<p>Aghast at the U.S. International Trade Commission&#8217;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110325/itc-apple-did-not-infringe-nokia-patents/">ruling on its first complaint against Apple</a>, Nokia has filed a second, accusing Apple of infringing its patents &#8220;in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, tablets, and computers.&#8221;</p>
<p>At issue in the complaint are seven patents that Nokia argues &#8220;are now being used by Apple to create key features in its products in the areas of multi-tasking operating systems, data synchronization, positioning, call quality and the use of Bluetooth accessories.&#8221; Taken together with the IP cited in Nokia&#8217;s  previous ITC complaint and related cases in the U.S., U.K., Germany and The Netherlands, the company has nearly four dozen patents in play in its suit against Apple.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our latest ITC filing means we now have 46 Nokia patents in suit against Apple, many filed more than 10 years before Apple made its first iPhone,&#8221; Paul Melin, Nokia&#8217;s VP of intellectual property said in a statement. &#8220;Nokia is a leading innovator in technologies needed to build great mobile products and Apple must stop building its products using Nokia&#8217;s proprietary innovation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Almost sounds like Nokia&#8217;s saying it invented the iPhone, doesn&#8217;t it? Which is ironic, considering the company is on the record professing its fondness for Apple’s handset.</p>
<p>Asked once about the striking similarities between a touchscreen device it was designing and the iPhone, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s head of multimedia devices at the time, replied, “If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.”</p>

They run a vast variety of applications, from productivity programs to games, that mimic what laptops do. Their biggest limitations for serious work, gaming, Web surfing and multimedia are their small screens, cramped keyboards and tinny speakers.</p>

<p>So, what if you could use the brains and connectivity of such a hand-held computer to drive a laptop-size screen, keyboard and speakers, thus overcoming these limitations? Well, Motorola Mobility has devised a new phone and accessory that aim to do just that: to make the phone the only computer you need.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing this new phone, the Atrix 4G, an Android device that will cost $200 with a two-year contract and will run on AT&amp;T&#8217;s network. It&#8217;s slated to be available by March 6. I&#8217;ve also been testing its unusual and clever accessory called the laptop dock, which looks like a large netbook, with an 11.6-inch screen, full keyboard, touch pad, and stereo speakers. This dock, the price of which depends on when you buy it, has  no processor, no file storage and no connectivity of its own. It&#8217;s dormant until you plug the Atrix into a slot behind the screen.</p>
<p>When you dock the phone, the faux laptop comes alive. It duplicates the phone&#8217;s screen on its larger display and lets you use its connectivity and apps. It also contains a battery that charges the phone. The image of the phone&#8217;s screen, and any of its apps you run, can be actual size or blown up to use the dock&#8217;s larger screen.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Full-Screen Firefox</h5>
<p>Even more interestingly, the dock gives you access to a full, and full-screen, PC version of the Firefox Web browser. Firefox is tucked away inside the Atrix but is available only when the phone is plugged into the laptop dock or a second, smaller dock that&#8217;s meant to connect to a TV or desktop monitor. The smaller dock lacks a built-in keyboard, battery or screen.</p>
<p>The laptop dock costs $500, but AT&amp;T will knock the price down to $300, after rebates, if you buy it at the same time you buy the phone. That brings the combined price of both devices to $500—the same as the separate price for the dock. The smaller dock, called the multimedia dock, costs $190.</p>
<p>In my tests, the Atrix and the laptop dock performed mostly as advertised. The phone had no trouble driving the larger screen or the full Firefox browser. </p>
<p>I was even able to insert a flash drive into one of the dock&#8217;s two USB ports and copy songs, photos, videos and documents into the phone&#8217;s internal memory using the keyboard and touch pad. I edited and wrote text in an app called Quickoffice on the phone using the laptop dock&#8217;s keyboard, and ran various other apps, including the popular game Angry Birds, on the larger screen.</p>
<p>The Firefox browser worked as normal, using either the phone&#8217;s cellular or Wi-Fi connections to access the Internet. And both the phone itself and Firefox can run Flash videos, which mostly played fine.</p>
<p>But the combination of the phone and dock wasn&#8217;t as fast, smooth or versatile as having a real laptop, even though to use them you&#8217;re essentially carrying around a light laptop (the dock weighs 2.4 pounds). Many apps on the phone aren&#8217;t as polished or powerful as typical PC apps, and I found them clumsier to use with the keyboard and touch pad, as opposed to the touch screen for which they were designed. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Installation Issue</h5>
<p>Also, other than Firefox, you can&#8217;t install PC programs. You can use Web apps inside Firefox, such as Google Docs or the stripped-down Web versions of Microsoft&#8217;s Office apps. For email, you can either use the program based in the phone or any Web-based program via the Firefox browser, such as Gmail or Yahoo Mail. But you can&#8217;t, say, install iTunes, or PC-based games, or the full versions of Outlook or Microsoft Word. </p>
<p>And there is only a primitive file system, limited to the capacity of the phone, which is just 16 gigabytes, with an option to expand to 48 gigabytes.</p>
<p>The dock&#8217;s screen required a lot of scrolling when using Firefox, partly because the browser has a lot of menus and toolbars. To address this, Motorola lets you convert Web pages to versions with the Firefox controls stripped out, so you just see the content. </p>
<p>There&#8217;s another problem with the laptop dock. When you make or receive a voice call while the phone is docked, you must rely on the phone&#8217;s microphone and speakers, hidden behind the screen of the dock. As a result, calls sounded muffled on both ends, even though the phone automatically switches into speakerphone mode. Motorola says it is working on this issue.</p>
<p>Despite the drawbacks, some folks will surely be attracted to this innovative combination. </p>
<p>If you mostly do your computing tasks on a phone or a PC Web browser, storing files in the cloud and using phone or Web-based apps, Motorola has you covered. And the fact that the dock can charge the phone is a big plus.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">The Phone Side</h5>
<p>What about the phone itself? </p>
<p>Well, it&#8217;s one of the nicest smartphones I&#8217;ve tested. Its processor makes it fast, and it has a 4-inch, high-resolution screen—almost as high as the iPhone 4&#8242;s, though not quite as sharp to my eye. It runs an older version of Android, but Motorola is promising an upgrade.</p>
<p>The phone also has good battery life. It lasted a full day while I was testing it and Motorola claims up to nine hours of talk time. Photos and videos I took with the phone were sharp, and it has a front camera for video calls.</p>
<p>The Atrix also has two other notable features. First, it can take advantage of AT&amp;T&#8217;s souped-up 3G network, which the carrier calls 4G because it can supposedly achieve 4G data speeds. </p>
<p>In my tests, in the D.C. and New York areas, the speed wasn&#8217;t especially impressive, averaging just a bit better than 3G speeds on other AT&amp;T phones I&#8217;d tested.</p>
<p>There is also a fingerprint sensor built into the phone, which you can use instead of a pass code to secure the phone. It worked fine for me.</p>
<p>Overall, this is a very nice Android phone that can imitate a limited version of a laptop. That may be enough for some folks, but fall short for others.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For those <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110213/a-newbies-guide-to-mobile-world-congress-from-a-barcelona-newbie/">who have never been to Mobile World Congress</a>, it is hard to fully describe the scale of Barcelona&#8217;s giant cellphone convention.</p>
<p>While the Consumer Electronics Show and other big events feature acres of tiny booths crammed one against another, Mobile World Congress features a different kind of bigness. The show is spread out over eight big buildings in a historic area of town. Every couple of buildings are set several flights of stairs up from the last one, with the final two buildings just a stone&#8217;s throw from the grand National Palace.</p>
<p>Connecting the buildings and lining the promenade between them are various smaller trailers and bungalows.</p>
<p>Unlike the cramped booths at CES, the spread-out nature of Mobile World Congress allows even moderate-size companies a good amount of space to show their wares. Even those with bungalows outside a main hall stand a good chance of attracting visitors. Companies that went with that approach included Acer and INQ Mobile, which was <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110209/inq-mobile-friends-facebook-and-spotify-for-new-android-phone/">touting its new Android phone with quick access to Facebook and Spotify</a>.</p>
<p>That said, some folks&#8217; presence at Mobile World Congress is clearly bigger than others. </p>
<p>One booth that stands out is Google&#8217;s first-ever Android booth, tucked in the corner of Hall 8, just inside the entrance.<br />

The two-story pavilion features many of Google&#8217;s partners showing Android applications, as well as a place to create one&#8217;s own Android mini-me, plus a sushi-bar-style conveyor belt featuring the many phone and tablet designs based on the Google operating system. Among the designs that scrolled by while I was standing there were well-known names such as Samsung and HTC, as well as less-familiar brands such as China&#8217;s ZTE and Alcatel, which is new to Android.</p>
<p>Perhaps the pi&egrave;ce de r&eacute;sistance of the booth is a slide that allows children of all chronological ages to relive their youth and glide down from the top floor back to the bottom. The most popular thing, though, was a series of collectible pins being passed out throughout Mobile World Congress by various Android partners. They were a hot commodity, and by Tuesday afternoon most booths were completely out of their supply of pins, placing green candy inside the dishes instead.</p>
<p>While impressive, the Android booth was not the largest by any stretch. One of the more massive setups I saw was the Ericsson booth, which occupied nearly all of Hall 6. A small <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110216/sony-ericsson-aims-to-play-its-way-back-into-android-smartphone-lead/">Sony Ericsson</a> booth was open to the public. Behind a security gate, though, was a massive spread for the many partners of both Ericsson and Sony Ericsson. It featured two bars and two kiosks serving various tapas.</p>
<p>There were meeting rooms and patio tables for more-casual interactions. On display were all kinds of Ericsson technologies ranging from its core infrastructure gear to all kinds of other products and research projects.</p>
<p>A few caught my eye, including a mobile payment section that featured a &#8220;Museum of Money&#8221; talking about days gone by when people used paper currency with all its flaws. Under glass were such relics as money, piggy banks and counterfeit-detection pens, while Ericsson showed off its many payment technologies.</p>
<p>In another corner, Ericsson was showing off a vending machine that is paid, not with cash or credit card, but via SMS message. Ericsson has a unit that serves as an intermediary between the vendor and the carrier to manage the transaction.</p>

The phones may not be the exact <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110215/live-htc-shows-off-first-tablet-android-phone-with-facebook-button-and-more/">Cha Cha and Salsa models that were unveiled at HTC&#8217;s press conference</a>, but the devices will have similar abilities, including a context-aware Facebook button that allows photos and links to automatically be shared and lights up when such an option is available.</p>
<p>&#8220;In the U.S., AT&#038;T and HTC are exclusively bringing this unique user experience to the market later this year,&#8221; an AT&#038;T representative told Mobilized. However, the carrier said that full device plans have not been finalized.</p>
<p>AT&#038;T has said it plans to offer at least a dozen Android devices this year as part of a <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110207/atts-chief-marketing-officer-on-how-the-company-has-found-android-religion/">major push to feature devices with Google&#8217;s operating system</a>. Products announced so far include phones from Samsung and HTC, Motorola&#8217;s <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/tablets-flying-fast-and-furious-at-ces/">Xoom tablet</a> and its Atrix smartphone, which can act as a laptop when plugged into a custom dock.</p>
<p>&#8220;It goes without saying this is part of our commitment to have the industry’s best Android portfolio this year,&#8221; the AT&#038;T spokesman said.</p>
<p>HTC and AT&#038;T aren&#8217;t the only ones at Mobile World Congress looking to harness the power of Facebook. INQ Mobile is <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110209/inq-mobile-friends-facebook-and-spotify-for-new-android-phone/">showing off its cloud line of Android phones</a>, which feature heavy Facebook integration, while Gemalto has a SIM card that features built-in Facebook support.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/IMG_3828-380x285.jpg" alt="" title="IMG_3828" width="380" height="285" class="alignright size-Medium380 wp-image-4150" />HTC on Tuesday became the latest cellphone maker to &#8220;friend&#8221; Facebook in an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the social network.</p>
<p>At a press conference due to start any minute, the Taiwanese cellphone maker is set to show off a pair of Android phones&#8211;the Cha Cha and the Salsa&#8211;as well as its first tablet and several other Android devices.</p>
<p>HTC&#8217;s move follows that of INQ Mobile, which last week <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110209/inq-mobile-friends-facebook-and-spotify-for-new-android-phone/">announced two Android models that feature heavy Facebook integration</a>. Gemalto also announced Monday it plans to integrate Facebook into SIM cards, allowing users of low-end phones better access to the social network.</p>
<p>Like many others&#8217; news here at the show, most of HTC&#8217;s had leaked out well ahead of the event.</p>
<p>One particularly nice touch&#8211;HTC planned ahead and ran Ethernet cables to each seat in the theater. (Unfortunately, Mobilized left the MacBook Air Ethernet adapter back in the apartment.)</p>

<p><strong>9:58 am</strong>: Still waiting for the press conference&#8211;which was due to start a half hour ago&#8211;to get under way. We do have comfy seats and soothing music, but would have prefereed an extra half hour of sleep.</p>
<p><strong>9:59 am</strong>: Apparently all I had to do was complain. Now it&#8217;s getting started with CEO Peter Chou taking the stage.</p>
<p>&#8220;2011 is going to be an amazing year,&#8221; Chou promises.</p>
<p>Some analysts predict smartphones will outsell feature phones, Chou says.</p>
<p>&#8220;Features that were once fancy, extra, are now becoming standard,&#8221; he says. &#8220;&#8216;Nice to have&#8217; is turning into &#8216;must have.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Hardware is important, but so are software and services like Sense and HTCSense.com. Company plans new versions of HTC Sense for phones with keyboards, larger screens, etc.</p>
<p><strong>10:04 am</strong>: Some stats from Chou:</p>
<p>25 million smartphones sold last year, more than double the prior year, with revenue up 93 percent.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s global brand awareness reached 50 percent, up from 13 percent a year and a half ago. (Of course, that means half of consumers still don&#8217;t know HTC, but a big improvement nonetheless.)</p>
<p><strong>10:05 am</strong>: On to 2011: 4G networks will change everything again. HTC Thunderbolt, its first LTE smartphone, shipping this week with Verizon.</p>
<p><strong>10:07 am</strong>: Company is announcing five phones today, the most it has ever announced at one time. Chou says.</p>
<p>&#8220;I hope you agree it has been worth the wait,&#8221; Chou says, bringing out John Wang, HTC&#8217;s chief marketing officer.</p>
<p><strong>10:07 am</strong>: Talking about HTC Sense. Location-data for 83 countries. HTC spent a year and a half building the maps product. You can preload, so travel won&#8217;t cost a fortune in roaming charges.</p>
<p>Weather is another good example, Wang says, where the company aimed not just to provide information, but also offer an emotional experience.</p>
<p>&#8220;When it is sunny you almost feel the warmth on your body. When it rains, you almost want to wipe your phone dry.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am</strong>: First demo fails as video he wants to show won&#8217;t play.</p>
<p>&#8220;Well, maybe later on,&#8221; Wang says, moving on to the new phones.</p>
<p>And another fails as whatever was supposed to happen isn&#8217;t happening.</p>
<p>Okay, here we go. HTC Desire S. And, we&#8217;ve got some more demo fail going on.</p>
<p><strong>10:12 am</strong>: &#8220;We apologize for this,&#8221; Wang says, annoucing a few-minutes pause.</p>
<p><strong>10:15 am</strong>: And we are back, with HTC Desire S, Incredible S and Wildfire S.</p>
<p>Desire S doesn&#8217;t have front and back. Machined out of a single block of aluminum. &#8220;It feels solid in your hand,&#8221; Wang says. Also has full HD video recording.</p>
<p>Wildfire S, smaller and in three colors. &#8220;It can almost disappear into your pocket. (Mobilized hates it when that happens. We&#8217;ve put two iPod Nanos through the wash.</p>
<p><strong>10:20 am</strong>: HTC Incredible S. As you rotate the large Android phone, the icons on the buttons also rotate. 8-megapixel camera, integrated video chat with front-facing camera. &#8220;Incredible S combines premium design with premium experience,&#8221; Wang says.</p>
<p>So, essentially these are updates to the existing product line.</p>
<p>Next up, the Facebook phones.</p>
<p><strong>10:22 am</strong>: There are 500 million Facebook users worldwide, but 200 million check it on their phones. Those users are twice as engaged. Many young people check Facebook right when they wake up with a significant number doing so from their phones before they even wake up, Wang says.</p>
<p>Now showing a video of HTC&#8217;s work with Facebook to build the new phones.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am</strong>: Video of Facebook CEO Marc Zuckerberg touting the device.</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot has been made about a Facebook phone,&#8221; Zuckerberg says, but adds that there will be more than a dozen phones this year with deep social integration. &#8220;HTC is doing that here.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mobilized is apologizing in advance, but I may not make it through the whole press conference.</p>
<p><strong>10:26 am</strong>: The new phones&#8211;the Cha Cha (with keyboard) and Salsa (touch-only) both have a dedicated blue Facebook button at the bottom.</p>
<p><strong>10:27 am</strong>: Can use button to post updates, but also if taking a picture can use that button to share social network. &#8220;When you press this button, the photo is instantly uploaded to Facebook,&#8221; Wang says. Button blinks also when reading an article on the Web. Press the Facebook button and it will share that on Facebook. Similar, when you are listening to a song, pressing the button will share that information.</p>
<p>If you hold button down, you check in on Facebook Places.</p>
<p>Both phones also support Facebook messaging and chat.</p>
<p>&#8220;We did not just add social networking to the phone,&#8221; Wang says.</p>
<p><strong>10:30 am</strong>: Bringing up Facebook VP Chamath Palihapitiya to talk about the partnership.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m just frankly very thrilled we are taking this very important step, which I think will be the first of many,&#8221; he says, saying he expects Facebook and HTC to do more things together.</p>
<p><strong>10:32 am</strong>: Chou back up, saying he could just stop with five great phones and ensure another great year. But he&#8217;s not. There&#8217;s a tablet coming.</p>
<p><strong>10:34 am</strong>: Chou says the company could have rushed out another &#8220;me too&#8221; experience, but says that wasn&#8217;t what the company wanted to do.</p>

<p><strong>10:37 am</strong>: Chou holds up the Flyer, then hands things back to Wang. Flyer also has unibody design, which he says makes the tablet feel solid but keeps it lightweight. </p>
<p>HTC wanted it to be comfortable to hold in hand. At 415 grams it is about the same weight as a paperback book.</p>
<p>Here are a few features: 1.5GHz chip, 6-hour battery life, dual cameras, Flash 10 and HTML 5 support, along with new 3-D-based HTC Sense experience.</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: Also has a stylus&#8211;unique among Android tablets&#8211;HTC Scribe technology.</p>
<p>Allows you to share things more easily, Wang says. Just scribble &#8220;let&#8217;s go&#8221; on a restaurant Web page and press a button and it is sent.</p>
<p>You can also use it to do audio note taking&#8211;a la Livescribe, where notes are synchronized to the audio.</p>
<p>Mobilized has to jam to our next meeting, but I think we have hit the high points.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Microsoft announced on Monday plans to fill in some of the key gaps from the initial Windows Phone 7 release with two updates due out this year.</p>
<p>The more interesting of the updates is the second one&#8211;a major release&#8211;due later this year. In a Mobile World Congress keynote, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer plans to demo only a couple of features of the release, including improved multitasking, simultaneous game play with an Xbox as well as the addition of the company&#8217;s Internet Explorer 9 browser.</p>

<p>An earlier update, now due out by March, <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101201/windows-phone-7-update-is-no-iphone-killer/">brings the long-awaited copy-and-paste features to the operating system</a> as well as some performance tweaks and support for CDMA networks.</p>
<p>Windows Phone unit President Andy Lees told Mobilized that the new release later this year should answer critics who worried that Microsoft wouldn&#8217;t be able to innovate fast enough to catch up or leapfrog over features available on rivals such as iPhone and Android.</p>

<p>&#8220;Part of what we are doing is sharing technology across the company,&#8221; Lees said in an interview. In other examples, Microsoft is showing a demo of how a user on the phone might play a game throwing balls at someone playing with an Xbox or Kinect. Microsoft also plans to allow sharing of Office documents directly between phones, Windows PCs and the cloud-based Windows Live service.</p>
<p>Moving the full IE9 browser over to the phone will allow for hardware acceleration and other features that had not been possible on phones in the past, Lees said. For battery and other reasons, Lees said that the new release won&#8217;t support Adobe&#8217;s Flash, but Lees said it is not a religious issue for him, and that the company may add such support down the road.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not allergic to Flash,&#8221; Lees said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not in this update, but we&#8217;re not making some particular statement that it will never be there.&#8221;</p>
<p>Microsoft also plans to announce that it will integrate Twitter into the People hub in much the same way that the initial release brings in Facebook updates.</p>
<p>The update later this year will be the one adopted by Nokia in its first Windows Phone, Lees said. Nokia announced last week, of course, that it <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110210/nokia-microsoft-ballmer-and-elops-letter-announcing-the-deal/">plans to make Windows Phone its primary smartphone operating system</a> going forward.</p>
<p>As for early reaction to the Nokia move, Lees said the response has been positive, both from mobile operators as well as from phone makers, even those that now find themselves with a new competitor.</p>
<p>Lees said that basically all of the companies that make Windows Phone devices also make phones for Android and have plenty of competition there as well. Lees said that, if anything, Nokia&#8217;s move could spur some device makers that were on the fence about supporting Windows Phone 7.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have had other [phone makers] approach us who were talking to us and have now increased their, should I say, level of focus,&#8221; Lees said.</p>
<p>As for Nokia CEO Stephen Elop&#8217;s comments that the amount of money flowing to Nokia from Microsoft is <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20110213/nokia-says-it-will-get-billions-from-microsoft/">measured in billions rather than in millions</a>, Lees said that one must consider that the deal includes partnerships around search and services as well as the amount of marketing and other support being directly provided by Microsoft.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not talking about specifics,&#8221; Lees said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s a sizeable opportunity.&#8221;</p>

Windows Phone is easier and simpler, he said. &#8220;With Windows Phone it&#8217;s easier to see information at a glance,&#8221; Ballmer said.</p>
<p><strong>4:12 pm</strong>: On to new stuff, in the &#8220;near future in 2011, we will bring multitasking to Windows Phones&#8221; Ballmer said. </p>
<p>Ballmer is talking IE9. &#8220;We need to give people the full Web on their phone, like we do on the PC,&#8221; Ballmer said. (Wouldn&#8217;t that also include Flash, Mobilized wonders?)</p>
<p><strong>4:15 pm</strong>: Apps are great, Ballmer said, but not enough. &#8220;It&#8217;s often too hard to find what you want when you want it,&#8221; he said. That, he said, is why Windows Phone also has task-specific hubs like People, Pictures, Office, Music and Video.</p>
<p><strong>4:16 pm</strong>: Interesting note, Ballmer has again touted 93 percent customer satisfaction number, but no new sales figure.</p>

<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/iPhone_stream_view.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3549" title="iPhone_stream_view" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/iPhone_stream_view-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a>The company has a not-too-shabby 35 million downloads to date of its <a href="http://www.cooliris.com/desktop/how-to-launch-and-use/">Wall product</a>, and is the default media gallery for Google&#8217;s Android. But now it&#8217;s venturing out into the oh-so-hot mobile media-sharing space (see: Instagram, Path, Picplz) with a photo app called <a href="http://www.liveshare.com/">LiveShare</a>&#8211;for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7 and the Web&#8211;that&#8217;s focused on groups.</p>
<p>Cooliris is also announcing today that it&#8217;s raised $9.6 million in Series C funding from investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers (which also <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110201/path-raises-8-65m-from-kleiner-index/">recently backed</a> Path), Deutsche Telekom’s T-Venture, DAG Ventures and the Westly Group. The five-year-old Palo Alto-based company has now raised a total of $28.6 million and employs 45 people.</p>
<p>Cooliris&#8217;s new LiveShare app helps users create photo streams for a particular event or group of people. Everyone who is invited to a stream can share photos, taken on a phone or elsewhere. Cooliris CEO Soujanya Bhumkar said that he thinks this &#8220;hyperpersonalized&#8221; approach fits with how people think about sharing: With respect to the four aspects of space, time, interests and relationships.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Android_Create_Stream.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3550" title="Android_Create_Stream" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Android_Create_Stream-168x300.jpg" alt="" width="168" height="300" /></a>What does that actually mean? While Path pushes users to identify their closest 50 friends for <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101114/path-the-social-app-thats-not-viral-by-design/">intimate sharing of personal photos and videos</a>, LiveShare gives users the option of sharing with whoever is appropriate for any context.</p>
<p>There are many alternatives to LiveShare, especially for Apple&#8217;s iOS platform. Will users want to install yet another app because of its particular set of nifty features and the flexibility of its sharing options? Perhaps not, but people seem to increasingly <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110101/the-social-webs-big-new-theme-for-2011-multiple-identities-for-everyone/">utilize tools to segment their online identities</a>, so LiveShare could become part of that trend.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also competition from the social Web giant Facebook, which provides a similar way to filter its Web site based on designated friend groups (though it has not disclosed how popular the product is with users). LiveShare, like many social apps, gets its friend network information from users plugging into Facebook.</p>
<p>But Cooliris isn&#8217;t starting from scratch with this product. For instance, the company is making use of its existing relationship with Google, so LiveShare will be incorporated into Android&#8217;s Gallery. But with nearly $30 million raised, expectations for LiveShare will be very, very high.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While Nvidia scored a lot of tablet and smartphone design wins at January&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show, Qualcomm is hoping to get back into the act, announcing a new series of single-core and dual-core processors with plans to move to a quad-core chip by next year.</p>

<p>The new Snapdragon processors feature the company&#8217;s Krait chip design aimed specifically at mobile phones and tablets. The company said that the new chips offer up to 12 times as much performance as the original Snapdragon processors and, because they use a new, thinner generation of wiring, can use as little as a quarter as much power as the originals.</p>
<p>&#8220;We’ve really taken performance to the next level,” Qualcomm Vice President Raj Talluri said in an interview at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where the chipmaker is announcing the new processors. Talluri said the chips will be particularly useful in gaming and <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101231/qualcomm-shows-why-augmented-reality-on-the-phone-is-really-nifty-video/">augmented-reality applications</a> and also support things such as recording 3-D video and playing back 3-D videos, without the need for glasses.</p>
<p>Talluri acknowledged that Qualcomm lost some ground in being later than Nvidia to move to dual-core chips, but said that the company expects 10 tablets using its processors to hit the market this year. HP plans to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110209/what-to-expect-at-todays-hp-webos-event/">use a dual-core Qualcomm processor in its new webOS tablet</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;They got a couple,&#8221; Talluri said. &#8220;You’ll see a lot more from us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Qualcomm also benefits from two other industry moves&#8211;Nokia&#8217;s move to adopt Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft&#8217;s <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101221/microsoft-plans-to-talk-windows-on-arm-at-ces-but-products-a-ways-off/">decision to enable full-blown Windows to run on ARM-based processors</a> such as Snapdragon.</p>
<p>The Nokia move is noteworthy because Qualcomm has been at the heart of nearly all of the Windows Phone 7 designs thus far, giving it a huge opening to land Nokia&#8211;a company that thus far has not used much in the way of chips from Qualcomm.</p>
<p>&#8220;This one really provides a great opportunity for us,&#8221; Talluri said. &#8220;We can provide them a really quick time to market.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for the <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/windows-on-arm-been-in-works-since-before-windows-7s-release/">move to bring Windows to ARM-based chips</a>, Talluri said that opens the door for Qualcomm to power whole new types of devices beyond phones and tablets.</p>
<p>&#8220;It extends our reach higher than phones,&#8221; he said. But, as with phones, Qualcomm will find plenty of competition as Nvidia and TI are also eager to give Intel a run for its money in the PC market.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Motorola Mobility plans to announce later on Monday the acquisition of <a href="http://www.3lm.com/">3LM</a>, a tiny 10-person Mountain View start-up with the little goal of making Android a secure platform for the enterprise.</p>
<p>The company, which is also just on the verge of launching its product, was started by two former Google employees from the Android team. CEO Tom Moss said he and Gaurav Mathur saw a huge opportunity to offer companies the flexibility of Android with the kind of security features companies get with BlackBerry and Windows Mobile 6.5.<br />

&#8220;This trend of consumerization of IT is really shortsighted,&#8221; Moss told Mobilized in an interview on Monday morning. Businesses still want the same things they always have, including high levels of manageability and security. However, the rise of the iPhone and Android with their powerful capabilities have left IT in reactionary mode. &#8220;We&#8217;re kind of going against the trend but we think it&#8217;s the right bet.&#8221;</p>
<p>As part of the deal, 3LM will be a wholly owned subsidiary and continue to work with multiple device makers, Moss said. Financial terms were not disclosed. Motorola was one of the companies that 3LM had been working with. </p>
<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t pursue anybody,&#8221; he said, noting there were multiple interested parties. &#8220;They are the only OEM that is just doing Android, which kind of matches our mojo and our DNA. We really think it is the best platform for enterprise IT.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for the acquisition, Moss said he had built a small team that did a lot of product development in a short period of time, but needed to start building up capabilities for sales and support, all of the kinds of things that would have required some sort of financing. &#8220;We don&#8217;t have to worry abut funding.&#8221;</p>
<p>The deal will also help the company get an in with the kind of customers and partners it needs. &#8220;It&#8217;s hard as a 10-person start-up to be taken seriously, where as if you are Motorola people will at least talk to you.&#8221;</p>
<p>Moss said there is a narrow window to shift the trend away from enterprises just &#8220;giving up&#8221; and allowing all manner of devices onto their network as long as they have secure email. Although that is where things are headed, Moss noted that a lot of businesses still use BlackBerry and even Windows Mobile devices because of their higher security, though clearly that trend is shifting.</p>
<p>&#8220;We really want to get that out there before people just give up on security,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a question of urgency. We wanted to get out there really quick.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company, which started last year, has about $1.5 million in seed investment from angel investors and VC firm Accel Partners.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s not <em>the</em> Facebook phone, but it is a phone with a whole lot of Facebook.<br />

INQ Mobile on Wednesday is announcing its new Cloud line&#8211;Android phones that have Facebook features deeply integrated into their core as well as a dedicated music service from Spotify. The Cloud&#8217;s home screens feature a trove of Facebook options ranging from a visual news feed with images and video to one-button access to features like Facebook Chat and location-based check-ins.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to do for the Facebook generation what BlackBerry did for the enterprise market,&#8221; INQ Mobile CEO Frank Meehan said in an interview in San Francisco last week. &#8220;For someone under 30 this is the stuff you want to see all the time.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Cloud line comes in two models&#8211;one with a keyboard and the other with a pure touchscreen. The bad news for you Americans (Mobilized is feeling very British here in London) is that the phone is coming to the U.K. in April, with no firm plans yet for when it might arrive stateside. INQ Mobile currently sells phones with Telus in Canada, but its devices are not yet sold in the U.S.</p>
<p>INQ Mobile made their announcement just ahead of Mobile World Congress, the cell phone industry&#8217;s big trade show which gets under way on Sunday in Barcelona.</p>
<p>There have been <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100923/report-non-existent-facebook-phone-to-be-manufactured-by-inq-mobile/">rumors of an INQ-built Facebook phone for some time</a>&#8211;rumors that have been conflated with an official Facebook entry into the mobile market. HTC is also <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110126/facebook-phone-rumors-make-the-news-feed-again/">expected to debut a Facebook-heavy phone</a>, though it has yet to announce its plans.</p>
<p>For its part, Facebook praised the INQ device.</p>
<p>Facebook mobile head Henri Moissinac said in a statement that the Cloud phones &#8220;bring Facebook to people with a single touch while they are mobile and demonstrate the power of socially aware devices.&#8221;</p>
<p>Although the selling point of the INQ Mobile phones are the connections to Facebook and Spotify, the Cloud line is pure Android. The Facebook features themselves are just elaborate home screen widgets tied to the social network, while Spotify replaces the default music player.</p>
<p>In doing so, INQ is looking to strike a balance between offering something unique while maintaining compatibility with Android.</p>
<p>&#8220;People haven&#8217;t had an emotional attachment to Android,&#8221; Meehan said, noting that users have such an affinity for the iPhone, and to some extent even the BlackBerry, or at least its messenger program.</p>
<p>The Cloud phones use a modest 600MHz processor from Qualcomm and feature version 2.2 of Android (a.k.a. Froyo), though the devices are designed to be upgradeable to the Gingerbread version. Meehan said that INQ is deliberately keeping the devices low-cost so they can sell for just a fraction of the iPhone&#8217;s price tag, making them attractive to a different segment of the market.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve taken very much a mass market approach,&#8221; Meehan said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going after the LGs, the Samsungs. We&#8217;re not going after people who are going for an iPhone.&#8221;</p>
<p>He also sees an opportunity to nab some BlackBerry Curve users.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Curve market is ripe,&#8221; Meehan said. &#8220;They have been sitting there with a terrible browser.&#8221;</p>
<p>There are also some family ties involved in the phone&#8217;s direction. INQ Mobile is owned by Li Ka-shing&#8217;s Hutchison Whampoa, which, through a subsidiary, is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071130/facebook-nabs-60-million-investment-from-li-ka-shing/">also an investor in both Facebook</a> and Spotify. INQ Mobile started in 2008 and has grown to more than 200 employees, said Meehan, who also is a member of Spotify&#8217;s board of directors.</p>
<p>As for when the company might bring the Cloud line (or any phones for that matter) to the U.S., Meehan said it could be as early as the second half of this year.</p>
<p>&#8220;Let’s see how it goes,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I’m not rushing into it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, it might also help if Spotify launched in the U.S., something that always appears to be on the verge of happening <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110208/spotify-clears-its-throat-for-a-u-s-launch-in-coming-months/">&#8220;in the coming months.&#8221;</a></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Srivastava_web-214x300.jpg" alt="" title="Srivastava_web" width="214" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2990" />The ripple effects at Microsoft in the wake of the <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110110/head-of-microsofts-servers-and-business-unit-leaving-this-summer/">pending departure </a>of Microsoft Server and Tools head Bob Muglia continued today. First Satya Nadella, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110209/bing-overlord-satya-nadella-promoted-to-president-of-server-and-tools-at-microsoft/">as reported by BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher</a>, was promoted from head of the Bing search effort to the helm of STB.</p>
<p>Second, Amitabh Srivastava, head of Microsoft&#8217;s Azure cloud platform business, announced that he&#8217;s leaving the company. Srivastava, who joined Microsoft in 1997, was widely considered to be a possible successor to Muglia, but lost out to Nadella.</p>
<p>One of the few ever to be named a Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft&#8211;an honor now known as Technical Fellow&#8211;he was tapped, along with Brian Valentine, by then Windows chief Jim Allchin to take over the Windows engineering efforts in 2003 at a time when the operating system was being widely derided as plagued with security and other problems. Srivastava had his team draw up a map depicting how all the various pieces of the Windows source fit together. It was eight feet tall, 11 feet wide, and was described in a 2005 <a href="http://users1.wsj.com/lmda/do/checkLogin?mg=wsj-users1&#038;url=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB112743680328349448.html">Wall Street Journal story </a>as looking like a &#8220;haphazard train map with hundreds of tracks crisscrossing each other.&#8221;</p>
<p>Srivastava and Valentine are credited with the 2004 proposal to streamline how all those pieces functioned, a plan that would allow various features to be added or removed without disrupting the whole operating system. The idea was a partial response to the looming threat from Google, which that year had launched Gmail. The problem was their plan required throwing out a lot of legacy source code that had been in Windows for years, and starting fresh.</p>
<p>Srivastava&#8217;s changes included automating testing on features that had for years been done by hand. Code with too many bugs were sent to &#8220;code jail.&#8221; Over time, code flowing into what was to become Windows Vista improved.</p>
<p>We all know what happened with Vista&#8211;it too was widely panned. But the engineering processes put in place had a lot to do with the many improvements that appeared in Windows 7.</p>
<p>Srivastava then moved on to a new Microsoft project in 2006, code named Red Dog, now known as Azure, which launched in 2008. From this he pivoted to running the server and cloud division, overseeing Microsoft&#8217;s relationships with enterprise and data center customers.</p>
<p>People I&#8217;ve been talking to who tend to know a lot about the internal politics at Microsoft say this isn&#8217;t the last of the changes. Now that Muglia&#8217;s replacement has been announced, Nadella is going to want to name key members for his team, which means that those not tapped will probably choose to leave as well. The management shake-up at Microsoft is not over yet.</p>
<p>Srivastava has a Ph.D. in computer science from Penn State, and was invited to deliver the commencement address at the school&#8217;s College of Engineering in 2008, which is in the video below. Key quote: &#8220;In the end, it&#8217;s all about execution.&#8221;</p>

<p>This week, I tested Tello (Tello.com), a new customer-service website and mobile app that encourages users to chime in on their customer-service experiences, good or bad. Businesses, or specific employees at those businesses, can be rated with a thumbs up or thumbs down and a detailed comment. </p>
<p>Tello was released in the Apple App Store this week, but I got special permission to test it early. It&#8217;s currently available for use at Tello.com, on other devices via mobile browsers at m.tello.com or as a native app on Apple&#8217;s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Tello&#8217;s founder and CEO, Joe Beninato, said an Android app is due out this spring.</p>
<p>At first glance, Tello seems to be another location-based service like Foursquare or Gowalla, which encourage people to &#8220;check in&#8221; while they&#8217;re at a specific place to find friends who are checked in there, or to earn badges and titles for checking in there more than anyone else. Broader review sites like Yelp let people comment on various aspects of a place or experience. But people using these services aren&#8217;t rating customer service specifically.</p>
<p>On the upside, Tello&#8217;s narrow scope means people know they&#8217;re reading solely about customer service, without hearing numerous details about other aspects of a business. </p>

<p>The downside to Tello is that it can be hard to sum up an entire experience without considering other factors involved. If someone visits the new Italian restaurant down the street and its ambiance and food are outstanding, yet the wait staff is deplorable, a thumbs up or thumbs down doesn&#8217;t tell the whole story. For expert complainers, or people who like more space for expressing their opinions, Tello may seem too succinct. Its app and home page display portions of comments along with user ratings, so if you waxed on for a thousand words about a hotel&#8217;s poor Wi-Fi, bad lighting and slow room service, most people wouldn&#8217;t see those remarks at a glance. </p>
<p>Part of Tello&#8217;s appeal is that it offers a peek in on customer-service experiences around the country, so before I flew to California this week I took a look at Tello to see what businesses are getting good ratings out there. Only a relatively small group of beta testers were using Tello when I was testing it, limiting the number of rated businesses. But this will improve as more people use the service.</p>
<p>The Tello app uses GPS to recognize a user&#8217;s location and then displays a list of nearby businesses; nearby, in this case, is defined as within two-tenths of a mile. If people type in the name of a business and search, this broadens the location range search to within five miles. </p>
<p>On a few occasions, including a trip to my Washington, D.C., neighborhood&#8217;s independent coffee shop, a Greek restaurant and a Potbelly Sandwich Shop, I came up empty handed when I looked for reviews of these places. Mr. Beninato explained this was because some aspects of the search engine weren&#8217;t finalized at the time I was testing, and in one case, I was too far away from the business. Sure enough, after a final update, I had better luck finding businesses. A business can be manually added to Tello by selecting a plus icon and typing in details including the business&#8217;s name and address. </p>

<p>As for rating individual employees, on most occasions, I didn&#8217;t think to ask the name of the person who helped me at the business so I could comment on their service. I did catch the name of a terrific waitress at the Greek restaurant because she signed the bill with a smiley face. In that case, I was able to make a specific comment about an employee, rather than a general comment about the restaurant. I gave Mara a thumbs up and commented she took time to make useful wine suggestions in the midst of a bustling evening with every table filled. The more I used Tello, the more I started to notice employees&#8217; names.</p>
<p>After using Tello over a period of time, each user builds up a personalized page of ratings, which is helpful for remembering which places are worth a return visit and which ones to avoid. Any Tello rating is, by default, instantly shared on the Tello.com site as well as to users of the app; it can be posted out to Facebook and Twitter in the same step.</p>
<p>Tello aspires to be more than the destination where happy customers go to cheer or wronged customers go to whine. An option on the screen where ratings comments are entered lets users request a reply from a business if they had a bad experience. When someone selects this option, Tello contacts the user via email and asks how he or she wants to be contacted by the business—email or phone—so the business has a chance to fix things. </p>
<p>Starting this spring, Tello plans to roll out new features aimed at businesses that will allow them to claim their business on Tello by going through a verification process. They will then be automatically notified of bad experiences so they can decide how to handle a customer&#8217;s problems. And in the future, customers who rate businesses might be able to receive coupons. </p>
<p>Another new feature due out this spring will let businesses add lists of employees for Tello users to see, which may help them remember who served them or how to spell an employee&#8217;s name. Employees who receive good ratings could be acknowledged and rewarded by their employers, motivating them to work harder.</p>
<p>Though Tello is just getting started, it could be an incredibly helpful service through which satisfied customers get to tell friends about their experiences—or disappointed customers get to complain with a chance of actually being heard. Just know that Tello&#8217;s thumbs up or thumbs down ratings don&#8217;t allow for much ambiguity. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Although AT&#038;T has dabbled with Android in the past, the carrier is now dead serious about making sure that it has a range of products running Google&#8217;s operating system.</p>
<p>While many will observe that the company&#8217;s interest in Android appears to be timed closely with the loss of its iPhone exclusivity, the company said the strategy shift has been in the works for many months and has more to do with the fact that the company is moving to faster networks and needs devices that will really tap their power.<br />

<p>&#8220;They create highly functional, highly capable smartphones that run really well with our network,&#8221; Chief Marketing Officer David Christopher said. &#8220;That hits the sweet spot of our network.&#8221;</p>
<p>Whatever the case, AT&#038;T has committed to having a dozen new Android products this year, including both phones and tablets. </p>
<p>The company <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/att-and-friends-talk-up-4g-network-new-devices/">introduced the first three phones at January&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show</a>, where it showed off Android smartphones from Samsung and HTC, as well as the intriguing Motorola Atrix, which is a powerful Android phone on its own, but can also plug into a laptop dock and power a full desktop Web browsing experience. It is also trying to break new pricing ground in selling the HTC Inspire for just $99 with a new contract.</p>
<p>However, there&#8217;s more to the strategy than just interesting devices at low prices. Christopher said AT&#038;T is committed to working more closely with phone makers and Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Atrix is the best example of that,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We got involved very early in development of that product with Motorola and Google.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, the company isn&#8217;t looking to do all kinds of work to customize Android. </p>
<p>&#8220;We don’t think we have to control every element of the smartphone at all,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Our strategy has been more to partner smartly and add value where we think we have the strongest assets to bring to bear.&#8221;</p>
<p>Christopher pointed to location services, such as a feature that helps keep tabs on family members, as an example of where the company sees investment paying off. Carrier billing for apps and services is another area where the company has tried to lead, he said.</p>
<p>While many of the 12 Android devices planned for 2011 are phones, some will also be tablets, Christopher said, including the <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/tablets-flying-fast-and-furious-at-ces/">Motorola Xoom that was announced at CES</a>. However, Christopher won&#8217;t say when that device&#8211;which is headed soon to Verizon&#8211;will make it to AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>Christopher said the tablet arena is still wide open and that the company is looking far and wide in terms of which devices to offer. In addition to the iPad&#8211;which AT&#038;T already carries&#8211;and the Android devices, other device makers such as Research in Motion and Hewlett-Packard are taking aim at the space.</p>
<p>&#8220;There’s going to be tablet innovation happening across the industry,&#8221; Christopher said. &#8220;Over time, I think the market will choose.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the meantime, Christopher said, the company will follow the same strategy it has taken with phones&#8211;offer lots of options.</p>
<p>&#8220;There are others as well,&#8221; he said, suggesting there are some other brands that could also find their way onto the company&#8217;s shelves. &#8220;We are casting a very wide net.&#8221;</p>
<p>AT&#038;T also wants to find ways to get customers to have multiple devices running on its network. The company has taken a step toward that with the <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20110202/att-adding-hotspot-support-improving-tethering-deal/">introduction of a new mobile hotspot plan</a> that offers more data to customers who are sharing their phone&#8217;s data connection with other devices, either directly or over Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>But more can be done, Christopher said.</p>
<p>Among the options would be to have some sort of pool plan, where a customer could share data across multiple devices. Christopher said that is among many pricing possibillites that AT&#038;T is considering: &#8220;That is one that potentially is interesting.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While Google had lots of nice things to say during its <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110202/live-talking-tablet-from-googles-honeycomb-event/">presentation on Honeycomb</a> on Wednesday, there were also lots of questions that got raised but were not necessarily answered.<br />

Following the event&#8211;and a <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110202/mobilized-gets-hands-on-with-googles-honeycomb-video">brief hands-on demo of Honeycomb</a>&#8211;Mobilized and a few other reporters cornered Google exec Hugo Barra and pressed him on some of these issues, including just how big a dent he thinks that Android tablets can make on the huge lead established by Apple with the iPad.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to say,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve put our best foot forward. Now it&#8217;s up to the ecosystem to make it flourish.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, he noted that hardware makers are eager to have a more competitive product to counter Apple&#8217;s tablet. &#8220;We think that (device makers) are incredibly motivated,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Motorola, which worked closely with Google on the development of Honeycomb, is due to be the first out with the Xoom, which will ship later in the first quarter. T-Mobile hopes to have its first Honeycomb tablet, the 3-D-capable G-Slate, <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110201/ahead-of-verizon-iphone-t-mobile-announces-samsung-galaxy-s-4g-details-g-slate-honeycomb-tablet/">out later this spring</a>.</p>
<p>On the topic of the Android market, Barra said that the combination of a new Web-based store and the addition of in-app purchasing were key moves in improving Google&#8217;s app sales experience&#8211;a process that even Google has had trouble executing. The Web store, he said, will work on any modern computer browser and allows developers to much better highlight products and users to much more easily find what they are looking for.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think this is a significant step toward a better market experience,&#8221; Barra said. &#8220;There&#8217;s more to do to make it a frictionless discovery and purchase experience.&#8221; He noted that the company is also working to add carrier billing more broadly, among other payment options. The in-app buying option, in particular, is a great addition that allows for more types of business models, he said. (Not to mention it&#8217;s something that Apple has had for a while now).</p>
<p>However, Barra added that, unlike with Apple, Google is not going to mandate that developers use its in-app buying option. &#8220;Android is an open platform,&#8221; he said. Developers can do whatever they want. That&#8217;s the beauty of an open platform.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, one of the downsides of openness is the potential for fragmentation, a concern frequently raised with Android. That issue was heightened somewhat with the release of Honeycomb, since it introduced features that, for now anyway, are only available on tablets and not on phones.</p>
<p>Barra said that some of those features would be making their way back to the phone, but wouldn&#8217;t offer specifics on timing.</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot of the things we have created for Honeycomb will make their way back into phones as well&#8211;things like the visual themes, some of the thinking on notifications, for example.&#8221;</p>
<p>Just how that re-integration will occur is unclear, though. Honeycomb is Android 3.0, but for now it is going to run only on tablets and other big-screen devices. Asked whether there will be a version 3.-something for phones, and when those features would come to the phone, Barra said it&#8217;s too soon to say. &#8220;We really don&#8217;t know,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a conversation we are just beginning to have right now internally with the team.&#8221;</p>
<p>In any case, developers seemed largely pleased with Wednesday&#8217;s developments. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very excited about the ability to do in-app purchases in Honeycomb,&#8221; said William Hurley, CTO of mobile developer <a href="http://www.chaoticmoon.com/">Chaotic Moon Studios</a>. &#8220;It opens a whole new world of possibilites from both a design and revenue perspective.&#8221;</p>
<p>Casual-game maker Zynga, which counts on in-app sales of virtual goods in its business model, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110202/zynga-leverages-todays-android-improvements-for-mobile-expansion/">also praised the move</a> as a huge win for the Android platform.</p>
<p>“It’s massive for us,&#8221; Zynga’s Paul Bettner told Mobilized on Wednesday.</p>
<p>As for what Google showed off with Honeycomb, Hurley said it should help Google and Android app developers close the gap with the experience on Apple&#8217;s products. &#8220;Many of the features announced today will empower the development community to produce apps that are better positioned to compete with apps available on other platforms,&#8221; he said.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After Google finished <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110202/live-talking-tablet-from-googles-honeycomb-event/">putting Honeycomb through its paces</a>, the throngs of reporters were turned loose into a packed and quite small demo area to get our hot little hands on some Motorola tablets running the OS.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Matt Williams was named CEO of Digg late last summer, just a week after the social news service pushed a long-awaited relaunch that went terribly wrong, taking its site down and upsetting users (and when Digg users are angry, they let you know!).</p>
<p>Now, five months into the job, Williams is finding a voice of his own, separate from Digg founder Kevin Rose&#8217;s, and trying it out on the Digg community; the longtime veteran of Amazon recently participated in a well-received Digg Dialogg video interview, posted on Tuesday, to answer user questions. (It&#8217;s viewable <a href="http://tv.digg.com/diggdialogg/mattwilliams">here</a>).</p>

<p>&#8220;There was a launch that was in violent disagreement with what our community expected out of the Web site,&#8221; Williams told Leo Laporte, who facilitated the interview based on Digg users&#8217; questions. &#8220;It&#8217;s truly a tragedy of the ages, to some extent.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Digg is still a &#8220;very vibrant Web site,&#8221; with close to 20 million monthly unique visitors, Williams said, and the opportunity to hone a focus on social news that other companies may not have.</p>
<p>(Plus, despite layoffs, a perceived lack of relevancy relative to other social start-ups and multiple leadership changes, Digg still has plenty of money in the bank.)</p>
<p>&#8220;It is our top priority to rejuvenate the community,&#8221; Williams said.</p>
<p>Digg&#8217;s latest launch, called V4, was seen by many as a move to devalue the site&#8217;s homegrown community. V4 was the most significant in a string of product changes that took power away from the small body of users that set the agenda for the news site and gave a stronger voice to publishers and Digg&#8217;s own curators. And V4 was also an overdue, complete technology overhaul that left out many much-loved features.</p>
<p>In the Laporte interview, Williams quickly tackled precise details about previous features the Digg community wants reinstalled, noting, for instance, that the site has already brought back the &#8220;bury&#8221; button, allowing users to counteract other users&#8217; votes on submitted stories. He said Digg is also planning future features such as a honing of its news-ranking algorithms for slower weekend traffic, when less-worthy stories may make it to the top.</p>

<p>Beyond those tweaks, Digg will make large-scale efforts to become more personalized, said Williams, and to create communities  around specific topics. That&#8217;s not necessarily something that the old-time crowd will love, but it may make the site more useful for a broader audience.</p>
<p>Williams encouraged users not just to visit the site, but to comment on and vote up stories with Diggs; those participatory behaviors have decreased as a portion of overall traffic since the launch of V4, he said.</p>
<p>Being the voice of Digg is no small task, and it&#8217;s not just because of the company&#8217;s hypercritical user base. Digg has long been associated with the founding presence of TV and online video host Kevin Rose. And until Williams joined, Rose had been interim CEO after longtime leader Jay Adelson was pushed out of the company in April. Now Rose is occupied with his many angel investments, a new video show and a newsletter called &#8220;<a href="http://tinyletter.com/foundation">Foundation</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p>Digg users were <a href="http://digg.com/news/technology/digg_dialogg_episode_23_with_digg_ceo_matt_williams_leo_laporte">uncharacteristically positive</a> in the comments section of the Williams interview entry. (The friendly tone makes me wonder if the old crowd has indeed high-tailed it somewhere else!) &#8220;Digg is in good hands,&#8221; said one. &#8220;I must say that Digg is doing a fantastic job listening to the community and implementing new features,&#8221; said another. One user even acknowledged, &#8220;I realize changes take time to implement.&#8221;</p>

<p>This week, I tested several wedding-planning applications for mobile devices that may get couples reaching for an iPhone instead of a binder. As a recently engaged person, I tested them for realistic usability, time-saving techniques and friendly user interfaces. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">The Strength of The Knot</h5>
<p>It&#8217;s nearly impossible to get engaged without quickly growing addicted to <a href="http://TheKnot.com">TheKnot.com</a>, a one-stop shop for brides and grooms alike. Here, couples can create budgets using a template that estimates cost per item, and they can import guest lists in Excel spreadsheet format. They can also page through photos of other weddings held in their area, or obsessively chat online with other engaged people whose friends are tired of listening to them.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, The Knot Inc. doesn&#8217;t have one mobile app that replicates all of the rich features on its website, though typing http://mobile.theknot.com into the mobile browser on a device like the BlackBerry, iPhone or Android phones opens a condensed version of some features, including the ever-ticking countdown (201 days to go!) and checklists sorted into Category, Date or Reminders. </p>

<p>The company does offer two free iPhone apps (Android apps are in development) that focus on certain features of the website: The Knot Wedding Dress Look Book and The Knot Wedding 911. The Look Book encourages brides to find just the right wedding gown by entering details about themselves like body type, personality, type of wedding and best physical feature. Wedding 911 includes hundreds of wedding questions that are collected, sorted into eight categories and answered by the site&#8217;s editor in chief. </p>
<p>IPad owners can get their Knot fix by reading a digital magazine with features like videos demonstrating do-it-yourself save-the-date cards. The iPad app itself is free, but the magazine costs $4.99 per issue. Subscriptions aren&#8217;t available.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Get Yourself Registered</h5>
<p>Thanks to the iPhone&#8217;s built-in camera, couples don&#8217;t need a store&#8217;s barcode scanner gun to add items to their registries; instead, they can take photos of products&#8217; barcodes with their phone to automatically add items to registries. The <a href="http://MyRegistry.com">MyRegistry.com</a> Universal Wishlist With Barcode Scanner ($0.99), WeddingScan ($0.99), Registry Stop (free) and Gift Registry 360 Scan and Add (free) are four such iPhone apps that perform this function. If the barcode photo doesn&#8217;t work, users can manually type in the product name and take their own photo of it to illustrate. </p>

<h5 class="subhed">Wedding Planner-Approved</h5>
<p>A friend of mine who&#8217;s a successful wedding planner in North Carolina recommended two apps for the iPhone and iPad: Brides Wedding Genius and My Wedding Concierge. Both are available in free versions, though a $4.99 version of My Wedding Concierge is also available for the iPad.</p>
<p>Brides Wedding Genius is a free iPhone app that focuses on dresses, jewelry and travel destinations for a wedding or a honeymoon. Users conduct searches for content by plugging in preferences such as price, style of ring or destination. Results can be starred and saved to a list of favorites. A helpful &#8220;Find Online&#8221; tab quickly opens each item&#8217;s website within the app. A $2.99 upgrade will add features and sync the app with <a href="http://BridesWeddingGenius.com">BridesWeddingGenius.com</a>.</p>
<p>My Wedding Concierge is a self-described inspiration engine, and I tested the full version of this app on my iPad. The home screen of this app offers a large search box and an &#8220;Inspire Me!&#8221; option below this box. Inspiration comes in the form of suggested wedding blogs, of which there are many, I&#8217;ve discovered since becoming engaged. I like that My Wedding Concierge tries to sort through these blogs to return relevant content, even though some blogs seemed a bit unrelated to my searches.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Make Contact </h5>
<p>The $9.99 iWedding Deluxe iPhone app works well if you have a lot of people already added as contacts in your iPhone; a shortcut lets you move those contacts over to the app in one step, thus keeping names of transportation companies, photographers, the ceremony officiant and rental companies in one central spot. </p>
<p>This app&#8217;s Home screen shows a countdown clock that measures time down to the second after users input the time of their wedding during setup. A section called The Guide helps locate nearby wedding vendors using GPS and Google Maps. It also lists useful blogs and tips for setting a budget, choosing a ceremony venue and proper etiquette.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">BlackBerry and Android</h5>
<p>I found a handful of wedding planning apps on the Android and BlackBerry platforms, including a $1.99 Android app called MyWeddingBudget and a $2.99 BlackBerry app called Wedding Organizer. But both of these felt rather bare bones and not as intuitive as the iPhone and iPad apps I used.</p>
<p>If all else fails, the $0.99 Bridezilla Tamer iPhone app will try to add humor to the situation with lines like, &#8220;You&#8217;re right, it&#8217;s perfectly reasonable that our cake costs three months&#8217; rent because we&#8217;ll remember how it tasted forever!&#8221; </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Although the immediate focus of Honeycomb was to get Android ready for tablets, the operating system is really designed to enable Google&#8217;s software to power all manner of mobile devices.</p>
<p>“Tablet was the focus, but the changes we did also free it up to be more flexible for other contexts as well,” Honeycomb lead designer Matias Duarte told Mobilized. “It’s about really eliminating all the barriers to all the different kinds of form factors that people might want to interact with.”</p>
<p>Google plans to <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110128/google-to-show-off-honeycomb-next-week/">show off its work with Honeycomb</a>, also known as Android 3.0, at an event on Wednesday. There, it will talk about the specific changes it has made, as well as the vision behind the shift.<br />

Duarte, who <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100527/exclusive-palm-loses-mobile-design-guru-matias-duarte/">joined Google from Palm last year</a>, said there were really three major areas of focus. Clearly one was to change the way Android worked so that it was suited to devices larger than a phone. But beyond that, Duarte said, Honeycomb was about evolving Android to be better overall at mobile computing tasks. Finally, Duarte said, Honeycomb is designed to make the operating system more usable.</p>
<p>“All of those are works in progress,” he said. “Our work is far from done in any of those.”</p>
<p>One of the most notable changes in Honeycomb is the fact that it no longer has a reliance on physical hardware buttons. That paves the way for all kinds of devices, Duarte said.</p>
<p>“Some of them might look more like a laptop…some of them might not even have soft buttons,&#8221; Duarte said. &#8220;They might be purely gesturally driven.” </p>
<p>The first Honeycomb devices, however, <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101207/backstage-at-d-mobile-googles-andy-rubin-talks-tablet-music/">will all be tablets</a>, starting with the Motorola Xoom, which is headed to Verizon in February.</p>
<p>But, if he has done his job right, Duarte said that hardware makers will be able to create devices that Google never even contemplated. “Whatever they come up with, the most important thing is that we have given that flexibility.”</p>
<p>That could range to attaching Android to a refrigerator or creating products aimed at a specific demographic, such as young kids or the elderly. Heck, someone could even use Android to build a big table computer to take on Microsoft’s Surface. “I can’t see why not,” Duarte said. “I can imagine that.”</p>
<p>As for the potential tablets in particular, Duarte notes that those who initially brushed aside Apple’s iPad when it debuted a year ago underestimated the impact of what Apple did in bringing the multi-touch screen to a larger-size device.</p>
<p>“I think those skeptics were short-sighted,” Duarte said. “That’s the genius of what Apple achieved with that iPad.”</p>
<p>The tablet experience, he said, is largely about  the touch interface, which changes people’s relationship with the content they are viewing. In moving the content into a closer and more comfortable position, people relate more and have more emotional experiences, he said.</p>
<p>“People have seen screens that size and have been taking screens that size to bed with them and to their coffee shops with them. They’ve been sitting with them hunched over and in all kinds of contorted positions” Duarte said. “But having that touch interface means that you can interact  with the Internet or with a book or with a video player in a totally different posture, in a totally different way. It changes how you engage with the content, how long you engage with the content and even how emotionally close you are to it.”</p>
<p>With Honeycomb, Duarte said, he wanted to make sure that Google was opening Android up to enable those kinds of experiences, but also improving the underpinnings of the operating system to be a more powerful computing experience.</p>
<p>One of the changes, he said, is recognizing that people use tablets differently than they use their phone, even if they are running many of the same types of programs.</p>
<p>“It used to be that Android was something that you held in your hand and you would use in these relatively fine slices of time throughout the day, and then when you sit down at a table or a desk or you go home, that Android stays in your pocket or goes in a charger,” he said. “Now your experience with Android is alternating between these fine slices and these longer periods….So we need to think of Android as an experience that you have 24/7, throughout the entire day. What that means is that you are doing a lot more and you are doing a lot more for longer periods of time.”</p>
<p>That shift, he said, means that the operating system needs to do a better job of shifting between tasks and notifying users of what things are going on in the background. With Honeycomb, Duarte said, Google is improving its recent application switching feature that lets users easily see the places they have been working and point to them, while at the same time getting better notifications from background activities without being constantly interrupted. </p>
<p>Duarte characterized Honeycomb as the biggest change since the debut of Android, but it is also the latest in a series of updates that have come in rapid succession. In many cases, both device makers and wireless carriers have struggled to keep pace with Google, often failing to allow their devices to stay updated with Google&#8217;s latest and greatest, even if the phones themselves were capable of being upgraded.</p>
<p>But while others wonder whether Google is moving too quickly in evolving Android, Duarte said he wonders why the rest of the industry is moving so slowly, and promises even faster change to come.</p>
<p>“Using computers suck, to this day,” Duarte said. “It&#8217;s one of my daily frustrations that the rate of change in computing experiences is so slow.”</p>
<p>In particular, Duarte said that the basic interaction with programs and files hasn’t changed much. “It’s the same way I did [things] in high school on a Mac Plus.”</p>
<p>One piece of that shift, Durate said, is evolving our expectations of computing devices from a world in which computer users put in information and turn a crank to get a result to one that more resembles an ongoing dialogue. </p>
<p>“What I am looking for is that sense that you get when jazz musicians improvise together,” he said. “The computer should be doing things in concert with you, in support [of] you, not acting like a servant waiting for commands and then returning with results. That’s a little aspirational, I know.”</p>
<p>Honeycomb will get the company partway to that vision, but Duarte said much of that work will reveal itself over time. But make no mistake, he said&#8211;although they don’t appear to be the stuff of science fiction, computers are starting to become extensions of the human brain.</p>
<p>“People always think of cybernetics with computers as being this thing that happens far in the future, and you have Star Trek, Borg-like scary things” Duarte said. “But the way computers are used today through social networking, through email, through accessing information like Google&#8211;they are already becoming [those] cybernetic parts of our mind.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In its iconic &#8220;1984&#8243; Super Bowl ad for the Macintosh, Apple went after IBM, pitching itself as an alternative to a monoculture of cookie-cutter computers. Fast-forward 27 years and Motorola is trying to use the same approach to attack Apple.<br />

In a Super Bowl teaser ad posted to YouTube on Monday, Motorola pitches its forthcoming Xoom tablet as an alternative to Apple&#8217;s iPad.</p>
<p>&#8220;2011 looks a lot like 1984,&#8221; Motorola says in the ad, which features an image of the Earth surrounded by Apple&#8217;s white headphones. &#8220;One authority. One design. One way to work. It&#8217;s time for more choices.&#8221;</p>
<p>The ad then touts some of the Xoom&#8217;s features, such as its dual-core chip, HD video playback, front- and rear-facing cameras and its ability to play Flash.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/tablets-flying-fast-and-furious-at-ces/">tablet wars are clearly heating up</a>, with all the players staking out their space. RIM also <a href="http://bizblog.blackberry.com/2011/01/blackberry-playbook-business-video/">posted a video on its Web site</a>, touting the business capabilities of its yet-to-be-released PlayBook tablet. The video shows the PlayBook being connected to a BlackBerry and using a Flash-enabled dashboard from SAP&#8217;s Business Objects unit. RIM plans to talk more about its developer plans at an event on Thursday in San Francisco.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Google is <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110128/google-to-show-off-honeycomb-next-week/">hosting an event on Wednesday</a> to go deeper into its tablet-oriented Honeycomb version of Android. The Xoom, which debuts next month, is to be the first device running Honeycomb.</p>
<p>Mobilized will be on hand to provide coverage of both the RIM and Google events.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2936" title="Smoopa-save-with-price-alert" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Smoopa-save-with-price-alert-189x300.png" alt="" width="189" height="300" />That&#8217;s similar to other shopping apps such as those from e-commerce powerhouse <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&amp;docId=1000291661">Amazon</a>, but Smoopa has a few neat features.</p>
<p>First of all, Smoopa always includes shipping costs in its prices. It also shows recent prices for the 12 million products in its database, so you can get an idea of whether to buy now or later (kind of like what Farecast/Bing Travel does for air flights). And it gives users the ability to track the price of a product and be alerted when it comes down. Users can also share a product price with friends through in-app Facebook integration.</p>
<p>Boston-based Smoopa currently has data from Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Buy.com and TigerDirect. CEO Mendel Chuang said the company doesn&#8217;t carry Amazon feeds yet, in part because the company obscures shipping costs in the product listings it provides through its API.</p>
<p>Chuang reported that retailers are increasingly comfortable with customers pulling out smartphones while they browse, even if it makes them likely to spend their money elsewhere. Best Buy has a policy of matching its own online prices, which are apparently often lower than those on its shelves. And after all, you&#8217;re already in the store, so you may value the convenience of buying a product right there, where shipping is always free.</p>
<p>Smoopa is available for free in the U.S. through Android Market, and online at <a href="http://www.smoopa.com/">www.smoopa.com</a>. The company is working on an iOS version.</p>
<p>Chuang, who formerly led marketing for Google Friend Connect, launched Smoopa with a team of three other MIT grads. The company is bootstrapped and expects to make money from affiliate revenue sharing. It built its bar-code-reading technology in-house.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1986" title="Mitek Systems Mobile Deposit App " src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/mobilecheckdeposit-270x300.jpg" alt="" width="270" height="300" />A report conducted by <a href="http://www.cinsightinc.com/">Corporate Insight</a> found that all but one of the banks it tracks offer account holders at least one mobile solution, if not multiple options, including apps, mobile sites and text messaging.</p>
<p>The report named Chase as the most advanced, followed by Bank of America and Wells Fargo.</p>
<p>The adoption of smartphones by consumers, plus the threat of not keeping up with the competition, has led banks to roll out new features quickly, the report said.</p>
<p>The most common feature provided was the ability to locate nearby ATMs or branches, while more advanced features included being able to pay bills, receive balance information and transfer money in-house, the report found.</p>
<p>Chase was highlighted as the most advanced because of its &#8220;remote deposit capture&#8221; feature, which allows you to deposit a check by taking a picture of it.</p>
<p>That feature is frequently provided by a San Diego-based company, Mitek Systems, which said this month <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mitek-systems-seeing-record-deployment-of-its-patented-mobile-deposit-application-114113069.html">that at least 10 well-known financial institutions, including three of the top 10 retail banks</a>, have deployed its picture-taking services.</p>
<p>PayPal and USAA are also customers, and in the first three days the USAA app was available, <a href="http://moconews.net/article/419-1.5-million-in-checks-deposited-via-iphone-app-in-first-three-days/">$1.5 million in deposits were made using the phone&#8217;s camera</a>.</p>
<p>Other findings from the study:</p>
<ul>
<li>40 percent of banks offer text messaging as a way to get account balance information.</li>
<li>83 percent offer mobile applications for bill paying.</li>
<li>U.S. Bank and Chase are the only two firms to offer rewards information through mobile banking.</li>

<p>An in-app payment option was supposed to be released last quarter, but Google delayed the launch in order to get more feedback from developers, who had been very busy at the end of the year with Christmas app development and sales, according to Chu.</p>
<p>(Meanwhile, start-ups like Zong are <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101208/zong-opens-up-mobile-payment-platform-to-all-android-developers/">already offering in-app payments for Android</a>, but Chu said he&#8217;d prefer developers to wait until Google can get its own version out to provide a consistent user experience.)</p>
<p>In-app payments are important because they enable developers to sell virtual goods and premium features, both major potential sources of mobile revenue in addition to paid apps and advertising.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2794" title="150px-Android_Market" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/150px-Android_Market.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Android has a ways to go to convince developers that its app platform is on par with Apple&#8217;s iPhone, especially in terms of monetization. &#8220;We are not happy with the payout purchases in Android Market,&#8221; Chu said.</p>
<p>Google has been slow to <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101223/googles-improving-the-android-market-finally/">form partnerships with carriers</a>, and so far has done so only with T-Mobile USA and AT&amp;T, but Chu said this is currently a major area of investment.</p>
<p>Asked whether carriers get too large a cut, Chu said that carriers deserve a share of the profits since they significantly subsidize the cost of phones.</p>
<p>Chu acknowledged problems with Android Market&#8217;s initial approach, mentioning Google has made changes, such as taking a more active approach to removing bad apps, and reducing the refund window (the length of time customers have to return paid apps) from 24 hours to 15 minutes.</p>
<p>Chu said his team is actively working on products to improve Android Market merchandising and app discovery with better search and lists, as well as an improved ranking system.</p>
<p>Google is open to feedback about changing the refund window, said Chu, but it will draw a hard line about refunds for virtual goods. Not gonna happen, he said.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/saynow-196x300.png" alt="" title="saynow" width="196" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2285" />I&#8217;ve been a Google Voice user since before it was even called Google Voice. Back in 2007, I was fascinated by the potential of GrandCentral&#8211;the service Google acquired and transformed into Google Voice.</p>
<p>For one thing, once I gave out my new number to a handful of friends, I had this one goofy friend for whom I recorded a custom greeting. Every time he would call, I&#8217;d let it go to voicemail and he&#8217;d start every message laughing at some silly in-joke I&#8217;d leave for him in the greeting. Okay, I grant you not many people would go to the trouble to do that, but if you knew this guy, you just might. <strong>Update:</strong> A few readers pointed out in the comments that this feature is re-enabled in Google Voice, and they&#8217;re correct though it&#8217;s not exactly easy to find.</p>
<p>Ever since GrandCentral became Google Voice, it&#8217;s been a lot less fun to use. That custom-greeting feature is gone, as are some of the funnier Web calling buttons that GrandCentral had offered. Maybe that&#8217;s one of the reasons behind today&#8217;s acquisition by Google of <a href="http://www.saynow.com/info/press_google">SayNow</a>.</p>
<p>Details are scant about what Google has in mind, but a source close to the deal tells us that the intent on Google&#8217;s part is to make Google Voice &#8220;even better in a world of Skype and Facetime,&#8221; which implies that the next step for Google Voice is some form of video calling.</p>
<p>SayNow made a name for itself by giving celebrities like Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers (remember them?) and the cast of &#8220;Glee&#8221; a phone number for fans to call and hear the occasional message. And at the start of the football season, ESPN used it to send the message embedded below from former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka to some 1.6 million fans on Facebook. Another feature gave celebs a way to hold live conference calls that fans could dial in and listen to. The biggest SayNow client was the rapper <a href="http://www.thedeandreway.com/">Soulja Boy</a>, who racked up 50 million calls totaling some 100 million minutes of call time. If nothing else, Google can learn from the team at SayNow how to promote the service and get people interested in using it.</p>
<p>SayNow also has a serious side, an enterprise application called <a href="http://blog.saynow.com/2010/09/28/big-call-marks-saynow%e2%80%99s-entry-into-enterprise-applications/">Big Call</a>, aimed at making conference calls for businesses easy. The company says it was built by an intern in a week.</p>
<p>The deal for SayNow comes on the same day that Google made its long-awaited <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110125/googles-latest-assault-on-carriers-number-porting-comes-to-google-voice/">number-porting feature official</a>, suggesting that Google Voice is going to be the focus of a lot more time and attention in the coming months.</p>
