<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111027/sonys-playstation-not-concerned-that-the-vita-will-miss-the-holidays/">Though it won&#8217;t arrive in the U.S. until Feb. 22</a>, Sony&#8217;s newest handheld gaming device has stumbled out of the starting gate in Japan. The device sold 321,400 units in two days, but on Monday, Sony <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/complaints-about-sony-playstation-vita-arise-after-japan-launch/">issued an apologetic statement</a> after complaints emerged that the Vita was freezing and crashing.</p>
<p>But, for what it&#8217;s worth, there is a common thread between the two products: Sony&#8217;s new gadget was developed in part by one of the original creators of one of the most successful consumer-electronics devices of all time.</p>
<p><a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/12/23/five-things-we-learned-at-the-japan-ps-vita-launch/#utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PSBlog+%28PlayStation.Blog%29">As the PlayStation blog reports</a> today, the look and feel of the Vita was designed by Takashi Sogabe of the Sony Corporate Design Centre. It also notes that Sogabe, who has been at the company for 27 years, worked on the original Walkman.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-156670" title="sony_takashi sogabe" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/sony_takashi-sogabe.png" alt="" width="180" height="270" />While it probably isn&#8217;t entirely accurate that he worked on the original Walkman (since it came before Sogabe&#8217;s time), <a href="http://www.scei.co.jp/interview/interview6_e.html">a bio on Sony&#8217;s Web site</a> gives him credit for a &#8220;See-through Walkman,&#8221; and a &#8220;Beautiful Walkman.&#8221; He also worked on the PlayStation 3 and Sony&#8217;s e-reader.</p>
<p>The PlayStation blog will be posting a full interview with Sogabe later, but today&#8217;s post did offer some details.</p>
<p>Sogabe said the design team came up with various versions of the Vita, including one with a sliding back, and another that snapped shut like a clamshell.</p>
<p>He also said that they tried to incorporate two touchpads in place of the dual analog sticks, but that they weren&#8217;t accurate enough. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For consumers who were early purchasers of Nintendo 3DS, the gaming company’s 3-D handheld device, Christmas came early this year.</p>
<p>When Nintendo first announced a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904823804576501984253248152.html">big 3DS price drop</a> this past summer due to sluggish sales, it <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/fttgI7OsQIB1tZqRMa5CtT45KLrmNkAY">promised</a> early buyers of the device &#8212; Nintendo 3DS “Ambassadors” &#8212; that they would be able to download new NES Virtual Console games at no charge before the games became available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. <img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/Nintendo3DS-380x250.png" alt="" title="Nintendo3DS" width="380" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-154337" /></p>
<p>Starting today, even more free games are available to 3DS buyers. This time, they’re Game Boy Advance titles &#8212; remember Game Boy? &#8212; including The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Wario Land 4, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mario Kart: Super Circuit and a handful of others, numbering 10 in total.</p>
<p>The games are available to customers in the U.S., Europe and Japan a day ahead of the highly anticipated <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903927204576570133159923122.html">Sony Vita handheld launch</a> in Japan.</p>
<p>The Game Boy Advance is a handheld gaming console introduced by Nintendo in 2001, more than a decade after the original Game Boy was launched and a few years ahead of the popular Nintendo DS&#8217;s debut. The device had a 32-bit processor and was described at the time as Nintendo’s fastest-selling game system ever. The last new title for the Game Boy Advance was brought to market in 2008.</p>
<p>For the 3DS, Nintendo can’t give away games fast enough. The freebie games are part of an overall push to sell more of the handheld unit, which had struggled to gain traction since its launch in March of this year. Nintendo said the 3DS <a href=" http://allthingsd.com/20111201/will-new-games-and-pink-hues-give-nintendo-3ds-a-needed-boost/">got a much-needed boost</a>, driving hardware sales up 49 percent, when Nintendo’s Super Mario 3D Land game hit the market in late November as part of a bundle.</p>
<p>Also, to give credit where it’s due, 3DS is kind of a big deal in Australia, according to the <a href="http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/games/blogs/screenplay/3ds-sets-sales-record-as-games-finally-arrive-20111215-1owos.html">Sydney Morning Herald</a>!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nintendo&#8217;s 3DS got off to a rocky start when it launched in March of this year, so much so that it ultimately resulted in a price slash.</p>
<p>But the 3-D handheld gaming device has gotten a boost from recent game releases, and the gaming giant hopes two more items will keep the hardware&#8217;s momentum going for the holiday season.  </p>

<p>This Sunday, Nintendo will release Mario Kart 7 for 3DS. It&#8217;s the second game in the Mario franchise aimed at the portable device in the past two weeks. Retailing for $39.99, Mario Kart 7 includes new courses and kart abilities and supports the 3DS StreetPass feature, which allows users to wirelessly connect to other &#8220;Mii&#8221; characters as they pass each other on the street or are in the vicinity of each other.</p>
<p>The company also plans to release a pink version of the 3DS, bundled with one of its Nintendogs + Cats games. The pink 3DS will cost $169.99 in the U.S., the same price as the standard Nintendo 3DS system. Nintendo had previously said a pink version was aimed at girls (<em>sigh</em>, but they do like lots of other colors, too). </p>
<p>The Nintendo 3DS, the company&#8217;s first 3-D portable gaming handset, hit the U.S. in March, at a price of $249.99. The device has an autostereoscopic screen &#8212; which means glasses aren&#8217;t required to see the 3-D imagery &#8212; and a depth slider that adjusts the intensity of the 3-D.</p>
<p>Consumers were less than thrilled by the 3DS, with many citing vision problems and high game prices, forcing Nintendo to later reduce the price. The move resulted in a 260 percent sales jump, with Nintendo selling 235,000 units in August, ranking it the second-best-selling piece of gaming hardware in the U.S. that month.  </p>
<p>The 3DS got another boost when Nintendo&#8217;s Super Mario 3D Land game became available Thanksgiving week, as part of a bundle with a red 3DS. Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime said the game was the fastest-selling portable Mario game in Nintendo&#8217;s history, and that interest in the game drove hardware sales up 49 percent.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe more and more that software drives hardware,&#8221; Fils-Aime said. </p>
<p>Fils-Aime said Nintendo continues to invest in 3-D technology in terms of content, but for now, consumers shouldn&#8217;t hold their breath for a next-generation 3DS. </p>
<p>&#8220;I wouldn’t expect a complete redesign of the hardware in the near-term,&#8221; he said. </p>
<p>In addition to the new pink model, Nintendo 3DS is available in the U.S. in blue, black and red. A white version of the device is sold in Japan, although Fils-Aime noted that Nintendo&#8217;s white handheld DS and DSi devices haven&#8217;t sold as well in the U.S. as other colors have.</p>

The TouchPad, Veer and Pre3 all sport silver HP logos and &#8220;HP&#8221; as a prefix, not Palm.</p>
<p>In fact, the only place to really find the Palm brand these days is at <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/">the Palm.com domain</a>, which, while festooned with HP branding, still includes &#8220;Palm USA&#8221; in its page titles. Evidently this is what HP meant when it said the Palm brand would &#8220;move into the background.&#8221;</p>
<p>Judging from Wednesday&#8217;s event, the storied Palm brand isn&#8217;t even a sub-brand of HP. It&#8217;s just a handle for a particular division of the company, though HP insists it&#8217;s keeping it around.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our future strategy is to continue to build the HP brand in the marketplace,&#8221; a company spokesman told me. &#8220;Palm is a great brand that is synonymous with mobile innovation and we are delighted to have it in our portfolio of brands allowing us future options.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a nice enough thought, though it&#8217;s hard to see HP ever reviving the Palm brand in the future&#8211;not after it&#8217;s rebranded the company&#8217;s products as its own and announced plans to use them to build &#8220;the largest installed base of connected users in the world.&#8221; If it succeeds at that, will Palm really be a future branding option? Doubtful.</p>
<p>In that sense, Wednesday&#8217;s event wasn&#8217;t just a showcase for some slick new webOS hardware, but a eulogy to the pioneering company that made it possible, the company that created the market for handheld devices and shaped that first early vision of mobile computing&#8230;.</p>
<p>Eh, Oldsmobile was a great brand too, I suppose.</p>

<p>Speaking to investment analysts on Friday, Mr. Iwata fielded a question about his impressions of Sony’s new handheld game machine, which was unveiled on Thursday and is seen a competitor to Nintendo’s own forthcoming portable game system, the 3DS.</p>
<p>Mr. Iwata offered his standard response that it’s not his place to comment on products from other companies. Nintendo is not concerned about what the competition does, he added, because the company’s singular focus is to make its products as appealing as possible to customers.</p>
<p>Then he offered another reason why he doesn’t like to comment on other company’s products. About a year ago, he was asked at another meeting with analysts about his thoughts on Apple Inc. iPad -– a newly-announced product at the time.</p>

<p>On the home console side of the business, there&#8217;s Microsoft and Sony with new motion-detection systems similar to the Wii. On the Japanese game maker&#8217;s popular handheld side of the business, there&#8217;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110127/game-changer-sony-uncrates-next-generation-portable/">Sony&#8217;s new offering&#8211;announced today</a>&#8211;and dozens of smartphone makers, from Apple to HTC.</p>
<p>All of that added up to fewer sales of Nintendo&#8217;s Wii and DS platforms in the third quarter, and there&#8217;s not much relief in sight.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2051" title="mariocupcakes" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/mariocupcakes-275x206.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="206" />Nintendo cut its sales forecast for the Wii console by 1.5 million units to 16 million for the year. It also lowered its DS sales forecast by 1 million to 17.5 million units (but raised it to 22.5 million units, including the sales of the upcoming release of its new handheld, which will offer a 3-D experience that doesn&#8217;t require glasses).</p>
<p>Today, Nintendo reported net sales for the nine-month period ended Dec. 31 of 807.9 billion yen ($9.8 billion), down from 1.18 trillion a year ago. Net income shrank to 49.6 billion ($603 million) from 192.6 billion in 2009.</p>
<p>For the same period in 2010, Nintendo said it sold 15.7 million DS units, with about half of those sold in the U.S. That&#8217;s down from 23.4 million in 2009. The company also said it sold 13.7 million Wii units worldwide in 2010, fewer than the 17 million sold in 2009.</p>
<p>Its financial forecast remains unchanged from revised figures released in September.</p>
<p>The company said <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2011/110127e.pdf">in its earnings release</a> that &#8220;Nintendo continues to pursue its basic strategy of &#8216;Gaming Population Expansion&#8217; by offering compelling products that anyone can enjoy, regardless of age, gender, or gaming experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>But it seems that is also the goal of others, like Microsoft, which has been able to rapidly expand the audience for the Xbox by releasing the hands-free Kinect accessory. It <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110105/microsoft-sells-8-million-kinects-well-not-really-but-close-enough/">sold eight million in its first 60 days on market</a>. Sony has also released the Move, and today announced a next-generation handheld gaming system that beats Nintendo&#8217;s upcoming 3DS at least on one front&#8211;it comes with wireless 3G.</p>

<p>The 3DS will be available in the U.S. on March 27 for a competitively priced $249.99. The handheld game player&#8217;s big selling point is that it offers 3-D without the need for special glasses. The device will come in Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue. Prices will vary outside the U.S.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1744" title="Nintendo_3DS_Aqua_Blue" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Nintendo_3DS_Aqua_Blue_webready-275x275.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="275" />At an event today in New York, Nintendo revealed more of the device&#8217;s capabilities, and many of them sound like features found on the iPhone and many other smartphones.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s ability to turn its MP3 players and phones into portable gaming devices has been a competitive threat to Nintendo, which with the 3DS release looks like it is willing to recognize.</p>
<p>For example, the new 3DS has an online store, called the eShop, where users will be able to download games. It also has three cameras and a built-in gyro, so the device can be tilted and turned to affect game play. It will also have location-based features, where users can elect to receive new content from Nintendo or other 3DS users as they travel around. The feature can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots when in sleep mode to collect this content or to function as a pedometer, which counts a user&#8217;s steps.</p>
<p>Additionally, users can take pictures with the camera, or listen to music and surf the Web on an Internet browser, which will come soon in a system upgrade. Users will also be able to play with one another by exchanging a simple code. About 30 games are expected to be available by June for the device.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s some of these more nuanced features that could make the device more competitive, but it&#8217;s the 3-D interactivity that Nintendo is really pushing, and so far consumers have not gravitated to 3-D as a reason to upgrade a TV, so it&#8217;s unclear whether it will be a draw for the 3DS.</p>
<p>Nintendo&#8217;s enthusiasm for 3-D also suffered a blow when it issued a warning that it is not healthy for kids under the age of 6 to view 3-D images. Nintendo says the impact from that should be minimal because the 3-D effect can be ratcheted up or down, and even turned off completely.</p>

Called the Pocket Casino, it&#8217;s a handheld device a bit bigger than a smartphone that can be used for real gambling&#8211;poker, blackjack, slots, even football. The only catch is that while it can be taken anywhere, you can wager and play only while on the casino floor at either the Palazzo or Venetian. I decided to plunk down $40 and give it a try.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Now that the year has wrapped up, Nintendo is claiming to have broken two industry-wide records in 2010 to make its portable DS franchise and the Wii two of the best-selling game systems of all time.</p>
<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/nintendowii-275x236.jpg" alt="" title="nintendowii" width="275" height="236" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1136" /></p>
<p>The company said the portable DS handheld, which originally came out in November 2004, <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110104005752/en/Nintendo-DS-Wii-Set-U.S.-Sales-Records">has sold an accumulated 47 million devices to become the U.S.&#8217;s best-selling videogame system of all time</a>.</p>
<p>Additionally, the Wii sold more than seven million game consoles in 2010, marking the third consecutive year of such volumes&#8211;a feat Nintendo says has never been accomplished in the history of game systems.</p>
<p>The figures are impressive for the game company, which has always focused on a family-friendly niche, with lovable characters bouncing around in imaginary worlds, rather than on complex multiplayer games focused on violence and intense graphics.</p>
<p>But whether it will be enough to sustain the company against rivals such as the Xbox is unclear.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101209/microsofts-kinect-drives-industry-wide-gains-in-november/">Xbox has been the best-selling console for the past few months</a>, a position that was supercharged in November when Microsoft released the Kinect, which allows users to play hands-free, similarly to how the Wii operates but taken to the next level.</p>
<p>Sales of the Kinect accessories have been strong, and <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101220/microsoft-eyes-wider-net-as-xbox-turns-to-entertainment/">have helped expand Microsoft&#8217;s audience beyond the hard-core gamer</a>.</p>
<p>Nintendo is not expected to release a new console in the short term, and critics are unclear about the 3DS, which is the new portable handheld coming that boosts 3-D images without the need for glasses.</p>
<p>Nintendo said it&#8217;s coming to the U.S. in March, and more details will be available soon. <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110103/gaming-at-ces-to-span-kinect-like-controls-for-pcs-but-nothing-major-from-nintendo/">Nintendo is attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week</a> for the first time in 16 years, but it&#8217;s not expected to make big news at the show.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s unclear whether the 3DS can compete as a standalone gaming device as other multipurpose devices&#8211;like Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as other smartphones&#8211;gain market share.</p>
<p>Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime begs to differ when forecasting the trends of the future: “When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed.&#8221;</p>

<p>While everyone is considering whether to brine or deep-fry the turkey this week, <strong>All Things Digital</strong> HQ will be busy with our preparations for <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>.</p>
<p>That includes setting the program, which takes place in two weeks and will open with an evening interview with Google&#8217;s Andy Rubin (pictured here).</p>
<p>As the search giant&#8217;s mobile chief and principal force and creator of its Android operating system, Rubin is responsible for the ongoing development of the major rival to the Apple iPhone.</p>
<p>Many have challenged Android, including a recent jab from Apple CEO Steve Jobs, questioning its overall experience and whether or not it&#8217;s actually open.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Rubin and Android have proven to be a disruptive and fast-growing force in the mobile space, aiming for dominance akin to Microsoft&#8217;s on the desktop.</p>
<p>Ironic? Yes.</p>
<p>Rubin started as an engineer at Apple and later worked at General Magic, where he participated in developing Magic Cap, an operating system and interface for handheld devices. When Magic Cap failed, Rubin joined Artemis Research, founded by Steve Perlman, which became WebTV and was eventually acquired by Microsoft.</p>
<p>After several years, Rubin left to found another smartphone effort called Danger, which was also acquired by Microsoft, in 2008.</p>
<p>Disillusionment with his ouster as CEO of Danger motivated him to found Android, which was later acquired by Google.</p>
<p>Now, it seems Rubin is poised to make good on his first efforts at making a truly smart smartphone ubiquitous.</p>
<p>And he is only one of many of the industry heavyweight speakers at <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>, among them: Dan Hesse, president and CEO of Sprint Nextel; Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of Research in Motion; Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard; Joe Belfiore, vice president of Windows Phone Program Management at Microsoft; Jon Rubinstein of Palm, now owned by Hewlett-Packard; Foursquare CEO and co-founder Dennis Crowley; Google advertising czar Susan Wojcicki; and Glenn Lurie, president of Emerging Devices for AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>Plus, there is also one more big speaker we&#8217;ll be announcing soon, so stay tuned.</p>
<p><strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> will be held at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco on December 6 and 7.</p>
<p>It represents the very first brand extension of our flagship <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, now in its ninth year of grilling the big names in tech and media to sold-out analog audiences and scores more on the Web.</p>
<p>And, as always, there will be no PowerPoints, no panels and definitely no pontificating. What there will be are unrehearsed, unscripted and unexpected interviews, where real news is often broken.</p>
<p>But, unlike big <strong>D</strong>, <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> is topic-focused, drilling down deeply into the ubiquity of mobile technology and devices, and its implications for brands, organizations and consumers worldwide.</p>

<p>In September, retail sales of new video game gear was down eight percent from a year ago to $1.18 billion, according to market research firm NPD Group. Hardware sales were down 19 percent and software sales were down six percent, although accessory sales were up 13 percent. I would note that sales were up from $818.9 million in August.</p>
<p>NPD has revamped its monthly reports on the industry, in particular stressing that the report only includes sales of new goods at retail, and does not include sales of used games, rentals, mobile games, social networking games or digitally distributed games. NPD also has stopped breaking out sales data for the individual handheld and console platforms, and it has stopped providing unit sales information for software games.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Making videogame consoles is not for the faint of heart. It’s a high-risk, high-reward business that can often leave the losers awash in red ink. So it was surprising to hear that Panasonic Corp., the company making a lot of noise about how it plans to focus on green energy businesses, is developing a new handheld videogame system for online game players.</p>
<p>The videogame industry is littered with the corpses of failed portable game systems. Anyone still using a Nokia (NOK) N-Gage? How about a Sega Game Gear or a TurboExpress?</p>
<p>We got a first peek at the new device, which is called the Jungle, via a Web site that appears to be part of a very un-Panasonic like guerrilla marketing campaign. In a jokey tone, the Jungle’s Web site calls the device’s display “kick ass” and then tells visitors to “stay very closely tuned unless you’re tone deaf.” (For those curious, the Jungle looks like a shrunk-down portable DVD player with a built-in keyboard.)</p>
<p>If Panasonic (PC) needs to know how tough the handheld game market is, all they have to do is look at the struggles facing the current market leader. Nintendo Co.’s DS handheld has been one of the best-selling game systems of all time since its debut in 2004, but demand for the device has recently slowed. It’s been plagued by piracy and a challenge from simple games played on mobile phones.</p>

<p>April was another lousy month for the videogame industry. With overall revenue down 26 percent and hardware down 37 percent, it was the worst monthly year-over-year sales decline since last July, according to research house The NPD Group. It was also the 10th time in the last 13 months that sales have fallen year-over-year.  </p>

<li>Nintendo sold 277,2000 Wiis, down from 557,500 in March and 340,000 a year ago. The company sold 440,800 Nintendo DS&#8217;s, down from 700,800 in March and 1.04 million a year ago.</li>
<li>Microsoft sold 185,400 Xbox 360s, down from 338,400 in March, but up from 175,000 a year ago.</li>
<li>Sony sold 180,800 PlayStation 3s, down from 313,900 in March,  but up from 127,000 a year ago. And it sold 65,500 PSPs, down from 119,900 in March and 116,000 a year ago.</li>

<p>What’s driving the drops? Blame the portable gaming industry, which contributed more than its fair share to the industry decline, said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. </p>
<p>&#8220;The portable business across hardware, software and accessories accounted for 25 percent of total industry dollar sales in April,&#8221; Frazier explained. &#8220;But declines in portable sales compared to April &rsquo;09 accounted for 61 percent of the total industry decrease.&#8221;</p>
<p>That’s just abysmal, even if April is traditionally the slowest month of the year for videogame sales. Consider this: At 440,800, sales of the Nintendo DS tanked by more than 50 percent from more than one million last April. </p>
<p>So what’s going on? Perhaps consumers are postponing new portable game system purchases in anticipation of Nintendo’s new 3DS. Or perhaps they’re finding that their smartphones make fine gaming devices.</p>
<p>It’s not yet clear. But what is clear, and painfully so, is that the hardware refresh promised by Sony (SNE) and Microsoft (MSFT), which are adding new motion technology to their players, and Nintendo, which is debuting the 3-D version of its DS handheld, can’t come soon enough.</p>

<p>Last week, BoomTown was in Washington, D.C., my old stomping grounds for 15 years, from attending Georgetown University as an undergraduate to covering the beginnings of the Internet at the Washington Post.</p>
<p>I miss a lot of things about living there, but most definitely not the poisonous political partisanship that you get sucked into from the minute you arrive.</p>
<p>Most recently, for example, it was ugly battles over financial reform, some tough remarks by President Barack Obama toward the GOP and&#8211;I swear&#8211;the &#8220;controversy&#8221; over some airbrushing of House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi on a magazine cover.</p>
<p>In other words, it does not take much for the denizens there to descend into the mud-slinging swamp the city was built on.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s almost a relief to be in D.C. rather than in California, given how increasingly hostile the atmosphere is getting as a range of companies wrestle over a range of issues both key and trivial.</p>
<p>The hostilities especially center on the three main powers of Silicon Valley today: Google (GOOG), Apple (AAPL) and Facebook.</p>
<p>And, specifically, the conflicts include Apple versus Google and Adobe (ADBE) and HTC and the First Amendment; Google versus Apple and Facebook and Microsoft (MSFT) and the Federal Trade Commission and&#8211;oh, yes&#8211;China; and Facebook versus Google and Twitter and anyone who gets in the way of its Manifest Destiny of Like-buttoning the Web.</p>
<p>Even Yahoo (YHOO) is entering the fray, with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100430/yahoo-ceo-trash-talks-web-rivals-but-that-wont-stop-the-companys-troubling-brain-drain">CEO Carol Bartz taking please-don&#8217;t-forget-us shots</a> at Google and Facebook recently.</p>
<p>The Apple shooting match with Adobe over its Flash video technology is perhaps the most riveting, especially because it is the computer giant&#8217;s CEO, Steve Jobs, personally and relentlessly conducting the assault.</p>
<p>Jobs called <a href="http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/">Adobe technology shoddy</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100411/exclusive-video-adobe-cto-lynch-smacks-back-at-apples-protectionist-strategy-calling-it-bad-for-consumers-but-hell-swing-chickens-if-forced">Adobe execs called Jobs controlling</a>, the blogosphere erupted.</p>

<p>While issues around the use of Flash are a lot more complex, of course, they illustrate just how much the digital sector is at a critical inflection point.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true as the game moves from the laptop/desktop, Web-centric world to one more social, mobile and focused on innovative new devices, such as smartphones and tablets.</p>
<p>This means the potential for a shift in power, obviously&#8211;which, in turn, means more wrangling among and between the digital powers-that-be.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the top of mind as the next <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference approaches in less than a month. In our eighth foray out, there have never been more overt power struggles among the various players who will be onstage.</p>
<p>Last year, in our opening essay for <strong>D7</strong>, titled <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090526/welcome-to-web-30">&#8220;Welcome to Web 3.0,&#8221;</a> we made a prediction.</p>
<p>&#8220;So what&#8217;s the seminal development that&#8217;s ushering in the era of Web 3.0? It’s the real arrival, after years of false predictions, of the thin client, running clean, simple software, against cloud-based data and services,&#8221; we wrote, specifically referencing the growing popularity of Apple’s iPod and iPhone as the harbingers of this important trend.</p>
<p>We continued: &#8220;But this is not just about one company, one platform or even one form factor. No, this new phenomenon is about handheld computers from many companies, with software platforms and distribution mechanisms tightly tied to cloud-based services, whether they are multi-player games, e-commerce offerings or corporate databases.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking back over the last year, we think we got it pretty right, as companies of all kinds and in all arenas raced to be part of the social, mobile, cloud-centered action.</p>
<p>This fusion and, really, collision of key trends will be at the heart of what we’ll be focusing on at <strong>D8</strong> as the major companies in tech and media try to figure out how consumers want to conduct their digital lives going forward and with what devices.</p>
<p>And inevitably, that has begun to cause some major rifts among and between the powers that be throughout tech and media. It’s clear to us that a major realignment of consumer expectations and desires is taking place, along with a fundamental shift in how we all relate to computing.</p>
<p>Still, with all the changes, it&#8217;s important to keep a respectful tone, which seems to have gotten a bit lost of late, especially now when every tiny shift and disagreement enters the digital echo chamber and quickly moves from loud to strident.</p>
<p>Such noise inevitably makes the whole competitive necessity of Silicon Valley&#8211;which is one of its greatest assets, of course&#8211;seem tinny and small, much like what you hear out of Washington all the time.</p>
<p>One of the reasons I moved out West  was that it always seemed that&#8211;whatever the rivalry or wrangling&#8211;Silicon Valley was much better than that.</p>
<p>So even though healthy and robust competition is what makes it all work in tech, as Sergeant Esterhaus of &#8220;Hill Street Blues&#8221; used to say in the trademark phrase, which you can see in this video, &#8220;Let&#8217;s be careful out there&#8221;:</p>

<p>Evidently the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer took one look at Palm’s (PALM) books and decided an acquisition isn’t worth the trouble. &#8220;There just weren&#8217;t enough synergies to take the deal forward,&#8221; a source close to talks between the two companies told Reuters.</p>
<p>And so speculation about a potential acquirer is turning elsewhere. Lenovo seems to be the leading candidate at the moment. The company has big aspirations in China’s mobile market and a penchant for making big foreign acquisitions. It purchased IBM’s (IBM) ThinkPad business a few years back and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20070827/acer-gateway/">tried to buy Packard Bell</a>, so why not Palm?</p>
<p>Well, for one thing, Palm’s market share is too small to be of real benefit to Lenovo. For another, the company is already committed to Google’s (GOOG) Android for the OS to run on its soon-to-debut Lephone. </p>
<p>Finally, Palm’s asking price is said to be around $1.3 billion. Lenovo had about $2.4 billion in net cash reserves on hand the end of 2009. Would Lenovo really spend more than half of that on Palm, a company whose books frightened off HTC? <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=33519">As Larry Dignan writes at ZDNet</a>, it’s hard to make the case that it should.</p>
<p>So if not Lenovo, then who?</p>
<p>How about Hewlett-Packard (HPQ)? With handheld sales that fell by more than half year-over-year in its <a href="http://h30261.www3.hp.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=71087&amp;p=1Q10_FinancialResults">first quarter</a>, HP is surely looking for a way to revive them and capture a larger portion of the important mobile market. Acquiring Palm could be a good way to do it. Here’s why:</p>
<ul>
<li>Yes, HP is a Windows shop with, no doubt, big plans for Windows Phone 7, but that OS will likely figure in devices aimed at the enterprise market. With Palm’s assets, HP could target the consumer space as well.</li>
<li>Palm’s webOS is scalable. HP could use it in other devices&#8211;tablets, for example&#8211;differentiating them from those of competitors using open-source operating systems like Android.</li>
<li>
In Palm, HP would gain a turnkey smartphone division&#8211;a venture with a slick smartphone OS, a deep mobile patent portfolio, a talented R&#038;D team, the beginnings of an app ecosystem and established carrier relationships.</li>
<li>Palm and HP both call Silicon Valley home, and <a href="http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/execteam/bios/bradley.html">former Palm exec Todd Bradley</a> currently heads up HP&#8217;s Personal Systems Group. Obviously, there would still be integration risks, but there are clear synergies in culture and location that would at least temper them a bit.</li>
<li>HP has some $14 billion in cash on hand, more than enough to cover Palm’s rumored $1.3 billion asking price with plenty left over.</li>
</ul>
<p>That seems to me to be a pretty compelling case. Has it been made inside HP? I can’t say for sure, though we may find out in the weeks ahead.</p>

<p>Data use will surge as cellphone makers produce more Web-enabled handsets. Cisco (CSCO) says there could be more than five billion such devices connected to mobile networks in four years.</p>
<p>The company expects smart phones and Internet-enabled laptops to drive 90 percent of mobile traffic within five years, by which time 400 million consumers will access the Internet through a mobile connection only.</p>
<p>India will see the highest increase in smart-phone penetration, which will triple over the same period, and the sharpest uptick in smart-phone users, which is expected to quintuple.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The videogame industry posted sales of $5.53 billion in December, up four percent from a year ago, and the best single month ever, according to market research firm NPD. Hardware sales were especially strong, up 16 percent, and accessories were up 15 percent. But software sales were down seven percent from a year earlier.</p>
<p>Among the consoles, the Nintendo Wii sold 3.81 million units, more than triple the 1.26 million sold in November. The Sony (SNE) Playstation 3 sold 1.36 million units, nearly twice the number sold in the previous month. Microsoft (MSFT) Xbox 360 units were 1.31 million, up from 819,500 in November. Even the aging PS2 had a good month, with 333,200 units, up from 203,100 one month earlier.</p>
<p>In the handheld category, the Nintendo DS sold 3.31 million units, up from 1.7 million in November, while the Sony PSP sold 654,700 units, up from 293,000.</p>

<p>That’s what <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090324/ps3-xbox-wii-and-iphone/">ngmoco co-founder and Electronic Arts (ERTS) alum Neil Young said of Apple’s iconic handset</a> at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier this year, and it’s worth reflecting on a bit in light of a new report from Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi that claims the iPhone OS will soon create pricing and customer migration pressure for traditional gaming platforms.</p>
<p>Noting that some 665-760 million games may have been downloaded from the Apple (AAPL) App Store during the last 12 months, Sacconaghi estimates that the  installed base for the iPhone and iPod touch platform could amount to about one third of the total handheld gaming installed base by 2012.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe that gaming embodies the power of Apple&#8217;s App store: it has dramatically lowered the entry barriers for both developers and gamers alike, resulting in an unparalleled number of available games at affordable prices, which is creating lock-in and enhanced interest in Apple&#8217;s high-margin iPhone (and iPod Touch) platforms,&#8221; Sacconaghi writes.</p>
<p>Continuing, the analyst adds: &#8220;By most measures, gaming has been the killer App Store category, accounting for an estimated 40% of all downloads. Most importantly, we believe that gaming is providing yet another incremental, differentiated reason for consumers to purchase iPhones and iPod Touches, and creates powerful lock-in to the App Store platform and Apple products on a go forward basis.&#8221;</p>
<p>The upshot of all this is bad news for traditional gaming console developers&#8211;particularly those who have dismissed it as a novelty. &#8220;Most gaming developers today view the iPhone and other smart phones as an incremental opportunity, which targets the casual gamer but not the dedicating gaming enthusiast,&#8221; Sacconaghi explains. &#8220;Over time, however, we believe that the combination of evolutionary improvements in iPhone/iPod gaming functionality, the convenience of the App Store download model, the App&#8217;s Store leading title selection and lower price points could cause some migration among gaming enthusiasts to the Apple platform and/or pressure traditional gaming incumbents&#8217; hardware and software pricing.&#8221;</p>
<p>And this is clearly what Apple (AAPL) is aiming for. Consider these recent remarks from Phil Schiller, the company’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing: &#8220;People are starting to see what a great gaming device this is. When you think about the companies that came before us&#8230;when you played those other systems, they seemed so cool, but now when you look at them, they don&#8217;t stack up against the iPod touch&#8230;.No Multi-Touch user experience, Games are expensive, No App Store, No iPod, Expensive Games ($25-$40) and uncomfortable retail buying experience. [There are] 607 games for PSP and 3,680 games for Nintendo DS. [But there are ] 21,178 Game and Entertainment Titles at App Store.&#8221;</p>

<p>As I noted yesterday, July data from research firm NPD Group showed a 37 percent drop in video game hardware sales, and a 26 percent drop in console and handheld hardware sales. The report comes just days ahead of GameStop’s earnings report for its fiscal second quarter ended July, which is due before the open on Thursday, August 20.</p>
<p>Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia this morning responded to the NPD data by trimming his EPS estimates for GME; he now sees profits for the quarter of 23 cents a share, down from 28 cents.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Web browsing and email have comfortably migrated to mobile handhelds like the iPhone, BlackBerry and Palm (PALM) Pre. But many of these gadgets still cost a lot compared with cellphones that come free with renewed two-year contracts. </p>
<p>This week, I tested a new BlackBerry that costs less than any other BlackBerry did at launch—that is, if you buy it at the right place. Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve 8520 costs just $49 at Wal-Mart (WMT)—or $130 if you buy it at T-Mobile. Both prices are with two-year T-Mobile contracts.</p>

<p>The BlackBerry Curve has been one of the company&#8217;s most popular models. All iterations of the Curve combine a full QWERTY keyboard with a sleeker, more stylish look than bigger BlackBerry models like the Bold. And Curves typically cost less than their larger counterparts. In February, RIM refreshed its Curve brand for the first time in over two years with the 8900. This model was a real upgrade for Curve users, thanks to a brighter screen, faster performance and flatter keys that were easier to press. But six months later, it still costs as much as $199 (after rebate)—a steep asking price considering how some older 8300-series Curves are offered for around $50 with two-year contracts.</p>
<p>This newest $49 Curve 8520 lowers that price barrier. Its monthly T-Mobile service plans are also relatively inexpensive, starting at $55 for voice and data (not including MMS or SMS messaging). </p>
<p>It has two features never before seen on a BlackBerry. First, in place of a trackball or scroll wheel, this Curve uses a trackpad—a mini version of those used for mouse navigation on laptops.  </p>
<p>Second, it has designated physical buttons for playing, pausing and skipping ahead or back within media like videos and music. These rubbery buttons are built into the top edge of the BlackBerry.</p>
<p>I like the look of the Curve 8520—especially how the surface covering its screen extends down to the trackpad and its four surrounding buttons, giving it a smooth facade. It comes in two colors, black and frost (I used the black). Its low price, alone, will be enough to draw customers.  </p>
<p>But something about the way its keyboard and navigational keys worked felt cheap. Letter keys felt light and hollow while the Send, Menu, Escape and End keys around the trackpad clicked as I touched them.</p>
<p>The specifications of this BlackBerry tell the tale more specifically. Its 320&#215;240 pixel screen looks faded next to that of the Curve 8900, which is 480&#215;360. The blinking red indicator light at the top front corner of all BlackBerrys is a barely noticeable dot on this device. </p>
<p>And its camera is only two megapixels, not 3.2 megapixels like on the 8900, and is the first on a BlackBerry not to have a built-in flash. Also, it doesn&#8217;t run on the fast 3G network, though it uses Wi-Fi and automatically connects to trusted networks when in range of them. </p>
<p>First-time smartphone owners may not notice or care about these small details, but veteran BlackBerry users will pick up on them right away.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 incorporates useful physical features found on previous models like right- and left-side convenience keys that work as handy shortcuts. It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD memory card so users don&#8217;t have to buy their own before loading this device with photos, music and videos. </p>
<p>A strip of rubber runs around the Curve&#8217;s edge, covering up and smoothing over its convenience keys and volume buttons. This rugged addition isn&#8217;t visible from the front of the BlackBerry and it will probably go a long way in preventing nicks and dings. The word &#8220;Curve&#8221; is imprinted on the back of the BlackBerry, proudly branding this model.</p>
<p>The navigational trackpad is a cinch to use and moves the cursor up, down, right and left with very little effort. To select, one needs only to press in on the trackpad just as with the  trackball. Unlike the trackball, which rolls in place and can get stuck once in a great while, the trackpad doesn&#8217;t have any moving parts.</p>
<p>The physical media keys on the Curve 8520&#8242;s top edge work to instantly start playing media from any screen, like a music video that I watched. If you were to use your BlackBerry as your sole portable media player, these would be more valuable. And their position on the top of the Curve makes them easy to reach if the device is in a pocket or purse. </p>
<p>In my everyday usage scenarios, I usually forgot about these shortcut buttons and just used the trackpad to find and select a track or video for playing.  </p>
<p>BlackBerry&#8217;s App World store for applications that users can load onto the device still only offers 2,000 apps, compared to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) 65,000. This means that for now, this new Curve can&#8217;t be enhanced with as many outside programs, which is a real downside.  And if you do download a lot of apps, or music or videos or photos, you may have to get a bigger memory card.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 isn&#8217;t made for BlackBerry fanatics. But it&#8217;s a good entry-level BlackBerry for users who still haven&#8217;t let go of their basic cellphones. At Wal-Mart&#8217;s $49 price, it&#8217;s hard to beat.  </p>
