<p>Also in the interview, Whitman concedes that if iPads count as PCs, as the research firm <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111122/apple-nearing-no-1-in-pc-sales/">Canalys has argued</a>, then Apple will likely overtake HP as the world&#8217;s top vendor of PCs. But she says HP would try to retake the crown in 2013.</p>
<p>Whitman is in Europe for an HP corporate event in Vienna, at which HP made some big announcements on the enterprise IT front, specifically around a new concept it calls &#8220;<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111129/hp-wants-to-optimize-your-information-whatever-that-means/">information optimization</a>.&#8221;</p>

<p>When we last heard from Whitman on the subject of webOS, she admitted she wasn&#8217;t sure what to do. On Nov. 8, she told an all-hands meeting of HP&#8217;s webOS team that she was still <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/hp-has-meeting-to-say-it-still-doesnt-know-what-to-do-with-webos/">mulling over the situation</a>.</p>
<p>Having failed to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110816/ouchpad-best-buy-sitting-on-a-pile-of-unsold-hp-tablets/">get any traction</a> in hardware sales, HP killed the TouchPad and all the other webOS-running hardware on Aug. 18. Yet in killing it, HP managed to make its TouchPad device <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111031/hps-touchpad-the-tablet-that-refused-to-die/">suddenly popular</a> &#8212; at a reduced price. </p>
<p>Whatever the result, the whole $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm &#8212; which created webOS &#8212; has turned out be a bit of a mess for HP. On its earnings call last week, the company said that it is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111121/double-facepalm-hp-blew-3-3-billion-on-webos/">writing off $1.66 billion</a> related to the winding down of the webOS business. <p>Akamai president David Kenny has stepped down after a year on the job &#8212; and in the midst of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/?s=david+kenny">Yahoo&#8217;s CEO search</a>, where his name has come up as a possible <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110907/yahoos-next-ceo-maybe-snoop-dogg-ya-digg/">replacement for fired CEO Carol Bartz</a>.</p>
<p>Kenny is also a Yahoo board member &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110204/exclusive-huffpos-eric-hippeau-stepping-down-from-yahoo-board-as-akamais-david-kenny-steps-in/">joining early last year</a> &#8212; and had quickly become one of the major forces in pushing for change at the company in the wake of the troubled Bartz regime.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://www.akamai.com/html/investor/quarterly_releases/2011/press_102611.html">statement</a> distributed along with Akamai&#8217;s Q3 earnings, Kenny said he wants to &#8220;to return to my first passion of pursuing emerging opportunities on the consumer Internet.&#8221; </p>
<p>You can decide for yourself whether Yahoo represents an &#8220;emerging&#8221; opportunity or something else.</p>
<p>Sources said the departure from the networking company was mutual, although there has been an increasing amount of tension over Kenny&#8217;s involvement on the Yahoo board, which has been working on a massive strategic review.</p>
<p>Kenny, who was the initial leader of the effort, stepped down from that board task and also recused himself from any involvement in the simultaneous search for a new CEO.</p>
<p>Whether he will get the job is not a done deal by any means. He is among several candidates Yahoo has been contemplating pursuing, after only recently <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111013/exlcusive-yahoo-hires-heidrick-struggles-for-ceo-search/">hiring Heidrick &#038; Struggles</a> for its executive search.</p>
<p>In fact, it&#8217;s not entirely clear Kenny wants to be CEO of Yahoo or if he would want to return to his roots at a consumer advertising agency. Another issue: He currently lives in Boston.</p>
<p>Before coming to Akamai, he was managing partner of VivaKi, the media and digital arm of marketing giant, Publicis Groupe. He came to the French concern after it bought relationship marketing services firm Digitas, which Kenny ran.</p>
<p>All that advertising experience is one of the reasons he is being looked at by Yahoo, which is contemplating doubling down in online advertising platforms and products if it does not sell.</p>
<p>Many assumed that Kenny&#8217;s move to the Web platform company meant that it would become more actively involved in Web media itself. But Akamai didn&#8217;t make any major moves or acquisitions during his tenure.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, back at Akamai, Kenny&#8217;s title will be assumed by CEO Paul Sagan, who had previously served as president as well.</p>

<p>In an event ahead of the G8 summit this week, France&#8217;s power brokers are hosting a new event&#8211;called <a href="http://www.eg8forum.com/programme_EN.html">e-G8</a> and with the motto, &#8220;Internet: Accelerating Growth&#8221;&#8211;that starts tomorrow in Paris.</p>
<p>Set to be held at the Tuileries Garden in the capital, the conference has been pushed and will be opened by French President Nicholas Sarkozy, who is also president of the G8.</p>
<p>Recently, Sarkozy has advocated the idea of a &#8220;civilized Internet&#8221;&#8211;a decidedly tin-eared concept, since the e-G8 event is chock full of often noisy and always disruption-loving U.S. Web stars.</p>
<p>That includes Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, the social networking site&#8217;s COO Sheryl Sandberg, eBay CEO John Donahoe, Groupon CEO and co-founder Andrew Mason, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt and Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor Sean Parker.</p>
<p>In fact, Mason and Zuckerberg have the two big keynote spots for the two-day event, putting the American point of view on the Internet&#8217;s future on front and center. </p>

<p>Today, after Demand Media <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110505/demand-media-beat-the-street-and-promises-to-cleans-up-its-act/">beat Wall Street expectations</a>, its execs got on the horn with investors to explain how it plans to beat the Panda.</p>
<p>That would be the beastly name for Google&#8217;s rejiggering of its search algorithm, in order to rid search results of poor quality content.</p>
<p>Along with many other sites, Demand has gotten smacked by its raging paw.</p>
<p>Still, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based <a href="http://ir.demandmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=215358&#038;p=irol-newsArticle&#038;ID=1560524&#038;highlight=">company reported</a> revenue of $79.5 million and six cents a share in adjusted net income.</p>
<p>Wall Street was expecting the company to report about $69.6 million in revenue for the three months, with four cents a share in adjusted profits.</p>
<p>On a GAAP basis, net loss per share was 13 cents compared to 94 cents a year ago.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the liveblog of the conference call:</p>
<p><strong>2 pm PT:</strong> Demand&#8217;s investor relations dude came on and I immediately tuned out until CEO Richard Rosenblatt got on the line to talk about the results.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/imgres3.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/imgres3.jpeg" alt="" title="imgres" width="274" height="184" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-43644" /></a></p>
<p>He was as perky as ever, launching right into the meat of the situation&#8211;how Demand was going to pretty up its offerings, such as a redesign of its flagship eHow site and its new editorial arrangement with another perky person, food lady Rachael Ray and the also perky fashionista/talk show lady Tyra Banks.</p>
<p>Gone will be user-generated content that Demand used to let people post at will on its eHow site that was, <em>well</em>, less than good.</p>
<p>As in, bad.</p>
<p>Instead, it&#8217;s &#8220;curation,&#8221; &#8220;editorial innovation&#8221; and feedback cycles.</p>
<p>We old-timers like to call that journalism and copyediting, complete with mean old editors who spiked said copy when it was crappy.</p>
<p>&#8220;Let me be clear,&#8221; said Rosenblatt, the Google changes did negatively impact Demand&#8217;s traffic. But Rosenblatt said the company dug into its content and has been improving it since.</p>
<p><strong>2:17 pm:</strong> Now it was CFO Charles Hillard reading the results themselves. I am sorry, Mr. Finance Guy, but I can read it myself, so this is always the time in earnings calls when I check out and spend my time improving <em>my</em> content.</p>
<p>So when I heard words such as &#8220;stock-based comp,&#8221; I moved on to fixing all the typos that a very nice reader alerted me to, since I was writing too quickly.</p>
<p>Then, I briefly considered writing a high-quality post for eHow on how to write earnings and fix typos at the same time. I am <em>that</em> good.</p>
<p><strong>2:30 pm:</strong> The CFO dude finished up and the Q&#038;A with analysts started.</p>

<p>Rosenblatt seemed calm, cool and collected.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think on this one, they did a very good job,&#8221; he said of Google&#8217;s search-fixing efforts, trying to soothe the savage beast. &#8220;We all continue to evolve.&#8221;</p>
<p>Which translated to: Google says jump and we say: &#8220;How high?&#8221;</p>
<p>Which is then followed by: &#8220;Please sir, can I have some more (traffic)?&#8221;</p>

<p>I suspect there is a new tactic afoot by Demand: Bore us into submission about the traffic devastation from Larry Page&#8217;s minions with endless questions about algo.</p>
<p>Finally, a question about mobile and international expansion. Apparently, Demand content is going to be translated into five different languages.</p>
<p>Yay! I am readying my version of &#8220;How to Boil Water&#8221; in French! (&#8220;Comment Faire Bouillir L&#8217;eau&#8221;!)</p>
<p>Mobile is going to be big too for Demand, which it is for everyone.</p>
<p>Then it was onto a question about improving content, including paying its writers more moolah, which would then eat into the Demand cheaper content business model.</p>

<p>I liked that question! I suddenly decided I was going to shift to a lugubrious post on the history of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maginot_Line">Maginot Line</a> in 132 parts!</p>
<p>Oops, Rosenblatt said the data has to show that the peeps want those longer pieces.</p>
<p>Back to the boiling water opus!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s on to some video questions and then back to search, as in diversifying away from relying on search to get traffic and premium prices for its advertising.</p>
<p>As in, how much are you going to cozy up to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg?</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s less about where traffic comes from and more about where they land,&#8221; said Rosenblatt, except you just know he sent a lovely floral bouquet plus a hefty selection of citrus to Zuckerberg&#8217;s new house in Silicon Valley right after Panda roared.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt deflected a lot of questions in this arena. &#8220;We still think that search is a fantastic way&#8221; to gain traffic, he said, making sure Google&#8217;s Page did not chomp off his hand as he courted his social networking nemesis at Facebook.</p>
<p>But as the old Kikuyu proverb goes: &#8220;When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.&#8221;</p>
<p>More likely, as Mary Chapin Carpenter sings: &#8220;Sometimes you&#8217;re the windshield. Sometimes you&#8217;re the bug.&#8221;</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see which is which for Demand in the quarters ahead.</p>

<p>The Beijing-based company has raised $20 million from DCM and Sequoia Capital China in its first round of venture funding. The capital will enable the company to expand its business offering brand-name clothes, accessories, makeup and home furnishings through time-sensitive online discounted offers.</p>
<p>The company has 1.5 million members across China and is one of a handful of start-ups taking the model popularized in the U.S. by companies such as Groupon Inc. and Gilt Groupe Inc., European companies like Spanish internet retailers BuyVip GmbH and Privalia Venta Directa S.L., or the French site Vente Privee, which is backed by Summit Partners LLC.</p>

<p>BoomTown likes the sassiness of SCVNGR, the location-based service that&#8217;s <em>not</em> Foursquare, including the rank enthusiasm of its founder, Seth Priebatsch, to do whatever it takes to stand out in the competitive space.</p>
<p>Today, it is by &#8220;leveraging the most comprehensive places database in the world&#8211;the Google Places API,&#8221; which will essentially take the start-up global.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s part of a lot of moves by the Cambridge, Mass.-based SCVNGR, which tries to go beyond simple check-ins by emphasizing the game aspect and posing real-world challenges for users to complete.</p>
<p>Recently, hunting for ways to keep pace in the fast-moving social location space, the start-up <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20101022/scvngr-ups-its-game-with-new-apps">released revamped versions</a> of its Apple iPhone and Google Android apps.</p>
<p>And, earlier this summer, SCVNGR was one of the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100827/resistance-is-futile-scvngr-integrates-with-facebook-places">first to integrate with Facebook Places</a>.</p>

<p>BoomTown was sitting front row center&#8211;better to scare Google Mobile Product Manager Hugo Barra&#8211;at the Silicon Valley search giant&#8217;s press event in San Francisco this morning.</p>
<p>Google (GOOG) called together a group of reporters to discuss some &#8220;cool new features&#8221; for its Android operating system.</p>
<p>While many have been expectantly waiting for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100810/what-new-features-will-google-reveal-at-mobile-event-thursday-it-should-be-integrated-video-calling/">Google to announce a video-calling offering</a>, to match the Apple (AAPL) FaceTime service, that was not to be here.</p>
<p>Instead, it was a low-key rollout of a few whiz-bang features to ooh and ahh at.</p>
<p>Happily, Google provided unusually delicious donuts, which was my entire reason for coming, because donuts are the pastry to the gods.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s get to it:</p>
<p><strong>10:05 am PT:</strong> PR dude Mike Nelson introed Barra, who said there will be two new features announced.</p>
<p>Ooh <em>and</em> Ahh.</p>
<p>First though, we were forced to endure yet another lecture on how important mobile is and where the future is headed that comes from every single company that throws a mobile event.</p>
<p>Mobile is the big show now?</p>
<p>Really? We had <em>no</em> idea this cell phone thing was going to take off! Thanks, Professor Barra!</p>
<p>Barra pressed on with lots of talk about MIPS (millions of instructions per second, which you should care less about, but is important).</p>
<p>Barra said that innovative smartphones were becoming &#8220;super-computers in your pocket.&#8221;</p>
<p>Again, master of the obvious!</p>
<p>I obviously needed to have a bite of my lovely sprinkle-laden donut to gain some balance.</p>
<p><strong>10:12 am:</strong> Barra moved onto voice recognition. He asked the phone movie times in Palo Alto, Calif. and how high the Empire State Building, results which were promptly delivered.</p>
<p>(When my kid asked me on a trip to New York, I just said it was a <em>badillion</em> feet high, which also worked as an answer.)</p>
<p>But such technology is cool, for sure.</p>
<p>But Barra upped the ante by speaking four languages&#8211;Spanish, French, Italian and Japanese&#8211;to get results. It worked! Get this guy on &#8220;The Amazing Race&#8221; pronto!</p>
<p>Now, tricks over, it was onto the first product announcement!</p>
<p>And, drum roll&#8230;it was a new feature that Google is a calling &#8220;Voice Actions&#8221; in Voice Search, available today for Android 2.2 Froyo devices.</p>
<p>This sounded like a band name from the 1980s.</p>
<p>Instead, it is the ability to speak into the phone and have it instantly do things, such as sending text messages, automatic dialing and mapping and more, all via speech commands in English.</p>
<p>Speech recognition, natural language processing and semantic Web search&#8211;you could kind of do this before on Android, but it was neither seamless nor automatic, said Barra.</p>
<p>He did not say, but Voice Actions is an awful lot like <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100428/apple-snags-siri">Siri, the mobile app assistant start-up</a> that Apple bought recently.</p>
<p>But there were more on Voice Actions, according to the adorkable demo dude Mike LeBeau, a baker&#8217;s dozen (13!) of actions, and there will be more.</p>
<p>He spoke into the phone a request to &#8220;Listen to the Decembrists.&#8221; Presto (and also props for the hip musical choice)!</p>
<p>Then, LeBeau spoke an email about some scuba diving trip. Presto!</p>
<p>But then he added a smiley face! Unfortunate and decidedly unhip, but presto!</p>
<p>After that, LeBeau kept showing off, setting the alarm clock, going to Wikipedia, doing a search for art galleries in Amsterdam.</p>
<p><strong>10:28 am:</strong> Now for product announcement #2.</p>
<p>Barra brought up engineering manager Dave Burke, who built it in his 20 percent time.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a synching feature called &#8220;Chrome to Phone.&#8221;</p>
<p>This sounded like a 1990s band name.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is a low latency way to push information to the phone,&#8221; said Burke, using Google&#8217;s browser and an app for the mobile device.</p>
<p>There is a little icon on the Chrome browser you click that sends a variety of stuff to the app on an Android phone.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s certainly helpful.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am:</strong> Onto Q&#038;A about the two perfectly fine, though hardly earth-shaking, announcements.</p>
<p>Questions about the languages, bookmarking Chrome to Phone (not yet) and what&#8217;s coming next.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting interview BoomTown did last week with Seesmic Founder and CEO Loic Le Meur, whose status update client software is one of the more popular ones, at the Facebook f8 developers conference last week.</p>
<p>In it, he talked about the various new features of Facebook that make it &#8220;very, very close to Twitter.&#8221; Such as the new &#8220;Like&#8221; button being like a retweet on Twitter.</p>
<p>(Actually, the French-born Le Meur calls the microblogging service &#8220;<em>Tweeee</em>-ter.&#8221;)</p>
<p>In any case, he made some interesting points, especially since Seesmic&#8211;among others&#8211;was caught up in the controversies around the entry of Twitter into businesses so far pioneered by innovative third-party satellites of Twitter.</p>
<p>Still, Le Meur sought to downplay the conflict&#8211;even after Twitter bought the competing Tweetie desktop client&#8211;with a blogpost titled: <a href="http://www.loiclemeur.com/english/2010/04/fck-you-naysayers-twitter-did-not-fck-us-and-just-rocks.html">&#8220;F*CK you naysayers. Twitter did NOT f*ck us and just rocks.&#8221;</a></p>
<p><em>Alrighty then!</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week, we interviewed David Maher Roberts, CEO of The Filter. The Filter has been around for awhile, but has been reinvented as a service for content companies. It takes what David describes as some pretty high-caliber math and marries it to user data to spit out things users want to see and hear.</p>

<p><strong>Why</strong>: David came to The Filter from the publishing world. The Filter used to be a music-selection engine (pre-Apple Genius). Today, after a major overhaul, David says it&#8217;s trying to be a recommendation engine that brings &#8220;the world of entertainment, filtered for me.&#8221; Now The Filter offers that service to businesses that want a recommendation engine on top of their own content services. NBC is the company&#8217;s latest major client.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">Five Stats You Won&#8217;t Find in His Facebook Profile:</h4>
<p><strong>Man of the World</strong>: I don&#8217;t know where my accent is from. I&#8217;m half French and half English and was raised in international schools in Brussels. I&#8217;m a true European.</p>
<p><strong>Started Life</strong>: I went into journalism as a photographer. When I was 24, I started a couple of magazines, which didn&#8217;t go well, but I got picked up by a U.K.-based publisher (Future Publishing) and moved up their ranks.</p>
<p><strong>Biggest Influence</strong>: Chris Anderson, founder of Future Media (David&#8217;s former employer) and now of TED.</p>
<p><strong>Real Passion</strong>: I was trained as a jazz drummer from the age of 10 and always played in bands and things.</p>
<p><strong>On His Playlist</strong>: All based around French Electro Pop. Right now, I&#8217;ve fallen in love with Owl City. It represents exactly the sort of music I grew up with in France. It just makes me smile. My staple diet is much more British. Stuff like the Twang. My favorite band of all time is Belle and Sebastian.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">The Five Questions</h4>
<p class="question"><em>Break this down for me. What does The Filter do now, and why is Peter Gabriel involved?</em></p>

<p>Yeah, so Peter Gabriel was one of our founders and is an investor now. He and our CTO, Martin Hopkins, had the idea about 10 years ago that we would need some kind of tool to help us navigate the world of content when we had too much choice. Our model has changed since then, but we still do basically the same thing. Today, we are basically in the SaaS, software-as-a-service, business. Our technology gets laid on top of other businesses&#8217; content to deliver more relevant recommendations.</p>
<p>A good example is Nokia (NOK). They use us to combine information about your content preferences and your geolocation to give you recommendations about events nearby.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Let&#8217;s say I&#8217;m listening to music online. How much information about me does my music service need to give you in order for this to work?</em></p>
<p>Well, what we offer to most of our customers is an anonymous service. We do a lot of personalized services too, though. We can do a good job not knowing anything about the person and just about the session they are in right now. We take input like the piece of music, how many times you&#8217;ve listened, whether or not you&#8217;ve shared it or saved it to a play list, and then recommend statistically similar content. At its core, our product is a Bayesian inference engine, so it assigns mathematical probabilities to whether or not you will like something and then computes the best fit. We blend the metadata connections with the behavioral connections, and then we filter the output.</p>
<p class="question"><em>I&#8217;m a little hazy on how you connect consumers to their data and then make recommendations. You said you do use individual-level data sometimes. Do you guys use data collected from one company to inform the algorithm that recommends content at another? </em></p>
<p>Well, there are two things we are being careful about, as you&#8217;d imagine. Generally, we use data from within an organization to inform the decisions made there. We do anonymize and aggregate all of the data and use that for all of our customers. The individual-level data we try to keep anonymous.</p>
<p class="question"><em>What does a paper publishing guy have to offer a digital recommendation engine?</em></p>
<p>I came in originally as a consultant to help them with their &#8220;come to market&#8221; strategy. I was running all of Future Publishing&#8217;s Web operations for Europe and stumbled upon Eden Ventures, who are the VCs behind The Filter. I came in, and there was already a CEO. I didn&#8217;t realize they were trying to replace him, but we worked on what they should be doing and at the end of it they offered me the job. I would say that I come in from the content and publishing world, and I know how media companies make the kinds of decisions like using a service like The Filter.</p>
<p class="question"><em>What is the eventuality you guys hope for here? Is success in ubiquity or in being bought up? </em></p>
<p>I think my goal with The Filter is to grow it to be so large that it is the glue that connects people to their content. Once that happens, I think we&#8217;d hope for a large business to be so connected to our technology that they want to own it.</p>

<p>BoomTown liveblogged Google&#8217;s earnings call this afternoon.</p>
<p>Earlier today, Google (GOOG) beat Wall Street&#8217;s expectations in its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100415/google-beats-wall-street-expectations-but-what-are-its-expectations-going-forward/">first-quarter earnings</a>, signaling that online advertising spending is back on track.</p>
<p>Here we go:</p>
<p><strong>1:30 pm PT:</strong> Investor lady went over investor stuff. <em>Zzzz.</em></p>
<p><strong>1:33 pm:</strong> First up: Patrick Pichette, CFO of Google, whose delightful French accent livened up what was an almost entirely newsless event.</p>
<p>In fact, it turned out that the biggest news was changes in how Google presents its earnings calls going forward: No more CEO Eric Schmidt!</p>
<p>Instead, it will be Pichette from here on out, along with sidekick and head products dude Jonathan Rosenberg. Who was not around today, so top Google execs Susan Wojcicki and Jeff Huber filled in.</p>
<p>Also making an appearance, Nikesh Arora, president of Global Sales Operations and Business Development.</p>
<p>Thus, a parade of Google execs replaced Schmidt&#8211;all of whom said as little as he used to!</p>
<p>Pichette went through the numbers&#8211;lots and lots of them.</p>
<p>&#8220;Very strong performance, across the board, in terms of revenue,&#8221; he concluded.</p>
<p><strong>1:44 pm:</strong> Next up, Wojcicki&#8211;fun fact about the VP of Product Management: Google was started in her garage&#8211;talking about improvements to ad search results.</p>
<p>They are going to get fat and detailed, apparently, with all kinds of stuff attached to them.</p>
<p>&#8220;The idea is for them to be more useful and therefore more high performing,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>In display, Wojcicki said there was &#8220;very strong momentum.&#8221; More DoubleClick integration, more analytics.</p>
<p>Mobile: &#8220;Doing very well.&#8221; (I look forward to the first analyst question about its regulatory approval problem with Google&#8217;s $750 million AdMob acquisition.)</p>
<p>There will be an ability to &#8220;call through&#8221; on ads in smartphones, which sounds kind of cool.</p>
<p><strong>1:51 pm:</strong> Next, it was Huber&#8217;s turn. He is SVP of Engineering.</p>
<p>He started with mobile and geolocation features Google is working on, some of which sounded a bit stalkerish. To the all-seeing eye of Google, they are fabulous, of course.</p>
<p>Its Android and Chrome operating systems are growing, Huber said, noting that there are now 34 Android devices.</p>
<p>Take <em>that</em>, Apple!&#8211;which has but one (which is doing pretty well on its own, Huber declined to add).</p>
<p><strong>1:55 pm</strong>: Arora joined the call with the others for Q&#038;A.</p>
<p>Questions about international advertising. All was well, said both Pichette and Arora.</p>
<p>Next question was about the percentage of revenue from enterprise and mobile. Also what up with Nexus One?</p>
<p>Pichette was not saying, of course, as that information would be useful.</p>
<p>Also no data on the profits of Nexus one, which Pichette noted was indeed profitable. But Google wasn&#8217;t saying how much! More non-news.</p>
<p>Finally, a good question about whether Google will remain on Apple (AAPL) products&#8211;given growing corporate rivalry between the two&#8211;and why the heck Schmidt is not on the call anymore and whether there is more to it.</p>
<p>Pichette became slightly agitated about the CEO question.</p>
<p>Eric has been <em>everywhere</em>! Abu Dhabi! Washington, D.C.! Jetting around on the GooglePlane like it was nobody&#8217;s business!</p>
<p>&#8220;It does not mean that Eric is not available,&#8221; said Pichette, explaining that the move is simply a question of &#8220;streamlining.&#8221;</p>
<p>Huber declined to comment about Apple, of course!</p>
<p>But, blood in the water: What&#8217;s up with Facebook competition?</p>
<p>This is a true oucher for Google internally, with execs quite concerned about the social networking site&#8217;s growth, even if Huber did not admit it and called it &#8220;not a significant issue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Translation: It&#8217;s significant.</p>
<p><strong>2:04 pm</strong> Back to the sleepy questions on marketing and how the company feels about upcoming quarters compared with previous ones.</p>
<p>Hey, the colorful letters of Google and Googley goodness are just not cutting it anymore! You need some pretty ads! You have to promote! After all, Google has actual products now, like the Nexus One.</p>
<p>The next questions were on the number of Nexus One phones sold and, finally, on China.</p>
<p>Huber was not disclosing! If there were a badillion devices sold, you know he would, of course.</p>
<p>Pichette took the China question.</p>
<p>&#8220;This was a tough situation, but we really think we made the right decision,&#8221; he said, noting that the company is kind of still in China from Hong Kong.</p>
<p>Well, not really, but it <em>was</em> the right decision.</p>
<p><strong>2:10 pm:</strong> Another good question on the News Corp. (NWS) deal and the AdMob situation.</p>
<p>Pichette pointed out the the mobile ad market is &#8220;nascent,&#8221; naturally noting that Apple announced its recently announced iAd network.</p>
<p>In other words, let&#8217;s keep pointing to what Apple is up to to save our bacon with the government.</p>
<p>&#8220;Google wants every partner,&#8221; said Pichette about renewing the deal over MySpace, but added that economics have changed since the first one was done with the then-hot-and-now-not social networking site.</p>
<p>Translation: Don&#8217;t expect a big check, Rupert Murdoch!</p>
<p>More in-the-weeds questions, which provided some insight, but not much.</p>
<p><strong>2:28 pm:</strong> Another China question about whether serving its results from Hong Kong is sustainable.</p>
<p>Yes, said Pichette.</p>
<p>More about search advertising innovations and targeting. Google is all over it, said Wojcicki in many, many, many more words.</p>
<p>This line of questioning continued until someone asked whether the reported tensions between Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brin over China are behind his absence.</p>
<p>Juicy, but completely <em>ridonkulous</em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Non</em>,&#8221; laughed Pichette, answering in a jaunty way.</p>
<p>The lack of Schmidt, he added, was not a negative, but part of a review of stuff Google could do better. In fact, it was an innovation!</p>
<p>Mais oui or mais non, it was the most interesting news of the day.</p>

But 2009 provides important context  when you see reports about improved results. Because those often just mean &#8220;less bad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s example: Publicis, the giant French ad holding company. Publicis said its organic growth&#8211;that&#8217;s revenue after factoring out acquisitions like <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090809/microsofts-addition-by-subtraction-goodbye-razorfish-hello-bing-customers/">Razorfish, which it picked up in a fire sale from Microsoft</a> (MSFT), etc.&#8211;declined by 5.4 percent, which is better than the 7.4 percent drop it posted in Q3. But this still means the company is shrinking, and that&#8217;s compared with dismal results from a year ago.</p>
<p>Publicis now says it expects to actually grow this year, so that&#8217;s good. But it&#8217;s not projecting anything substantial for another year.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have not yet come out of the crisis. We are in the process of getting out of it. One can still expect a few hurdles along the way, but the worst is over,&#8221; says <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idCNLDE61E0V820100217?rpc=44">CEO Maurice Levy</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the countdown goes on to the moment when the almighty Apple (AAPL) tablet is introduced (and geekery as we know it is forever changed), a preponderance of fake “leaked” photos and even commercials for the much-hyped gadget have spread across the Internet like wildfire.</p>
<p>How do we know they are fake? Well, we don’t, actually. A commenter on my own tablet story posted a link to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9uXxICUc9E">this YouTube video</a>, which features a 360-degree view of a tablet-like device and some paintball splotches that are similar to the graphics on the invite for the Apple event. And, typical of Apple commercials, the spot features a catchy tune from an indie-ish band (in this case, it’s “Someday I Won’t Exist” by Cola-Cola).</p>
<p>But Gizmodo cried foul about a similar YouTube video from a super legit-sounding site called nowhereelse.fr, saying the tablet depicted in it “has USB ports in the back that would necessitate a device twice as thick as the one shown” (we’ll take their word for it) and “looks faker than Heidi Montag.” Well, all right, then. Driving another nail into the coffin is TechCrunch, which noted that the translation from French on the nowhereelse site reads: “in the meantime, here’s what an advertisement might look like….” Whoops.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apps are hot. These are the small programs that can be installed on a digital gadget to get it to do more than what it did when you bought it. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch are the best app platforms right now thanks to the company&#8217;s App Store, which offers an estimated 125,000 apps. Research in Motion (RIMM), Android, and Palm (PALM) devices also work with apps.</p>
<p>But why should smart phones have all the fun? Yahoo (YHOO) Connected TVs from Samsung, LG (LG), Sony (SNE), and Vizio allow people to load app-like &#8220;widgets&#8221;—including Facebook, Twitter, weather and stock quotes—onto their big-screen TVs. And GPS navigation devices take advantage of apps for information on fuel prices and traffic. </p>

<p>This week, I tested a Bluetooth earpiece that also can be made smarter with apps: Aliph&#8217;s $100 Jawbone Icon (http://us.jawbone.com). Like many other wireless earpieces, it connects to your Bluetooth-enabled phone so you can talk, hands-free. Unlike other Bluetooth earpieces, the Jawbone Icon can be plugged into a computer and loaded with different settings and apps. This works using Aliph&#8217;s Web-based software platform called MyTalk (http://mytalk.jawbone.com) and some apps enable more than hands-free talking. </p>
<p>For now, there are only two apps that truly expand the functionality of the earpiece, in my opinion. But MyTalk is a good start in making this tiny Bluetooth device more sophisticated and encouraging more hands-free productivity.</p>
<p>The idea of connecting an earpiece to a PC is helpful in two respects. First, it turns the Jawbone into a dynamic product that can be updated and enhanced over time, rather than never changing from the day you buy it. Second, it lets users more easily adjust the settings of a device that&#8217;s too tiny to have its own screen, thus eliminating the need for more confusing buttons on the device. Over time, these earpieces could become even simpler and smaller as more of their settings are adjusted on the computer.</p>
<p>Since the Jawbone Icon and its MyTalk software platform launched this week, only five &#8220;dial apps&#8221; and 10 &#8220;audio apps&#8221; are available for synching to the earpiece. The former are apps that perform functions by dialing out on your phone, like hands-free text messaging; the latter are settings to adjust the voice making announcements in your ear, like telling you that the battery needs charging. As of now, only one of each app category can be synched onto the Jawbone Icon at any given time. Aliph plans to make the Icon capable of simultaneously running multiple apps sometime this year.</p>
<p>If you ever used one of the earlier Jawbone models and thought you weren&#8217;t hip enough to remember how its hidden earpiece buttons worked, the Jawbone Icon&#8217;s refreshingly simple design will bring a sigh of relief. It uses two easily detected controls. One is an obvious button on the top of the earpiece that controls the earpiece&#8217;s functions. The other is a tiny on/off switch on the inside surface that couldn&#8217;t be easier to use. </p>

<p>The Icon comes in six models with catchy names that match the &#8220;persona&#8221; of the  audio apps: The Hero, The Rogue, The Ace, The Catch, The Thinker and The Bombshell—each literally has its own distinct voice. Each device weighs less and has a wider and shorter design than previous Jawbones. The Icons come in shades of black, silver, white, red and gold, depending on the model&#8217;s persona, and resemble handsome jewelry. </p>
<p>Each earpiece has a short, gray bendable USB connector that allows for easy  access to a PC&#8217;s USB port. This is used for synching and charging the earpiece, though a separate wall charger also comes in the box. </p>
<p>I tested my Jawbone Icon by plugging it into both an Apple MacBook Pro and a Dell (DELL) running Windows 7. I logged onto http://mytalk.jawbone.com and requested an invitation to use the MyTalk software by sending Aliph my email since it&#8217;s still in a &#8220;private beta&#8221; or experimental phase. You&#8217;ll have to do the same until MyTalk comes out of its private beta stage sometime in the next few months. </p>
<p>After setting up an account using my email and a password, I followed on-screen instructions to get started with synching apps to my earpiece.</p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s dial apps include five programs that help you do more with your voice, so you don&#8217;t need to look down to type on a mobile device. Once synched with your Jawbone Icon, the app will activate as soon as you press and hold the earpiece button. </p>
<p>For now, only two of the five dial apps are really helpful for the headset: Jott and Dial2Do. Both let people use their voice to send themselves reminders, send tweets on Twitter, and send text messages—assuming the programs correctly interpret what is dictated. I had pretty good luck with this, though one test of the text-messaging function thought I said &#8220;needle&#8221; when I really said &#8220;noodle&#8221; and another interpreted &#8220;blinds&#8221; as &#8220;blind.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of the two, I found Dial2Do a little easier to use. Its Basic Account is free but is limited to sending yourself reminders, while a Pro Account costs $40 a year or $3.99 a month, and offers social-networking, emailing and text-messaging, among other things. Jott can only be used free for one week, but requires a credit-card number for signing up and will charge $2.95 a month after the trial week is over. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s remaining three dial apps aren&#8217;t too exciting: &#8220;Directory Assistance 411&#8243; and &#8220;Voice Dial,&#8221; a feature that only works if your phone has built-in voice-dial capability, which most do now. Another app called 1-800-FREE411 lets users get 411 information without being charged carrier fees. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s audio apps include six playful voices, three in different languages (German, Spanish and French) and one plain, unaccented English voice. Each of the playful voices has a coinciding photo and name when you&#8217;re picking settings on the Web site. One called &#8220;The Bombshell&#8221; is represented by an attractive, blonde woman who speaks in a sexy voice. A voice called &#8220;The Rogue&#8221; says, &#8220;I am ready for my assignment,&#8221; when the earpiece is turned on. During most of my testing, I kept my Jawbone Icon set on &#8220;The Ace,&#8221; represented by a woman with a smart British accent who said, &#8220;They can wait,&#8221; when I declined calls. </p>
<p>The chosen audio app voice speaks every so often, like when the device is turned on, when you query the headset&#8217;s remaining battery life (an indicator light also tells you the remaining charge), when an incoming call is received or when you turn the headset off. But the Voice Dial app uses the standard voice that comes with your device&#8217;s voice-dialing capability—not the fun audio app voice you&#8217;ve chosen. </p>
<p>Another downside to the headset is that it isn&#8217;t yet able to tell you the name of whoever is calling even if you have them as a contact in your phone; instead, it only reads the phone number aloud. If you&#8217;re like me, you don&#8217;t know have many numbers memorized anymore, so this isn&#8217;t helpful. Instead, it forced me to look at my phone for the caller ID, defeating the purpose of a hands-free earpiece. Aliph hopes to fix this problem within a year.</p>
<p>The Jawbone Icon is the first earpiece to use a software platform for adding apps, and MyTalk makes synching easy. Although Aliph plans to offer more apps and software updates for the Jawbone Icon (and subsequent devices), there will likely always be some activities that are simply too difficult to perform using voice alone. But MyTalk is a good first step toward making the Bluetooth earpiece more useful.</p>

<p>The noisy kerfuffle that broke out yesterday over whether a France Telecom exec did or did not confirm in an interview whether there is or is not an Apple tablet computer coming soon would be comical if it were not so&#8211;<em>how shall I put it delicately?</em>&#8211;inane.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s going to be the way it is for the next few weeks until Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs finally unveils what everyone in Silicon Valley pretty much knows he has been cooking up for a while now.</p>
<p>Which is, of course, the iSlate. Or iPad. Or the iWhatever.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100104/major-apple-product-announcement">planned Apple event on Jan. 27</a>, of course, as well as a steady stream of decent reporting by many that this is exactly what&#8217;s coming.</p>
<p>The Wall Street Journal, for example, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424052748703580904574638630584151614-lMyQjAxMTAwMDAwNDEwNDQyWj.html">reported last week</a> that Apple plans to ship the tablet in March and that it will feature either a 10-inch or 11-inch touchscreen. The paper also cited analysts who estimate the tablet will cost $1,000 and may include a built-in wireless plan.</p>
<p>Other than that, there is not much more new detailed information out there.</p>
<p>And, as it turned out, what the exec from France Telecom, which owns the Orange mobile service there, actually meant got lost in translation.</p>
<p>Along with doing a John the Baptist, he seems to have said that the device will include wireless and a Webcam.</p>
<p>But not so fast! Orange PR <a href="http://paidcontent.co.uk/article/419-orange-no-we-didnt-just-confirm-apples-tablet/">told paidContent</a> that the exec&#8217;s remarks were &#8220;a few comments taken out of context, then interpreted into English.&#8221;</p>
<p>As paidContent further wrote:</p>
<p>&#8220;A full statement emailed to us has further back-tracking: &#8216;These responses in no way reflect Orange&#8217;s confirmation of the existence of the rumoured device. The spokesperson was merely confirming that he is aware of the speculation surrounding a launch and that Orange would be delighted to have such a product were it ever to be available.&#8217;”</p>
<p>Well, <em>that</em> clears it up!</p>
<p>Actually, it would be great to see more information about what is and what is not in the new device over the next days before we all get to see it, as well as much more on exactly which entertainment, wireless, publishing and other partners are involved.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a lot of folks, so concentrating on finding out what&#8217;s in the package instead of wondering if Christmas for Apple fanboys is coming would be a good idea about now.</p>
<p>In other words: Yes, you geeks, Steve Jobs will be Santa Claus soon.</p>
<p>Now let&#8217;s find out whether what he&#8217;s bringing will be naughty or nice, innovative or not so much.</p>

<p>And now, some video. Yesterday a 10-minute clip of what appears to be someone taking the phone through its paces popped up on the Web. There&#8217;s no sound, and the device appears to be configured for French speakers, so if you&#8217;re an American with a short attention span, I&#8217;m not sure what the appeal would be. But some of you are going to want to watch it, anyway.</p>
<p>This is normally be the place where I would embed the relevant YouTube video. But this is one video Google doesn&#8217;t want on its video site, and the company is pulling the footage down as quickly as it can. (This is where I imagine the Viacom guys chortling and rubbing their hands).</p>
<p>That said, you can find the clip without much effort, particularly if you search <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbp2ez_google-nexus-one_tech">other video sites not owned by Google</a>. Have at it, if that floats your boat.</p>

The company’s investment arm,  <a href="http://mediacenter.motorola.com/Content/Detail.aspx?ReleaseID=12185&amp;NewsAreaID=2">Motorola Ventures, has put some money into Sensitive Object</a>, a French start-up that has developed haptic technology that can transform almost any surface into a multitouch interface.  </p>
<p>As I understand it, <a href="http://www.sensitive-object.com/spip.php">Sensitive Object’s &#8220;Anywhere MultiTouch&#8221; platform</a> uses acoustic touch recognition to capture the audio vibrations that occur when an object is tapped or swiped and uses them to relay user input for information and control. It can be applied to a variety of materials&#8211;metal, glass, plastic etc.&#8211;rendering them touch-sensitive. Motorola (MOT) could obviously put this to good use, especially helping the company differentiate its touch smartphones from those of its rivals.</p>
<p>Imagine how infuriating it would be for Steve Jobs if Motorola, not Apple (AAPL), was first with an entirely button-free smartphone?</p>

<p>To translate the English term for computing resources that can be accessed on demand on the Internet, a group of French experts had spent 18 months coming up with &#8220;informatique en nuage,&#8221; which literally means &#8220;computing in cloud.&#8221;</p>
<p>France&#8217;s General Commission of Terminology and Neology&#8211;a 17-member group of professors, linguists, scientists and a former ambassador&#8211;was gathered in a building overlooking the Louvre to approve the term.</p>
<p>&#8220;What? This means nothing to me. I put a &#8216;cloud&#8217; of milk in my tea!&#8221; exclaimed Jean Saint-Geours, a French writer and member of the Terminology Commission.</p>

And one of the world&#8217;s biggest ad companies says that won&#8217;t be the last assault.</p>
<p>Publicis, the giant French ad holding company, has been warning Web publishers to be &#8220;hyper-vigilant&#8221; about other bogus ads like the ones the Times mistakenly sold, which were purportedly for Vonage (VG) but were actually designed to distribute malware. Publicis, whose units includes <span>Starcom, Digitas, Optimedia, MediaVest, Zenith, and Spark, has been sending out letters warning publishers to be wary of the rogue ads, which it describes as an &#8220;industry issue.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>The catch: It appears that the only way to combat the attacks, at least in the near-term, is to do something that runs counter to industry trends: Throw bodies at the problem. Publicis wants publishers to individually verify the ad orders they receive, which would be a nonissue for traditional media but is a problem for Web publishing, which increasingly relies on automation. <a href="http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&amp;art_aid=115166">Mediapost</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The incidents have exposed potential vulnerabilities in on online publishing security, and are causing advertisers, agencies and publishers alike to reassess the processes they use to conduct business, especially as they interact with an increasing array of third-party intermediaries&#8211;advertising networks, exchanges, etc.&#8211;many of which place insertion orders automatically and without human intervention. The solution, as the <em>Times</em>&rsquo; and Publicis&#8217; new policies suggest, is to reinsert human interaction into the process&#8211;at least for the time being.</p></blockquote>
<p>Whoops. That whole thrust of Web publishing is get humans as far away as possible from buying and selling decisions: The ad exchange that Google (GOOG) launched last month, for instance, is designed to handle those tasks in milliseconds. Now think about how long it takes to pick up the phone to actually confirm that ad buyers are who they say they are [shudder].</p>
<p>It&#8217;s possible that this is simply butt-covering on the part of Publicis (these attacks have been out there for <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090120/did-you-just-click-on-a-fake-hyundai-ad/">quite some time</a>) and that this will blow over soon. But I don&#8217;t think so. Which means the ascent of Web ads may slow down, just a bit, as the industry figures out just how many humans it will take to fight the problem.</p>

That’s the day on which Google, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers are to submit an amended version of their book settlement, one that addresses concerns that it might give them unfair advantage over other digital libraries or violate copyright laws abroad.</p>
<p>The judge presiding over the case, who’d been urged by the U.S. Department of Justice to reject an earlier version of the settlement, set that date during a morning hearing so brief that when <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091007/live-from-new-york-google-cofounder-sergey-brin-meets-the-press/">MediaMemo’s Peter Kafka asked Google CEO Eric Schmidt about it at a company roundtable this morning</a>, Schmidt was unaware a date had been set. When Peter broke the news to him, Schmidt didn&#8217;t have much of a comment, but he did speak briefly about the settlement and Google&#8217;s view of it earlier in the morning.</p>

With respect to book search, we were doing something that we thought was appropriate. We were sued, and after three years of discussion we’ve come to a settlement. This is perfectly normal. From our perspective, this is a settlement we like, it’s a settlement we think they’ll like, and we’ll hear what the court says, within minutes. Let me reframe your question: There’s nothing particularly exclusive about what we’re doing. The rights registry we’re doing is for the benefit of orphan works. &#8220;It’s not a particularly good business for us. We’re doing it because we think it’s the right thing to do.&#8221; We don’t think the settlement is perfect, but we think it’s good.</p></blockquote>
<p>Though it’s not yet clear what form the revised settlement might take or what adjusted terms are being discussed, Google and the authors and publishers it has allied with it have quite a few critics to appease, including academics, librarians, privacy advocates, would-be rivals and the French and German governments.</p>

<p>&#8220;We expect Apple to add new iPhone carriers in the U.S. within the next year (likely with a new product launch next summer), Munster writes. &#8220;By way of example, for various reasons the company moved from an exclusive relationship with French wireless carrier Orange to a multi-carrier model. In France, the company now enjoys dramatically higher market share (in the 40% range vs. about 15% in ROW) than in countries with exclusive carrier agreements (such as AT&#038;T in the U.S. where the iPhone has market share in the mid-teens). We believe Apple is seeing the increased unit sell-through more than offset the slightly (~10%) deteriorated economics per unit involved in non-exclusive agreements.&#8221;</p>
<p>If Munster’s prediction proves true, it will undoubtedly be welcomed by iPhone owners&#8211;<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090821/iphone-owners-would-like-to-replace-battery-att/">nearly a third of whom listed AT&#038;T as the feature they dislike most in the iPhone in a recent ChangeWave survey</a>. But it will be ugly news for AT&#038;T (T), which could suffer some serious subscriber defections if the company loses its iPhone-exclusivity deal&#8211;particularly if Apple signs on Verizon (VZ) as a second carrier. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090717/analyst-att-screwed-without-iphone-exclusivity/">As Pali Research recently noted</a>:</p>

<p>If you&#8217;ve ever learned a foreign language, you know the vast difference between completing workbook activities and speaking with others. The latter experience can involve sounding out unfamiliar accents or guttural pronunciations and, though intimidating, is ultimately more rewarding. By immersing yourself in a language and navigating through situations, you learn how to speak and eventually think in that language.</p>
<p>Rosetta Stone (RST) has long used visual learning without translations by pairing words with images—one of the ways a baby learns to speak. For the past week, I&#8217;ve been testing its newest offering: Rosetta Stone Totale (pronounced toe-tall-A), which is the company&#8217;s first fully Web-based language-learning program. It aims to immerse you in a language using three parts: online coursework that can take up to 150 hours; live sessions in which you can converse over the Web with a native-speaking coach and other students; and access to Rosetta World, a Web-based community where you can play language games by yourself or with other students to improve your skills.</p>

<p>Totale costs a whopping $999, so if you aren&#8217;t serious about learning a language it&#8217;s a tough sell. Rosetta Stone says this program is comparable to an in-country language-immersion school. The company&#8217;s most expensive offering before Totale was a set of CDs (lessons one, two and three) that cost $549, included about 120 hours of course work and had no online components. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">The Totale Package</h5>
<p>Since Totale is Web-based it doesn&#8217;t come loaded onto several disks in a yellow box like the company&#8217;s previous products. But despite this digital transition, buyers of Totale will still receive Rosetta&#8217;s familiar yellow box, now filled with a USB headset and supplemental audio discs for practicing away from the PC—mostly while in the car.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve spent over eight hours learning French in Totale throughout the past week, and I have to say that I&#8217;m surprised by how much I feel I&#8217;ve already learned. I realized this when I spent a 30-minute car ride listening to one of the supplemental audio CDs. I mentally identified and translated practically every vocabulary word and phrase, and I repeated the words aloud with what I thought sounded like a pretty decent French accent. This was after just four hours of work online.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Intensive Coursework</h5>
<p>The core of Totale is the time-intensive online coursework. But even though this takes a lot of effort, its layout is attractive and each screen has only a few things on it so it doesn&#8217;t feel overwhelming. Lessons include identifying photos of objects or situations as they are described aloud, writing phrases (my least favorite part), and using deductive reasoning to construct and dictate your own sentences about a photo. Totale&#8217;s headset comes in handy during exercises that require you to repeat words or sounds out loud into the microphone.</p>
<p>Activities in Rosetta World—including solo, two-person and group games—were addictively fun. One game plays like Bingo: I listened to someone speaking French and marked words on the board as I heard them, racing to get five words horizontally, vertically or diagonally before my opponent beat me to it. I waded into these games cautiously at first, playing alone before I got familiar enough to challenge another Totale user.</p>
<p>Helpful indicators show how many people are available at any given time for each type of game in Rosetta World—meaning that person is logged into Totale and studying the same language as you. I never saw more than five people in the community, and it gets a little old playing (or worse, losing) to the same person after a while. Since Totale was only recently released, this community should grow over time. </p>
<p>A chat window at the bottom left of the browser window reminded me of Facebook&#8217;s built-in instant-messaging program, listing users against whom I competed in online games. But unlike when I&#8217;m on Facebook, I didn&#8217;t feel comfortable instant messaging with these people.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">No Flashcards</h5>
<p>Rosetta Stone&#8217;s methods, while natural and easy to pick up, aren&#8217;t what my brain expects when learning a different language. I minored in Spanish in college, learning in traditional classroom style by studying verb conjugations on flashcards and vocabulary definitions in English. So at certain times throughout Totale&#8217;s French-only lessons, a part of me wanted to know the exact definition of a phrase or the reasoning behind why something was the way it was.</p>
<p>The moment of truth came when I attended a real-time, 50-minute studio session online with one of the live coaches—all of whom are native speakers—and two other students (four students is the maximum allowed per class). </p>
<p>Rosetta Stone recommends that students complete an entire unit before joining one of these studio sessions, and the only language you are permitted to speak during the studio is the one being studied. I proudly remembered all of my new vocabulary words as our coach pointed the cursor to animals, colors and clothing, asking us questions and prompting us to ask one another questions. The coach kindly corrected us when we made mistakes, made jokes about words and used an on-screen tool to type out a few of the harder phrases.</p>
<p>But I fumbled around trying to remember the correct phrases and grammar to go along with my vocabulary. </p>
<p>I frustratingly realized that I didn&#8217;t even know how to ask my coach in French, &#8220;Why is that blanc and not blanche?&#8221; Our coach eventually answered that question and some others without anyone&#8217;s prompting because it was obvious that none of us knew what forms of some words were right or why; Totale&#8217;s coursework doesn&#8217;t include explanations. A few of the phrases our coach explained still puzzled me and I was starting to miss my flashcards from Spanish class.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Team Effort</h5>
<p>Rosetta Stone is determined to make sure you don&#8217;t feel like you&#8217;re alone as you work through the Totale program. A &#8220;Customer Success Team&#8221; representative calls you within a day of your product purchase to answer any questions or concerns about how everything works. And this team keeps calling or emailing (you tell them which contact method you prefer) whenever you have passed a milestone in the program—or to encourage you to pick it up again if you haven&#8217;t logged on in a while.</p>
<p>Even for $999, you can go back in and re-use every feature in Totale, but only for one year. You can reset your scores and completely start over, attending online studios again and playing games in Rosetta World as many times as you like. But once a year is up, you&#8217;re finished with the program.</p>
<p>Rosetta Stone Totale works on all major Mac and Windows PC browsers, though participating in a studio session while using some browsers requires you turn off their pop-up blockers. </p>
<p>I still have work to do in Totale, but I&#8217;m looking forward to it—even though I find some aspects to be a bit vague. This program does a terrific job of immersing you in a language and may be the next best thing to living in a country, surrounded by native speakers. Best of all, unlike my semester abroad in Spain where college friends gave me my daily fix of the English language, Totale never lets you slip out of using the language you&#8217;re studying.</p>

Now live, the move is a natural extension for the Mountain View, Calif.-based start-up--founded earlier this year by a small gang of ex-Googlers, who joined together to create a service for super-aggregating updates of all kinds for social-networking and news items in an ongoing feed. <p>This morning, FriendFeed, which is a kind of content delivery version of Twitter, went international, launching in six new languages&#8211;German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Russian and simplified Chinese.</p>
<p>Now live, the move is a natural extension for the Mountain View, Calif.-based start-up&#8211;which was founded earlier this year by a small gang of ex-Googlers: Bret Taylor, Paul Buchheit, Jim Norris and Sanjeev Singh. The company says that one-third of users already use <a href="http://www.friendfeed.com">FriendFeed</a> in languages other than English.</p>
<p>More languages are planned, said the company, which specializes in super-aggregating updates of all kinds for social-networking and news items in an ongoing feed from places like Facebook, YouTube, Digg, Twitter and Flickr.</p>
<p>Given all the dissipated ways people communicate on the Web, FriendFeed lets users collect all these links, some of them in rich media and some just text messages, to share publicly or privately.</p>
<p>I find the service very useful and compelling, so I paid a visit to its HQ last week to chat up Taylor and Buchheit.</p>
<p>We talked about a range of topics, including&#8211;my favorite&#8211;monetization, or lack thereof, of a lot of terrific Web 2.0 services like FriendFeed and Twitter.</p>
<p>The pair, in a less overt manner than Twitter&#8217;s CEO Evan Williams, did acknowledge the focus on growth over revenue, although they did seem intent on figuring out a true business plan sooner than later.</p>
<p>FriendFeed certainly has time to do so&#8211;it is a small and inexpensive start-up with a dozen employees, funded with only $4 million from Buchheit and Singh and $1 million from Benchmark Capital.</p>
