			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In weighing the future of Nokia, Stephen Elop has had some tough decisions to make, but at least he has lots of people willing to offer up their two cents.</p>
<p>Whether he is walking the halls of Nokia&#8217;s headquarters in Espoo, Finland, or even just buying groceries at the market, Nokia&#8217;s chief executive is constantly flooded with suggestions for how the company should regain lost ground.<br />

Elop recalled being at dinner just over a week ago and being approached by three young people who wanted to share their suggestions.</p>
<p>&#8220;The three of them couldn’t quite agree on what the right strategy was, but they clearly each had an opinion,&#8221; Elop said.</p>
<p>For his part, Elop has deeply considered three possibilities for its high-end smartphone business&#8211;sticking with plans to develop around MeeGo (a mobile version of Linux), shifting to Android or adopting Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Phone.</p>
<p>Without tipping his hand, Elop spoke with Mobilized last week about the pros and cons of the various options. The interview came before releasing his big <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110209/nokias-stephen-elop-didnt-start-the-fire-but-his-burning-platform-certainly-lights-one/">&#8220;burning platform&#8221; memo</a> and literally as the final decision was being made.</p>
<p>For Elop, it came down to which approach would offer enough differentiation and yet would also be part of an ecosystem that would be large enough to attract developers, advertisers, carriers and all the other partners.</p>
<p>&#8220;It’s not just differentiation but sustainable differentiation,&#8221; Elop said. He also said that as big as Nokia is, it can&#8217;t afford to go it alone.</p>
<p>It is also critically important to Elop that the company be more competitive in the United States. Although the company ships more phones worldwide than any other company, its presence in North America is basically nonexistent. And yet, he said, the U.S. is where the pace is set for the high end of the market. </p>
<p>&#8220;We need to be in the United States in one way, shape or form,&#8221; Elop said. &#8220;We have to have a viable way to reopen doors.&#8221;</p>
<p>So where did that leave the various options?</p>
<p>Although MeeGo left plenty of room for differentiation, that option would also mean trying to be unique at the same time, as the company would have to convince others to build on the platform.</p>
<p>&#8220;For it to be a valid ecosystem, that also implies other [phone makers]&#8211;our competitors&#8211;would be attracted to it as well,&#8221; Elop said. &#8220;That’s one of the things that give it critical mass and credibility.&#8221;</p>
<p>Although Elop didn&#8217;t say so in our interview, his comments in this week&#8217;s memo suggest that his confidence there was low.</p>
<p>&#8220;We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones,” Elop said in his memo to staff. “However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market.”</p>
<p>As for Android and Windows Phone, Elop said Nokia could offer a significant boost to either ecosystem.</p>
<p>&#8220;Android is growing very nicely; it has significant market share,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The combination of Android&#8217;s existing market share plus the market share that Nokia could bring to the Android ecosystem is a very large number and would signal a very substantial shift in the dynamics of the mobile operating system market.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for Redmond&#8217;s operating system, Elop said it is early days.</p>
<p>&#8220;Windows Phone is in its early formative stages in terms of getting customer traction and so forth. It&#8217;s a beautiful product and I say that as someone who is competing with it.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, that may not be the case much longer. While Elop was still leaving all doors open when he spoke with Mobilized a week ago, the options appear to have narrowed significantly in recent days. His memo on Tuesday appeared to rule out MeeGo as the best option, while a tweet from Google&#8217;s Vic Gundotra suggests Android is out and <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110209/nokia-appears-on-verge-of-adopting-windows-phone-as-meego-android-fade-from-consideration/">a tie-up with WIndows Phone is Elop&#8217;s final choice</a>.</p>
<p>But, no matter what decision gets made at the high end, Elop said that the company probably needs a separate strategy at the low end of the market, where there is intense competition from Chinese phone makers building phones around low-cost chips from MediaTek. </p>
<p>Friday&#8217;s investor meeting will also address other aspects of the company, including its services strategy, its plans for its Navteq navigation unit and its plans to leverage its huge patent portfolio. The announcement also comes just ahead of the cell phone industry&#8217;s big trade show, Mobile World Congress, which gets going on Sunday in Barcelona.</p>

And it may herald a promising new period for the company, but only after RIM has negotiated a potentially painful transition. </p>
<p>Depending on how long it takes, the switch to QNX could cause RIM to suffer some share loss in the smartphone market, particularly its high end. That&#8217;s the theory put forth by Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley, who believes RIM&#8217;s going to have a tough time maintaining market share in higher-end smartphones given the execution risks involved in rolling out a new OS and related portfolio of products.</p>
<p>Says Walkley, &#8220;We believe RIM will likely lose high-end smartphone market share and higher-end North American subscribers over the next several quarters due to limited new high-end product launches ahead of new QNX smartphones combined with improving competitive smartphone offerings such as the Samsung and HTC Android based smartphones at most carriers.&#8221;</p>
<p>And the iPhone, likely launching at Verizon early next year, won&#8217;t make things any easier. The PlayBook, of course, has and will continue to drive upside in the months ahead&#8211;assuming its launch goes smoothly and it is as well-received as investors seem to hope. But it too faces rivals formidable enough that Walkley doesn&#8217;t see it selling much more than 1.75 million units in C2011.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe the PlayBook will struggle to compete against the iPad given the large ecosystem of applications for the iPad and the form factor and GUI of the iPad versus the PlayBook,&#8221; he concludes. &#8220;Further, we anticipate several Android-based tablets launching in 2011 at very aggressive price points and potentially running the Android 3.0 (Gingerbread version) and we anticipate an increasingly competitive environment.&#8221;</p>

But if that&#8217;s to be the case, the machine&#8211;and Apple&#8217;s ecosystem&#8211;needs to evolve a bit more to appeal to that strata of user tethered to the high-capacity hard drives that the Air has summarily dispatched.</p>
<p>This being Apple we&#8217;re talking about, that evolution is likely already well under way and perhaps&#8211;<em>perhaps</em>&#8211;being engineered at <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100222/that%E2%80%99s-apple%E2%80%99s-new-data-center-where%E2%80%99s-the-giant-glass-cube/">the company&#8217;s massive new North Carolina data center</a>.  With its <a href="http://www.catawbaedc.org/Apple.htm">500,000 square feet of data center space</a> (<em>currently</em>, sources tell me that Apple is considering doubling that) the facility has been built for something. And what better use to put it to than the cloud services that might completely eliminate the need for high-capacity hard drives and give the Air storage to match its performance characteristics.</p>
<p>Were Apple to create the cloud-based version of iTunes that&#8217;s long been rumored&#8211;one from which users&#8217; entire iTunes libraries could be streamed&#8211;and were it to bolster MobileMe&#8217;s iDisk and Gallery services with more-robust storage, even the 64GB Air might seem an attractive option to the high-end user. And Apple&#8217;s new N.C. data center, which is nearly five times the size of the one it operates in Newark, Calif., may well make both those things possible.</p>
<p> &#8220;We believe it makes sense to have a cloud service linking Apple devices to personal photos, videos, games, music and other entertainment&#8211;eliminating the limitations and expenses of excess storage,&#8221; writes Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes. &#8220;We believe such a service would only enhance the loyalty toward Apple and the benefits of using devices in its vertically integrated model.&#8221;</p>
<p>Saving to disk is slowly becoming a fixture of the past and, as Apple&#8217;s recently rejiggered Apple TV business model demonstrates, streaming is the future. Which makes perfect sense, when you think of the MacBook Air as the future of the notebook.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Executives at Gilt Groupe, the fashion retailer known for its online-only sales of high-end items, had expected to do well with their iPad app, but they were surprised by some of the results after the device was introduced.</p>
<p>On April 4, a day after the device debuted, 2.4 percent of Gilt’s sales came from the iPad, a higher portion than expected, said Gilt founder and chairman Kevin Ryan and Chief Executive Susan Lyne in an interview. The company also said that although women comprise its core constituency, iPad users seem to be mostly men. Within the first 10 days, sales of men’s products drove 63 percent of iPad-generated revenue, the company said.</p>
<p>The free “Gilt for iPad” app, one of five that were highlighted in Apple’s (AAPL) app store, has high-resolution images of products with “pinch and zoom” technology, quick navigation, and an easy shopping cart drag-and-drop feature.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting side note to GPhone (a.k.a. &#8220;Nexus One&#8221;) Day&#8211;Google is still experimenting with its &#8220;click-to-call&#8221; program for advertisers on &#8220;high-end mobile devices.&#8221; Coincidence?</p>
<p>From Greg Sterling at <a href="http://searchengineland.com/google-to-introduce-click-to-call-billing-in-ads-on-mobile-devices-32831">Search Engine Land</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Google sent out notification to its AdWords advertisers that this month “your location-specific business phone number will display alongside your destination url in ads that appear on high-end mobile devices. Users will be able to click-to-call your business just as easily as they click to visit your website. You’ll be charged for clicks to call, same as you are for clicks to visit your website.”</p></blockquote>
<p>Note that this offer doesn&#8217;t appear to be specific to phones running Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android operating system. And it appears to be running in <em>addition</em> to Google&#8217;s practice of providing phone numbers in organic search results, which also essentially provide &#8220;click to call&#8221; options for smartphone users.</p>
<p>In Sterling&#8217;s words: &#8220;This is a version, effectively, of “pay-per-phone call” but the cost per call is the same as a click&#8211;a bargain (generally speaking) for the advertisers to receive a &#8216;warm lead.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Google first started playing around with &#8220;click to call&#8221; programs for conventional Web search four years ago. In that scenario, you gave Google your phone number (this was designed for landline use, really), and it connected calls to advertisers on your behalf.</p>
<p>Google eventually moved on, since no one seemed to use this option (though you can still see traces of the program <a href="http://www.google.com/help/privacy_clicktocall.html">here</a>). But connecting mobile users with advertisers ought to be a very lucrative proposition, so no surprise that Google is still chasing after this.</p>

Just ask Apple, which rules it and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090721/aapl-q3/">with great financial success</a>.</p>
<p>According to new stats from NPD Group, Apple now claims <a href="http://www.betanews.com/joewilcox/article/Apple-has-91-of-market-for-1000-PCs-says-NPD/1248313624">91 percent of the U.S. retail market for personal computers costing more than $1,000</a>. Nine out of 10 dollars spent on such machines in June went to Cupertino.</p>
<p>Now, granted, Cupertino only sells <em>three</em> Macs priced below $1,000 (the 13-inch MacBook and both versions of the Mac Mini), and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) rivals’ offerings typically price out in the $690 -to-$703 range. Still, that 91 percent metric is impressive.</p>
<p>As Joe Wilcox over at Betanews puts it, &#8220;A (higher pricing) doesn&#8217;t necessarily lead to B (greater sales). All major Windows OEMs sell PCs in the premium category, too. Apple&#8217;s charging more isn&#8217;t necessarily recipe for people paying more for Macs, or their capturing big revenue share.&#8221;</p>
<p>That said, as NPD analyst Stephen Baker points out, Windows product average selling prices have been falling pretty rapidly over time, especially at retail, so it was inevitable that Apple’s share of the high-end market would rise, since the company hasn’t really altered its pricing philosophy.</p>

<p>Global mobile handset sales fell at a record pace in the first quarter of 2009. And they’re likely to do so once again in the second. That’s the grim news today from Gartner, which reports that <a href="http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=985912">first-quarter sales of handsets fell to 269 million units</a>, down 14.5 percent from the fourth quarter of 2008 and 9.4 percent from a year earlier.</p>
<p>&#8220;There were some signs of a recovery in markets such as North America and China, but overall sales in the first quarter of 2009 registered the biggest quarter-on-quarter contraction since Gartner began monitoring the market on a quarterly basis in 2001,&#8221; <a href="http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200905200604DOWJONESDJONLINE000461_FORTUNE5.htm">said Gartner research director Carolina Milanesi</a>. &#8220;We really don&#8217;t see demand stabilizing before the second half of 2010.”</p>
<p>Demand for low-end mobile phones, that is. Smart phones are doing just fine. Their sales rose 12.7 percent to 36 million units. That’s 13.5 percent of all mobile devices sold in the first quarter, up from 11 percent a year earlier. The chief beneficiaries of this trend: Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM).</p>
<p>Apple doubled its share of the smart phone market in the first quarter of 2009, nabbing 10.8 percent of worldwide sales, up from 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2008. The company sold 3.9 million iPhones during Q1 2009, more than double the 1.7 million it sold in the first quarter of 2008. Meanwhile, RIM&#8217;s share of the smart phone market reached 19.9 percent in the first quarter, up from 13.3 per cent a year earlier. It sold 7.2 million BlackBerry devices to end users, up from 4.3 million in the same period a year earlier.</p>
<p>Incidentally, Nokia (NOK) remains the market leader in smart phones and handsets overall, though its share in both is declining. The company claimed 36.2 percent of the handset market in the first quarter of 2009, down from 39.1 percent in the first quarter of 2008. Its share of the smart phone market dropped to 41.2 percent from 45.1 percent during the same period.</p>
<p>How is it that smart phone makers like Apple and RIM are defying a downturn that’s playing havoc with their dumbphone-manufacturing colleagues? Touchscreens and app stores.</p>
<p>Said Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza: “Much of the smartphone growth during the first quarter of 2009 was driven by touchscreen products, both in midtier and high-end devices. &#8216;Touch for the sake of touch&#8217; was enough of a driver in the midtier space, but tighter integration with applications and services around music, mobile email, and Internet browsing made the difference at the high end of the market.”</p>
<p>Good news for Palm (PALM), which is <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090519/palm-pre-june-6-19999/">bringing a device that fits that bill to market on June 6</a>.</p>

<p>The media will gather tomorrow at Apple&#8217;s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters for <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081009/apple-announces-oct-14-notebook-event/">an invitation-only event</a>&#8211;presumably about updates to its MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. And as with every Apple (AAPL) product launch, tomorrow&#8217;s has been preceded by feverish speculation about what form, exactly, those updates will take. Among the rumors currently making the rounds:</p>

<li>Apple will uncrate a new line of MacBooks whose cases are <a href="http://9to5mac.com/macbook-brick">carved from a single brick of aircraft-grade aluminum</a>.</li>
<li>Apple&#8217;s refreshed MacBook line will include a machine priced at below $1000, perhaps even <a href="http://www.inquisitr.com/4834/exclusive-apple-to-launch-800-laptop/">as low as $800</a>.</li>
<li>The new MacBooks will feature  <a href="http://macenstein.com/default/archives/1721">glass, multi-touch trackpads</a> and <a href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20080521PB201.html"> LED-backlit displays</a>.</li>
<li>They&#8217;ll swap out Intel&#8217;s chipset&#8211;not the central processor&#8211;for <a href="http://macsoda.com/2008/10/02/nvidia-event-moved-to-familiar-date/">Nvidia&#8217;s MCP7A</a>, which reportedly blows the doors off Intel&#8217;s G45 in the graphics department.</li>
<li>Blu-ray will be offered as <a href="http://revision3.com/blog/2008/10/11/amazing-diggnation-in-london/">an option</a> on high-end models.</li>
<li>Finally, Apple&#8217;s new line of portables will include the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080725/itablet/">unmatchable &#8220;state-of-the-art new product&#8221;</a> to which Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer and COO Tim Cook  referred earlier this year, and that product will be a tablet. <p>The media will gather tomorrow at Apple&#8217;s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters for <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081009/apple-announces-oct-14-notebook-event/">an invitation-only event</a>&#8211;presumably about updates to its MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. And as with every Apple (AAPL) product launch, tomorrow&#8217;s has been preceded by feverish speculation about what form, exactly, those updates will take. Among the rumors currently making the rounds:</p>
<ul>
<li>Apple will uncrate a new line of MacBooks whose cases are <a href="http://9to5mac.com/macbook-brick">carved from a single brick of aircraft-grade aluminum</a>.</li>
<li>Apple&#8217;s refreshed MacBook line will include a machine priced at below $1000, perhaps even <a href="http://www.inquisitr.com/4834/exclusive-apple-to-launch-800-laptop/">as low as $800</a>.</li>
<li>The new MacBooks will feature  <a href="http://macenstein.com/default/archives/1721">glass, multi-touch trackpads</a> and <a href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20080521PB201.html"> LED-backlit displays</a>.</li>
<li>They&#8217;ll swap out Intel&#8217;s chipset&#8211;not the central processor&#8211;for <a href="http://macsoda.com/2008/10/02/nvidia-event-moved-to-familiar-date/">Nvidia&#8217;s MCP7A</a>, which reportedly blows the doors off Intel&#8217;s G45 in the graphics department.</li>
<li>Blu-ray will be offered as <a href="http://revision3.com/blog/2008/10/11/amazing-diggnation-in-london/">an option</a> on high-end models.</li>
<li>Finally, Apple&#8217;s new line of portables will include the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080725/itablet/">unmatchable &#8220;state-of-the-art new product&#8221;</a> to which Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer and COO Tim Cook  referred earlier this year, and that product will be a tablet. Something along the lines of the &#8220;MacBook Touch&#8221; <a href="http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/rumor_apples_secret_product_is_macbook_touch/">described by MacDailyNews</a> back in July.<br />

<p>An interesting spread of rumors, some quite likely, others improbable &#8230; and yet entirely plausible because, after all, it&#8217;s Apple we&#8217;re talking about.
