Firefox 4 First-Day Downloads Outstrip IE9's, Fall Short of Firefox 3 Record

According to Mozilla’s official counter page, Firefox 4 has been downloaded more than seven million times. Impressive, but its first-day numbers were still short of the Firefox 3 release in June 2008, which actually earned a Guinness World Record for its eight million downloads in 24 hours.

Casual Contestant Shatters Texting Speed Record

Melissa Thompson, 27, of Salford, England, was out shopping over the weekend when the folks at a Samsung booth persuaded her to have a go at texting the official 26-word sentence used in determining the Guinness World Record speed title. Despite proclaiming her fingers out of shape, Thompson took a Swype-equipped Samsung Galaxy S in hand, and when she was done, the existing record of 35.54 seconds–set earlier this year by Franklin Page of Seattle–lay in tatters. Thompson took just 25.94 seconds to type “The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.”

Pre-Mature Elaboration: Sprint Cancels Palm Pre Offer

If there’s a Guinness World Record for shortest-lived promotional offer by a wireless carrier, Sprint’s surely a front-runner for it. Just six or so hours after offering a $100 service credit to new subscribers who purchase a Palm Pre and port their numbers over from another carrier, Sprint canceled it. Does Adobe Deserve the Most Downloads Record?

Adobe Systems may have a claim to the world record for most software downloads in a day–if the company wants to push its case. Over the summer, the Mozilla Foundation, which makes the Firefox Web browser, started a campaign to break the Guinness World Record for the most times a piece of software was downloaded in a single day.
