<p>Around the globe, mobile technology is reshaping lives. For the affluent, the smartphone and the tablet have emerged as the dominant means of communication. The introduction of the iPhone six years ago forever changed what was imagined possible, and Apple now faces stiff competition from Google&#8217;s Android and such would-be rivals as Microsoft and Mozilla. On the device side, the pioneers of computing are pitted against traditional phone makers as well as startups that have emerged in the smartphone era. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, the rise of sub-$100 smartphones means that billions more will have their first connection to the Internet. And the basic cellphone not only delivers communication but also provides a channel for previously unavailable information about health care, weather and crops.</p>
<p>Like the signature <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> event, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/category/dive-into-mobile/"><strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong></a>, running today and tomorrow, pointedly avoids the usual slides and speeches, instead spotlighting candid interviews with an array of the most interesting and outspoken execs in the business.</p>
<p>The first <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> event, held in 2010, explored the dawn of the smartphone era. This year&#8217;s Global Edition will look at the broader impact mobile technology is having on how day-to-day life is carried on across the world. This event was originally slated for last October, but Hurricane Sandy forced a sudden change in plans. We are immensely grateful to all of the speakers, sponsors and attendees who stuck by us. We promise that things will be even better than what we originally had planned for last fall.</p>
<p><strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> founders Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher will spend time in the red chairs, to be sure. But they have graciously allowed much of the conference programming to be crafted by the two of us, Ina Fried and Liz Gannes, who spend much of our time reporting on and writing about the world of mobile. Together with Walt, Kara and the growing <strong>AllThingsD</strong> staff, we look forward to bringing you the stories and strategies behind this global mobile shift. Over the next two days, you&#8217;ll hear from some of the biggest names in mobile technology. Fresh from his travels to North Korea and beyond, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt will be able to address Google&#8217;s wide-ranging mobile efforts, from Android and Chrome to AdMob and YouTube. Long dominant on the desktop, Microsoft and Intel have each had their own struggles in mobile. Intel&#8217;s Mike Bell and Microsoft&#8217;s Terry Myerson will appear separately to make the case why their company shouldn&#8217;t be counted out.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s newly minted Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer will address the challenge &#8212; one that&#8217;s now closely watched by Wall Street &#8212; of following the migration of his company&#8217;s users from Web to mobile. Meanwhile, browser maker Mozilla is trying to shake up the phone market like it did the Web browser market, by introducing an open alternative to dominant operating systems. You will also hear from a range of speakers who will talk firsthand about how mobile is changing the lives of the young, the poor and those in crisis. We&#8217;ve invited Nancy Lublin from the teen activism organization DoSomething.org, along with Juliana Rotich, the Kenyan founder of open source crisis-information service Ushahidi.</p>
<p>Our Global Voices segment will give a place onstage to individuals whose lives have been personally transformed by mobile technology. This is a new project for <strong>D</strong> that aims to share some of our business and tech spotlight with the real-world people who are the reason all this technology is created in the first place.</p>
<p>And, of course, <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> will bring together some of the smartest people in the industry &#8212; in the audience. Our hope is that the talks onstage will be the start of a dialogue that continues into the breaks, over the meals, and long after the red chairs have been hauled away.</p>

<p>One of Yahoo&#8217;s top women execs, Elissa Murphy, who is VP of engineering for cloud services, is departing the Silicon Valley Internet giant to become CTO and head of platform efforts at Go Daddy, said sources.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the second talent raid on Yahoo by the company&#8217;s former product head Blake Irving, who is now CEO at one of the world’s biggest Web hosting and domain registration companies. A few weeks ago, he grabbed <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130318/global-platform-head-carroll-departs-yahoo-for-go-daddy-while-yahoo-news-head-leaves-for-nbc/">James Carroll</a>, who was SVP of the consumer and global platform group at Yahoo and who is now running international efforts at Go Daddy.</p>
<p>Murphy is perhaps the highest-profile woman within the tech ranks at Yahoo &#8212; besides its CEO Marissa Mayer &#8212; and is very well regarded within the company and outside it, too, for her computing expertise. She has overseen a great deal of code contributions to Hadoop, a technology essential to large-scale computing, first developed at Yahoo.</p>
<p>She is leaving the employ of platform head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121115/mayer-brings-back-ex-yahoo-rossiter-to-lead-platforms-memo-time/">Jay Rossiter</a>, for whom Carroll also worked.</p>
<p>Both Murphy and Carroll had first been hired into Yahoo by Irving.</p>
<p>(<strong>Update</strong>: Go Daddy confirmed the move, saying she will start May 6 as CTO and EVP of platforms there. &#8220;Elissa Murphy is more than just a top &#8216;woman&#8217; in technology, she&#8217;s a top &#8216;person&#8217; at the top of her field,&#8221; said Irving in a statement. &#8220;Elissa just plain rocks.&#8221;)</p>
<p>She seems to, as currently featured on a <a href="http://us.careers.yahoo.com/ourpeople/content/42/lang/en">Yahoo careers page</a> that touts &#8220;stories from our most valuable assets.&#8221;</p>
<p>Read the deservedly effusive text about her: &#8220;Yahoo!&#8217;s ability to retain a fun, startup-like feel is what attracted Elissa Murphy to Yahoo!. The VP of Engineering for Cloud Services says that this unique combination makes for a creative, yet fast-paced environment that is unlike anything else in the industry. &#8216;You want to build cloud systems but you want to do it quickly? This is the place you want to come to.&#8217;&#8221;</p>

<p>I’m writing you today to share that I&#8217;ve just resigned my position as head of Cloud Services and Hadoop at Yahoo! to pursue a new venture. The time I&#8217;ve spent working and learning with you has been wonderful, and it&#8217;s not easy to say goodbye. I have, however, been presented with a truly unique opportunity to expand my scope of impact at a company with indomitable spirit, brimming with passion and hell-bent on changing the world.    </p>

<p>In its first C-level hire from outside the company, Eventbrite has brought in experienced finance exec Mark Rubash as CFO. The San Francisco-based self-service ticketing platform has hired the former Shutterfly CFO &#8212; who also held top finance jobs at eBay and Yahoo &#8212; to focus on scaling and expanding its business model and global growth.</p>
<p>And while CEO and co-founder Kevin Hartz declined to say in an interview whether the move was Eventbrite&#8217;s first major step toward a possible IPO, he did underscore the need to gird the company&#8217;s management for future expansion.</p>
<p>Recently, the company said it had sold $1.5 billion in gross ticket sales since it was founded five years ago, with total tickets sold topping 100 million. Eventbrite said that it had sold $600 million of that in 2012 alone, hawking 36 million tickets in 179 countries for such events as San Francisco&#8217;s iconic Bay to Breakers footrace.</p>
<p>That kind of hypergrowth requires some more experienced management, &#8220;independent of any public offering process,&#8221; said Hartz.</p>
<p>&#8220;We had an opportunity to bring in a great operator to help us become a multi-category e-commerce marketplace,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Mark has deep experience in building marketplaces of buyers and sellers.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. At eBay, Rubash had global purview over eBay finance, investor relations, accounting and more, while he ran Yahoo&#8217;s global finance for its paid search, display advertising and e-commerce units. He has also worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and at companies such as HeartFlow, Rearden Commerce and Critical Path.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a real alignment of what I am passionate about, with a team I really enjoy,&#8221; said Rubash. &#8220;With the mass of transactions growing on a global basis at Eventbrite, it&#8217;s the kind of challenge that is really hard to resist.&#8221;</p>
<p>Eventbrite&#8217;s investors include Tiger Global, Sequoia Capital, DAG Ventures and Tenaya Capital, with about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110518/thats-the-ticket-eventbrite-scores-50-million/">$80 million in funding raised</a> since 2006.</p>

<p>As I noted in a piece last week about the departure of Yahoo Mail head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130313/outbox-yahoo-mail-head-sharma-leaves-company/">Vivek Sharma</a> for a new job at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130315/former-yahoo-mail-head-taking-key-online-parks-role-at-disney/">Disney</a>, the Silicon Valley Internet giant is likely to see a lot more execs unhappy with the new regime of CEO Marissa Mayer take off after annual bonuses start being handed out in March. </p>
<p>Today, it&#8217;s <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=1933875&#038;authType=NAME_SEARCH&#038;authToken=AsvJ&#038;locale=en_US&#038;srchid=3bee5e22-c5e7-46c5-bf02-e20ed7a07035-0&#038;srchindex=4&#038;srchtotal=998&#038;goback=%2Efps_PBCK_*1_James_Carroll_*1_*1_*1_*1_*2_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_*1_*51_*1_*51_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2&#038;pvs=ps&#038;trk=pp_profile_name_link">James Carroll</a>, SVP of the consumer and global platform group at Yahoo. </p>
<p>In the job, the former Microsoft exec has been in charge of the company&#8217;s global R&#038;D centers in China, India and the Middle East and been &#8220;responsible for Yahoo’s content, social and membership platforms and the international delivery of all Yahoo! products and services worldwide.&#8221; That has included all its efforts at internationalization, international infrastructure development and localization.</p>
<p>Sources said he is leaving to head international at Go Daddy, one of the world&#8217;s biggest Web hosting and domain registration companies. Go Daddy is led by former Yahoo product head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121211/former-yahoo-exec-blake-irving-named-ceo-of-domain-giant-go-daddy/">Blake Irving</a>, who had hired Carroll at Yahoo in 2010.</p>
<p>And, as <a href="http://www.nbcuniversal.presscentre.com/content/detail.aspx?ReleaseID=15472&#038;NewsAreaId=2">NBC announced earlier today</a>, editor in chief of Yahoo News, Hillary Frey, has taken a job there as editorial director of news at NBCNews.com, which is undergoing a <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/03/18/nbcnews-com-makes-first-wave-of-hires/">major refurbishment</a>. She had been at Yahoo since late 2011.</p>
<p>Many more to come, I am told, as execs either decide to depart or Mayer continues to clean house. It&#8217;s still unclear who will be taking over these key jobs at Yahoo. </p>
<p>One thing for sure: I don&#8217;t expect a comment from Yahoo PR on the changes.</p>

<p>Former Vice President Al Gore took to the stage at the SXSW interactive festival today to tell a packed auditorium at the Austin Convention Center about the future.</p>
<p>No, <em>really</em>, &#8220;The Future,&#8221; which is the name of his new book, with the heavy-duty subhead &#8220;Six Drivers of Global Change.&#8221;</p>
<p>Among these drivers are &#8212; no surprise for him &#8212; severe environmental damage, as well as overpopulation and changes in biology via technology, and all the problems that come with that. Among the other critical issues, Gore also noted money politics, the ever-more-sophisticated antibiotics for livestock, and the reliance on supercomputers for stock market trading.</p>
<p>Gore told <strong>AllThingsD</strong> editor Walt Mossberg in an interview that some of these global developments were both a &#8220;peril and opportunity.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, in all, it&#8217;s a pretty depressing picture overall that he is painting, despite pointing out that knowing you have a problem is the first step.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our country is in very serious trouble,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But that does not mean I am not optimistic.&#8221;</p>
<p>Which is right before Gore started reeling off the problematic pressure that money has put on politics. &#8220;Our democracy has been hacked,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>&#8220;American democracy has never been perfect, but more often than not, the will of the people did drive policy,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Congress today is utterly incapable of passing any reform of any significance unless they get permission from special interests.&#8221;</p>
<p>For example: &#8220;The NRA is a fraud,&#8221; about the National Rifle Association and its links to gun manufacturers.</p>
<p>&#8220;I wish I could get you to be more outspoken,&#8221; joked Mossberg. </p>
<p>&#8220;Timidity has always been an issue with me,&#8221; joshed Gore back.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/03/spider-goat.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/03/spider-goat-327x285.png" alt="spider goat" width="327" height="285" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-301991" /></a></p>
<p>Gore, who often likes to talk in full and <em>very</em> extended paragraphs, slowly worked through the rest of the list, before he got to the issue of spider goats.</p>
<p>Indeed, spider goats, which are created using genetics to mix the genes of spiders and goats.</p>
<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t farm spiders for a number of reasons, so people are talking the genes from spiders and splicing them into goats,&#8221; explained Gore. &#8220;They look like goats, then these spider goats secret silk through their udders. &#8216;Everyone okay with that?&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Um, <em>no</em>. </p>
<p>Still, Gore added that there are &#8220;blessings&#8221; that come with genetic engineering, including the elimination of a range of devastating diseases.</p>
<p>Gore soon moved onto the issue for which he is best known &#8212; global warming &#8212; after his movie &#8220;An Inconvenient Truth&#8221; gained worldwide attention.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not me saying it &#8212; I&#8217;m delivering the message. Every single national academy of science on the planet agrees with this, he said, before moving onto the recent devastation of Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast. &#8220;Mother Nature has the most powerful voice in this debate.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Mossberg and Gore soon parried over the sale of Gore&#8217;s media company, Current, to Al Jazeera. </p>
<p>You sold your network to Al Jazeera, which is owned by a government that&#8217;s a big oil producer,&#8221; asked Mossberg. &#8220;How could you do that?&#8221;</p>
<p>While hemming and hawing about that, Gore then came back with a good one: &#8220;I don&#8217;t ask you why you continue working for Rupert Murdoch.&#8221;</p>
<p>This meant war, since this site is owned by News Corp. &#8220;Last I checked, he&#8217;s not in the oil business,&#8221; countered Mossberg.</p>
<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s also not strictly in the news business, either,&#8221; said Gore.</p>
<p>Oh dear, time to get back to global warming, because it&#8217;s getting <em>hot in here</em>.</p>
<p>It was then onto a short Q&#038;A, with one question about the Internet &#8212; an issue near and dear to Gore&#8217;s heart. In truth, despite all the jokes, he was critical when a senator to turning the Internet over to the people, from its origins as a government project.</p>
<p>And in this Gore finally pointed to a bright glimmer of hope. &#8220;The future of democracy,&#8221; he said, &#8220;may well depend on the continued freedom and independence of the Internet.&#8221;</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For every winner, there has to be a loser. Smartphone sales have defied gravity in recent years, but there&#8217;s no defying simple math.</p>
<p>Several major Asia-based smartphone manufacturers are talking up their growth plans. South Korea&#8217;s LG Electronics says its smartphone shipments will jump 50% in year-on-year in 2013. China&#8217;s expects to post a 50% increase in shipments too. Huawei Technologies says it will ship 60 million smartphones this year, up 88% from 32 million in 2012.</p>
<p>The global market is certainly expanding quickly, but not that fast. Between 2010 and 2011, total global shipments increased 64%, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. In 2012, the pace of shipment growth slowed to 43% year-on-year. In 2013, growth is expected to slow down further to 36%, Strategy Analytics says.</p>
<p>With the overall market growing at a slower pace than what individual manufacturers are forecasting, something&#8217;s got to give.</p>

<p>Brunswick Group&#8217;s Michael Buckley, who has been working with Facebook on a range of corporate and other PR issues over the last several years, will be joining the social networking giant as VP of business communications.</p>
<p>Buckley is essentially taking the job held by well-known Washington, D.C., player Joe Lockhart, who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121004/high-profile-facebook-comms-vp-joe-lockhart-departs/">left the company last fall</a>.</p>
<p>In his new job, Facebook said that Buckley would be in charge of the company&#8217;s international, monetization, corporate, consumer and policy communications.</p>
<p>Buckley has been with the global strategy and communications consultancy Brunswick Group, one of Facebook&#8217;s outside agencies, for a decade, most recently as a U.S. managing partner, where he represented a number of clients at once. In tech, that has included Groupon&#8217;s Andrew Mason, as well as Mike Lynch of Autonomy, which is battling Hewlett-Packard right now.</p>
<p>At Facebook, he will report to Elliot Schrage, who is VP of communications and public policy, where Buckley will be one of three top execs in that organization. The others are VP of tech communications Caryn Marooney, and Marne Levine, VP of global policy.</p>

<p>The Los Angeles-based Rubicon Project has hired two execs to fill top spots at the digital advertising company, in what looks like preparations for an eventual public offering. </p>
<p>Greg Raifman, the founder, chairman and CEO of Dragon Media, will become president, reporting to Rubicon CEO and co-founder Frank Addante. And SocialVibe CEO Todd Tappin will take over in the role of COO/CFO, reporting to Raifman.</p>
<p>Founded in 2007 and armed with more than $50 million in funding, Rubicon is one of the larger real-time bidding platforms that allows automated buying and selling of global online ads. </p>
<p>&#8220;Greg and Todd are extremely intelligent and capable executives who have guided significant, publicly traded companies,&#8221; said Addante in a statement. &#8220;Both Greg and Todd have great relationships within our industry as well as on Wall Street. Their presence will enable me to focus on our overall vision and product strategy so we can take best advantage of the opportunities we see.&#8221;</p>
<p>Tappin is replacing Brian Barnum, who will leave the company, along with Chief Revenue Officer Nick Hulse. The pair only arrived less than two years ago, presumably to also help professionalize the organization.</p>
<p>In addition to the other exec moves, general counsel Victoria Von Szeliski will add the title of EVP of culture and business affairs and will also be adding 100 employees this year via organic growth and acquisition.</p>
<p>Rubicon said Raifman &#8212; who recently served as the executive chairman of video ad-serving company LiveRail, as well as being founding and running ad-serving pioneer Mediaplex &#8212; will &#8220;manage the day-to-day operations of the Rubicon Project as he ramps the company&#8217;s buy-side automation initiatives.&#8221; </p>
<p>Tappin will be in charge of Rubicon&#8217;s operating and financial plan and also lead mergers and acquisitions for the company. Before running SocialVibe, a video real-time buying startup, he was founding CFO of Overture and helped sell the search automation company to Yahoo many years ago.</p>
<p>The exec roundelay &#8212; a not entirely uncommon thing for Rubicon over the years &#8212; is apparently part of a larger bid to eventually IPO the company. Rubicon had also been in recent preliminary discussions with several larger companies &#8212; Yahoo and Adobe &#8212; about being acquired. The ad tech space has heated up of late, with a range of startups, such as AppNexus, Pubmatic, Turn and others, looking to gain ground, get funding or sell out.</p>
<p>But with a large price tag and some strong growth over the last year, along with becoming profitable, Rubicon appears to now be aiming to remain independent. Over the last few years, the company has grown its business significantly &#8212; according to comScore, Rubicon Project reached 214.2 million monthly unique users.</p>
<p>Whether that is enough to keep up with powerful rivals such as Google is, of course, the big question, especially as the way publishers and marketers interact with the online ad market is changing quickly.</p>

<p>Earlier today Yahoo <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130128/yahoo-beats-earnings-estimates-on-flattish-revenue/">reported fourth-quarter earnings</a> that beat analyst estimates, on still-flattish revenue.</p>
<p>Still, up is up, even if it is not really that much up, so Wall Steet bid up shares of the Silicon Valley Internet giant in after-hours trading.</p>
<p>Now it&#8217;s onto the conference call with investors for CEO Marissa Mayer:</p>
<p><strong>2:02 pm</strong>: Before the call, you can hear Mayer complaining about the goofy music played during the pre-conference call waiting time.</p>
<p>&#8220;We <em>have</em> to get better music,&#8221; she says to some minion. &#8220;This is <em>not</em> good music.&#8221;</p>
<p>Music to my ears! I say we get Beyoncé, lipsyncing or not.</p>
<p>The call starts quickly after that, with the ever-eager Mayer leaping right in with the fourth-quarter news, which is not all that bad. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s the first full year of growth in a while &#8212; though not the first quarter-to-quarter increase &#8212; even if it is only a very modest two percent increase. </p>
<p>That compares to industry-wide gains in revenue of many, many, many times that, but for Yahoo this is cause for a parade. A small parade, with good music, but a parade nonetheless.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to believe this is only my first full quarter here at Yahoo,&#8221; says Mayer in an upbeat tone.</p>
<p>She notes that her focus on product excellence and user experience was continuing, with some &#8220;early positive trends&#8221; in both products and people.</p>
<p>Mayer then list a series of moves, from the free food and better smartphones for employees to the addition of well-regarded entrepreneur Max Levchin to the board to the refreshes of Yahoo Mail and Flickr to the acquisition of some sassy new mobile startups.</p>
<p>Mayer also notes that the company under her purview had removed &#8220;385 of highest priority obstacles,&#8221; although she did not name any specifics. </p>

<p>I imagine what No. 332 is: Switching out the iceberg lettuce at the URL cafeteria on Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif. HQ campus with some tasty organic mesclun as they have at Google, from whence Mayer came.</p>
<p>Better roughage means better returns!</p>
<p><strong>2:14 pm</strong>: Mayer turns the call over to CFO Ken Goldman, also a newbie. As usual, he runs through the numbers that are already in all the releases already. But I am enjoying his New England accent, hoping he will say the slight increase in revenue was &#8220;wicked&#8221; good.</p>
<p>Goldman, in fact, calls the revenue increase &#8220;modest,&#8221; which is true, although it sounds like &#8220;<em>mah-dist</em>.&#8221;</p>
<p>What&#8217;s not mah-dist is how much stock Yahoo has bought back, using its windfall from the recent sale of assets in China. It&#8217;s $1.45 billion, with more that that left to use for more share buybacks. That should keep Yahoo&#8217;s stock up nicely.</p>
<p>Goldman also talks about increases in the company&#8217;s search business, although notes that the Microsoft relationship is still not the most fantastic. </p>
<p>He speaks more effusively of Yahoo&#8217;s Asian partners, including Yahoo! Japan and China&#8217;s Alibaba Group. It&#8217;s deserved, since they have been the company&#8217;s treasure trove against its meh core performance in recent years.</p>
<p>Not so tasty is the problem Yahoo has with a big-money contract dispute in Mexico, which Goldman reiterates is &#8220;without merit.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>2:28 pm</strong>: Goldman moves onto Yahoo&#8217;s cash position, which is strong and which he says is going to be used to make the company better.</p>
<p>Mayer is back on board, talking about key focuses over multiple years. </p>
<p>She says Yahoo needs a &#8220;chain reaction of growth,&#8221; which needs to be fueled by a dozen new products that become a daily habits for consumers to increase usage and other metrics.</p>

<p>A nuclear bomb explosion is not exactly the best metaphor for a company&#8217;s turnaround, but in Yahoo&#8217;s case it is probably a pretty good one, given how stubborn its decline has been.</p>
<p>Mayer then switches the metaphor to one she recently used about &#8220;returning to the roots&#8221; of Yahoo. </p>
<p>Actually, mixing the metaphors, Yahoo has to blast some significant roots that have gotten in the way of its innovation over the years. </p>
<p>&#8220;The best is yet to come,&#8221; promises Mayer, in what she says will be a multi-year effort.</p>
<p>Now onto questions from the analysts!</p>
<p><strong>2:40 pm</strong>: The first question is about commercialization of its products. Mayer answers she is both pro-advertising and anti-ad &#8212; meaning they are good when they add to user experience and bad when they do not.</p>
<p>There will be slight margin declines due to this, which is the real point of the query, which Goldman says will not be too impacted.</p>
<p>The next question is on the weaker performance in display ads and whether mobile ads can ramp up quick enough or not.</p>
<p>Yahoo is not breaking out mobile revenue numbers as yet &#8212; it&#8217;s not impressive as yet, so that&#8217;s what&#8217;s going on there &#8212; although Mayer points to the number of mobile users increasing to 200 million now.</p>
<p>As to the declines in display, Mayer gives a non-answer, but it is likely due to big changes that new Yahoo COO Henrique De Castro has put into place in the way it sells ads and which <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> previously reported on. Mayer earlier in the call had confirmed those changes.</p>
<p>The fact of the matter &#8212; which is just what the analyst was asking about &#8212; is that Mayer simply <em>has</em> to improve display revenue, which is Yahoo&#8217;s core business.</p>
<p>Mayer then addresses the issue of not providing usage metrics anymore. Yahoo has withheld a lot of them since she has taken over, and she says it is because they are not indicative of metrics that, well, she thinks you need to know. </p>
<p>Instead, Mayer points to other metrics that she feels are better, such as number of ads sold and price per click on search.</p>

<p>Speaking of search, the next question is about that. What can Mayer say &#8212; and she does &#8212; but that Yahoo must also improve in that area. Indeed, it is lucrative low-hanging fruit for the company.</p>
<p>Here comes an interesting observation she makes based on a question of mobile versus desktop, which Mayer says should not be separated as two areas as consumers don&#8217;t think that way. </p>
<p>Yahoo is tuning up a dozen products, she says, having started with Yahoo Mail and its Flickr photo-sharing app.</p>
<p><strong>2:54 pm</strong>: Mayer is not saying which of this dirty dozen is next to get a makeover.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re investing in small, nimble, excellent teams,&#8221; says Mayer, who then tries to reference a famous Margaret Mead quote, but ends up mangling it a bit.</p>
<p>It is, for the record: &#8220;Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.&#8221;</p>
<p>This is true, which might make some Yahoo staffers nervous, since Mayer&#8217;s recent stack ranking of them means she can start on employee layoffs anytime she likes to separate the wheat from the chaff.</p>
<p><strong>3:01 pm</strong>: <em>Whoo-whee</em>, this is going long and I am getting weary. Mayer has to be some kind of digital Energizer Bunny &#8212; she just flew in from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and moved right into the prep for the Q4 earnings. </p>
<p>Tomorrow, she is presumably off to Las Vegas, where Yahoo&#8217;s global sales conference will start and she will doubtlessly be making an appearance.</p>
<p>I am exhausted simply by walking up and down the stairs at my house.</p>
<p>The next question is about third-party publishers and ad tech on mobile.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mobile monetization is new for everyone,&#8221; she says correctly, making the point that no one knows what is going to shake out.</p>
<p>She uses &#8212; as she has used &#8212; the example of when people thought search was not a moneymaker until Google proved otherwise.</p>
<p>The problem is, of course, that Google is Yahoo&#8217;s biggest rival in this new mobile ad arena, along with Facebook and many others. And Google, as its recent results showed, does know how to make money compared to Yahoo.</p>
<p>The next question is about mobile monetization eating into desktop revenue. </p>
<p>Mayer notes that Yahoo has hired 120 people with computer science degrees in the quarter to work on that area. </p>
<p>In other words, get ready for a symphony of geeks to return Yahoo to relevance. </p>
<p>Would they can pull it off, as that would be a tune worth listening to.</p>

<p>Even though it seems like a dog&#8217;s age, it has been only two years since AOL bought the Huffington Post at the Super Bowl XLV in Dallas (yes, papers were actually signed there).</p>
<p>Back then &#8212; after <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash/">AOL ponied up $315 million</a>, mostly in cash, to buy one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent news and opinion sites, along with one of the most famous women on the Web as its leader &#8212; the pair called it: &#8220;One plus one equals 11.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking back today, it&#8217;s more like one plus one equals fireworks &#8212; given all the dramatic narrative that has ensued since the deal was struck. While it started off with a series of splashy joint appearances &#8212; hey, world, it&#8217;s the Tim and Arianna show! &#8212; some bumps in the road later resulted in a fair amount of tension between Armstrong and Huffington, which the two now say has passed. </p>
<p>That has included a big, ugly (but still riveting) fight among and between Armstrong, Huffington and Michael Arrington of TechCrunch, another AOL property. Without reliving the messy timeline and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110902/crunchfund-unethical-ventures-pigpile-partners-no-matter-what-you-call-it-its-business-as-usual-in-silicon-valley/">ethical traffic accident</a>, Arrington <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110912/its-official-arrington-out-at-aol/">left after a lot of Sturm und Drang</a>, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/give-me-back-my-baby-michael-arrington-trying-to-buy-back-techcrunch-from-aol-but-would-aol-sell-it/">verbally trashing Huffington</a> on his way out the door, even though he later returned to the fold as a columnist. </p>
<p>(Bygones? <em>Whatever!</em>)</p>
<p>More importantly, while her role was conceived much more broadly and horizontally at the time of the acquisition, as a kind of overall content ruler at AOL, that clearly did not work out as envisioned and &#8212; perhaps as it should have been from the start &#8212; it has since been made very vertical. </p>
<p>That has essentially meant Huffington gets to rule over her fast-expanding empire of global sites under her name, with Armstrong footing the investment and tending to fixing the other parts of the company.</p>
<p>Thus, for now at least, all&#8217;s well that ends well. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121226/taking-stock-of-internet-stocks-in-2012-and-the-winner-is-aol/">AOL&#8217;s stock has soared this year</a>, after a series of shrewd financial and organizational moves by Armstrong, and Huffington is ever busy opening yet another international Web outpost. </p>
<p>I checked in with both on how they are doing, in separate video interviews that I did last week in New York, where AOL is located. And to remember how this Web marriage started, I&#8217;ve also included the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110206/aols-tim-armstrong-and-huffpos-arianna-huffington-talk-about-deal-touchdown-from-super-bowl/">the one I did two years ago</a> in Dallas at the dawn of the relationship.</p>

<p>Shakil Khan &#8212; the well-known head of special projects for the popular Spotify music service, who took the same kind of job at Path last year &#8212; is departing the personal social networking site.</p>
<p>He will remain a special adviser, and is also an investor in the San Francisco-based startup.</p>
<p>The globe-trotting Khan (pictured here), who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120330/spotifys-special-projects-head-shakil-khan-moves-to-path-to-do-same/">arrived at the startup only last March</a>, had worked with Path on a number of efforts, especially in expanding its international presence. Path recently hired Shindo Kimihiko to turbocharge the company&#8217;s efforts in the fast-growing Asian markets.</p>
<p>A Path spokeswoman confirmed the departure after I inquired, and the London-based Khan also emailed me this statement:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>When I joined Path, the company was just 20 people, only available in a handful of languages and the resources were mainly U.S.-focused. During my time there, we launched in 17 languages, established great teams in marketing, localization, growth and international and doubled the number of staff. As more than 50 percent of Path&#8217;s usage is now international, I&#8217;d say that my original objective of helping Path to think in more international terms and capitalize on global opportunities is done :) Moving to the next stage of Path&#8217;s growth, I remain as a Special Advisor to the company, as well as continuing to spend time with my other investment companies, including Spotify, SecondMarket, Summly, Blackjet and a couple of exciting startups at incubation stage.</p></blockquote>
<p>Path recently announced that the service &#8212; which has raised $55 million in funding &#8212; had five million users.</p>

<p>TaskRabbit, the San Francisco-based marketplace for personal projects and services, has hired longtime Google exec Stacy Brown-Philpot as COO.</p>
<p>As both its funding and also competition have increased, the move is another major effort by TaskRabbit to up its management game.</p>
<p>Brown-Philpot certainly fits the bill, having worked at a wide range of jobs at Google for more than a decade. The Detroit native was most recently an entrepreneur in residence at Google Ventures, and has worked on global operations for a wide range of products &#8212; including as head of online sales and operations for Google India &#8212; and also in high-level finance jobs at the Silicon Valley search giant.</p>
<p>Previous to Google, Brown-Philpot worked at the PricewaterhouseCoopers accounting firm and also in M&amp;A at Goldman Sachs. She attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and has an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.</p>
<p>In other words, a very impressive resume &#8212; more impressive, given that she has always been a straightforward and charming exec in my many encounters with her over the years.</p>
<p>Brown-Philpot will be the second time that TaskRabbit founder Leah Busque has tried to expand the company&#8217;s top talent base. In June of last year, <a href="http://www.taskrabbit.com/blog/taskrabbit-news/leah-busque-returns-as-taskrabbits-ceo/">Busque took back the title of CEO</a> from Hotwire founder Eric Grosse, who had been hired in late 2011.</p>
<p>But in November of 2012, TaskRabbit bought One Jackson, adding Anne Raimondi (pictured above with Brown-Philpot and Busque) as chief revenue officer. And now Brown-Philpot.</p>
<p>The trio has their work cut out for them. Last July, the company garnered another $13 million in funding in a Series C round, led by Founders Fund and including existing investors such as Shasta Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Parters. The startup has raised $38 million in total over its five-year history.</p>

<p>As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121210/in-seismic-shift-new-coo-de-castro-shifts-yahoo-ad-sales-to-category-model-backed-by-the-marissa-halo/">I had previously reported</a>, Yahoo&#8217;s key business unit &#8212; its advertising sales force &#8212; is now getting details of a reorganization by its new leader, COO Henrique De Castro.</p>
<p>In making the changes, just weeks ahead of Yahoo&#8217;s annual sales conference in Las Vegas on Jan. 21, De Castro is borrowing rather heavily from the set-up of the powerful ad business at Google, from whence he came.</p>
<p>By shifting the sales organization to a &#8220;category&#8221; model, sales reps at the Silicon Valley Internet giant will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, across channels in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments, such as automotive, entertainment and packaged goods.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long sold its advertising in a regional and tiered organization against premium and performance inventory in display and search, designed to avoid vertical conflict. Thus, the sales staff have built up advertiser relationships across many areas, which will not work in the new system.</p>
<p>Sources inside the company said regional leaders will now be shifted to running various verticals. There will be support specialists for those areas, too. </p>
<p>Mark Ellis, who was most recently VP of North American sales and global partnerships, will pay a key role in the new org, said sources. It is not clear, though, what role Peter Foster, who has headed audience advertising, will play. Another high-ranking exec, Keith Kaplan, has apparently been shifted to focus on agency relationships.</p>
<p>As I had previously written, there are many different ways to organize sales, but making such major change has potentially large ramifications on Yahoo&#8217;s financial performance, at least in the short term, since advertising makes up the bulk of its revenue.</p>
<p>According to numerous sources inside Yahoo, the changes are causing some measure of worry and confusion across the salesforce at the company, since it comes after a lot of wrenching changes over the last year.</p>
<p>That includes the departure of well-regarded <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121017/mayer-tells-staff-barrett-officially-out-at-yahoo/">Chief Revenue Officer Michael Barrett</a> in mid-October, after De Castro got the COO job. He has left a large gap in sales leadership and in maintaining strong relationships with big advertisers and agencies. De Castro himself is not as well known in the ad marketplace, despite many years at Google in its sales organization.</p>
<p>He will likely have a more high-profile <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121226/yahoos-mayer-hoping-what-happens-with-big-advertisers-at-ces-doesnt-stay-in-vegas/">next week at the International CES</a>, the huge annual consumer electronics show taking place in Las Vegas, along with new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who was a top product exec at Google. The pair is planning on meeting with major ad clients while there, which is their first significant outreach to marketers since taking their new roles at Yahoo.</p>
<p>De Castro had outlined the new ad reorg plan immediately after a multiday offsite with top sales leaders several weeks ago, and said the changes would come at the very beginning of 2013.</p>
<p>The ad staff at Yahoo begin to hear of the changes on Friday, so it looks like De Castro has met his deadline.</p>

<p>For a long time in Web 1.0 and Web 2.0, Brad Koenig was one of Silicon Valley&#8217;s top investment bankers, shepherding deals such as Yahoo&#8217;s IPO and a plethora of others.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise, given that he was the managing director and head of global technology investment banking at Goldman Sachs. Goldman, as well as Morgan Stanley, led many of the big-name, big-money transactions for the digerati.</p>
<p>But no matter how you slice it, Koenig&#8217;s job was on the sidelines as a facilitator rather than as a participant.</p>
<p>No longer. After retiring in 2005 from Goldman and doing a bunch of advising work, Koenig decided to jump into the fray, putting his money into a new start-up called <a href="https://www.foodydirect.com/">FoodyDirect</a>.</p>
<p>Simply put, the service ships food from iconic restaurants, bakeries and other specialty food outlets, adding in a variety of information about the products and also making it easier for those businesses to ship.</p>
<p>Some of the offers being coordinated include well-known &#8212; among foodies, at least &#8212; fare from places such as Anderson&#8217;s Frozen Custard in Buffalo, N.Y.; Black&#8217;s Barbecue in Lockhart, Texas; Sable&#8217;s Smoked Fish in New York City; and Hancock Gourmet Lobster in Cundy&#8217;s Harbor, Maine.</p>
<p>I tried both Anderson&#8217;s and Sable&#8217;s and they arrived on time and fresh &#8212; as well as delicious &#8212; which is presumably the selling point that FoodyDirect pitches to merchants.</p>
<p>While many of these restaurants do this on their own, Koenig is hoping that the systems FoodyDirect creates are easier and more efficient, from packaging to shipping.</p>
<p>Of course, FoodyDirect faces a lot of competition &#8212; from big online retailers like Amazon to smaller ones like Gilt Taste &#8212; as well as an uphill battle to acquire frequent customers.</p>
<p>But Koenig believes in the concept so much &#8212; which he is doing with his brother, who has been in the restaurant biz for 25 years &#8212; that he invested his own money in the initial effort.</p>
<p>Now, along with more money from him, a bunch of angel investors and venture interest, FoodyDirect is getting $3 million more to see if the concept pans out.</p>

<p>In yet another instance of a Silicon Valley venture firm bringing in big government guns to class up the place, Khosla Ventures said that it had signed the international consulting firm run by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to &#8220;bring global and domestic insight to Khosla&#8217;s portfolio companies, helping them achieve their strategic goals in industries such as technology, energy, security and healthcare.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, <em>strategery</em> plus!</p>
<p>That will presumably be provided by Rice and her partners at RiceHadleyGates, which has offices in Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C., in an undisclosed financial arrangement with Khosla. RiceHadleyGates also includes former National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and former State Department official Anja Manuel. </p>
<p>In an interview yesterday, Manuel said that the goal was to help in areas that VCs might not be as familiar with, from Internet freedom laws in India to the challenges of moving into emerging markets. </p>
<p>&#8220;There are a lot of policy issues that entrepreneurs will be facing and we will try to be helpful as they sort through them,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We love working with innovative companies and want to make their global experience better.&#8221;</p>
<p>Khosla partner Samir Kaul said the firm was still figuring out how they will work together, but that Rice&#8217;s team would serve as &#8220;strategic advisers on an as needed basis.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;What [RiceHadleyGates] does fits in very well with a lot of our themes as investors in energy and security, for example,&#8221; said Kaul. &#8220;We want to offer the companies we invest in as much help as possible and this is a real win in that regard.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s certainly a high-profile move, although Khosla has done this before, signing former British Prime Minister <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100524/tony-blair-partners-up-with-khosla-ventures/">Tony Blair on as a strategic adviser</a> in 2010.</p>
<p>In addition, Andreessen Horowitz brought in former Treasury Secretary <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110629/now-is-the-larry-summers-of-our-silicon-valley-vc-economic-guru-joins-andreessen-horowitz-as-special-advisor/">Larry Summers</a>, as well as former D.C. Mayor <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120926/former-d-c-mayor-adrian-fenty-joins-andreessen-horowitz-as-special-advisor/">Adrian Fenty</a>, to lend its portfolio companies additional expertise.</p>
<p>Rice&#8217;s firm certainly has a lot of that, especially related to thorny international issues. Rice, who was once the provost at Stanford University, was also the National Security Adviser in the administration of former President George W. Bush, before moving to the State Department.</p>

<p>In what will be a major shift in how the Silicon Valley Internet giant sells online advertising, Yahoo&#8217;s new COO Henrique De Castro has briefed employees on a plan to move its sales organization to a &#8220;category&#8221; model, according to numerous sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Simply put, that means its sales reps will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments, such as automotive, entertainment and packaged goods.</p>
<p>This is how Google, where both De Castro and CEO Marissa Mayer recently worked, conducts its ad sales efforts. (After copying free food and smartphones, staff evaluation efforts and more, <em>What Would Google Do</em> seems to be strategery at Yahoo these days.)</p>
<p>In contrast, Yahoo has long sold its advertising in a regional and tiered organization against premium and performance inventory in display and search.</p>
<p>The move from regional to vertical is a &#8220;seismic shift,&#8221; said one source quite accurately. That&#8217;s because Yahoo&#8217;s go-to-market efforts have been designed to avoid vertical conflict and its sales staff have built up advertiser relations across many areas. In a vertical organization, those reps will be forced to give up these long-term relationships with marketers, some of which have been built over years.</p>
<p>There are, of course, many different ways to organize sales &#8212; and each has its fans and detractors. <p>Currently, the key ad execs at Yahoo under De Castro are Peter Foster, who heads audience advertising, and Mark Ellis, VP of North American sales and global partnerships.</p>
<p>De Castro outlined the new ad org plan to staff immediately after a multi-day offsite with top sales leaders last week, at which Yahoo&#8217;s acquisition options in the ad tech market were also discussed. </p>
<p>Sources said De Castro noted that the changes could take place as early as January 1. </p>
<p>De Castro is also planning to have Yahoo&#8217;s annual global sales meeting for the end of January in Las Vegas. Last March, the gathering &#8212; then set for about 1,300 advertising staffers in Florida &#8212; was cancelled due to a restructuring under ousted CEO Scott Thompson.</p>
<p>In addition, sources said, Yahoo is planning on having a much more prominent presence at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show &#8212; also taking place in Las Vegas in January &#8212; in order to solidify its relationships with advertisers. </p>
<p>Its big weapon at the giant annual confab will apparently be Mayer, who has not yet interfaced significantly with the company&#8217;s big ad clients since taking the top job in July. At CES, sources said, Yahoo is hoping the &#8220;Marissa Halo&#8221; &#8212; i.e. excitement around the telegenic exec &#8212; will help boost its business.</p>

<p>Tonight, new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer gave her first public interview since becoming the leader of the troubled Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p>Not to cranky me, <em>of course</em>, but to the much more <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121105/marissa-mayer-will-talk-about-where-she-is-taking-yahoo-in-first-media-interview-since-becoming-ceo/">amenable Fortune magazine writer and editor Pattie Sellers</a>, who hosted the former Google exec at a <a href="http://postcards.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/11/27/yahoo-marissa-mayer/?source=yahoo_quote">dinner in Palo Alto, Calif., as part of the magazine&#8217;s Most Powerful Women franchise</a>.</p>
<p>Fortune recently put a glamour shot of Mayer on the cover, and Sellers also did a profile. Now, Mayer was ready to sit down to talk about Yahoo and more.</p>
<p>(I wish I could have reported from the event, and almost did. I had initially been invited to the dinner at the Garden Court Hotel for about 100 guests, mostly women. But I was then waitlisted, and then told by Sellers directly that I could not attend, as the editors had decided to close out outside media and only have Fortune staffers covering it.)</p>
<p><em>Whatever!</em> I have my ways to liveblog it and do it faster than any magazine writer can &#8212; and none involve disguising myself as a cater-waiter or solely using the Twitter feed from Fortune. <em>As if!</em></p>
<p>Here goes:</p>
<p><strong>7:50 pm</strong>: After some lovely cocktails, the audience sits down at about 10 tables of nine people and starts in on the salad course. </p>
<p>Soon enough, the night starts off with a speech by a McKinsey partner (and presumable sponsor of the dinner), delivering some stats as part of a study of some sort about how businesses are using &#8212; or should be using &#8212; social tools. </p>

<p><em>More than 60 percent of knowledge workers spend time exchanging information &#8230; Social can deliver an estimated $1 trillion in value.</em></p>
<p>Big news! <em>Not! Even! Slightly!</em> Oh dear, please get to the opening act!</p>
<p>Finally, Sellers gives her intro of Mayer.</p>
<p><strong>8:04 pm</strong>: Sellers notes that her conference had hosted Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz in 2010 (she was ousted in 2011), and in 2011 had Mayer when she was an exec at Google (she became Yahoo CEO this year).</p>
<p>Now, in 2012, Mayer is top dog at Yahoo, and the youngest CEO in the Fortune 500.</p>
<p>&#8220;Why don&#8217;t we just call this &#8216;the most powerful Yahoo dinner,&#8217;&#8221; jokes Sellers.</p>
<p><em>Why not!</em> </p>
<p>Mayer &#8212; for those who care, and forgive me, since I am fashion-stupid &#8212; is wearing a black frock and some heeled Mary Janes. She gets big applause when Sellers notes that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121121/will-the-marissa-mayer-premium-or-is-it-those-hedge-fund-dudes-piling-in-finally-get-yahoos-stock-to-20-a-share/">Yahoo stock is up 18 percent</a> since Mayer became CEO.</p>
<p>Note: It did go down when she made a shareholder misstep early in her tenure, but has gone up since she repeated <em>mobilemobilemobile</em> with confidence on a recent earnings call that got investors excited about her tenure.</p>
<p><strong>8:08 pm</strong>: By the way, Mayer put in a call for people to vote for her as Time magazine&#8217;s Person of the Year (she is on the list of nominees &#8212; more kudos from a Time Inc. property).</p>
<p>Mayer starts off with basic PR messaging that she trotted out previously on <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121022/liveblogging-the-debut-of-yahoo-ceo-mayer-tailor-made-for-marissa/">the recent earnings call</a>, around how she wants Yahoo to be focused on &#8220;delighting and engaging users&#8221; and how it is a brand that touches people every day.</p>
<p>Therefore, its products need to be inspiring and delightful.</p>
<p>Daily delight! This is the buzzword.</p>

<p>Also, she notes, Yahoo should be the bestest place to work. </p>
<p>As apparent proof of that, Mayer says that all Research In Motion BlackBerry smartphones have been banished, and that Yahoos will be using Apple&#8217;s iPhones, Google&#8217;s Android phones and Microsoft&#8217;s Windows phones. </p>
<p>This has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120821/this-week-in-marissya-iphones-for-all-flickr-love-and-management-musical-chairs/">been <em>endlessly</em> reported</a>, even though most other Internet companies do this, but it&#8217;s a good line, anyway.</p>
<p><strong>8:12 pm</strong>: By the way, iPhones are the most popular with Yahoo employees.</p>
<p><em>News at 11!</em> (I will add that iPhones are the most popular with the Swisher boys, too, and &#8212; <em>irony alert</em> &#8212; one of their moms works at Google.)</p>
<p>Sellers then asks about what makes a good product, which is precisely why the product-savvy Mayer was brought in to fix Yahoo.</p>
<p>Says Mayer: &#8220;Acute user need.&#8221;</p>
<p>I acutely need doughnuts. Does this count?</p>
<p>Also, says Mayer, products have to be created in a way that is &#8220;frictionless and beautiful,&#8221; and that the offering cannot get in the consumer&#8217;s way.</p>
<p>Sellers asks her to name a great product. Mayer notes that she was not talking acquisitions, but quickly namechecks the iPhone and Google.</p>
<p>Since those companies&#8217; market caps are a <em>billionty</em> times bigger than Yahoo&#8217;s, she def cannot acquire anything there.</p>

<p><strong>8:17 pm</strong>: Mayer also apparently likes some kind of luxury paper made in Germany that looks like velvet. It&#8217;s <a href="http://www.gmund.com/EN/">Gmund</a>, by the way.</p>
<p>The topic moves on to Flickr, the once hip photo-sharing service that Yahoo bought and proceeded to ignore. Meanwhile, Instagram.</p>
<p>Mayer says that Yahoo needs to focus on the &#8220;global suite&#8221; services that are excellent, and on executing them well. </p>
<p>She points out Yahoo&#8217;s fantasy football service, mentioning its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121111/as-fantasy-football-servers-fumble-on-game-day-yahoo-rolls-out-more-homepage-tests-ahead-of-december-launch/">recent breakdown on game day</a> that sent fans into a tizzy.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a they-love-us-so-much-they-hate-us point.</p>
<p>Yahoo will not do things like online maps, though, Mayer says, noting that where Yahoo cannot compete, it should partner.</p>
<p>Sellers asked about acquisitions.</p>
<p>Mayer: <em>Mobilemobilemobile!</em> (It worked before!)</p>
<p><strong>8:22 pm</strong>: Mayer then mentions the importance of small teams that work together, such as its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121025/marissa-mayers-first-acquisition-at-yahoo-is-stamped/">recent Stamped purchase</a>.</p>
<p>She notes that the bigger and more strategic opportunities are around advertising technology. Calling the Rubicon Project!</p>
<p>Mayer veers away from a question about layoffs, a sad Yahoo tradition. I have <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121116/yahoo-ceo-mayer-cuts-end-of-year-week-of-rest-for-employees-while-prepping-plans-to-cull-bottom-20-percent-of-staff/">reported previously that she will make cuts via performance reviews</a>.</p>

<p>At Yahoo, she says, it&#8217;s now about performance, not potential: &#8220;No offense to potential, but what we really care about now is performance.&#8221;</p>
<p>No offense taken!</p>
<p>Also, everyone&#8217;s goals will be posted on the Yahoo Web site for everyone to see.</p>
<p>Oh, wait, there will surely be offense taken by those lazy potential people at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Mayer does add that Yahoo should be a &#8220;growth company,&#8221; and not one defined by cuts.</p>
<p><strong>8:28 pm</strong>: &#8220;The consumer Internet is growing, and we need to invest,&#8221; she says.</p>
<p>To achieve this will be a hard job, and will take multiple years, she adds.</p>
<p>Sellers asks about the Disney turnaround, which Mayer is apparently fascinated with. Mayer does indeed love Disney.</p>
<p>Who doesn&#8217;t? (Well, <em>me</em>, but I am an outlier.)</p>
<p>Speaking of Disney, one of its directors, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, sent regrets, but has emailed a question from its board meeting in New York. </p>
<p>Sandberg once worked at Google with Mayer, though the pair is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121119/confirmed-facebook-not-in-search-talks-with-yahoo/"><em>still</em> not working on a search engine</a> together.</p>
<p>Sandberg asks what was most surprising to Mayer about taking over at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Mayer says she thought the job would be hard, and her new baby would be fun. Mayer <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121001/october-surprise-yahoo-ceo-mayer-and-husband-have-baby-boy/">had her first child</a> at the end of September.</p>
<p>&#8220;The job is fun, and the baby is easy,&#8221; says Mayer.</p>
<p>Sellers wants to know how Mayer gets it all done. The answer: &#8220;Ruthlessly prioritize.&#8221;</p>
<p>She notes that that&#8217;s why she has not talked to the media at all, and why she will not be talking after this event. </p>
<p>(Well, I guess I will go back to not waiting by the phone for Yahoo PR to call back. Hi Anne! &#8212; also looking forward to not getting the holiday media party invite, which is no prob as the Googlers are throwing one the same night and they usually have organic arugula picked by elves they employ that&#8217;s <em>acutely</em> delicious.)</p>

<p><strong>8:33 pm</strong>: Sellers throws in one more question from famed investor Warren Buffett, who apparently wants to know what, if Mayer was not CEO of Yahoo, would she want to run?</p>
<p>Not Berkshire Hathaway! Mayer says she would build something herself.</p>
<p>It seems as if that is what she is doing at Yahoo, so we await the result.</p>
<p>Until then, Mayer&#8217;s mum. So to speak.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s something you haven&#8217;t seen in a while &#8212; Groupon shares rose more than 36 percent last week after Chase Coleman&#8217;s Tiger Global Management disclosed Monday that it had bought 65 million shares.</p>
<p>The well-known hedge fund and private equity firm, which has also bought a decent-sized stake in Yahoo recently, actually purchased the stock of the much-beleaguered daily deals company on November 9, according to its <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1167483/000091957412006556/d1335719_13-g.htm">filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission</a>. At the time, Groupon was at $2.76, down about 90 percent from its IPO a year ago.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s nearly a 10 percent stake overall for Tiger.</p>
<p>It seems to be part of a hedge fund party at Groupon. Paul Tudor Jones of Tudor Investments also disclosed a small buy of 150,000 shares last week &#8212; as well another from George Soros&#8217; Soros Fund Management, which recently disclosed it had bought 2.5 million shares of Groupon.</p>
<p>Groupon stock closed at $3.95 Friday, a huge improvement &#8212; though still massively off its IPO price. Its market valuation is just $2.6 billion. </p>
<p>The Chicago-based Groupon had to be happy about the purchase, which give the company &#8212; as well as its CEO and co-founder Andrew Mason &#8212; some much needed breathing space. One source close to the situation noted that Coleman is considered to be a friendly and well-regarded investor.</p>
<p>And a reassessment of Groupon by Wall Street could also help. In a note on Monday, Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Sandler wrote that he was considering an upgrade of the stock, noting that the &#8220;everything is imploding&#8221; meme around the company was not accurate. </p>
<p>Still, slower growth and management changes, as well as continued troubles in its European business, remain worries. Groupon recently <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121114/groupon-tries-out-having-a-coo-again-promotes-kal-raman/">promoted Kal Raman</a>, who had previously been SVP of global sales and operations, to COO to help stabilize leadership.</p>
<p>Still, the best medicine right now seems to be a little confidence from a rich guy, as you can see from this chart:</p>

<p>In a post today on its policy blog, Yahoo took aim at Microsoft&#8217;s controversial &#8220;Do Not Track&#8221; default in its Internet Explorer 10 browser.</p>
<p>Said Yahoo in a post titled <a href="http://www.ypolicyblog.com/policyblog/category/privacy/">&#8220;In Support of Personal Experience&#8221;</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Recently, Microsoft unilaterally decided to turn on DNT in Internet Explorer 10 by default, rather than at users&#8217; direction. In our view, this degrades the experience for the majority of users and makes it hard to deliver on our value proposition to them. It basically means that the DNT signal from IE10 doesn&#8217;t express user intent.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, Yahoo &#8220;will not recognize IE10&rsquo;s default DNT signal on Yahoo! properties at this time.&#8221;</p>
<p>Such a move should make Yahoo very popular with advertisers, most of which are publicly and privately decrying the Microsoft effort for their browser having advertising targeting and tracking turned off by default. </p>
<p>In fact, Yahoo&#8217;s statement of no-default-respect pretty much tracks on what the Digital Advertising Alliance, which represents thousands of major marketers, said recently, as well as the <a href="http://www.ana.net/content/show/id/analetter-microsoft">Association of National Advertisers</a>. </p>
<p>Both those groups and many others are seeking to kill DNT. </p>
<p>According to sources, the impetus for the Yahoo decision was CEO Marissa Mayer, a former Google exec. </p>
<p>Interestingly, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120913/google-finally-adds-do-not-track-support-in-latest-test-version-of-chrome/">Google recently added DNT support</a> to the latest version of its increasingly popular Chrome browser developer build. </p>
<p>And the third major browser, Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox, also offers a DNT product as a key feature. </p>
<p>Right now, Mayer is in discussions with the software giant about improving the weak results of its search advertising partnership, too. This should make those talks much more interesting.</p>
<p>In fact, in a longer privacy post today, titled <a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_on_the_issues/archive/2012/10/26/privacy-and-technology-in-balance.aspx">&#8220;Privacy and Technology in Balance,&#8221;</a> Microsoft&#8217;s general counsel Brad Smith noted:</p>
<p>&#8220;Just because the signal is turned on doesn&#8217;t mean that a consumer wants no services that involve tracking. It means instead that consumers are empowered to make their own choices, including selecting services that involve tracking from advertisers and ad networks they trust.&#8221;</p>

Unfortunately, because discussions have not yet resulted in a final standard for how to implement DNT, the current DNT signal can easily be abused. Recently, Microsoft unilaterally decided to turn on DNT in Internet Explorer 10 by default, rather than at users&#8217; direction. In our view, this degrades the experience for the majority of users and makes it hard to deliver on our value proposition to them. It basically means that the DNT signal from IE10 doesn&#8217;t express user intent.</p>
<p>Ultimately, we believe that DNT must map to user intent &#8212; not to the intent of one browser creator, plug-in writer, or third-party software service. Therefore, although Yahoo! will continue to offer Ad Interest Manager and other tools, we will not recognize IE10&#8242;s default DNT signal on Yahoo! properties at this time.</p>
<p>Yahoo! is committed to working with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to reach a DNT standard that both satisfies user expectations and provides the best Internet experience possible. We will closely evaluate our support for DNT as the industry makes progress in reaching a meaningful, transparent standard to promote choice, reduce signal abuse, and deliver great personalized experiences for our users.</p></blockquote>

<p>Yahoo&#8217;s David Hantman, who has been its deputy general counsel and VP of global public policy, is taking a similar job at the online rentals start-up Airbnb, according to an internal email memo he sent today.</p>
<p>The job move is interesting, given the many regulatory issues that the San Francisco-based company faces in local markets as it grows.</p>
<p>Hantman is already coming out swinging in his internal memo to Yahoo staffers about the departure:</p>
<p>&#8220;[Airbnb has] some huge challenges with a few antiquated laws in their biggest markets, so my job will be to help them convince governments that allowing people to rent out their own homes or apartments should not be a problem, and that in fact it is great for the economy and for the tons of people that can only pay their mortgage or rent through the extra income they get from airbnb &#8230; As always, I like to be on the right side of history, and I believe in the mission and the team over there.&#8221;</p>
<p>An Airbnb spokewoman (also a former Yahoo) confirmed the hiring. (I did not even try Yahoo&#8217;s current PR personage, as I already have the memo and she never calls back, anyway.)</p>

I am already assisting in the process to select my successor, which will hopefully be complete soon.</p>
<p>This is a bittersweet departure for me, since I leave behind an awesome team and a company I love and believe in. But while I have loved every day of my 5+ years at Yahoo!, I am very excited to return to my startup roots. When I graduated law school way back in 1994, the first thing I did was to co-found an Internet company with a couple of friends. That company eventually went public, but I walked away for my Capitol Hill dream long before it had a viable business model (or really anything other than a few of us trying to convince the world that the Internet was going to be awesome someday). For the last five years, I have had the privilege of working for and among my heroes &#8212; people who turned a simple list of neat web sites in 1995 into a company that serves 700 million users and helped revolutionize the way people get and share information around the world.</p>
<p>Now, though, I have a second chance at the startup life &#8212; this time at a company whose brilliant founders have already proved it to be an amazing and disruptive business. I am excited to join an incredible team at airbnb and, hopefully, to be a small part of their future success. Airbnb is maybe the most successful little known company in the world. Millions of people have used the service to rent rooms or entire apartments &#8212; even private islands &#8212; as an alternative to hotels. They have some huge challenges with a few antiquated laws in their biggest markets, so my job will be to help them convince governments that allowing people to rent out their own homes or apartments should not be a problem, and that in fact it is great for the economy and for the tons of people that can only pay their mortgage or rent through the extra income they get from airbnb. For hundreds of years families have been taking in boarders or renting out extra space, and this service is just bringing that process into the 21st century, at a time when it is more needed than ever. As always, I like to be on the right side of history, and I believe in the mission and the team over there.</p>
