<p>At a media event in New York today, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer announced a new office in Times Square for the Silicon Valley Internet giant. </p>
<p>&#8220;From one Mayor to another,&#8221; said Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Mayer (<em>get it?</em>) about locating in Manhattan&#8217;s iconic location, which will house 500 Yahoo employees.</p>
<p>But not Tumblr, which will remain blissfully downtown, even after its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130519/yahoo-tumblrs-for-cool-board-approves-1-1-billion-deal/">$1.1 billion all-cash acquisition by Yahoo</a> announced today.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very happy that Tumblr is a home-grown company,&#8221; said Bloomberg,</p>
<p>Irony alert: Yahoo&#8217;s new digs in the Big Apple is actually the old HQ of the New York Times. </p>
<p>&#8220;Twenty years ago there were a lot of Yahoos in New York,&#8221; said the Bloomberg, channeling Jackie Mason and then touting the local tech industry and reeling off the stats. </p>
<p>Boiled down: Geeks rule. </p>
<p>Mayer also talked briefly about the acquisition of Tumblr and repeated the trying-really-hard-to-be-wacky, &#8220;we&#8217;re going to try not to screw it up&#8221; promise.</p>
<p>Mayer then introduced another promise &#8212; a commitment to fix Yahoo&#8217;s last major acquisition screw-up, Flickr.</p>
<p>Yahoo exec Adam Cahan, who is in charge of the photo-sharing service and who uses the term &#8220;awesome&#8221; quite a lot, came on next to show the changes.</p>
<p>He introduced a new design, which looks kinda like Instagram and kinda like Flipboard and kinda like Apple and kinda like Facebook&#8217;s homepage. It does bring Yahoo up to speed with others in the key photo-sharing space, which is good.</p>
<p>(Sorry, I cannot be more detailed, since I could only see it via Internet, because <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> was not invited to the event by Yahoo.)</p>
<p>From what I can tell, it&#8217;s very image-centric with big photos and little text.</p>
<p>Cahan also introed a new Google Android mobile version and said that Flickr will offer a terabyte of space for free to users, which is about 537,731 photos. </p>
<p>Then he talked about a terabyte a lot, claiming that &#8220;no other Internet company has offered you a terabyte&#8221; of space. (Well, I would imagine Google and Facebook will now do so in a New York minute.)</p>
<p>Some very nice man with a German accent demoed it. (Again, I am not there and did not see a name going by on screen, and I can&#8217;t ask Yahoo PR his name.)</p>
<p>It&#8217;s purty, for sure, and nice to be able to upload photos in their full fidelity without worrying about space constraints.</p>
<p>Mayer called it &#8220;spectacular,&#8221; &#8220;bigger&#8221; and, of course, &#8220;awesome.&#8221;</p>
<p>It is certainly much more striking than how the antiquated Flickr homepage used to look like &#8212; which was circa 1969. But, like I said, kinda like what others have already done, although these updates are certainly a welcome change for Flickr. </p>
<p>Mayer then ran a very cute video for the changes, which, well, was kinda like an Apple video.</p>
<p>&#8220;Flickr was awesome once and then it languished,&#8221; said Mayer, declaring victory already. &#8220;And now it&#8217;s awesome again.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a Q&#038;A after, Mayer, Cahan and the nice German guy answered questions about integration of Tumblr and Flickr (not yet!); how it was like or not like Instagram (no cropping apparently &#8212; which is exactly what is fantastic about Instagram); the terabyte (it&#8217;s awesome!); and more Tumblr deets (you know them already); monetization; and a bizarre one about redundancy so you don&#8217;t lose photos. </p>
<p>Mayer also said that Yahoo had bought 11 billboards in Times Square to show off Flickr and noted there was a party after for the media. (Except the unchosen, so I am enjoying a nice glass of Cabernet all by my lonesome. Frankly, it&#8217;s <em>awesome!</em>) </p>

<p>According to numerous sources close to the situation, the Tumblr brand will continue on in the wake of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130519/yahoo-tumblrs-for-cool-board-approves-1-1-billion-deal/">its $1.1 billion acquisition by Yahoo</a>.</p>
<p>That includes definitive promises by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer to once-sale-shy Tumblr CEO David Karp to allow him to shepherd the fast-growing blogging product, with no forced integration with Yahoo&#8217;s many other content properties.</p>
<p>That said, sources added, there will be more back-end changes to marry infrastructure, such as undergirding Tumblr&#8217;s nascent advertising business and giving it more distribution opportunities.</p>
<p>&#8220;At the beginning, at least, it&#8217;ll be hands-off,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;It has to be.&#8221;</p>
<p>While that is probably no surprise, it&#8217;s still good news for Tumblr employees as well as its very opinionated user base, which is not likely to greet a takeover by a corporate giant of the social, iconoclastic user-generated content service.</p>
<p>That said, Yahoo execs discussed and are aware of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130518/why-yahoo-doesnt-think-tumblr-has-a-porn-problem/?mod=atd_homepage_carousel">issues around porn published on the site</a>, although they believe it to be fixable over time.</p>
<p>As Peter Kafka noted:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>To spell that out: Tumblr&#8217;s advertisers don’t have to worry about their stuff showing up on blogs like We Want Porn. At worst, it&#8217;s possible that they&#8217;ll end up advertising to a user whose dashboard includes posts from We Want Porn. But in general, they ought to be pretty well insulated from that stuff.</p>
<p>By the same token, if Yahoo wanted to, it could end up scrubbing Tumblr of porn, and losing a lot of users and views &#8212; but it probably wouldn’t lose much in the way of monetizable users. Unless it turns out that the majority of Tumblr&#8217;s core users have signed on exclusively to use porn.</p></blockquote>
<p>Or, as a Tumblr investor also told Kafka: &#8220;Non-story. Tumblr is the Internet. It&#8217;s a dashboard-follower model, opt-in.&#8221;</p>
<p>Moving on from porn, sources close to the situation &#8212; okay, pretty much <em>everyone</em> is chit-chatting away now &#8212; said that Mayer spent a lot of time with Karp (who was in Silicon Valley last week, in fact, visiting her) about the transition, and about how the new ownership would impact him and the service.</p>
<p>One source called them &#8220;kindred spirits&#8221; on the issue, and that Mayer has been given great purview by the Yahoo board to foster Tumblr to prevent it from turning out like Flickr, Delicious and many other big acquisitions dating back to GeoCities. (I was there covering that deal way back when, and what a mess <em>that</em> was!)</p>
<p>Mayer is well-liked by product and engineering entrepreneurs, and has often focused on them at Yahoo, over the perhaps more important demands of business and advertising execs.</p>
<p>That would appeal to Karp, who once famously said that online advertising made him physically sick. Still, he has recently begun to embrace ad sales at Tumblr.</p>
<p>Within the last year or so, Tumblr has started selling modestly sized &#8220;native ads&#8221; promoting brands&#8217; Tumblr pages on users&#8217; dashboards, which has shown promise. Tumblr has said it had $13 million in revenue last year, and sources said it could get to up to $100 million this year.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to be very careful here,&#8221; said a source with knowledge of the acquisition.</p>
<p>A source at Tumblr agreed: &#8220;This will be a very delicate dance, since so much could go wrong if done without care.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, some at Yahoo are worried that the company might be chasing the youthful demographic at Tumblr too assiduously. &#8220;This is a very fickle audience,&#8221; said another high-ranking Yahoo exec. &#8220;Chasing a young one is a very tricky thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yes, indeed, but Mayer thinks she is the one to be able to pull it off and make Yahoo relevant with an even wider consumer base.</p>
<p><strong>AllThingsD</strong> <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130517/yahoo-board-to-meet-sunday-to-consider-1-1-billion-all-cash-deal-to-acquire-tumblr/">broke news of the deal in the offing last week</a>, which has since been approved by Yahoo&#8217;s board.</p>

<p>Changes at AOL&#8217;s local content site, Patch: CEO Jon Brod will step down and is being replaced by COO and President <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121205/patch-names-steven-kalin-president-and-coo/">Steve Kalin</a>, according to an internal memo the New York Internet company sent to the division&#8217;s employees today. </p>
<p>As part of the move, Brod will be going back to run AOL Ventures, in a job where he began at the company.</p>
<p>In addition, sources said a little less than three percent of the 1,400-employee Patch staff will be laid off. The memo notes that downsizing, without giving the numbers, which includes consolidation of several parts of Patch by streamlining its regional structure from 20 to nine teams. </p>
<p>According to the memo, the layoffs are to &#8220;make Patch profitable in 2013 and a commitment to continue to improve our business model.&#8221;</p>
<p>AOL confirmed the contents of the memo, saying in a statement, “Patch is streamlining its regional editorial structure across the country by moving from 20 to nine teams. We are implementing this team approach based on the success of our field tests earlier this year. The team approach allows for flexibility based on the unique needs of each community and the strengths of our editors. We are not reducing our number of sites or our coverage area as a result of this change. Making these important changes came with the difficult decision to eliminate some positions. We recognize these changes are painful for individuals and for our organization &#8212; and we are committed to handling the people impacted with care and sensitivity.”</p>
<p>Patch is growing, according to comScore. In April, traffic was up 26 percent since last year to 13 million unique monthly visitors, who are consuming about 1.3 million pieces of content that are now being served up per month.</p>
<p>Still, Patch has attracted a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130508/aols-earnings-are-light-but-revenue-and-ad-sales-are-on-track/">level of investor pressure and criticism</a>, even as AOL CEO Tim Armstrong has stuck strongly with the hyperlocal content effort and invested heavily in growing out a network of sites across the country aimed at neighborhood news and events. </p>
<p>But Armstrong signaled changes when he was queried about Patch during AOL&#8217;s recent quarterly call: &#8220;What you&#8217;re going to see as we approach Q4 is us trying to get to the finish line of profitability, and we will use all means possible to get there.&#8221;</p>
<p>Apparently, Armstrong means what he says and says what he means.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the memo:</p>

<p>Since the day Jon, Warren, and I founded Patch, we have had one mission in mind &#8212; improve the lives of people in local communities by 25 percent. Patch has become an important brand in the hundreds of towns we serve, and it is a staple of our communities. With the average Patch just over two years old, we are well on the way toward our goal of improving peoples&#8217; lives and building a sustainable business in the process.</p>
<p>Over the past year, Patch has made an enormous impact in our communities. The coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings, the lifeline that Patch provided residents during the Sandy Hook school shootings and Superstorm Sandy, and the exclusive Sanford-Colbert Busch debate in South Carolina stand out as powerful examples. The new Patch platform that is rolling out now will only increase Patch&#8217;s ability to instantly improve communities. </p>
<p>As we have made a commitment to improve our Patch towns and communities, we made a similar commitment to make Patch profitable in 2013 and a commitment to continue to improve our business model.  Just as we have rolled out new products and services to Patch, we are announcing today the rollout of the recently tested town structures, which will help us serve communities in a more local way and move Patch meaningfully toward profitability.</p>
<p>The changes have two main goals:</p>
<p>1.     Improve and increase our hyper-local programming and deepen our user engagement through the Patch 2.0 platform; and<br />
2.     Implement a structure that unlocks the path to profitability.</p>
<p>To accomplish these goals we are taking the following steps, effective immediately:</p>
<p>We are combining the East, Central and West editorial zones to create a simpler structure that will enable faster decision-making and a more coordinated editorial effort across Patch. Anthony Duignan-Cabrera has been promoted to VP, Editorial Director, overseeing day-to-day editorial field operations, and will continue to report into Rachel in her role as Chief Content Officer.</p>
<p>We are streamlining our regional editorial structure across the country by moving from 20 to nine teams. We are not reducing our number of sites or our coverage area as a result of this change.</p>
<p>We are promoting Katie O&#8217;Connor to Director of Editorial Operations and Content Strategy. In this role, she will work with our editorial teams to help create new content and programming.</p>
<p>We are implementing a &#8220;team approach&#8221; for our sites, based on the success of our field tests earlier this year. This approach allows for flexibility based on the unique needs of each community and the strengths of editors.   </p>
<p>Jon and I have decided to elevate Steve Kalin to the CEO position at Patch. Steve has done a fantastic job since he began at Patch in December as President and COO. Jon and I hired Steve with the thought that his extensive background in scaled, local platforms would eventually allow him to run Patch on a day-to-day basis.</p>
<p>Jon has led Patch since it was just an idea and helped scale it into one of the most significant brands in local communities in the U.S. Under his guidance, Patch has gained tens of millions of users and more than ten thousand advertisers; and it has covered millions of local stories. Going forward, Jon will return to AOL Ventures full-time and lead our push into several areas we have identified as significant future growth opportunities for AOL. </p>
<p>The changes we are making at Patch, however, come with the difficult decision to eliminate some positions. These employees have contributed greatly to Patch&#8217;s business with passion and dedication. We sincerely thank them for all they have done to make Patch what it is today. Their impact will always be felt here. We wish all affected employees continued success. They are truly Patchers for life.  </p>
<p>This is an important time for Patch. We have many great opportunities in front of us, and we continue to make decisions to ensure Patch&#8217;s success. AOL&#8217;s Board of Directors and I remain firmly supportive of Patch and our mission. Together we are building a company for the long term, one that can grow and thrive &#8212; now and far into the future. </p>

<p>LivingSocial, the daily deals site owned in part by Amazon, has suffered a massive cyber attack on its computer systems, which an email from CEO Tim O&#8217;Shaughnessy &#8212; just sent to employees and obtained by <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> &#8212; said resulted in &#8220;unauthorized access to some customer data from our servers.&#8221; </p>
<p>The hack includes customer names, emails, birthdates and encrypted passwords.</p>
<p>The breach has impacted 50 million customers of the Washington, D.C.-based company, who will now be required to reset their passwords. All of LivingSocial&#8217;s countries across the world appear to have been affected, except in Thailand, Korea, Indonesia and the Philippines, as LivingSocial units Ticketmonster and Ensogo there were on separate systems.  </p>
<p>One positive note in a not-so-positive situation: The email sent to employees and customers noted that neither customer credit card nor merchant financial information was accessed in the cyber attack.</p>
<p>This is the latest big data breach in the consumer Internet space, which has seen troublesome incursions into some high-profile companies recently, including Zappos, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120606/linkedin-tells-users-to-change-passwords-confirms-breach/">LinkedIn</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130302/add-to-hacked-list-listmaking-company-evernote/">Evernote</a>.</p>
<p>When asked for comment on the email, a LivingSocial PR spokesman confirmed the attack and that 50 million customers were impacted.</p>
<p>The attack comes at a tough time for the company, since it has been trying to turn itself around after a downturn across the daily deals landspace. LivingSocial got a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130220/livingsocial-gets-a-much-needed-110-million-boost/">large cash infusion recently</a> from investors to help staunch its losses. Amazon owns 29 percent of the company. </p>

<p>At a human resources conference yesterday, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer finally commented on the massive controversy generated after the Silicon Valley Internet company decided to end its work-from-home offering to its employees.</p>
<p>News of the change came in February after <strong>AllThingsD</strong> <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/physically-together-heres-the-internal-yahoo-no-work-from-home-memo-which-extends-beyond-remote-workers/">published a hopelessly awkward memo on the new dictate that resulted in a firestorm of debate</a>.</p>
<p>That was no surprise, since the missive was confusingly penned by HR head Jackie Reses, who noted, in part: &#8220;Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.&#8221; Along with an incomprehensible aside about the &#8220;cable guy,&#8221; there were few details.</p>
<p>And because Yahoo PR&#8217;s goal is to not comment, except when pushing shiny new products, it was disinclined to say anything at all once the memo was public. <strong>ATD</strong> reported initially it was a couple hundred employees, but the memo made it unclear who would be impacted and how. Yahoo later made an unusually bloodless statement that work from home was not what was right for the company at that time, given its need to turn itself around.</p>
<p>Mayer underscored that point in her keynote speech, with <a href="http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/04/19/marissa-mayer-telecommuting/">Fortune reporting</a> that she put up an image of a purple elephant with WFH letters on its side and said, &#8220;I need to talk about the elephant in the room.&#8221; </p>
<p>She also tried to push blame onto, well, I am not sure whom, noting, &#8220;It was wrongly perceived as an industry narrative.&#8221; This mistakes-were-made tactic was clever, but the situation spun out of control simply due to the fact that Mayer was tin-eared on a hot-button issue and was poorly advised not to give a quick and cogent explanation of it at the time, causing a lot of unnecessary external and internal confusion and worry.</p>
<p>What was too bad was Mayer had a valid enough point &#8212; even if it was very harsh medicine to end the popular policy &#8212; that Yahoo probably needs all hands on deck right now to return to innovative relevance. She also said in her speech that while &#8220;people are more productive when they&#8217;re alone &#8230; they&#8217;re more collaborative and innovative when they&#8217;re together. Some of the best ideas come from pulling two different ideas together.&#8221;</p>
<p>As I said, it&#8217;s an excellent point, even if how Mayer delivered her message turned out to be a lesson as a new CEO in how it&#8217;s not what you say, but <em>how</em> you say it. And, of course, when.</p>

<p>According to sources, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone is close to launching a new startup called Jelly, which one person called a &#8220;native mobile&#8221; effort.</p>
<p>While it&#8217;s not clear exactly what that means, sources said the well-known entrepreneur has already hired four or five employees to form a team on the mystery product that will likely be aimed at smartphones and tablets.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an interesting move, since Stone is also running a small incubator called Obvious with one of his Twitter co-founders, Ev Williams. They left their daily roles at the high-profile microblogging service to create Obvious, which has startups such as Lift, Branch and Medium in its portfolio.</p>

<p>There has been low-level chatter in Silicon Valley about Stone&#8217;s startup, which some have taken to mean he is no longer working as much with Williams at Obvious. But sources said that is not the case and both are involved in helping their small group of startups.</p>
<p>That said, Williams has been focusing more on Medium, an effort to rejigger blogging and content platforms. Meanwhile, another Obvious principal, Jason Goldman, has been focused on Branch, an online conversation-focused site.</p>
<p>Presumably, Obvious will invest in Jelly, but that&#8217;s not clear.</p>

<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg might still be trying to figure out the social networking giant&#8217;s mobile monetization strategy, but there&#8217;s one thing she has locked: The top spot on two of the most important bestseller lists at the same time.</p>
<p>This week, for the first time, her <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130224/old-media-doesnt-get-new-media-chapter-203-the-sheryl-sandberg-attack/">&#8220;Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead&#8221;</a> ranked No. 1 on the influential New York Times list for hardcover nonfiction, as well as for combined print and e-book nonfiction. The list, which appears in this coming Sunday&#8217;s issue of the New York Times Book Review, actually reflects sales for the week ending March 16, 2013.</p>
<p>&#8220;Lean In&#8221; has been on Amazon&#8217;s top 100 list of all books for much longer &#8212; in fact, for 32 days. The tome on the many difficulties faced by women in the workforce reached No. 1 status several weeks ago.</p>

<p>The official release date of the book was March 11, which was followed by a publicity blitz of massive proportions, including the cover of Time magazine, huge takeouts in innumerable newspapers, and laudatory television pieces on &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; and with Oprah Winfrey.</p>
<p>&#8220;Lean In&#8221; has also attracted a huge dollop of controversy, with everyone and their mother (and my mother, Lucky, too) arguing over its merits, as well as its message &#8212; including whether Sandberg blamed women too much for the lack of advancement in the executive ranks.</p>
<p>She doesn&#8217;t, actually &#8212; if you read it, which many pundits appear to not have done. But that has not stopped the rigorous and welcome debate over the important issue, which seems to be exactly what Sandberg was aiming for.</p>
<p>Sales appear to have been widespread, but seem to also be helped by big purchases by companies such as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130313/telling-employees-hes-not-walked-the-talk-ciscos-john-chambers-leans-in-on-women-in-the-workplace/">Cisco</a>, which are encouraging employees to read it.</p>

<p>Earlier today, Yahoo said it had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130325/yahoo-acquires-hipster-mobile-news-reader-summly-like-we-said-it-might/">acquired the trendy and decidedly stylish news reading app Summly</a>, along with its telegenic and very young entrepreneur Nick D&#8217;Aloisio. </p>
<p>Yahoo said it plans to close down the actual app and use the algorithmic summation technology that the 17-year-old D&#8217;Aloisio built with a small team of five, along with a major assist from Silicon Valley research institute SRI International, throughout its products.  </p>
<p>While Yahoo did not disclose the price, several sources told me that the company paid $30 million &#8212; 90 percent in cash and 10 percent in stock &#8212; to buy the London-based Apple smartphone app.</p>
<p>And despite its elegant delivery, that&#8217;s a very high price, especially since Summly has been downloaded slightly less than one million times since launch &#8212; after a quick start amid much publicity over its founder &#8212; with about 90 million &#8220;summaries&#8221; read. Of course, like many such apps, it also had no monetization plan as yet.</p>
<p>What Yahoo is getting, though, is perhaps more valuable &#8212; the ability to put the fresh-faced D&#8217;Aloisio front and center of its noisy efforts to make consumers see Yahoo as a mobile-first company. That has been the goal of CEO Marissa Mayer, who has bought up a range of small mobile startups since she took over nine months ago and who has talked about the need for Yahoo to focus on the mobile arena above all.</p>
<p>Mayer met with D&#8217;Aloisio, said sources, although the deal was struck by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130307/loose-lips-yahoo-ma-head-tells-employees-company-looking-at-two-significant-and-a-half-dozen-small-buys/">voluble M&#038;A head Jackie Reses</a>.</p>
<p>Said one person close to the deal, about the founder: &#8220;Nick will be a great person to put in front of the media and consumers with Mayer to make Yahoo seem like it is a place that loves both entrepreneurs and mobile experiences, which in turn will presumably attract others like him.&#8221;</p>
<p>Having met the young man in question, who was in San Francisco in the fall on a fundraising trip, I can see the appeal. He&#8217;s both well-spoken and adorkable, as well as very adept at charming cranky media types like me by radiating with the kinetic energy of someone born in the mobile world (you can see that in full force in the video below with actor and Summly investor Stephen Fry). </p>
<p>Still, D&#8217;Aloisio is very young and presumably has a lot of other entrepreneurial goals and that&#8217;s why he agreed as part of the deal to only officially stay 18 months at Yahoo, multiple sources told me. In many cases, startup founders strike such short-term employment deals with big companies, agreeing to stay for a certain determined time period. </p>
<p>He will also remain in England, where he lives with his parents, said sources. In addition, only two of Summly&#8217;s employees will go to Yahoo with D&#8217;Aloisio. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s $10 million each, along with a nifty app Yahoo will not be using as is (too bad, as it would up the hip and fun factor of Yahoo&#8217;s apps by a factor of a gazillion if it were maintained). </p>
<p>&#8220;It works out on a lot of levels,&#8221; said another person close to the situation. &#8220;Nick is a founder that will make Mayer and Yahoo look cutting edge.&#8221; </p>
<p>Cue the parade of PR profiles of the young genius made millionaire, helping Yahoo become relevant again.</p>
<p>I have an email for comment into the always friendly D&#8217;Aloisio. But I don&#8217;t expect a reply, since he has apparently been specifically instructed by the martinets of Yahoo PR not to talk to me any longer &#8212; well, for 18 months at least! (Don&#8217;t worry, Nick, I don&#8217;t blame you and will still listen to whatever you are pitching next, since you are so <em>dang</em> compelling and I enjoyed using Summly!)</p>

<p>Yahoo has bought Summly, the mobile news reader app founded by a young British entrepreneur.</p>
<p>In a statement, the London-based company said it had bought the tiny outfit, which will close its app. The price was not disclosed (although I will try to find out soon enough). But the company had been seeking additional funding recently at a big valuation, in stark contrast to its small size (less than one million downloads), staff (five) and business model (zero revenue).</p>
<p>(<strong>Update</strong>: Sources tell me Yahoo paid just about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130325/yahoo-paid-30-million-in-cash-for-18-months-of-young-summly-entrepreneurs-time/">$30 million for Summly</a>, mostly in cash, with 10 percent in stock, for three employees.)</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121213/mobilemobilemobile-yahoo-eyes-hipster-teen-founded-summly-news-app/"><strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> reported in December</a> that Yahoo was looking closely at the startup, with CEO Marissa Mayer meeting with its founder Nick D&#8217;Aloisio. As we noted then, Yahoo was aiming at trendy mobile &#8220;acq-hires&#8221; to give the sleepy Silicon Valley Internet giant some sizzle and improve its moribund mobile offerings.</p>
<p>Mayer has been buying up a range of similar small mobile startups, largely for their teams of talented and innovative engineers. And, at a recent employee meeting, its M&#038;A head Jackie Reses said the Silicon Valley company was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130307/loose-lips-yahoo-ma-head-tells-employees-company-looking-at-two-significant-and-a-half-dozen-small-buys/">looking at two significant purchases and a half-dozen smaller ones.</a> </p>
<p>Said Yahoo: &#8220;Founder Nick D&#8217;Aloisio and the Summly team are joining Yahoo! in the coming weeks. While the Summly app will close, we will acquire the technology and you&#8217;ll see it come to life throughout Yahoo!&#8217;s mobile experiences soon. We&#8217;re not disclosing purchase price or other terms of the deal.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yahoo mobile head Adam Cahan <a href="http://ycorpblog.com/2013/03/25/yahoo-to-acquire-summly/">wrote a blog post</a> about the deal, as <a href="http://summly.com/">did D&#8217;Aloisio</a>, who also tweeted news of it:</p>

<p>News readers have been getting snapped up of late. CNN <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">acquired Zite for $20 million in 2011</a>, while we reported that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130311/whos-about-to-acquire-news-reading-app-pulse-because-someone-is/">LinkedIn was in the midst of buying Pulse for upwards of $50 million</a>. </p>
<p>The 17-year-old D&#8217;Aloisio created the high-profile news reading app, which garnered much attention in the last year in the mobile space, which is probably what attracted Yahoo to it. </p>
<p>As I wrote:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>D&#8217;Aloisio &#8212; who looks like he could easily be a member of One Direction if this tech thing did not work out &#8212; is perhaps a perfect storm for Yahoo, which is seeking to show that it can attract innovative, young entrepreneurs to the company, while also looking to strengthen its nearly bare mobile cupboard.</p>
<p>Summly is all that and a bag of (fish and) chips, with a very slick app for the Apple iPhone that has become one of the more popular in the App Store since it was re-launched last month. The company has said it has been downloaded 500,000 times.</p>
<p>It deserves the attention, as it is a pleasure to use &#8212; think an even hipper version of Flipboard with some more sass. The handsomely designed app summarizes news stories &#8212; all using a natural language processing algorithm &#8212; in only a few sentences and in under 400 characters. Users can then swipe through topics and stories quickly and click in to be directed to the full story on the original news site. </p>
<p>Summly originally started as a prototype app called Trimit, which soon garnered attention and seed funding from Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing&#8217;s investment firm. In no time, it had a range of other investors, ponying up about $1.5 million, including trendy ones like Ashton Kutcher and tech types like Zynga&#8217;s Mark Pincus, Automattic&#8217;s Matt Mullenweg and Airbnb&#8217;s Brian Chesky.</p>
<p>Since then, it has been striking content deals, including with News Corp. (which owns this site) and others, which seem to be attracted by its investor pedigree, its solid technology and &#8212; perhaps most of all &#8212; its media-darling founder.</p></blockquote>

<p>As most of the free world knows by now &#8212; from the ubiquitous media coverage that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130224/old-media-doesnt-get-new-media-chapter-203-the-sheryl-sandberg-attack/">Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and her new book</a>, &#8220;Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead,&#8221; has gotten of late &#8212; there are some nagging issues of women in the workplace.</p>
<p>That was also underscored by the huge debate that arose over Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer&#8217;s new rule for the Silicon Valley Internet giant that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/physically-together-heres-the-internal-yahoo-no-work-from-home-memo-which-extends-beyond-remote-workers/">eliminated work-from-home employees</a>.</p>
<p>Now, Cisco CEO John Chambers is weighing in, after a meeting with Sandberg last week, ordering each of his top managers to come up with new women-focused initiatives and put them into their development plans.</p>
<p>More interestingly, in an internal email I obtained, he also noted that his own leadership in the area had been lacking.</p>
<p>&#8220;While I have always considered myself sensitive to and effective on gender issues in the workplace, my eyes were opened in new ways and I feel a renewed sense of urgency to make the progress we haven&#8217;t made in the last decade,&#8221; wrote Chambers.</p>
<p>He pointed out that only one-fourth of the networking giant&#8217;s employees and top execs are women, and only 20 percent out of one million networking academy students are women. Currently, Cisco&#8217;s highest-ranking woman is Padmasree Warrior, its CTO and strategy officer, and it has three women board members.</p>
<p>Still, wrote Chambers:</p>
<p>&#8220;After reading Lean In and listening to Sheryl, I realize that, while I believe I am relatively enlightened, I have not consistently walked the talk &#8230; What we have been doing hasn&#8217;t worked, and it is time to adjust.&#8221;</p>

<p>To my leaders:</p>
<p>I had the opportunity yesterday to discuss Sheryl Sandberg&#8217;s new book Lean In with Sheryl and a group of my CEO peers. While I have always considered myself sensitive to and effective on gender issues in the workplace, my eyes were opened in new ways and I feel a renewed sense of urgency to make the progress we haven&#8217;t made in the last decade.</p>
<p>The data is startling. Women hold less than 14% of CEO positions, 17% of board seats globally, and 18% of congressional officials &#8230; and these numbers have not changed in a decade.  At Cisco, less than 25% of our employees &#8212; and our leaders &#8212; are women. Only 20% of our current one-million networking academy students are women. </p>
<p>Today is International Working Women’s Day, and I want us, the leaders of Cisco, to see this as a leadership moment. Without realizing it, we operate every day with gender stereotypes and biases, many of which we do not realize. After reading Lean In and listening to Sheryl, I realize that, while I believe I am relatively enlightened, I have not consistently walked the talk. I think each of you, on reflection, will identify opportunities to operate at a new level with your women employees, leaders, customers, partners, and peers.  I believe we &#8212; together &#8212; need to drive a fundamental culture change and it is up to us as leaders to make this change happen. What we have been doing hasn&#8217;t worked, and it is time to adjust.</p>
<p>I have two specific asks for each of you: 1) please read the copy of Lean In you will be receiving shortly, before we get to the SVP/VP off-site and 2) determine 3-4 specific things you will do differently and detail those commitments in your development plan and if you need help, please contact Sandy Hoffman, Chief Diversity Officer. </p>
<p>I know each of us will have a different explanation and a different solution, and there is power in the diversity of those ideas in driving change. I am asking two champions &#8212; Chuck Robbins and Kelly Kramer &#8212; to take a leadership role in moving us forward. I will ask them to report to the Operating Committee every quarter on the progress we have made and the action plans in place.</p>
<p>I think Sheryl says it best: &#8220;We can no longer pretend that biases don&#8217;t exist, nor can we talk around them &#8230; the result of creating a more equal environment will not just be better performance for our organizations, but quite likely greater happiness for all.&#8221;</p>

<p>Alibaba Group said it had selected Jonathan Lu Zhaoxi to replace its co-founder and CEO Jack Ma, starting on May 10. Ma, who is only 48 years old, will remain executive chairman, and will be involved in the Chinese Internet e-commerce giant&#8217;s business strategy and management development. Alibaba has seen tremendous growth in the last year, as it is has increased both its revenue and profit, and many expect it will go public within the next 12 months. The strong performance has, in turn, boosted the stock of Yahoo, which owns a 20 percent stake in the company.</p>
<p>Lu, 43, has been at Alibaba for more than a dozen years, leading major divisions of the company, including its massive and important Taobao unit. He is currently Alibaba&#8217;s chief data officer and president of Aliyun Mobile OS.</p>
<p>&#8220;Serving as Alibaba Group CEO is an extremely challenging and difficult job, especially succeeding a founder CEO like me. One can only imagine the responsibilities and pressure that Jonathan will shoulder,&#8221; said Ma in a letter to employees. &#8220;Alibaba has never been only the CEO’s business, it is everybody&#8217;s business.&#8221;</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>Lu joined Alibaba in 2000, a year after the company was founded as an Internet directory allowing China&#8217;s increasingly competitive factories to more easily connect with international buyers. After forming Alibaba.com&#8217;s sales team for South China, including manufacturing powerhouse Guangdong Province, Lu in 2004 led the launch of Alipay, the company&#8217;s online payments affiliate. He later served as Alipay&#8217;s president.</p>
<p>In early 2008 Lu moved to Taobao, China&#8217;s dominant online retailing platform. During his tenure Taobao&#8217;s GMV (total sales generated by sellers using the platform) soared eightfold, and the online shopping unit began developing and integrating social networking into e-commerce.</p>
<p>Lu, who holds a master&#8217;s degree in business administration from China Europe International Business School in Shanghai, was named chief executive officer of Alibaba.com in early 2011, presiding over the privatization of the business-to-business trading website the following year.</p>
<p>Since July 2012, Lu has been an Alibaba executive vice president and the Group&#8217;s chief data officer. In this role, he has been responsible for driving the company&#8217;s strategically important Big Data initiative, centered on the creation of a data-sharing platform that can be accessed by the millions of small businesses that use Alibaba services. He is also responsible for Alibaba&#8217;s Aliyun mobile device operating system.</p></blockquote>

<p>Lost in the sauce of the national work-from-home debate of last week that engulfed all things Yahoo, was a fascinating tidbit that several employees passed on to me from a recent Friday FYI meeting at its Silicon Valley HQ.</p>
<p>At the gathering, CEO Marissa Mayer talked briefly about the new telecommuting arrangements for some staffers, including the controversial new work-from-home memo that HR head Jackie Reses had issued that day.</p>
<p>But when Reses &#8212; who also wears another corporate hat as head of M&#038;A at Yahoo &#8212; spoke she mentioned to the crowd that Yahoo was working on two &#8220;significant&#8221; acquisitions and about six smaller talent &#8220;acqhires.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It was kind of odd to telegraph it in such a big forum,&#8221; said one employee of Reses&#8217; comments at the meeting in late February.</p>
<p>The revelation was unusual, to be sure, but perhaps not a surprise, given the recent run-up in Yahoo stock, its healthy cash position and, most of all, its need to add meaningful growth to the current efforts at turnaround.</p>
<p>And while some of its recent buys have been interesting and focused on improving its moribund mobile efforts, they have also been very small. And, as one high-ranking exec there told me, they &#8220;don&#8217;t move the needle in the way we need to in bringing in senior talent or loads of users or serious revenue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, while Yahoo shares have benefited greatly from the impressive performance by Alibaba Group in China, which is clearly on a roll, many think that showing actual improvement in its core business will be critical in the months ahead. </p>
<p>While making changes to Yahoo&#8217;s homepage and email, as well as cutting products, has been done, it is not yet clear what the impact is; the changes are aimed more at holding on to consumers rather than exciting them with new offerings.</p>
<p>Yahoo could also create its own new products to wow the masses, but that has been harder for it over the years. (Remember Livestand? Yeah, not so much.) In any case, an innovation infusion of such a large magnitude will take some time, given Mayer has to get the right people into place to do so.</p>
<p>Thus, a big purchase of an exciting new company with prominent leadership seems more likely than not and sooner than later. While Mayer has not articulated her vision for the new Yahoo in anything more than general ways, what she buys will say a lot.</p>
<p>Thus, sources said that Yahoo has been looking at a range of such acquisitions, in a number of categories such as advertising tech, mobile monetization and, of course, consumer &#8220;daily delight,&#8221; which is a phrase Mayer has used a lot.</p>
<p>It would be bold if Mayer went all out and made a mega-buy that would shake up the competitive landscape. My first choice for that is Pinterest, the scrapbooking phenom that was just valued at $2.5 billion in a new funding round. Mayer has also shown a lot of interest in blogging superstar Tumblr, while at both Google and Yahoo, as well as Foursquare, the well-known location app. Of course, there is also the troubled gaming giant, Zynga.</p>
<p>All are very pricey and would face rival interest, but such a move would be akin to Facebook&#8217;s billion-dollar blockbuster purchase of Instagram. Many now think that was prescient and cheap, given how important mobile photos are to the current digital ecosystem.</p>
<p>The list of possible big deals goes on: Hulu (which needs a tasty content element to make sense) as a video play; Millennial Media or Jumptap for mobile advertising; Quora for social answers; Flipboard for social media consumption; Rubicon or PubMatic, for ad targeting; and many more.</p>
<p>But all of those begin at the billion-dollar or more range and I have checked with a number of these and come up peanuts. Still, there are a whole lot of choices for Mayer and Yahoo in the $200 million to $500 million price range.</p>
<p>Here, Yahoo has the financial strength to make at least two of these significant purchases that Reses mentioned, as well as developing a much better reputation for Yahoo to keep real talent interested.</p>
<p>As one prominent startup exec, who had told me he never would consider selling to Yahoo in the past, said recently: &#8220;They are no longer complete losers, although Facebook and Google and Apple and Amazon are still cooler.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hey, it&#8217;s a compliment, even if it&#8217;s a back-handed one, so it will be interesting to see who finds Yahoo cool enough. </p>

<p>Last week, the fight between Apple and pugnacious hedge fund investor David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital went all flat when <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130301/einhorns-greenlight-drops-apple-suit/">he withdrew a lawsuit</a> after the company yanked a proxy proposal that would have allowed shareholders to vote on eliminating preferred stock from the company charter.</p>
<p>But the real issue at the core of the fight &#8212; the massive mountain of $137 billion in a cash hoard that Apple holds and that Einhorn wants it to distribute in some fashion to shareholders &#8212; still remains. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear what Apple will do now, especially since a lot of it is overseas. But execs have indicated that they are evaluating what to do to best serve nervous investors, who have <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130303/up-is-down-and-down-is-up-yahoo-stock-waxes-while-apple-wanes/">bidded the stock down 40 percent</a> since the fall. While it&#8217;s not clear what that will be, it&#8217;s also pretty likely Apple will do something.</p>
<p>Until the company decides, though, I have some good ideas for CEO Tim Cook to consider:</p>
<p>* Apple could purchase 1,567,506 <a href="http://www.teslamotors.com/models/options">Tesla Model S Performance</a> vehicles with 85 kWh battery and a carbon fiber spoiler at $87,400 each, which would effectively allow <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/297321/">CEO Elon Musk to buy the New York Times</a> (a bargain at $1.42 billion!) and use it as his own personal blog.</p>
<p>* It could buy 17.9 houses for each <a href="http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/YHOO/1957297660x5874723x631091/2656558a-d8ff-42bf-86b5-084e64830035/Q4'12%20Earnings%20Presentation.vsFINAL.pdf">Yahoo employee</a> located near its Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ, so they could be super-close to work, per <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/physically-together-heres-the-internal-yahoo-no-work-from-home-memo-which-extends-beyond-remote-workers/">CEO Marissa Mayer&#8217;s wishes</a>. That breaks down to 206,015 overall homes for 11,500 workers, at a <a href="http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/Sunnyvale-California/market-trends/">median sales price</a> of $665,000 for the area.</p>
<p>* Apple could acquire a big chunk of the Internet all at once, including Groupon ($3.36 billion), Yahoo ($25.95 billion), Facebook ($61.7 billion), Twitter ($10 billion), LinkedIn ($18.32 billion), Yelp ($1.47 billion), AOL ($2.81 billion), Pandora ($2.09 billion), Zynga ($2.69 billion), OpenTable ($1.32 billion) and, finally, Pinterest ($2.5 billion). Phew.</p>
<p>* It could pay Andrew Mason&#8217;s $378.36 severance after getting jacked as CEO of Groupon 364,013,179 times over.</p>
<p>* Apple could pay for 97,857 parties for Yammer&#8217;s David Sacks&#8217;s 40th birthday (at $1.4 million each). Snoop Dogg included.</p>
<p>* It could foot the bill for the budget cuts to save the U.S. government $85 billion this year, so Americans could stop having to say &#8220;sequester.&#8221;</p>
<p>* Apple could buy $329 16 gigabyte Wi-Fi iPad minis for 416,413,374 people &#8212; everyone in the U.S. (315,429,318), plus France and Spain.</p>
<p>* Or it could just give the 7,069,909,686 people on the planet $19.38 each, and call it a day.</p>
<p>* Apple could use $1 bills to carpet an area of 560 square miles, which would more than cover Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>* Finally &#8212; and I think this would be a nice gesture to make up for calling his efforts a &#8220;silly sideshow&#8221; &#8212; Apple could give Einhorn 15.56 times the value of his $8.8 billion fund.</p>
<p>Or, of course, <em>not</em>.</p>

<p>Video conferencing company <a href="http://bluejeans.com/">Blue Jeans Network</a>, which is obviously a big supporter of working from home for employees, is putting its money where its telecommuting mouth is to speak out on the debate that was spurred by Yahoo CEO Marissa&#8217;s Mayer new rule to ban the practice at her company.</p>
<p>Thus, the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120627/blue-jeans-network-switzerland-of-video-conference-streams-raises-25-million/">startup</a> is putting up a billboard on Highway 101, just north of San Francisco Airport on the tech-commuting path, which you can see above. Calling itself the &#8220;The unofficial sponsor of WFH,&#8221; it urges Mayer to call the company &#8212; &#8220;We can help.&#8221;</p>
<p>(<em>Cheeky!</em> I like it.)</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://bluejeans.com/blog/marissa-mayer-work-from-home">blog post about the controversy</a>, Blue Jeans noted: </p>
<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s right for Yahoo, however, is against almost every workforce trend. Telecommuting is here to stay. In competitive hiring environments, working from home is undoubtedly an enticing perk that employers can extend to tip the scales.&#8221;</p>

<p>At a Morgan Stanley investment conference today, the affable Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman put in an appearance to talk about life at Yahoo since <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120925/yahoos-mayer-finally-parts-ways-with-cfo-tim-morse/">he got there last fall</a>.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, he said almost nothing new in an onstage interview and, more importantly, did not address the hot-button controversy around the work-from-home ban that CEO Marissa Mayer instituted last week.</p>
<p>To be fair, that&#8217;s because Goldman was not asked by anyone about the issue, which is perhaps not a surprise at these hand-holding investor events. But he did make a veiled reference when touting its &#8220;strong leadership&#8221; now. </p>
<p>&#8220;What gives people confidence is that we&#8217;re making decisions,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The worst thing to do in a company is to waffle.&#8221; But Goldman then added obliquely that some people like those decisions and &#8220;some people don&#8217;t.&#8221;</p>
<p>No, they <em>don&#8217;t</em>! Woo-hee, has this one blown up!</p>
<p>The work-from-home debate has certainly exploded across the landscape this week, after an edict to eliminate the long-time employee policy at Yahoo, especially since most other <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130225/survey-says-despite-yahoo-ban-most-tech-companies-support-work-from-home-for-employees/">Internet companies tout flexible work arrangements</a>.</p>
<p>But, apparently, Mayer thinks Yahoos have abused the privilege &#8212; she noted at an employee meeting last week that VPN logs showed work-at-home staff did not sign on enough &#8212; and a Yahoo internal memo said that working <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/physically-together-heres-the-internal-yahoo-no-work-from-home-memo-which-extends-beyond-remote-workers/">&#8220;physically together&#8221;</a> was the way to reenergize the lagging fortunes at the company. </p>
<p>Opinions inside Yahoo about the topic have been mixed but heated, essentially pitting employees against each other in an awkward way. But the reaction from outside the company has been decidedly negative. </p>
<p>At the Morgan event in San Francisco, Goldman instead focused on the sunnier side of the street at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, noting the Mayer regime was focused on increasing user engagement, international presence and broadening its demographics.</p>
<p>&#8220;The thing that just struck me over and over is how much has been done by this company that is really new,&#8221; said Goldman, pointing inevitably to the new free food policy &#8212; which has long been common across Silicon Valley &#8212; as well as a quarterly goal system, employee reviews, weekly FYI meetings and more. </p>
<p>Referring to internal polls showing increased confidence among staff, he added: &#8220;What really strikes me is how much has been done to really improve the quality of life at Yahoo.&#8221;</p>
<p>Goldman also touched on the need to increase revenue, spur innovation and also some upgrades of core products such as Yahoo Mail and its famous homepage, although leaving out that this had been in the works before the new leadership team was in place.</p>
<p>He also talked, as Mayer has a lot, about the importance of mobile to the future there, noting that the mobile revenue was still &#8220;modest.&#8221; (Goldman declined to say just how modest, but <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130215/when-mayer-called-yahoos-mobile-revenue-nascent-she-wasnt-kidding-and-heres-the-actual-number-she-left-out/">I posted that depressing number here</a>.)</p>
<p>&#8220;We just got into this is a major way,&#8221; he said, asking investors for patience to get up to mobile speed at Yahoo. &#8220;I think we have been clear it will take us some time, but we have taken some positive steps.&#8221;</p>

<p>High-profile Silicon Valley entrepreneur Max Levchin is launching a new mobile payments startup today called <a href="http://www.affirm.com">Affirm</a>. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s the first project emerging from Levchin&#8217;s San Francisco tech incubator Hard, Valuable, Fun (HVF), which he started after selling his last company &#8212; Slide &#8212; to Google and then eventually leaving the search giant. Previous to that, Levchin and investor Peter Thiel had sold PayPal to eBay.</p>
<p>While it might seem at first as if Affirm is in direct competition with other mobile payments-focused companies such as Square and Stripe, it seems to be aimed at another layer of the value chain in an effort to improve conversion for mobile payments. </p>
<p>In fact, Stripe &#8212; in which Levchin is an investor, too &#8212; will be processing credit card payments on the back end.</p>
<p>But it will be an uphill battle for Levchin in the current payments arena, with a range of challenges from a multitude of rivals to regulatory scrutiny to the risks associated with credit in general. </p>
<p>Its most similar competitor, for example, is Klarna, a hugely funded company based in Sweden that offers payment solutions for a wide range of online storefronts across Europe that did $200 million in revenue last year. Klarna, which means &#8220;clear&#8221; in Swedish, is likely to be eying the U.S. market and has well-regard VC Mike Moritz of Sequoia Capital on its board. </p>
<p>As part of its effort, Affirm will use Facebook for authentication of consumers, and also use a number of other social and data signals to assess risk. It will then guarantee payment to merchants &#8212; who will pay Affirm a fee &#8212; after this check. </p>
<p>&#8220;We are trying to get as close as possible to one-click, which has always been the case on the desktop,&#8221; said Levchin in an interview today. &#8220;In mobile, it has become an imperative to be able to buy it now or you lose a customer quickly.&#8221;</p>
<p>Levchin described Affirm as a digital charge card rather than a credit card, trying to be valuable to merchants by lowering the abandonment rate of mobile transactions. Affirm&#8217;s beta launch retail partner is 1-800-Flowers.</p>
<p>&#8220;You will essentially be putting a purchase on a digital tab, and we are going to make it work for us by looking at all available data to determine if you are someone who will pay it back,&#8221; said Levchin. </p>
<p>Like an American Express or other charge card, consumers will have about 30 days to settle bills, although Affirm will not be making any money from them.</p>
<p>As to why he decided to enter the increasingly competitive online payment space &#8212; which is also rife with regulatory and fraud issues &#8212; Levchin said that his efforts at PayPal did not go far enough.</p>
<p>&#8220;Payments online are still too hard &#8212; we started the revolution with PayPal and democratized payments for small businesses, but we stopped short of changing the system,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The world is now awash in data and we can see consumers in a lot clearer ways.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition, he added, the &#8220;overwhelming transformation of everything toward mobile changes all the fundamentals.&#8221;</p>
<p>Relying on Facebook could be an issue, of course, opening up a thicket of privacy issues and also worrisome reliance on the social networking giant. But Levchin said that Affirm&#8217;s system depends on the company for confirming identity more than anything else and there will eventually be a number of ways to do that.</p>
<p>Other data Affirm will be using, he said, range from incomes per zip code and even a user&#8217;s mobile device ID.</p>
<p>Affirm has been funded by Levchin and a group of friends in the &#8220;low-digit millions,&#8221; he said, with only a few dozen employees compared to bigger mobile payments efforts from others.</p>
<p>He said he knows the risk of entering the space, especially given that there are only so many solutions and a limited retailer attention.</p>
<p>Still, Levchin noted: &#8220;I just think there is so much more to do. Technology has come a long way since PayPal.&#8221;</p>

<p>Last week, a fierce debate erupted over a range of social networks and in the media about a story we posted on Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer&#8217;s new decree that employees at the Silicon Valley Internet company would no longer be able to work from home. </p>
<p>In a sometimes awkwardly worded <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/physically-together-heres-the-internal-yahoo-no-work-from-home-memo-which-extends-beyond-remote-workers/">internal memo I posted</a> from Yahoo HR head Jackie Reses, the company rolled out the new rule &#8212; pushed through by Mayer &#8212; which requires that Yahoo employees who work remotely relocate to company facilities by June 1. </p>
<p>&#8220;Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home,&#8221; read the memo to employees. &#8220;We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.&#8221;</p>
<p>The goal of Mayer to cure what ails Yahoo: Reviving a moribund and enervated workforce that has struggled to innovate and excel over many years. One of the many problems has been the liberal use of work-from-home policies that have been woefully mismanaged to create a culture that is simply not energized. </p>
<p>But, unless I am reading the memo wrong, the ban is not just limited to those who have arrangements to work from home full time &#8212; which number in the hundreds &#8212; but also employees who take one or two days a week at home. </p>
<p>Top sources told me that Mayer has been particularly irked about Yahoo parking lots that are slow to fill in the morning and quick to empty by 5 pm &#8212; which is atypical at other tech companies such as Google. (Mayer was a longtime exec at the search giant.)</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/url4.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/url4.png" alt="url" width="380" height="253" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-298116" /></a></p>
<p>At first, she tried to change culture in ways that rained down tasty perks on employees &#8212; such as free food and smartphones. Mayer has also been practical, instituting please-be-here Friday afternoon FYI weekly meetings and stricter performance reviews.</p>
<p>But she is now inevitably doling out more unpleasant medicine to the troops, starting with the banning of work from home, which has caused a big ruckus both internally and externally. </p>
<p>Some inside the company are clearly appalled, especially since it might more severely impact working mothers.</p>
<p>&#8220;When a working mother is standing behind this, you know we are a long way from a culture that will honor the thankless sacrifices that women too often make,&#8221; read one email I got from an internal source, referring to the recent birth of Mayer&#8217;s baby. </p>
<p>Many others at Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ pointed to the nursery Mayer had built &#8212; for which she paid personally &#8212; next to her office as a perk others at Yahoo do not get. </p>
<p>&#8220;I wonder what would happen if my wife brought our kids and nanny to work and set em up in the cube next door?&#8221; joked a husband of another employee who will be losing her work-from-home privileges.</p>
<p>Yahoo employees, as far as I can see from its <a href="http://us.careers.yahoo.com/benefits/lang/en">company careers page</a>, offers the typical Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account, where staff can pay &#8220;dependent care expenses, such as day care or after-school care, with pre-tax dollars.&#8221;</p>
<p>While it is fair to raise the issue of how employees will cope given the sudden change in HR policy, others also think that limiting work at home is a good idea because it galvanizes culture and creates a spirit of collaboration that has been missing at Yahoo for far too long.</p>
<p>&#8220;Marissa is doing what good leaders do,&#8221; wrote one person on Twitter. &#8220;Making sure her Yahoo team is communicating &#038; working TOGETHER.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/url14.jpeg"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/url14-344x285.jpeg" alt="url" width="344" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-298122" /></a></p>
<p>That is actually a sentiment expressed by <a href="http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/business-it/do-as-we-say-not-as-we-do-googlers-dont-telecommute-20130219-2eo8w.html">Google CFO Patrick Pichette at a recent talk in Australia</a>, when asked about telecommuting at Google:</p>
<p>&#8220;The surprising question we get is: &#8216;How many people telecommute at Google?&#8217; And our answer is: &#8216;As few as possible&#8217; &#8230; There is something magical about sharing meals. There is something magical about spending the time together, about noodling on ideas, about asking at the computer &#8216;What do you think of this?&#8217; These are [the] magical moments that we think at Google are immensely important in the development of your company, of your own personal development and [of] building much stronger communities.&#8221;</p>
<p>That said, officially, many Googlers are allowed and even encouraged to work at home. The company told me when asked about work-from-home policies: &#8220;We do not have a formal policy and leave Googlers to use good judgment.&#8221;</p>
<p>It is the same for Facebook, which confirmed a &#8220;policy to provide flexibility as work permits.&#8221; In fact, one exec at the social network giant noted to me that its entire camera app was built from an engineer&#8217;s garage, with the group staying away from the office as long as they wanted to build it from home.</p>
<p>Business networking site LinkedIn also said it had &#8220;no formal policy at present,&#8221; but noted that many employees work from home full-time and part-time as the situation warrants and in consultation with managers.</p>
<p>It goes on and on like that throughout the tech scene, part of an ethos of letting tech talent make its own rules &#8212; from what they wear to when and where they work &#8212; that is deeply ingrained in the culture.</p>

<p>A Hewlett-Packard spokesperson said of the tech giant: &#8220;We do not ban [work from home] and many HP people do it &#8230; it is not at all an issue at HP and hasn&#8217;t been for years. Some folks have a regular schedule, while others can do it from time to time with the okay of their supervisors.&#8221;</p>
<p>An AOL spokesperson said the company doesn&#8217;t ban work from home.</p>
<p>A Netflix spokesperson referenced a well-known premium video company&#8217;s job deck, which stressed a &#8220;freedom and responsibility culture&#8221; and notes, &#8220;We don&#8217;t measure people by how many hours they work or how much they are in the office. We do care about accomplishing great work.&#8221;</p>
<p>Twitter had a different twist, but still supports working from home. Said a spokesperson: &#8220;We believe there are significant tangible and intangible benefits when employees are working under the same roof. We also recognize that every so often it&#8217;s important to be able to work remotely, and we allow for that flexibility.&#8221;</p>
<p>A Cisco spokesperson said the networking company also allows it, but it has to be approved by a direct manager: &#8220;It is certainly utilized by those employees who earn it. And, of course, with our collaborative suite of technologies like Webex (with video) and telepresence it is the next best thing to being there in person.&#8221;</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman said that the software company &#8220;offers flexible work schedules for all employees.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps one of the best companies for a long time in the telecommuting space has been IBM. From its <a href="http://www.ibm.com/ibm/environment/climate/commuting.shtml">corporate Web page</a>, also touting the environmental benefits:</p>
<p>&#8220;IBM was one of the first global companies to pioneer programs to reduce employee commuting. It has sustained these programs for nearly two decades. Two key aspects are its (a) work-at-home program and (b) mobile employees program. Today, more than 128,000 (29 percent) of employees globally participate in one of these programs. In 2011, in just the U.S. alone, IBM&#8217;s work-at-home program conserved approximately 6.4 million gallons of fuel and avoided more than 50,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions.&#8221;</p>
<p>Startups are much the same.</p>
<p>Said an Airbnb spokesperson of the online housing rentals site: &#8220;It&#8217;s a flexible policy and managers determine what&#8217;s appropriate on a case-by-case basis.&#8221;</p>
<p>At location startup Foursquare, a spokesperson said, &#8220;Our policy is to allow for &#8216;flexible work hours&#8217; &#8212; and that applies to both the hours you work, and where you work from. While we don&#8217;t have any dedicated remote employees, our folks do work from home on occasion and we&#8217;re fine with that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Private social networking company Path is much the same, according to a spokesperson: &#8220;Path has a work-from-home policy. The manager and employee work out the details together.&#8221;</p>
<p>The only company I queried that did not respond immediately is Apple, which has been known for a long time to have much tighter rules with its employees. I will update when I hear from the company. </p>
<p>I also have emails in to Amazon, which is already known for flexible working policies. </p>
<p>But, overall, Mayer is forging new ground with her work-from-home ban. Whether that is enough to turbocharge the Yahoo culture is anybody&#8217;s guess.</p>

<p>Keith Rabois, the former Square COO who left the company in the midst of unproven allegations of personal misconduct, is weighing an offer to join Silicon Valley venture firm Khosla Ventures, according to sources close to the situation, and is currently leaning toward accepting the job there. </p>
<p>But, that could change. In an interesting twist, the longtime entrepreneur and investor has also been in discussions with Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky to become COO or president there.</p>
<p>Both the VC and the startup have been doing reference checks on Rabois, news of which has gotten out in the ever-chatty Silicon Valley scene. <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/02/23/airbnb-may-hire-former-square-exec-rabois-as-coo">The Wall Street Journal reported earlier today</a> that Rabois had been in talks with the San Francisco-based online housing rentals company.</p>
<p>But sources with knowledge of the situation said that Rabois &#8212; who has played the No. 2 to a string of high-profile entrepreneurs, including Peter Thiel at PayPal, Max Levchin at Slide and, most recently, Jack Dorsey at Square &#8212; seems  &#8220;99 percent&#8221; ready to move into a more formal investing role.</p>
<p>Of course, there is still that one percent chance he might not, underscored by the eternal lure of the hot startup for serial entrepreneurs like Rabois. That said, he has also been an active angel investors for many years, with a wide-ranging portfolio, and is on many boards, including Yelp&#8217;s.</p>
<p>The choice of two very attractive alternatives is in stark contrast to the more <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130125/keith-rabois-long-statement-on-personal-relationship-with-square-employee-sexual-harassment-claims-that-feels-like-a-shakedown/">tense situation for Rabois just a month ago</a>, after accusations of sexual harassment arose related to a relationship he had with a Square employee. </p>
<p>Rabois has denied the allegations aimed at him and at the San Francisco payments company, which have not yet turned into a lawsuit, and has thus far been backed by Square. Rabois called the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130125/exclusive-interview-keith-rabois-talks-about-sexual-harassment-claims-becoming-a-distraction-at-square-and-whats-next/">accusations by the employee &#8220;fiction&#8221; and a &#8220;shakedown.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>That said, due to the controversy around the serious workplace issue, he stepped down from his job as COO.</p>
<p>&#8220;At the end of the day, this is personally embarrassing to me, because when anyone’s life is exposed to a public forum, it creates quite a damaging situation,&#8221; said Rabois at the time in an interview with me. &#8220;As we looked at it, it was going to become a distraction that was going to hurt the company.&#8221;</p>

<p>Courtesy of a plethora of very irked Yahoo employees, here is the internal memo sent to the company about a new rule rolled out today by CEO Marissa Mayer, which requires that Yahoo employees who work remotely relocate to company facilities.</p>
<p>&#8220;Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home,&#8221; reads the memo to employees from HR head Jackie Reses. &#8220;We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.&#8221;</p>
<p>Painfully awkward as this is phrased, it means every Yahoo get to your desks <em>stat!</em></p>
<p>I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/yahoo-ceo-mayer-now-requiring-all-remote-employees-to-not-be-remote/">reported earlier today</a> that the move will apparently impact only several hundred employees, such as customer service reps, who work from home full time. But numerous sources told me that the decree extends to any staffers who might have arrangements to work from home just one or two days a week, too.</p>
<p>The changes begin in June, according to the Yahoo memo.</p>
<p>After that, employees who work from home must comply without exception or quit. One top manager was told that there would be little flexibility on the issue.</p>
<p>The anger from impacted employees was strong today, because many felt they were initially hired with the assumption that they could work more flexibly. </p>
<p>In fact, even waiting for the cable guy is questionable. &#8220;And, for the rest of us who occasionally have to stay home for the cable guy, please use your best judgment in the spirit of collaboration,&#8221; wrote Reses.</p>
<p>The tone and tactics have infuriated some at the company. Wrote one impacted Yahoo employee to me: &#8220;Even if that was what was previously agreed to with managers and HR, or was a part of the package to take a position, tough &#8230; It&#8217;s outrageous and a morale killer.&#8221;</p>
<p>Most tech companies encourage workers to stay on their campuses, offering free food and other perks. But none enforce such rules beyond staff needed to operate an office.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our engineers would not put up with that,&#8221; said one tech exec. &#8220;So, we&#8217;d never focus on it.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the comments section of my first story on the HR change at Yahoo, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg wrote:</p>
<p>&#8220;For anyone who enjoys working from wherever they like in the world, and is interested in WordPress, Automattic is 100% committed to being distributed. 130 of our 150 people are outside of San Francisco.&#8221;</p>
<p>The issue is an interesting and controversial one, with some certain that working at home is the wave of the future, while others considering it hurtful to productivity.</p>
<p>Well, we&#8217;ll presumably see which this way goes in time.</p>
<p>Earlier, when asked about the change, a Yahoo spokesperson said the company does not comment on internal matters. The memo was released after my story on the change was published this morning.</p>
<p>But, you don&#8217;t need any comment when you can read for yourself the new working order at the Silicon Valley Internet giant:</p>

<p>About two weeks ago, I heard about a restructuring under HBO SVP of consumer technology Otto Berkes, who also takes over the job of CTO in March from longtime vet Bob Zitter. The former Microsoft exec and Xbox co-founder was named the top tech figure at the premium cable network at the end of last year, after being the primary developer of its popular HBO Go and MAX Go streaming video offerings.</p>
<p>As part of the changes, the memo of the Time Warner unit said, product strategy and development exec Hans Deutmeyer is leaving HBO.</p>
<p>HBO has been very active in the digital space, increasingly offering its shows on a variety of mobile devices. Earlier this week, at our <strong>D: Dive Into Media</strong> conference, HBO said its subscribers will be able to stream programming from an Apple iPhone or iPad onto their television via AirPlay.</p>
<p>All the various details are below, in a memo HBO sent to its employees at the end of January:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>HBO GO has established HBO as a company that understands the value of technology as a tool for delivering great content and experiences to consumers, and HBO.com has become a primary means of driving broad consumer engagement and awareness of our offerings. We are proud of these achievements and also recognize that we have more ahead of us to accomplish. Over the course of the next several years, our mission is to build best-in-class technology execution capabilities. That mission is central to ensuring that HBO has the tools available to support our business through the ongoing technology-based disruption of media and to support new areas of growth. Like other leading Internet-based video service providers, we will design, build, and deploy scalable products with global reach.</p>
<p>Achieving these goals will require focus and a disciplined approach. Roles and responsibilities must be clear and well-defined to ensure efficient distribution of work and smooth collaboration between groups and people. In order to provide the organizational framework needed to achieve our goals, I am restructuring Digital Products around four functional groups (listed alphabetically):</p>
<p>1. Infrastructure Operations &#038; QA,<br />
2. Program Management,<br />
3. Software Engineering,<br />
4. User Experience &#038; Product Design. </p>
<p>Each of these groups will have responsibilities for both HBO GO and HBO.com as appropriate for the functional areas of each group. This will enable more efficient end-to-end integration and coordination of our design, platform architecture, and infrastructure development.</p>
<p>The attached &#8220;Digital Products Organizational Pillars&#8221; slide illustrates the roles and responsibilities of each of these four functional groups in greater detail. The leaders of these groups will report directly to me and will continue to do so after my transition to the CTO role.</p>
<p>Donna Stalworth will continue to head up the infrastructure operations and QA efforts in Digital Products. She will also add build and release management to her responsibilities.</p>
<p>Rebekah Calabrese will be stepping into the role of VP of Program Management for Digital Products. She and her team will be responsible for cross-group coordination, project management, budget management, technology vendor relationships, and overall status communication for Digital Products. Rebekah will also continue to provide contract support for Digital Products as well as the other technology groups. Her team will consist of the existing Digital Products program and project management staff and her current reports.</p>
<p>Drew Angeloff will lead all of Digital Products&#8217; software engineering activities in New York as well as in Seattle. Centralizing consumer software engineering in one group under one leader will maximize coordination and the flow of information, and will help ensure a consistent and robust software architecture. This is especially important given geographic distance between the New York and Seattle teams. The engineering staff working on device application development and the GO service currently on Rob Caruso’s team will now report to Drew.</p>
<p>Rob Caruso and the workflow team led by Jason Kui will transition to Diane Tryneski’s organization; Rob will report to Diane. Rob&#8217;s new charter is to build software engineering capabilities to optimize digital asset creation, management, and security, and to create technologies that unlock the full potential of software in the digital content area. Rob and his team will collaborate closely with Digital Products to ensure that our digital content technologies and our consumer-facing products inform each other to enable unique and innovative content-driven user experiences. This new role and group will be critical to achieving end-to-end software technology excellence.</p>
<p>Dina Juliano will lead the User Experience &#038; Product Design organization. Her team’s responsibilities will include HBO GO, HBO.com, and HBO On Demand. Dina&#8217;s team will conceive, design, and realize new digital experiences in partnership with key stakeholders across HBO. She and her team will incorporate consumer and market insights to create a coherent product vision and roadmap that engages our users. Dina&#8217;s team will consist of her existing team and the groups formerly in Hans Deutmeyer&#8217;s organization. </p>
<p>Hans has decided to leave HBO to pursue opportunities that better align with his future interests. Hans has been a part of the HBO GO story since its genesis and has played a key role in bringing it to the market successfully. Given the new organizational direction, he has decided that this is the right time for him to pursue other opportunities. I want to thank Hans for his contributions and wish him success in his new endeavors.</p>
<p>Please welcome Donna, Rebekah, Drew, Rob, and Dina in their new roles. The changes in their teams and roles are effective immediately.</p>

<p>The Los Angeles-based Rubicon Project has hired two execs to fill top spots at the digital advertising company, in what looks like preparations for an eventual public offering. </p>
<p>Greg Raifman, the founder, chairman and CEO of Dragon Media, will become president, reporting to Rubicon CEO and co-founder Frank Addante. And SocialVibe CEO Todd Tappin will take over in the role of COO/CFO, reporting to Raifman.</p>
<p>Founded in 2007 and armed with more than $50 million in funding, Rubicon is one of the larger real-time bidding platforms that allows automated buying and selling of global online ads. </p>
<p>&#8220;Greg and Todd are extremely intelligent and capable executives who have guided significant, publicly traded companies,&#8221; said Addante in a statement. &#8220;Both Greg and Todd have great relationships within our industry as well as on Wall Street. Their presence will enable me to focus on our overall vision and product strategy so we can take best advantage of the opportunities we see.&#8221;</p>
<p>Tappin is replacing Brian Barnum, who will leave the company, along with Chief Revenue Officer Nick Hulse. The pair only arrived less than two years ago, presumably to also help professionalize the organization.</p>
<p>In addition to the other exec moves, general counsel Victoria Von Szeliski will add the title of EVP of culture and business affairs and will also be adding 100 employees this year via organic growth and acquisition.</p>
<p>Rubicon said Raifman &#8212; who recently served as the executive chairman of video ad-serving company LiveRail, as well as being founding and running ad-serving pioneer Mediaplex &#8212; will &#8220;manage the day-to-day operations of the Rubicon Project as he ramps the company&#8217;s buy-side automation initiatives.&#8221; </p>
<p>Tappin will be in charge of Rubicon&#8217;s operating and financial plan and also lead mergers and acquisitions for the company. Before running SocialVibe, a video real-time buying startup, he was founding CFO of Overture and helped sell the search automation company to Yahoo many years ago.</p>
<p>The exec roundelay &#8212; a not entirely uncommon thing for Rubicon over the years &#8212; is apparently part of a larger bid to eventually IPO the company. Rubicon had also been in recent preliminary discussions with several larger companies &#8212; Yahoo and Adobe &#8212; about being acquired. The ad tech space has heated up of late, with a range of startups, such as AppNexus, Pubmatic, Turn and others, looking to gain ground, get funding or sell out.</p>
<p>But with a large price tag and some strong growth over the last year, along with becoming profitable, Rubicon appears to now be aiming to remain independent. Over the last few years, the company has grown its business significantly &#8212; according to comScore, Rubicon Project reached 214.2 million monthly unique users.</p>
<p>Whether that is enough to keep up with powerful rivals such as Google is, of course, the big question, especially as the way publishers and marketers interact with the online ad market is changing quickly.</p>

<p>Earlier today Yahoo <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130128/yahoo-beats-earnings-estimates-on-flattish-revenue/">reported fourth-quarter earnings</a> that beat analyst estimates, on still-flattish revenue.</p>
<p>Still, up is up, even if it is not really that much up, so Wall Steet bid up shares of the Silicon Valley Internet giant in after-hours trading.</p>
<p>Now it&#8217;s onto the conference call with investors for CEO Marissa Mayer:</p>
<p><strong>2:02 pm</strong>: Before the call, you can hear Mayer complaining about the goofy music played during the pre-conference call waiting time.</p>
<p>&#8220;We <em>have</em> to get better music,&#8221; she says to some minion. &#8220;This is <em>not</em> good music.&#8221;</p>
<p>Music to my ears! I say we get Beyoncé, lipsyncing or not.</p>
<p>The call starts quickly after that, with the ever-eager Mayer leaping right in with the fourth-quarter news, which is not all that bad. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s the first full year of growth in a while &#8212; though not the first quarter-to-quarter increase &#8212; even if it is only a very modest two percent increase. </p>
<p>That compares to industry-wide gains in revenue of many, many, many times that, but for Yahoo this is cause for a parade. A small parade, with good music, but a parade nonetheless.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to believe this is only my first full quarter here at Yahoo,&#8221; says Mayer in an upbeat tone.</p>
<p>She notes that her focus on product excellence and user experience was continuing, with some &#8220;early positive trends&#8221; in both products and people.</p>
<p>Mayer then list a series of moves, from the free food and better smartphones for employees to the addition of well-regarded entrepreneur Max Levchin to the board to the refreshes of Yahoo Mail and Flickr to the acquisition of some sassy new mobile startups.</p>
<p>Mayer also notes that the company under her purview had removed &#8220;385 of highest priority obstacles,&#8221; although she did not name any specifics. </p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/01/url4.jpeg"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/01/url4.jpeg" alt="url" width="261" height="193" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-289541" /></a></p>
<p>I imagine what No. 332 is: Switching out the iceberg lettuce at the URL cafeteria on Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif. HQ campus with some tasty organic mesclun as they have at Google, from whence Mayer came.</p>
<p>Better roughage means better returns!</p>
<p><strong>2:14 pm</strong>: Mayer turns the call over to CFO Ken Goldman, also a newbie. As usual, he runs through the numbers that are already in all the releases already. But I am enjoying his New England accent, hoping he will say the slight increase in revenue was &#8220;wicked&#8221; good.</p>
<p>Goldman, in fact, calls the revenue increase &#8220;modest,&#8221; which is true, although it sounds like &#8220;<em>mah-dist</em>.&#8221;</p>
<p>What&#8217;s not mah-dist is how much stock Yahoo has bought back, using its windfall from the recent sale of assets in China. It&#8217;s $1.45 billion, with more that that left to use for more share buybacks. That should keep Yahoo&#8217;s stock up nicely.</p>
<p>Goldman also talks about increases in the company&#8217;s search business, although notes that the Microsoft relationship is still not the most fantastic. </p>
<p>He speaks more effusively of Yahoo&#8217;s Asian partners, including Yahoo! Japan and China&#8217;s Alibaba Group. It&#8217;s deserved, since they have been the company&#8217;s treasure trove against its meh core performance in recent years.</p>
<p>Not so tasty is the problem Yahoo has with a big-money contract dispute in Mexico, which Goldman reiterates is &#8220;without merit.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>2:28 pm</strong>: Goldman moves onto Yahoo&#8217;s cash position, which is strong and which he says is going to be used to make the company better.</p>
<p>Mayer is back on board, talking about key focuses over multiple years. </p>
<p>She says Yahoo needs a &#8220;chain reaction of growth,&#8221; which needs to be fueled by a dozen new products that become a daily habits for consumers to increase usage and other metrics.</p>

<p>A nuclear bomb explosion is not exactly the best metaphor for a company&#8217;s turnaround, but in Yahoo&#8217;s case it is probably a pretty good one, given how stubborn its decline has been.</p>
<p>Mayer then switches the metaphor to one she recently used about &#8220;returning to the roots&#8221; of Yahoo. </p>
<p>Actually, mixing the metaphors, Yahoo has to blast some significant roots that have gotten in the way of its innovation over the years. </p>
<p>&#8220;The best is yet to come,&#8221; promises Mayer, in what she says will be a multi-year effort.</p>
<p>Now onto questions from the analysts!</p>
<p><strong>2:40 pm</strong>: The first question is about commercialization of its products. Mayer answers she is both pro-advertising and anti-ad &#8212; meaning they are good when they add to user experience and bad when they do not.</p>
<p>There will be slight margin declines due to this, which is the real point of the query, which Goldman says will not be too impacted.</p>
<p>The next question is on the weaker performance in display ads and whether mobile ads can ramp up quick enough or not.</p>
<p>Yahoo is not breaking out mobile revenue numbers as yet &#8212; it&#8217;s not impressive as yet, so that&#8217;s what&#8217;s going on there &#8212; although Mayer points to the number of mobile users increasing to 200 million now.</p>
<p>As to the declines in display, Mayer gives a non-answer, but it is likely due to big changes that new Yahoo COO Henrique De Castro has put into place in the way it sells ads and which <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> previously reported on. Mayer earlier in the call had confirmed those changes.</p>
<p>The fact of the matter &#8212; which is just what the analyst was asking about &#8212; is that Mayer simply <em>has</em> to improve display revenue, which is Yahoo&#8217;s core business.</p>
<p>Mayer then addresses the issue of not providing usage metrics anymore. Yahoo has withheld a lot of them since she has taken over, and she says it is because they are not indicative of metrics that, well, she thinks you need to know. </p>
<p>Instead, Mayer points to other metrics that she feels are better, such as number of ads sold and price per click on search.</p>

<p>Speaking of search, the next question is about that. What can Mayer say &#8212; and she does &#8212; but that Yahoo must also improve in that area. Indeed, it is lucrative low-hanging fruit for the company.</p>
<p>Here comes an interesting observation she makes based on a question of mobile versus desktop, which Mayer says should not be separated as two areas as consumers don&#8217;t think that way. </p>
<p>Yahoo is tuning up a dozen products, she says, having started with Yahoo Mail and its Flickr photo-sharing app.</p>
<p><strong>2:54 pm</strong>: Mayer is not saying which of this dirty dozen is next to get a makeover.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re investing in small, nimble, excellent teams,&#8221; says Mayer, who then tries to reference a famous Margaret Mead quote, but ends up mangling it a bit.</p>
<p>It is, for the record: &#8220;Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.&#8221;</p>
<p>This is true, which might make some Yahoo staffers nervous, since Mayer&#8217;s recent stack ranking of them means she can start on employee layoffs anytime she likes to separate the wheat from the chaff.</p>
<p><strong>3:01 pm</strong>: <em>Whoo-whee</em>, this is going long and I am getting weary. Mayer has to be some kind of digital Energizer Bunny &#8212; she just flew in from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and moved right into the prep for the Q4 earnings. </p>
<p>Tomorrow, she is presumably off to Las Vegas, where Yahoo&#8217;s global sales conference will start and she will doubtlessly be making an appearance.</p>
<p>I am exhausted simply by walking up and down the stairs at my house.</p>
<p>The next question is about third-party publishers and ad tech on mobile.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mobile monetization is new for everyone,&#8221; she says correctly, making the point that no one knows what is going to shake out.</p>
<p>She uses &#8212; as she has used &#8212; the example of when people thought search was not a moneymaker until Google proved otherwise.</p>
<p>The problem is, of course, that Google is Yahoo&#8217;s biggest rival in this new mobile ad arena, along with Facebook and many others. And Google, as its recent results showed, does know how to make money compared to Yahoo.</p>
<p>The next question is about mobile monetization eating into desktop revenue. </p>
<p>Mayer notes that Yahoo has hired 120 people with computer science degrees in the quarter to work on that area. </p>
<p>In other words, get ready for a symphony of geeks to return Yahoo to relevance. </p>
<p>Would they can pull it off, as that would be a tune worth listening to.</p>

<p>Sitting in front of a spectacular view of San Francisco at his home this afternoon, former Square COO Keith Rabois looks spent. </p>
<p>He is just recovering from a bout of pneumonia, which would be bad enough, but it&#8217;s clear from his tense and unusually &#8212; for him &#8212; disheveled appearance that the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130125/keith-rabois-long-statement-on-personal-relationship-with-square-employee-sexual-harassment-claims-that-feels-like-a-shakedown/">sexual harassment claim</a> made by a current male employee at the San Francisco payments startup has taken its toll on the typically hard-charging exec who is not known for suffering fools.</p>
<p>But, now, given a judgement he made to continue in a personal and physical relationship with that unnamed junior staffer after he was hired at Square, Rabois feels both foolish and also angry. </p>
<p>&#8220;At the end of the day, this is personally embarrassing to me, because when anyone&#8217;s life is exposed to a public forum, it creates quite a damaging situation,&#8221; said Rabois. &#8220;As we looked at it, it was going to become a distraction that was going to hurt the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>It appears as if he wanted to stay &#8212; he shrugs when directly asked about it, though he will not say so explicitly. But, Rabois finally agreed with Square&#8217;s top management, including CEO and founder Jack Dorsey, that is was better that he leave.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was very clear once this outrageous demand was made, instead of building great products, it would be all about that,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>That said, after an internal investigation, the company is backing him in the expected filing of a lawsuit from the employee, who has threatened a panoply of explosive allegations against him and the company that Rabois said again are a &#8220;fiction.&#8221;</p>
<p>He declined to show me any texts or emails between the two, but did recount the relationship in a blog post on Tumblr earlier today. </p>
<p>Richard Curiale, outside counsel for Square and also Rabois, said that the company had been approached about two weeks ago by New York lawyer Steven Berger, claiming the company knew of and did nothing to stop sexual harassment by Rabois and demanding a multi-million dollar settlement. </p>
<p>Curiale said he found no evidence in his investigation so far of anything except a &#8220;welcome&#8221; relationship that ended. He had even agreed to make Rabois available for a deposition with Berger, but the offer was refused. </p>
<p>I have an email into Berger for comment, which has thus far been unanswered. But Square has said it will fight any lawsuit filed and is currently supporting Rabois. </p>
<p>&#8220;I have not as yet found any conduct that is illegal and therefore there is no adverse relationship between Keith and Square,&#8221; said Curiale. &#8220;We don&#8217;t pay for claims that have no merit to them, because it amounts to extortion.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps so, but it also amounts to a very juicy story &#8212; the second such major blowup in Silicon Valley in a year. The other &#8212; now a lawsuit alleging gender discrimination and retaliation, and a countersuit &#8212; between the well-known venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins, and former partner Ellen Pao, is ongoing.</p>
<p>The particulars of the Rabois situation, per his side of the story, which he claims is supported by much evidence, is of a social and physical relationship with a man he met several years ago.</p>
<p>While he would not call their relationship dating, it was close and personal, including taking this man out with him to social events. </p>
<p>The problem came when he recommended this man for a job at Square and he was hired. The company was much smaller then, about 30 people, but as it grew Rabois insists he had no direct oversight of the employee and also did not treat him differently from others he managed at the company.</p>
<p>Rabois claims he gave him advice, as he did other employees, but neither helped or hindered the man in his efforts to advance. </p>
<p>The man and Rabois were still seeing each other socially until December, when the relationship cooled. </p>
<p>And then came the lawsuit threat two weeks ago, which Rabois said &#8220;stunned&#8221; him. </p>
<p>Square says that it was not aware of the personal relationship until the threat of the lawsuit; the employee has never made any complaints about Rabois to management. </p>
<p>Spokesman Ricardo Reyes said that &#8220;what we have here at most is bad judgement and we will defend ourselves.&#8221;</p>
<p>In this Rabois agrees, as he fields emails of support from his wide range of friends and colleagues in tech, where he is well known as an entrepreneur and angel investor. </p>
<p>&#8220;I have several good ideas of what I want to do next,&#8221; he said. </p>
