Plastic Logic, a start-up known for showing off (but not necessarily shipping) advanced e-book readers, said that it has finalized an investment deal to build a factory in Russia.

Apple Investing in Toshiba LCD Plant

Come 2011, Toshiba will begin construction of a new LCD panel factory in Ishikawa, one whose output is intended largely for the iPhone. Reportedly underwriting a portion of its $1.19 billion cost: Apple, which is evidently looking for a bit more control over its component sources as demand for LCD screens grows with the proliferation of touchscreen smartphones. Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Apple Ramps Up Holiday iPad Production

Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn is ramping up iPad production capacity to meet demand for the tablet over the holiday season. Taiwanese trade mag Digitimes claims Foxconn has begun using its newest factories in Chengdu, China, to manufacture an additional 10,000 iPads per day, or about 300,000 iPads per month.

Microsoft to Probe Conditions at China Supplier

Microsoft Corp. said it is investigating allegations of worker abuse at a factory in China that makes computer mice, cameras and other devices for the technology giant. The move was prompted by a report published this week by a Pittsburgh-based non-profit, the National Labor Committee, which alleges a factory in Dongguan, China, operated by KYE Systems Corp. overworks young employees and houses them in harsh conditions.

Dell Polishes Off Polish Ops

Dell is unloading another PC factory. The company is selling off its two-year-old computer manufacturing plant in Lodz, Poland, to Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, for an undisclosed sum.
