Howcast Co-Founder Jumps to Daily Beast

Daniel Blackman, a Google vet who co-founded how-to video startup Howcast four years ago, has left the company and is now chief digital officer at Newsweek/Daily Beast Co., the print/Web mashup now run by Tina Brown. Blackman sent out a group e-mail announcing the change this morning; I’ve asked him and Howcast co-founder Jason Liebman for comment.

YouTube Dips Its Toe into Live Streaming

Google’s YouTube is starting its long-awaited move into live video streaming this morning with a limited test of its new platform: Two days of scheduled live programs from four partner channels–Howcast, Next New Networks, Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. The results of the test will help determine when the live-streaming capability will be rolled out to additional partners. Watching closely will be current players in the space, including Livestream and Ustream.

Start-up Hires CBS, Google Veteran

Patrick Keane, a digital-media veteran, was named the chief executive of Associated Content Inc., a start-up that syndicates user-submitted articles and video on the Web. Mr. Keane, 38, was most recently chief marketing officer of CBS Corp.’s CBS Interactive, a role he had been transitioning out of since earlier this year. Prior to that, he was a sales-strategy executive at Google Inc. who spearheaded the company’s planning with large advertisers and agencies.

How to Use Facebook for Something Besides Hooking Up and Throwing Sheep

Some of us cynical types used to wonder if Facebook would ever amount to anything beyond a place to throw sheep at your friends. Silly us! While we were really talking about Facebook’s ability to generate revenue, and eventually a profit, Facebook’s users have had more ambitious goals: Changing the world. That, at least, is the theme of the grandly named “Alliance of Youth Movements Summit,” which kicks off today at Columbia Law School.
