<p>According to sources close to the situation, Twitter VP of Engineering Mike Abbott has left the company.</p>
<p>He is apparently interested in doing more investing.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE:</strong> Twitter confirmed the departure in a statement, noting that Abbott was joining Benchmark Capital as an entrepreneur in residence. Benchmark&rsquo;s Peter Fenton is on the Twitter board.</p>
<p>&#8220;We can confirm that Mike Abbott is no longer with Twitter. Mike will be available to assist the company in his new role as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Capital. We thank Mike for his leadership in growing an outstanding team of engineers from 100 to 400 that have successfully taken on the unique challenge of making Twitter reliable and stable. While Mike led the engineering team, Twitter grew from handling 55 million tweets a day to 230 million. Twitter is focused on aggressively moving forward to fulfill the profound opportunities that are in front of us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said Fenton:</p>
<p>&#8220;What Mike Abbott accomplished at Twitter is nothing short of heroic, when Benchmark introduced him to the company we felt he had the courage and entrepreneurial drive to build a strong engineering foundation. <p>The move feels sudden, but sources said it has been brewing for a while and happened several days ago.</p>
<p>Abbott was a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100417/the-palm-anti-brain-drain-filings-collect-the-entire-set/">high-profile hire</a> for Twitter a little over a year ago from Palm, where he served as head of its software and services, in charge of its webOS platform.</p>
<p>He was brought in to bring a level of discipline and reliability to the Twitter communications platform and service, which was plagued by persistent outages that made the Fail Whale infamous.</p>
<p>In large part, Abbott has done that, as Twitter has grown significantly. It now has 230 million tweets per day, he said in a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110927/nearly-half-of-tweets-originate-from-mobile-says-twitter-engineering-head/">recent interview</a>.</p>
<p>Twitter does not have a replacement as yet, sources said.</p>

<p>She is currently located in Chicago, where the social buying site is headquartered.</p>
<p>A Google spokesman confirmed the move by Georgiadis, while Groupon&#8211;which specifically denied a query about her appointment that BoomTown made Tuesday&#8211;dithered.</p>
<p>In a statement, her boss, SVP and Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora said:</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m grateful for all that Margo has done for our team over the past two years. We will miss her, but we&#8217;re also very excited that she&#8217;s joining a terrific company and a great partner for Google.&#8221;</p>
<p>Besides COO, I will officially bestow the title of &#8220;Chief Cat Wrangler&#8221; on Georgiadis, for the massive organizational job ahead for her at the notoriously chaotic start-up. (As evidenced by <em>Google</em> being the company confirming a major Groupon hire.)</p>
<p>Still, Groupon&#8217;s growth had been stunning. It now has thousands of employees and has already washed out one COO, former Yahoo exec Rob Solomon, whose <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110322/exclusive-groupon-president-rob-solomon-steps-down/">departure was reported here</a>.</p>
<p>It has also turned down a $6 billion acquisition offer from Google, raised a badillion dollars in venture funding from tech&#8217;s top investors and also is prepping an IPO valuing the company at upwards of $15 billion.</p>
<p><em>Phew!</em></p>
<p>Georgiadis must bring calm to this perfect storm.</p>
<p>Because of her solid resume (see below) and quiet demeanor, I had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110329/wanted-groupon-coo-must-like-cat-wrangling-lack-of-spotlight-and-international-travel-post-samwer/">included her in a list of candidates</a> several weeks ago and had queried the social buying company about her specifically this week.</p>
<p>In fact, when I asked for a comment if Georgiadis was hired on Tuesday, a Groupon spokeswoman said: &#8220;This would be news to me. Nothing to announce yet.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the time, Google had the class to simply say &#8220;no comment.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/mason.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/mason-275x196.jpg" alt="" title="mason" width="275" height="196" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-42122" /></a></p>
<p><em>(Lesson learned!)</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20110421/NEWS08/110429964/groupon-hires-coo-from-google">Crain&#8217;s Chicago Business&#8217; John Pletz</a> first posted on Georgiadis&#8217; hiring earlier today.</p>
<p>In any case, Georgiadis is just the kind of candidate that Groupon has been looking for&#8211;a competent and experienced sales and operations exec who would not overshadow its quirky CEO and co-founder Andrew Mason.</p>
<p>As I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110329/wanted-groupon-coo-must-like-cat-wrangling-lack-of-spotlight-and-international-travel-post-samwer/">wrote two weeks ago</a>:</p>
<blockquote classs="memo"><p>Lastly, and perhaps most important, the Groupon COO candidate is going to have to accept that the role will not be a CEO-in-waiting, either before or after its inevitable IPO in the next year.</p>
<p>While I have received several tips that co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason might not stay its principal exec, extensive checking with sources inside and outside the company indicate that such a move is highly unlikely.</p>
<p>&#8220;Andrew is beloved to the board, by investors and, most of all, by employees,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;He&#8217;s not going anywhere.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Mason has a close working relationship with co-founder Brad Keywell, as well as Groupon co-founder and Chairman Eric Lefkofsky.</p>
<p>In fact, despite other business interests, Lefkofsky has been very involved in all key decisions with Mason.</p>
<p>That job, presumably, would fall to the new COO, which Groupon should be hiring sooner rather than later.</p>
<p>&#8220;Groupon needs a world-class COO, who can manage hyper-growth, but also who knows that a No. 2 stays in the background while doing it,&#8221; said another source. &#8220;That&#8217;s a tall order.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Groupon has looked at a number of top execs, most specificially at former DoubleClick and Google exec David Rosenblatt. Sources said the high-profile exec did not want to play second fiddle to Mason or move to Chicago.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s moot now. Here is Georgiadis&#8217; bio at the Silicon Valley search giant, which shows why Groupon picked her:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Georgiadis is responsible for driving Google&#8217;s sales operations and strategies across regions, channels and products as well as leading the sales technology teams which enable the successful commercialization of Google’s products (e.g., AdWords, AdSense, display and mobile ads) with advertisers and publishers.</p>
<p>She also leads the company&#8217;s local and commerce businesses, working to extend services like Checkout, Google Places and commerce search to small and large businesses alike.</p>
<p>Before joining Google, Margo was a principal in Synetro Capital LLC, a private investment firm based in Chicago. She also spent five years as the executive vice president of card products and chief marketing officer of Discover Financial Services where she led a radical turnaround of business performance and revitalized its rewards leadership with award-winning new products, customer experience and marketing. Prior to Discover, Margo was a partner at McKinsey and Company for 15 years in London and Chicago. She was a leader in the firm’s marketing and retail practices, and also co-founded and led the customer acquisition and management and retail marketing practices.</p>
<p>She has a bachelor&#8217;s degree in economics from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.</p></blockquote>

<p>Of all the many job openings in tech, perhaps the most interesting to watch will be who Groupon selects as its next COO.</p>
<p>The search has been on for a while for the critical hire for the Chicago-based social buying company, well before the recent announcement that it was parting ways with President and COO Rob Solomon.</p>
<p>Among those approached, said sources close to Groupon: Former Doubleclick and Google exec David Rosenblatt.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s not taking the job for a variety of reasons, sources said, but<br />
finding someone to step up for the job will be tough, since it is likely to be one that will require a wide range of talents.</p>
<p>That includes: epic cat-wrangling of thousands of employees in far-flung locations; deep marketing and advertising prowess; high-level technology, product, mobile and e-commerce chops; and international experience.</p>
<p>The last is perhaps the most critical of all, since global growth&#8211;especially in Europe and Asia&#8211;is increasingly becoming Groupon&#8217;s main revenue driver, and the COO will have to pull together a crack team across the world.</p>
<p>That will become even more important after Groupon&#8217;s top international managers&#8211;Germany&#8217;s entrepreneurial Samwer brothers&#8211;move out of active management by the end of this year.</p>

<p>While company sources said this has been long planned, the Samwers (pictured here) have been fully involved in Groupon&#8217;s fast trajectory in Europe and elsewhere, since it <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100517/shopping-site-groupon-buys-germanys-citydeal">bought their Citydeal discounting clone last May</a>.</p>
<p>Thus, sources said, Groupon is looking at a range of candidates with experience abroad, as well as talent in scaling businesses quickly and to huge size.</p>
<p>And that means looking to companies such as Google and Amazon for an exec, where there are quite a few choices.</p>
<p>While BoomTown could not confirm whether Groupon has spoken to any of them, possible COO types are obvious.</p>
<p>At Amazon, some qualified execs include: Sebastian J. Gunningham, SVP of Seller Services; Diego Piacentini, SVP of International Retail; H. Brian Valentine, SVP of Ecommerce Platform; and Jeffrey A. Wilke, SVP of North America Retail.</p>
<p>At Google, there are tons of good candidates that Facebook has not yet raided, including: Stephanie Tilenius, VP of eCommerce; Henrique de Castro, VP of Media and Global Platforms; Dennis Woodside, VP of Americas Operations; and Margo Georgiadis, VP of Global Sales Operations (plus a Chicagoan!).</p>
<p>Other names being raised include Hulu&#8217;s Jason Kilar (unlikely, but I&#8217;d like it), various Microsoft execs and a spate of others.</p>
<p>(I say, let&#8217;s bring in Zynga&#8217;s Owen Van Natta, who was once COO of Facebook, since he&#8217;s missing a big pile of Groupon stock to add to his enviable collection of hot Web 2.0 company shares.)</p>
<p>While there are probably qualified execs outside the tech industry at retail and media outfits, sources said it is likely Groupon will select within the digital ranks.</p>
<p>Lastly, and perhaps most important, the Groupon COO candidate is going to have to accept that the role will not be a CEO-in-waiting, either before or after its inevitable IPO in the next year.</p>

<p>While I have received several tips that Co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason (pictured here) might not stay its principal exec, extensive checking with sources inside and outside the company indicate that such a move is highly unlikely.</p>
<p>&#8220;Andrew is beloved to the board, by investors and, most of all, by employees,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;He&#8217;s not going anywhere.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Mason has a close working relationship with Co-founder Brad Keywell, as well as Groupon Co-founder and Chairman Eric Lefkofsky.</p>
<p>In fact, despite other business interests, Lefkofsky has been very involved in all key decisions with Mason.</p>
<p>That job, presumably, would fall to the new COO, which Groupon should be hiring sooner rather than later.</p>
<p>&#8220;Groupon needs a world-class COO, who can manage hyper-growth, but also who knows that a No. 2 stays in the background while doing it,&#8221; said another source. &#8220;That&#8217;s a tall order.&#8221;</p>

She&#8217;ll be reporting to Adam Bain, the company&#8217;s president of global revenue, who joined last year from Fox Interactive Media.</p>
<p>Steele is a longtime marketing exec with previous stints at the video ad start-up Tremor Media and Coca-Cola. She comes to Twitter at a time when the company is finally focusing on turning its service into a business. Twitter is expected to have about $100 million in revenue in 2011. It was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">valued at $3.7 billion</a> in its most recent funding round, and well above that in <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101129/twitters-buffet-of-options-investors-like-dst-or-acquirers-like-google/">off-and-on acquisition talks with Facebook and Google</a>.</p>

<p>The latest exec to leave the Googleplex for AOL* is <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=1378498&#038;authType=name&#038;authToken=8rCD&#038;locale=en_US&#038;pvs=pp&#038;pohelp=&#038;trk=ppro_viewmore">John Burke</a>, who is now SVP of &#8220;Global Sales Strategy,&#8221; reporting to sales head Jeff Levick, who was Armstrong&#8217;s first major hire (from Google, of course).</p>
<p>Burke is a longtime Googler&#8211;he arrived pre-IPO, in 2002&#8211;who started off running the technology &#8220;vertical&#8221; for its sales team and eventually oversaw 10 more industry categories by the time he left. Last title: &#8220;Managing Director, Industry Development and Marketing.&#8221;</p>
<p>AOL provided me with this quote from Levick when I asked them about the hire:</p>

<p>This time, the social buying site is targeting Jason Harinstein, who is Google&#8217;s director of corporate development. He would be the latest in a string of high-profile hires for the Chicago-based company.</p>
<p>Harinstein is expected to fill a similar role at the well-financed daily-deals site, including mergers and acquistions and other corporate deal-making. <strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://www.groupon.com/blog/cities/announcing-new-talent-at-groupon/">Groupon has officially announced it has hired Harinstein</a>, who will serve as SVP of Corporate Development.<a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonharinstein"></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonharinstein"> </a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonharinstein">According to LinkedIn</a>, he led several major transactions at Google, including the acquisitions of DoubleClick and ITA Software.</p>
<p>Groupon, which has been around only since 2008, has built a giant business in a short time by linking customers with mostly local merchants via heavily discounted daily deals.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been trying to replicate that business around the globe, often times acquiring local providers to get up to speed quickly. Its latest moves have been in China, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110128/groupon-may-invest-in-chinese-competitor-at-billion-dollar-valuation/">where it&#8217;s considering a combination of buying, building or a strategic investment</a>.</p>
<p>The company continues to solidify its management team ahead of a potential public offering. Not too long ago, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110124/groupons-andrew-mason-explains-why-he-is-coy-on-google-acquisition-he-doesnt-kiss-and-tell/">Groupon said it was undecided about its next step</a>, but now we hear it is leaning toward Morgan Stanley as its banker.</p>
<p>Harinstein, who has worked at Google for nearly six years, would closely follow other execs willing to make the move to the Midwest company. He is currently located in New York.</p>
<p>Late last month, Mobilized&#8217;s Ina Fried reported that <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110128/exclusive-yahoo-mobile-vp-michael-shim-headed-to-groupon/">Yahoo Mobile VP Michael Shim was headed to Groupon</a>; <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101208/yahoos-ad-talent-loss-is-groupons-gain-lee-brown-will-be-social-buying-phenoms-head-of-national-sales/">Yahoo also lost Lee Brown to Groupon to head national sales</a>, according to a post by BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher; and from a little farther north, Groupon <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20101220/groupon-at-last-a-cfo-amazon-vet-tapped/">scooped up Amazon vet Jason Child as CFO</a>.</p>
<p>If this hire materializes, it would be yet another a blow to Google&#8217;s ego, which failed to acquire Groupon for $6 billion late last year. It&#8217;s not clear if Harinstein worked on the deal or not, which would have given Groupon execs some insight to his talent. Google has not yet responded.</p>
<p>Keeping with Groupon&#8217;s humorous style, as part of Harinstein&#8217;s announcement, it also said it has hired Rob Grabowski, who will be in charge of supplies, such as &#8220;stocking Diet Coke, Vitamin Water and tiny flannel shirts in kitchens across four floors of Groupon headquarters.&#8221; He most recently worked as an office assistant at a comedy club in Chicago.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2179" title="paypal_sarah" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/paypal_sarah.jpg" alt="" width="129" height="134" />The company confirmed the appointment to us after we got wind of an internal memo sent out to employees today.</p>
<p>In her new position at eBay-owned PayPal, Brody will focus on improving the PayPal user experience and making sure that its payment platform is easy to use.</p>
<p>Brody was previously at Apple, where she worked on the first iPhone and an early version of the iPod Nano. Some of her more recent design work can be seen on the homepages of <a href="http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/">Final Cut Studio</a>, <a href="http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/">Logic Studio</a> and <a href="http://www.apple.com/pro/">Pro</a>.</p>
<p>Picking up a design guru from Apple, which is known for its simple, yet exquisite, designs (and preference for as few buttons as possible), is a coup for PayPal.</p>
<p>However, just last week <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110126/paypal-loses-top-payment-exec-to-google-appoints-new-head/">the company announced it had lost Osama Bedier</a>, who took a job at Google after working for PayPal for eight years, and most recently oversaw the company&#8217;s global payments platform, including mobile.</p>
<p><strong>Correction:</strong> In a previous version of the story, we wrote that the memo also said PayPal was still on the hunt for a new leader for its global product and experience leadership team. However, Sam Shrauger was promoted internally into the position.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE 2:</strong> We also learned today that PayPal&#8217;s parent company, eBay, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110131/exclusive-seeking-better-search-results-ebay-finds-experts-at-bing-and-facebook/">has hired two new search experts from Facebook and Microsoft</a>.</p>

Now Dick Costolo&#8217;s job is to turn it into a business&#8211;one big enough to justify the sky-high valuation investors have given the messaging company.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll talk to Kara Swisher about the company&#8217;s efforts to sell advertising on the service, and if we&#8217;re lucky, he&#8217;ll give us a glimpse of his improv comedy roots, too. Don&#8217;t be shy, Dick!</p>
<p>Dick starts off by insulting Kara&#8217;s vest. &#8220;Matador casual,&#8221; he calls it. Good one! Kara responds by asking him why he&#8217;s hanging out at CES.</p>

<p>The same reason everyone else is, Dick says: To talk to industry people. For example, he&#8217;d like to get device makers to preload some features like &#8220;Fast Follow.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara wants to know if Dick would like a &#8220;Twitter button&#8221; installed on phones. No, says Dick. But he&#8217;d like Twitter to work the same way on different platforms.</p>
<p>So how do you make that happen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re assigning a product team to make sure that this happens.</p>
<p>Kara: And you&#8217;re talking to TV people, too? What&#8217;s that about?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Because mainstream TV viewing, more and more, they have a device in their hand when they&#8217;re watching TV. Like on &#8220;Glee.&#8221; The characters tweet while the show is on. [This baffles Kara.] When &#8220;Glee&#8221; starts, tweets per second for &#8220;Glee&#8221; shoot up, and stay up 100 times that level until the show ends, and then they drop.</p>
<p>That has interesting implications. Like, it takes the DVR out of the mix, because you have to watch in real time to make it worthwhile.</p>

<p>But we don&#8217;t know if all of this means Twitter while you watch TV, or Twitter actually on your TV screen.</p>
<p>Kara: Is it important for you to be on the screen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re already on the screen. But we don&#8217;t know if that will be the mainstream experience.</p>
<p>Kara: We had Steve Levitan from &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; talking about how the Web doesn&#8217;t help him, but that he and his team like Twitter.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! &#8220;I was having a conversation with Conan O&#8217;Brien, as one does&#8221; and he was talking about the importance of Twitter to him, and how the 140 character limit is the right length for a joke. It&#8217;s definitely the case that network TV people like Twitter, because it gives them feedback, like they&#8217;re in the theater, watching how the shows play out.</p>
<p>Kara: Keep talking about celebrities! I love celebrities.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! The folks that we&#8217;ve hired to work with talent and agencies, etc., we think of those people has high-value publishers. They have a huge following. A lot of people are on Twitter just to hear what those folks have to say.</p>

<p>The interesting thing about the top 200 to 300 tweeters&#8211;a lot of them are musicians, actors, etc. LeBron James, etc. I think Lady Gaga is number one. But! They&#8217;re not <em>all</em> celebrities. There&#8217;s CNN Breaking News. And the New York Times. And other brands like Gary Vaynerchuk, who aren&#8217;t really that known outside that world.</p>
<p>And Twitter is disaggregating some of those businesses. Like a third of all the players in the NFL playoffs are using Twitter actively. And many players have more followers than their teams. [Here Dick explains football to Kara.] That&#8217;s fascinating.</p>
<p>Kara: Let&#8217;s go back to phones. Whats the most important device? Tablet? PC? Phone?</p>
<p>Dick: Mobile is a more and more and more common use of Twitter&#8211;40 percent of all tweets created on mobile devices. That might seem low, but it was 25 percent a year ago. 50 percent of active users are also active on mobile.</p>
<p>But Twitter ought to work platform to platform. We want to be agnostic.</p>
<p>Kara: What about what&#8217;s coming out from Palm? Working with them?</p>
<p>Dick: Not yet.</p>
<p>Kara: What about games? Talking to those guys?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Like with Microsoft on their Xbox, you can see integrating tweets into people who have discussions on Xbox.</p>
<p>Dick: You lost interest in the answer to your question. [True!]</p>
<p>Kara: You&#8217;re so annoying.</p>
<p>[Some laughter. Not a lot, though!]</p>
<p>Dick: Anyway, the important thing for us is consistency across device to device to device.</p>
<p>Kara: Speaking of working consistently, how&#8217;s that going for Twitter?</p>
<p>Dick: Right. So, we raised a bunch of money. We&#8217;re hiring &#8220;tons of engineers and operations engineers&#8221; in the last year. We hired 100 people in Q4, out of about 350 total. And we&#8217;re working very hard on erasing our &#8220;technical debt.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: &#8220;That&#8217;s a great word for fuck-ups&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick: Anyway, we&#8217;ve got a guy assigned to this pretty much exclusively. And there used to be a tolerance for this, and now there isn&#8217;t. If someone fires a pistol next to your ear every hour, after a while you stop flinching when you hear it. It&#8217;s crucial that we do this, both for our users and our engineers, who shouldn&#8217;t have to get up at 3 am all the time.</p>
<p>Kara: Time for a vision question, which stumps Yahoo. What is Twitter? What is your vision?</p>
<p>Dick: &#8220;We want to instantly connect people everywhere to what&#8217;s most important to them.&#8221;</p>
<p>See, that&#8217;s a good statement. We&#8217;re not just a social network that&#8217;s connecting people. It&#8217;s connecting for a purpose.</p>
<p>So some people meet girlfriends on Twitter. And other people get tickets to shows they like on Twitter. Etc.</p>
<p>And you don&#8217;t have to tweet to get a lot of value out of it.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s the percentage of people who just read Twitter, and don&#8217;t tweet themselves?</p>
<p>Dick: Rising. And we have to make that easier to do. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to spend a lot of time making that consumption experience much better.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s your business plan?</p>
<p>Dick: To continue to raise money!</p>

<p>Dick: I&#8217;m going to steal Jeff Weiner&#8217;s line. We&#8217;re a technology company that&#8217;s in the media business. Our business model is an advertising model [cough, cough, that's familiar! You're welcome!] So we&#8217;re selling ads, and we&#8217;re letting people promote their accounts, etc. And we really don&#8217;t have to do anything else. Our engagement rates on these ads are ridiculously high. When we saw our stats this last spring when we launched, the numbers were so big we thought we were measuring it incorrectly.</p>
<p>Kara: Is that a big enough business to be a standalone company and/or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: It&#8217;s enough to be a standalone company.</p>
<p>Kara: Sell or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: We want to be a standalone company. It&#8217;s my sincere hope. We&#8217;ve accomplished 1 percent of what we want to do.</p>

<p>Kara: You like to sell companies, though.</p>
<p>Dick. Yes, I had two companies that I sold. But that doesn&#8217;t mean we&#8217;ll sell this one. I&#8217;ve had two kids too. But I shouldn&#8217;t get a reputation for having kids.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s up with people buying and selling secondary shares of Twitter. It&#8217;s an issue for Facebook. What about you?</p>
<p>Dick: We keep an eye on it, and talk to employees about it. But I just think that there are other people that are focusing on it and paying attention, and I&#8217;ll let them talk about it. But I just don&#8217;t think about that stuff on a day-to-day basis.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>
<p><strong>Q: [sorry missed it].</strong></p>
<p>But answer seems to be about whether Twitter is a platform company or not. Dick quotes Ev Williams by saying they&#8217;re not a platform company&#8211;they&#8217;ve had an API. They want people to be able build off Twitter and build into Twitter. Which requires a more robust API.</p>
<p>Kara has more questions. How do you look at yourself as a leader?</p>
<p>Dick: As a very bald leader.</p>
<p>Kara: But you&#8217;re very different than Evan.</p>
<p>Dick: Right. Two components. Three founders at company: Ev, Jack, Biz. They all come at it from a different angle. Jack thinks about simplicity and elegance and the mobile experience. Ev thinks about the user. Biz is &#8220;the protector of the brand and the guardian of the culture.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: He&#8217;e the guy who goes on Colbert.</p>
<p>Dick: And he&#8217;s great at it. Anyway, those guys are great. My focus is on operational greatness. I try to emulate operators like Ben Horowitz (Opsware) and Susan Wojcicki (Google).</p>

<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s up with that internal page rank for each user? asks Ben Parr from Mashable.</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Your&#8217;re not exactly right. We play around with stuff like that. But there&#8217;s nothing robust that we would think of productizing anytime soon, and we don&#8217;t use it for things like resonance, which we use in ads.</p>
<p><strong>Q: [Sorry, couldnt quite understand.]</strong></p>
<p>Dick is talking about WikiLeaks in general, says there was something specific about WikiLeaks today that he can’t talk about. In general, he hates government mandates to keep things quiet. And he hates that a woman in China was punished for retweeting something. He reiterates Twitter&#8217;s desire to connect people with useful information. “We’re going to lash out at things that prevent us from doing that, as aggressively as we can.” The proof is that we’re banned in China. “We’re not going to sacrifice what we’re trying to do to, you know, get into this country over here.”</p>

<p><strong>Q: How will you work with brands in the future, vs. advertising?</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Our promoted suite of stuff doesn&#8217;t simply let advertisers use a giant bullhorn. This stuff has to be organic. &#8220;It almost is like a quality-assurance program.&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick is now talking about Twitter and international growth and language. Twitter is growing fast in the U.K. but not in Germany. Why is that? Because German has really, really long words. &#8220;There&#8217;s a bunch of stuff we want to do, and have to do&#8221; just to make things usable in those languages.</p>
<p><strong>Last question, from Kara: What&#8217;s the most interesting thing you&#8217;ve seen at CES?</strong></p>
<p>Dick won&#8217;t give a one-word answer. CES is a &#8220;quantum conference.&#8221; Some years are transformational, some are incremental. &#8220;This seems like it was an incremental year.&#8221;</p>

<p>It is always nice when an intern makes good, and that is entirely the case with Drake Martinet (pictured here), who joins <strong>All Things Digital</strong>&#8211;as of yesterday, in fact.</p>
<p>We could not be happier. Plus, we knew he was our kind of geek after he agreed to spend the night in a tent next to Robert Scoble, to cover last year&#8217;s Apple iPad release.</p>
<p>That was when Drake was an <strong>ATD</strong> intern, until he headed to the New York Times this past summer to work on social media efforts in the newsroom.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s one of the many things he will be working on here, making <strong>ATD</strong> more Facebook-worthy, Twittified and YouTubed within an inch of our lives.</p>
<p>Drake will also be working on upgrading our multimedia efforts&#8211;which is to say, figuring out a more sophisticated strategy for us than BoomTown&#8217;s Flip video camera assaults, helping mesh up business development efforts with our editorial integrity, analyzing our analytics and even making sure our new interns are up to snuff.</p>
<p>And, for his next trick, he will also be doing posts on interesting early start-ups and emerging ideas, much in the same way he did a bang-up job with a feature called &#8220;Almost Famous&#8221; when he was an intern.</p>
<p><em>Whew!</em> Then again, he is young!</p>
<p>Still, Drake has done a lot so far.</p>
<p>After receiving his masters degree from Stanford University&#8217;s graduate program in journalism this year, and spending time in the school’s design program (the d.school), Drake moved to Brooklyn to work for the Times.</p>
<p>In addition to his weekly start-up column for <strong>ATD</strong>, his written, photographic and video work has appeared in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the San Francisco Chronicle and numerous Web sites and blogs.</p>
<p>A native of San Diego, Drake first moved to Northern California to attend the University of California at Davis. He has lived in the greater Bay Area for the last eight years, excepting short stays in Louisiana, Washington D.C., New York and Chile.</p>
<p>When not working on a story or doing a little Web development, Drake can be found at his workbench building all manner of things physical and electronic, like the solar-powered Timbuk2 backpack that accompanies him almost everywhere.</p>
<p>He also loves to twist through the Peninsula hills on his classic Triumph motorcycle. (And, now that he is our employee again, perhaps we&#8217;ll make him do it with Scoble in tow.)</p>

<p>As BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-yahoo-courts-former-news-corp-digital-exec-ross-levinsohn-as-u-s-head/">reported yesterday as likely</a>, Yahoo has finally hired former News Corp. digital exec Ross Levinsohn.</p>
<p>He replaces Hilary Schneider as EVP of the Americas region, the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s most critical unit.</p>
<p>That means Levinsohn will be in charge of both Yahoo&#8217;s powerful media properties and also its massive advertising business.</p>
<p>Levinsohn will report directly to CEO Carol Bartz, but will not be primarily located at its Sunnyvale HQ. Instead, he will remain in Los Angeles and work out of the company&#8217;s offices in Santa Monica.</p>
<p>One bright note: Bartz has finally hired an exec on her own whose prime expertise is in digital media and not related to enterprise and software.</p>
<p>Giant sigh of relief from <strong>ATD</strong> HQ, since Levinsohn actually realizes that things need to move a lot faster inside the giant bubble of Yahoo.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101027/like-boomtown-said-levinsohn-not-signed-yet-but-poised-to-be-yahoos-u-s-head/">hiring had a few snafus</a>. Levinsohn&#8217;s plane to Silicon Valley from his home base in the southland was delayed and he could not sign his contract until just now.</p>
<p>In addition, there had been a number of outstanding negotiating issues that were just resolved earlier this afternoon.</p>
<p>Thus, Levinsohn just signed moments ago and here is the official press release from Yahoo:</p>

<p>Levinsohn has long been on the forefront of digital media innovation. Levinsohn previously served as the president of News Corporation&#8217;s Fox Interactive Media, where he was responsible for running the day-to-day business, designing the overall strategy and leading investments that helped transform the company into a leader in digital media.</p>
<p>Levinsohn also held senior management positions with AltaVista, an early pioneer and leader in search, CBS Sportsline where he oversaw all content and development for the top rated sports site, and HBO where he launched and oversaw a unit developing new programming and revenue streams.</p>

<p>But only very recently: Greenberg started at Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) publishing unit at the end of February, and resigned yesterday to become CEO at College Humor Media. Prior to Time Inc., he put in time at TV Guide.com, MediaNet and MTV.</p>
<p>Greenberg&#8217;s new job is a newly created position, which puts him in charge of the main College Humor site as well as satellites like <a href="http://www.sportspickle.com/">SportsPickle</a> and <a href="http://www.dorkly.com/">Dorkly</a> (that was fun to type!).</p>
<p>College Humor co-founder Josh Abramson will stay in his current position as president; co-founder Ricky Van Veen remains occupied with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090909/college-humor-dudes-grow-up-move-in-to-dads-house/">TV projects at IAC&#8217;s Notional</a>. But he had time to send me a note about the new hire:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I couldn&#8217;t be more thrilled. We knew instantly upon meeting him that Paul was the right person for the job. Plus, to me the choice was pretty obvious &#8212; who wouldn&#8217;t want to trade up from a goofy little startup like Time Inc to a more established and venerable institution like CollegeHumor?</p></blockquote>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked Time Inc. if they have a replacement lined up for Greenberg; I&#8217;ll update if I hear back.</p>

<p>While it seems BoomTown is all about the who&#8217;s-leaving-Yahoo-<em>now</em> posts, it&#8217;s not so!</p>
<p>Case in point: Here are two folks the Silicon Valley Internet giant has just hired.</p>
<p>First, as <a href="http://ycorpblog.com/2010/09/14/newestyahoos/">announced in its Yodel Anecdotal blog</a> yesterday, David Rice will join Yahoo (YHOO) as VP of Product for Media.</p>
<p>That means he will be managing the &#8220;strategy and execution for our News, Sports, Finance, Entertainment, Lifestyles, and Games product teams.&#8221;</p>
<p>Rice is from online video company Metacafe, where he was COO. He is also an ex-Yahoo, who worked as part of its international product team from 2005 to 2007.</p>
<p>Next is James Wildman, who will become managing director and VP of sales for Yahoo&#8217;s U.K. and Ireland unit.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll start in January, after departing his job as managing director of Virgin Media&#8217;s ids advertising and media company.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/111409ATDyoutube.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-14078" title="111409ATDyoutube" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/111409ATDyoutube-250x140.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="140" /></a>Former Google sales boss Tim Armstrong has brought a slew of former colleagues with him to AOL, but this may be his highest-profile hire so far: Dave Eun, who has been in charge of content deals at Google and YouTube, will replace Bill Wilson, one of the last high-profile AOL guys from the pre-Armstrong era.</p>
<p>The deal to bring Eun on board was finalized last night, Armstrong told employees in an all-hands email (see below). It&#8217;s not a huge shock to see him leave&#8211;he&#8217;s done a lot of heavy lifting there already, and sources say that like many Google (GOOG) executives who have left recently, Eun felt he couldn&#8217;t move much higher in the company.</p>
<p>Eun used to have a role that paralleled Armstrong&#8217;s at Google: Make peace with traditional content companies. But instead of trying to sell them ads or negotiate search deals, Eun was supposed to hammer out deals to help get their content onto Google. Most recently, he was focused on getting TV networks and movie studios to put stuff on YouTube, which involved new ad-supported deals (see: Turner, ESPN, etc.) as well as the possibility of renting clips by the stream.</p>
<p>Wilson is a longtime AOL  (AOL) guy who rose up the ranks and was pushing for the original content strategy that Armstrong embraced even before the last regime change. He seems to be leaving on better terms than other pre-Armstrong executives, as he&#8217;ll be staying with the company until May to manage the transition.</p>
<p>By leaving just as AOL has spun off on its own, Wilson is giving up a chance at some significant upside via low-priced stock options. But sources say Wilson doesn&#8217;t have another job lined up.</p>
<p>In an interview this afternoon, Armstrong says that Wilson approached him about leaving the company &#8220;several weeks ago&#8221;. When I asked him if Eun&#8217;s last role&#8211;developing partnerships with big media outlets&#8211;signaled a shift in AOL&#8217;s &#8220;roll your own&#8211;cheaply&#8221; strategy, he made a point of saying that&#8217;s not the case. Eun&#8217;s hire will simply &#8220;supercharge&#8221; AOL content plans, he said.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Armstrong did allow that AOL has some significant content partnerships to announce in the coming months.</p>

<p>And here&#8217;s Armstrong&#8217;s note to the troops:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>As you know, content is at the core of our strategy and we have broad aspirations in this space. We’re focused on scaling our content platforms, production and partnerships to offer quality, original content that will engage consumers and bring them&#8211;and their friends&#8211;back to our properties time and again.</p>
<p>The fact that we have such a strong foundation in the content space is due to the determination and dedication of Bill Wilson. He saw the opportunity presented by audience fragmentation on the Web and positioned AOL’s content offerings in a number of key verticals. Early in the new year, Bill told me that although he remains committed to the vision and strategy of AOL, he’s ready for a break.</p>
<p>After nine years with the company and after the significant changes we made this year moving from licensing content to becoming a principle in content, he wants to take a step back. Bill built a strong management team and laid the groundwork for the content strategy that we’re now pursuing. While I’m disappointed by his decision, I respect his intent and have asked him to work with me, not only to find his replacement but also to transition with that person to ensure that, as a company, we don’t miss a beat on the execution of our content strategy.</p>
<p>Bill is a talented executive and great person, and I’ll be working with him closely and supporting his transition. Bill cares about AOL, he cares about the content and the products, and he has worked incredibly hard to keep AOL on the media map.</p>
<p>I’m pleased to announce that David Eun will be coming on board in March to head up our content business.  Some of you may remember David from his tenure at Time Warner where he helped to oversee AOL as Vice President, Operations, for the Media &amp; Communications Group reporting to Don Logan.</p>
<p>David, who joins us now from YouTube and Google, has had a long career in offline and online content and is the person responsible for managing Google and YouTube’s content partnerships. David brings an impressive breadth of media experience to AOL at an exciting juncture as AOL forges a new future as a high-scale producer and partner in the content space. He will be based in New York.</p>
<p>Bill will be staying on until May 1 to help ensure a smooth transition with David, who begins work March 1.</p>
<p>You may wonder why this topic wasn’t raised during yesterday’s Q4 employee call. My preference is always to share this type of news with you in person, but the facts are that there were elements of this announcement that were not finalized until last night. This drove us to announce this news this morning&#8211;to our employees first.</p>
<p>As we have discussed, AOL is now in a phase of transition from playing defense to playing offense. As I said on the employee earnings call yesterday, AOL&#8217;s back in the game and we&#8217;re playing to win. We have a lot of work to do, but we&#8217;re going to do it. <p>AOL is one of the largest producers of original content on the Web, with more than 80 official AOL and custom-built sites including more than 20 which rank in the top five in their U.S. comScore Media Metrix category. Approximately 80 percent of AOL’s content is originally produced by a growing team of staff and freelance journalists, including nine Pulitzer Prize Winners. AOL also produces more than 50 original video productions a month at state-of-the-art studios in New York and Los Angeles as well as through a network of freelance video producers.</p>
<p>SEED.com, AOL’s premium content management system, assigns, buys and distributes work for all of AOL’s properties.  StudioNow, which AOL acquired in January, allows the company to integrate a fully functional video creation platform into SEED and leverage a national network of creative professionals to develop and produce quality video in a way that is rapid, efficient and scalable.</p>
<p>Before joining Time Warner, Eun was a partner at Arts Alliance, a venture capital firm focusing on digital media, information technology and business services. He started his career in media at NBC, where he led some of NBC&#8217;s first cross-media initiatives involving television programming, the Internet, and retail consumer products. He is a former management consultant with Bain &amp; Co., and attended Harvard Law School and Harvard College, where he graduated magna cum laude in government.</p></blockquote>

<p>From the Strib&#8217;s posting on <a href="http://www.journalismjobs.com/Job_Listing.cfm?JobID=1068264">Journalism Jobs</a> (via <a href="http://www.minnpost.com/braublog/2009/07/07/10094/star_tribune_makes_it_clear_new_politics_reporter_must_know_how_to_tweet#94-10094">Minnpost</a>): &#8220;Enthusiasm for communicating political news on many different platforms&#8211;from print to online to mobile to social networking media&#8211;is essential.&#8221;</p>
<p>First: Good to know that even <a href="http://www.startribune.com/business/48570942.html">bankrupt</a> papers are still hiring. That&#8217;s my good news tidbit for the day.</p>
<p>Second: The social-networking part may sound like a novelty, but I think in the not-too-distant future, this is simply going to be a core requirement for any reporting job, like having a driver&#8217;s license.</p>

<p>Apple (AAPL) won’t say what it is exactly that Drebin’s going to work on, though it’s a safe bet it&#8217;s related to the multicore graphics processors in which he has his expertise. After all, Drebin’s the guy that, <a href="http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/AboutAMD/0,,51_52_570_15087,00.html">according to his AMD bio</a>, &#8220;led the architecture and design of many of ATI award-winning graphics processors” and “was responsible for the design of the graphics chip used in Nintendo&#8217;s GameCube console.” That’s quite a CV and one that suggests he’ll jibe well with the rock-star chip design team Apple brought in-house with its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080423/apple-pasemi/">April 2008 acquisition of boutique semiconductor design company, P.A. Semi</a>.</p>
<p>What that team is working on, of course, is anyone’s guess. Perhaps something to power that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090311/apple-netbook-actually-an-e-book/">high-definition,  touchscreen e-book reader it’s rumored to be building</a>&#8230;</p>
