Panasonic Develops Hair-Washing Robot

Showcasing an interesting new use of 3D technology, Panasonic unveiled a hair-washing robot today that scans the shape and surface of a client’s head in order to apply “just the right amount of pressure” while shampooing and massaging each scalp. The robot was designed to help at understaffed healthcare facilities in Japan, where the rapidly aging population is a growing issue.

On Monday, BoomTown traveled to Los Angeles for the day to finally check in with the new management at turmoil-plagued MySpace, Co-Presidents Jason Hirschhorn and Michael Jones. The unlikely pair are now ferreting away on a slow rollout of a plan to turn MySpace into a socially-charged music and entertainment hub. Last night, Walt Mossberg and I hosted our seventh annual “What’s Hot and What’s Not in Personal Technology” program for the Churchill Club in Silicon Valley. Every year, we show off a range of new tech toys to the crowd, helped by our regular gadget freak, Greg Harper, and by guest “tech geek” celebs. This year they were Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Mike Schroepfer, the social networking site’s VP of Engineering. Here’s a video from the event.

Kara Visits PICNIC in Amsterdam (and Hopes Head Does Not Explode)

BoomTown is now right next to a canal–no falling cows in sight!–in Amsterdam, here for an unusual digital conference called PICNIC, which starts Wednesday and runs through Friday. With sessions like “We Think: The Power of Mass Creativity,” “The Emerging Real-Time Social Web” and “The Future of Business Creation,” it seems to be a place for big, messy Web ideas. But I am a little worried about keeping my head intact.
