Here’s a video I beg you not to miss, if you missed it last week in the holiday swirl. Made by a talented London production company called The Theory, using Google Street View, stop-action photography and a toy, it is titled “Address Is Approximate.”

There is nothing approximate about its success; the video has garnered many million of views since its recent debut and gained much notice for its makers.

Enjoy:

Looking back, 2010 "the year of" a lot of things--the tablet, the smartphone, the tweet and location. But it was also a year of complete silliness in tech.

According to 2009′s safely-looking-ahead-at-the-year-to-come articles, 2010 was to be “a year of social media convergence.” It was to be a year in which The Cloud “became part of the everyday lexicon of business” and “a year of invention and innovation.” 2010 was to be not just “the year of the tablet,” but also “the year of the smartphone,” “the year of the tweet” and “the year of location.” Above all, 2010 was to be “a year of significant developments” and generally “a busy year for technology.”

And I suppose it was that. But for me, 2010 was a year like any of year–one not to be taken too seriously. Because if you can’t laugh at Eric Schmidt telling critics of Google Street View to “just move,” Apple telling people that their grip–not the iPhone 4′s antenna–is faulty, or Oracle’s samurai CEO Larry Ellison in a kimono, then, really, what’s the point?

It may be true, as my colleague Peter Kafka noted earlier this week, that there’s little point in pretending we know what’s going to happen in the year ahead, but the year about to pass remains good for a laugh.

Google Inc. (GOOG) said it will introduce its “Street View” service of integrated maps and photographs in 20 German cities by the end of this year, drawing criticism from government officials here skeptical of the Internet company’s regard for personal privacy.
Ilse Aigner, Germany’s consumer protection minister, said Tuesday she is concerned Google won’t give people enough time to request that street-level pictures of their homes be removed before Street View goes online.

“It’s critical for me that as promised all the dissents that are filed are acted upon,” Ms. Aigner said in a statement. Consumer protection groups were broadly skeptical of Google’s plans as well.

In the 20 cities, which include Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt, users have until approximately Sept. 15 to request that the image of their home blurred, and therefore unrecognizable, Lena Wagner, a Google spokeswoman said.

At some point, scientists think, you’ll be able to point a lens at almost any object and get information about what you’re seeing. Imagine seeing a shirt you like and learning quickly who makes it, where it’s sold and how much it costs. Or seeing a building and learning its history and whether you can rent space in it.

Google (GOOG) is among the companies working on this technology–known as augmented reality–and its Google Goggles application for Android phones provides a very early look at some of the possibilities. The app, which is free, allows users to take pictures of things like paintings and landmarks and automatically conduct a search based on the image.

In a test, the app was able to identify brands, two-dimensional artwork and things like buildings from Google Street View. Google Goggles has a big “wow” factor, but it’s still a long way from a sci-fi style world with data at your fingertips.

By now, Google’s (GOOG) cars have driven down roads around the world — and in some places, they’re sparking concerns about just what information they are collecting.

So the Internet-search giant is opening up a bit about the data it compiles. Google is trying to address criticisms that have been leveled against it in European countries in particular and provided details about Street View cars in a post on its European Public Policy Blog on Tuesday. The company said it had discussed the information before but that it wanted to make it more easily accessible.

Privacy officials from 10 countries, including seven in Europe, sent Google a letter earlier this month outlining several concerns. The letter said Google’s Street View service was “launched in some countries without due consideration of privacy and data protection laws and cultural norms” and said “there is continued concern about the adequacy of the information you provide before the images are captured.”

Google Maps’s Street View, which launched in 2007, shows street-level maps of some cities. The couple, Christine and Aaron Boring, sued Google in April (our Law Blog colleagues wrote about it), accusing it of negligence, unjust enrichment and trespassing, in addition to privacy violation, because photos of their home appeared in Street View.

The judge, Amy Hay, said in her ruling that “While it is easy to imagine that many whose property appears on Google’s virtual maps resent the privacy implications, it is hard to believe that any–other than the most exquisitely sensitive–would suffer shame or humiliation.”

That’s the day iPhone 2.2 is rumored to arrive at market. And when, or if, it does, it’s expected to include some slick new features. Among them:

Enhancements to Google Maps, including support for Google Street View, plus bus schedules and walking directions

Support for over-the-air podcast updates via the iTunes Store

An app-scoring feature that allows users to rate applications purchased from the the App Store before deleting them

Support for line-in audio via the iPhone’s headphone jack

Wonderful additions to the platform, all of them. Of course, there are still quite a few missing. MMS support would be nice, wouldn’t it? As would support for Flash and the ability to compose messages in landscape mode.

And what about cut-and-paste? Seriously, at this point, it’s almost like Apple (AAPL) is purposely withholding it, out of spite.
