<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/08/frontierVille_pioneer-trail_logo.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-106982" title="frontierVille_pioneer trail_logo" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/08/frontierVille_pioneer-trail_logo-380x152.png" alt="" width="380" height="152" /></a>The original version of the game challenges players to build a homestead on the frontier, and to complete such tasks as building a cabin, getting married and having children.</p>
<p>In this new game play, called Pioneer Trail, users must hit the road in a covered wagon to find a boy who has been kidnapped. Players travel along a route, collecting clues to solve the kidnapping, completing quests and entering different environments, such as Beaver Valley, the High Plains and the snowy Avalanche Pass.</p>
<p>Major content rereleases like this one are a way for game developers to make older titles more engaging for existing players, while drawing in people who have never played the game.</p>
<p>Over the past year, FrontierVille has fallen to about 3.5 million daily active users from its all-time high of nearly nine million. FrontierVille is the 23rd most popular application on Facebook today, <a href="http://www.appdata.com/leaderboard/apps">according to AppData.com</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/08/frontierville_High-Plains.png"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-106983" title="frontierville_High Plains" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/08/frontierville_High-Plains-380x230.png" alt="" width="380" height="230" /></a>But fewer active users doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean the game monetizes poorly. In fact, some of the oldest games in the industry &#8212; which itself is only about three years old &#8212; perform better than some new games, because dedicated players tend to spend more. What <em>is</em> a little unpredictable in social gaming is the life cycle: How long will these games last and be supported with major content releases?</p>
<p>In March, Zynga rolled out a similar update to FarmVille called English Countryside, where players got to start over with a fresh slate and have access to different kinds of crops and decorations.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s addition to FrontierVille is a little different, because it offers users a minigame to play in addition to tending to their normal homestead. Likewise, Zynga is experimenting with a few new techniques that stray from the trademark elements found in its games to date.</p>
<p>One of the main things that&#8217;s changed is how players interact with their friends on Facebook.</p>
<p>Instead of trying to get as many friends to play with you as possible, players only need three very engaged friends to help them along the trail. And players can now choose to be matched with strangers, just in case they don&#8217;t have a friend who is willing to play as intensely as they do. Other games on Facebook have been experimenting with this for some time.</p>
<p>Not requiring players to enlist the help from their friends is a big deal &#8212; they are &#8220;social&#8221; games, after all. This limits the ability of the game to be shared through friends, which is one of the major viral channels on Facebook.</p>
<p>John Osvald, GM of FrontierVille, said Pioneer Trail breaks a lot of new ground for Zynga. He said that it turns out that players &#8220;don’t like trying to get a hundred neighbors. They do it, but they don’t love it, so we wanted to make the interactions really important &#8230; We wanted to set this up so that visiting your friends is the most important thing, and make it so powerful that it can’t be hundreds of people. We made it just three people.&#8221;</p>
<p>Zynga did keep some viral components in tack. For instance, at some points on the trail, wildfires will break out, and players can either slowly contain them with the help of their three friends, or ask all their friends on Facebook for help.</p>
<p>One element that is also different is the size of the game.</p>
<p>The Pioneer Trail game board is about five times the size of past Zynga games. Osvald estimates that the trail will take at least a couple weeks for some of the more hardcore players to complete. Plus, since there are so many quests and hidden missions, players may want to repeat it and play the trail more than once. They should get a slightly different outcome each time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Call it a flair for the dramatic or a love of telling and hearing juicy stories. Whatever the reason, people have a tendency to talk more about their bad customer-service experiences than the good ones.</p>

<p>This week, I tested Tello (Tello.com), a new customer-service website and mobile app that encourages users to chime in on their customer-service experiences, good or bad. Businesses, or specific employees at those businesses, can be rated with a thumbs up or thumbs down and a detailed comment. </p>
<p>Tello was released in the Apple App Store this week, but I got special permission to test it early. It&#8217;s currently available for use at Tello.com, on other devices via mobile browsers at m.tello.com or as a native app on Apple&#8217;s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Tello&#8217;s founder and CEO, Joe Beninato, said an Android app is due out this spring.</p>
<p>At first glance, Tello seems to be another location-based service like Foursquare or Gowalla, which encourage people to &#8220;check in&#8221; while they&#8217;re at a specific place to find friends who are checked in there, or to earn badges and titles for checking in there more than anyone else. Broader review sites like Yelp let people comment on various aspects of a place or experience. But people using these services aren&#8217;t rating customer service specifically.</p>
<p>On the upside, Tello&#8217;s narrow scope means people know they&#8217;re reading solely about customer service, without hearing numerous details about other aspects of a business. </p>

<p>The downside to Tello is that it can be hard to sum up an entire experience without considering other factors involved. If someone visits the new Italian restaurant down the street and its ambiance and food are outstanding, yet the wait staff is deplorable, a thumbs up or thumbs down doesn&#8217;t tell the whole story. For expert complainers, or people who like more space for expressing their opinions, Tello may seem too succinct. Its app and home page display portions of comments along with user ratings, so if you waxed on for a thousand words about a hotel&#8217;s poor Wi-Fi, bad lighting and slow room service, most people wouldn&#8217;t see those remarks at a glance. </p>
<p>Part of Tello&#8217;s appeal is that it offers a peek in on customer-service experiences around the country, so before I flew to California this week I took a look at Tello to see what businesses are getting good ratings out there. Only a relatively small group of beta testers were using Tello when I was testing it, limiting the number of rated businesses. But this will improve as more people use the service.</p>
<p>The Tello app uses GPS to recognize a user&#8217;s location and then displays a list of nearby businesses; nearby, in this case, is defined as within two-tenths of a mile. If people type in the name of a business and search, this broadens the location range search to within five miles. </p>
<p>On a few occasions, including a trip to my Washington, D.C., neighborhood&#8217;s independent coffee shop, a Greek restaurant and a Potbelly Sandwich Shop, I came up empty handed when I looked for reviews of these places. Mr. Beninato explained this was because some aspects of the search engine weren&#8217;t finalized at the time I was testing, and in one case, I was too far away from the business. Sure enough, after a final update, I had better luck finding businesses. A business can be manually added to Tello by selecting a plus icon and typing in details including the business&#8217;s name and address. </p>

<p>As for rating individual employees, on most occasions, I didn&#8217;t think to ask the name of the person who helped me at the business so I could comment on their service. I did catch the name of a terrific waitress at the Greek restaurant because she signed the bill with a smiley face. In that case, I was able to make a specific comment about an employee, rather than a general comment about the restaurant. I gave Mara a thumbs up and commented she took time to make useful wine suggestions in the midst of a bustling evening with every table filled. The more I used Tello, the more I started to notice employees&#8217; names.</p>
<p>After using Tello over a period of time, each user builds up a personalized page of ratings, which is helpful for remembering which places are worth a return visit and which ones to avoid. Any Tello rating is, by default, instantly shared on the Tello.com site as well as to users of the app; it can be posted out to Facebook and Twitter in the same step.</p>
<p>Tello aspires to be more than the destination where happy customers go to cheer or wronged customers go to whine. An option on the screen where ratings comments are entered lets users request a reply from a business if they had a bad experience. When someone selects this option, Tello contacts the user via email and asks how he or she wants to be contacted by the business—email or phone—so the business has a chance to fix things. </p>
<p>Starting this spring, Tello plans to roll out new features aimed at businesses that will allow them to claim their business on Tello by going through a verification process. They will then be automatically notified of bad experiences so they can decide how to handle a customer&#8217;s problems. And in the future, customers who rate businesses might be able to receive coupons. </p>
<p>Another new feature due out this spring will let businesses add lists of employees for Tello users to see, which may help them remember who served them or how to spell an employee&#8217;s name. Employees who receive good ratings could be acknowledged and rewarded by their employers, motivating them to work harder.</p>
<p>Though Tello is just getting started, it could be an incredibly helpful service through which satisfied customers get to tell friends about their experiences—or disappointed customers get to complain with a chance of actually being heard. Just know that Tello&#8217;s thumbs up or thumbs down ratings don&#8217;t allow for much ambiguity. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today <a href="http://www.google.com/latitude">Google Latitude</a> will give users the ability to share their location with friends and strangers by &#8220;<a href="http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2011/02/check-in-with-google-latitude.html">checking in</a>&#8221; to a particular establishment.</p>
<p>Many of the major location-based social networks launched in early 2009, including Latitude. But Latitude was different: Instead of asking users to manually check in, it continuously displayed their locations on a map in real time. The specificity of that information meant Latitude was primarily used for location-sharing with close friends and family.</p>
<p>Due in part to Google&#8217;s heft, the service is relatively popular; now available on all the big smartphone platforms, it has 10 million users who participate each month, compared with six million registered users for Foursquare.</p>
<p>Still, in the past year, just about every local-social pundit and competitor has announced a desire to go &#8220;<a href="http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;q=beyond+the+check-in">beyond the check-in</a>.&#8221; In that context, Latitude&#8217;s move to catch up seems oddly timed.</p>
<p>Ken Norton, senior PM for Latitude, justified today&#8217;s change by saying Latitude users have been asking for check-ins. Plus (and this is no small thing), Google is associating check-ins with its Google Places project, which means Latitude now has a business model: Connecting its users to local merchants.</p>
<p>Google is not facilitating Latitude-specific deals yet (as companies like Facebook and Foursquare already do), but Norton said there&#8217;s nothing stopping merchants from giving a discount to people who check in frequently.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/blog_map_mtv_list_friendscheckedin-180x300.png" alt="" title="blog_map_mtv_list_friendscheckedin" width="180" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3089" />What&#8217;s different about Latitude&#8217;s version of check-ins? There are a few innovative tweaks that some users may prefer. Google will automatically detect when users are stationary in a place it considers a business, and send them a notification asking if they want to check in.</p>
<p>Also, (with user permission) Latitude supports automatic check-ins for common venues, as well as supporting &#8220;checking out&#8221; of a place when the users&#8217; location indicates they&#8217;ve left the building.</p>
<p>However, users cannot add locations; so, for instance, they can&#8217;t check into their homes (unless their homes are already businesses with Place pages).</p>
<p>And while Latitude is hopping on the trend, how about a sprinkle of gamification! Based on their participation, users can qualify to be a &#8220;Regular,&#8221; &#8220;VIP&#8221; or &#8220;Guru&#8221; of a specific establishment. However, there is no leaderboard or public acknowledgment of such users, yet.</p>
<p>Users can publish their locations to their public-facing Google Profile, if they want to share beyond their Latitude friend network. It&#8217;s expected that Google will increasingly include these public profiles in new social product launches.</p>
<p>The capability to check in on Latitude is only available on Android to start (through the new Google Maps 5.1 app), but should be coming to the BlackBerry, Symbian and iPhone, said Norton.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook is testing a new feature called Buy With Friends to give users social incentives to increase their purchases of virtual goods from games on its platform, said Deb Liu, Facebook commerce product marketing manager, at the Inside Social Apps conference in San Francisco today.</p>
<p>The program will encourage users to purchase virtual goods that their friends have already bought.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/FacebookCredits.png" alt="" title="FacebookCredits" width="119" height="121" class="alignright size-full wp-image-2772" />Speaking to an audience of application developers who are concerned about Facebook&#8217;s move to<a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110124/facebook-credits-will-be-mandatory-payment-platform-starting-july-1/"> require developers to use its Facebook Credits virtual currency system</a>, Liu mentioned Buy With Friends as an example of a program Facebook is providing that will help developers make more money.</p>
<p>Liu said Buy With Friends gives developers tools to help users share their in-game purchases. In testing so far, she said &#8220;more than 50 percent of users elected to share a purchase.&#8221; As an example, after a friend has made and shared a purchase, a player might see a message that says, &#8220;Your friend has unlocked this deal for you&#8211;get 40 percent off this special monster food,&#8221; Liu said.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve argued in the past that <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101229/web-commerce-isnt-really-social-yet/">much of what we call &#8220;social commerce&#8221; isn&#8217;t very social yet</a>, but this seems like an example of a product that actually deserves that label.</p>
<p>Facebook is also offering incentives, including promotion and premium ad targeting, to developers who use Facebook Credits as their in-game currency.</p>
<p>Facebook Credits are used by some 150 developers, but many of them elect to also use their own branded currency so as not to be locked into the Facebook system. This introduces a silly amount of complexity, with users often having to convert their real-world money into Facebook Credits into in-game currency, all at different exchange rates.</p>
<p>Liu also said that Facebook is testing a feature that improves users&#8217; ability to purchase additional credits without leaving the game environment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Earlier this month, I had a lot of nervous energy and a bunch of spare time on my hands, since my husband was in the hospital for an unusually complicated appendectomy. He&#8217;s much better now, but I haven&#8217;t fully recovered, because I picked up a bad case of addiction to <a href="http://cityville.com">CityVille</a>, the newly released social game from Zynga.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/CityVillemayor.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1430" title="CityVillemayor" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/CityVillemayor-275x186.png" alt="" width="275" height="186" /></a></p>
<p>CityVille is the perfect hospital waiting-room activity. You click to create buildings and plant crops, click to harvest them and collect money from your shops, click to visit your friends&#8217; cities and help them do the same things.</p>
<p>Unlike in a real city, everything you can possibly accomplish in the game is good. You receive money, goods, reputation points, energy and random bonus prizes constantly.</p>
<p>Most of these are useful, but some of them are not. For instance, I currently have a stock of 22 virtual danishes received as bonuses from my in-game coffee shop, and no way to spend them.</p>
<p>Among the early adopter types I know in the tech industry, there&#8217;s a sense that casual gaming on Facebook serves an entirely different demographic from their own. The thinking is that games from Zynga and the like replace relatively mindless activities like watching soap operas.</p>
<p>But as someone who has just reorganized her virtual retail shops to be surrounded by virtual trees, so as to accumulate more virtual bonus points, I can see how social gaming&#8211;especially as it gets more social&#8211;might appeal to the desire for mindless diversions in all of us.</p>
<p>And, I began to get an answer to a question I am asked a lot: Why are so many people playing these seemingly meaningless games?</p>
<p>CityVille is Zynga&#8217;s latest attempt to extend the dominance of its breakout social game FarmVille, which has long been the most popular such diversion on Facebook.</p>
<p>Of all of Zynga&#8217;s games, CityVille has been <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101117/zynga-chooses-facebook-yet-again-for-exclusive-launch-of-next-game-cityville/">heralded</a> as the most social to date, with new features such as a franchise system that allows users to actually participate in the building of their friends&#8217; cities. Personally, I&#8217;ve never gotten into FarmVille, although it&#8217;s obviously quite addictive as well and hugely popular.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/CityVille-scene.png"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/CityVille-scene-275x142.png" alt="" title="CityVille scene" width="275" height="142" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1551" /></a></p>
<p>Chalk it up to the new social features, the slightly less awkward and cutesy 3-D graphics, or a momentary openness to mindless diversion on my part, but CityVille is the only Facebook game that&#8217;s truly sucked me in so far.</p>
<p>Zynga says CityVille is its <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101206/cityville-gets-290000-residents-in-first-day/?mod=ATD_search">fastest-growing</a> <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2010/12/15/fastest-growing-game-in-history-zyngas-cityville-hits-26m-daily-players-in-12-days/">game ever</a>. According to <a href="http://www.appdata.com/leaderboard/apps?list_select=apps&amp;metric_select=mau&amp;start_date[month]=12&amp;start_date[day]=20&amp;start_date[year]=2010&amp;fanbase=0&amp;genre_id=Select+category">AppData</a>, CityVille has 54 million monthly active users, for second place overall (and only two million behind FarmVille).</p>
<p>There are no consequences in CityVille and there is no strategy. There&#8217;s also no winning (rather, as in FarmVille, an endlessly extending horizon of tasks to complete).</p>
<p>The worst thing that can happen is a crop can wither or you can allocate your &#8220;energy&#8221; to collecting rent and not have enough to empty the cash registers at your stores.</p>
<p>But, not to worry&#8211;come back in five minutes and there&#8217;s another unit of energy waiting for you.</p>
<p>CityVille is satisfying on a superficial level that I hadn&#8217;t thought possible. It&#8217;s not even like Angry Birds, my former casual game of choice, which breaks all sorts of age and language barriers in its simplicity, but still requires you to position the slingshot correctly and think through the physics of the various projectiles.</p>
<p>In CityVille, all you do is click, click, <em>click</em>.</p>
<p>Zynga seems to want three things from users: Their time, their money and their recruitment of their friends. As for time, I&#8217;ve given plenty of it, although you usually run out of stuff to do about 15 minutes into any one session (Zynga wouldn&#8217;t want game play to be a burden or feel too complicated).</p>
<p>But I&#8217;m not sure my obsession is paying off for Zynga. I&#8217;ve spent a grand total of 50 cents on the game. That&#8217;s because I wanted to spend the 15 Facebook credits I&#8217;d gotten as part of a launch promotion, but Zynga had a minimum purchase of 20 credits. Coughing up two quarters got me the difference&#8211;and it also hooked up my Facebook account to my PayPal account for the first time.</p>
<p>I currently have 20 CityVille &#8220;neighbors.&#8221; They are Facebook connections from all different parts of my life, including high school friends, tech industry people and fellow reporters. We get credits for heading over to each other&#8217;s cities and helping out, accepting roles at each other&#8217;s city halls and other municipal buildings and setting up franchises in each other&#8217;s cities and resupplying them.</p>

<p>And Zynga constantly harasses us to post on our own or other people&#8217;s Facebook walls to ask them for in-game gifts and brag about in-game achievements.</p>
<p>Conscious of polluting other people&#8217;s walls and admitting to people how much CityVille I play, I usually decline all the offers to broadcast my CityVille needs and accomplishments. But it&#8217;s clear Zynga could stand to add even more communication channels if it wanted to; a friend recently emailed me off-game to ask if I could hurry up and send him a CityVille zoning permit.</p>
<p>I get the sense most of my particular set of neighbors haven&#8217;t given Zynga a lot of cash for virtual goods, considering our cities are growing at about the same rate and I see them on there at least once a day helping tend to my crops and resupplying their franchises. There are no in-game advertisements.</p>
<p>A few of my neighbors, however, have accumulated premium goodies galore. A certain Facebook exec&#8217;s city is decorated with paid-for doodads like a basketball court, tennis court and bronze statue&#8211;but I imagine it&#8217;s not too hard for him, of all people, to stock up on Facebook credits.</p>
<p>A particular start-up CEO who&#8217;s my virtual neighbor seems to play on an hourly basis. He has already hit level 35. You know that somewhere a Zynga engineer is scurrying to create more tasks and content to add more levels to keep up with him and other addicts.</p>
<p>And only one of my neighbors appears to have never returned to the game after setting up her initial city.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, my own city keeps on growing. I&#8217;m currently at level 26. I&#8217;m now the mayor of my city and considering a run for governor.</p>
<p>But, now that I&#8217;m back from the hospital, I&#8217;d honestly really like to stop playing this game and let the healing begin.</p>
<p><strong>Update</strong>: <em>Since I first wrote a draft of this post on Sunday CityVille added 10 million users. I&#8217;ve updated the stats as of Wednesday morning. </em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thanks to the popularity of Facebook, it&#8217;s easy to assume that all social networks are designed primarily to connect friends with one another. But many of these networks—think Twitter, Yelp and  LinkedIn—aren&#8217;t focused on that. Instead, they provide information from strangers, business contacts and group postings on a variety of topics. Myspace is now also shifting in this direction after Facebook decisively overtook it as the most popular social network.</p>
<p>Last month, the company rolled out a revamped version of Myspace, which is owned by News Corp., publisher of the Wall Street Journal. I&#8217;ve been testing it to see what has changed and if it&#8217;s worth using. Its interface is cleaner than the old version of Myspace and I found it easy to navigate. It&#8217;s also inviting for non-members or people who&#8217;ve long-since given up on Myspace. But I can&#8217;t definitely say I like it enough to add it to my large list of social networks.</p>

<p>Step one of this site&#8217;s rehab was a new focus. Myspace (<a href="http://myspace.com">myspace.com</a>) was redesigned to serve as a source of information about entertainment. People who use it can follow five categories—TV, music, movies, celebrities and comedy—that include more than 100,000 topics. News about these topics comes from  sites all over the Web and is arranged on users&#8217; home pages to show loads of information at a glance. A Discovery tab at the top of the page shows content related to trends on Myspace makes suggestions based on a user&#8217;s preferences and taste. A spokesman said the Myspace topics can be expanded, but for now, if you&#8217;re fonder of, say, books, theater or hard news, Myspace won&#8217;t be a good fit. </p>
<p>Step two for Myspace included making nice with its old competitor. It now works with Facebook Connect to pull in people&#8217;s Facebook &#8220;likes&#8221; and interests, which automatically generate customized Myspace pages for new users. </p>
<p>The final step of the Myspace redesign was its emphasis on music. The site still contains one of the largest Web music catalogs that plays full versions of songs for anyone who visits Myspace. New versions of band profile pages look more organized. And all artists with band profiles will have ReverbNation&#8217;s FanReach email product integrated into their profile to help them create targeted email campaigns for fans.</p>
<p>Was Myspace&#8217;s rehabilitation worth the effort? I&#8217;ve been using it for a week and it has taught me a lot more than I knew about things I care about. I had no idea that one of my favorite TV shows, TNT&#8217;s &#8220;The Closer,&#8221; recently said that 2011 would be its last season. Nor did I know that Anthony Bourdain blogs about his role as a judge on &#8220;Top Chef Masters.&#8221; These items and others appeared on my Home page after I performed the process that the Myspace site refers to as a Facebook Mashup.</p>
<p>The Facebook Mashup does a few things automatically for you, in addition to generating a Myspace page filled with topic-related news. A playlist is created in the Music section of your page that contains artists whom you &#8220;like&#8221; on Facebook (or whom you indicated while setting up an account). And the Videos section of the Myspace page will reflect your tastes in a list of Followed Channels related to your Facebook preferences.</p>
<p>The Home page can be seen in one of three views—List, Grid or Play—and icons at the top of the screen let users toggle among  these views. My favorite was Grid View in the Full Grid View format, visible by clicking a small box at the top of the page. </p>
<p>Some of the content displayed on my Home page was mixed up. For example, a tile representing the story about Mr. Bourdain&#8217;s blog (originally posted on <a href="http://Celebrifi.com">Celebrifi.com</a>) displayed with it a photo of actor Tom Cruise, who wasn&#8217;t mentioned in that post. Another Tom, Tom Colicchio, chef and a &#8220;Top Chef Masters&#8221; judge, was mentioned in the post, but that doesn&#8217;t explain the mix-up. </p>
<p>Anything that falls into the 100,000 plus topics of Myspace&#8217;s realm can be found via a search box in the top right corner of the page, but this box is confusingly labeled, &#8220;Search People.&#8221; Though Myspace still allows users to search for and friend one another, the label on this search box is puzzling, given the greater reach of the site. </p>
<p>You can watch video content from <a href="http://Hulu.com">Hulu.com</a> (of which News Corp. is part owner) without jumping to a new page. And videos also come from other sources like TMZ and the NFL.</p>
<p>Users can earn recognition badges—icons that show up on their page—for their involvement on Myspace, and can become curators of topics, awarded on the basis of users&#8217; involvement and how much other people respond to their activity. </p>
<p>This week, a Myspace mobile app was launched in Apple&#8217;s App Store, and an Android app is due out next year.</p>
<p>Myspace successfully reinvented itself in a way that could very well get people using it again, but Facebook&#8217;s more personalized social network may be more valuable than a rich library of entertainment content.</p>

This can happen the very first time a user visits a site&#8211;so if you&#8217;re new to Clicker, but are currently logged in through your browser to Facebook, Clicker can instantly make recommendations about what you should watch.</p>
<p>The experience of visiting a new site that already knows who you are can be a bit unnerving, which is why Facebook is rolling out Instant Personalization slowly and carefully. It&#8217;s one of the company&#8217;s more aggressive products on the privacy front. Other partners include Rotten Tomatoes, Yelp and Pandora.</p>
<p>San Francisco-based Clicker indexes more than one million shows and movies available on the Web.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ATDoodle-275x250.jpg" alt="" title="Oodle launches new classified ads on Facebook" width="275" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-675" />San Mateo, Calif.-based Oodle, which is the exclusive provider of classified ads on the Facebook Marketplace, is revamping the way it does business to create an even tighter bond with the social network.</p>
<p>The company, which launched in April 2005, originally set out to aggregate classified ads from various media outlets to list on its own site, but Craig Donato, founder and CEO of <a href="http://www.oodle.com">Oodle</a>, said Facebook has now become bigger and is generating 80 percent of its traffic.</p>
<p>Just like with newspaper classifieds or listings on Craigslist, users can post items they want to sell or buy on Oodle or the <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/marketplace">Facebook Marketplace</a>. Many Facebook users may recognize it from the weekly email the service sends out detailing what items are for sale in their extended friend groups.</p>
<p>Donato said Facebook has become the ideal intermediary to make connections for selling vs. Craiglist, which has gained a reputation for sketchy, or just flaky, behavior among its anonymous users.</p>
<p>&#8220;It’s people not showing up, or they show up and say they&#8217;ll give you half price. But once we start to introduce an identity, and show how you are connected through mutual friends, or the same college, it introduces social norms. It&#8217;s people acting like real people.&#8221;</p>
<p>In this scenario, Donato thinks it could even encourage people to recycle items&#8211;as opposed to making a profit off them.</p>
<p>Oodle commissioned a survey, which was conducted by Harris Interactive, that found 69 that percent of U.S. adults said they’d rather give away or share unneeded items with friends or acquaintances rather then sell them. In the new format, users can share a “want ad” that&#8217;s visible to friends.</p>
<p>To that end, Oodle is mostly scrapping its original business in favor of increasing its relationship with the social network.</p>
<p>It will no longer seek new deals with media outlets, and will push users on Oodle.com to sign up using Facebook Connect. It&#8217;s also redesigning the way the listings look, and changing the way emails are designed.</p>
<p>Is it too much reliance on Facebook?</p>
<p>Donato doesn&#8217;t think so: &#8220;It is the social fabric of the Internet. Facebook has established a social layer and we want to fully embrace it.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most significant changes in Facebook&#8217;s profile page redesign this week was to highlight images&#8211;both pictures of users and pictures of their friends. As part of that, users who upgraded to the new profile (more info <a href="http://www.facebook.com/about/profile/">here</a>) now have a strip of their five most recently tagged photos running right under their basic information.</p>
<p>The crucial feature of Facebook photos is that, by default, friends can tag users in pictures without the users confirming that the pictures are actually of them. So with the new layout, friends can decide what pictures show at the top of a person&#8217;s profile. And for the more creative, they have five concatenated pictures in which to do so.</p>
<p>Facebook users are already having fun with this option, pranking each other to show inappropriate pictures and silly sequences of words. BuzzFeed ran an <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/dinoi/i-just-hi-jacked-a-co-workers-new-fb-profile-dj0">NSFW example of this</a> earlier this week, with one of its users apparently pulling the suggested prank on the Facebook of a fellow named Trent Reznor.</p>
<p>Users worried about their profiles being hijacked for everyone to see can change their privacy settings. (For instance, a user can limit who is allowed to see other people&#8217;s photos she is tagged in.)</p>

<p>A lot of my reluctance has to with the hassle of transferring the pictures to my PC before uploading them to a photo-sharing website or Facebook. Sure, I can use my phone to directly post them online, but I like to use photo-editing software on my computer to touch up the images. As a result, photos from a May birthday party won&#8217;t end up on my Facebook page until November. </p>
<p>With sophisticated cameras going into smartphones—including the 5-megapixel, high-dynamic range shooter found in Apple Inc.&#8217;s iPhone 4 and  the professional-grade, 12-megapixel Carl Zeiss lens in Nokia Corp.&#8217;s N8—more people are leaning on their handsets for all sorts of photo opportunities. </p>
<p>Application developers haven&#8217;t ignored the trend. A large number of mobile programs recently have cropped up allowing you to tweak photos, add eye-popping filters, tag them with information about subject and location, and then post them on social-networking sites. </p>

<p>I recently attended a holiday dinner with friends, giving me an opportunity to test some of these mobile photo-editing and photo-sharing apps: picplz, Instagram, Hipstamatic, Path and Camera Fun Pro. All five are either free or relatively inexpensive.</p>
<p>Instagram, a free app launched by Burbn Inc. in October for the iPhone, is among the most straightforward. After taking a photo, you are  given a choice of a dozen filters that give the picture a retro twinge. Some of the photos shot while sitting in an Italian wine bar looked like something from a movie set.</p>
<p>After choosing your filter, you have the choice of adding a caption. You can add the location as well, although it requires the phone to have a working GPS or network connection, so you can&#8217;t get the information while on a subway or in a dead zone. </p>
<p>The program gives you an option to upload the photo to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, Foursquare or any combination of the social-networking sites. </p>
<p>I also liked the feed Instagram creates to show you all the photos you&#8217;ve taken, giving you a nice timeline of your shots. There is also a section devoted to the most popular photos taken from all Instagram users, giving me some new ideas. </p>
<p>Picplz, another free app, available on iPhones and smartphones using Google Inc.&#8217;s Android software, gives you the same capabilities, but only half the number of filters. As a result, I found myself using Instagram more frequently. </p>
<p>A popular app is Hipstamatic ($1.99) from Synthetic Corp., which allows your iPhone to mimic an old-fashioned camera, complete with a virtual old-fashioned case with swappable lenses and flash bulbs on the front, and a small viewfinder on the back. There are several options for types of film, allowing for a large number of different combinations.</p>

<p>While I appreciated the options, I also was a little overwhelmed. The app isn&#8217;t ideal for spontaneous moments, because you have to choose the film, lens and type of flash bulb (or whether to have flash at all) before taking your shot. The costs for the app could add up if you add virtual accessories: types of film, lenses, flashbulbs and camera case. Each feature retails for an additional 99 cents. </p>
<p>Hipstamtic has been around for nearly a year, but in September, Synthetic added the capability to order print versions of photos. The packs of photos range between $4.99 and $9.99, depending on the print size. I didn&#8217;t get a chance to test out the service, but the company says it has won over many repeat customers.</p>
<p>A more recent app is personal-photo network program Path, which launched in November for the iPhone. The aim for Path is slightly different from the normal sharing program. Rather than post the picture to Facebook and your entire network, the program will share the photo with 50 friends, which Path Chief Executive Dave Morin says is the maximum number of relationships a human can maintain at any given time. </p>

<p>The initial version of Path, however, required my friends to have the application. My friends ended up receiving an email asking them to sign up for Path, which most promptly ignored. As a result, I wasn&#8217;t sharing my photos with anyone. Mr. Morin says the company will release an update that opens up the program, sending email links to the photos that don&#8217;t require downloading the program. </p>
<p>The app that got the most attention around the dinner table, however, was Camera Fun Pro from SpiceLoop. While it has been available for the iPhone since January, it arrived on Android devices in September. The app, which costs 99 cents, applies a live filter over the camera, allowing you to see what you get before taking the photo. The 19 filters&#8217; effects on photos aren&#8217;t subtle: They implant a bulge, stretch, give a 3-D effect, or tint subjects Avatar-blue. If those aren&#8217;t enough distortion for you, you can go back and layer effects on a photo.</p>
<p>Testing the app out on Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd.&#8217;s Epic 4G, my friends and I especially enjoyed the sketch filter, which makes everything look like it was hand drawn with a pencil. The photos were reminiscent of A-Ha&#8217;s famous music video, which used a similar sketch effect, and had us humming the &#8217;80s pop tune &#8220;Take On Me&#8221; during the meal. </p>

To date, Pulse (for iPad, iPhone and Android) gave users an easily scannable and image-driven view of their favorite RSS feeds. Now, users will also be able to add their Facebook accounts and flip through material posted by their friends.</p>
<p>The social version of Pulse will be available only for iPad for now, and is to be released this afternoon at 3 pm PT.</p>

<p>Palo Alto, Calif.-based Alphonso Labs, which makes Pulse, recently stopped charging for its apps and raised $800,000 in venture funding. CEO Akshay Kothari came up to San Francisco today and showed me the new iPad app.</p>
<p>The new Pulse for iPad gives users three feeds of Facebook information: Friends&#8217; status updates, friends&#8217; shared links and a historial look at the user&#8217;s own Facebook wall. In keeping with Pulse&#8217;s design, items are image driven and easily swipe-able, and expand into a second panel when users tap on them (see screenshots). Users can add comments or &#8220;Like&#8221; statuses and shared links as they would on Facebook, but this is more of an alternate way to consume content than a full-featured Facebook client.</p>
<p>As with other content feeds, Pulse caches the 25 most recent Facebook updates in each category, so a user who goes somewhere without Internet access could continue to read the content there.</p>
<p>As Alphonso grows from being some young folks with an interesting design approach into a real company, it is exploring closer relationships with publishers like the Huffington Post. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want to be a company that makes a news reader,&#8221; said Kothari. &#8220;We want to help people discover awesome content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kothari added that with the influx of new users since Pulse went free two weeks ago, Alphonso is looking to improve content discovery by mining user data to show a &#8220;most-emailed&#8221; story list across all feeds.</p>
<p>He said his aim is to get away from the hierarchical structure of Web sites&#8211;where one must return to the homepage before moving on&#8211;and help people scan quickly through potential reading material. Ultimately, Kothari said, recommendations will be done through a balanced combination of machine and social factors.</p>

<p>While there are many services around, I&#8217;ll just touch on a handful of them, including some that take advantage of social networking and group buying.</p>

<p>Bing, Microsoft&#8217;s search engine, is jumping into the wish-list action this holiday season with the Bing Shopping List. Starting Wednesday, this feature lets people add items to a saved wish list by simply check-marking an on-screen box in shopping search results. Shopping search results are displayed by clicking the Shopping tab in Bing search results or by selecting Shopping on Bing.com and going from there. Once an item&#8217;s box has been checked, a small, in-browser visual of all items added to the wish list is displayed in the lower left corner of the browser window. Lists are saved between sessions, so you can close your browser and open it another time and work with the same saved list.</p>
<p>In addition to collecting a list of wished-for items, the Bing Shopping List lets people share those lists with their Facebook friends, giving them a chance to see and buy items from someone else&#8217;s wish list. Or people can use Bing Shopping Lists to select just a couple items, share them with the Facebook community, and ask for friends&#8217; opinions about which product is better. Users may get feedback from friends they wouldn&#8217;t otherwise know were experts in certain areas.</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman said the impetus for this came from trends the company saw taking place on the Web—specifically, people using Facebook to solicit opinions about what to buy and to tell others what they want. </p>
<p>A downside to the Bing Shopping Lists is that they don&#8217;t yet offer a way to share items with only certain people, which might mean sharing a private gift with all your Facebook friends. And you can&#8217;t yet create multiple lists. A way to share items with only certain people and options for create multiple lists are on the product road map for next year, according to a company spokesman.</p>
<p>Speaking of social networks, Sears is taking a unique approach to the group-buying concept with Wish Together, a program launched in mid-November. With Wish Together, Sears puts at least one new item on its Facebook page (facebook.com/sears) each day. If enough people click on the item&#8217;s &#8220;Like&#8221; button before a certain time, a steep discount on the item becomes unlocked, like a diamond necklace that originally cost $285 will cost $100 at its Wish Price if it gets the required 200 &#8220;likes.&#8221; People can see the number of necessary &#8220;Likes&#8221; and time remaining (down to the second) displayed on the item&#8217;s Wish Together Facebook page.Once a Wish Together deal is unlocked, it&#8217;s available to everyone—not just those who originally &#8220;liked&#8221; it. But those who &#8220;liked&#8221; the item get an email notification from Facebook as soon as the deal is unlocked so they can buy it while supplies last. </p>

Bing is jumping into the wish-list action this holiday season with the Bing Shopping List</div>
<p>The tried and true Amazon Wish List, which has been around for 11 years, can be used to add wish-list items from any website, not just Amazon.com. This works using the site&#8217;s Universal Wish List. It can be set up by dragging an &#8220;Add to Wishlist&#8221; bookmark (<a href="http://3.ly/G82n">http://3.ly/G82n</a>) into your browser&#8217;s bookmark bar. Then you just click the bookmark whenever you&#8217;re on the specific Web page of an item you&#8217;d like to add to your Wish List. A small pop-up menu lets users designate a specific Amazon Wish List or add their own notes about an item. Universal Wish List browser extensions, or shortcuts built right into a Web browser, are available for Google&#8217;s Chrome, Apple&#8217;s Safari and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser. Some online retailers like <a href="http://ModCloth.com">ModCloth.com</a>, save you a step by offering &#8220;Add To Amazon Wish List&#8221; buttons right on their websites. Amazon Wish Lists can be shared to friends through Facebook or Twitter using a link on the list&#8217;s webpage. </p>
<p>There are many Facebook apps for creating wish lists and sharing them with Facebook friends. I tried a couple apps, including a basic one called Fulfill My Wishlist (<a href="http://3.ly/3u3d">http://3.ly/3u3d</a>). It let me search a shopping portal (that uses Google Shopping in the background) for items to add to my wish list, or let me copy and paste a link for any item to appear in my list. A notes section for each item allows room for describing details like preferred size or style. This list can be emailed to friends or viewed through the Facebook app by friends who use it. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;re planning to go in on buying a pricey gift with several other people, a group-gift option like eBay&#8217;s might be the right tool for you. EBay introduced its Group Gifts feature (<a href="http://groupgifts.ebay.com">groupgifts.ebay.com</a>) in November. It lets several people pool their money to buy one item without one person chasing down those who owe money.</p>
<p>One person chooses an eBay item and selects the Buy It Now option (auction prices aren&#8217;t applicable when you need to tell the group how much they&#8217;ll definitely owe). The initiator tells the group how much he or she will pay and then shares the item with others via email, Facebook or Twitter, in hopes of getting contributions. A PayPal account is required for at least one person in the group to ultimately pay for the item, but gift contributors can chip in using credit or debit cards, and they can add their own notes to a gift. </p>
<p>Thanks to technology, there are many ways to direct your friends and family toward exactly what you want for the holidays, taking much of the guesswork out of giving and receiving this year. </p>

<p>The idea behind the day is to encourage people to take stock of their ballooning Facebook friend lists and to cull the marginal folks. Kimmel has been pushing the idea on his ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” this month, including even a theme song from country singers Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker. The idea seems to have some resonance with people, with “unfriend” turning into a trending topic on Twitter earlier on Wednesday.</p>
<p>In an interview Wednesday with the WSJ’s Video Network’s Simon Constable (see below), Kimmel said, “it just seemed to me that people are wasting a lot of time on Facebook talking to people or catching up with people they don’t want to catch up with.”</p>
<p>He said he actually has just 10 to 12 real friends. Most people on Facebook are “annoying,” he said. “No one needs to know what television show you’re watching or what you just ate, or if you’re feeling hungy, or tired or anything. … Share a little bit less, I think is the message here. For those who have Facebook, whittle it down to the people you really talk to.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook has called the press to yet another launch event, this time in San Francisco for a new Facebook email system. Luckily, they brought their own cafeteria chairs so our butts will feel right at home after a <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101115/hey-facebook-this-launch-better-not-be-boring/">long summer of launches</a> at the company&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., office.</p>
<p>At the St. Regis hotel in San Francisco, Mark Zuckerberg says young people say email is too slow. They prefer Facebook or SMS.</p>
<p>Zuck: IM or SMS are much simpler, and people want lighter-weight things that they can use all over the place. So we need&#8230;a modern messaging system.</p>
<p>350 million people actively use messaging on Facebook, in part because it&#8217;s really simple. Four billion messages are sent per day. This is &#8220;private, private sharing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Next-generation messaging would be: seamless, informal, immediate, personal, simple, minimal and short. (Those are a lot of synonyms, no?)</p>
<p>&#8220;This is not email. Email is one way that people will use this system, but it&#8217;s not even the primary way we think they will use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now a three-panel slide is up showing the key topics of the announcement&#8211;&#8221;seamless messaging,&#8221; &#8220;conversation history&#8221; and &#8220;social inbox.&#8221; Zuckerberg promises, &#8220;We can do some really good filtering for you to make sure you only see messages you really care about.&#8221;</p>
<p>Zuck brings on Andrew Bosworth to demo the product.</p>
<p>So this is actually a relaunch of the &#8220;Messages&#8221; tool. Not email-specific. Takes all correspondence between two friends and puts them in one place.</p>
<p>Everyone gets an @facebook.com email address with their username. &#8220;As much as we&#8217;re providing an email address, the system&#8217;s not email,&#8221; says Boz&#8211;more like instant messaging.</p>
<p>Boz uses convo about dinner plans as an example, with messaging across different platforms, including IM on Facebook, email, iPhone notifications, etc. The example restaurant is Piccino in San Francisco, where, fun fact, I was for a short time the Foursquare mayor. No longer though.</p>
<p>Integrates with Jabber, IMAP and one more I missed. (Sorry, first time liveblogging with this tool!)</p>
<p>Boz shows the history of Facebook messages with his girlfriend of the last four years. But doesn&#8217;t include their instant messages and other communication. Individual messages may not be profound, but collectively they provide a narrative about someone I care about, says Boz.</p>
<p>Facebook rebuilt infrastructure for this project, because it&#8217;s especially important that messages don&#8217;t get lost.</p>
<p>Instead of Cassandra (which FB created for email search and then open sourced), the company chose something new: HBase. They also used Haystack, Thrift, ZooKeeper and memcache.</p>
<p>This is the biggest engineering team Facebook has ever put together for a launch&#8211;15 people, Boz says.</p>
<p>Users have three categories: 1) Messages: Conversations with actual people. 2) Other: Email lists and the like. And 3) Junk.</p>
<p>The big idea is &#8220;picking up where you left off&#8221; no matter what device or medium.</p>
<p>This project has been in the works for the last 15 months.</p>
<p>Zuck: &#8220;This is not an email killer. This is a messaging system that includes email as a part of it. We don&#8217;t expect anyone to wake up tomorrow and say, I&#8217;m going to shut down my Yahoo account or my Gmail account and switch to Facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>(Read: You silly press, we&#8217;re not competing with Gmail, we&#8217;re bigger than Gmail!)</p>
<p>Rolling out slowly over the next few months, starting with an invite system (ha! how Gmail!).</p>
<p>Oh, about IMAP: No support yet, so users can&#8217;t synch with other email systems. But Facebook wants to add later.</p>
<p>Interesting: Facebook messages won&#8217;t have subject lines. You just have a single messaging history with each person.</p>
<p>If you have been interacting with someone through email, then we&#8217;ll send replies back to email. You can indicate that you want a message to go directly to their phone. If you&#8217;re online, you get a message as an IM.</p>
<p>Boz: This is the end of &#8220;BRB&#8221; or &#8220;GTG.&#8221; Follows you wherever you go. (Sounds ominous when you say it like that.)</p>
<p>Question from audience: Will you add voice or video?</p>
<p>Zuck: For now only SMS, IM, email and FB messages&#8211;all are text. &#8220;We think this is a pretty big step by itself, and one we just wanted to take before we get started on the next set of things.&#8221;</p>
<p>Question from audience: Will you have contextual ads?</p>
<p>Zuck: Yes, ads work the same as on the rest of Facebook, but not targeted specific to content in a message.</p>
<p>Zuck on Gmail competition: &#8220;They have a great product. Email is still really important to a lot of people. If we build a great product that people want to use, then people will use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Question from audience: Can users go off the record like in Gmail?</p>
<p>Boz: Users can delete any message.</p>
<p>Zuck: Off the record like in IM doesn&#8217;t make sense because users may be receiving messages in a different way than you send them. If someone gets something in email instead of IM it would be unnatural to have it off the record.</p>
<p>Question: How will this treat communication with people who are not on Facebook?</p>
<p>Boz: You can communicate with whoever you want to, and will have access to all that history of the conversation.</p>
<p>Zuck: If you&#8217;re not a part of the FB system and outside the social graph, your emails to FB users will go into &#8220;Other&#8221; folder to start off with, rather than the main. Once the recipient says you&#8217;re an important person, you&#8217;ll go into the main folder.</p>
<p>Question: What about silly joke emails from your mom? Can you filter those?</p>
<p>Zuck: There&#8217;s only one thread with every person.</p>
<p>Question: What about Facebook employee email addresses?</p>
<p>Zuck: &#8220;After a long discussion, the Farm Bureau has agreed to give us fb.com. And in the terms of that we have agreed not to sell farm subsidies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook hasn&#8217;t mentioned this, but Microsoft just emailed to make sure people know they&#8217;re involved.</p>
<p>&#8220;As part of Facebook’s new messaging system: http://apps.facebook.com/facebooklive/ &#8211;Microsoft is integrating the Office experience. Over the coming months, customers will be able to access and share Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents as attachments to their Facebook messages. Sharing new ideas, key points of inspiration and important information just got easier&#8211;even when the need to access or share that content strikes in the middle of your latest status update.&#8221;</p>
<p>Question: Can you fill in the blanks of associating email addresses with Facebook friends?</p>
<p>Boz: Not yet, but it&#8217;s imaginable.</p>
<p>(Uh-oh&#8211;how is this going to work when people have multiple contacts for themselves?)</p>
<p>Question: Storage?</p>
<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re a good user, you have no concern. For people who try to find limits, they will find them.&#8221; Another ominous comment from Boz.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook on Monday <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101112/would-facebook-email-gmail-google-me/">plans</a> to launch an email service for its users at a press event in San Francisco.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-353" title="Zuckerbergdemo" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/Zuckerbergdemo-e1289811865442-275x190.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="190" />The young company has really gotten way too into these show-and-tell events. The formula is down pat: The usual crowd of tech bloggers and mainstream media types, plus some partners, show up at Facebook&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., office park and wait around for an awkward amount of time. Mark Zuckerberg walks up to the front of the company cafeteria and gives unscripted remarks about how great a few new products are. Product managers come demo them, questions are asked, lunch is served.</p>
<p>This time, at least, the Facebook product launch is in San Francisco, where the Web 2.0 Summit kicks off a little later in the day. (Google CEO Eric Schmidt goes on stage a couple hours after the Facebook event ends.)</p>
<p>Certainly, worse things could happen to me than having to write about a new Facebook product. But if the company wants to make such a big deal about these launches, it should come up with some really great stuff and/or bunch it all together (see: Steve Jobs).</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-298" title="image" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/image-e1289577999411-150x142.png" alt="" width="150" height="142" />It&#8217;s not so much the events; it&#8217;s the products themselves. Facebook&#8217;s last few launches&#8211;coming out of a self-imposed &#8220;lockdown&#8221; period of intense product development and much overtime work by employees&#8211;haven&#8217;t knocked any socks off: A gaming platform redesign, the Places check-in tool, a revised Groups feature, a way for users to download their archive of activity on the service, the Kleiner Perkins sFund launch (which Facebook got roped into hosting), single sign-on for mobile, the beginnings of a deals platform. And there were a few launches made sans event: Facebook Questions, high-resolution photos, etc.</p>
<p>All these are nice enough but, at best, slow-burn products. So far, none of them dramatically impact the way the majority of users value and experience Facebook.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because many of them are fringe products; for instance, Pew says <a href="http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1793/geosocial-location-based-service-foursquare-gowalla">only 4 percent</a> of U.S. online adults have ever shared their location with friends using a mobile device. Surely, Facebook can raise those user numbers, but location-sharing is not a mainstream activity and won&#8217;t be for a long time.</p>
<p>Still, even as I am bitching, I am setting Facebook up to succeed, because email is actually a mainstream product. The company will have to come through on the feature front, but there&#8217;s a good chance tomorrow&#8217;s launch could actually matter.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Silicon Valley is in the midst of a mini photo-sharing app boomlet. We have <a href="http://instagr.am/">Instagram</a> (which started adding 100,000 users per week as soon as it launched last month), <a href="http://picplz.com/">Picplz</a> (which beat out Instagram to get a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101110/no-its-not-instagram-photo-sharing-app-picplz-raises-5-million/">Series A</a> round with their shared investor, Andreessen Horowitz) and as of tonight <a href="https://www.path.com/">Path</a>, from former Facebook exec Dave Morin.</p>

<p>All three companies make mobile apps (primarily on the iPhone) that allow users to take and immediately share images with friends. It seems kind of simple and mundane, but all these smart people seem to think photo-sharing is the future.</p>
<p>Morin and Path are the most convincing about there being a larger idea behind what they&#8217;re doing. San Francisco-based Path is stubbornly focused on close personal connections&#8211;a.k.a. real friends.</p>
<p>Unlike every other social site, where there&#8217;s an implicit pressure to collect as many friends and followers as you can (and at the same time increase the site&#8217;s user numbers), Path is only for the people you really know and trust.</p>
<p>In order to force and foster that kind of sharing, Morin&#8217;s team has left out many of the social Web features we&#8217;re used to. Users can do only two things on Path: Share photos and view them.</p>
<p>There are no reciprocal friend relationships, no likes or comments, no fun photo-editing filters, no publishing photos to services like Facebook and Flickr, no editing something after you post and no global user search (you have to know the email or phone number for anyone you want to add).</p>
<p>And there are additional restrictions. Users can only ever share with a maximum of 50 people (though they can follow more than 50 people, if invited). Every single post has its own privacy settings&#8211;you can share with either only the people tagged in it, or only your share list. If you get sick of someone who&#8217;s sharing with you, you can &#8220;pause&#8221; that person until further notice. Users who don&#8217;t have iPhones can view photos on the Web.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/IMG_0626-200x300.jpg" alt="" title="IMG_0626" width="200" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-330" />The most interesting feature for me is that users see which of their contacts have viewed any one photo. So on Path, you can&#8217;t lurk in peace. People know when you&#8217;ve seen their posts. This might be a little creepy, but it also could cut down on those annoying awkward conversations that sometimes happen when you&#8217;ve seen someone post about something online and then they start telling you about it in person.</p>
<p>Photos are tagged with the location where they&#8217;re taken automatically, and users can add people and tags. If someone else takes a picture at that same location, tags that have been previously used near that place recently will be at the top of the list.</p>
<p>The idea is those tags will be used to help users relive their memories stored on the service. So, for instance, someone Morin shares with could retrace his &#8220;path&#8221; of wine tasting in Napa by zooming in on a map of the pictures he posted from California wine country.</p>
<p>But the thing is, if you want to go try Path (which you&#8217;ll be able to do in the U.S. and Canada as of 9 pm PT tonight by going to <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/path/id403639508?mt=8">Apple&#8217;s App Store</a>, and in the rest of the world within a few hours), it&#8217;s going to seem rather empty at first. You&#8217;ll have to seek out friends to share with from scratch&#8211;but even worse, nobody will be sharing with you until they decide to add you.</p>
<p>Unlike just about every other social service, Path is not really viral. At all. So even though it&#8217;s interesting, its numbers are highly unlikely to correspond favorably to those of competitors like Instagram. And after all, how many mobile photo-sharing apps are you really going to use?</p>
<p>&#8220;We really prioritize slow organic growth over hyper-viral growth and going after influencers to build this really steep graph,&#8221; said Morin, who formerly helped lead Facebook Platform and Facebook Connect before leaving the company in January. &#8220;We are building Path to be a 30-year brand.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added, &#8220;Many of the photo-sharing apps are photo-blogging apps and popularity contests. On Path, you should always feel comfortable being yourself.&#8221;</p>
<p>This antiviral stuff almost seems like overkill, but Morin grounds Path&#8217;s feature decisions in the theories of the evolutionary anthropologist Robin Dunbar (known for the oft-cited &#8220;Dunbar&#8217;s Number&#8221; of 150 acquaintances, he also proposes that 40-60 people is the outer bound of our personal networks) and Nobel prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman (who talked about the difference between experience and memory in a <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/daniel_kahneman_the_riddle_of_experience_vs_memory.html">well-received TED Talk</a> on happiness).</p>
<p>If this hyper-personal stuff works, I think Path could potentially create a third major category of social network, distinct from the kind of relationships found on the two current giants, Facebook and Twitter. But let&#8217;s not get too far ahead of ourselves&#8211;and c&#8217;mon Dave, you should really let people comment on and like their friends&#8217; photos.</p>
<p>Path was co-founded by Morin, Shawn Fanning and Dustin Mierau, both formerly of Napster. The staff also includes Mallory Paine, who helped engineer the iPhone photo and camera apps for Apple, and Matt Van Horn, who formerly did business development at Digg. Fanning is chairman and landlord of the company but is working on his own other projects day-to-day.</p>
<p>Path has already raised a jumbo seed round with Index Ventures, First Round Capital, Founders Fund and Betaworks. The company also provided us with an extensive list of individual angel investors: Ron Conway, Kevin Rose, Ashton Kutcher, Keith Rabois, Dustin Moskovitz, Marc Benioff, Gary Vaynerchuk, Steve Anderson, Tim Draper, Joi Ito, Fadi Ghandour, Matt Cohler, Sam Lessin, Bill Randuchel, Karl Jacob, Paul Buchheit, Ruchi Sanghvi, John Couch, Michael Parekh, Claudio Chiuchiarelli, Maurice Werdegar, Don Dodge, and Chris Kelly.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google and Facebook may act like toddlers fighting over a toy, but there is a lot more going on in their recent too-public spat about user emails.</p>
<p>Google publicly <a href="http://www.google.com/mail/help/contacts_export_confirm.html">shamed</a> Facebook this week for not giving its users the option to export the email contacts of their Facebook friends and import them to Gmail. The <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/09/facebook-slaps-google-openness-doesnt-mean-being-open-when-its-convenient/">rapid-fire kerfuffle</a> between the two companies came after private talks about sharing such data had broken down, and is apparently working, with tech industry opinion seeming to side with Google, even though few if any users seem to actually care about the issue. Sooner or later, if users start demanding to own their email lists and complaining about Facebook being evil, it will happen.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/reciprocity.jpg"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/reciprocity-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="reciprocity" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-229" /></a>But the actual battle isn&#8217;t about reciprocity. If it&#8217;s on purely moral grounds, everyone&#8217;s hypocritical here. Facebook has arrangements to <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101109/no-facebook-user-emails-for-google-but-yahoo-and-microsoft-already-have-access/">share user email addresses with Microsoft and Yahoo</a>, and Google has in the past impeded Orkut users from exporting emails to Facebook. The reason this is playing out this way is because of the contentious relationship between Facebook and Google, and Google&#8217;s planned competitor to Facebook, a.k.a. <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100825/say-you-say-google-me-when-will-the-search-giant-get-social-graces/">Google Me</a>.</p>
<p>As a larger question, what captivates me is how much value people are putting on user email addresses. Are our email addresses really the best proxy for who we are?</p>
<p>If you peel back the back-and-forth, the substance of Facebook&#8217;s argument is that Facebook users are on the service because it&#8217;s a social network, not an email application. When you use Facebook, your friends are identified by their (usually real) names, and you hardly ever see their email addresses. From Facebook platform tech lead Mike Vernal&#8217;s <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/09/googles-response-to-facebooks-response-to-googles-facebook-api-ban/#comment-95565131">comment</a> on TechCrunch:</p>
<blockquote><p>Email is different from social networking because in an email application, each person maintains and owns their own address book, whereas in a social network your friends maintain their information and you just maintain a list of friends. Because of this, we think it makes sense for email applications to export email addresses and for social networks to export friend lists.</p></blockquote>
<p>But to Google&#8217;s point, if people want to deactivate their Facebook accounts and/or try another service, they shouldn&#8217;t lose what they&#8217;ve created. When you join a new service, the best way it becomes useful and interesting is to quickly find and invite your existing friends (see: <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101108/welcome-to-networkeffect/">network effects</a>)&#8211;and the best way to do that is to import a list of your email contacts.</p>
<p>The problem is you don&#8217;t own your friends&#8217; email addresses; they do. Email is the only successful example of a decentralized social network.</p>

<p>Facebook has a privacy setting that lets you decide who specifically can view your email address. But that&#8217;s just within the centralized system of Facebook; you don&#8217;t (yet) get to choose where your email address can be shared. Plus, as we all know, Facebook&#8217;s privacy settings can get rather complicated, and both we users and the company change them over time.</p>
<p>Say I have a business contact I don&#8217;t want to share my personal email with, and she goes and exports her Facebook email contacts so she can fill out her Yahoo Mail contact list. Those settings need to carry over. And even if they do, spam and invasions of privacy are pretty much inevitable.</p>
<p>But am I my email address? As someone who&#8217;s very recently changed jobs, I know firsthand that link can be broken. I registered for so many of the sites I use with my old work email, and my whole address book was locked up there too. Now I have to reconstruct those relationships with a new identity. But I can do it. I&#8217;m still myself, after all.</p>
<p>Probably all of you reading this have more than one email address, and often multiple people use the same email address or the same computer. There&#8217;s not a one-to-one link between self and email, and the overlaps are often confusing and annoying.</p>
<p><a href=""http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/SecureID_token_new.jpg"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/SecureID_token_new-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="SecureID_token_new" width="150" height="150" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-240" /></a>Besides email, other options for an identity token might be your phone number, your social security number, your Facebook user name or your fingerprint.</p>
<p>But email seems to be the agreed-upon best proxy for Web services. Companies like <a href="http://www.rapleaf.com/">RapLeaf</a> <a href="http://gigaom.com/2010/10/21/rapleaf-web-startups/">run their businesses</a> on connecting and aggregating information about people based on identifying their valid email addresses (and <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304410504575560243259416072.html?mod=djemalertNEWS">incur concerns</a> about the implications of getting all that data in one place and selling it).</p>
<p>The stakes in this battle are increasingly high. Both Facebook and Google want to be our identity on the Web. I stay logged in to Gmail and Facebook all day from my laptop, and reap the benefits of those services being integrated with other ones, whether it&#8217;s a related service like Google Calendar or a new doodad that I can use Facebook Connect to register for.</p>
<p>Both Facebook and Google are striving to do two things:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Represent us best</strong> by collecting our connections and experiences</li>
<li><strong>Be our token</strong> to bring that identity the rest of the Web</li>
</ul>

<p>So think about where this is going. Facebook last week <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=446167297130">introduced</a> a single-sign-on feature for phones (first on select Android apps and soon iOS). The way this will work is when you open a participating app, you have the option to connect to Facebook and bring your identity and friends with you. So the first time you use the app, it knows you and your context. You can imagine if this were to extend to Facebook&#8217;s Instant Personalization product, and you were to get a phone that out-of-the-box got your Facebook account and then automatically set up your contacts, preferences, apps and anything else you want or need. It&#8217;s powerful stuff.</p>

<p><strong>Background</strong>: Last week, Google <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/04/facebook-google-contacts/">stopped</a> allowing Facebook to help its users find their friends by importing their Gmail contacts list. Google said the move was about data portability and liberation, calling Facebook a &#8220;data dead end&#8221; because it wasn&#8217;t giving its users&#8217; email addresses to Google.</p>
<p>Facebook yesterday found a workaround to re-enable Google contacts importing, and Facebook engineering lead Mike Vernal <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/09/facebook-slaps-google-openness-doesnt-mean-being-open-when-its-convenient/">commented</a> on TechCrunch at length under his own name, charging Google with hypocrisy for disallowing contact importing for Orkut last year and &#8220;limiting user choice.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/import_complete1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-160" title="import_complete1" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/import_complete1-275x109.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="109" /></a></p>
<p>What&#8217;s funny, though, as sources have pointed out to us, is that Facebook actually does allow email importing, specifically to Yahoo Mail and Microsoft&#8217;s Hotmail (we checked AOL mail too, but couldn&#8217;t find it there).</p>
<p>This is no secret; Yahoo <a href="http://www.ymailblog.com/blog/2010/03/facebook-friends-meet-yahoo-contacts/">launched</a> its Facebook email contact importer in March of this year. In a blog post at the time, senior product manager Rick Pal said,</p>
<blockquote><p>Importing from Facebook is super simple&#8230;After you click login, we will authorize your account and begin importing, which may take a minute or two depending on your Internet speed and how many Facebook friends you have.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Update</strong>: <em>Microsoft confirmed through a spokesperson that its Windows Live users can import both Facebook and Gmail contacts, and said some nice stuff about its commitment to customer choice.<br />
</em></p>
<p>Access to user emails isn&#8217;t something Facebook <a href="http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-contact-importer-2010-03">gives just anyone</a>. In fact, only a few partners can hook into them while the rest have to rely on users&#8217; Facebook-formatted information available through Facebook Connect. That includes Google. The difference, according to a source, is that Yahoo and Microsoft asked nicely.</p>

<p>These days, even small &#8220;business-to-business&#8221; concerns like Bill.com are experimenting with social media, perceiving the popular online hangouts as low-cost, easy-to-use venues for attracting new customers and retaining existing ones. But unlike their consumer-focused counterparts&#8211;retailers that sell smartphones, jeans, games and other personal products&#8211;so-called B-to-B businesses seem to be having a harder time connecting with their target audience.</p>
<p>Facebook &#8220;is so consumer dominated that it takes time to find a voice that cuts through what&#8217;s already out there,&#8221; says René Lacerte, founder and chief executive of Bill.com, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sitting in the cubicle next to founder Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook Inc.&#8217;s headquarters is a young executive who is taking on a critical challenge for the world&#8217;s largest social network: making it more social.</p>
<p>Chris Cox, Facebook&#8217;s 28-year-old vice president of product, manages the teams of programmers and designers behind last week&#8217;s unveiling of the social network&#8217;s newest feature&#8211;the ability to sort small groups of friends&#8211;as well as other recent additions like check-ins at real-world places.</p>
<p>In a company filled with often reclusive programmers, Mr. Cox is an extrovert who plays in a reggae band. His top job is deepening Facebook&#8217;s role in the lives of its users while toeing the line on privacy concerns by making the site hew to real-world social norms.<br />
A Stanford-trained software engineer who joined Facebook in 2005 after dropping out of a graduate-degree program, he takes a social approach to designing products. Humans, not computer formulas, Mr. Cox insists, can make Facebook and the Internet more useful.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Internet poses a challenge for authoritarian regimes around the world. But Vietnam&#8217;s leaders think they have figured out a new way to tame it&#8211;by launching their own, Communist-friendly answer to popular social-networking sites like Facebook.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s called go.vn, and state-owned Vietnam Multimedia Corp. launched a trial version on revolutionary hero Ho Chi Minh&#8217;s birthday, May 19. A full version is due to go up at the end of the year. Many of its features will be familiar to anybody versed in tagging, poking and defriending: People can post photos, link to friends and ping messages back and forth online.</p>
<p>The catch is that users have to submit their full names and government-issued identity numbers before they can access the site. Security services monitor websites in Vietnam, whose authoritarian, one-party dictatorship treats dissidents ruthlessly.</p>
