<p> No. Any songs that currently are stored on your computer&#8217;s hard disk remain there, so even if iTunes Match is discontinued, your music is safe. However, you will gain access from the cloud to additional songs that live on other computers or Apple devices you own, but now are also stored in your iTunes Match account.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I am considering buying the 10&#8243; Toshiba Thrive tablet you reviewed a while back. It comes in three memory configurations. Other than the amount of internal memory, do the three models have the same internal hardware?</em></p>

<p>There are some iPad apps that claim to print over 3G. Just go to the app store, search on &#8220;print,&#8221; and study the descriptions. </p>
<p>But it doesn&#8217;t matter, because every iPad, including those like yours that come with 3G, also includes Wi-Fi, and can print to compatible printers. The Verizon 3G is an added, alternate connection capability—not a replacement for Wi-Fi. Just make sure when you buy your printer that it&#8217;s compatible with Apple&#8217;s AirPrint technology. <p>Several start-ups are betting on the latter. The latest to enter the space is Pure Storage Inc., which announced that it raised $30 million in new capital to build a storage system that uses only flash memory.</p>
<p>It enters a market that includes several other start-ups building all-flash appliances, well-established storage companies that have embraced the change, and a variety of competing visions among investors and entrepreneurs for the best way to play the transition.</p>

So far we&#8217;ve seen the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110609/on-opening-day-fusion-io-rises-18-percent/">initial public offering of Fusion-io</a>, which uses flash chips to get data in servers closer to the processor and thus speed things up. </p>
<p>Next we saw Violin Memory &#8212; which makes flash-based storage arrays that are intended to make enterprise applications run faster &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110607/flash-madness-fusion-io-ipos-thursday-but-first-violin-raises-40m/">land $40 million in venture capital funding</a>. </p>
<p>Now we see a third player entering the &#8220;flash madness&#8221; narrative. Pure Storage is coming out of stealth today, announcing its plans to sell flash-based storage arrays. It is also announcing that it has landed a $30 million C-round led by Redpoint Ventures, with Samsung Venture Investment joining. (Yes, that would be the venture capital arm of the South Korean electronics giant that happens to be the world&#8217;s biggest manufacturer of flash memory.) Greylock Partners and Sutter Hill Ventures also participated. The latest round brings Pure&#8217;s total funding raised to date to $55 million.</p>
<p>So what is Pure Storage all about? I met up with CEO Scott Dietzen last week and got the download. </p>
<p>The fundamental problem with enterprise storage is that hard drives just can&#8217;t keep up with everything else that&#8217;s gotten faster in the data center. Flash memory is fundamentally faster, it uses less energy and it takes up less space. We all know this. </p>
<p>The problem with flash is that it has always tended to be more expensive than hard drives. Today, you can buy a one terabyte hard drive for $100 or less. But just try getting that same amount in flash memory and see if the price isn&#8217;t, well, a lot higher.</p>
<p>The same principles apply in the data center. CIOs would love to convert to flash-based systems, as long as they&#8217;re reliable and affordable and work with the applications and other hardware they already have.</p>
<p>Pure Storage is essentially promising to deliver just that, Dietzen says. The company&#8217;s first product is an all-flash storage array that is 10 times faster and 10 times smaller than hard-disk-based systems. It&#8217;s called the Pure Storage FlashArray, and it is being aimed at mainstream enterprises in a manner that&#8217;s easy to deploy.</p>
<p>Pure&#8217;s founders are John Colgrove &#8212; one of the founding engineers at Veritas, now part of Symantec &#8212; and John Hayes, a founding engineer at Bix, which was ultimately swallowed up by Yahoo. Dietzen hails from Yahoo as well, by way of its acquisition of Zimbra, where he was CTO.</p>
<p>An early key hire was Michael Cornwell, who was lead technologist for flash at Sun Microsystems (now part of Oracle). Cornwell also worked at Apple, where he was Manager of Storage Engineering for the iPod division, and oversaw that product&#8217;s transition to &#8212; you guessed it &#8212; flash memory. Remember the first iPod nano? That was his baby.</p>
<p>Another key name: Greylock venture partner <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110112/greylock-adds-former-data-domain-ceo-as-a-partner/">Frank Slootman</a>, the former CEO of Data Domain, is on Pure&#8217;s board.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s so special about a storage array built on flash memory? &#8220;Disks get slower every year,&#8221; Dietzen says. &#8220;Intel says processors have gotten 175 times faster over the last 15 years.&#8221; Disks just keep getting more data packed onto them, which doesn&#8217;t really make them any faster. The mechanical arm inside the disk that grabs data from the platter really can&#8217;t go much faster. &#8220;Disks today are comparably slower than tape was 15 years ago,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>This creates a problem. Storage needs are going up, but hard drives are slowing data centers down, preventing them from reaching their full potential. It&#8217;s only because of cost &#8212; about $5 per gigabyte &#8212; that hard drives are still appealing. Enterprise-grade flash, on the other hand, tends to cost $40 to $100 per gigabyte, and because flash is historically less reliable, you have to buy double what you really need.</p>
<p>Pure&#8217;s play is to get over the cost hurdle. Dietzen says the company can get the cost down to $5 per gigabyte and less.</p>
<p>How does it do that? By reducing the amount of data you actually store. What happens in enterprise environments is that various bits of data get copied and recopied, over and over. Imagine a big filing cabinet with 50 copies of each document scattered around in different folders, when you really only need one. Suddenly the size of that file cabinet need not be so big. The same applies in data storage: Why bother having 10 copies of the same block of data, when one or two will do?</p>
<p>Using a technique known as deduplication, a system can eliminate all those unneeded copies and thus streamline the whole operation. Deduplication, combined with compression, was the primary principle behind Slootman&#8217;s Data Domain, which is now part of EMC.</p>
<p>But deduplication is expensive on hard drives, and really doesn&#8217;t make sense. Because the mechanical arm in a hard drive is always searching around for where its next needed block of data is to be found, if you employ deduplication, you end up with a bunch of reference signs telling the arm where to go, Dietzen says. The end result is that the disk has to spin more, not less. Flash memory chips don&#8217;t have that problem. &#8220;We make that process fast, because there&#8217;s no performance hit to the deduping process,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>On top of that, Pure has created some algorithms that make the process a lot more granular than on hard-disk-based systems, by working with smaller disk-sector sizes. How small? He wouldn&#8217;t say exactly. </p>
<p>Unlike other storage companies &#8212; like, say, EMC &#8212; Pure&#8217;s array, Dietzen says, is built from the ground up for running flash. &#8220;The disk-centric companies are slotting flash into places where disks used to be, but they&#8217;re not changing the software to take advantage of the flash, to protect the flash from uneven wear and other things.&#8221;</p>
<p>A few early companies have tried the hardware, among them the law firm of Fenwick &#038; West, whose CIO Matt Kesner is quoted in Pure&#8217;s press release as saying that the data used for various workloads was reduced from 50 to 90 percent.</p>
<p>One key thing that&#8217;s going on in the data center these days is virtualization &#8212; running several virtual computers within one single physical computer. When you run a lot of virtual machines, you have a lot of data that, like the paper in that big file cabinet, is essentially the same. Dietzen says that Pure&#8217;s flash array is able to eliminate a lot of that data. &#8220;Even if those virtual machines are a mix of Windows and Linux, there are a lot of commonalities between them,&#8221; he says. It&#8217;s not uncommon to see the data footprint for virtual machines reduced by a factor of 15 or 20 to one. </p>
<p>And that has caused some interesting reactions among early customers trying out the array. &#8220;Some people try it and are shocked when they put 15 terabytes on it and see there&#8217;s only one terabyte and think we&#8217;ve lost a lot of their data,&#8221; Dietzen says. &#8220;It&#8217;s a little scary at first, but then they run all their workloads and see all the data is there.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tablet computers generally do a good job of playing videos and music, and displaying photos and documents. But they have limited capacity to store all these files, so you typically can carry only a fraction of your PC&#8217;s data on them.</p>
<p>You can get apps that allow tablets to access files you&#8217;ve stored in the cloud on services like Dropbox or SugarSync, but these require an Internet connection and can be slow.</p>

<p>Now, two companies are coming out with small, portable, companion hard disks that massively increase the storage capacity of tablets. And because most tablets lack USB connectors, these external hard disks stream their content to the tablets over a special, local Wi-Fi network they create. No Internet access is required. The content remains on the external device, though you can download files to the tablet&#8217;s own memory for permanent storage there.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the first of these gadgets to emerge. It&#8217;s from Seagate Technology, the big hard-disk company, and is called the GoFlex Satellite. It costs $200, and holds 500 gigabytes of data, far more than the 64 gigabytes that is the maximum on typical current tablets. </p>
<p>It was initially designed for use with Apple&#8217;s iPad, though it also works on Android tablets, as well as on iPhones and Android smartphones. It works best with a special iPad or iPhone app you install, though it will operate through the Web browser on Apple and Android devices.</p>
<p>In my tests, the Satellite basically did its job, smoothly and rapidly streaming movies, songs, pictures and documents to an iPad and other devices. It is battery-powered, so you can carry it around with your iPad, or leave it plugged in for longer use, as long as the iPad remains within about 150 feet. It isn&#8217;t tiny—about 5 by 3.5 by 1.25 inches, and just over half a pound—but it&#8217;s quite portable. It can stream different content to up to three devices simultaneously.</p>

<p>However, the Satellite has some drawbacks and trade-offs. The main trade-off is that, while you are connected to it via Wi-Fi for streaming, your iPad or other device can&#8217;t access the Internet, so you&#8217;re cut off from things like email, Web browsing and social networks. If you launch the Web browser while connected wirelessly to the Satellite, it just brings up the Satellite&#8217;s menu of files, regardless of what website you type in.</p>
<p>In addition, both the companion app and the Web-browser-interface display, while attractive and simple, can be clumsy to use. It is awkward to play photo slideshows or to listen to multiple songs in a row. And the Wi-Fi connection dropped several times, even when the iPad and the Satellite were located very near each other. </p>

<p>For me, the battery life fell short of the company&#8217;s five-hour claim.</p>
<p>The Satellite&#8217;s main competitor, due out later this month, is called the G-Connect, from Hitachi. Like the Seagate offering, it costs $200, holds 500 gigabytes of content, and is initially designed for the iPad and iPhone. Unlike the Satellite, it has no internal battery, though it will accept external batteries made for the iPad. </p>
<p>Also, unlike the Satellite, it allows simultaneous media streaming to an iPad and Internet connectivity, though only when the G-Connect is hooked up to a wired Internet connection via its Ethernet jack. I wasn&#8217;t able to test the G-Connect, so I can&#8217;t say how well it will work.</p>
<p>A third contender in this category, the Wi-Drive from Kingston Technology, is a bit different. While it has an internal battery and uses Wi-Fi to stream content, it has no hard disk and uses only memory chips. Thus, it has much less capacity than the other two, and doesn&#8217;t add much storage to a tablet—only up to 32 gigabytes extra. It isn&#8217;t yet available, according to the company&#8217;s website, which also lists no prices, and I didn&#8217;t test it.</p>
<p>So, how do you get content into the Satellite so you can use it on your iPad or other tablet? </p>
<p>First you plug it into a USB port on your PC or Mac. Then, you have two choices. You can either drag whatever files you want manually to the drive. Or, you can use free software that syncs music, video and photos. This software can be set to fetch only content that is playable on your particular device.</p>
<p>Using both methods, I moved 55 videos (including two feature films), more than 2,000 photos, about 1,700 songs and nearly 200 Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF documents to the Satellite, some from a Mac and some from a Windows machine. Using the sync software, the process was surprisingly fast, and this content took up less than 20% of the drive&#8217;s capacity.</p>
<p>All the content showed up as promised on my iPad in both the special app and in the Web browser. I also tested it on an iPhone, where both the app and browser display also gave me access to the content via wireless streaming. </p>
<p>I tried it on two different Android tablets, where the content showed up and played fine via the browser. In addition, I tested a pre-release version of the Android app—almost identical to the iPad app—and it, too, worked as promised.</p>
<p>However, while the Satellite&#8217;s app and browser display are clean and well-organized, I found them annoying in some respects. </p>
<p>For one thing, they lack simple slideshow, playlist and album features. While playing a group of multiple photos or songs, I couldn&#8217;t manually skip or go back.</p>
<p>In addition, the computer-sync software doesn&#8217;t allow you to easily select only certain files or to eliminate small files like record album covers or icons, or special, hidden files your computer creates that look like videos, but aren&#8217;t. So your file list gets cluttered with dozens of unplayable or unwanted items.</p>
<p>The Satellite&#8217;s battery supposedly lasts five hours when continuously streaming videos to one device. But in my tests, I only got about four hours.</p>
<p>Overall, the GoFlex Satellite might be a useful device for iPad or other tablet owners with large media collections. But it needs work.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While it can perform many of the functions of a PC or Mac, Apple&#8217;s iPad— including the new iPad 2—lacks two of the most common and frequently used features of a traditional computer. It has no standard USB port for connecting a flash drive or external hard disk, so you can&#8217;t move files into and out of it from these devices. And it doesn&#8217;t have a systemwide, user-accessible file system like those on traditional computers.</p>
<p>These omissions have led many readers to ask me how you get files—especially Microsoft Office files and PDFs—into and out of iPads. They have bolstered the contention that the popular tablet is really just a &#8220;consumption device,&#8221; not a productivity tool. </p>

<p>So, here&#8217;s a brief primer on how to get such documents into and out of an iPad, and how to view, edit and create them on the tablet. This isn&#8217;t an in-depth product review, though I&#8217;ve tested every product and method I will mention here. It&#8217;s merely a quick, practical guide to how to work with documents on an iPad.</p>

<p>Before we start, let me mention some caveats. First, to get the most out of documents on the iPad, you have to download add-on apps. Second, while many of these apps can store and organize files, those file systems are silos within the apps. Third, these apps often lack full fidelity with Office on a PC or Mac, especially for complex documents. Fonts and layouts may be changed, and none of the apps I tested was able to display revision histories in Office documents.</p>
<p>Finally, unless you buy an add-on keyboard, typing on an iPad isn&#8217;t as easy for many people as on a regular computer. For instance, I wouldn&#8217;t want to type a 30-page legal brief on an iPad. But you can use an iPad with Office documents and PDFs.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Creating and Editing Files</h5>
<p>Microsoft hasn&#8217;t built a version of Microsoft Office for the iPad. But several companies make office suites for the tablet that aim to emulate Office by allowing you to create and export Office-compatible documents, and to import and edit documents created in Office on PCs and Macs.</p>
<p>The three most notable of these are Quickoffice Connect, which costs $15; Documents To Go, which comes in two versions costing $10 and $17; and Apple&#8217;s Pages, Numbers and Keynote, which cost $10 each.</p>
<p>All of these apps are more limited than Office on a PC, but I have found they worked pretty well. All have their own internal file-storage system, and each can be connected to cloud-based services, or can open email attachments or receive wired file transfers from iTunes.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wired File Transfers</h5>
<p>When you plug an iPad into one of the recent versions of Apple&#8217;s iTunes program on your computer, and select the iPad icon in the left column, a section appears at the bottom of the Apps tab that is called File Sharing. This module lists all the apps on your iPad that can handle various kinds of documents, and shows you what files they contain. You can then add files from your computer to one of the listed apps, or save the files to your computer, using buttons labeled Add or &#8220;Save to….&#8221; Even veteran iTunes users may not know about this feature, because Apple hasn&#8217;t publicized it much, and you have to scroll down in iTunes to see it.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Viewing Email Attachments</h5>
<p>Out of the box, the iPad allows you to view a wide variety of documents attached to emails. If somebody emails you a Microsoft Office file, a PDF file, or other common types of files, you get an icon in the email, and, if you tap and hold your finger on the icon, a pop-up menu appears that allows you to view it in full-screen mode, a function called Quick Look. Just this week, I used this method to review and catch an error in a Microsoft Word document I received from a colleague while riding in a New York taxi with an iPad. </p>
<p>If you have an app like Quickoffice installed that allows saving or organizing documents, or editing them, the email pop-up menu becomes even more useful. In addition to the Quick Look option, it gives you an &#8220;Open In…&#8221; option that lets you move the document to an app of your choice, where you can store it permanently, or even edit it, if the app allows for that. This &#8220;Open In…&#8221; option also appears in various apps other than email, so you can move documents from one app to another.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wireless File Transfers</h5>
<p>There are some iPad apps available that allow you to move documents wirelessly if your computer and iPad are on the same Wi-Fi network. One that I have used successfully is called Air Sharing and costs $2.99. It mounts your iPad on your computer as if it were an external drive, and allows you to drag files between your computer and iPad.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Cloud-Based File Transfers</h5>
<p>If you back up your PC or Mac files to a cloud-based remote service, like SugarSync, Dropbox, or Apple&#8217;s own iDisk, many of these services provide iPad apps that allow you to fetch the files to your iPad, or, in some cases, upload files from your iPad to these services. These apps typically allow you only to view or perhaps store the files on the iPad, but some include the &#8220;Open in…&#8221; feature to let you move the file to another app where you can edit it.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Sophisticated File Viewers</h5>
<p>Some apps for the iPad let you store large numbers of different types of files, view them and even annotate them. My favorite, GoodReader, is a $4.99 app that handles all the Microsoft Office file types, plus PDFs and more. </p>
<p>GoodReader even lets you type notes on, or draw on, PDFs, and then save and email the annotated version. It also allows you to organize files into folders and rename them. And it lets you retrieve files from cloud-based services, without having to switch to a separate app provided by those services. Among the cloud services it supports are Google Docs, Dropbox, SugarSync and iDisk.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Bottom Line</h5>
<p>It&#8217;s perfectly fair to criticize Apple for leaving out a USB port and a shared file system. The company is reputed to be working on a cloud-based file sharing system that may alleviate these omissions. But, even today, you can work with common file types on an iPad, if you know how.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have a 3GS iPhone. Is there a way to connect it to the Internet cable found in hotel and motel rooms?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Not that I know of. But you can do this indirectly by creating your own Wi-Fi network from the wired connection in the room. There are two ways to do this.</p>
<p>One possibility is to carry a small portable router. These are small devices that plug into the wired connection and propagate a Wi-Fi signal in the hotel room that the iPhone (or other devices, like laptops and tablets) can use. A second option is to plug a laptop into the physical connection and use it as a Wi-Fi base station by setting up what&#8217;s called an &#8220;ad hoc&#8221; or computer-to-computer Wi-Fi connection. Steps for doing this, which can be a bit techie, differ depending on whether you use a PC or Mac.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have been struggling with a hard drive space shortage for at least a year. I have deleted duplicate emails. I have deleted videos and word files and put them on a stand alone hard drive. Do you have any other suggestions? </em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> If you don&#8217;t want to, or can&#8217;t, replace your laptop, and don&#8217;t want to be tethered to your external hard disk, you might look into buying a new, larger, internal hard disk. </p>
<p>Many stores and consultants can sell and install larger hard disks, and even transfer the data from your old one.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have thousands of photos on my computer and external hard drives. I&#8217;m in the process of trying to organize them on one hard drive and noticed that there are many duplicates between the different devices. Is there one program that you recommend that reliably detects and allows the removal of duplicate files?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> You might try using Google&#8217;s Picasa to sweep the drives, locate the photos, and display them. </p>
<p>The program has a feature that can avoid importing duplicates. Once imported, if there are still duplicates, Picasa offers methods to hide or actually delete them from your disk. Information on this is at <a href="http://bit.ly/8YKTzy">http://bit.ly/8YKTzy</a>.</p>

<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>I regard the current, original iPad as an excellent product, and can&#8217;t say you&#8217;d go wrong with it. But while Apple is famously secretive, I&#8217;d be surprised if there isn&#8217;t a new model announced in the next few months that will have added or improved features. There&#8217;s wide speculation, for instance, it will gain a camera or two. The company has a long history of improving its products, and, in the case of the iPad, must keep making it better to deal with a host of coming tablet rivals. So, if you can wait a few months, I&#8217;d do so.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I see that many of the newer wireless routers with attractive features do not support printer sharing. Does that mean you cannot connect a printer via Ethernet cable to the router and be able to access that printer through the wireless network? Why do so many of the newer routers not support printer sharing?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> In the context you seem to be using it, the term &#8220;printer sharing&#8221; referred to plugging in an otherwise non-networkable printer via USB to a router, which would then make the printer usable over the network. I presume that this feature has declined in popularity as more home printers now have wired or wireless networking built in, and the latest Windows and Mac operating systems make it much easier to share even a printer without its own network features through the computer&#8217;s connection to the network. If the printer has wired networking built in, you should be able to plug it into one of the Ethernet jacks on most wireless routers and make it usable on your wireless network.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have an almost two-year-old MacBook Pro. The hard drive is nearly full, and I wondered if you knew of any tricks to free up some space. I&#8217;m particularly interested in cost-effective fixes.</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> One useful free utility for freeing up space on a Mac is called Monolingual, and is available at <a href="http://bit.ly/dqTCSC">http://bit.ly/dqTCSC</a>. This little utility allows you to remove all the obscure files on a Mac that allow the computer to operate in languages you can&#8217;t read or don&#8217;t use. For instance, if you only speak and read English, you can erase the files that enable the computer to run in, say, Albanian and Portuguese. Its maker says this can free up hundreds of megabytes of space. I have tried it and it works. Of course, whether you have a Windows PC or a Mac, you can free up space in many other ways, such as by deleting files and programs you don&#8217;t use, archiving or deleting old email, and removing temporary browser files.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It has been a big year in personal technology, from the debut and early success of Apple&#8217;s iPad, to the rise and continuous improvement of Google&#8217;s Android smart phone platform, to the continued surge in social services led by Facebook and Twitter.</p>

<p>So I thought I&#8217;d take a look at the challenges and opportunities facing some major players in consumer tech in 2011. As with all my columns, this one is focused only on products and services provided directly to consumers, rather than to businesses. Also, as usual, this column isn&#8217;t meant to offer investment advice or to evaluate the management skills or financial condition of companies. It is a look at the products and competitive positions of the key contenders as they enter the new year.</p>
<p><strong>Apple</strong>: Coming off a highly successful 2010, in which it introduced a new category of portable computer—the multitouch tablet—and sold millions of the product, Apple will have to withstand an onslaught of competitors by wowing consumers again with the second version of the iPad. At the same time, it will have to make a widely expected transition for the iPhone from a single carrier in the U.S., AT&amp;T, to a second, likely Verizon. This could present a new opportunity to reach lots of new customers, but the sleek phone will have to work well on different network technology. At the same time, Apple will be hoping its planned new Macintosh operating system, Lion, can preserve the surprising momentum of the high-priced Mac, which the company is trying to enhance with certain iPad-like features, such as an app store and longer battery life.</p>

<p>In 2011, Apple also is likely to try to address two areas where it has been weak: cloud computing and social networking. Both its MobileMe cloud service and its Ping social network had rough starts, and MobileMe charges $100 a year for services others give away. Apple is so popular, it has a huge opportunity to link users of its family of devices and of iTunes via the cloud and social networks, but it will have to aim higher and execute better. The second area where it likely hopes to improve is in the living room. The new, cheaper Apple TV is selling better than its predecessor but still lacks much Internet content. To break through, Apple will have to strike landmark deals with media companies.</p>
<p><strong>Google</strong>: The search giant, also riding high, is now in so many product areas it competes with nearly everyone. In its core search business, it must focus on fending off a surprisingly strong challenge from Microsoft&#8217;s Bing by giving consumers more attractive, actionable results. Its Android operating system is a  big hit, but still isn&#8217;t as polished or easy to use as the iPhone&#8217;s software, and even a Google official admitted it is still &#8220;an enthusiast product for early adopters.&#8221; One big test will be the forthcoming Honeycomb version of Android, meant for tablets that challenge the iPad.</p>
<p>A separate group at Google will try in 2011 to revolutionize the PC operating-system business and muscle in on incumbents Microsoft and Apple. Its new Chrome OS will power notebooks that essentially act as Web browsers, and run programs stored in the cloud, not on a hard disk. They also store all your files in the cloud. We&#8217;ll learn in 2011 how many consumers are comfortable with that approach.</p>
<p>Google also may take another whack at social networking, where it hasn&#8217;t made much of a dent after its Buzz service failed to take off. And it will have to rework its overly complex Google TV effort to bring Internet video to the living room. </p>
<p><strong>Microsoft</strong>: The software giant still generates strong consumer loyalty with its older products, like Windows and Office and Xbox, all of which have had updates in the past year or two. But it faces big challenges in two hot areas: smart phones and tablets. Its new Windows Phone 7 platform has some nice design features, but also some missing capabilities that need to be addressed. Initial sales seem respectable, but will have to accelerate to get Microsoft back in a game it once led. The company also is a long way from the 300,000 apps available for the iPhone or the 100,000 for Android.</p>
<p>In tablets, Microsoft is hinting that a new version of Windows is being designed with a tablet focus to complement its PC focus. That product can&#8217;t be too late, given the rapid rise of the iPad and the many planned Android and other tablets for 2011. One golden opportunity Microsoft has is to expand the reach of its brilliant Kinect technology for games to other forms of computing. This system can recognize individual users and interpret gestures without the use of a controller device.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Microsoft hopes to seize on a surge in concern about privacy to help keep its diminishing lead in browsers by building new privacy features, unavailable so far in other browsers, into the 2011 version of Internet Explorer.</p>
<p><strong>RIM</strong>: The BlackBerry maker had a good 2010 in some ways, though sales were propped up by two-for-one giveaways, and consumer surveys show enthusiasm fading for the iconic smart phone. It needs a radically new user interface to keep up with iPhone and Android, and a lot more third-party apps. But it can&#8217;t afford to alienate its fan base. The company has an answer: a new software platform called QNX, but is vague on when that will show up on the BlackBerry. For 2011, RIM&#8217;s big move will be a new QNX-based tablet, the PlayBook, which looks speedy and highly attractive in the limited demos RIM has provided. What isn&#8217;t clear is how much the PlayBook will be aimed at consumers, as company officials have consistently stressed its appeal to businesses.</p>
<p><strong>HP</strong>: The technology behemoth&#8217;s laptops and printers have proved popular with consumers. But it hasn&#8217;t had any real presence in smart-phones, tablets or consumer cloud services. To solve the problems, in 2010 HP bought innovative but struggling Palm, whose smart-phone operating system, webOS, and phones, the Pre and Pixi, got good reviews but sold poorly and didn&#8217;t attract many third-party apps. In 2011, HP hopes to use its ample money and talent to revive webOS with new phones and tablets to challenge Apple and Android. A successful Palm re-launch, with the new initiatives from RIM and Microsoft, would be good for consumers by providing more choice and competition. HP also hopes to boost home printing with a new line of printers that can print anything emailed across the Internet and wirelessly print from Apple&#8217;s hand-held devices.</p>
<p><strong>Facebook and Twitter</strong>: The twin leaders in social networking were red-hot in 2010, attracting vast numbers of users. They have huge opportunities for further success, but face challenges. Smaller services, like social-coupon company Groupon, continue to emerge with new social and community ideas consumers like. Apple and Google could be big headaches if they get social right in 2011. Facebook must continue its recent initiative to let members share personal details with more limited groups of friends, and to find ways to make money while offering more privacy, which has been a thorn in its side. Twitter is on a mission to get more than an active minority to post, while convincing people it is a valuable way to keep up with news and opinion even if you never post.</p>
<p>Despite the poor economy, the consumer-tech companies continue to show vibrancy, innovation and success. But every year brings challenges and surprises, and 2011 promises to be another fascinating ride.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few years ago, former Seagate Technology PLC Chief Executive Bill Watkins made an analogy comparing the hard-disk industry to Rodney Dangerfield.</p>
<p>“I think it’s unfair not to respect a commodity,” Watkins told Newsweek in 2007. “There’s a tremendous amount of technology in this commodity.”</p>
<p>Yet for the most part, investors have given the hard-drive business, with its razor-thin profit margins, short shrift. A valuation debate, plus a nagging fear about the potential obsolescence of hard disks, may have been the two biggest factors in Seagate’s failure to reach a deal to go private.</p>
<p>Most analysts, however, believe that the deal collapsed purely over price.</p>

But, unlike its maker&#8217;s other products, Apple TV hasn&#8217;t caught on in a big way. In fact, Apple CEO Steve Jobs calls it a &#8220;hobby.&#8221;</p>

<p>Still, the company isn&#8217;t giving up. This fall it brought out a radically revamped Apple TV at a much lower price—$99, down from $229—and with a different philosophy. While earlier versions contained a hard disk and allowed you to purchase and store movies, music and TV shows, the new Apple TV is all about streaming and renting. It can&#8217;t store content, although, like its predecessors, it can transmit to your TV screen content stored on your networked home computers.</p>
<p>Perhaps the coolest feature of the new Apple TV is that it allows you to wirelessly beam video and audio from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to the TV screen. A new feature called AirPlay in the latest software on these portable devices makes this possible. So, if you have a video or photos on, say, an iPad, you can just tap an icon on its screen to view them on a TV via Apple TV instead of on the device&#8217;s smaller screen. (AirPlay also works wirelessly from the free iTunes software on PCs and Macs.)</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the new Apple TV, including trying out AirPlay using various devices, and found that it performs as advertised. It has a clean, easy interface, does a great job of streaming content from your own computers, and it allows you to rent TV shows at just 99 cents an episode. It&#8217;s even almost invisible next to your TV—a 4-inch-square black box less than an inch tall. And setup is easy.</p>
<p>But it has some significant downsides. The most important of these is a very limited selection of Internet video sources. If you want a set-top box that allows you to watch a wide range of video from the Web, Apple TV isn&#8217;t it. </p>
<p>Apple TV is now essentially a modestly priced adapter that streams video, audio and photos to your HDTV from three main sources: your own computers, Apple&#8217;s iTunes service plus a few other online sources, and content on your portable Apple devices using AirPlay.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the polar opposite of the new Google TV, which tries to encompass the entire Internet but is too complicated for mainstream users and costs hundreds of dollars. Apple is offering much less variety in content sources, but with a much simpler interface and a tiny remote with just seven buttons, versus the keyboard or minikeyboard used with Google TV.</p>
<p>Apple TV is still tied heavily to the company&#8217;s own iTunes service. The new model now also offers Netflix, which is nicely integrated into Apple&#8217;s user interface, but is very common on other set-top boxes, including the less expensive Roku models. YouTube is accessible from the new device, though it was present on the older model as well. The device can&#8217;t deliver other video services, nor is it designed to bring up Web pages on your TV.</p>
<p>And, even within Apple&#8217;s own iTunes service, which is Apple TV&#8217;s source for a la carte rental of TV shows and movies, the content is limited. For its 99-cent TV show rentals, the device mainly offers programs from ABC, Disney, Fox, PBS and the BBC. If your favorite show is on NBC, CBS or many other networks, you can&#8217;t rent it on Apple TV, nor can you get to the Web to view it. Alas, even within those networks, some of the programs are old and I couldn&#8217;t find some popular shows, like &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; on ABC or &#8220;American Idol&#8221; on Fox. (Fox, like The Wall Street Journal, is owned by News Corp.) </p>
<p>You can still buy TV shows from the excluded networks, or shows unavailable for rental, on your computers and stream them to the TV via Apple TV, but that is a more complicated process.</p>

<p>Apple claims the largest selection of high-definition movies online, and says many are available the same day they appear on DVD. Movie rentals start at $2.99 for standard-definition versions and $3.99 for high definition, though many are $4.99. Both movies and TV shows can be kept for 30 days, but, once you start playing them, the clock starts on a short window before they expire. In the case of movies, the window is 24 hours; for TV shows, it&#8217;s 48 hours. You can pause and resume, or watch them repeatedly, within those windows.</p>
<p>In my tests, video and audio quality were excellent. Programs started rapidly, and I never saw any stuttering or buffering delays. Like the older Apple TV models, the new one did a very good job of streaming to the TV content from both PCs and Macs running iTunes on my home network. In fact, the process of setting this up has been made simpler. Watching slideshows of family photos was simple and rewarding.</p>
<p>Searching for a TV show or movie was tedious, because it requires you to peck out letters from an onscreen keyboard with the little remote. (This is why Google uses a keyboard, but that isn&#8217;t a welcome device in many living rooms.) However, there&#8217;s an alternative. Apple offers a free iPhone and iPad app that can control the Apple TV, and it has a built in virtual keyboard for much faster searching.</p>
<p>AirPlay worked well in my tests. I tried it on both an iPad and an iPhone, and was easily able to switch a video or song from the device itself to the Apple TV, and thus, to the TV screen and speakers. This requires merely clicking on an icon that looks like a wide-screen TV with an arrow beneath it, and then selecting &#8220;Apple TV&#8221; as a destination. </p>
<p>I also tried AirPlay on both a Mac and Windows laptop using the latest version of iTunes, and it worked fine. On all the AirPlay-equipped devices, you can also multitask. Once you&#8217;ve started beaming a video to the Apple TV, you can do other things on the originating device without interrupting the video. For instance, as I write this paragraph in Microsoft Word, I am watching a video beamed to my TV via AirPlay from iTunes on my laptop.</p>
<p>But AirPlay has some limitations. On the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch it will only beam video to the Apple TV from Apple&#8217;s own Video, iPod and Photos apps, plus the YouTube app. On computers, it only works with iTunes. Some third-party apps on the hand-held devices can use it with audio, though not video.</p>
<p>Also, switching the video stream to the Apple TV can take a few seconds, during which the video keeps playing, so you often have to rewind.</p>
<p>Overall, Apple TV is a reasonably priced, well-designed device. It is especially attractive for viewing videos and photos from your computers, and Apple devices, on your TV. But it doesn&#8217;t deliver most Internet video sources, or even all online network programs. </p>

<p>Just 1.4-inches high, the latest iteration of the diminutive machine is smaller than its two-inch-tall predecessor and quite a bit more powerful. Packed into its new aluminum unibody enclosure: A 2.4GHz or 2.66GHz Intel (INTC) Core 2 Duo chip, Nvidia&#8217;s (NVDA) GeForce 320M GPU, 320GB hard disk, 8x double-layer SuperDrive and an integrated power supply. At the Mini’s rear: Four USB ports, SD card slot, Ethernet, an HDMI port and a Mini DisplayPort.  </p>
<p>And as for price? Well, the Mini remains Apple’s (AAPL) &#8220;most affordable Mac ever.&#8221; But it has become a bit more expensive. The entry-level price is $699&#8211;$100 more than the model it replaced.  </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I am writing this in Microsoft Word, hardly an unusual way to author a document. But I&#8217;m not using Word as you know it—part of the large, complex Microsoft Office suite installed on your computer&#8217;s hard drive. Instead, I am using a new, streamlined version of Word that for the first time resides on remote servers you reach through the Internet.</p>

<p>This new version of Word is used inside a Web browser. It works on both Windows PCs and Macs, and via the newer versions of the major browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome. It&#8217;s free and it doesn&#8217;t require you to have regular Office on your computer.</p>
<p>Word isn&#8217;t the only Office component that&#8217;s now available in a free online version. Microsoft (MSFT) has created similar simplified versions of Excel, PowerPoint and its OneNote note-taking program as part of the free online suite called Office Web Apps, which is available at office.live.com. To use the new online Office, you&#8217;ll need a free account for the company&#8217;s broader Windows Live online service.</p>
<p>Microsoft is also releasing a new version of its traditional desktop Office for Windows next week, called Office 2010. But in my view, the online edition is the most interesting new development for consumers in this round of updates. It&#8217;s part of the broader trend toward cloud computing—doing tasks online rather than with desktop programs. And it&#8217;s meant to help the software giant compete with rival online office suites from competitors like Google (GOOG) and Zoho.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Office Web Apps on both Windows and Mac computers, and in all four major browsers, and I like it. It has some downsides and is still a work in progress. It lacks many of the more sophisticated features of the local, desktop version of Office. In fact, Microsoft—apparently trying to protect its profitable desktop suite—refers to Office Web Apps as a &#8220;companion&#8221; to desktop Office, for &#8220;light&#8221; work.</p>

<p>But these are capable, if simpler, programs that look and feel like their desktop counterparts and they will likely meet the needs of many consumers who produce basic documents, even if they don&#8217;t own desktop Office. Also, the new Web Apps are connected to a generous 25 gigabytes of free online storage for your documents, via a companion Microsoft online storage system called SkyDrive.</p>
<p>Another big benefit: Microsoft boasts its Office Web Apps produce documents that use the same file formats as the desktop programs and thus, look fully accurate when opened in desktop Office. The company calls this &#8220;fidelity.&#8221; In my tests, this claim held true, at least on my Windows PC. (A revised version of Microsoft Office for the Mac, tuned to work with Web Apps, is in the works.)</p>
<p>The new version of the desktop Office suite also has many new features, but a lot of these are for power users or corporate users, and, overall, it isn&#8217;t nearly as big a change as its predecessor, Office 2007. Among the new desktop features consumers will notice and use are the extension of the consolidated top tool bar called the &#8220;Ribbon,&#8221; introduced in the 2007 version in most Office programs, to Outlook; a new unified view for printing, sharing and previewing documents, called &#8220;Backstage&#8221;; and richer graphics. You can also now customize the Ribbon.</p>
<p>In my tests of the streamlined Office Web Apps, I was able to use a variety of fonts and styles, insert and resize photos, and create tables. And I was able to view my documents, though not edit them, on an iPhone and iPad. This also works with other mobile devices.</p>
<p>One glitch I ran into in the Word Web App was that, if you use a tab to start a paragraph, it changes the left margin of each subsequent line. Microsoft says this is a bug and it is working to fix it.</p>
<p>Another downside for some users may be that the Web Apps only directly open documents from, and save them to, your online SkyDrive storage, not your hard disk. So you have to upload files from your hard disk to SkyDrive to edit them in the Web Apps. And, like most cloud-based programs, they can only be used when you&#8217;re online.</p>
<p>There are numerous things you may be used to doing in desktop Office that can&#8217;t be done in the online version. For instance, you can&#8217;t drag photos by the corners to resize them, embed videos, create slide transitions or add new spreadsheet charts.</p>
<p>You can, with one click, open a Web version of your document in the full desktop program, to take advantage of richer editing. However, this only works with certain combinations of browsers and desktop Office versions.</p>
<p>Two of the Web apps, Excel and OneNote, allow multiple users to log on and work on the same document together. The others don&#8217;t yet. In fact, in my tests, I couldn&#8217;t open a Word document locally until I had closed it online, and vice versa. Microsoft says it is working on expanding simultaneous use to all the apps.</p>
<p>Office Web Apps are a good start for Microsoft at bringing its productivity expertise to the Web, and may be all many consumers need for creating simple documents.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> If you buy a U.S. 3G iPad and take it to Europe, can you swap in a 3G SIM card from an authorized iPad carrier there to avoid AT&#038;T (T) roaming fees?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>I haven&#8217;t tried it, but Apple (AAPL) says the answer to this is yes. The company told me that if you insert a SIM from one its partner carriers, the carrier settings get set automatically when you plug in the SIM, though in some cases you might need to have connected your iPad to iTunes recently for this to work correctly. Apple adds that you can even use a SIM from a non-partner carrier, though in that case, you&#8217;d have to manually enter the carrier settings on the iPad. Note, however, that the iPad uses a new, smaller size of SIM card that not all carriers sell yet.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> What is your view on extended warranties for a new laptop? My homeowner&#8217;s insurance covers accidental damage, but I am debating whether to buy a basic extended warranty for other problems.</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>I typically shun extended warranties for relatively inexpensive electronics devices, especially those, like digital cameras or music players, that tend to be very reliable. But laptops are costlier, more complex, and more prone to failures such as broken hard disks, bad memory or screen problems. So, in general, unless the price is outrageous, I would buy an extended manufacturer&#8217;s warranty for a laptop.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The important records of most people&#8217;s lives are too often hard to find when you need them. Some are on paper, scattered in folders, drawers or boxes in homes and offices. Others are in digital files on one or more computers.</p>
<p>For years, there have been software programs and Web sites that try to corral portions of this information. Some of these digital products offer to organize your online IDs and passwords. Others focus on financial, health, or other information. </p>

<p>But a couple of relatively new products aim to digitally collect your important data in all these categories in one easy-to-access place: either on your computer or on the Web. One is Orggit, launched last fall by a Chicago-based company called Morgan Street Document Systems. The other is InformationSafe, launched in January by New York company Ascend Partnerships.</p>
<p>Orggit, available at orggit.com, costs $50 a year. InformationSafe, available at infosafe.com, is $50 for a desktop version or $50 a year for a Web version. A backup service for the desktop version of InformationSafe is $30 a year.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing both, and found each fairly easy to use and potentially very valuable, especially as your life gets more complicated. It&#8217;s a real bonus to be able to find everything in one place, even scanned paper documents. Both products work on either Windows PCs or Macs. </p>
<p>They also share some important downsides. As you might expect, they are only effective if you take the time and effort to enter all your information, from passwords to credit-card information to all the medications you take, and more. That can be a chore, even though both products try to make it easier with predefined templates for each type of data. </p>
<p>Another downside: security. Anything stored digitally, especially online, is vulnerable to criminal hackers. Both products offer multiple log-in plans, not just passwords but things like photos or important dates in your life that you must identify. Both also use a tough form of encryption typically favored by the government and banks. But there are no guarantees.</p>
<p>On this issue, InformationSafe has the edge. While it offers a Web-based version, it also comes in a version that exists only on your local computer, or on a removable drive. The company says this local version is chosen by 80% of its users. Orggit is purely Web-based, and can be accessed from any computer or from Orggit&#8217;s nicely designed free iPhone app.</p>
<p>InformationSafe&#8217;s desktop version is less convenient, because it can&#8217;t be accessed remotely. But it&#8217;s more secure. Still, even data stored only on a local computer or drive can be compromised by a determined hacker who targets it when the machine is online, or if it is lost or stolen and falls into the wrong hands. </p>

<p>You could use InformationSafe on a PC that you never connect to the Internet, but you&#8217;d be unable to use the company&#8217;s optional backup service and could lose everything if the hard disk fails, unless you faithfully back it up locally.</p>
<p>Each product is divided into logical sections, such as finance, health, insurance, passwords, and so forth. Orggit has a simpler layout, with colorful icons and a quicker, easier way to download reports on what&#8217;s in your wallet and on your health data. InformationSafe has many more canned templates, but you can enter almost anything into Orggit as well.</p>
<p>Each allows you to type in your information using the templates, or to upload digital or scanned documents, such as a living will or the image of a driver&#8217;s license. Each also allows you to type notes on everything you store.</p>
<p>Orggit has a special health feature InformationSafe lacks. Once you sign up, you get a physical wallet card with a toll-free number that can be called by emergency or medical personnel to gain access to your vital medical information. This phone number also is displayed in the iPhone app.</p>
<p>Also, Orggit allows you to store separate sets of information for up to 10 family members or other people, who can share some or all of their information with each other. InformationSafe allows the entry of information about other people, but it is basically designed for a single user; and sharing, while possible, is more limited.</p>
<p>InformationSafe has a more staid look and feel, but it isn&#8217;t hard to navigate. However, its local and Web versions aren&#8217;t connected, are purchased separately and don&#8217;t synchronize with each other even if you have both. </p>
<p>You can get Web backup of the local version for a fee, but this backup isn&#8217;t visible from the Web. The company says it is working on this feature.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re comfortable with digital storage, these two products offer an effective way to organize the details of your life.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I&#8217;m wondering about wireless specs for a laptop. I suspect the &#8220;n&#8221; version of Wi-Fi is best but &#8220;g&#8221; is adequate. Any advice would be appreciated.</em></p>
<p>A. It depends on how and where you intend to use your laptop&#8217;s wireless connectivity. The &#8220;n&#8221; version of Wi-Fi can be much faster than &#8220;g&#8221;  and can have much greater range. However, the speed difference won&#8217;t matter much if your sole use is connecting to the Internet with a typical home or public hotspot service, since the maximum speed of these services is almost always well below &#8220;g&#8221; and &#8220;n&#8221; capabilities.  But if you are streaming video at home or backing up large files wirelessly among computers and networked hard disks on a home network, you&#8217;d be much better off with &#8220;n,&#8221; assuming all devices involved support it. The same goes for range. In a small apartment, it likely won&#8217;t matter. In a large home, it could. </p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I&#8217;m thinking about getting the updated Apple MacBook Pro 13&#8242; with the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. I very much like size and weight of this laptop, but is it wise these days to invest in an Intel Core 2 Duo instead of the newer Intel chips? I mainly need it for &#8220;Office Work&#8221; (email, Internet, Word, Excel, etc.).</em></p>
<p>A. As I said in my recent PC buyer&#8217;s guide, Intel&#8217;s newest processors can give you extra speed for demanding scenarios and then ratchet down to save battery life under simpler situations. But there&#8217;s nothing  wrong with the older Core 2 Duo, or competing processors from AMD (AMD), for mainstream tasks. I wouldn&#8217;t hesitate to buy a laptop with a Core 2 Duo for the kind of tasks you anticipate, or even heavier use.</p>
<p>As for battery life, Apple (AAPL) rates the Mac model you&#8217;re considering at up to 10 hours of use between charges. In my harsh battery test, it got 7 hours. In normal use, I&#8217;d guess it would easily exceed 8 hours.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The digital world loves to revel in its own jargon, and one of its most popular phrases today is &#8220;cloud computing.&#8221; You see the expression everywhere new uses for the Internet are discussed. But what do techies and companies mean when they refer to doing things in &#8220;the cloud&#8221;? They aren&#8217;t talking about meteorology, and all they see when they use the term—which is always singular—is sunshine, not rain.</p>

<p>To help you navigate through the talk about cloud computing, here&#8217;s a very basic explainer. It doesn&#8217;t cover every detail current among Internet experts. But I hope it gives regular folks a better understanding of the &#8220;cloud&#8221; products and services being offered them.</p>
<p>At its most basic level, the &#8220;cloud&#8221; is simply the Internet, or the vast array of servers around the world that comprise it. When people say a digital document is stored, or a digital task is being performed in the cloud, they mean that the file or application lives on a server you access over an Internet connection, via a Web browser or app, rather than on &#8220;local&#8221; devices, like your computer or smartphone.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t a new idea. For years, there have been services that would back up your files to a distant server over the Internet or keep your photos online. And Web-based email programs, like Yahoo Mail or Hotmail, are familiar examples of cloud-based applications. These programs live on servers, not your PC, and you access them through a Web browser.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s changed is that, in recent years, large-scale Internet-based storage has gotten cheaper, so it&#8217;s possible for programmers to create more-sophisticated remote software, and the speed and ubiquity of Internet connections have improved. Also, some users have expressed a desire to share and collaborate in easier and richer ways than emailing files. Cloud-based services let many users view, comment on, and edit the same material. All this has given a boost to cloud computing.</p>
<p>On top of that, computers are changing in ways that make cloud services more desirable. Your little netbook may lack the huge hard disk needed to hold all your music or photos, but there are ways to keep this material in the cloud and access it at will. Your smartphone can&#8217;t run all the sophisticated programs, or store all the files, that your PC can. But, if it&#8217;s connected to cloud storage and cloud-based apps, it can do much more than its hardware specs suggest. And, with cloud file storage and apps that run on remote servers, you could conceivably travel without any computer. A borrowed PC, tablet or smartphone might be all you need to log in and  do real work.</p>
<p>So, in recent years, a flood of cloud-based products and services have appeared to store and share files; to keep information on all your devices synchronized; and even to perform tasks like editing photos, or creating and editing long documents or large spreadsheets.</p>
<p>For instance, I wrote parts of this column in a private test edition of a cloud-based version of Microsoft Word that the company will release soon. In fact, Microsoft (MSFT) will be making its entire Office suite available free in the cloud. Google (GOOG) and others already have such cloud-based productivity suites. Another example: Many of the 200,000 apps for Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone are merely small programs that tap data or services stored in the cloud to provide everything from restaurant choices to driving directions.</p>
<p>There are other good examples. At Picnik.com, you&#8217;ll find an elegant, versatile cloud-based photo editor that can work on pictures from a wide variety of Web-based photo sites as well as those on your own hard disk. At Zoho.com, you&#8217;ll find a cornucopia of cloud-based apps that interact with both the Web and your local hard disk. You can track your finances using a cloud-based program called Mint, which is available from a PC browser, or from an iPhone or Android-based phone.</p>
<p>Of course, clever readers will have noticed that this trend toward cloud computing has an obvious flaw. If you aren&#8217;t connected to the Internet—or are saddled with a poor connection—you could be left high and dry when you want access to an important file stored remotely, or need to use a cloud-based program. Google, which is building an entire cloud-based operating system, and other companies have come up with ways to store some remote material on your local device. But these solutions aren&#8217;t yet comprehensive, so wise users will make sure that the tools and files they need most are still available on their devices.</p>
<p>Some products get around this by offering hybrid cloud and local services. One of my favorites in this category is SugarSync, which backs up key folders you select to the Web and synchronizes them to the hard disks on your PCs or Macs, so you always have the freshest copies handy, whether you have a connection or not. Another problem is privacy. Many of these cloud services have good security, but prying hackers are relentless and smart, so consumers should be careful about what they store in the cloud. You may not care if a family photo is swiped, but your Social Security number is a different matter.</p>
<p>Cloud computing is here, and growing, and quite useful. It will only get better and better.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> Can the iPad can be used totally on its own, or must you sync it with another computer? If I bought an iPad for my grandmother, who has no other computer, would she be able to just download apps and music and rent movies solely via the iTunes Store on the iPad?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Yes, but with a catch. Based on what Apple (AAPL) has said, iPad owners will be able to buy apps, music and books, and buy and rent video, right on the device, without requiring a PC or Mac running iTunes software. You can also synchronize contacts, email and calendar items over the air, from an online source, instead of over a cable from your computer.</p>
<p>However, Apple&#8217;s Web site suggests you&#8217;ll need to connect to a computer running iTunes in order to back up the iPad, and, if the iPhone is any guide, you will likely need to do the same to upgrade the iPad&#8217;s operating system whenever Apple updates it. </p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I enjoyed your article on the two new Lenovo computers you&#8217;ve tested. The ThinkPad Edge sounds like a machine that will suit my needs quite well. You mentioned in the article that the machine you tested was upgraded from the base model. What were the specifications of your test machine?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>The $799 model I tested differs from the $579 base model by having a more powerful Intel (INTC) processor; 4 gigabytes of memory instead of 2 gigabytes; a 320-gigabyte hard disk versus 250 gigabytes; a different graphics card and a higher-capacity battery. <p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> In your column of March 18, you gave the advice: &#8220;There are easier ways to erase all cookies, by using a function in your Web browser.&#8221; How do you do this?</em></p>

<p>In Internet Explorer 8, select the Safety menu, choose &#8220;Delete Browsing History,&#8221; uncheck everything but &#8220;Cookies,&#8221; and click &#8220;Delete.&#8221; In Firefox 3.6, select the Tools menu, and then &#8220;Clear Recent History.&#8221; Then click &#8220;Details,&#8221; uncheck everything but &#8220;Cookies,&#8221; and pick &#8220;Everything&#8221; from the time range list. </p>
<p>In Safari 4.0, go to Preferences, then &#8220;Security,&#8221; then &#8220;Show Cookies,&#8221; then choose &#8220;Remove All.&#8221;</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> One of the intrinsic values of a hard-copy book is the ability to physically pass the book to another person once I have completed reading it. Are there e-readers out there that allow you to buy an e-book, install it on one e-reader, and then pass it on another e-reader of the same brand?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Yes, but not with as much freedom as lending a physical book. One of the advantages of the Barnes &#038; Noble (BKS) Nook e-readers is that some, though not all, titles, can be lent to the user of another Nook, or to a friend who merely uses the company&#8217;s e-reader software on a computer or a smart phone. Each book can only be lent once, however, and each loan expires after two weeks.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> If I totally erase my computer&#8217;s hard disk and then do a fresh reinstall of the operating system, will that also delete any and all would-be viruses, cookies, etc.—and restore the computer to its original &#8220;virgin&#8221; status? </em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure what you mean by a &#8220;would-be virus,&#8221; but the answer is yes. If you fully erase your hard disk with a utility that overwrites the files and free space with nonsense data, and then reinstall the operating system, the computer should act like it was new. You&#8217;d be free of any files you didn&#8217;t want.</p>
<p>There are easier ways to erase all cookies, by using a function in your Web browser. And the method you suggest would require you to spend considerable time installing any OS updates that have been issued since your operating-system disk was created, and reinstalling your programs and data files. Should you choose to do this, I&#8217;d urge you to back up your key files first.</p>

<p>If you are using a Windows PC, there are multiple programs, both free and paid, called &#8220;file wipers,&#8221; that can do this. One I have recommended is Window Washer from Webroot, which, among other things, does what the company calls &#8220;bleaching&#8221; of files so they can&#8217;t be easily recovered. If you&#8217;re using a Mac, a similar feature is built into the latest operating system versions. It&#8217;s called &#8220;Secure Empty Trash&#8221; and is found in the Finder, the Mac&#8217;s equivalent of Windows Explorer.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> In your recent article about transferring Internet video to your TV, you ignored Apple TV. Why?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Because the article was about methods for wirelessly streaming video from multiple Web sites via a PC to a TV, and that&#8217;s not what Apple TV primarily does. It mainly takes audio, video and photos that are already on your computers and plays or displays them on your TV. It only directly streams in real time from YouTube and Internet radio sites, plus content being downloaded from iTunes. Unlike the two products I covered, Apple TV doesn&#8217;t allow you to stream movies or TV programs from a variety of Web sites you choose, like Hulu or CBS.com (CBS).</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> If I get a magicJack, when I call another magicJack, can we engage the computer&#8217;s camera to converse?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> No, magicJack is an audio device, not a video one. It isn&#8217;t like Skype, which can do both. </p>

<p>Many young people don&#8217;t even bother with a cable or satellite subscription and just use their PCs or Macs to get their video fix.</p>

<p>But computer screens are small, so some folks hook the computer up to the TV for their viewing sessions. The problem with this is that it can be complicated for the technically challenged. And it can involve long cables stretching across the floor, or leaving a computer you might want for other tasks permanently connected to the TV. So companies have been working on ways to beam Internet video wirelessly from your computer to your TV.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing two of these wireless PC-to-TV solutions. Both require a secondary device that remains connected to the TV to receive the wireless signal from the computer.</p>
<p>One product is a new system from Intel (INTC), several major laptop makers and the networking equipment company Netgear (NTGR). It&#8217;s called Intel Wireless Display, or Wi-Di for short. The other is a software product called PlayOn, from a company called MediaMall. It beams video to your TV through popular game consoles such as Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) PlayStation 3 and Nintendo&#8217;s Wii. Both of these products only work on Windows computers.</p>
<p>In my tests, both systems mostly worked as advertised, but each had some downsides. The Intel system works with any video from any site you can play on the computer, but the video disappears from the TV if you are playing it in full-screen mode and get the impulse to use the computer for any other purpose while it is playing. And it only works on a handful of new, specially equipped PCs. </p>
<p>The PlayOn system will work on an existing computer, and it keeps showing a video even if you choose to use the PC for some other task. But it can&#8217;t beam just any old video to the TV, only those from services PlayOn has enabled. For instance, you can watch TV shows and movies from Hulu (partly owned by News Corp., which also owns The Wall Street Journal and its Web sites) but not from your favorite random Web site.</p>
<p>Intel&#8217;s new Wi-Di system is so far only available on three specific laptop models, one each from Toshiba, Sony and Dell (DELL), that range from $900 to $1,050. And these laptops are so far only available from Best Buy (BBY). It also requires a small $100 adapter called Push2TV from Netgear, which comes free with these laptops. </p>
<p>Wi-Di requires computers equipped with Intel&#8217;s brand new 2010 Core processors, Intel&#8217;s graphics chips and Intel&#8217;s wireless chips. Netgear and Intel say the feature will be available on other PC models later in the year.</p>
<p>I tested Wi-Di with the $900 Toshiba E205, a capable laptop with a 14-inch screen. Setup was a breeze. I just plugged the Netgear box into my TV and pushed a special Wi-Di button on the Toshiba. I typed in a code number the first time I used it, and I was in business. </p>
<p>Instantly, anything showing on the Toshiba&#8217;s screen was wirelessly replicated on the TV screen, even though I was eight feet away. </p>
<p>I tested the system with YouTube, Hulu and many other Web sites with no hitches or glitches. I also played videos stored on the PC&#8217;s hard disk. </p>
<p>Video mostly played smoothly over Wi-Di, though the quality on the TV was a bit degraded from that on the laptop screen, and HD videos didn&#8217;t look nearly as good as normal HD TV broadcasts. Also, the system isn&#8217;t satisfying unless you are streaming a video that can be viewed in full-screen mode on the PC.</p>
<p>I tested PlayOn with a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and a PlayStation 3. After hooking up the PS3, I installed the $40 PlayOn software, which runs in the background. I then navigated to the Video section of the Sony&#8217;s menu, found PlayOn listed and used the Sony&#8217;s remote control to select from supported services, which include YouTube, Hulu, Netflix (NFLX), <a href="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS.com</a> (CBS), Amazon (AMZN) Video on Demand, <a href="http://www.cnn.com/">CNN.com</a>,and <a href="http://espn.go.com/">ESPN.com</a>.</p>
<p>PlayOn also allows third-party plug-ins to add other Web video sources, such as <a href="http://www.nbc.com/">NBC.com</a>, but the company admits that the plug-in process can be clunky.</p>
<p>Video quality was about the same on PlayOn as on Wi-Di, and most programs played smoothly. With PlayOn, you don&#8217;t see the actual Web site, and you&#8217;re limited to the navigation system and options of the game console you&#8217;re using. So, I had to tediously find shows on the Sony by trolling through long lists.</p>
<p>PlayOn failed to display videos and photos stored on my PC, though to be fair the company lists this as a beta feature. And it displayed brief error messages frequently, even when it proceeded to play my chosen video properly.</p>
<p>PlayOn costs $40, and can be downloaded from <a href="http://www.playon.tv/">www.playon.tv</a>. You also must own or buy a game console, or one of a smattering of less- well-known TV adapters that the system supports.</p>
<p>Watching Internet video is a better experience with no wires to get in the way. But it can cost a lot, and needs some work. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For all the talk about new tablet computers like Apple&#8217;s iPad, laptops remain the computer industry&#8217;s bread and butter, and smaller laptops are especially popular with consumers.</p>
<p>So, I&#8217;ve been testing two diminutive laptops, both with 11-inch screens, that show how clever engineering can take a familiar device and customize it for particular audiences. These two machines couldn&#8217;t be more different, and they are aimed at radically different customers. Neither is a bargain-priced netbook, but both were designed with compactness in mind.</p>

<p>One of these products is from Dell&#8217;s Alienware group, which specializes in potent computers for hard-core gamers. The device is called the M11x, and it came out this week at a base price of $799. It&#8217;s an attempt to pack much of the power gamers typically tote around inside thicker, heavier laptops into a much more portable chassis. The M11x weighs about 4.4 pounds, which in the gaming world is svelte, and is about 1.3 inches thick.</p>
<p>The other machine I&#8217;ve been testing was released by Sony over the holiday shopping season with relatively little mass-market fanfare. It&#8217;s called the Vaio X, starts at $1,299 and is easily the lightest laptop I&#8217;ve ever reviewed. </p>
<p>In fact, it&#8217;s so light, at just 1.6 pounds, that at first I thought it must be a mock-up made of cardboard. The Vaio X is also just a tad over a half an inch thick. Its processor and graphics system are like a netbook&#8217;s, so it can&#8217;t come close to matching the Dell (DELL) in performance. But it isn&#8217;t meant for the performance market. It&#8217;s meant for highly mobile users who do typical computing, want to show off something sleek and can tolerate a high price and weak battery life in the standard configuration.</p>
<p>The M11x is a chunky box that, despite its size, is immediately recognizable as an Alienware product. The power button looks like a space alien&#8217;s face, and, along with the keyboard and some other features on the front edge, it can be made to light up and pulse in a variety of bright colors.</p>
<p>Inside, it sports dual graphics systems—one powerful discrete graphics card for heavy-duty gaming, and one lesser integrated card for other tasks or when you want to save battery life. You can switch between them quickly, without rebooting.</p>
<p>I am not a serious gamer, but I briefly tested the M11x on some included 3D games, and they ran smoothly and well. The machine also did great on high-definition video and on common tasks like Web browsing, email and word processing. It&#8217;s also packed with ports, including an HDMI connector, the new standard for easy hookup to a TV.</p>
<p>On my tough battery test, the Alienware did pretty well, clocking in at just under four hours with the more potent graphics in use, and just under five hours with the lesser graphics turned on. In normal usage patterns, you could stretch these figures.</p>
<p>The downsides to this machine are that the keyboard is cramped, and the specs on the $799 base model might not satisfy a serious gamer or video creator. It has a relatively small 160-gigabyte hard disk and a low-end Pentium processor. The model I tested, with a 500-gigabyte hard disk, a Core 2 Duo processor and twice the base 2 gigabytes of memory, costs $1,099.</p>
<p>The Sony Vaio X is a world apart, a reminder that the company, which years ago pioneered small, thin, costly laptops, can keep doing so. This little computer can get lost in your briefcase.</p>
<p>The Vaio X comes in several colors, but has modest specs for the price. It uses the Intel Atom processor, common in netbooks, and integrated graphics. It only comes with 2 gigabytes of memory, and the base $1,299 model has a very small 64-gigabyte solid-state drive for storage. You can double the storage on the $1,499 model I tested.</p>
<p>The Sony (SNE) is gorgeous, and its lightness amazed everyone to whom I showed it. It handled all the common tasks I threw at it, including some HD video from YouTube, which played fine. But it also has a cramped keyboard, plus a tiny touch pad.</p>
<p>In addition to Wi-Fi, the Sony also includes a 3G cellular modem from Verizon, which I tested and which worked well. If you opt to use it, you have to pay Verizon, with monthly contracts starting at $40 and no-contract usage at $15 a day or $30 a week. All these plans have usage caps.</p>
<p>The Achilles&#8217; heel of the Sony is battery life. Its petite built-in battery got a miserable one hour and 48 minutes in my test, which might mean 2.5 hours in normal use. Sony does include an expanded battery with the unit, which got an impressive eight hours and 11 minutes in my test, or perhaps as much as 10 in typical use. But this battery is huge. It covers the entire bottom of the machine and must be affixed with screws. The battery roughly triples the computer&#8217;s thickness and brings its weight to nearly three pounds.</p>
<p>These two creative designs show that, despite the coming wave of tablets, the laptop is still a platform for innovation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The good thing about open-source software is that it harnesses the talents of techies around the world. The bad thing about open-source software is that it&#8217;s too often geared toward such techies, not average folks. That&#8217;s why there haven&#8217;t been many widely popular open-source products for mass-market computer users. The shining exception is the Firefox Web browser, which is published by the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation.</p>
<p>Now, Mozilla is trying for another win, with a new, overhauled version of the companion email program for Firefox, called Thunderbird. Unlike Firefox, Thunderbird never really caught on, partly because it was too complicated. The foundation has spent two years streamlining, simplifying and automating the email program. The result is the newly released Thunderbird 3, which will compete with products such as Microsoft Outlook on Windows and Apple Mail on the Mac.</p>

<p>While many people these days are content to store and manage all their email using Web-based interfaces provided by Yahoo (YHOO), Google (GOOG) and others, plenty of folks still want to use local programs. These save the messages to their own hard disks, include oodles of customized features, and can be more easily used offline.</p>
<p>But the choices among such local email programs are dwindling. Outlook, which can be bloated and slow for consumers, has driven out many competitors on Windows, and the new Windows 7 doesn&#8217;t even come with a built-in email program. On the Mac, most people seem to use Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) very good built-in email program, Apple Mail, but it&#8217;s hard for third parties to customize.</p>
<p>So, can Thunderbird 3, which is free and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux computers, become the Firefox of email, the go-to choice for average users looking for an alternative to the big guys? </p>
<p>After testing the new edition for about a week, I believe that Thunderbird 3 is a significant improvement over earlier versions of the product. It is indeed a step forward, with some interesting new features and generally simpler operation. But, in my view, all the techie rough edges still haven&#8217;t been sanded off and it&#8217;s still clumsy in a few places.</p>
<p>First, the pluses. Mozilla has brought tabs, now standard in Web browsers, to Thunderbird. If you simply double click on an email in a list, it opens in its own tab. That way you can consult key emails when you need them without opening a welter of overlapping windows. If you do a search, the search results appear in their own tab.</p>
<p>The new Thunderbird also has a very cool filtered search system. It not only brings up all messages containing your search term, but shows a graphical timeline of the message traffic on that search term. In a left panel next to the list of search results, it lists all the people mentioned in the messages turned up by the search—even if you weren&#8217;t searching for them—and lets you further refine the results by just clicking on their names.</p>
<p>There is also a rapid way to add email addresses in a message header to your address book: You just click on a star icon next to the name. There also are multiple ways to view folders. With one click, you can choose to see a list of only unread folders, or favorite folders, or recent folders.</p>
<p>Another cool feature is an attachment reminder. If you are writing a message and you include words like &#8220;attachment,&#8221; &#8220;attached,&#8221; or &#8220;enclosed,&#8221; Thunderbird will pop up a yellow warning at the bottom of the screen reminding you to attach a file. </p>
<p>And, throughout the program, the designers have tried to simplify things, so you don&#8217;t have to be an engineer to use it. One example, which is a catch-up feature, is an account set-up wizard that spares you from knowing the names of servers.</p>
<p>But there are still too many issues for me. Thunderbird can&#8217;t be set to automatically show a CC or BCC line in a new email you&#8217;re composing. Every new address you add is set as a &#8220;To&#8221; address, and you must click on a drop-down menu to change it to CC or BCC—an extra step that becomes tedious quickly.</p>
<p>In addition, unlike in Outlook or Apple Mail, you can only have a single signature for each account. The program also doesn&#8217;t support Microsoft Exchange for corporate mail, unless IT administrators make changes at their servers. </p>
<p>And I found that the program&#8217;s preferences and settings, while improved, can still be too techie. For instance, to tell the program to display certain graphics in email, even though they can pose a security risk, you must choose an option called &#8220;mailnews.message_display.disable_remote_image.&#8221;</p>
<p>To be fair, because Thunderbird is an open-source program, it relies on third-party add-ons and extensions for some features, such as multiple signatures. But some of the add-ins I tried, like a built-in calendar that can synchronize with Google, took multiple complicated steps that would likely deter a mainstream user.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a new email client, the new and improved Thunderbird is worth a try, but it&#8217;s not yet the Firefox of email.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question"><em>Your review of the Evernote notes-storage service last week made it sound tempting. But do they encrypt my notes on their servers so a hacker can&#8217;t steal them? And what happens to my notes if they go out of business?</em></p>
<p>A: Evernote isn&#8217;t a purely cloud-based (Internet-based) system. It does store your notes on its servers, for Web access, but it also exists as a synchronized local application on Windows, Mac and every major smart phone. So your notes are stored locally on the hard disks of your various computers. Local storage is available on the iPhone app, and the company says it plans to add local storage to Android phones soon. Thus, even if the company went out of business, the notes on your Mac or PC or iPhone would be safe. </p>
<p>Evernote says it doesn&#8217;t encrypt data on its servers because it indexes all your notes for quick searching, and performs image recognition on photo notes, and it claims encryption would prevent that. Your user name and password, however, are always encrypted in transit, according to the company, and passwords aren&#8217;t stored on its servers—even if you have a free account. For premium users ($5 a month or $45 a year) all of the data, not just user names and passwords, are encrypted. </p>
<p>Also, the service allows users to encrypt all, or any part, of any note, and the company says it doesn&#8217;t receive the key to decrypt this material. The only part of a wholly encrypted note that the company would hold on its server would be its title and tags, if any.</p>
<p class="question"><em>I&#8217;m looking for a lightweight laptop, ideally under five pounds and with long-lasting battery life. I&#8217;m confused by all the models. Can you help me to narrow it down to a handful?</em></p>
<p>A: Unless you are looking for a tiny netbook, I suggest you consider a couple of options. One is a new category of Windows laptops variously called things like &#8220;ultrathin&#8221; and &#8220;thin and light.&#8221; All are well under five pounds in weight and many have good battery life. I reviewed three of these laptops—models from Toshiba, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Lenovo—back in November, and you can read the column at <a href="http://bit.ly/m3JQn">http://bit.ly/m3JQn</a>.</p>
<p>The second option worth considering is a Mac, which I believe has superior software and security, albeit at a higher price. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) MacBook and 13&#8243; MacBook Pro, while heavier than this new batch of Windows machines, weigh slightly under five pounds and have strong battery life. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question"><em>In reviewing Google&#8217;s new Nexus One phone, you said its memory is expandable to 32 gigabytes, but that the portion of memory used for storing apps is just 190 megabytes. Is the expandable memory unusable for apps? Is memory for apps expandable?</em></p>
<p>A: On the Nexus One, the Motorola Droid and other Android phones, there are two main types of memory: one internal, which is fixed, and the other external, in the form of removable memory cards, which the user can increase in capacity. In general, apps can be stored only in a small, restricted portion of internal memory, which on the Nexus One is a meager 190 megabytes. Although there are exceptions, apps can&#8217;t generally be stored on the roomier removable memory cards, though some files they rely upon, like graphics, can be offloaded onto the cards.</p>
<p>Google acknowledges this is a limitation, but says it designed the system to protect apps from being copied by merely removing the memory card and inserting it into a PC which could duplicate its contents. The company says it is working on ways to secure the memory cards to the satisfaction of the app developers, so that apps could be stored on them. Meanwhile, Android phones can&#8217;t hold nearly as many apps, especially sophisticated large apps, as some users might like.</p>
<p class="question"><em>AT&#038;T and Verizon are each saying that they have wide areas of coverage. Can you tell me who really has the widest area of coverage for cellphone signals?</em></p>
<p>If you are comparing basic cellphone signal availability, each of the two leaders has a very wide footprint. However, Verizon claims a larger geographic footprint when it comes to 3G networks, which are currently the fastest widely deployed cellular data networks. AT&#038;T claims its 3G is the fastest. But, partly because AT&#038;T has the iPhone, which is both popular and makes heavy data usage very easy, its network too often seems overwhelmed in large cities, in my experience. Verizon so far lacks a specific phone with similar popularity which users employ to consume as much data, and thus network capacity, as iPhone users typically do. However, iPhone-class phones like the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One, if they sell well, will test the Verizon network&#8217;s robustness.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Any idea how well or badly the new Google Nexus One syncs with Macs for things like Calendars, Notes, Address Books etc.?</em></p>
<p>The Nexus One doesn&#8217;t come with software for syncing with computers, whether Macs or PCs. It is primarily intended to sync with online calendars and address books, not those stored locally on computers. It also lacks software for syncing even larger files, like music, photos and videos. Its method for transferring those files from Macs and PCs is to connect the phone via a USB cable, causing the phone to appear to the computer as an external hard disk. You then must manually drag and drop files onto the Nexus One&#8217;s icon. In other words, Google doesn&#8217;t supply any equivalent to Apple&#8217;s iTunes or the BlackBerry media-syncing software. However, the third-party program doubleTwist, available at doubletwist.com, is designed to function as a sort of iTunes for syncing Android, Palm and BlackBerry devices. It runs on Macs and PCs and even looks a bit like iTunes. But it only syncs media files, not calendars or address books.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the hottest ideas in the digital world now is the notion of dumping the traditional personal computer, where most programs and data are stored locally, for a stripped-down device that would operate primarily as a gateway to servers on the Internet, where your programs and data are accessed remotely. This approach is often called &#8220;cloud computing.&#8221;</p>

<p>In fact, the original netbooks, the small laptops that have become very popular, were designed around this concept of relying mostly on the Web. They used low-end processors, shunned Windows, and had very little internal storage. But a combination of consumer sentiment and industry maneuvering pushed them back into the fold, so that today, most are simply cheap, small conventional Windows laptops.</p>
<p>Now, a small Boston company, called Litl, is taking another shot at this idea, with a different twist. It is selling online a highly unusual laptop it classifies as a &#8220;webbook,&#8221; which attempts to meld cloud computing with a TV-like viewing experience—for the home. This shiny, colorful computer, named the Litl, is larger and more expensive than a typical netbook. It&#8217;s about the size of a small standard laptop, with a 12-inch screen and a weight of 3.4 pounds. It costs $699, or  about twice the price of a netbook, at <a href="http://litl.com">litl.com</a>.</p>
<p>Yet the Litl doesn&#8217;t use Windows, or directly run word processors, email, or photo or music programs. It can only perform those tasks via Web sites and services like Gmail or Flckr, Google Docs or Pandora Radio. About the only local program it has that can run without an Internet connection is a virtual egg timer. It has no hard disk or any other way for a user to store anything locally. </p>
<p>The Litl&#8217;s user interface is a radical departure. There is no task bar or dock, no folders, no icons for files and programs; no traditional desktop. Instead, the Litl&#8217;s screen is filled with small cards that contain various kinds of Web content, from photos to news headlines, Facebook status and favorite Web sites. Click on a card, and its contents fill the screen. </p>

<p>And the Litl has another big difference from standard laptops or netbooks: something called &#8220;easel mode.&#8221; You can flip it around so the machine takes the form of an inverted letter &#8220;V,&#8221; with the screen facing outward. In that position, the machine can be used like a small Internet-based TV to display headlines, the weather, photo slideshows or videos from the Web. The company sells a $19 remote for controlling the computer in easel mode. You can also control it with a wheel built into the hinge.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Litl and I have mixed feelings about it. Some of the bold concepts behind the machine are refreshing, including the cloud-computing idea and the very simple interface and operating system, which demand much less work and attention from the user than a traditional PC does. The company also is promising many improvements, delivered via frequent over-the-air updates, including iPhone-type apps developed by third parties. It even offers a two-year money-back guarantee.</p>
<p>I was able to set up cards for Gmail and Yahoo Mail, and to send and receive messages. I also set up a card for Google Docs and was able to create and edit documents. I tapped into my Flickr account and could view slideshows of family photos I had previously uploaded. And I was able to watch TV shows via Hulu, both in easel mode and on my big-screen TV, once I connected the Litl to it.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, I found the device a bit clumsy and unsatisfying to use. For instance, as you add cards for your favorite Web sites or headline feeds (called channels), it becomes more difficult to scroll through screen after screen to find the one you want. There is no easy way to organize things. </p>
<p>In easel mode, when you see a headline that interests you, there is no way to click on it to read the whole story. Videos in easel mode too often stuttered. Worse, if you&#8217;re watching a video in easel mode, or through a TV, the Litl&#8217;s remote doesn&#8217;t let you pause, fast forward or back up. And the Litl doesn&#8217;t allow you to upload photos or videos to the Web.</p>
<p>The battery life is awful. The company claims 2.5 hours. In my tests, it conked out in less time. The company says that isn&#8217;t a problem, because the machine is designed for home use and will likely stay plugged in.</p>
<p>The company claims it is working on improving the Litl&#8217;s shortcomings. For instance, it plans a photo-uploading function and smoother video playback. So, it will likely get better. But, as of now, for $699, my feeling is that a standard laptop could perform many of these tasks in a more familiar, more versatile manner.</p>
<p>Cloud computing may one day be the standard way of doing things digitally, but the Litl, at least in its current form, isn&#8217;t the answer.</p>
