			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Lots of folks carry a smartphone, and, at least some of the time, tote a second mobile device—an iPad or other tablet. But some people might prefer a product that combines the two. Similarly, many have come to love the finger-controlled interface popularized by Apple, but might prefer at times to use a stylus, a common tool in the pre-iPhone days.</p>

<p>Samsung is hoping to offer all of the above. On Sunday, it&#8217;s introducing to the U.S. a phone-tablet hybrid with a large 5.3-inch screen that uses a stylus as well as your fingers. It&#8217;s called the Galaxy Note and costs $300 with a two-year AT&amp;T contract. </p>
<p>While the Note could be mistaken for a small tablet, Samsung insists it&#8217;s a phone that merely offers some of the roominess of a tablet. And in fact, it runs the last purely phone-oriented version of Google&#8217;s Android operating system, called Gingerbread. This product positioning may be due to bad memories of another company&#8217;s effort to sell such a &rsquo;tweener: Dell&#8217;s 5-inch Streak, which was marketed as a tablet that could make calls and failed miserably in 2010.</p>
<p>After testing the Galaxy Note, I have decidedly mixed feelings about it. It isn&#8217;t a very practical phone and, as a tablet, it can&#8217;t match the experience of the iPad, which is more spacious and has over 150,000 apps designed for it. However, I can see where some folks might consider the 5-inch screen a good trade-off for much better portability than other tablets, and Samsung has done some very interesting work in making the stylus, which is stored in a slot on the device, useful.</p>

<p>As a mobile phone, the Galaxy Note is positively gargantuan. It&#8217;s almost 6 inches long and over 3 inches wide. When you hold it up to your ear, it pretty much covers the entire side of your face. You look like you&#8217;re talking into a piece of toast. </p>
<p>The Note is so big, an iPhone can almost fit within its display. And it dwarfs even the more-bloated crop of recent Android phones, like Samsung&#8217;s own Galaxy S II series, whose screen can be as large as 4.5 inches. And while it can fit into a large pocket or handbag, the Note isn&#8217;t going to slip unobtrusively into your jeans or a small purse. It weighs 6.28 ounces, nearly 30 percent more than the iPhone and nearly 50 percent more than some Galaxy S II models.</p>
<p>For people who use Bluetooth earpieces all the time, or who primarily use the speakerphone function, the Note&#8217;s size may not be a problem. But for the rest, the Note is just too large to go without a more reasonably sized phone, which defeats the one-device argument.</p>
<p>Voice quality in normal use was good. But, in my limited tests of its Bluetooth voice capabilities, the caller on the other end felt the Note sounded significantly worse than the iPhone or other Android models I&#8217;ve tested.</p>
<p>However, as a data device, I liked the Note a lot. Its screen sports a high resolution that made photos, videos and text look very good. It uses AT&amp;T&#8217;s high-speed LTE data network, where available, and in my tests it was very fast. The larger screen enabled more of a Web page to be visible without scrolling than on typical phones. </p>
<p>Like all Android devices, it has fewer, and, in my opinion, generally lower-quality third-party apps than the iPhone. But those I tried worked well. The Note was consistently speedy and responsive.</p>
<p>The 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front camera both did a good job. Photos and videos I shot from the rear camera were excellent. But I found the sheer size of the Note undercuts its convenience as a camera and there&#8217;s no dedicated camera button or quick way to launch the camera when the screen is locked, as there is on some other phones.</p>
<p>In moderate mixed use, where I played music and videos, surfed the Web, texted, used email constantly and took pictures, the Note&#8217;s battery lasted more than a full day between charges.</p>
<p>Unlike Apple, Samsung allowed AT&amp;T to load a bunch of its own apps you might not want on the Note, like a $10 to $15 a month program for locating family members via cellphone GPS. A particularly egregious example is a Yellow Pages app that&#8217;s jammed into the very top of your contact list.</p>
<p>Another drawback: While other Android phones I&#8217;ve tested can be plugged into either a PC or a Mac so you can manually transfer files onto them, I couldn&#8217;t get the Note to do this with either of two Macs I tested with it. It did work with Windows machines.</p>
<p>The stylus is a big plus, at least for users who like to jot down notes, create sketches or annotate documents in a way that&#8217;s much more precise than using a fingertip. Even on the iPad, which wasn&#8217;t designed for a stylus, third-party styli have become quietly popular, but Samsung has taken the idea much further. </p>
<p>The Note&#8217;s stylus, called the S Pen, can be used instead of a finger to launch and operate apps. But that isn&#8217;t its main purpose. It&#8217;s meant to work closely with a special app called S Memo that allows you to take notes or make sketches. These can be saved or shared via email or text messaging, or uploaded to sites like Facebook. They can include photos or typed text.</p>
<p>The software allows the stylus to draw in different colors and widths and to emulate a brush or marker. </p>
<p>A button on the side of the stylus can be pressed while tapping the stylus on the screen to bring up a light version of S Memo for quick notes, or to capture whatever is on the screen as a photo that you can annotate with the pen and send off to others.</p>
<p>Samsung plans more pen-oriented apps, and there are some games and drawing apps for the stylus. Some similar apps are available for the iPad and iPhone, but Samsung is investing more in the stylus and what it can do. For people who like jotting notes or sketching, the stylus alone could be a reason to buy the Note.</p>
<p>The Samsung Galaxy Note isn&#8217;t for everyone, and I can&#8217;t recommend it as the main mobile phone for most people. But as a stylus-driven small tablet, it might be just what some users are looking for.</p>

<p>San Francisco-based <a href="http://www.ridemission.com/" target="_blank">Mission Motors</a> holds a land speed record for an electric motorcycle and, as of this week, also holds a $9.3 million Series B round of funding to commercialize that bike &#8212; or at least parts of it. </p>
<p>Sadly, CEO Jit Bhattacharya informed me his company won&#8217;t be using the cash to make more of its achingly fast electric motorcycles. </p>
<p>But, even if the bike remains a rarity, the funding is real enough. </p>
<p>The round, led by Warburg Pincus, also includes a hefty line of credit to the company &#8212; a provision that makes sense when you realize how capital intensive the real next step will be.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Mission Motors is moving to become a supplier of electrical drive systems to vehicle makers &#8212; &#8220;OEMs&#8221; in industry speak. </p>
<p>Specifically, it is &#8220;looking at [applications] where size and weight are a factor,&#8221; said Bhattacharya.</p>

<p>So what does that mean exactly?</p>
<p>An electric drive system, at its most basic, is made up of three components: Batteries to store power, a motor to convert the electricity to physical motion and a speed controller that governs how fast it all happens. </p>
<p>Mission Motors isn&#8217;t doing game-changing battery research. Nor is it inventing a fundamentally new kind of motor. </p>
<p>In essence, Mission&#8217;s team is not unlike an uber-geeky group of high school car nuts &#8212; spending time and money trying to squeeze a little more performance out of a bunch of off-the-shelf parts. </p>

<p>This game of inches gets especially important when you are trying to shoehorn an electric drive system into tiny places.  </p>
<p>Bhattacharya mentioned applications like small hybrids, where designers must fit an internal combustion engine, an electric motor and a battery package in the same car.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you drop the weight of the components, you basically improve the range,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>So, where will we see a Mission Motors power system next? </p>
<p>Bhattacharya wouldn&#8217;t say, although the company has already worked with Honda on prototype cars.</p>
<p>All I could get from the CEO, after much badgering, was, &#8220;Our focus is on building compact systems that could go into all kinds of applications.&#8221; </p>
<p>In any case, I stopped by Mission Motors&#8217; new office in SOMA to see if I could ride its record-setting, electric pavement monster and at least I got a video:</p>

Once again, digital cameras are rocketing to the top of wish lists, and once again, shoppers are tentatively entering electronics stores with bewildered looks on their faces. </p>

<p>To alleviate some of that shopping stress, I&#8217;ve compiled a buyer&#8217;s guide for different camera categories with prices and pointers to innovation. This year, manufacturers have improved photo-location tagging and are offering artistic photo alteration and clever ways to label images for future sharing on social networks. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Let&#8217;s Get Physical</h5>
<p>Consumers are starting to understand that better sensors make it possible to do things like taking photos in low light, which can really make a difference in photo quality. Some high-quality sensors are making their way into affordable models, like the CMOS sensor in Nikon&#8217;s $300 Coolpix S8100. High megapixel counts aren&#8217;t overly important, though more megapixels per photo still make it easier to zoom in while editing and give higher resolution in a larger photo or poster. A 14-megapixel camera like the Olympus FE-47 costs just $100, but a recent Consumer Reports review gave it low marks in handling shake and liquid-crystal-display screen quality. Optical zoom, or the physically manipulated distance between the camera and a subject, is still more important than digital zoom, and it&#8217;s easy to find many models with 7x optical zoom or better. LCD screens on digicams are so large that they leave little room for optical viewfinders, thus making built-in image stabilization all the more important. Image stabilization comes on nearly all new cameras. And more digicams than ever are capable of recording high-definition videos. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Breaking It Down</h5>
<p>Digital cameras can be divided into four broad categories: pocket-size, point-and-shoot, super- or mega-zooms and digital single-lens reflexes (D-SLRs). I&#8217;ll leave SLRs out of the discussion,  since they&#8217;re still primarily aimed at hobbyists who don&#8217;t mind the cost and effort of buying additional lenses, filters, flashes and other accessories. </p>

<p>Most pocket-size digital cameras cost between $100 and $300, weigh no more than seven ounces and lack optical viewfinders, forcing users to look at LCD screens to compose pictures. Most of these LCD viewing screens measure between 2.6 inches and 3.5 inches diagonally. Samsung, however, has an even bigger touch-screen LCD, at 3.7 inches, on its CL80 camera priced at $350. </p>
<p>These small but powerful machines capture images with 10, 12 or 14 megapixels and their optical zoom lenses usually range from 3x to 7x, though a handful of manufacturers are boosting their cameras&#8217; optical zooms. The $170 Casio Exilim EX-H5, for example, is equipped with a 10x optical zoom lens.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s point-and-shoot digital cameras are sleeker and more stylish than they used to be, though they remain somewhat bulkier than their pocket-size relatives. The point-and-shoot size can allow for better optical zoom lenses, and these models sometimes cost less than the pocket sizes. The $300 Canon PowerShot SX210 IS and $280 Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 are equipped with 14x and 12x optical zoom lenses, respectively. </p>

<p>Super-zoom or mega-zoom digital cameras satisfy people who want the power of a great zoom and optional manual settings without the hassle and expense of an SLR. At a glance, you might mistake these models for SLRs due to their bulkier bodies, and, in some cases, detachable (or hot-shoe) flashes. Nikon&#8217;s $400 Coolpix P100 offers a 26x wide-angle optical zoom, and Olympus&#8217;s $350 SP-800UZ is the smallest camera with a 30x wide-angle optical zoom. Both cameras have built-in flashes, but the Nikon includes an optical viewfinder while the Olympus offers only an LCD screen for viewing and capturing photos.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Shaking It Up</h5>
<p>Camera manufacturers are adding creative new features to these devices. Starting the week of Thanksgiving, Casio will provide Hybrid GPS on its $350 EX-H20G, which geotags (adds digital location information to) images indoors where GPS satellite signals can&#8217;t reach. This works using a combined GPS radio and motion sensor to measure the direction in which the camera has moved, and how fast. When you&#8217;re back in satellite range, the camera corrects the geotag by cross-referencing its own estimates with satellite-provided latitude and longitude. </p>
<p>Olympus now has art filters, which let you view your subject with special effects before capturing the photo. Some filters supply gentle sepia, soft focus or grainy film. There is also a drawing filter, which makes a subject instantly appear as a sketch. </p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s $150 PL90 model has a pop-out USB arm that reminds me a lot of the pop-out USB connector on Cisco&#8217;s popular Flip camcorders. Samsung&#8217;s USB arm eliminates the need for messy wires, or the removal of a memory card to transfer photos from a digicam to a PC. </p>

<p>Many cameras have and continue to supply guides that appear on screen as a photo is being captured. Sony&#8217;s NEX-5 offers this, and the Olympus Live Guide let you preview photo adjustments—like brightness or color saturation—on the screen as you make them. Nikon&#8217;s Scene Auto Selector, found in the Coolpix P7000, Coolpix S8100 and Coolpix S80, will automatically adjust the camera&#8217;s settings so users can stop worrying about scrolling through menus to select the right scene from a list. </p>
<p>Fujifilm offers the only true (not simulated) three-dimensional digital camera in its $500 FinePix REAL 3D W3, which I reviewed in August. These 3D images can be seen through the camera&#8217;s LCD viewing screen but not on laptops or television sets unless they&#8217;re 3D-capable and you&#8217;re wearing 3D glasses.</p>
<p>Kodak is trying to encourage sharing with its cameras by including a Share button that, when pressed, digitally tags images and videos with labels for Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Kodak Gallery or email, then automatically sends the photos to those places when you next plug the camera into a PC.</p>
<p>One last warning: Don&#8217;t be seduced by lower prices or better technology alone. Be sure you try a camera in the store before buying it. The way it feels or works for you is just as important as any technological specification.</p>

But you&#8217;ll still have to juggle a lot of technobabble terminology and watch your budget. Perhaps the biggest question for some buyers will be whether to get a tablet or a laptop, now that Apple&#8217;s iPad is a proven hit and a flood of competitors is on the way.</p>

<p>So, here is my annual fall computer buyers&#8217; guide, a simplified road map to the key decisions shoppers must make. I&#8217;ve focused on laptops—the most common purchase—but much of this advice also applies to desktops. As always, these tips are for average users doing the most common tasks. This advice doesn&#8217;t apply to businesses, to hard-core gamers, or to serious media producers.</p>
<p><strong>Tablets vs. Laptops</strong>: If you&#8217;re looking for a light-duty, highly portable computer, it&#8217;s worth considering the iPad, which starts at $499, instead of a small laptop. This is especially true if you&#8217;re in the market for a secondary computer, or one mainly for use on the go. Many owners of iPads, including me, are finding it handily replaces a laptop for numerous tasks, such as Web browsing, email, social-networking, photos, video and music. It has superior battery life, lighter weight, and it starts instantly. I don&#8217;t recommend it for people who are creating long documents, especially spreadsheets and presentations, even though it is capable of those tasks. And I don&#8217;t recommend it for users who require, or prefer, a physical keyboard.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t like the iPad, there will soon be alternatives. For instance, Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Tab, which has a 7-inch screen versus the iPad&#8217;s 10-inch display, and runs Google&#8217;s Android operating system, will be available this month from major wireless carriers. Sprint, for example, will offer it at $400 with a two-year contract. But some tablet buyers may want to wait till the first half of next year, when many more models will be available, and Apple will likely roll out the second-generation iPad.</p>
<p><strong>Netbooks</strong>: These low-cost, low-powered little Windows computers are losing popularity, but are still available, typically for about $350 to $500. They are being hurt by the rise of tablets and by light but larger laptops. Some buyers also find the screens and keyboards are too cramped. But these are evolving. Some now have bigger screens and roomier keyboards. And Dell will soon introduce a sort of hybrid netbook-tablet. Called the Inspiron Duo, this model, starting at $499, has both a regular keyboard and a touch screen that flips around when the lid is closed to act like a tablet.</p>
<p><strong>Windows vs. Mac</strong>: Windows laptops can be much less costly—and come in many more styles and varieties—than Mac laptops. The Macs start at $999, versus as little as $500 for a decently equipped Windows portable. Windows laptops are still dominant. But Apple laptops are stylish and reliable, and usually boot much faster than Windows machines, in my tests. Also, Apple scores high on surveys of customer support. Its latest models, like the new, light MacBook Airs, have extraordinarily good battery life. Macs also aren&#8217;t affected by the vast majority of malicious software, have much better built-in multimedia software and, at extra cost, can run Windows programs in cases where Mac equivalents aren&#8217;t available.</p>

<p><strong>Cost</strong>: Most of the popular consumer Windows laptops cost $500 to $800. You can get full-size laptops for as little as $280, but their processors and graphics are weak and some lack webcams. If you can afford it, a light but speedy 13-inch machine like the Toshiba R705 offers very good battery life for just under $800. All-in-one desktops typically cost around $1,000 and some, like the HP TouchSmart, offer touch screens with special touch software. Apple&#8217;s popular all-in-one iMac starts at $1,199. </p>
<p><strong>Processors</strong>: The most promoted chips are Intel&#8217;s i3, i5, and i7 Core models, the latter two of which can turn on and off some of their functions to boost power or save energy. But there is nothing wrong with buying a PC that uses chips from rival AMD, which usually cost less. For average users, Intel&#8217;s older Core 2 Duo still works just fine, even with the latest software. Intel&#8217;s weaker Atom processor line powers most netbooks.</p>
<p><strong>Graphics</strong>: Integrated graphics, which share the computer&#8217;s main memory, are fine for most common tasks, but costlier discrete graphics, which have dedicated memory, can speed things up by taking some of the load off the main processor. They also are better for games. Some computers have both and can switch among them.</p>
<p><strong>Wireless</strong>: More and more laptops are coming with optional cellular modem chips in addition to Wi-Fi. These can be handy while traveling, but be warned that they require a cellular data contract, which can be costly.</p>
<p><strong>Connections</strong>: If you plan to connect your laptop to a TV, look for a connector called an HDMI port, which is used on most high-definition TVs. Some laptops also come with a feature called Wireless Display, or Wi-Di, which, with an extra-cost adapter, can beam your laptop screen to a TV without a cable. There is a new, much faster USB port, called USB 3.0, but, so far, it&#8217;s on very few machines.</p>
<p><strong>Memory</strong>: Aim for 4 gigabytes of memory, or RAM, on a new computer, and never settle for less than 2 gigabytes.</p>
<p><strong>Hard disks</strong>: A 320 gigabyte hard disk should be the minimum on most PCs, though 250 gigabytes is OK if price is key, or if it&#8217;s your secondary machine. Solid-state disks, which lack moving parts and use flash memory like smartphones do, are faster and use less battery power. They cost much more, but are coming down in price fast. However, they typically offer much less capacity.</p>
<p><strong>64-bit</strong>: Many models now use a 64-bit architecture, which allows properly written software to use more memory and run faster. If possible, buy 64-bit, which will become more and more important.</p>
<p><strong>Touch</strong>: Some Windows 7 computers have touch capability built into the screen, though Windows wasn&#8217;t designed with touch as a core element and the combination isn&#8217;t ideal. Computer makers try to resolve this with special touch software, which you should try in a store. Apple laptops use huge touch pads as the multitouch surface, instead of the screen. </p>
<p>As always, don&#8217;t buy more machine than you need.</p>

<p>At Walt&#8217;s request, Mulally shows off a piece of paper with handwritten notes that purport to explain Ford&#8217;s interest in all things digital. Lots of computers are involved in the creation of your Taurus.</p>
<p><strong>12:30 pm:</strong> Kara wants to know why cars have been basically digitally ignorant for a long time. Walt: You open the door to you car and it&#8217;s 1957 again. Why is that?</p>
<p>For the record, Mulally doesn&#8217;t think you should text and drive.</p>
<p>He also wants you to keep your hands on the wheels and eyes on the road. So there&#8217;s lots of digital stuff being built into dashboard and console. Like the SYNC iPod/phone, etc., manager.</p>
<p>Ford is playing around with features like allowing drivers to have their text messages read to them. But safety is paramount. All of our data says your safest operation is when you have your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. But right now, we feel that listening to email and text is a good first step. But we don&#8217;t want you sending email and text via voice, at least for now.</p>
<p><strong>12:35 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;Why is this taking so long? [i.e., "where is my jetpack?"]</p>
<p>Walt: Yeah! Even fancy German and Japanese cars don&#8217;t do it well. It&#8217;s pathetic!</p>
<p>Mulally: Don&#8217;t blame me! I just got here. Part of the problem is that car development is much slower than consumer electronics R&amp;D cycle. For instance, a lot of competitors have embedded a phone in the car. We&#8217;re avoiding that and focusing on interface, so as consumers exchange and swap devices, they can do that.</p>
<p><strong>12:38 pm:</strong> A pitch for &#8220;My Ford Touch,&#8221; which seems to have lots of bells and whistles, but sounds confusing to this frequent walker and subway-taker.</p>
<p><strong>12:39 pm:</strong> Walt tries explaining it. &#8220;The instrument cluster, which has been on steering wheels forever, is now going to be a on a screen.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mulally: Right. We want to make it intuitive. Etc.</p>
<p><strong>12:40 pm:</strong> Still trying to explain it. Screen goes on steering wheel and allows customizable controls for operating car, as well as extras.</p>
<p><strong>12:41 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;what is that people want to do, anyway?</p>
<p>Mulally: Good question. We watch what people do in cars and try to help them do it, because they&#8217;re going to do it anyway. For instance, we&#8217;re building in Pandora to our cars. You&#8217;ll get the music via the Web, from your cellphone, but you&#8217;ll operate it on our panel. Also Stitcher, Open Beak, etc.</p>
<p>A lot of people here are using apps. You&#8217;ll get to use them in the car.</p>
<p><strong>12:43 pm:</strong> Walt&#8211;Will you need a special Ford version of these apps?</p>

<p><strong>12:47 pm:</strong> Let&#8217;s talk about the car industry, period. You just got here. You were in aerospace, before. Also, the whole oil spill thing does change the way we look at cars, right?</p>
<p>Mulally: Before I left Boeing (BA), I thought about where the car industry was going. What I decided was that the industry is the soul of Manufacturing&#8211;“big M&#8221;&#8211;all around the world. Lots of stuff goes into this, no matter what country or region. It&#8217;s also part of the solution to economic growth, energy independence and environmental sustainability.</p>
<p>On that note: Clearly, the internal combustion engine is going to be around for a while. But we can make them operate more efficiently, etc. Take a v6 and make it run like a v8m, etc. Meanwhile hybrids are tough because you have two  different systems: Batteries and internal combustion. Then in the future, we need to move to all-electric. We have a great road map for all of this. First all-electric cars launch this year. Hydrogen is farther out, don&#8217;t have the tech for it yet.</p>
<p><strong>12:52 pm:</strong> Mulally describes challenges of electric car&#8211;need to figure out how and where to get the juice to cars.</p>
<p><strong>12:53 pm:</strong> Kara&#8211;What about health of business?</p>
<p>Mulally: I like being here much better than testifying in front of Congress.</p>
<p>Kara: How did you get here?</p>
<p>Mulally: I flew! That&#8217;s why we have airplanes. For long-distance travel.</p>
<p><strong>12:53 pm:</strong> A Zuckerberg hoodie joke.</p>
<p><strong>12:54 pm:</strong> Mulally&#8211;Time goes fast. Last year, I was testifying on behalf my competitors, who were bankrupt. Now I&#8217;m a capitalist. But if GM and Chrysler went away, they&#8217;d take the supply base along with them, and they&#8217;d probably have put the U.S. into a bona fide depression.</p>
<p>I was asking for temporary help. I didn&#8217;t think all of us would end up owning our competitors.</p>
<p><strong>12:57 pm:</strong> Mulally&#8211;Recovery is coming, by the way. We&#8217;ll have 3.5 percent expansion of GDP this year. And Ford is doing well. We&#8217;ll have market-share increases.</p>
<p>Kara: What kind of car do you drive?</p>
<p>Mulally: A different one every night.</p>

<p>[I hope someone asks about the New York Times series that said that anything you do in your car besides driving is a safety risk. Anyone?]</p>
<p><strong>Q: Please talk about the Mercury situation.</strong></p>
<p>A: We had too many brands. Ford, Mercury and Lincoln. Mercury was supposed to be a gap-bridger between Ford and Lincoln. But the Ford line expanded, so we didn&#8217;t need Mercury. &#8220;Everybody&#8217;s got great options in Ford.&#8221; It&#8217;s also good news for Lincoln&#8211;because we don&#8217;t have other premium brands anymore, we&#8217;ll refocus on Lincoln for luxury.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Proud Tesla owner Jason Calacanis wants to know why electric isn&#8217;t everywhere already.</strong></p>
<p>A: We can make electric cars, but as you know, we can improve them, like battery life.</p>
<p>Calacanis: No. It&#8217;s not a problem. Batteries are great at Tesla.</p>
<p>Mulally: Nope. Most of them are too big, too heavy. There&#8217;s a lot of room to improve the batteries.</p>
<p>Other point is that the infrastructure has to get there. You need charging stations for people in apartments, in rural areas, etc. When we get there, Ford will be there.</p>
<p>Kara, and Walt want Jason to tell us how much his Tesla cost. Astonishingly, he goes mute.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Did you really say you don&#8217;t intend to get a revenue stream from connectivity of cars to data? You don&#8217;t want a piece of money made by Yelp, Garmin, etc.? </strong></p>
<p>A: You heard me correctly. We&#8217;re laser-focused on safe and efficient transportation. So there&#8217;s no conflict of interest.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Walt wants to if these electronics actually sell cars.</strong></p>
<p>A: I demoed this stuff for you, and you&#8217;re a tough critic, and you said &#8220;whoa!&#8221; This technology is absolutely a differentiator.</p>
<p><strong>Q: You&#8217;re talking about innovation in cars. Does dealer network have to change too?</strong></p>
<p>A: Absolutely. We&#8217;ve been right-sizing the dealer network to match demand for five years. Once you do that, throughput goes up, profitability goes up, interest in improving facilities goes up, etc. Then we can improve consumer experience.</p>
<p>Walt: Because it&#8217;s terrible right now.</p>
<p>Mulally agrees without saying so.</p>
<p><strong>Q: China is pushing hard for electric cars. What does that mean for you?</strong></p>
<p>A: I think China is going to continue to take a real leadership position on this. Big population, and they have a chance to really make a difference and maybe leapfrog the past.</p>
<p><strong>Q: There&#8217;s that great Ford quote about not listening to his customers, because if he did he&#8217;d be in the horse business. So how you do innovate?</strong></p>
<p>A: Stay closet to innovation. And have a point of view about how the industry is going to progress.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Ah! Someone asked about focusing while you drive.</strong></p>
<p>A: Eighty percent of accidents involve taking your eyes off the road. So we&#8217;re convinced that the mind has the cognitive ability to do other things while driving as long as you continue to watch the road. So we minimize anything that&#8217;s a distraction: Keyboard, certain confusing apps, etc. We are definitely going to be a gatekeeper with regard to apps, because it&#8217;s crucial that you not be distracted.</p>

<p>If Disney EVP Kevin Mayer knows, he&#8217;s not telling. But for the record, he says, &#8220;no decisions have been made&#8221; about what kind of pay models and services the video site is going to use, or when they&#8217;ll roll out.</p>
<p>In short, the only concrete thing that the Disney (DIS) executive, speaking at the <a href="http://www.mediabankers.com/Event.aspx?event=82376">DeSilva+Phillips Dealmakers conference</a> this morning, would allow is that the video site will indeed be asking some consumers to pay for something at some point.</p>
<p>That could come in the form of subscriptions, a la carte downloads, streaming rentals or all of the above, Mayer said. This would be in addition to the free ad-supported stuff Hulu is already offering. &#8220;I think we ultimately should and will have a hybrid approach,&#8221; said Mayer.</p>
<p>Mayer is one of the key Disney executives who pushed the company to <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090501/why-it-took-more-than-four-months-and-millions-of-dollars-to-get-lost-on-hulu/">join News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox and GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC in the joint venture</a> last year instead of accepting a competing offer from Google (GOOG) and YouTube. YouTube, meanwhile, is still working on <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091201/is-youtube-ready-for-prime-time-google-wants-to-stream-tv-for-a-fee/">paid</a> <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100202/youtubes-trip-to-the-movies-nets-enough-for-popcorn-and-another-visit/">services</a> of its own.</p>
<p>For the record, I followed up with Mayer after his appearance this morning and asked about the status of <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091102/apples-itunes-pitch-tv-for-30-a-month/">Disney&#8217;s talks with Apple about its proposed iTunes subscription service</a>. Industry sources believe that Disney is the most likely of the big media companies to sign up with Apple  (AAPL). But Mayer, not surprisingly, declined to comment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s about the software, stupid. While all sorts of commentators were focusing on how much Apple&#8217;s new $499 iPad tablet computer looks like an oversized iPhone, the key to whether it can be the first multi-function tablet to win wide public acceptance probably lies in whether consumers perceive it as a suitable replacement for a laptop in key scenarios. And that, in my view, depends heavily on the software and services that flow through its handsome little body.</p>
<p>I have only spent a short time hands-on with the iPad&#8211;too short to fully run it through its paces and formally review it yet. But, after attending the rollout of the new device today, and trying out some of its features for myself, I have some first impressions.</p>

<p>Apple CEO Steve Jobs positioned the iPad as belonging to a new category of device between the smartphone and the laptop (since the netbook, in his view and mine, is really just a small, cheap laptop). But, as the demos unfolded, I kept thinking it was more like a hybrid of the two. </p>
<p>It uses the iPhone&#8217;s basic user interface and physical design. But, taking advantage of a 9.7&#8243; screen and a fast Apple-designed processor, the iPad adds some user interface elements and functionality that aren&#8217;t available&#8211;or at least typical&#8211;on smart phones, but look more like computer software. For instance, its photo program works more like iPhoto on a Mac than the photo app on an iPhone, and it will be available with a touch version of Apple&#8217;s iWork productivity suite, which is Apple&#8217;s take on Microsoft Office. This is a much more powerful program than the phone-based office suites for the iPhone or BlackBerry, and Apple (AAPL) is only charging $30 for it.</p>

<p>Also, Apple has rewritten most of the core iPhone apps so they look more like, and have more of the features of, Mac or PC programs. But they aren&#8217;t mere clones of full computer apps. For instance, many forego standard menus for clever overlays and sidebars that work more naturally with the iPad&#8217;s multi-touch interface. Other app developers can do this, too. But, even if they don&#8217;t, the company said the iPad will run most of the current 140,000 iPhone apps, either in a small window on the screen, or in a full-screen mode. That&#8217;s a huge plus for a new device.</p>

<p>Mr. Jobs said after the onstage program ended that he sees the iPad&#8217;s user interface as a fuller expression of the one on the iPhone, which had been limited by screen real estate.</p>
<p>And, although the reported video and music streaming services were nowhere to be seen at this preview, Mr. Jobs did offer a taste of how the iPad could deliver content, beyond simply downloads from the iTunes store. He showed off a new e-book reader app with built-in online book store that, visually at least, blew away the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle, even if it seemed to lack all of the Kindle&#8217;s features and may have a smaller catalog. Representatives of the New York Times (NYT) showed an iPad digital version of their newspaper that seemed vastly more usable than the clumsy version now on the Kindle and its ilk.</p>
<p>So, the iPad is more than just a giant iPod Touch or iPhone, even though it looks like one. But the question is, will that be enough to get consumers to shell out for it, and make it part of their daily lives? Or will it be a niche product, like Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Tablet PC or Mr. Jobs&#8217; own Apple TV?</p>

<p>On the plus side, the device is handsome, feels comfortable and solid to hold, and has all that beautiful software built in. Oh, and it&#8217;s amazingly low-priced for an Apple product, with that modest $499 price tag for a base version with 16 gigabytes of memory and Wi-Fi, but no cell phone data connectivity. (A fully loaded model with 64 gigabytes, Wi-Fi and a no-contract 3G cellular data plan is $829, and there are variations in between.)</p>
<p>It also boasts a decent 10 hours of battery life, and Mr, Jobs told me after the event that, for some functions, like playing video and music, the battery should last even longer. </p>
<p>But there are minuses. First, since it&#8217;s too big to go in a pocket, people might perceive it as just another thing to carry around, despite the fact that it&#8217;s only a half inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds. It also lacks a common and popular laptop feature&#8211;a web cam. So, it can&#8217;t be used for video chats or for the creation of web videos.</p>

<p>Also, the carrier for the iPad&#8217;s 3G plan is the deeply unpopular AT&#038;T&#8211;there were groans and boos among Mr. Jobs&#8217; otherwise excited audience when this was announced. AT&#038;T is offering bargain prices for iPad data service compared to what it charges laptop owners. But its network is overwhelmed in many big cities and many iPhone lovers, who are strong candidates to buy an iPad, curse the carrier daily.</p>
<p>Finally, while it&#8217;s too early for me to say without lots of testing, the size of the iPad&#8217;s virtual keyboard may be a liability. I found it almost too wide for thumb typing, and a colleague who&#8217;s a whiz at touch typing and tried it briefly found it awkward to type on. Apple is offering an auxiliary physical keyboard that docks with, and charges, the iPad. But you won&#8217;t want to lug that around.</p>
<p>Still, the software looked impressive, and that could help Steve Jobs do the one thing even he has never done in an amazing career: get the public to love not just a better version of an existing type of gadget, but a whole new category of gadget.</p>

<p>Electronics retailers and manufacturers including Best Buy Co. (BBY), Samsung Electronics America Inc. and LG Electronics USA Inc. are selling Blu-ray disc players that tap into movies from online rental companies. The devices provide an alternative to pay-per-view cable services.</p>
<p>The hybrid movie players tap a growing library of online movies and television shows from Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), which screens movies for as little as 99 cents, and from Netflix Inc. (NFLX), which allows unlimited movie streaming for $8.99 a month.</p>

On Monday, <a href="http://www.fiskerautomotive.com/images/uploads/Fisker%20Arbitration%20Results%2011%203%2008.pdf">an arbitrator ruled that Fisker did nothing untoward</a> by introducing an  electric-powered luxury sports car after doing some design work for Tesla.</p>
<p>As you may recall, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/15/technology/15tesla.html">Tesla sued Fisker Coachbuild back in April</a>, charging that founder Henrik Fisker stole valuable company design ideas and trade secrets after it hired him to design the company&#8217;s oft-delayed plug-in electric-powered WhiteStar hybrid sedan.</p>
<p>Tesla claimed Fisker sabotaged the WhiteStar project by purposely drafting a subpar design that set it back three to six months, then<a href="http://blogs.motortrend.com/6241451/corporate/starting-a-new-car-company-check-out-tesla-v-fisker/index.html"> stole proprietary Tesla technology and used it to build a competing car&#8211;the Fisker Karma</a>. Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show this past January, the $80,000 Karma had been scheduled to arrive at market in late 2009. Because of the production delays allegedly caused by Fisker&#8217;s designs, the WhiteStar won&#8217;t arrive until 2010.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think it’s ironic that Fisker chose to name his car the Karma, when what he’s done is very bad karma,&#8221; Tesla attorney Adam C. Belsky said back in April.</p>
<p>The arbitrator, it seems, didn&#8217;t quite agree. &#8220;The evidence is overwhelming that Fisker did nothing wrong,&#8221; he found. &#8220;The assertion of violations of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act by Fisker were baseless and neither brought nor pursued in good faith.&#8221;</p>
<p>A tough break for Tesla, which has been <a href="http://valleywag.com/5071621/tesla-motors-has-9-million-in-the-bank-may-not-deliver-cars">hit hard</a> by <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081017/tesla-foiled/">the financial crisis</a>, so hard that it was forced to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUSN0331410320081103">borrow $40 million</a> to cover its costs earlier this week.</p>
