Welcome to Mobilized, the latest All Things Digital blog devoted to all things mobile. Mobilized will cover the wireless world from cell phones to tablets, as well as the networks they run on (or drop calls on).

In other words, all the issues raised by having the tiny little machines with us at all times.

If you are reading this on your Apple iPhone, Amazon Kindle, BlackBerry from Research in Motion, Google Android or other non-PC device: Congratulations, you are already Mobilized.

But, if you are sitting in front of a laptop or desktop as you are reading this–you might be a little behind the times, although on the plus side, you don’t have to squint nearly as much.

And, even if you printed this article out, I am happy you took the time to read it (Hi, Dad!).

In any case, I am hoping to cut through the jargon and the hype, so that this will be a spot that both the early adopters and the merely curious will be able to find items of interest.

And whether you are a mobile geek or not, mobile technology is poised to reshape your life. Cell phones aren’t just mini-computers and tablets aren’t just notebooks with their keyboards cut off. These products are reshaping not just how we consume media, but also the ways we interact with each
other.

Let me take a moment to introduce myself.

For those that don’t know me, I spent the last decade at CNET, covering everything from Apple and Microsoft to ill-fated products from the Audrey to the Foleo.

While mobile hasn’t been my full-time beat, I have always been a device junkie. I owned a Windows CE 1.0 device and several of the first attempts to marry a phone with a Palm Pilot. Most recently, I have spent the past several years covering Microsoft full-time and recently did a three-part series on the birth of Windows Phone 7.

I am passionate about technology and telling the stories about the people making the products that are changing the way we live. I hope to find room to tell all kinds of different stories in these pages.

I plan to start things off with an interview I did last week in New York with Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci. I also had a chance to catch up there with multitouch pioneer Jeff Han, who is beginning to shift some of his work from giant touchscreens to mobile devices.

Meanwhile, next week is the inaugural D: Dive into Mobile conference. I’ll be providing lots of coverage, of course, including backstage interviews with many of the speakers.

We have had a lot of great moments onstage with all these tech and media players over the years, to be sure, with interviews ranging from the funny to the sublime to the truly disastrous.

But, like the digital industry and the innovation our conference focuses on, we also like to lean forward to try to figure out what the Next Big Thing is around the corner, whether it comes from Silicon Valley or not.

That’s why we’re kicking off our conference on May 26 with two of the founders of Twitter–Biz Stone and Evan Williams–who are riding high on tech’s latest hot thing, which might turn out to be either a rocket ship or a shooting star.

They’ll be followed up over the next two days by a plethora of interesting players, from the leaders of several major mobile companies to content execs hit hard by fast-moving digital forces to a new Internet leader like Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, who is trying to turn around one of the Web’s great icons from its more recent lackluster path.

And, as we always do, we will be featuring a spate of demos too, trying to see if we can unearth that next next thing.

In the past, the D stage has seen the debut of start-up products like Sling Media’s Slingbox, Aliph’s Jawbone and Pure Digital’s Flip, all of which have gone onto glory. And also some, like Palm’s Foleo, which did not.

While not everyone can attend D, our crack staff is committed to bringing all the action from this year’s conference to readers of the All Things Digital site via up-to-the-minute blogs, photos, videos, tweets, digs and more. We’ll also, as soon as we can, post the videos of each of the onstage sessions, in their entirety.

BoomTown did a video interview with Palm’s sugar daddy investor Roger McNamee at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, after the debut of its Pre smartphone.

Via Elevation Partners, McNamee has invested a total of $425 million in Palm, aimed at reviving the company that pioneered the smartphone market.

But Palm soon saw its business gobbled up by the BlackBerry from Research in Motion (RIMM) and the iPhone from Apple (AAPL). And, of course, there is the G1 phone from Google (GOOG) too, along with competition from Nokia (NOK) and many others.

And Palm is following the less-than-stellar last launch of the Foleo in 2007.

Thus, the company and the private equity firm have banked a lot on this revival, so McNamee was out in full force at CES in Las Vegas, talking up the Pre.

The Pre launch was indeed the highlight of the show, and also gave Palm’s moribund stock a boost.

And, indeed, the Pre does look pretty cool, with a sleek design and a new operating system, although the real proof will be when it debuts to consumers later this year.

In any case, here is the always hopped-up McNamee giving it his best for the Pre:

I’m going to use my $100 rebate I get from the I-had-to-have-it-before-my-brother iPhone to get one! And I’ll even have a dollar left over for a refreshing can of soda.

Hopefully, the Centro will do a little better than Palm’s Foleo, which was demoed at our D5 and was dumped before the launch.

And, as an added bonus, here is that Foleo demo video by Jeff Hawkins:

Hawkins showed off the device, pictured here, which was supposed to go on sale this summer for $499, at D5 for the first time. It was greeted with less than enthusiastic acclaim by the elite tech crowd. The problem: Too large and heavy for so few features.

You be the judge after you see the video, but our own live blogger John Paczkowski even suggested at the time that it might get the unfortunate moniker “Fooleo.”

Given that Palm will be taking a $10 million charge for Foleo’s cancellation, that prediction looks pretty accurate now.

By way of background, D: All Things Digital, the annual tech and media conference Walt Mossberg and I host, has been sold out with a long wait list every year we have put it on.

That has meant only a few hundred people can see the interviews and also demos we do live onstage with some of the tech and media industry’s most interesting and important players and products.

The lineups have included Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Jobs, as well as Eric Schmidt of Google, IAC’s Barry Diller, Meg Whitman of eBay, Cisco’s John Chambers and many others.

And we’ve demoed stuff like the Treo when it first came out, as well as digital toilets, Wi-Fi phones and much more.

We usually post the photos and videos of the interviews and demos six or more months after they take place on a separate conference site. This year, our Digital Daily’s John Paczkowski liveblogged and also posted video highlights from all of the sessions immediately on our newly launched site here.

Here’s the Foleo, R.I.P.:

I think it’s probably the most disappointing product I’ve seen in several years. To think that anyone would carry something with a 10-inch display at 2.5 pounds as an adjunct to a phone just doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Maybe the Foleo wasn’t Palm founder Jeff Hawkins’s “best idea ever.” This afternoon Palm said it is scrapping the Clio-esque “mobile companion” that it launched with great fanfare in late May. “In the course of the past several months, it has become clear that the right path for Palm is to offer a single, consistent user experience around this new platform design and a single focus for our platform development efforts,” Palm CEO Ed Colligan wrote in a post to Palm’s blog. “To that end, and after careful deliberation, I have decided to cancel the Foleo mobile companion product in its current configuration and focus all of our energies on delivering our next-generation platform and the first smart phones that will bring this platform to market.”

An astonishing turn of events, really. The $499 device was scheduled to ship in summer 2007. And Palm was insisting it was on track to do so as recently as Aug. 24. Apparently, the company decided it was better off taking a $10 million charge to earnings for canceling the Foleo than launching it in a market that has questioned its viability since the day it was announced. “I think Palm was wise enough to pull back when all the signs were indicating negative,” analyst Kort told IDG. “If they would have poured a lot of resources into this and failed, it could have dragged the company down pretty quickly.”

To keep you abreast of tech news while he’s away, we’re compiling a daily digest of 10 must-read tech stories. We’re calling it the Tech 10 and it appears below.

1. Getting to know you: Facebook is developing targeted ads based on the information that users of the social-networking site reveal about themselves. Quoting anonymous sources at the company, The Wall Street Journal says the advertising system is at an early, changeable stage, but Facebook hopes to launch a basic version late this fall.
2. It looks like Apple will turbocharge its iPods with the Mac OS. According to AppleInsider, the upgraded digital music players will debut at a media event next month and are part of the computer maker’s master plan to create devices around its legendary operating-system software.
3. Dude, where’s my YouTube? Initial response to ads overlaid on downloaded videos from the popular online site is overwhelmingly negative, Computerworld reports, noting that the comments on a YouTube feedback blog could be summarized by the one-word review of a user from Oro Valley, Ariz.: “Yuck.”
4. Hoping to shore up anemic sales of its PlayStation consoles in the face of competition from Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony said it will market a recording-transfer device (pictured here) in Europe enabling users to record TV programs on their PlayStation 3 video-game consoles for transfer to the PlayStation Portable. According to the Associated Press, the new gadget, dubbed PlayTV, will give game consumers an additional function for their PlayStations beyond playing video games.
5. Too hot to handle? Microsoft announced that it’s offering a free retrofit to the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel after reports from a number of users that smoke issued from the device when used on AC/DC power, according to PC World. The retrofit comes six weeks after it extended the Xbox warranty for “flashing lights of death” failures–and took an earnings hit of $1.15 billion for the anticipated repair bill.
6. Paper trail, indeed. Many iPhone customers are irked over the book-sized bills they are getting from wireless provider AT&T, reports the New York Times. The bills itemize all phone calls, as well as every text message and online data transfer. In response, AT&T announced that beginning Sept. 28, customers would get summarized bills removing the wireless detail.
7. Microsoft and Nokia won’t sit back and watch while the iPhone marches through Europe, apparently. The companies are joining forces to put Windows Live services on selected Nokia S60 handhelds, reports IDG News Service. Customers in 9 countries in Europe and two in the Middle East will be first to get the services, including Hotmail and Live Messenger. A Microsoft spokesman couldn’t say when the functions would be available for cellphones in the United States, however.
8. Speaking of teaming up, MTV and MySpace are collaborating on a series of one-on-one dialogues with the major Democratic and Republican presidential candidates. CNNMoney.com reports that the hourlong events will be streamed live on MTV.com and MySpaceTV throughout the fall on college campuses.
9. Palm’s Foleo computer, first exhibited at this year’s D Conference, is having trouble leaving the gate, writes Tech Trader Daily, quoting a Deutsche Bank analyst who disclosed that the debut in stores of the stripped-down laptop scheduled for this week “was delayed after software bugs were detected. … Palm now expects the device will ship in late September/early October.”
10. Playboy Enterprises is, uh, unveiling Playboy U, a social-networking site targeted exclusively at college students. The move online by the granddaddy of the skin rags, says the Associated Press, is an attempt to capitalize on the Playboy brand as the 54-year-old magazine continues to lose money and readers. The site is modeled after Facebook and MySpace, with users allowed to “friend” other college students. Although there will be no nudie shots, users will be able to discourse on such topics as how many sex partners they’ve had or what they think of penis enlargement.

Roger McNamee is very bullish on the iPhone. “It’s the most exciting thing in years,” said the longtime Silicon Valley investor. “With Apple’s identity, I think it will be spectacularly successful.”

This, of course, is an interesting product for McNamee to cheer for. Because last week, Elevation Partners, the high-profile private-equity firm that counts McNamee and also U2 singer Bono among its partners, sunk $325 million of its $1.9 billion fund to buy one-quarter of Palm. The maker of the Treo smart phone, of course, could take a big hit if the iPhone lives up to its hype and dominates the market for high-end, heavily featured mobile devices.

Still, McNamee, whom I interviewed here a few weeks ago, keeps reeling off a bunch of non-Palm smart phones he loves–he tries all of them and often wears several in high-tech style (not!) on his belt.

“I loved the BlackBerry Pearl, and Motorola and Samsung have done some cool stuff and I liked a lot of the features on Helio’s new Ocean,” he said. “And that iPhone will probably be a huge hit does not bother me at all, because this is not a zero-sum game.”

McNamee’s theory is simple–although only a small percentage of all phones sold are smart phones, he expects that to eventually be 100%, because, he posits, “in the end, what matters is what you carry on your body.”

So, even if Palm, which is a small player compared to competitors like Nokia and BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion, comes in third or fourth, that, said McNamee, is “not so bad.”

Not that he expects that kind of also-run status for Elevation’s investment. So to help buoy Palm, along with the big pile of cash, he will also join the board and has brought in two former Apple executives, too–former CFO Fred Anderson and former hardware head (think iPod) Jon Rubinstein.

Anderson is also a partner at Elevation and Rubinstein will serve as executive chairman and also run product development at Palm.

“We offer committed value insight and want to be a partner to management and shareholders, but, most of all, we want to help foster a culture of radical innovation,” said McNamee. “I am a huge believer that you have to be able to experiment to be able to innovate and you even need permission to do so.”

The $325 million buys a lot of permission, of course, and was, said McNamee, an unexpected opportunity. The deal was hatched about seven months ago, when McNamee was called by Palm CEO Ed Colligan, who was seeking good advice about Palm’s options.

While McNamee admits he was not a regular user of Palm products, although he did try them out, he was impressed by Palm’s years of large accomplishments compared to its size.

Nonetheless, the company has been under a lot of pressure to perform better and also do something to lift its lagging stock price. With a huge hoard of cash and even the possibility of being sold to a bigger player, Palm was receptive when McNamee proposed a different tack.

Under terms of the new restructuring deal, still to be approved, Palm’s existing shareholders will get almost $1 billion in cash (the money from Elevation, some new debt and cash from Palm’s kitty) to drop their stake to 75%.

What McNamee said he is buying is a company great at both software and also hardware, which he thinks need to become even more tightly integrated to make products seamless.

“All the really successful products are like that, because someone has to take responsibility for the whole thing,” said McNamee. “And product change has to be the rule rather than the exception… with the goal, of course, to have an incredible device everyone wants to own.”

That might be the goal, but Palm’s latest device, unveiled at D5 last week by Palm’s co-founder and top product guru Jeff Hawkins, called the Foleo, was not well received.

The “phone companion”–which sounded naughty to me when I heard it described thus–was thought by many I spoke with to be too large and not feature-rich enough to be useful.

McNamee understands this, but said Foleo was only a starting point. “It is a good thing for a company to try new form factors, and Foleo is an excellent first step,” he said, even though he admitted the device probably does not represent a very big market.

But he liked the effort involved in its conception.

“Innovation is not a matter of always hitting a bulls-eye on the first shot,” he said. “So I hope we’re there to help Palm be able to keep trying.”

There is a third business that I’ve been working on but I’m not going to tell you what it is. It’s in mobile computing. It’s something different and it’s in its early stage. We have three businesses at PalmOne. One you don’t even know about, which is just a child. Another is the teenager and the other one is the mature 45-year-old. … Not really. I’ll give you a couple of clues. I always think of mobile computing as personal computing. This long-term vision has led us through everything–first the organizers and now through the smart-phone space. It’s like everything a personal computer is. Continue down that path. What are the implications of a world where everyone has a super high-speed Internet connection in their pocket and many gigabytes of storage, superfast processors, audio, visual and multimedia? What are the consequences of that? How will that change computing when you have all that stuff available to you all the time? I try to think into the future.”

And here, nearly two years later, is the future to which Hawkins referred, the Palm Foleo (critics will inevitably dub it the “Fooleo”). Palm bills this as the mobile companion to its Treo smart phone, noting its 10-inch screen and full-size keyboard for reading and editing email and other documents received on a cellphone.

The Foleo also acts independently as a computer, with a Linux-based operating system for creating new applications. In partnership with DataViz and Opera Software, Palm hopes to show how easily new technology and applications can be added to the Foleo. It has Web search and browsing capabilities via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, along with editing capabilities for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus a PDF viewer. The device has an “instant-on” feature, meaning users push a button and the Foleo is ready, without a boot-up period. It weighs 2.5 pounds.

The mobile-phone companion will be available in the U.S. this summer. Palm expects the price to be $499, after an introductory $100 rebate.

• 10:35 a.m.: Some background on the Foleo from creator Jeff Hawkins: “If the smart phone is a truly capable computer and billions of people have them, some of them are going to need a larger display. Smart-phone screens are just too small. People need a mobile companion, a device that extends their smart phones.”
• If you are a heavy smart-phone user, Hawkins says, Foleo makes your life a lot easier. You charge it overnight and use it all day long (like a Newton!)
• No hard drive. Semiconductor based.
• 10:40 a.m.: No cramped keyboards here. Full-sized only. Hawkins says it’s the smallest computer ever made with a full-sized keyboard.
• 10:45 a.m.: True on/off. No boot-up time. No sleep. “Just like the Clapper,” says Walt.
• Side note: Hawkins is extraordinarily tall. He looks likes Manute Bol next to Walt and Kara.
• Future iteration of the device will allow email over Wi-Fi.
• 10:50 a.m.: Uh-oh. Technical problems. Hey, I know, let’s talk about the scroll wheel for a while!
• Hawkins: “Once you’ve used Foleo’s scroll wheel and you move to another laptop, your thumbs will be looking for it.”
• 10:55 a.m.: How does the device handle email attachments? Pretty well, apparently. Native formating retained. All native. Documents and spreadsheets can be created from scratch. Device can display PDFs and Powerpoint docs, but it cannot edit them.
• Linux OS allows new applications to be developed quickly.
• Applications run full-size all the time. Essentially, it’s a modal device. There’s no task bar, and you switch between applications via the keyboard.
• 11 a.m.: Device runs Opera browser. Doesn’t do video, though. Will it ever? Hawkins says it will someday, it just doesn’t do it well enough right now.
• Foleo doesn’t have a cellphone radio, so it’s not carrier dependent.
• Foleo will support Palm and Windows Mobile. Hawkins wants it to support RIM and iPhone as well, but hasn’t inked the deals necessary to do that yet.

But how similar is this to Vadem’s ill-fated Clio? Hopefully, it won’t end up mimicking the legendary undoing of this defunct device.
