Apple on Jailbreak Ruling: Go Ahead and Brick Your iPhone. See If We Care.

Sure, jailbreaking your iPhone no longer violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, but that doesn’t mean Apple supports it. So if you want to modify your iPhone to run unauthorized software, you’re welcome to do so, but not without risk or consequence. As Apple reminds us today, jailbreaking voids the iPhone’s warranty, which could prove problematic if your tinkering bricks it.

It Took Serious Hounding to Get Apple to Show “Black Lab”

Apple does not screw around with antenna design. I know this because on Friday I was part of a small group of journalists given a tour of the company’s antenna design and testing facilities, which are as impressive and confounding to an outsider as you would expect them to be. The facilities are referred to internally as “black labs,” because their purpose has never been publicly disclosed. Quipped an Apple PR rep, “The existence of this lab used to be secret. Now it’s not.” And as Friday’s revelations went, that was perhaps the most interesting of all.

Looks like Apple will hold a special event in March, after all–but its focus won’t be on desktops. This morning the company distributed invitations for a March 17 gathering at its Cupertino Town Hall to discuss the iPhone OS 3.0 and an updated software development kit.

New From Apple: iPod Shuffle HAL Edition

The Apple Store went down for updating early this morning and when it returned, it featured an all-new iPod shuffle. Nearly half the size of its predecessor, this third-generation player features a new aluminum design and a new VoiceOver feature that enables it to say the names of song titles, artists and playlists outloud in 14 languages.
