<p>A company called MuleSoft specializes in helping companies do exactly that. It started out as an on-premise platform, but has since shifted to one based in the cloud. A textbook case: Getting data from one cloud-based application &#8212; say, Salesforce.com &#8212; working with another &#8212; say, Workday. You might want information about your sales team&#8217;s performance integrated with your human-resources information so you can keep track of who&#8217;s performing well and who isn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Typically, you&#8217;d do that yourself, taking advantage of APIs provided by both companies. You&#8217;d assign a team of developers to create a custom process and workflow. It would take more time than you&#8217;d want it to, and would probably cost more than you&#8217;d like.</p>
<p>&#8220;All those problems about integrating data become exponentially greater in the cloud,&#8221; mainly because there are more applications and there&#8217;s also just more data, said MuleSoft CEO Greg Schott. There are, he said, something like 2,100 different companies offering software-as-a-service applications, plus a whole bunch of older legacy on-premise enterprise software products. And every company has its own mix-and-match combination.</p>
<p>The good news is that most, if not all, of these applications have their APIs, meaning that, in theory, a programmer can take advantage of them. And that&#8217;s where MuleSoft steps in. One API doesn&#8217;t natively talk to another API. At a high level, MuleSoft sits as the middleman between them all. It has a repository of 13,000 or more APIs, and has an SaaS platform that connects them all together. The time required to integrate data in two or more applications is cut from weeks or months to hours or days.</p>
<p>The problem isn&#8217;t getting smaller. The number of open APIs available is multiplying, and in a few more years will reach into the hundreds of thousands.</p>
<p>Founded in 2003, its timing couldn&#8217;t have been better. Companies like Salesforce, NetSuite, Workday, SuccessFactors and others all sought to shift important business applications out of the office and into the cloud. And now running things in the cloud is more often than not preferred, because in the long run it&#8217;s cheaper &#8212; cloud companies tend to charge on a subscription basis &#8212; and easier.</p>
<p>So MuleSoft has been on fire. Its customers run the gamut from banks to automakers to media companies: Barclays, J.P. Morgan and Wells Fargo are all customers, as are BMW and Tesla. Facebook and Box and Intuit are customers, too. More than 150,000 developers at more than 3,200 companies are using MuleSoft&#8217;s platform.</p>
<p>Today, the company announced that it has raised $37 million in a Series E round of venture capital funding, led by NEA. Salesforce.com is also investing in this round. Prior investors participating include Hummer Winblad, Morgenthaler Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, SAP Ventures (the venture capital arm of software giant SAP) and Bay Partners. The round brings MuleSoft&#8217;s total capital raised to $81 million. An IPO is probably not far off.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s one reason for Salesforce&#8217;s interest: One of MuleSoft&#8217;s newer products is an app called <a href="https://dataloader.io/">Dataloader.io</a>, that is available on the Salesforce App Exchange. It&#8217;s designed to move data from pretty much any application into Salesforce.com. Within weeks, it shot to No. 1 on the App Exchange, and remains the most popular app there today, Schott told me. </p>
<p>Another new product was announced today. It&#8217;s called Anypoint, and it&#8217;s described as the only complete integration platform to cover applications across the entire spectrum of cloud or on-premise, and to get the data in them working together.  </p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>AllThingsD</strong> is changing its commenting system on our site to Livefyre from Disqus.</p>

<p>We did so for a lot of reasons, including being able to offer a social layer to our comments that has been dormant until now. </p>
<p>Through this new commenting system, readers can:</p>
<ul>
<li>more readily share comments to Facebook and Twitter (or choose not to)</li>
<li>follow conversations across multiple platforms</li>
<li>tag friends and draw them into the stream</li>
<li>accurately flag other comments as spam or offensive</li>
</ul>
<p>As part of the change, users will have the option to sign in to comment using their Twitter, Facebook, Google or LinkedIn credentials, or you can create a user ID specific to <strong>AllThingsD</strong>. </p>
<p>And don&#8217;t worry, the comments left on the site since it launched are being imported into this new system and should still be entirely accessible. If you don&#8217;t see posts you&#8217;ve made or comments in a thread you&#8217;ve been following, give it a little time and they will appear. In other words, no pixels were harmed in the making of this move &#8212; except the troll ones.</p>
<p>On the back end, Livefyre will be working to reduce spam before you have to see it, as well as making it easier and faster for us to moderate the comments that you want to see (and excise the ones all of us don&#8217;t).</p>
<p>Although we have done everything in our power to minimize any hiccups in the process of installing Livefyre, all changes come with bumps in the road. Ideally, you will not really notice the new interface and only see a new ease in commenting. </p>
<p>Still, we fully expect you to have an opinion about the switch, so, as always, feel free to comment. Just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120411/nice-alert-our-annual-request-for-civility-in-comments/">keep in mind</a> that, new commenting software or not, we still <a href="http://allthingsd.com/comments/">actively monitor our comment threads</a>.</p>
<p>In short:</p>

<li>While we welcome criticism as well as praise, we don&#8217;t tolerate baseless attacks.</li>

<p>Google over the past year has boosted the Google+ operation by integrating it with the company&#8217;s top-tier properties, including its Web search engine, Gmail, YouTube, business listings and the Android mobile-operating system.</p>
<p>People using Google to search for photos or customer reviews of a restaurant, for example, automatically are steered to the restaurant&#8217;s Google+ page. In the fall, Google began requiring people who want to post their reviews of restaurants or other businesses to use their Google+ profiles to do so. The same rule applies for reviews of physical goods or mobile apps obtained through Google.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the company, Yahoo is prepping to launch a major overhaul of Yahoo Mail &#8212; which sources said has a cleaner, &#8220;more Gmail-like&#8221; look.</p>
<p>I am not clear exactly what <em>that</em> means in terms of features and design. But sources said the goal of the redo &#8212; which has been initiated by new CEO Marissa Mayer, who is also pushing ahead with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121111/as-fantasy-football-servers-fumble-on-game-day-yahoo-rolls-out-more-homepage-tests-ahead-of-december-launch/">new homepage design</a> &#8212; is to better compete with the fast-growing mail offering from Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;Marissa thinks Yahoo Mail has been a big missed opportunity for the company and she wants to fix that,&#8221; said one person with knowledge of the effort, which had also been mulled by previous CEO Scott Thompson.</p>
<p>Sources said the latest iteration of Yahoo Mail will be released in early December, just after the new homepage is rolled out widely.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a lot of change at a critical money-making time for Yahoo, but Mayer &#8212; a former top Google product exec &#8212; has publicly committed the company to releasing innovative and mobile-focused products as a key differentiator. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good idea when it comes to Yahoo Mail, even though it got a major refresh just about a year ago. At the time, the first change in five years got good reviews, with a cleaner design, Twitter and Facebook integration, improved spam filters and speedier delivery.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, since then, Google&#8217;s Gmail has become the most popular email service in the world, passing Microsoft&#8217;s Hotmail (which is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120731/microsoft-tries-tries-again-to-take-on-gmail-this-time-with-outlook-com/">now called Outlook.com</a> after a recent rejiggering), according to recent stats from comScore. That has added up to Gmail&#8217;s 287.9 million monthly unique visitors worldwide, 286.2 million for Microsoft&#8217;s email product and 281.7 million for Yahoo Mail.</p>
<p>Still, in the U.S. at least, Yahoo is holding onto its longtime &#8212; though dwindling &#8212; lead, with 76.7 million using Google&#8217;s email product and 35.5 million using Microsoft&#8217;s.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an important spot to maintain for Yahoo, since many of the users of its products now come to the site to access email and it has been a key driver to its content properties. </p>
<p>But to keep mindshare, Yahoo faces increasingly strong competition. Google&#8217;s Gmail released a series of solid improvements last fall. In addition, along with the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120731/is-hotmail-hotter-now-that-its-outlook-com/">positively reviewed Microsoft Outlook.com redo</a>, AOL has just announced a new <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/APa88ee4d771a442bbb83618ad854b1078.html">email product called Alto</a>. While it is in beta to a small audience, it is aiming to help users with multiple email accounts organize them better.</p>
<p>In others words, the mail business &#8212; especially using it via smartphones and tablets &#8212; is another place Yahoo has to make sure it remains innovative.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Answering the question, "Did Forstall jump, or was he pushed?" will have to wait out the storm. (But we think pushed.)]]></description>

<p>Some news cannot wait, of course, and sources at Apple said the company had planned to release news of the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121029/breaking-scott-forstall-out-at-apple-along-with-retail-head/">sudden exit of Scott Forstall</a>, one of its major execs, this afternoon.</p>
<p>Maybe so, but it&#8217;s also unusual timing. Due to Hurricane Sandy &#8212; which was poised to hit landfall in central New Jersey just as Apple made its announcement about the iOS mobile software chief&#8217;s leaving, along with that of Apple Store retail head John Browett &#8212; Wall Street reaction to what appears to be a major management move by CEO Tim Cook will not take place until at least Wednesday.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because the massive storm has led to the closure of the stock markets today and tomorrow, leaving investors to mull on the major reorganization without a lot of ability to react.</p>
<p>Apple shares closed at $604 on Friday, up about 49 percent over the past year. Its stock had declined slightly recently, after <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121025/apple-comes-up-short-in-q4-as-profits-miss-street-expectations/">last week&#8217;s quarterly earnings did not meet the enormous profit expectations</a> of Wall Street. Still, Apple had &#8212; for anyone else &#8212; a blockbuster fourth quarter.</p>
<p>The tech leader reported $8.67 per share of profit on sales of $35.97 billion.</p>
<p>How the departure of Forstall and, to a much lesser extent, Browett (who has been a largely unpopular exec since he was hired a year ago), will be greeted by shareholders when markets open should be interesting.</p>
<p>On one hand, Forstall has been a major exec at the company for a very long time, in charge of key areas of success for Apple, including the software for its hugely popular iPhone and iPad. Forstall has even been called CEO-in-waiting in some media accounts.</p>
<p>That said, many sources report that he has wrangled with other top execs, including Cook, and he has been known as someone with a doesn&#8217;t-play-well-with-others personality. One source told me today that Forstall had made numerous &#8220;open challenges&#8221; to the Apple leader over the last year.</p>
<p>While that&#8217;s not necessarily a negative at Apple &#8212; the late CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs was also someone who did not suffer fools or even simple mistakes among trusted staff &#8212; the recent troubles as it replaced Google&#8217;s mapping software with its own had clearly tarnished Forstall&#8217;s image.</p>
<p>In addition, while Apple does great at hardware, as well hardware/software integration, it has often fallen down in other key software efforts, such as MobileMe, iTunes and more.  </p>
<p>This is not all Forstall&#8217;s fault, of course, but his sudden departure &#8212; which will take place officially next year &#8212; means that Cook is consolidating control over the top management. </p>
<p>Thus, the did-he-jump-or-was-he-pushed meme will doubtlessly increase over the next few days. Pushed seems to be the consensus so far.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s a little insight into Apple&#8217;s often opaque culture to better discern management Kremlinology there: iTunes is still advertising competitors&#8217; maps instead of its own failed product, and Forstall got no stage time at Apple iPad mini event last week.</p>
<p>Clearly, the removal of Browett, who had made a series of moves that were negatively greeted by Apple&#8217;s retail unit, will make Cook look decisive, especially since he had hired him. But whether that extends to how the influential Forstall was dispatched &#8212; and it looks like he was &#8212; will be another story to grok for Wall Street.</p>

<p>When Microsoft bought the global Internet communications company Skype for $8.5 billion eight months ago, there was some worry about it being well-integrated into the software giant.</p>
<p>But, as Tony Bates &#8212; the former Skype CEO who now runs the Microsoft division &#8212; said onstage at the 10th <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, the service now has 250 million monthly connected users, up from 170 million then.</p>
<p>Among the many topics he covered in this interview with me: Mobile efforts with Apple&#8217;s iOS and Google&#8217;s Android, prospects for video and, of course, how integration is going with Microsoft&#8217;s slew of products, such as Windows 8 and its mobile platform.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re on that journey,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You&#8217;ll have to wait and see.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yahoo has confirmed that it hired Google ad exec Michael Barrett as its new chief of revenue.</p>
<p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120618/exclusive-yahoo-hires-google-exec-barrett-as-chief-of-revenue-as-big-ad-changes-loom/">reported earlier</a>, Barrett will be in charge of advertising revenue and operations worldwide at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, including units in the U.S., Europe and Asia reporting in to him. Barrett will report directly to interim CEO Ross Levinsohn. </p>
<p>The move to hire the high-profile exec &#8212; who has been working at Google since it bought an ad tech company he ran a year ago &#8212; gives Yahoo a boost in its most critical area of business. </p>
<p>The search giant acquired supply-side advertising technology start-up AdMeld for $400 million a year ago. Before that, Barrett had previously worked at a range of digital and traditional media companies. </p>
<p>His hiring is also a clear signal that Yahoo is about to make major changes to its ad business going forward. According to numerous sources, Yahoo is again mulling a plan to abandon or sell large parts of its ad tech business and rely on third-party vendors, including Google. </p>
<p>Sources said Barrett was interested in the big opportunity Yahoo possessed and felt the ad market was still interested in helping it maintain its online ad business. </p>

Prior to Admeld, Barrett worked at Fox Interactive Media as Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer, where he oversaw worldwide revenue for all properties including MySpace and FoxSports.com and worked closely with Levinsohn. Before that, Barrett served as Executive Vice President of Sales and Partnerships at AOL Media Networks and held senior sales positions at interactive leaders Yahoo!, GeoCities and Disney Online.</p>

<p>Facebook&#8217;s high-profile CTO Bret Taylor is leaving the Silicon Valley social networking giant later this summer, with future plans to work on an as-yet-to-be-determined start-up.</p>
<p>The move is likely to be of concern to some over the newly public company&#8217;s ability to hold onto entrepreneurial talent, especially in the wake of continued intense media and investor scrutiny over its rocky IPO last month.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true since Taylor has been in charge of both platform and mobile efforts at Facebook, a critical arena for it.</p>
<p>A pair of Facebook execs under Taylor &#8212; Mike Vernal and Cory Ondrejka &#8212; will be taking over platform and mobile, respectively.</p>
<p>Vernal joined Facebook in 2008 from Microsoft, leading the original Facebook Connect project and also working on platform efforts and the development of Open Graph. Ondrejka arrived at the company in 2010 through the acquisition of Walletin; he previously worked at Linden Labs on Second Life virtual worlds.</p>
<p>While well qualified, they have big shoes to fill. Named to CTO two years ago, Taylor has also been a strong public figure at Facebook events, including its recent developers conference. And he was front and center at Apple&#8217;s Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this week at the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120611/after-years-of-courtship-apple-and-facebook-finally-hook-up/">announcement of Facebook integration into its newest iOS</a>.</p>
<p>In an interview today, Taylor said he understands that his departure will be perceived as a disruption, although he noted that Facebook had a deep bench of talented technical staff under CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>&#8220;I had always been upfront with Mark that I eventually wanted to do another start-up,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And we felt now is the best time after the IPO and the launch of some recent things for me to do that.&#8221;</p>
<p>That includes the Apple deal, Facebook Camera and also its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120607/welcome-home-developers-facebook-launches-app-center/">App Center</a>, which helps users find mobile and desktop apps their friends like. </p>
<p>Facebook is also reportedly working on a major effort to create its own smartphone, a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120425/facebooks-buffy-phone-yep-its-still-happening/">project known as &#8220;Buffy.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Taylor, who had previously worked at Google, has a strong start-up background. He left the search giant to found FriendFeed, a once-popular social aggregator. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090810/facebook-acquires-not-twitter-oops-friendfeed-plus-the-full-press-release/">FriendFeed was acquired by Facebook</a> in 2009.</p>
<p>Noting that his time at Facebook &#8220;has been the among the most fulfilling times of my career,&#8221; Taylor said that his departure was only part of life as usual in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>&#8220;Cross-pollination among companies is what drives so much of innovation, so I would not project a lot onto this event,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I am really confident that the mobile and platform leaders at Facebook can deliver what needs to be done.&#8221;</p>
<p>When asked about the worries he had for the company, Taylor said the challenge of becoming public was top of mind internally.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are dealing with the cultural change of increasing attention, from going from a private company with a lot of scrutiny to a public company with a lot more scrutiny,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But he maintained that Facebook&#8217;s ability to remain nimble as it grew was strong, noting that the tech side continues to work in small teams. &#8220;These details really matter,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>As for his own future, Taylor said he had not decided the area that he was going to focus on, but that he would be starting something with another former Googler, Kevin Gibbs.</p>
<p>Taylor said that he would probably focus on an industry he does not understand well as a consumer, as he did when he was working on Google&#8217;s mapping efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;People said we had no sense of direction, so making maps better made sense,&#8221; he joked. &#8220;That turned out pretty well.&#8221;</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>I wanted to let you all know that I&#8217;ll be leaving Facebook later this summer. I&#8217;m sad to be leaving, but I&#8217;m excited to be starting a company with my friend Kevin Gibbs.</p>
<p>While a transition like this is never easy, I&#8217;m extremely confident in the teams and leadership we have in place. I&#8217;m very proud of our recent accomplishments in our platform and mobile products, from Open Graph and App Center to Facebook Camera and our iOS integration. I&#8217;m even more excited for the world to see all the amazing things these teams have coming.</p>

<p>Top execs at Yahoo and Facebook have been hammering out the outlines of a deal over the last several days to end their <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120312/breaking-yahoo-sues-facebook-for-patent-infringement/">contentious patent infringement litigation</a>, according to multiple sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>While that could change, sources said a settlement could happen in the coming weeks and that the advanced negotiations will put aside the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120403/breaking-facebook-smacks-at-yahoo-with-patent-claims-of-its-own/">lawsuits and counterclaims</a> between the one-time close partners and return them back to what could be an even closer relationship.</p>
<p>The key terms being discussed, said sources, include a massive cross-licensing of patents between the Internet giant and the social networking kingpin and an even deeper integration of Facebook into Yahoo and vice versa, which has been a key element of improved engagement of late on Yahoo.</p>
<p>One possible glitch: While Facebook has indicated a willingness to perhaps buy some of Yahoo&#8217;s valuable patents, sources said the company is not likely to fork over a massive cash payment to Yahoo as part of a deal. </p>
<p>In a slap to Yahoo&#8217;s lawsuit, Facebook <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120423/microsoft-and-facebook-to-announce-550-million-patent-deal/">recently paid Microsoft $550 million</a> to both buy and also license key patents that the software giant had acquired from AOL, and sources said it is unlikely to do the same for Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook paid a lot of money for patents already, just not to Yahoo,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. </p>
<p>That could be a tough reality to swallow for Yahoo, especially since its lawsuit was predicated on the notion that it could get a huge payoff from Facebook in any settlement.</p>
<p>That was the argument used by former CEO Scott Thompson, under whose leadership the legal action was first filed, to convince Yahoo&#8217;s board to move forward. The lawsuit caused much consternation in Silicon Valley, but Yahoo&#8217;s directors had been told that success could mean many billions of dollars from Facebook to end the fight.</p>
<p>But Thompson was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120513/yahoo-officially-confirms-atd-report-on-ceo-changes-and-proxy-settlement/">recently ousted from his job over a resume-padding controversy</a>, and it appears that Yahoo board members who pushed for the lawsuit are now distancing themselves from its filing. </p>
<p>In other words, it was all Scott&#8217;s fault, so now that he&#8217;s gone: <em>Bygones</em>!</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s be clear: It wasn&#8217;t his doing alone by <em>any</em> means, but Yahoo is now facing an uphill and long-term battle in the case to win anything at all. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s why its new interim CEO, Ross Levinsohn, along with several board members, including Third Point&#8217;s Daniel Loeb, have stepped up talks. </p>
<p>(Yahoo&#8217;s on a bit of a goodwill mission, recently adding activist shareholder Loeb as a Yahoo director after settling its proxy fight with him, as well as finally completing a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120520/yahoo-and-alibaba-officially-shake-on-7-billion-stock-sale-deal/">complex asset sale deal with China&#8217;s Alibaba Group</a>.)</p>
<p>Interestingly, for Yahoo&#8217;s side, this negotiation now appears to be more of a group effort &#8212; with board members actively involved &#8212; than a solo performance by Levinsohn as the company presses for a solution now. </p>
<p>Facebook is also very motivated to get rid of the problem, especially because its recent borked IPO has taken up a lion&#8217;s share of the media and investor perception and attention. Sources said execs there hope that a successful settlement with Yahoo &#8212; as well as an expected announcement of an integration with Apple&#8217;s iOS at the Worldwide Developers Conference in mid-June &#8212; will return the focus to forward momentum by Facebook.</p>
<p>To underscore the importance of settlement, the discussions are being led by the social networking site&#8217;s powerful COO, Sheryl Sandberg, along with its VP of partnerships, Dan Rose.</p>
<p>Sandberg and Levinsohn (and his posse of hey-can-I-help-too Yahoo directors) talked in depth about the settlement at the recent 10th <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference earlier this week, after a number of previous discussions had already taken place. </p>

<p>Facebook created the definitive social network. Google followed suit with Google+. Must Apple create its own version of a social network?</p>
<p>According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the answer is no; it doesn&#8217;t need to reinvent the wheel. But that comes with a caveat: &#8220;Does Apple need to <em>be</em> social?&#8221; Cook asked rhetorically. &#8220;Yes.&#8221;</p>
<p>The idea, Cook said <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120529/live-apple-ceo-tim-cooks-first-time-in-the-hot-seat-at-d/">in conversation with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at <strong>D10</strong></a>, isn&#8217;t that Apple needs to own the network itself. It&#8217;s to take that social integration and use it to improve upon the company&#8217;s existing products.</p>
<p>&#8220;Things like this make our devices even more useful to people,&#8221; Cook said. Think of Twitter&#8217;s integration into iOS, and later, the Mac OS.</p>
<p>But what about Ping, the ill-fated, iTunes-based social network that has languished ever since its launch in 2010?</p>
<p>&#8220;We tried Ping, and I think the customer voted and said, &#8216;this isn’t something that I want to put a lot of energy into,&#8217;&#8221; Cook admitted (after trying unsuccessfully to avoid the question).</p>
<p>So does that mean Ping is dead? &#8220;I don’t know,&#8221; Cook said. &#8220;We’ll look at it.”</p>

<p>Anyone with an iPhone knows how cozy Apple and Twitter are; tweeting is integrated into iOS&#8217;s blood. Conspicuously absent from Apple&#8217;s iOS platform, however, is the <em>other</em> social network. You know, the one that just went public: Facebook.</p>
<p>So why isn&#8217;t Facebook more fully integrated into Apple&#8217;s software?</p>
<p>The idea <em>isn&#8217;t</em> off the table. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120529/live-apple-ceo-tim-cooks-first-time-in-the-hot-seat-at-d/">Onstage at our <strong>D10</strong> conference</a>, Apple CEO Tim Cook said his company&#8217;s current relationship with Facebook is &#8220;very solid. I think we can do more with them,&#8221; Cook said.</p>
<p>At the very least, it sounds like the two companies are talking, though they seem to be taking time in finding a middle ground. Take Cook&#8217;s analogy on the issue, when asked specifically about Facebook integration:</p>
<p>&#8220;I think that two people that have strong points of view can appreciate each other even more,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Because you have a point of view doesn’t mean you can’t work with other people.&#8221; </p>
<p>So is it a war of wills in hammering out the details? Perhaps. But Cook recognizes the value of Facebook. &#8220;We want to provide customers simple solutions. And Facebook has millions &#8212; hundreds of millions &#8212; of customers.&#8221;</p>

<p>Zander Lurie &#8212; CBS&#8217;s SVP of strategic development, who worked on a number of its key digital initiatives &#8212; is leaving the media giant.</p>
<p>Lurie has been involved in everything from the company&#8217;s acquisition of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110304/cbs-acquires-clicker-names-lanzone-interactive-chief/">Clicker</a> to its recent spate of licensing deals for digital distribution of its premium content to the integration of its CNET tech news unit.</p>
<p>He does not have another job lined up, but is looking for an operational role, he said in an interview.</p>
<p>Lurie was CFO of CBS Interactive, before moving to his corporate role. Previously, he worked on M&#038;A at CNET. </p>
<p>&#8220;CBS is now at a place where everything is really integrated and working between all the digital platforms and our sports, news and entertainment products,&#8221; said Lurie. &#8220;So, I want to get out and build something new and from the ground up.&#8221;</p>

<p>Shakil Khan, the well-known head of special projects for the popular Spotify music service, is taking a job with the same title at Path, the fast-growing personal social networking start-up.</p>
<p>Khan will be focusing on growth and international issues, and based out of London but with global duties. Path&#8217;s HQ is in San Francisco.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important, since Path has been growing strongly outside its initial U.S. market, especially in Asia. In February, Path CEO Dave Morin <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120203/path-now-has-2m-users-having-doubled-since-it-relaunched-two-months-ago/">announced that it had</a> two million users.</p>
<p>In an interview last night, Khan said he will remain an adviser to Spotify&#8217;s CEO and co-founder Daniel Ek, noting that he is also an investor. </p>
<p>Interestingly, said many sources and also a number of reports, both Path and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120329/spotify-keeps-the-free-music-party-going-in-the-u-s/">Spotify</a> are in the midst of large funding rounds with hefty valuations.</p>
<p>In fact, Spotify is being valued at $4 billion, which was not the case when Khan came to the then-fledgling company in 2008. Taking up a job essentially as a kind of fix-it guy for Ek, he worked on a number of important initiatives, from gaining early user traction to hiring its early management to wrangling celebrities to use the service.</p>
<p>Khan said that he decided to leave Spotify, which has recently had a huge spurt of growth due to its recent integration on Facebook, because he has &#8220;always been a start-up guy.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I loved the days when people used to say, &#8216;What is that, how do you spell it,&#8217;&#8221; he said about Spotify. &#8220;I need those kind of butterflies, and Path is just that kind of amazing product with huge global potential.&#8221;</p>
<p>In an email, Path&#8217;s Morin said: </p>
<p>&#8220;We are beyond delighted that Shak has chosen to join the Path family as we continue our mission to build the first global personal network by helping people journal and share life with family and close friends. Shak brings a unique global perspective and skill set to Path which will help us reach and serve our members and partners across the globe in a uniquely personal way.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Ek, calling in from Sweden (where it is 80 degrees!), said that he was sad to see Khan go, and was also in his debt for his service to Spotify.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am kind of an introvert guy, and Shak is definition of social, so he was the link to the rest of the world in many ways for me and for the company,&#8221; said Ek. &#8220;So where he is going and what he will be doing at Path is perfect.&#8221;</p>

<p>Over the next two weeks, we&#8217;re going to follow the schedule of the actual event. Up now: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111019/andy-lees-asiad/?refcat=asiad">Andy Lees</a>, president of the Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Phone division.</p>
<p>As such &#8212; and coming from way behind, compared to smartphone leaders Google with Android, and Apple with iOS, iPhone and iPad &#8212; Lees is working to extend Microsoft&#8217;s longtime desktop hegemony to mobile. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a great time to watch the full onstage conversation between Lees and <strong>AllThingsD</strong>&#8217;s Ina Fried, since Microsoft is holding a big event in New York on Monday to celebrate the U.S. launch of devices running the new Mango version of Windows Phone 7. </p>
<p>The update, which features Twitter integration, multitasking and other features, has already been available for older devices; new models, with the operating system preloaded, are just hitting the market.</p>

<p>Memo to Flipboard, as well as Pulse, CNN&#8217;s Zite and AOL&#8217;s Editions: You might want to make some room in the already-crowded news and social reader space, because you&#8217;re about to get some bigfoot company.</p>
<p>Next Wednesday, according to sources close to the situation, Yahoo will finally officially unveil its offering, called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a>.</p>
<p>And perhaps as early as next week or in the weeks soon after, Google will also weigh in with its version of the genre &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/its-called-google-propeller-and-its-aimed-at-flipboard-and-facebook-too/">code-named Propeller</a> &#8212; which also might be the product&#8217;s name. Another moniker under strong consideration: Currents.</p>
<p>As I have previously reported, Google Propeller is an HTML5 reader for the Apple iPad and Android &#8212; essentially a souped-up version of similar apps such as Flipboard, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">AOL&#8217;s Editions</a>, Zite (which was just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">bought by Time Warner&#8217;s CNN</a>) and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110616/pulse-gets-quicker-with-9m-in-funding/">Pulse</a>. </p>
<p>All these apps are part of the drastically changing habits of media consumers, helping users better navigate numerous social and media feeds &#8212; such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as news sites and more &#8212; using handsome interfaces and touch technologies on tablet devices.</p>
<p>Flipboard, the most prominent and elegant of these offerings, is now available only on the Apple iPad. </p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s traction among elite users, along with its high-level design ethos and strong reviews, is why Google tried to buy the well-funded company last year, sources said.</p>
<p>But Flipboard &#8212; which is backed by some of tech&#8217;s biggest venture players, who have invested <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">more than $60 million at a $200 million valuation</a> &#8212; declined the kind offer.</p>
<p>At the time, sources said, Google told Flipboard execs that if it did not buy the start-up, it planned to do a version of its own.</p>
<p>Hence, after I heard about the product earlier this year, I dubbed it the <em>Flipinator</em>.</p>

<p>According to sources, Propeller will launch with a plethora of media partners, as well as integration into the Google+ social network. The aim of the search giant is to offer media companies easy tools for publishing content on these devices, as well as a better path to monetization.</p>
<p>That is essentially the same plan at Yahoo, which has been working on Livestand with hopes of it being a product that will woo publishers into tight collaboration with the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/02/16/video-demo-livestand-from-yahoo/">Livestand was announced</a> by Yahoo&#8217;s now-fired CEO Carol Bartz in February, at a speech at the World Mobile Congress in Spain.</p>
<p>At the time, Bartz demoed a magazinelike platform that would allow publishers to put up content easily and give users the ability to personalize their selections based on search history and interests.</p>
<p>Bartz called it &#8220;content in context.&#8221; (You can see the demo video below.)</p>
<p>But while Bartz promised the product within three months, development has been slowed by its complex technologies, bugs and the need to sign on publishers. </p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is pushing the product hard as a way for the company to reinvigorate its media products.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how many publishers Yahoo will have at launch, and neither are the distribution plans, beyond flacking it from the Web site and being present in app stores.</p>
<p>Google, on the other hand, has its Android platform to push out Propeller, although it all must work as well on Apple&#8217;s iPad, which is the dominant tablet on the market.</p>
<p>But just because both Yahoo and Google are big companies is by no means a guarantee of success &#8212; think Yahoo 360 or Google Wave or Buzz &#8212; and their lateness might be a hindrance.</p>
<p>And, in fact, other news reader apps are much further along. The leader, Flipboard, has already had four million downloads and 50 partnerships with leading publishers.</p>
<p>It also has started to introduce rich advertising products and, perhaps most importantly, has tight social integration with Twitter and Facebook.</p>
<p>There will be social elements on both Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and Google&#8217;s Propeller. But news reading will be stressed more, making them more like Pulse, a tiny but highly innovative start-up.</p>
<p>Each of the existing apps will presumably compete by adding on more features. Pulse recently added <a href="http://blog.pulse.me/your-news-everywhere-sync-sources-to-your-pul-0">cross-platform, cross-device syncing</a>, while Flipboard is close to unveiling <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/pre-200-million-valuation-flipboards-mike-mccue-at-sxsw-the-full-onstage-video/">an iPhone version</a> it has said it was working on.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Google PR declined comment.</p>

<p>Think about the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110831/doj-seeks-to-block-att-t-mobile-merger/">federal government&#8217;s blocking of the $39 billion AT&#038;T and T-Mobile merger</a> and you might want to reread Google&#8217;s blog today, penned in reaction to the news that the Justice Department is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110928/feds-taking-close-look-at-google-motorola-deal/">making a second request</a> for information about its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is pretty routine,&#8221; wrote Google&#8217;s Motorola integration exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110924/googles-woodside-to-lead-motorola-mobility-integration/">Dennis Woodside</a>. &#8220;We&#8217;ve gotten these kind of requests before.&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe Google has (and it has with other purchases) &#8212; but in actuality, only four percent of transactions got such a follow-up request from regulators.</p>
<p>To be fair, it is much more common in high-profile, big-money deals like this one, but it means a longer closing period and more uncertainty around the Android mobile ecosystem until it&#8217;s done. </p>
<p>Still, Google has good reason to be patient. Despite tough criticism and brutal lobbying, it won approval from Justice for its $700 million deal to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110413/google-ita-software-acquisition-now-complete/">buy flight data service ITA Software</a> in April, after nine months of scrutiny and a number of conditions imposed.</p>
<p>And the search giant waited out an intense six-month Federal Trade Commission approval process last year for its $750 million acquisition of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100521/ftc-gives-google-admob-deal-green-light-a-big-bouquet-of-flowers-sent-to-apple/">mobile advertising start-up AdMob</a>. It had an even harder time with the FTC&#8217;s nod of its 2007 <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20070502/microsoft-247/">DoubleClick purchase</a> for $3.1 billion.</p>
<p>One that it lost &#8212; an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20080410/microhoo-jesus-is-coming-look-busy/">obvious bridge too far</a> that I dubbed <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081105/google-dumps-yahoo-which-should-come-as-a-shock-only-to-yahoo/">Yahoogle</a> &#8212; was Google&#8217;s 2008 effort to meld a troubling partnership with Yahoo in search advertising.</p>
<p>So, we&#8217;ll see soon enough which way D.C. &#8212; which just had Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt up to the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/liveblogging-googles-schmidt-at-senate-antitrust-hearing/">Senate for an antitrust hearing chit-chat</a> &#8212; will go.</p>

<p>Since we announced our plans to acquire Motorola Mobility, we&#8217;ve been excited about the positive reaction to the proposed deal &#8212; particularly from our partners who have told us that they&#8217;re enthusiastic about our defense of the Android ecosystem.</p>
<p>And as David Drummond said when we announced our plans in August, we&#8217;re confident that this deal will be approved. We believe very strongly this is a pro-competitive transaction that is good for Motorola Mobility, good for consumers, and good for our partners. </p>
<p>That said, we know that close scrutiny is part of the process and we&#8217;ve been talking to the U.S. Department of Justice over the past few weeks. Today we received what is called a &#8220;second request,&#8221; which means that the DOJ is asking for more information so that they can continue to review the deal. (This is pretty routine; we&#8217;ve gotten these kind of requests before.)</p>
<p>While this means we won&#8217;t be closing right away, we&#8217;re confident that the DOJ will conclude that the rapidly growing mobile ecosystem will remain highly competitive after this deal closes. We&#8217;ll be working closely and cooperatively with them as they continue their review.</p></blockquote>

<p>Late last month, BoomTown posted about a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation">huge venture funding effort</a> by the high-profile and even more highly designed social media reading app for the Apple iPad, Flipboard.</p>
<p>Today, its co-founder and CEO Mike McCue confirmed the $50 million round at an eye-popping $200 million valuation, in a wide-ranging interview at the start-up&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., HQ.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously thrilled, because we think it confirms our focus that people want a beautifully designed way to interact with content and to share it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And there is a lot more to come&#8211;on a scale of one to 10, we&#8217;re just at a two or three.&#8221;</p>
<p>The bulk of the new second round of funding&#8211;Flipboard had previously raised $10.5 million&#8211;came from New York-based Insight Venture Partners.</p>
<p>Insight&#8217;s Jerry Murdock said in an interview that he was excited about the idea of &#8220;social endorsement&#8221; that Flipboard was pioneering.</p>
<p>&#8220;We back great entrepreneurs and Flipboard is that and also in an obviously unique position to solve a problem of media consumption in the digital age,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The sky is the limit. Or more precisely it is the best environment to consume curated real-time content for Twitter and Facebook, because of the user experience and social endorsement integration with the content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Insight is also an investor in Twitter.</p>
<p>Also stepping up in the new Flipboard round is Comcast&#8217;s venture arm, as well as previous investors, including Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Twitter co-founder and product guru Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder and Asana dude Dustin Moskovitz, the ubiquitous Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>&#8220;From a Comcast perspective, we&#8217;re intrigued with Mike and what he&#8217;s doing with content aggregation,&#8221; said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101115/exclusive-comcasts-top-digital-exec-amy-banse-to-open-new-silicon-valley-equity-fund-for-cable-giant-and-nbc">Amy Banse</a>, Comcast Interactive Capital&#8217;s new head. &#8220;We think we can learn from him and he from us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime entrepreneur McCue (Netscape, Tellme) and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million">launched to much attention in July</a>.</p>
<p>The elegant Flipboard&#8211;which McCue recently told me in an onstage interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin had zero revenues thus far&#8211;has changed the game on the consumption of social media.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from media RSS feeds and sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In its current offering, there are pull-quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of linked-out content. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on a social networking or microblogging site.</p>
<p>McCue said the new giant pile of cash will be used to increase its 32-person staff to about 50, international expansion, small acquisitions and more product development on more platforms.</p>
<p>The next in the arena will be the iPhone version of Flipboard, said McCue, followed by one for the Google Android mobile operating system eventually.</p>
<p>Left unsaid, of course, was the need for funding to fight the likelihood of increased competition in the hot space for delivering both professional and social content to consumers on a wide range of devices.</p>
<p>Rivals are varied, such as Silicon Valley&#8217;s most adorable news reader start-up <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Pulse</a> and also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite">Zite</a>, a news reader which was recently sued for copyright infringement by a group of major publishers.</p>
<p>There are bigger potential players, such as Google, which is trying to find various ways to move into the social space.</p>
<p>In fact, said several sources, Google and others have made acquisition approaches to Flipboard, which has instead opted for raising more funding and staying independent for now.</p>
<p>McCue declined to talk about that, but did note that he is not surprised by publisher interest, especially of the worried and wary kind, in the arena.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anyone not respectful of others&#8217; content is going to get in that kind of trouble,&#8221; he said, noting Flipboard has struck deals with 17 big publishers so far, including this morning&#8217;s announcement about a partnership with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Oprah Winfrey&#8217;s and Discovery&#8217;s OWN cable network</a>. &#8220;There is not one half to this equation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>McCue said advertising will be the key to Flipboard&#8217;s business plan in the future, although it&#8217;s not clear if the company will ever sell advertising itself.</p>
<p>Rather, it will partner with publishers seeking better distribution in the explosive tablet and smartphone market, where Flipboard has been gaining traction quickly.</p>
<p>But until that is sorted out, there is now $50 million more in the Flipboard kitty to figure it all out.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this funding, we can grow at the right pace and have a lot of flexibility to get the product right,&#8221; said McCue. &#8220;And, that&#8217;s the most important thing.&#8221;</p>

<p>Well, Wayn must have liked what he saw at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, since he is bouncing there from his job at the Redmond, Wash. software giant to help run local efforts at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Wayn will be working for Chief Product Officer Blake Irving  and will be responsible for product management of Yahoo&#8217;s local &#8220;horizontal.&#8221;</p>
<p>He will work closely with whoever Yahoo finds as a replacement for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Matt Idema</a>, a longtime Yahoo exec who shuttled over to Facebook as a director of business operations, working on the local arena.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Luke Beatty</a>, who heads up Yahoo&#8217;s Americas region community and local businesses, including Flickr, Groups, Answers and hundreds of local sites, is doing Idema&#8217;s job for now within Americas head Ross Levinsohn&#8217;s unit.</p>
<p>Local is a hugely hot space right now, with a spate of Web focus from giants like Google and Facebook to powerful start-ups such as Foursquare and Groupon.</p>
<p>Wayn has more recently been working on international for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal. The Australian native has also worked at AOL and, interestingly, has an actual medical degree.</p>
<p>In other words: <em>Paging Dr. Local, stat!</em></p>

<p>He will outline how the New York-based Internet portal, which paid $315 million to acquire the high-profile news and opinion site, will essentially close down dozens of its dedicated content sites&#8211;some being shuttered completely and others integrated with existing Huffington Post sites.</p>
<p>One example of the first is Politics Daily, as has been previously reported; it will no longer exist as a brand. Its staff is being integrated into the Huffington Post&#8217;s more robust political offerings.</p>
<p>It goes both ways, though&#8211;the Huffington Post&#8217;s travel site will be closed in favor of AOL&#8217;s stronger offering in that arena.</p>
<p>And still other well-known AOL brands, such as its PopEater celebrity site and its StyleList fashion and beauty site, will keep their names but no longer exist as separate destination sites. PopEater will be integrated into HuffPo&#8217;s entertainment and StyleList to its similar site.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE:</strong> StyleList's status was shifted just this morning--it will remain a standalone brand and AOL's Shelterpop will become StyleList at Home, integrating into StyleList. Plus it will all now be called Stylist--losing the "e" and capped "L."]</p>
<p>The changes are causing some tension within AOL, given it is a drastic shift from relatively recent efforts to expand its portfolio of editorial sites.</p>
<p>In fact, some insiders are calling the recent vetting of which content sites to close and which to keep as &#8220;death panels,&#8221; a somewhat dicey reference to controversies over the Obama administration&#8217;s healthcare plan.</p>
<p>Also on deck for tomorrow will be letters sent out to freelancers about new plans to hire some&#8211;though not all&#8211;of them. According to several sources, AOL content head Arianna Huffington outlined the plan to editors recently, stressing the need to focus on staff-generated and more journalistically focused content.</p>
<p>One thing that is not happening is the appointment of a new editor-in-chief for AOL&#8217;s flagship tech news site, Engadget.</p>
<p>BoomTown reported on the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110312/engadgets-top-editors-topolsky-and-patel-exit-from-aols-giant-tech-site">recent departure of Engadget&#8217;s top two editors</a>, Editor-in-Chief Josh Topolsky and Managing Editor Nilay Patel.</p>
<p>The news rocketed around the small echo chamber that is the tech blogosphere, which is no surprise since Engadget is one of the largest sites on the Web covering the tech sector.</p>
<p>In the interim, staffer <a href="http://www.engadget.com/editor/darren-murph">Darren Murph</a> has been appointed managing editor of Engadget. He reports to Joshua Fruhlinger, editorial director for Engadget, Switched and AOL Tech. Brad Hill is the business director for the properties.</p>
<p>Engadget is one of the largest in tech, with 14 million unique visitors a month. Its main competitor is Gawker&#8217;s Gizmodo. AOL also owns TechCrunch, another tech news site.</p>
<p>An email to AOL for comment has not yet been returned.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s no question it&#8217;s a jarring contrast&#8211;layoffs versus champagne and cookies.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s the reality at AOL as its acquisition of the Huffington Post closes this week, even as it sheds employees as part of its ongoing turnaround effort.</p>
<p>Sources said the New York-based Internet portal could announce layoffs as early as today.</p>
<p>[UPDATE: Layoffs will not come until after the Huffington Post deal is closed said other sources, although they are coming.]</p>
<p>AOL CEO Tim Armstrong indicated job cuts were definitely coming at a paidContent conference in New York yesterday.</p>
<p>&#8220;There will be job changes,&#8221; he said, when asked about layoffs.</p>
<p>Perhaps sooner than later.</p>
<p>BoomTown received several emails from worried AOL employees, noting that human resources staffers were taking steps to initiate the layoffs at 10 am ET/7 am PT this morning and that there would also be employee meetings then too.</p>
<p>I followed up with several sources close to the situation, who confirmed that the layoffs are imminent. Nonetheless, they could not specify the timing, size and scope of them.</p>
<p>[UPDATE: There will be an all-hands meeting for AOL staff with Armstrong, as well as new content head Arianna Huffington.]</p>
<p>The last time AOL laid off employees a year ago, it was a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100111/aol-begins-firing-employees-who-wouldnt-leave">large action with job cuts of 2,300</a>.</p>
<p>The latest slashing comes just as AOL management will try to aggressively tout the closing of its $315 million purchase of the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>The integration of the well-known news and opinion site will mean a significant change for AOL&#8217;s editorial efforts, as well as an opportunity to impress advertisers.</p>
<p>Thus, AOL is prepping boxes with Greek cookies and pricey champagne to send out to key advertising clients, to celebrate the deal&#8217;s close.</p>
<p>Why Greek cookies? Because it&#8217;s the original country of Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post.</p>

<p>Yes, it&#8217;s actually called Mogwee, which was the codename for the new mobile social communications service being launched tonight by Ning, the high-profile social networking platform co-founded by Silicon Valley icon and investor Marc Andreessen.</p>
<p>Part Twitter, part SMS, part Path and any number of such social start-ups, Mogwee actually stands for &#8220;more great weekends,&#8221; said CEO Jason Rosenthal, who has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100719/ning-ceo-jason-rosenthal-talks-about-premium-conversion-of-social-networking-platform">focusing Ning on premium offerings</a>.</p>
<p>BoomTown interviewed Rosenthal and Andreessen&#8211;who is also chairman of Ning&#8211;at an overpriced tea salon in San Francisco last week about the latest entrant into the crowded socializing of smartphones market.</p>
<p>The Mogwee app was approved today for the Apple iPhone and iPad. The Google Android version is coming in about a week and the one for Research in Motion&#8217;s BlackBerry is to come after that.</p>
<p>Also on deck: Integration with big social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Currently, the only way to bring in friends is via your cell phone&#8217;s address book.</p>
<p>Once loaded, you can use Mogwee to chat live, share photos, play games, make analog plans and&#8211;<em>horrors</em>&#8211;throw sheep.</p>
<p>As you can see from the video and screenshots below, a user creates any series of &#8220;Hangouts&#8221;&#8211;such as a whiskey one by Andreessen&#8211;for real-time groups or one-to-one chat.</p>

<p>HP CTO Phil McKinney says the company is working on bringing an integrated webOS experience to the PC.  &#8220;There&#8217;s a huge user base that still wants the [Windows] PC,&#8221; <a href="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/technologybrierdudleysblog/2014222905_qa_hp_exec_on_webos_vs_microso.html">he told the Seattle Times.</a> &#8220;The key is that even on their PCs, people want to have it integrated with their devices. We have our PCs, you have your pads, you&#8217;ve got your phones. How do they work together? In today&#8217;s world they all act as individual information islands. What webOS does is bring all that together.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, HP isn&#8217;t dumping Windows, it&#8217;s enhancing it&#8211;at least for now. A wise move, since the former would be suicide at this point, even though it&#8217;s unclear how HP will pull it off. McKinney said the integration will not be done via virtualization, but rather through &#8220;a combination of taking the existing operating systems and bringing webOS onto those platforms and making it universal across all of our footprint.&#8221;</p>
