AMD Cuts Guidance on Chipmaking Troubles

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices just reduced its outlook for the current quarter, saying it now expects sales to grow in the 4 to 6 percent range, down from prior guidance of 10 percent or more. Also, gross margins will be 44 to 45 percent, lower than previously forecast. AMD blamed manufacturing difficulties at its former fabrication arm, GlobalFoundries, for the reduced expectations. AMD stock was down almost 8 percent in after-hours trading.

The Tech Valley is located in eastern New York and, though it’s not as well known as its sexier West Coast cousin, it is becoming a hot spot for tech companies.

Abu Dhabi's Ambitions for Chip Manufacturing Hub

Over the last three decades, players in the cutthroat semiconductor industry have watched chip production move from the U.S. and Japan to South Korea, and then to Singapore and Taiwan. They’ve also witnessed over the past few years production move slowly to low-cost places like China where even chip giant Intel took a big gamble and set up an advanced manufacturing base in Dalian. But now, oil-rich United Arab Emirates wants in on some of the action with its ambitious plan to build a chip manufacturing hub in the country by 2030. Could it succeed?

AMD Posts Sharply Higher Sales

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. posted a narrower second-quarter loss on sharply higher revenue and margins. The chip maker’s improved results mirrored the strong earnings report Tuesday by much-larger rival Intel Corp., which credited in part increased spending by businesses. AMD, which sells chips that serve as calculating engines in personal computers, returned to profitability in the fourth quarter after three years of losses.
