February Expected to Be a Great Month for Mac Sales

February 2009 was not the greatest month for Mac sales. They were down 16 percent year over year and 10 percent from January. And while that may have been unfortunate at the time, it’s good news for Apple and its investors today, because it provides a particularly soft number for comparing with Mac sales in February 2010.

Twitter’s Annual Growth Rate as of January: 1,107 Percent

If Twitter’s astonishing month-over-month growth rate hit a ceiling last fall, the microblogging service has clearly broken through it. According to new metrics from comScore, Twitter.com saw 73.5 million unique visitors in January, up eight percent from the 65.2 million who visited it in December 2009.

Eric Schmidt’s tender feelings for Apple won’t stop Google from competing directly with Apple’s iPhone: The company spent much of the time on its Q4 earnings call discussing its large mobile ambitions–without talking about specifics, of course. Meanwhile, the search giant posted a big jump in quarterly revenue. But not enough for twitchy investors, who are pushing shares down in after-hours trading.

No doubt about it, more consumers are Googling with Bing. According to the latest stats from research firm Nielsen, Microsoft’s new search engine is growing faster than its arch rival’s–much faster.

Online Ad Spending Obviously Still Lousy

No surprise, this: The econalypse continues to weigh heavily on online ad spending. Worldwide spending on Internet advertising declined by five percent in the second quarter of this year, slipping to $13.9 billion from $14.7 billion, according to research firm IDC.

I’m pecking this out from the bowels of the New World Stage, where Day Two of the Twitter-centric 140 Character Conference is meandering along. But the most interesting Twitter-related news is coming from outside the conference: Data from comScore showing that Twitter-related search has become both measurable and meaningful. Well, measurable, at least.
