anymore, anyway?</p>
<p><strong>8:29 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;for big events, you can&#8217;t get a bigger audience. And that&#8217;s very attractive. We&#8217;re not naive. We know the business is &#8220;very challenged.&#8221; But in the next few years, there can be a real upside. We can invest in the business. If you&#8217;re in the network TV business, you have to spend the money to be competitive: on pilots, on encouraging creative people to work, etc. Note that NBC spent a lot more on pilots for this fall than they did a year ago. &#8220;If you&#8217;re in it, you have to be in it to invest and win. You can&#8217;t cut your way to success in broadcast TV.&#8221; [Which was Zucker's strategy last year. So what does that mean?]</p>
<p><strong>8:31 am</strong>: Burke moves on to the Universal movie studio. It can move the existing library to different platforms, help it migrate from DVD to electronic sell-through, etc.</p>
<p><strong>8:32 am</strong>: Will Burke have to do a lot of cost-cutting? When we bought AT&amp;T (T), we did. But in this case, it&#8217;s not about costs. There&#8217;s very little overlap. It&#8217;s more of a case of trying to put everything together.</p>
<p><strong>8:33 am</strong>: Kara: So will you sell anything off after the deal goes through?</p>
<p>Burke: No. We want the cable systems, but the other stuff has value, too. And all of the parts can work together.</p>
<p><strong>8:34 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;How do you look at competitors like Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG). What do you think of Google TV?</p>
<p><strong>8:34 am</strong>: Our real competitors are the satellite companies and telcos. Right now. The real challenge is delivering all that data. You need infrastructure&#8211;pipe&#8211;for that. That&#8217;s how you deliver tonnage. And it&#8217;s going to be that way for a long time. The Web can deliver video, but not the same tonnage, in the same way. There are a lot of companies that want to get to the TV set. And I think all of them can be complementary. But people who subscribe to us want ESPN, CNBC, etc.</p>
<p><strong>8:36 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;But why do need bundles and tiers, anyway?</p>
<p><strong>8:36 am</strong>: Burke: The programmers we work with want full distribution. And you pay $50, $60, and you get 200 channels. And the ecosystem works very well for the programmers, and it works well for us.</p>
<p><strong>8:36 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;and for customers?</p>
<p><strong>8:37 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;TV in the U.S. is better than anywhere in the world. It&#8217;s natural to say you only want to pay for two channels. And we could technically do that, and we could offer a less expensive bundle. But I think the business model has evolved to be what it is right now, and it&#8217;s been successful for both sides of the equation.</p>

<p><strong>8:37 am</strong>: But again, people are picking and choosing what they want on the Web. And some of them seem to be turning off cable as well. Aren&#8217;t you worried about that?</p>
<p><strong>8:38 am</strong>: Burke: We worry all the time. But the fact of the matter is, it&#8217;s counterintuitive. I have five kids. And they all consume media different ways. But quarter after quarter, year after year, cable subs go up. It has never gone down. There&#8217;s no evidence that people are giving up their cable. If people want ESPN or CNBC, they&#8217;re going to subscribe. In the future, you&#8217;ll have more stuff on more devices. But at the end of the day, it&#8217;s in the programmers&#8217; interest to get affiliate fees for their stuff.</p>
<p><strong>8:40 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;But don&#8217;t you think people want a la carte?</p>
<p><strong>8:40 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;I&#8217;d like to buy the first section of the Wall Street Journal, and not the rest of the paper [followed by Kara fumbling with some math].</p>
<p><strong>8:40 am</strong>: In any case, you&#8217;ve got much more choice now than you had 10 years ago. It&#8217;ll be the same thing in the next 10 years.</p>
<p><strong>8:41 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;which devices are important to you beyond TV?</p>
<p><strong>8:41 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;The  iPad, of course. We just showed off that new iPad app/TV controller that will replace the crummy search and navigation that exists on the set-top box now.</p>
<p><strong>8:43 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;Is 3-D coming to the home?</p>
<p><strong>8:43 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;Yep. This won&#8217;t be like HD sets, where they started off very expensive and came down relatively slowly. We&#8217;ll get a  point pretty quickly where if you&#8217;re buying a nice TV set, it will have 3-D. Now there are a lot of places where 3-D doesn&#8217;t enhance the experience. And they need to figure it out. For instance, you don&#8217;t 3-D when you have overhead shots at at a football game. So we need to figure out what percent of stuff you watch will have 3-D. But it&#8217;s coming.</p>
<p><strong>8:44 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;Jobs talked about collapsing windows, but windows don&#8217;t really seem to ever collapse.</p>
<p><strong>8:45 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;Right. They are narrowing, but only slightly. You want to have windows, but make sure they have a purpose. For instance, I think the best place to have a movie for the general public is the movie theater. I think that&#8217;s going to be the same for a long time.</p>
<p><strong>8:46 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;But what if you don&#8217;t want to go the theater?</p>
<p><strong>8:46 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;I don&#8217;t know. I think there&#8217;s a real benefit to having it in theaters opening weekend. But 90 days out, I&#8217;m not sure. It probably doesn&#8217;t have to be windowed for 90 days; you should be able to get it on VOD, etc.</p>
<p><strong>8:47 am</strong>: Kara&#8211;One more time: What&#8217;s the most important device, either real or overhyped?</p>
<p><strong>8:47 am</strong>: Burke&#8211;The iPad. I bring it everywhere I go. It&#8217;s so elegant. And so early in its life cycle. But I&#8217;m looking forward to other tablets, too. The big picture is that all this stuff will enhance the value of great content. That&#8217;s the bet we made with NBC, that it can get to more people, over more devices, and get more valuable that way. People are always worried about technology draining value from media, but each new wave of technology has been additive.</p>
<p>Q&amp;A:</p>
<p><strong>Q: Do you think your pipe business will become separate from rest of your business and become commoditized?</strong></p>
<p>Burke: For starters, we&#8217;re already separating programming from video (which includes TV, high-speed, etc.</p>
<p><strong>Q: What about the theory that big mergers, like the ones you&#8217;re doing, are products of hubris more than business savvy?</strong></p>

<p>Burke: I know that theory. We&#8217;ve done a lot of deals. &#8220;Every single time we&#8217;ve done a deal, Wall Street has said, &#8216;Why are you doing that?&#8217;&#8221; But we have a view that content and distribution work together if properly managed. And that a company that gets bigger can do cool things with technology, if you do it right. &#8220;But we&#8217;re totally aware that there are a lot of people saying&#8211;&#8217;Why don&#8217;t you stay where you are?&#8217; We think we&#8217;re getting a fairly priced deal for NBCU.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: Do you think there will be a market for set-top boxes that consumers buy on their own, with features they want?</strong></p>
<p>Burke: Complicated question. Each MSO is a conglomeration of different technologies. We&#8217;d love it if people bought their own set-top boxes. We&#8217;d save a ton of money. But the different technologies involved make that difficult.</p>
<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s your mobile strategy?</strong></p>
<p>Burke: We&#8217;ve invested in Clearwire. We&#8217;re rolling out WiMax. We&#8217;re big believers in Wi-Fi. The iPad makes you want Wi-Fi meshing in cities, and we&#8217;re working on that. But the traditional cellphone business, as a fourth product to complement TV, landline and Web, doesn&#8217;t make sense for us.</p>
<p><strong>Q: You guys have been good about chasing after malware, botnets, etc. What can you do to get others to emulate you?</strong></p>

<p>Burke: The Internet business is crucial for us. It&#8217;s a growth driver. So we have to provide really reliable, really fast Internet service. And we believe in open internet. But you have to deal with congestion and protect copyrights and prevent malware and spam, and we invest a lot in that. It&#8217;s a very tricky balancing act, to make sure that the highway is really fast, but also controlled.</p>
<p><strong>Q: I run Hillcrest, and Hulu blocked my service. Will you do something different when you own NBC?</strong></p>
<p>Burke: &#8220;It&#8217;s not time for me to answer that question.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Kara: &#8220;Really?&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Burke: &#8220;Really.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: Your customers hate you. What are doing about that?</strong></p>
<p>Burke: We&#8217;re working on customer service, spending a lot of money on it. If you don&#8217;t take care of your customers, they&#8217;re going to go somewhere else. The physical networks are getting more sophisticated. But we want to improve them.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Apologies, missed the question here.</strong></p>
<p>Burke is explaining that TV software platform is &#8220;balkanized&#8221; compared with the Web, where it&#8217;s much easier to get stuff to work together.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s hard to find a <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10423995-1.html">TV manufacturer</a> that isn&#8217;t showing off sets promising to let you replicate the &#8220;Avatar&#8221; experience at home. And programmers are promising to produce entertainment you&#8217;ll want to see in three dimensions. <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126281921528818651.html?mod=WSJ_hps_MIDDLETopMiniLead+Story">Sony</a> (SNE), in particular, is making a big bet here.</p>
<p>But even if you believe there&#8217;s an audience for this stuff, the 3-D advocates have one big problem in front of them: Lousy timing. American consumers are finishing the end of a major TV replacement cycle, which means it will be some time before they&#8217;re ready to plunk down big money again for new screens.</p>
<p>If you want a reality check on 3-D&#8217;s impact on consumer electronics and the entertainment industry, check out this brief interview I conducted with DreamWorks Animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg yesterday (apologies for crypt lighting and distracted camerawork&#8211;you can at least hear him, though).</p>
<p>Katzenberg is definitely a believer&#8211;his studio just announced that all of its future releases will be available in 3-D&#8211;but even he thinks it will be &#8220;a ways down the line&#8221; before DreamWorks (DWA) sees a lift from the sale of 3-D DVDs.</p>
<p>Katzenberg, along with Disney&#8217;s (DIS) Bob Iger, can afford to wait a bit for the 3-D boom because both studios cater primarily to families who are still buying DVDs, even if those numbers are dipping.</p>
<p>The rest of Hollywood will be more impatient. The industry depends on home video for a large part of its revenue and an even bigger slice of its profits, and those sales have been dropping off dramatically.</p>
<p>The high-def Blu-ray format was supposed to spur consumers to buy more discs, but it took years for the industry to settle a costly format war, and Blu-ray is only now starting to get a little bit of traction. <p>Terms of the deal haven&#8217;t been disclosed, but I&#8217;m told the transaction values the joint venture at $300 million. Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube isn&#8217;t an owner in the JV but will share revenue in exchange for lending Vevo its massive distribution platform. The site, which will exist both outside YouTube and within YouTube as a branded channel with its own player, is scheduled to launch later this year.</p>
<p>Vevo has been seeking an outside money source for some time; <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-music-video-jv-site-vevo-raising-money-at-300-million-valuation/">PaidContent</a> had previously reported the venture was looking for a $300 million valuation.</p>
<p>But the most important part about the outside money is that it&#8217;s outside: The investment is designed in large part to allay antitrust issues, given that Vevo&#8217;s existing owners represent two of the four major music labels. Providence provided the same cushion to Hulu, which was originally put together by GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC Universal and News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox.</p>
<p>Abu Dhabi Media, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government, has made several forays into Western media, but until now, all of its deals have been focused on Hollywood. Two years ago, for instance, the company announced a $1 billion pact with Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) Warner Brothers to finance movies and build a theme park, though <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/mar2009/tc20090329_636430.htm">that deal has yet to yield much activity</a>. Earlier this month, it made a much more modest <a href="http://www.admedia.ae/en/currentnewsdetails.php?id=94">$10 million pledge to back Walter Parkes and Laurie McDonald</a>, the movie producers who once ran DreamWorks studios.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s not to say it&#8217;s a particularly good or bad idea to hire a former Dreamworks and Wal-Mart (WMT) exec named David Porter (pictured here) as vice president of retail stores to create Microsoft-branded stores&#8211;or as the company announced yesterday, &#8220;to create a better PC and Microsoft retail purchase experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>While Microsoft (MSFT) sells most of its consumer products via big-box retail stores like Best Buy (BBY), and the retail market for just about everything is weak, Apple (AAPL) has definitively proven that a well-designed retail store can be a powerful marketing tool.</p>
<p>The visually stunning and infectiously fun Apple stores, in fact, have been an important part of its recent surge in mainstream consumer appeal, becoming hubs of activity and even social life in its mostly big-city locations.</p>
<p>In fact, that was just the idea behind microsoftSF, which was located in San Francisco&#8217;s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metreon">Metreon Sony Entertainment Center</a>.</p>
<p>The huge 8,500-square-foot store, with 160 Microsoft products and related software and hardware from 30 partners, was billed in a <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1999/jun99/microsoftsfpr.mspx">June 1999 press release</a> as &#8220;an interactive, hands-on retail environment in which people of all ages, from all walks of life and at all levels of technological expertise can explore the benefits technology can bring them. Far more than just another computer store, microsoftSF is a showcase for the latest technology from Microsoft and the hardware and software companies with which it collaborates.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/about_sponsor_logos.gif"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/about_sponsor_logos-193x300.gif" alt="" title="about_sponsor_logos" width="193" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-9767" /></a></p>
<p>The microsoftSF store, which I visited several times (but bought nothing, although I was mostly a PC user at the time), was very attractive and the only such store in the world, with a &#8220;Road Warrior&#8221; arena, a lounge, a gaming area and more.</p>
<p>Said the press release: &#8220;To make all this possible, microsoftSF deploys Microsoft Windows and more than 100,000 feet of copper cable, 60 Sony PCs, 18 laptop docking stations, four dual-processor servers powered by Hewlett-Packard Net Servers, a Cisco Systems network, and an array of hidden audio speakers that create 16 individually controlled sound zones.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Microsoft CEO (then President) Steve Ballmer weighed in enthusiastically:</p>
<p>&#8220;We are delighted to be able to showcase in this one-of-a-kind retail environment the entire range of Microsoft software and hardware, as well as the technology of other companies who share the vision of how the PC and the Internet can empower people any time, anywhere. San Francisco and the Silicon Valley are home to the world&#8217;s largest and one of the most sophisticated high-tech audiences, so this was the natural place to create this site&#8211;dedicated to showing, in an interactive environment, the way technology can enhance our working, learning, living and playing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not so much, as it turned out. The store closed in 2001.</p>

<p>But that does not necessarily mean that the new and much expanded efforts will have the same experience. The Metreon, which was sold off by Sony, was an odd mall then and still is, although its movie theater is successful.</p>
<p>And, in this effort, Microsoft will have control of the whole enchilada.</p>
<p>Plus, if well done, it is not such a bad idea to have a place&#8211;perhaps only in highly-trafficked locations in big cities&#8211;to show off its consumer wares, especially its popular Xbox 360 and other products (please, <em>not the Zune</em>!).</p>
<p>More importantly, given the disaster that has been the Windows Vista experience, it is probably a good idea to have a place to get people interested in Windows 7, especially its touch capabilities, when it rolls out this year.</p>
<p>Also, I still like the <a href="http://d5.allthingsd.com/20070530/microsoft-surface/">Surface interactive table</a>, even if it is mocked in a popular video as a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20070621/microsoft-surface-parody/">&#8220;big-ass table.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Of course, only Apple stores have done well so far in this genre, as everyone, from Gateway (GTW), Sony (SNE), Nokia (NOK), Helio and Palm (PALM), has had rough retail experiences.</p>
<p>So, Porter certainly has his work cut out for him, at least judging from the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/feb09/02-12CVPRetailStoresPR.mspx?rss_fdn=Press%20Releases">press release from Microsoft yesterday</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Defining the time frame, locations and specifics for planned Microsoft-branded retail stores will be Porter’s first order of business. The purpose of opening these stores is to create deeper engagement with consumers and continue to learn firsthand about what they want and how they buy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said Porter: &#8220;There are tremendous opportunities ahead for Microsoft to create a world-class shopping experience for our customers. I am excited about helping consumers make more informed decisions about their PC and software purchases, and we&#8217;ll share learnings from our stores with our existing retail and OEM partners that are critical to our success.&#8221;</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll have to wait to see if the second time is a charm.</p>

The decision heats up the DVD format battle, as media companies consider which technology provides a better viewing experience.</li>
<li>With little fanfare, Hewlett-Packard has debuted <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/20/technology/20print.html?ref=technology">Cloudprint,</a> a free service enabling users to print documents on any printer from almost any location worldwide. According to the New York Times, <img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2007/06/iphone_34.jpg" alt="iPhone" width="100" height="90" class="alignleft" />the innovation came after H-P wondered earlier this year how it might piggyback on the release of Apple&#8217;s iPhone.</li>
<li>Speaking of the iPhone (left), recycling is already catching on. This week, Apple is bringing out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/20/apple-trots-out-refurb-iphones-100-off-list-price/">refurbished   iPhones</a> at the online Apple store. Engadget notes that the company is discounting the reconditioned handsets by $100 for both models.</li>
<li>Skype, reports the Register, is blaming its outage woes last week on a <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08/20/skype_outage_post-mortem/">flood of users downloading a routine security patch.</a> The VOIP provider has also issued an <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6954675.stm">apology</a> for the &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; service interruption, which for some users lasted into the weekend.</li>
<li>Google is flexing its muscle in China. Reuters reports that the search colossus has bought a <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/technology-media-telco-SP/idUKSHA23163320070820">stake in a Chinese community Web site called Tianya.cn.</a> The move in the second-largest Internet market in the world marks Google&#8217;s growing interest in social networking.</li>
<li>Tilera Corp., a start-up in Silicon Valley, has <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB118757210423602476.html?mod=technology_main_whats_news">revealed details of its 64-processor chip.</a> The Wall Street Journal says that the chip and its underlying design could be used in products that have upward of a thousand calculating engines.</li>
<li>A multistage attack has left job-search site Monster.com reeling from a potentially <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&#038;articleId=9031418">huge stolen-data headache.</a> Computerworld disclosed that more than 1.6 million records belonging to several hundred thousand people have been compromised by a Trojan horse program that could plant malware on their computers.</li>

Why, <a href="http://www.wired.com/politics/onlinerights/news/2007/08/wiki_tracker">the very corporations written about.</a> According to Wired, <a href="http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/">Wikipedia Scanner,</a> a data-mining service launched earlier this month, has shown that millions of entry changes can be tracked to corporate &#8220;editors.&#8221;</li>
