eBay Appoints Devin Wenig as New President of Marketplaces

eBay has named Devin Wenig, former CEO of Thomson Reuters Markets, as new president of its Marketplaces business unit. The appointment follows the departure of Lorrie Norrington, who left the position a year ago. Wenig, 44, will report to President and CEO John Donahoe. Over the past year, the Marketplaces unit has been undergoing a transformation, and while it represents eBay’s largest division, it faces being eclipsed by eBay’s faster growing PayPal division.

As the possible acquisition of Groupon by Google chugs along–sources tell me bankers are starting to swan around annoyingly, which could be a sign of fruition, but we shall see–BoomTown realized that I have been remiss in mentioning one likely key person in the deal strategy. And, I am only guessing, that would be the search giant’s relatively new head of commerce, Stephanie Tilenius. That’s because the unassuming former longtime eBay exec–you won’t see her all over the scene swanning, for sure–is one of the few at the company sharp enough to have seen Groupon’s copious local retail data as a strong fit into Google.

eBay Lays Out 3-Year Growth Plan; Refocusing on PayPal

At a time when most companies aren’t willing to offer guidance on the March quarter, eBay is laying out its vision for 2011. And what it sees is a big opportunity for PayPal. In connection with the company’s analyst meeting today, eBay said its growth will be driven by its two core businesses: PayPal and e-commerce. In something of a repositioning, the company says that PayPal “has become a second core business,” with an opportunity to become even bigger than eBay Marketplaces.

This afternoon, eBay announced that eBay Marketplaces President Rajiv Dutta, a longtime executive at the company, will retire in October and be replaced by Lorrie Norrington, who has been running eBay Marketplaces Operations.
