<p>In a <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/flash-focus.html">blog post by one of its execs</a>, titled &#8220;Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5,&#8221; Adobe said what had already been reported: That it would no longer be developing its well-known Flash for mobile devices.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the key graph:</p>
<p>&#8220;Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last night, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/gone-in-a-flash-adobe-said-halting-development-on-mobile-version-of-its-plug-in/">reports surfaced</a> that the high-profile software company &#8212; whose Flash technology has been a flagship product &#8212; was halting development on the mobile version of its browser plug-in.</p>
<p>Now, Adobe will focus its PC Web browser business on tools that allow Flash developers to create mobile apps by packaging their code to run on Adobe&#8217;s AIR platform.</p>
<p>The move has big implications for Adobe going forward and also for mobile device makers, such as Google and Research In Motion. But <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/horse-flash-apples-steve-jobs-on-adobe-vendetta-in-2010-at-d8-video/">not Apple</a>.</p>
<p>As Ina Fried wrote: </p>
<p>&#8220;The move, if true, would be a major blow to Android device makers, who have long touted Flash compatibility as a key competitive advantage over Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad.</p>
<p>It would also mark a posthumous vindication for former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who took a controversial stand by not supporting Flash on Apple&#8217;s mobile products.&#8221;</p>
<p>Turns out Jobs was prescient, as usual.</p>

<p>Adobe is all about enabling designers and developers to create the most expressive content possible, regardless of platform or technology. <p>At a 2010 onstage interview with Walt Mossberg and me at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs spent a lot of time &#8212; and with considerable passion &#8212; talking about his company&#8217;s decision to dump Adobe&#8217;s popular Flash technology in its iPhone and iPad devices. </p>
<p>While he insisted that he wasn&#8217;t out to crush Adobe &#8212; instead using the metaphor of &#8220;choosing what horses to ride&#8221; &#8212; Jobs explained that the software technology was buggy, no longer useful, and, therefore, needed to be put out to pasture.</p>
<p>&#8220;We try to pick things that are in their springs &#8230; sometimes you just have to pick the things that are the right things going forward,&#8221; said Jobs plainly. &#8220;Flash looks like a technology that had its day and is waning.&#8221; According to Jobs, HTML5 was the new colt to back.</p>
<p>As to the implications on Apple&#8217;s mobile devices if consumers did not agree with his choice, he noted that &#8220;it all works itself out,&#8221; adding that a new iPad was then selling every three seconds.</p>
<p>&#8220;People seem to be liking iPads,&#8221; said Jobs with his patented grin.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an interesting video to watch now &#8212; along with this one on Adobe CEO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/the-fate-of-flash-on-mobile-devices-heres-the-adobe-ceo-talking-about-it-at-d9/">Shantanu Narayen</a> talking about the issue a year later at <strong>D9</strong> &#8212; because of reports that first surfaced last night, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/gone-in-a-flash-adobe-said-halting-development-on-mobile-version-of-its-plug-in/">that the high-profile software company</a> &#8212; whose Flash technology has been a flagship product &#8212; was halting development on the mobile version of its browser plug-in.</p>

<p>With the continuing negotiations between AOL and high-profile TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington likely to come to some conclusion soon, the big question remaining is whether he will appear at its flagship conference, <a href="http://disrupt.techcrunch.com/SF2011/">TechCrunch Disrupt</a>, which officially begins tomorrow.</p>
<p>Sources said that seems more likely than not, although the talks between AOL and Arrington are not resolved as yet and his appearance at the highly lucrative conference is part of a whole package.</p>
<p>But it seems unlikely that neither Arrington nor AOL CEO Tim Armstrong and content chief Arianna Huffington wants to damage TechCrunch Disrupt, which makes piles of moolah from sponsors and fees, attracts thousands of attendees, and where a plethora of promising start-ups compete with each other.</p>
<p>And, in fact, some of the slated speakers I have contacted have said that they have not been told of any changes in the program.</p>
<p>A hackathon of those entrepreneurs is now taking place before the main event, where well-known Silicon Valley players will be interviewed on stage by the staff of TechCrunch.</p>
<p>The conference is mostly run by TechCrunch exec Heather Harde, as well as the site&#8217;s leading editor Erick Schonfeld.</p>
<p>But, of course, TechCrunch Disrupt has starred Arrington, the larger-than-life blogger now turned venture capitalist.</p>
<p>That shift and how badly it was done is at the center of complex severance negotiations.</p>
<p>As I previously wrote, sources said the company has so far refused Arrington&#8217;s bold demand, posted on TechCrunch itself, to either give the popular tech news site &#8220;editorial independence&#8221; or sell it back to him.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110908/after-aol-rules-out-techcrunch-sale-to-arrington-tense-severance-negotiations-taking-place/">I wrote last week</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The situation between the popular tech blogger and top execs at the Internet company &#8212; which bought his site earlier this year &#8212; comes after a week of increasingly testy back and forth between them, after it was revealed that Arrington was starting his own $20 million venture fund called CrunchFund.</p>
<p>The move caused a media firestorm over the ethics and propriety of the move, which was followed by an ugly internal war at the company, with Arrington and TechCrunch staffers on one side and Armstrong and Huffington on the other.</p>
<p>(Full disclosure: Although no one cares what I think, I consider the deal appalling and wrote that it was a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110902/crunchfund-unethical-ventures-pigpile-partners-no-matter-what-you-call-it-its-business-as-usual-in-silicon-valley/">&#8220;giant, greedy Silicon Valley pig pile.&#8221;</a> Now, it seems to be 56 percent piggier!)</p>
<p>After many confusing messages from AOL, Arrington was removed from his longtime job at TechCrunch and placed in its venture arm, after editorial objections from Huffington.</p>
<p>That had supposedly been the the plan until it all blew up, with reveleations about what the CrunchFund deal &#8212; which includes $10 million from AOL &#8212; meant to TechCrunch and its news gathering. </p>
<p>That seemed clear from a widely cited quote from CrunchFund investor and well-know Silicon Valley entrepreneur Reid Hoffman to me last week:</p>
<p>&#8220;TechCrunch will get some real deal flow from entrepreneurs that we would otherwise not see, because they have established a prominent position as the SV/Tech industry information feed. As many tech entrepreneurs read it &#8212; both within Silicon Valley and globally &#8212; and view the information news feed to be their target for announcing themselves to the world, CrunchFund will have access to deal flow to these diverse and early stage companies. Some of these companies will be the kind of early stage companies with billion-dollar potential that Greylock invests in.&#8221;</p>
<p>There you had it: No one can afford to be out of the deal flow in these competitive times, even if it means cutting corners and using a tech news site as fodder.</p>
<p>Arrington obviously has another view of the deal he struck with Armstrong and, sources said, wants his powerful tech news platform back. He has been talking to many Silicon Valley power players about the situation, said sources.</p></blockquote>

<p>You&#8217;d think there would be a party in Redmond, Wash., today, as software giant Microsoft soundly beat Wall Street expectations in its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110428/microsoft-3q-earnings-beats-the-street-but-will-stock-rise-finally-follow/">third-quarter earnings released</a> earlier today.</p>
<p>Microsoft said it had revenue of $16.43 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2011, which was up 13 percent from a year ago. Net income was $5.23 billion, or 61 cents per share, a rise of 31 percent and 36 percent, respectively.</p>
<p>The surge was led by sales of Office, Kinect and Xbox and a stronger economy.</p>
<p>But there are shadows, too, as results were dragged down by weaker revenues for its flagship Windows unit.</p>
<p>The report comes as Microsoft&#8217;s stock continues to lag, declining 14 percent for the year.</p>
<p><em>Buzz kill!</em></p>
<p>BoomTown livedblogged the call for Wall Street analysts:</p>
<p><strong>2:30 pm PT:</strong> Peter Klein, Microsoft&#8217;s CFO, who sounds super peppy, outlined the strong quarter, especially for its Office products.</p>
<p>He also mentioned some glitches, such as Microsoft&#8217;s still-struggling efforts to increase revenue per search (RPS) in its longtime search and online advertising partnership with Yahoo and the slower growth of the PC sector upon which the software giant&#8217;s Windows relies.</p>
<p>PC should stand for &#8220;possibly crappy,&#8221; but good-boy Klein did not say so.</p>
<p>Investor relations dude Bill Koefoed also read through the news, sounding at times like a sports announcer on a cable television network.</p>
<p>&#8220;Quuuuaaadrupled&#8230;,&#8221; he intoned about one part of Microsoft&#8217;s business.</p>
<p>This all went on for a while, since Microsoft has a lot of divisions. Servers &#038; Tools. Online Services. Entertainment and Devices. Fashion &#038; Cute Tops.</p>
<p>Okay, not that one, but a girl can dream.</p>
<p>It was all fun and games until Koefoed got to the Yahoo problem, which Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz had used as a cudgel in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100420/liveblogging-yahoos-first-quarter-earnings">her earnings report</a> recently.</p>
<p>Yes, it is a bummer. But soon it was back to the happy land of Xbox!</p>
<p>Klein said he was pleased with the results in a jaunty manner, which made me desperately wish Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer led the call.</p>
<p>Because he&#8217;s always one obnoxious query away from a volcanic popping off.</p>
<p>Which is why I love those Yahoo calls and Bartz.</p>
<p><em>Buzz kill!</em></p>
<p><strong>2:54 pm PT:</strong> That was fast&#8211;the call was quickly into questions.</p>
<p>The first is about COGS&#8211;cost of goods sold&#8211;and how it impacts gross margins.</p>
<p>Klein said the expenses were volume driven. I&#8217;d explain, but then I would fall asleep.</p>
<p>The next question was about stock buybacks.</p>
<p>That might get the stock up. Yeah, said Klein, they&#8217;ll keep doing that&#8211;not that it has helped much on the share price front.</p>
<p>More and more questions, about the PC market, the issues at Yahoo (let&#8217;s get that RPS up!), the Windows Phone 7 business.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be honest, I was a bit bored and started reading a riveting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-qa-arrington-says-the-real-conflict-of-interest-in-tech-reporting-has-nothing-to-do-with-money-2011-4?op=1">Business Insider interview</a> with TechCrunch&#8217;s Michael Arrington on his myriad <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110428/godspeed-on-that-investing-thing-yertle-but-i-still-have-some-questions-for-your-boss-arianna/">conflicts of interest related to his tech investing</a> while also blogging as a news guy.</p>
<p>Whatever you think about him, that dude is good copy.</p>
<p>Wait, back to growth rates for Office!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s going great, said Klein (hey, maybe Arrington will invest!).</p>
<p>The call wraps up on news of an upcoming investor conference, being held near Disney World.</p>
<p>Oooh, party time!</p>

<p>April showers bring&#8230;well, a bad month for the still-young stock of online content maker Demand Media.</p>
<p>After a successful IPO in January, shares of the Santa Monica, Calif., company had stayed largely in the mid-$20 range, including a high of $27.38.</p>
<p>That is, until this month, when gloom in the form of algorithm changes at Google&#8211;with the seemingly dulcet code name of &#8220;Panda&#8221; and designed to weed out poorly made content&#8211;appeared to hit SEO-heavy Demand hard.</p>
<p>At first, the updates by the search giant seemed not to effect Demand as much as other sites. But more recent tweaks have caused <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110417/demand-media-about-google-algo-impact-move-on-nothing-to-see-here">traffic to its flagship site, eHow.com, to be much more negatively impacted</a>.</p>
<p>And&#8211;presumably due to its search advertising-heavy business model&#8211;that worry then caused the stock to plummet from above $24 in the beginning of April to yesterday&#8217;s close of just above $15.</p>
<p>Since Demand went public, its shares are now down almost 34 percent.</p>

<p>Of course, this might all be needless panic on the part of Wall Street investors, but the drop has been all too real.</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, Demand acknowledged the dip, but also countered some third-party reports that were more dire.</p>
<p>It tried to staunch that worry on April 18, with a press release and blog post by its Media and Operations EVP Larry Fitzgibbon, which read in part:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>&#8230;Google recently made significant search algorithm changes in an update dubbed Panda that has rolled out in various capacities from late February thru mid-April. With respect to Panda’s mid-April update, some of our properties saw Google search referrals move up while other properties, including our largest property eHow.com, saw these referrals go down.</p>
<p>As I said in my prior post, we generally do not comment or speculate on changes by major search engines, as these changes can happen nearly daily. However, recent third-party reports attempting to estimate the impact to our search driven traffic, including one projecting a 2/3rds decline in eHow.com traffic, are so significantly overstated that we decided to comment. As discussed in our press release issued today, we currently expect that in Q2 2011 our owned and operated Content &#038; Media properties will generate year-over-year page view growth comparable to or greater than the year-over-year page view growth reported for Q2 2010. We have also reaffirmed our calendar year 2011 financial guidance in this press release.</p></blockquote>
<p>That&#8217;s why it will be interesting to see what Demand execs will say on its first-quarter earnings call next Thursday, May 5, to explain how it will cope with Panda and&#8211;more importantly&#8211;what it plans to do to minimize the <em>skadoosh</em> impact on its business and share price.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, he <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110403/sb-nation-sacks-aol-in-raid-of-former-engadget-team-for-competing-new-tech-site">hired away eight staffers from AOL&#8217;s Engadget</a> in order to create a competing tech news and gadget reviews site.</p>

<p>And now, according to sources close to the situation, the former AOL content head is close to hiring another former top AOL media exec, Marty Moe (pictured here), to manage it and also more niche sites the blog network is contemplating launching.</p>
<p>Sources said the hiring of Moe is not yet complete, but is close to being struck.</p>
<p>Tyler Bleszinski, SB Nation&#8217;s founder and sports editorial director, will continue to manage the start-up&#8217;s sports blog network, while Moe will focus on the company&#8217;s tech vertical and any other future categories.</p>
<p>Moe <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/top-aol-media-exec-marty-moe-to-depart-other-rumors-of-david-eun-ankling-not-so-much">left AOL less than a year ago</a>, after nine years working at the New York-based portal, including with Bankoff.</p>
<p>Both had been involved in the purchase of Weblogs Inc., which included the flagship Engadget site.</p>
<p>Now, it seems they will be trying to remake the concept of a content network, although in a more entrepreneurial and innovative setting.</p>
<p>The new tech site&#8211;which is still unnamed and will be helmed editorially by outgoing Engadget Editor in Chief Josh Topolsky&#8211;will debut some time in the fall. It is the first content expansion at the Washington, D.C., SB Nation, which has heretofore been exclusively focused on sports.</p>
<p>Topolsky will be joined by former Engadget managing editor Nilay Patel and also former staffers Paul Miller, Joanna Stern, Ross Miller, Chris Ziegler, Justin Glow and Dan Chilton.</p>
<p>All of the above had left Engadget in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110312/engadgets-top-editors-topolsky-and-patel-exit-from-aols-giant-tech-site">series of departures of late</a>, all due to increasing unhappiness with AOL&#8217;s management and content strategy.</p>
<p>Paul Miller and Ross Miller, who are not related, both stated publicly that they did not like the editorial direction AOL was going in, especially a controversial content strategy document titled &#8220;The AOL Way.&#8221;</p>
<p>New AOL content head Arianna Huffington has shifted toward a more journalistic path, but the talent bleed began before AOL&#8217;s $315 million purchase of the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>Many new upstart content sites such as SB Nation have begun to try to eat away at the big portal&#8217;s content strategy&#8211;pushed by its CEO Tim Armstrong&#8211;with perhaps more nimble efforts of their own.</p>
<p>And those smaller companies are also well funded.</p>
<p>SB Nation completed a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101108/sb-nation-raises-10-5-million-in-khosla-ventures-led-series-c-round">$10.5 million Series C venture round</a>, led by Khosla Ventures, in the fall.</p>
<p>It had already raised about $13 million in total funding from Accel Partners, Allen &#038; Company and Comcast Interactive Capital, as well as from angel investors such as Ted Leonsis and others in Silicon Valley.</p>

<p>Yesterday, BoomTown reported that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Mark Walker</a>, the head of the powerful Yahoo News site, was leaving the Internet giant for another company.</p>
<p>That company, sources said, will be Disney, where Walker will be leading a major overhaul of its flagship <a href="index">Disney.com</a> site.</p>
<p>The property, which has largely been a promotional and aggregation play for Disney&#8217;s many family-oriented offerings&#8211;such as its popular Disney Channel cable television shows&#8211;still sees 20 million unique visitors monthly.</p>
<p>Walker will report to Jimmy Pitaro, the former Yahoo media head who is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants">now co-president of Disney&#8217;s online division</a> with John Pleasants. Walker worked directly for Pitaro at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Walker&#8217;s job, said sources, will be to find a new direction for Disney.com, including adding original programming to the site, as well as more personalization for its users.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a big task for Walker, since Disney&#8217;s various Web efforts have a long and often rocky history, from its disastrous purchase of Infoseek in 1998 and efforts to create the Go.com portal to its savvy acquisition of several innovative kid-focused sites such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070807/disney-tries-to-waddle-its-way-to-digital-success">Club Penguin</a> in recent years.</p>
<p>Still, like many traditional media giants, Disney has never achieved the kind of digital success its spectacular brand has promised. The hiring of Pitaro and Pleasants by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101009/when-you-wish-upon-two-web-stars-ceo-bob-iger-talks-about-the-next-digital-direction-for-disney-2">CEO Bob Iger</a> was a sign that the company was going to make some big changes again.</p>
<p>BoomTown will query Iger about all this at the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110222/first-d9-speakers-iger-elop-apotheker-schmidt-darpa-head-and-more">ninth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference</a> this summer, where he&#8217;ll be interviewed onstage.</p>

<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/iPhone_stream_view.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3549" title="iPhone_stream_view" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/iPhone_stream_view-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a>The company has a not-too-shabby 35 million downloads to date of its <a href="http://www.cooliris.com/desktop/how-to-launch-and-use/">Wall product</a>, and is the default media gallery for Google&#8217;s Android. But now it&#8217;s venturing out into the oh-so-hot mobile media-sharing space (see: Instagram, Path, Picplz) with a photo app called <a href="http://www.liveshare.com/">LiveShare</a>&#8211;for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7 and the Web&#8211;that&#8217;s focused on groups.</p>
<p>Cooliris is also announcing today that it&#8217;s raised $9.6 million in Series C funding from investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers (which also <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110201/path-raises-8-65m-from-kleiner-index/">recently backed</a> Path), Deutsche Telekom’s T-Venture, DAG Ventures and the Westly Group. The five-year-old Palo Alto-based company has now raised a total of $28.6 million and employs 45 people.</p>
<p>Cooliris&#8217;s new LiveShare app helps users create photo streams for a particular event or group of people. Everyone who is invited to a stream can share photos, taken on a phone or elsewhere. Cooliris CEO Soujanya Bhumkar said that he thinks this &#8220;hyperpersonalized&#8221; approach fits with how people think about sharing: With respect to the four aspects of space, time, interests and relationships.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Android_Create_Stream.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3550" title="Android_Create_Stream" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Android_Create_Stream-168x300.jpg" alt="" width="168" height="300" /></a>What does that actually mean? While Path pushes users to identify their closest 50 friends for <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101114/path-the-social-app-thats-not-viral-by-design/">intimate sharing of personal photos and videos</a>, LiveShare gives users the option of sharing with whoever is appropriate for any context.</p>
<p>There are many alternatives to LiveShare, especially for Apple&#8217;s iOS platform. Will users want to install yet another app because of its particular set of nifty features and the flexibility of its sharing options? Perhaps not, but people seem to increasingly <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110101/the-social-webs-big-new-theme-for-2011-multiple-identities-for-everyone/">utilize tools to segment their online identities</a>, so LiveShare could become part of that trend.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also competition from the social Web giant Facebook, which provides a similar way to filter its Web site based on designated friend groups (though it has not disclosed how popular the product is with users). LiveShare, like many social apps, gets its friend network information from users plugging into Facebook.</p>
<p>But Cooliris isn&#8217;t starting from scratch with this product. For instance, the company is making use of its existing relationship with Google, so LiveShare will be incorporated into Android&#8217;s Gallery. But with nearly $30 million raised, expectations for LiveShare will be very, very high.</p>

You&#8217;d think eager buyers would be camping out in front of their local Apple Store. You&#8217;d think Verizon Stores would literally be overrun with  frustrated AT&#038;T iPhone users looking for relief.</p>
<p>But evidently that&#8217;s not the case.</p>
<p><a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110204/verizons-iphone-sales-so-amazing-they-cant-even-put-a-number-on-it/">Pre-orders were huge</a>, of course, cutting down the need for people to go out to a store, so early reports from around the country revealed a far more sedate response to a long-awaited event that ironically <a href="http://news.cnet.com/2300-13579_3-10006585-2.html?tag=mncol">seems pretty uneventful</a>. Fifteen minutes before the the Verizon iPhone went on sale, there were just eight people in line at Apple&#8217;s flagship store in New York, <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2011/02/10/technology/verizon_iphone/index.htm">according to CNNMoney</a>. At a lower-Manhattan Verizon store, 21 people queued up to buy the iPhone.</p>
<p>The scene was <a href="http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/02/10/verizon.iphone.gets.mixed.queues/">largely the same around the country</a>, according to other reports: <a href="http://www.gainesville.com/article/20110210/ARTICLES/110219974/-1/news?Title=Many-brave-the-rain-in-Gainesville-for-Verizon-iPhone-release">20 folks at a Gainesville Verizon Store</a>, <a href="http://www.myplainview.com/news/article_36c33592-3527-11e0-9977-001cc4c03286.html">10 at another in Plainview</a>, <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/business/115717144.html">a dozen in Milwaukee</a>, <a href="http://journalstar.com/news/local/article_7642f025-3636-54cc-b25f-1de2d63f29a5.html">a &#8220;few dozen&#8221; in Lincoln, Neb.,</a>. And before you the blame cold temperatures for the modest turnout, consider this:  The line in front of Apple&#8217;s Stockton Street flagship store in San Francisco this morning was just two people long. <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-20031276-266.html#ixzz1DZCURDYS">Said News.com&#8217;s Marguerite Reardon</a>, &#8220;Upon arriving here about five minutes (before the 7 a.m. opening of the store), there were literally more Apple Store employees, police officers and reporters&#8211;each&#8211;than people in line to buy iPhones.&#8221;</p>
<p>So, a pretty staid turnout for a device that&#8217;s generated such monomaniacal interest for so long. That said, it&#8217;s important to remember that Verizon isn&#8217;t launching the iPhone into a market with a vast untapped demand for it. In reality, most folks who absolutely had to have an iPhone bought one from AT&#038;T. And those who refused to leave Verizon to do so likely pre-ordered one last week. In the end, the lines (or lack thereof) we&#8217;re seeing today have very little to do with how big a seller the iPhone will be for Verizon (and for proof of that, one need only look to foreign markets with multiple iPhone carriers).  Sales estimates vary pretty widely, but <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110111/analysts-go-out-on-limb-predict-verizon-iphone-will-be-big-for-apple/">many suggest Apple will sell between 9 million and 13 million iPhones through Verizon this year</a>&#8211;a big boost no matter how you look at it. The big lines will return with the debut of iPhone 5.</p>

<p>In a bold and definitive move, AOL is paying $315 million, mostly in cash, to buy the Huffington Post, one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent news and opinion sites.</p>
<p>As part of the deal, Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington (pictured here)&#8211;who was derided by some when she co-founded the left-leaning site in 2005 with investor and well-known communications exec Kenneth Lerer&#8211;will become president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post Media Group within AOL.</p>
<p>The deal was signed late this afternoon, and the board of directors of each company and shareholders of the privately held Huffington Post have approved the transaction.</p>
<p>In an exclusive video interview BoomTown conducted earlier today in Dallas, just before Super Bowl XLV, both Armstrong and Huffington were jovial that the whirlwind deal, begun in November, actually worked out so quickly.</p>
<p>Perhaps giddy, they hit upon a common motto:</p>
<p>&#8220;One plus one equals 11.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Get it? </em> One and one next to each other is the number 11!</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s move on, shall we?</p>
<p>AOL said it is expected to close in the late-first or early-second quarter of 2011.</p>
<p>Once culminated, it will put Huffington in charge of all AOL content and other properties, including well-known names such as Engadget, Moviefone, MapQuest and TechCrunch.</p>
<p>She said she plans to move to New York from Los Angeles, although she will also maintain her longtime Brentwood home there.</p>
<p>And content for all these sites will be integrated deeply into the Huffington Post, giving it a huge new infusion of editorial material.</p>
<p>More to the point, the flashy acquisition&#8211;which essentially came together in less than two weeks in January&#8211;will become the linchpin of AOL CEO Tim Armstrong&#8217;s aggressive, if risky, strategy to focus the long-troubled company as a content and advertising powerhouse.</p>
<p>For AOL, the deal gives it a popular branded site that is very good at generating lots of page views and impressions very efficiently&#8211;which is the company&#8217;s whole thrust these days.</p>
<p>That means lots more ad inventory to sell and an injection of content talent, giving AOL the scale it desperately needs.</p>
<p>The move also obviously gives AOL a much-needed editorial identity and cohesion, which it doesn&#8217;t really have.</p>
<p>In fact, many think AOL needs a rallying point to bring clarity to its hodgepodge of recent acquisitions that all center on the notion that a strong company has yet to emerge in the premium content space.</p>

<p>While it all makes for a riveting narrative by the charming Armstrong, AOL still has not delivered the business turnaround promised after its spinoff from Time Warner in 2009.</p>
<p>Wall Street, which has given Armstrong a lot of rope, has become more impatient of late to see results&#8211;especially more robust increases in its display advertising business, as its access business dies off&#8211;after AOL spun off from Time Warner in 2009.</p>
<p>In its quarterly report last week, AOL reported earnings of 61 cents a share on revenue of $596 million.</p>
<p>But, as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110202/aols-ad-turnaround-still-isnt-here-yet/">MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka</a> wrote:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The bigger picture is that Armstrong&#8217;s turnaround is still in progress. Ad revenue was down 29 percent in the last quarter, although that number is worse than it looks. A big chunk of the decline comes from moves AOL has intentionally made that will cut revenue in the short run in return for more profitable sales down the road.</p>
<p>A more representative data set for Armstrong are his display ad sales, which are down 14 percent overall and eight percent in the U.S..</p>
<p>The bad news is that the rest of the Web ad industry is well into rebound mode; the good news is that AOL has trained Wall Street to expect numbers like these. If you&#8217;re waiting to see positive sales numbers, Armstrong said during AOL’s earnings call this morning, wait until the second half of this year.</p></blockquote>
<p>In any case, the move is a good one for the Huffington Post since it will vault it to the next level of growth.</p>
<p>Other companies, such as Yahoo and NBC Universal, had looked at the company as a purchase target, and many expected it to eventually sell out to a larger company.</p>
<p>Sources close to the Huffington Post said that that outcome seemed the most likely, and the recent expansion of the site and its audience made it a good time to do a deal now.</p>
<p>Talks with Yahoo last year went nowhere, sources said, but Armstrong was not as slow to act.</p>
<p>Indeed, the actual deal happened quickly, said Armstrong and Huffington in a video interview with BoomTown earlier today (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/aols-tim-armstrong-and-huffpos-arianna-huffington-talk-about-deal-touchdown-from-super-bowl/">which you can see here</a>).</p>
<p>The pair started talking in early November of last year at the Quadrangle Conference in New York and continued their discussions through the holidays.</p>
<p>Armstrong made the official offer to Huffington by phone in January, while she was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and he was snowed in in New York.</p>
<p>Five time multiple to the Huffington Post&#8217;s upward of $60 million in expected revenue for the coming year, and nearly 10 times the $31 million for 2010, the offer was accepted quickly.</p>
<p>AOL used cash for $300 million of the purchase and $15 million in stock for the rest.</p>
<p>&#8220;The idea of turning a fire hose of traffic onto our content made enormous sense,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;Everything is changing so fast, it seemed like the time was right.&#8221;</p>
<p>An IPO was also considered for the Huffington Post, sources said. But since the site only recently moved into profitability&#8211;although barely&#8211;such an event would have been farther out.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s despite the fact that the Huffington Post has seen fast-growing traffic and influence, spurred in part by Huffington&#8217;s larger-than-life persona in both the mainstream media and blogosphere.</p>
<p>The wide-ranging site&#8211;which has added a number of content areas in recent years beyond its flagship political offering&#8211;currently has almost 26 million unique monthly visitors, according to recent stats, moving in close range to established news organizations such as the New York Times.</p>
<p>That kind of success seemed unlikely when the Huffington Post launched on May 9, 2005, positioning itself as as a liberal counterweight to the popular right-leaning Drudge Report.</p>
<p>But the Huffington Post&#8217;s heady mix of celebrity bloggers, personality and voice, as well as aggressive curation of links from other sites, quickly caught on.</p>
<p>To fund its efforts, the New York-based online media company has raised $37 million from angel investors such as Lerer&#8211;the largest individual shareholder, followed closely by Huffington&#8211;and venture firms such as Greycroft Partners, Softbank Capital and Oak Investment Partners.</p>
<p>The growth has not been without controversy around issues such as lack of payments to bloggers who contribute and accusations that the site uses too much content from other Web sources when linking.</p>
<p>And Huffington herself has also been a lightning rod, which has been both positive and negative for the site.</p>
<p>But, there is no question she is one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent players, along with writing books, appearing on television frequently and being a fixture at high-profile events in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>That includes a never-ending panoply of parties that feature a potent mix of movie stars, corporate poo-bahs, glad-handing politicians and lots of journalists from all over the media.</p>
<p>In fact, full disclosure, I was at one of those parties this past weekend for actor Colin Firth and others involved in the making of the Oscar-nominated film &#8220;The King&#8217;s Speech.&#8221; (Apropos of nothing, actor Helena Bonham Carter is as smart as you would expect, but much more delicate.)</p>
<p>As part of the AOL deal, CEO Eric Hippeau&#8211;who has been integral to professionalizing the business and will be joining Lerer Ventures&#8211;and Chief Revenue Officer Greg Coleman will leave the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>Ironically, Coleman was replaced by Armstrong as head of ad sales at AOL after he took over as CEO. Coleman got a big payout and will now apparently get another.</p>
<p>But the rest of the 200 Huffington Post employees are moving over to AOL with Huffington, who Armstrong hopes will be the company&#8217;s ace in the content hole going forward.</p>
<p>There are likely to be changes to come too at AOL, within weeks, especially in its content-side management and site staffs.</p>
<p>AOL provided some quotes in support of the deal from prominent Internet figures who know Huffington well.</p>
<p>&#8220;Arianna is one of the preeminent authors and editors of our time, and Tim has a remarkable track record of business success,&#8221; said Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. &#8220;Bringing them together creates tremendous potential for AOL.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said:</p>
<p>&#8220;Editorial vision and leadership are essential in order to transmute our shared cacophony of voices into a valuable dialogue. Arianna&#8217;s expertise, empathy, and entrepreneurial enthusiasm forms a kind of alchemy turning mere words and phrases into powerful expressions of humanity.&#8221;</p>

<p>AOL has agreed to purchase The Huffington Post for $315 million, approximately $300 million of which will be paid in cash funded from cash on hand. The Huffington Post is privately owned by its two cofounders, as well as a group of investors. The proposed transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of government approvals. The boards of directors of each company and shareholders of The Huffington Post have approved the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the late first- or early second-quarter 2011.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mobilized is trudging through the snow in Beantown Thursday to hear Research In Motion talk about its plans for the enterprise. RIM is set to talk about why businesses should bet on both the BlackBerry and the forthcoming PlayBook tablet.</p>

<p>The event, at the Marriott Copley Place downtown, is just getting under way. I won&#8217;t bore you with every detail, but will post whenever things get interesting.</p>

<p><strong>Update, 10:17 am ET:</strong> The intro is still going on. RIM Vice President Alec Taylor is talking about the Cuban Missile Crisis for some reason. However, RIM was nice enough to pass out slides for the whole day. Here are some of the highlights:</p>
<p><strong>BlackBerry Mobile Voice System</strong><br />
Launching in early 2011, this is an update to RIM&#8217;s effort to unify the desk and mobile phone, offering a single identity, voiceover Wi-Fi calling, a single voicemail box, dialing office extensions and more. RIM says the new version will support more types of business phone systems.</p>
<p>Other features coming later this year include automatic hand-off from Wi-Fi to mobile networks, a &#8220;move call from desk&#8221; feature and more. </p>
<p><strong>BlackBerry Balance</strong><br />
A new effort to support mixing personal and corporate data on the BlackBerry. RIM is adding features such as the ability for IT to choose to wipe only corporate information from a device or to limit users from cutting work data and pasting it into a personal application or email. Other features include warnings when sending emails or calendar invites outside of the organization, the ability to encrypt media cards and options for preventing access to work data by third-party applications.</p>
<p><strong>BlackBerry client for Microsoft SharePoint</strong><br />
Launching in early 2011, this will bring data from Microsoft&#8217;s portal software directly to BlackBerry handhelds. It will work with both the 2007 and 2010 versions of SharePoint and integrates into a number of BlackBerry programs, including E-mail, calendar, Documents To Go and the browser.</p>
<p><strong>PlayBook</strong><br />
As for the forthcoming tablet, RIM says it will ship with 1GB of memory, have 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of flash memory, include a 3-megapixel front-facing and 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and have micro USB and Micro HDMI ports. (I can&#8217;t remember if they have said all of that before.) The slides say only that it will ship this quarter and will be &#8220;competitively priced,&#8221; reiterating past company positioning.</p>
<p>According to the slides, the company also plans to talk about cloud-based device management and changes to allow one BlackBerry server to support multiple corporations.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am ET:</strong> The Cuban Missile Crisis is apparently over, and VP Pete Devenyi is now outlining the company&#8217;s business product road map and making the pitch for its strategy.</p>
<p>“We really do have a great story,&#8221; he says, noting that the enterprise is different from the “arms race” of the consumer market.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just about the number of apps in App world,&#8221; he says, noting that businesses can and are building programs just for use within the corporation. Some businesses, he says, have hundreds of internal apps, none of which show up in the public storefront. BlackBerry, he says, also allows businesses better control than rivals over what programs are on a worker&#8217;s device. For example, Devenyi says, when workers change groups within a company, the programs they have access to can be updated automatically with programs deleted and added from their devices.</p>
<p>“That kind of power is power that no one else has,&#8221; he says. &#8220;We don’t read about that much.”</p>
<p><strong>10:43 am:</strong> In addition to both the paid BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the slimmed-down free &#8220;Express&#8221; version of the server, RIM plans to launch an email system aimed directly at small-to-midsize businesses&#8211;MDaemon Messaging Server, BlackBerry Edition. The idea is to give smaller businesses a full email server that has full BlackBerry support. The product stems from an acquisition RIM made a year or two ago and offers what RIM says are features similar to Microsoft&#8217;s Exchange Server but at a fraction of the price.</p>
<p>The company is also launching &#8220;very, very soon&#8221; a modest update to its flagship server product, BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.3. It will add more support for employee-owned devices (including the BlackBerry Balance feature described earlier), support for encrypted attachments and certification for Microsoft&#8217;s Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and the latest version, known as Lync 2010. </p>
<p><strong>11:18 am:</strong> RIM is launching yet another server this year, known as the BlackBerry Enterprise Application Middleware (BEAM). BEAM, which companies would have to buy in addition to their BlackBerry email server, aims to streamline enterprise content for use on a BlackBerry. &#8216;What that results in is a much more efficient application than you would otherwise have,&#8221; Devenyi says. It&#8217;s in beta now, he adds.</p>
<p><strong>11:25 am:</strong> BlackBerry is launching its equivalent of Find My Phone, known as BlackBerry Protect, which will allow individuals to remotely wipe or post a message if a device is lost. Protect will launch later this year, Devenyi says.</p>
<p>Finally, the company is talking about a number of changes it is making to the core BlackBerry Enterprise Server so that it can run via the cloud. Launching later this year, RIM will have the ability for its server product to be remotely hosted and support more than one business. It&#8217;s not clear yet if this will be RIM offering BlackBerry as a cloud-based service or if this is a product for hosting partners, though it sounds more like the latter.</p>
<p><strong>11:32 am:</strong> Devenyi told Mobilized that the company is just showing the architectural changes it is making, not saying how it will bring the cloud-based capabilities to market. &#8220;We&#8217;re still working through a number of those details ourselves.&#8221; Devenyi said. &#8220;It could be both, but we are not announcing.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:42 am:</strong> On to the PlayBook finally. Senior Product manager Ryan Bidan gives the spiel. He says there is a lot that the company isn&#8217;t ready to share. Addressing <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110113/rim-dont-worry-about-playbooks-battery-life/">concerns around battery life</a>, Bidan notes the PlayBook has a 5300-miliamp battery, but doesn&#8217;t give specifics on how much battery life that will translate to.</p>
<p>&#8220;We’ll have good battery life,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Don’t worry about the battery life.&#8221;</p>
<p>Other details:<br />
Software updates will be pushed down to the device on an ongoing basis. There will be a version of App World on the device for downloading developer-created programs.</p>
<p>And with that, the formal part of the event is over.</p>

First, it told us <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110111/analysts-go-out-on-limb-predict-verizon-iphone-will-be-big-for-apple/">2011 will be a big year for the iPhone</a>.  Now, it&#8217;s claiming Verizon will put some marketing muscle behind the device.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our checks with industry sources indicate that Verizon will put heavy promotion behind the iPhone, likely ahead of its other platforms including Android,&#8221; Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu says.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d say that&#8217;s a safe bet, given the amount of effort that Verizon put into the deal and the obviously high expectations for it. Indeed, as Wu himself notes, the carrier is already touting the iPhone 4 as a flagship product on its Web site. And it&#8217;s given it a snappy little tagline that&#8217;s well suited for an (inevitable) ad campaign: &#8220;The phone that changed everything. Coming to America&#8217;s most reliable network.&#8221;</p>

<p>Andrus&#8211;who mostly worked at MySpace under the tenure of co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe and President and co-founder Tom Anderson&#8211;left the troubled social networking site last year.</p>
<p>He had been doing some consulting for Rhapsody and had considered working there too. After deciding against it, since he lives in the Los Angeles area, he said he was asked to join the board.</p>
<p>&#8220;I liked what I saw,&#8221; said Andrus in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;Rhapsody is really ready to blossom and poised for some real growth.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Seattle-based Rhapsody <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100209/viacom-real-networks-spin-off-rhapsody-music-service">spun off from RealNetworks earlier this month</a> and has plunged into efforts to expand its offerings and become profitable.</p>
<p>These include a price cut for its subscription to $9.99 from $15 and aggressive mobile efforts, such as a Wi-Fi app for Google (GOOG) Android smartphones.</p>
<p>RealNetworks owned 51 percent of the Rhapsody, and Viacom&#8217;s MTV Networks the remainder. Restructuring gave both companies a 47.5 percent share. The rest is<br />
allocated to the employee pool and outside investors, including Universal Music Group.</p>

<p>For a new company, Rhapsody is one of the oldest in the music space, founded in 2001 by Listen.com.</p>
<p>Listen.com was bought by RealNetworks in 2003, and Rhapsody became its flagship brand as a music service offering.</p>
<p>But Rhapsody quickly lost ground to savvier competitors like Apple (AAPL) and its innovative iTunes service.</p>
<p>Rhapsody, along with Best Buy&#8217;s (BBY) Napster, has sold music via monthly subscription, as opposed to Apple’s (AAPL) a la carte download offering.</p>
<p>But Rhapsody has not been able to gain much traction, despite years of effort.</p>
<p>RealNetworks and Viacom&#8217;s MTV created a joint venture in 2007 to try to goose it, which did not work either, before the recent formation of the privately held independent company.</p>
<p> Currently, hotter services, such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090922/is-spotify-spot-on-co-founder-daniel-ek-talks-about-the-hot-online-music-start-up">Spotify</a>, are getting more attention, but Andrus said Rhapsody can compete.</p>
<p>&#8220;The company has been through the storm and is ready to win,&#8221; he said.</p>

These stores were designed to &#8220;inspire and educate consumers to the benefits of mobility&#8221; and broaden the appeal of the Nokia brand but have apparently done neither, particularly in the North American market, which is among Nokia’s weakest.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no reason for Nokia to have the flagship stores&#8211;they cost too much compared to the value they create,&#8221; <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE5B85GQ20091210?type=technologyNews">Strand Consult analyst John Strand told Reuters</a>. &#8220;Flagship stores are important in fashion industry: Apple is fashion. Nokia is consumer electronics.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the end, isn&#8217;t the rent the company would have paid on these retail spaces better spent on, you know, developing a worthy rival to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone?</p>

Earlier this year, the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091019/new-york-times-to-sack-100-staffers/">Times announced that it would cut 100 positions</a> at its flagship newspaper, which would still leave it with a newsroom staff of more than 1,000 people.</p>
<p>(Thanks to a sharp-eyed reader&#8211;who has good reason to be sharp-eyed about this stuff&#8211;for noting that the freeze only affects management and not the rank and file.)</p>

(WPO) has reported steadily declining results for its newspaper business&#8211;just like every other newspaper publisher in the country. But in previous quarters, it was at least able to argue that its slide wasn&#8217;t as bad as the one the New York Times (NYT) was going through.</p>
<p>It can&#8217;t say that anymore.</p>
<p>The Post says revenue at its flagship paper was down 22 percent in the last quarter and that print ad revenue was down 33 percent. That&#8217;s worse than the declines of 13 percent and 21 percent it posted in the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090225/upside-at-the-washington-post-at-least-web-ads-didnt-disappear-last-quarter/">previous quarter</a>. And it&#8217;s lousier than the poor results the Times <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/more-pulitzers-less-money-new-york-times-ad-sales-down-27/">posted last month</a>, when it reported that overall ad revenue had dropped 27 percent.</p>
<p>The same holds for the Post&#8217;s online business: Even in the good old days, it wasn&#8217;t growing fast enough to counter the decline at the print business. But now, online is declining, too.</p>
<p>Web revenue was down eight percent, because the classifieds business has been decimated. Online display ads, at least, were up a meager three percent. But last quarter, display ads were up 10 percent and the overall business was still growing five percent.</p>
<p>As usual, the real difference between the Post and the Times isn&#8217;t their performance but their corporate structure: The Times is pure-play media business that&#8217;s now choking on debt, while the Post is an education company (Kaplan) that happens to own a newspaper, which makes all of these grim results much easier to bear.</p>

<p>BoomTown landed at New York&#8217;s JFK Airport this morning and, of course, could not resist visiting the flagship Apple (AAPL) store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on iPhone 3G Day.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s right! JesusPhone 2.0 is nigh!</p>
<p>(Well, <em>was</em> nigh, I guess, and apparently <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080711/ipocalypsenow/">unable to be activated due to system overload</a>.)</p>
<p>In any case, I did a particularly jumpy video of the doings at one of Apple&#8217;s most famous stores, as legions of New Yorkers waited in line for their cheaper, faster, prettier iPhone.</p>
<p>Added bonus: it includes an appearance at the end by my unimpressed-with-Steve-Jobs-worshipping-geeks mother, who goes by the name of&#8211;I am not kidding&#8211;<em>Lucky</em>.</p>
