<p>There&#8217;s no doubt that the highly-valued Flipboard has been at the forefront of social publishing. </p>
<p>With its popular app for the Apple iPhone and iPads, the Silicon Valley startup now has 50 million readers, who use it to elegantly consume content from Facebook, Twitter and a myriad of sources from all over the Web. </p>
<p>Now, in its new second version, the company is moving from a show-me paradigm to a make-something one, allowing users to &#8220;create magazines,&#8221; according to Flipboard.</p>
<p>In fact, that&#8217;s a bit of a broad definition of create &#8212; Flipboard 2.0 is more about allowing regular people or professional publishers to curate any kind of magazine in any niche.</p>
<p>For example, in testing the app, I made a magazine about Pop-Tarts. (Does anyone have a problem with that?)</p>
<p>Using a new &#8220;plus&#8221; button and a pretty easy interface, it is meant to take self-expression to new levels using video, images, text and even music. To help grow audiences for these quasi-creators, as well as find stuff to use, Flipboard has also launched a new content search feature.</p>
<p>There should be some fun stuff created to keep users flipping on the service, but it&#8217;s clear the offering is also a lot about finding more revenue for the startup. Using specialized magazines, for example, publishers can instantly create one-offs of previously published content &#8212; from Vanity Fair&#8217;s &#8220;Royal Weddings&#8221; to Martha Stewart Living&#8217;s &#8220;Home How-Tos&#8221; &#8212; and presumably sell advertising against it. </p>
<p>Flipboard has also partnered with crafts retailer Etsy to make what is essentially a prettified catalog, complete with an integrated shopping cart, for which there are all kinds of lead fees. </p>
<p>Since it has remained independent so far despite some big acquisition interest, figuring out a solid business plan is important, especially since Flipboard <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">did a massive $50 million fundraising round that valued it at $200 million</a> two years ago.</p>
<p>Its investors include Insight Venture Partners, Comcast Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Jack Dorsey of Twitter and Square, Facebook co-founder and Asana co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, investor Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company run by former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>

<p>Well, it wasn&#8217;t as tasty as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120729/in-week-two-marissa-mayer-googifies-yahoo-free-food-friday-afternoon-all-hands-new-work-spaces-fab-swag/">free food</a> this week at Yahoo, but in her second official all-hands meeting with employees &#8212; now reportedly called &#8220;Friday FYI&#8221; &#8212; new CEO Marissa Mayer rolled out another new Google-inspired Q&#038;A tool to get the company talking about what matters.</p>
<p>The system allows anyone at the Silicon Valley Internet giant to post questions, ideas or suggestions on a variety of topics, which can then be voted up and down.</p>
<p>Actually, it&#8217;s been in use internally at &#8212; <em>you guessed it</em> &#8212; Google for some time, and is even available to the general public in a product called <a href="https://www.google.com/moderator/">Google Moderator</a>. Mayer has been importing a lot of corporate practices from the search giant where she worked for her entire career &#8212; from free food to better swag to these weekly confabs to, now, its method of hearing from the staff.</p>
<p>While Yahoo previously used its Messenger product to garner questions for its less-regular all-hands meetings, this is apparently a new interactive tool built by the company&#8217;s engineers (and not using Google&#8217;s free APIs, as far as I can tell).</p>
<p>It seems to be working fine, and there were a number of questions that bubbled up.</p>
<p>That included one about Mayer&#8217;s thoughts on her current executive team &#8212; which is still largely inherited from a series of previous administrations, despite some departures recently &#8212; and also how her regime will hold them accountable.</p>
<p>Algorithmic accountability among Yahoo execs? Things <em>have</em> changed!</p>
<p>Even better, declared the questioner of that particular query, to whoops from the audience: &#8220;I want an honest answer!&#8221;</p>
<p>But Mayer was diplomatic, only saying she was &#8220;pleasantly surprised&#8221; by the top execs. She also noted that the management would have quarterly goals that are transparent to the whole company. (I won&#8217;t say they do that at Google, but &#8212; <em>ahem</em> &#8212; they do that at Google.)</p>
<p>Mayer went through a number of questions in a precise and cut-the-mustard manner that employees seem to be enjoying, overall.</p>
<p>One very voted-up question was about leaks to the media, in particular to this Web site, and whether a board mole hunt has been successful (obviously not). Also, of course, what she was going to do about the situation.</p>
<p>Apparently, Mayer said she won&#8217;t be tracking down leakers, and that this new openness will solve the problem.</p>
<p>Good idea, but all that lovely transparency also needs some pretty good products if it&#8217;s going to work.</p>
<p>And product focus most definitely appears to be the path now. Mayer also showed off the new Yahoo Mail  &#8212; which has been under revamp for a while, and was started under former Chief Product Officer Blake Irving &#8212; with some good response from Yahoos (last week, it was a look-see at its recent iteration of its IntoNow video offering).</p>
<p>There are other interface changes that have been in the works too, likely under the direction of Tim Parsey, Yahoo&#8217;s head designer, who also came on under Irving.</p>
<p>In fact, a lot of what Irving had pushed, including keeping advertising technology in-house and also maintaining control of key monetization engines, is the likeliest path going forward. The ad tech outsourcing deals, pushed by the interim CEO and his strategy head Jim Heckman, are apparently gone (and so are <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120730/as-expected-ross-levinsohn-departs-yahoo/">Levinsohn</a> and now <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120805/yahoo-strategy-guru-jim-heckman-leaves/">Heckman</a>).</p>
<p>Also of interest to many at the company is the increased involvement of co-founder David Filo, who has become much less quiet under Mayer. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Rakuten, which runs the largest e-commerce site in Japan, is expected to be the lead investor in the much-contested next round of funding for Silicon Valley&#8217;s hottest start-up, Pinterest.</p>
<p>The funding is expected to be announced tomorrow morning.</p>
<p>(<strong>Update:</strong> Rakuten confirmed the deal in a press release, which is below.)</p>

<p>The Tokyo-based Internet giant will invest upwards of $50 million in a $100 million round that values the social bookmarking phenom at $1.5 billion.</p>
<p>There might be other individual investors in the new round, but those were still to be determined tonight by Pinterest co-founder and CEO Ben Silbermann.</p>
<p>(<strong>Correction</strong>: We previously reported it was a $120 million round, but sources said it is $100 million. It&#8217;s possible more could still be added, as we heard conflicting accounts.)</p>
<p>While the latest round of funding for Pinterest has been the most hotly sought of late in tech circles, one source said Silbermann was looking for a global strategic investor and had talked to several large Asian companies.</p>
<p>Said one source on why he settled on Rakuten: &#8220;He just really liked them.&#8221;</p>
<p>The current investors in Pinterest, which is a social collection site where users can &#8220;pin&#8221; their interests via a handsome graphical interface, include Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners and FirstMark Capital, as well as several well-known angel investors. That group had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111007/exclusive-pinterest-set-to-close-a-new-round-with-andreessen-horowitz-valuing-start-up-at-200m/">valued the company at $200 million last October</a>, and are joining the new round pro rata.</p>
<p>Founded in 2008, Pinterest had previously raised a little under $40 million in funding.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s interesting that the latest round was not led by an institutional investor, since everyone and their mother wanted in on the deal. Sources said no new venture capital firms were included in the round and that is the way Pinterest&#8217;s quirky leadership wanted it.</p>
<p>Sources said Silbermann has been concerned with Pinterest&#8217;s global growth as well as fending off international clones, and was looking for a partner with which the start-up could work closely.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ben did not want any more VCs,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;He wanted an investor that moved the company forward.&#8221;</p>

<p>Rakuten will presumably help advise Pinterest on turning their pretty pictures into purchases, as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120328/online-shoppers-say-they-buy-things-they-find-on-pinterest/">commerce is already starting to emerge</a> naturally on the site.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good choice of partners in that regard. Rakuten is one of the largest e-commerce companies in the world, with a flagship site Rakuten Ichiba. It was founded in 1997 and had revenues of $4.7 billion in 2011. Its CEO is Hiroshi Mikitani, whose nickname is Mickey.</p>
<p>One the richest men in Japan, Mikitani is one of the best known entrepreneurs there; he has been described as &#8220;Richard Branson meets Jeff Bezos.&#8221;</p>
<p>Earlier today, <a href="http://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/05/16/pinterest-set-to-announce-new-funding-at-1-billion-valuation-with-an-eye-on-ecommerce/">The Next Web reported</a> that the funding was coming this week and said the company was looking at international partners, but it did not name Rakuten.</p>

<p>Rakuten ranks among the top 10 internet companies in the world. Among its numerous online properties, its flagship B2B2C (business-to-business-to-consumer) model e-commerce site Rakuten Ichiba is the largest e-commerce site in Japan and among the world&#8217;s largest by sales. Its global presence has been reinforced through the acquisitions of leading online marketplaces Buy.com (US), Priceminister (France), Ikeda (now Rakuten Brasil), Tradoria (now Rakuten Deutschland) and Play.com (UK), and investments in Ozon.ru and AHA Life. Whereas other marketplaces may compete directly with sellers, Rakuten&#8217;s model seeks to empower merchants to deliver Omotenashi, a Japanese high service mindset, which helps sellers create lasting relationships with customers.</p></blockquote>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Flipboard co-founder and CEO Mike McCue has approached Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and co-founder Jack Dorsey about moving off the board of Twitter.</p>
<p>It is not clear when McCue &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">who became a director </a> of the San Francisco social communications company in late 2010 &#8212; will step down, but it could come soon.</p>
<p>The reason, sources said, is McCue&#8217;s growing feeling that the companies are on a product collision course, with a possible troubled or perhaps more attractive result.</p>
<p>In other words, Flipboard will either face increasing rivalry from Twitter or will end up as a possible acquisition target for it or other companies.</p>
<p>&#8220;How users consume and use Twitter is a key part of its future, and that is what Flipboard does well already,&#8221; said one person with knowledge of the situation. &#8220;There is going to be an inevitable crossroads for the two companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Twitter has bought several companies that help users read and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111208/twitter-redesigns-to-be-simpler-and-faster/">discover</a>, such as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120119/twitter-acquires-social-summary-tool-summify/">Summify</a>.</p>
<p>The goal has been to better make sense of the massive amount of data that the service produces daily; to that end, Twitter has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120501/twitter-discovery-update/ ">pushed to improve its user interface design</a> on a number of devices. </p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120507/exclusive-flipboard-ceo-mccue-likely-to-step-down-from-twitter-board-over-potential-future-conflicts-or-closer-cooperation/flipboard-twitter/" rel="attachment wp-att-204843"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/05/Flipboard-Twitter-213x285.png" alt="" title="Flipboard-Twitter" width="213" height="285" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-204843" /></a></p>
<p>And Twitter is a big part of Flipboard&#8217;s app, which is very dependent on the tweet feed and accounts for 70 percent of its links, sources said.</p>
<p>Flipboard is also more of a &#8220;mobile first&#8221; company, which is where Twitter is also headed even more aggressively.</p>
<p>Already popular on the Apple iPad, Flipboard <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/news-reader-traffic-jam-yahoos-livestand-and-googles-propeller-set-to-launch-aiming-at-flipboard/">launched its iPhone app</a> late last year and it is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/flipboard-for-android-makes-a-cameo-at-samsungs-galaxy-s-iii-launch/">prepping a version</a> for Google Android soon.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why, in addition to being a rival, it is also an obvious acquisition target for Twitter, as well as others such as Yahoo and Microsoft. </p>
<p>In fact, Google already tried to buy it last year, before Flipboard did a massive <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">$50 million fundraising round that valued it at $200 million</a>. </p>
<p>Its investors include Insight Venture Partners, Comcast&#8217;s venture arm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Dorsey, Facebook co-founder and Asana dude Dustin Moskovitz, Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime entrepreneur McCue (Netscape, Tellme) and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll, Flipboard <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million">launched to much attention in mid 2010</a>.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from media RSS feeds and sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate personalized format.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111208/google-currents-debuts-phew/">Google has mounted a competitor, called Currents,</a> as has Yahoo with its Livestand offering, neither of which have gotten much traction. In fact, sources said, Yahoo is likely to shut Livestand down completely.</p>
<p>There have also been a spate of other similar readers, such as Pulse and Zite. </p>
<p>Spokespersons for both Flipboard and Twitter politely declined comment.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At last year&#8217;s <strong>D9</strong> conference, Sweden-based Tobii <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110626/how-to-control-your-laptop-with-your-eyeballs-tobiis-d9-demo-video/">demonstrated</a> cool eye-tracking technology that enables users to control a PC without hands.</p>
<p>At next week&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Tobii plans to show off how its interactive eye-tracking software, called Gaze, works with Microsoft’s Windows 8 Metro interface. <img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/Eyeball-380x245.png" alt="" title="Eyeball" width="380" height="245" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-160206" /></p>
<p>Gaze would go in a compact rectangular device &#8212; smaller than the current 8-inch Tobii IS-1 tracker &#8212; that sits below the laptop screen and tracks a user&#8217;s eye movement using sensors built into the bar. You activate Gaze by tapping the trackpad once, and Gaze takes a few seconds to find your pupil and calculate the point of gaze using mathematical algorithms. An imaginary &#8220;head movement box&#8221; is created to delineate a range of motion in which you can still move your head and have the device track you.</p>
<p>In terms of precision, Tobii says the sensors measure within a quarter-inch of the tile or icon you’re looking at. For smaller icons or small text, Gaze still allows a user to navigate the cursor using the laptop’s trackpad, by pressing their fingers down on the pad instead of tapping it once.</p>

<p>Gaze could, theoretically, work on tablets, too. But Tobii business development manager Anders Olsson says that tablet interaction is so smooth to begin with &#8212; with capacitive touch within an arm’s length of the user &#8212; that tablets don’t need much improvement. It’s boring old laptops that could use a boost.</p>
<p>“Gaze takes away the whole intermediate step of having a mouse or even using touch technology,&#8221; Olsson said in an interview. &#8220;We see this as an important innovation because, compared to tablets, laptops feel very ancient right now, in terms of user experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>While eye-tracking tech like Gaze could make sense for TV viewing as well, given the growing interest in gesture technology, Olsson said Tobii’s technology isn’t quite up to speed for TV. In fact, it could be a couple more years before Gaze hits the mass market.</p>
<p>Tobii doesn’t plan to sell Gaze directly to consumers, but will work with electronics manufacturers to ship on laptops. While the company says it is in talks with computer makers and electronics manufacturers, it hasn’t officially partnered with anyone, including Microsoft, for the development of Tobii Gaze (although Microsoft is expected to show Tobii eye-tracking demos at its CES booth, as well).</p>
<p>Eye-tracking technology isn’t new, but until now it has been used primarily in niche markets, as a <a href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2383113,00.asp">tool</a> for people with severe physical disabilities, or for <a href="http://www.psych.umass.edu/eyelab/">psychological researchers</a> who monitor eye movement to determine cognitive abilities.</p>
<p>Tobii has been around since 2001, and currently holds 13 patents in the area of eye-tracking tech.</p>

<p>I am here at Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif., to check out &#8220;Product Runway,&#8221; which is the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s attempt to show that it can still innovate. </p>
<p>First and foremost is the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/news-reader-traffic-jam-yahoos-livestand-and-googles-propeller-set-to-launch-aiming-at-flipboard/">launch of Livestand</a>, a personalized news reader that is similar to Flipboard and a variety of other rivals, including &#8212; soon &#8212; Google.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s Yahoo&#8217;s attempt to present a business-as-usual feel &#8212; amidst a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111031/yahoo-shares-melt-as-rumors-conflict-with-other-rumors/">long and agonizing and very public strategic overview</a> that might also include the sale of the company (or <em>not</em>!), in the wake of the recent firing of its last CEO, Carol Bartz.</p>
<p>It has caused a lot of trauma inside Yahoo, which can&#8217;t help with innovation.</p>
<p>But we press on!</p>
<p>In other words, despite the three-ring circus going on outside, Yahoo wants you to know it is still hard at work.</p>
<p>We begin:</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: As the strains of U2 die out, Yahoo Chief Product Officer Blake Irving takes the stage, which is actually set up in the company&#8217;s cafeteria. I can smell lunch being made nearby and I am hungry.</p>
<p>Apt &#8212; Yahoo certainly needs to show off a lot of cool stuff or its fate will be cooked.</p>
<p><em>No pressure, Blake!</em></p>
<p>&#8220;Personally, I am more bullish on Yahoo today,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What is Yahoo? Simple. It&#8217;s the premier digital media company. Period. Stop.&#8221;</p>

<p>Oh, if it were only <em>that</em> easy.</p>
<p><strong>10:46 am</strong>: Irving pulls out his favorite slide, which looks like a chemistry test. It lists the various elements of the product strategy, with things like personalization, mobile, premium.</p>
<p>Now to Livestand, which is available on the Apple iTunes app store right <em>now</em>.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t all rush at once!</p>
<p>Irving notes that Livestand is more than just an app &#8212; it is a platform.</p>
<p>In other words, Yahoo wants to help publishers publish online. Kind of a Facebook of content. </p>
<p>If Yahoo can pull it off, that is. (And, of course, unless Facebook decides to do the same.)</p>
<p><strong>10:50 am</strong>: Livestand is an HTML5 &#8220;personalized living magazine.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the way Web pages are going to look,&#8221; declares Irving. Which is to say, heavy on photos, swoopy navigation, a television screen-like interface.</p>
<p>Irving uses the example of Surfer magazine, which is a good idea since waves always look pretty. Especially in a video-in-frame with Kelly Slater in Hawaii.</p>
<p>But, in essence, for anyone who has used Flipboard for years now, none of this is entirely different.</p>
<p><strong>10:54 am</strong>: The look of what would be the Yahoo News page is actually much more interesting, since it is clearly a whole lot better than the Web page. </p>

<p>Irving also shows off a &#8220;living ad&#8221; &#8212; in this case, an unusually snuggly couple on a couch. It is cool, but creepy.</p>
<p>When launched, the ad has tap points. Irving &#8212; naughtily declaring about what is an ad, &#8220;I&#8217;ll tap that&#8221; &#8212; taps the lady&#8217;s butt, which would also have been my move. We learn about the jeans, of course.</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am</strong>: Irving then shows off the ability to add feeds. </p>
<p>Next, something called &#8220;Cocktails.&#8221; First up, a developer tool called Yahoo Mojito and Yahoo Manhattan, which is a hosting service. The company will open-source both the technologies in 2012.</p>
<p>Irving brings up Mike Kerns, VP of Personalization &#038; Social, who came to Yahoo when it bought the innovative sports fan site called Citizen Sports. </p>
<p>&#8220;We like to ship <em>sh#t</em>,&#8221; he notes. I like Mike Kerns immediately.</p>
<p>Kerns intros C.O.R.E. No, it is not a secret government organization that takes out fussy bloggers, who might be more critical than Yahoo execs would like.</p>
<p>In fact, it stands for &#8220;content optimization relevance engine.&#8221; Of course it does.</p>
<p>Simply put, C.O.R.E. is trying to link the right content or whatever to the right consumers and who likes what. Ladies like this, dudes like this. Apparently, &#8220;men of multiple ages&#8221; enjoy stories about golden chicken.</p>
<p><strong>11:11 am</strong>: Kerns is moving on to social, especially its integration with Facebook. While much touted, sources tell me it has gone slower than expected in terms of use, but that it is improving.</p>
<p>Kerns talks about the idea of matching content to conversations to interests and, well, you know &#8212; the now exhausting world of modern media consumption.</p>

<p>The world in which you can no longer simply read an article and enjoy it &#8212; you must comment, share, discuss, parse, tweet.</p>
<p>Does anyone remember when you read something cool and just kept it to yourself?</p>
<p><em>Forget it, pal!</em> It is a full-information society now and you better get on board and start poking your friends about every little thing.</p>
<p>(Personally, I plan on becoming a hermit in 3 &#8230; 2 &#8230; 1.)</p>
<p><strong>11:18 am</strong>: Now <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110330/yahoo-hires-tim-parsey-as-head-ux-designer/">Tim Parsey</a>, who is Yahoo&#8217;s design head. He is hands down the most delightful exec the company has had in a while, mostly because he loves to smirk adorkably.</p>
<p>He shows off Yahoo&#8217;s first original design, which was a dull list. And then another really bad logo. But Parsey loves it! It&#8217;s <em>kitschy</em>!</p>
<p>Smirk attack!</p>
<p>Parsey moves into what has to happen now, which is to deliver a much more emotional experience and a much better designed one. He uses words like &#8220;humanism.&#8221;</p>
<p>Say what? He is right &#8212; Yahoo has for too long completely ignored design as an important part of the experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why Flipboard was so quickly touted &#8212; it was pretty and fun. And it is why everyone is simply <em>forced</em> to love Apple products.</p>
<p><strong>11:22 am</strong>: Parsey even has a code for it, called REM &#8212; for rational, emotional and meaningful.</p>
<p>He shows off a weather app. People take photos and they can be used in the app. Then Yahoo Mail for the iPad, whic is also handsome with photos and video. Livestand, also pretty.</p>
<p>&#8220;Great way to differentiate,&#8221; says Parsey. He calls it &#8220;one Yahoo!&#8221; Indeed.</p>

<p>Back to IntoNow, it&#8217;s the television indexing service that Yahoo <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110425/yahoo-buys-tv-programming-index-intonow/">bought in April</a>. </p>
<p>Essentially, more ways to watch the media &#8212; in this case, video &#8212; and do 53 other things at the very same time. Memo to humanity: We will all be paying continuous partial attention for the rest of eternity.</p>

<p><strong>11:41 am</strong>: Product dude Irving is back, making a point that, despite all the public mishegas, Yahoo has been busy at innovating. </p>
<p>A redo of email, better search, social &#8220;Facebar&#8221; with Facebook, Flickr for Google Android.</p>
<p>Irving is correct &#8212; Yahoo&#8217;s engineers have been hard at work and deserve kudos for doing so, even with attrition issues, stock declines and questions about the company&#8217;s very future being debated daily.</p>
<p>The problem is that too many of these improvements are mostly incremental and essentially table stakes for tech companies, most of whom have introed many more significant innovations in the same time frame as Yahoo has.</p>
<p>Google did Android, Google+ (as well as some notable failures). Microsoft did Kinect, Windows Phone, Windows 8. Amazon did Kindle Fire. Facebook did a range of major updates, as it has grown like a weed.</p>
<p>And there&#8217;s Apple. You might have heard of the iPhone and the iPad.</p>
<p>You get my point. Yahoo&#8217;s Product Runway today is well done, but what it really needs to be is just the beginning of a take-off.</p>
<p><strong>11:48 am</strong>: Now Q&#038;A time. </p>
<p>The first question is what took so long to get Livestand out, the second is why should people use Livestand since Flipboard and others have already been around for a dog&#8217;s age.</p>

<p>I ask about design &#8212; mostly because I want Parsey to use the word &#8220;delicious&#8221; a lot &#8212; and also about all the turmoil around the company and its impact on product creation. (I decide not to mention that Yahoo blew its acquisition of the bookmarking site, Delicious, and then sold it.)</p>
<p>Parsey delivers on the delicious scale, noting that Yahoo must have one design experience and yet has a lot of different interfaces. In other words, it cannot be Apple, but it can feel a lot more cohesive.</p>
<p>Irving talks a little bit around the obvious elephant in the room &#8212; the future of Yahoo &#8212; noting that the product staff was trying to focus and forget the storm going on outside.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have dreams about what this company can be,&#8221; says Irving.</p>
<p>You and me both, brother.</p>

<p>Memo to Flipboard, as well as Pulse, CNN&#8217;s Zite and AOL&#8217;s Editions: You might want to make some room in the already-crowded news and social reader space, because you&#8217;re about to get some bigfoot company.</p>
<p>Next Wednesday, according to sources close to the situation, Yahoo will finally officially unveil its offering, called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a>.</p>
<p>And perhaps as early as next week or in the weeks soon after, Google will also weigh in with its version of the genre &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/its-called-google-propeller-and-its-aimed-at-flipboard-and-facebook-too/">code-named Propeller</a> &#8212; which also might be the product&#8217;s name. Another moniker under strong consideration: Currents.</p>
<p>As I have previously reported, Google Propeller is an HTML5 reader for the Apple iPad and Android &#8212; essentially a souped-up version of similar apps such as Flipboard, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">AOL&#8217;s Editions</a>, Zite (which was just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">bought by Time Warner&#8217;s CNN</a>) and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110616/pulse-gets-quicker-with-9m-in-funding/">Pulse</a>. </p>
<p>All these apps are part of the drastically changing habits of media consumers, helping users better navigate numerous social and media feeds &#8212; such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as news sites and more &#8212; using handsome interfaces and touch technologies on tablet devices.</p>
<p>Flipboard, the most prominent and elegant of these offerings, is now available only on the Apple iPad. </p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s traction among elite users, along with its high-level design ethos and strong reviews, is why Google tried to buy the well-funded company last year, sources said.</p>
<p>But Flipboard &#8212; which is backed by some of tech&#8217;s biggest venture players, who have invested <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">more than $60 million at a $200 million valuation</a> &#8212; declined the kind offer.</p>
<p>At the time, sources said, Google told Flipboard execs that if it did not buy the start-up, it planned to do a version of its own.</p>
<p>Hence, after I heard about the product earlier this year, I dubbed it the <em>Flipinator</em>.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/news-reader-traffic-jam-yahoos-livestand-and-googles-propeller-set-to-launch-aiming-at-flipboard/attachment/31664/" rel="attachment wp-att-137672"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/10/31664-285x285.gif" alt="" title="31664" width="285" height="285" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-137672" /></a></p>
<p>According to sources, Propeller will launch with a plethora of media partners, as well as integration into the Google+ social network. The aim of the search giant is to offer media companies easy tools for publishing content on these devices, as well as a better path to monetization.</p>
<p>That is essentially the same plan at Yahoo, which has been working on Livestand with hopes of it being a product that will woo publishers into tight collaboration with the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/02/16/video-demo-livestand-from-yahoo/">Livestand was announced</a> by Yahoo&#8217;s now-fired CEO Carol Bartz in February, at a speech at the World Mobile Congress in Spain.</p>
<p>At the time, Bartz demoed a magazinelike platform that would allow publishers to put up content easily and give users the ability to personalize their selections based on search history and interests.</p>
<p>Bartz called it &#8220;content in context.&#8221; (You can see the demo video below.)</p>
<p>But while Bartz promised the product within three months, development has been slowed by its complex technologies, bugs and the need to sign on publishers. </p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is pushing the product hard as a way for the company to reinvigorate its media products.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how many publishers Yahoo will have at launch, and neither are the distribution plans, beyond flacking it from the Web site and being present in app stores.</p>
<p>Google, on the other hand, has its Android platform to push out Propeller, although it all must work as well on Apple&#8217;s iPad, which is the dominant tablet on the market.</p>
<p>But just because both Yahoo and Google are big companies is by no means a guarantee of success &#8212; think Yahoo 360 or Google Wave or Buzz &#8212; and their lateness might be a hindrance.</p>
<p>And, in fact, other news reader apps are much further along. The leader, Flipboard, has already had four million downloads and 50 partnerships with leading publishers.</p>
<p>It also has started to introduce rich advertising products and, perhaps most importantly, has tight social integration with Twitter and Facebook.</p>
<p>There will be social elements on both Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and Google&#8217;s Propeller. But news reading will be stressed more, making them more like Pulse, a tiny but highly innovative start-up.</p>
<p>Each of the existing apps will presumably compete by adding on more features. Pulse recently added <a href="http://blog.pulse.me/your-news-everywhere-sync-sources-to-your-pul-0">cross-platform, cross-device syncing</a>, while Flipboard is close to unveiling <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/pre-200-million-valuation-flipboards-mike-mccue-at-sxsw-the-full-onstage-video/">an iPhone version</a> it has said it was working on.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Google PR declined comment.</p>

<p>And you thought former Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz could lay into the Yahoo board with some zingers, including the not-used-enough <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110908/bartz-curses-at-yahoo-board-really-um-with-a-curse/">&#8220;doofuses&#8221; insult</a>.</p>
<p>Time to meet Third Point&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110913/as-yahoo-board-meets-tomorrow-investors-ready-thumbscrews/">Daniel Loeb</a>, the smack-tastic hedge fund manager who has bought up a 5.1 percent stake in the Silicon Valley Internet giant and has been hitting the company upside the head with those shares <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110908/activist-yahoo-shareholder-takes-aim-at-board/">since last week</a>, on a seemingly daily basis.</p>
<p>Actually, twice yesterday &#8212; in a morning letter he filed with regulators, and then at an afternoon investor conference.</p>
<p>After trying to entice Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang into throwing Chairman Roy Bostock under the bus, and noting in the letter that Bostock <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110914/yahoo-for-sale-big-bidders-circling-including-marc-andreessen-as-board-pressure-mounts/">hung up on him</a> in a recent phone call, Loeb told the attendees at the Delivering Alpha conference in New York that &#8220;no one wants to work with these clowns on the [Yahoo] board.&#8221; </p>
<p>Also that &#8220;Yahoo had one of the most horrendous management teams&#8221; that Loeb had &#8220;seen in 16 years.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also that Yahoo &#8220;has the same crappy interface and the same stupid logo&#8221; since 2004.</p>
<p>Other than that, Mr. Loeb, how is the Internet site?</p>

<p>Wrote Smith in a <a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_on_the_issues/archive/2011/03/30/adding-our-voice-to-concerns-about-search-in-europe.aspx">blog post</a> late last night:</p>
<p>&#8220;There of course will be some who will point out the irony in today’s filing. Having spent more than a decade wearing the shoe on the other foot with the European Commission, the filing of a formal antitrust complaint is not something we take lightly. This is the first time Microsoft Corporation has ever taken this step.&#8221;</p>
<p>But take it the company did, noting: &#8220;Microsoft is filing a formal complaint with the European Commission as part of the Commission&#8217;s ongoing investigation into whether Google has violated European competition law.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google, no surprise, disagreed, via a statement from a spokesman.</p>
<p>“We&#8217;re not surprised that Microsoft has done this, since one of their subsidiaries was one of the original complainants. For our part, we continue to discuss the case with the European Commission and we&#8217;re happy to explain to anyone how our business works.&#8221;</p>

<p>Microsoft is filing a formal complaint with the European Commission as part of the Commission&#8217;s ongoing investigation into whether Google has violated European competition law. We thought it important to be transparent and provide some information on what we&#8217;re doing and why.</p>
<p>At the outset, we should be among the first to compliment Google for its genuine innovations, of which there have been many over the past decade. As the only viable search competitor to Google in the U.S. and much of Europe, we respect their engineering prowess and competitive drive. Google has done much to advance its laudable mission to &#8220;organize the world’s information,&#8221; but we&#8217;re concerned by a broadening pattern of conduct aimed at stopping anyone else from creating a competitive alternative.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve therefore decided to join a large and growing number of companies registering their concerns about the European search market. By the European Commission’s own reckoning, Google has about 95 percent of the search market in Europe. This contrasts with the United States, where Microsoft serves about a quarter of Americans&#8217; search needs either directly through Bing or through our partnership with Yahoo!.</p>
<p>At Microsoft we&#8217;ve shown that we&#8217;re prepared to work hard and invest literally billions of dollars annually to offer Bing, a search service that many now regard as the most innovative available. But, hard work and innovation need a fair and competitive marketplace in which to thrive, and twice the Department of Justice has intervened to thwart Google’s unlawful conduct from impeding fair competition. In 2008 the DOJ moved to file suit against Google for its unlawful attempt to tie up and set search advertising prices at Yahoo!, causing Google to back down. And last year the DOJ formally objected to Google&#8217;s efforts to monopolize book content, a position affirmed by a federal district court in New York just last week. Unfortunately, even this has not stopped the spread by Google of new and disconcerting practices in the United States.</p>
<p>As troubling as the situation is in United States, it is worse in Europe. That is why our filing today focuses on a pattern of actions that Google has taken to entrench its dominance in the markets for online search and search advertising to the detriment of European consumers.</p>
<p>How does it do this? Google has built its business on indexing and displaying snippets of other organizations&#8217; Web content. It understands as well as anyone that search engines depend upon the openness of the Web in order to function properly, and it’s quick to complain when others undermine this. Unfortunately, Google has engaged in a broadening pattern of walling off access to content and data that competitors need to provide search results to consumers and to attract advertisers.</p>
<p>On PCs it is usually not difficult for people to navigate to any search engine. Google in fact makes this point virtually every time someone raises antitrust concerns about their practices. Their defense ignores the hugely important fact that there are many other important ways that search services compete.  Search engines compete to index the Web as fully as possible so they can generate good search results, they compete to gain advertisers (the source of revenue in this business), and they compete to gain distribution of their search boxes through Web sites. Consumers will not benefit from clicking to alternative sites unless all search engines have a fair opportunity to compete in each of these areas.</p>
<p>Our filing details many instances where Google is impeding competition in these areas. A half-dozen examples below help illustrate some of our concerns.</p>
<p>First, in 2006 Google acquired YouTube&#8211;and since then it has put in place a growing number of technical measures to restrict competing search engines from properly accessing it for their search results. Without proper access to YouTube, Bing and other search engines cannot stand with Google on an equal footing in returning search results with links to YouTube videos and that, of course, drives more users away from competitors and to Google.</p>
<p>Second, in 2010 and again more recently, Google blocked Microsoft&#8217;s new Windows Phones from operating properly with YouTube. Google has enabled its own Android phones to access YouTube so that users can search for video categories, find favorites, see ratings, and so forth in the rich user interfaces offered by those phones. It&#8217;s done the same thing for the iPhones offered by Apple, which doesn’t offer a competing search service.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, Google has refused to allow Microsoft&#8217;s new Windows Phones to access this YouTube metadata in the same way that Android phones and iPhones do. As a result, Microsoft’s YouTube &#8220;app&#8221; on Windows Phones is basically just a browser displaying YouTube&#8217;s mobile Web site, without the rich functionality offered on competing phones. Microsoft is ready to release a high quality YouTube app for Windows Phone. We just need permission to access YouTube in the way that other phones already do, permission Google has refused to provide.</p>
<p>Third, Google is seeking to block access to content owned by book publishers. This was underscored in federal court in New York last week, in the decision involving Google&#8217;s effort to obtain exclusive and unfettered access to the large volume of so-called &#8220;orphan books&#8211;books for which no copyright holder can readily be found. Under Google&#8217;s plan only its search engine would be able to return search results from these books. As the federal court said in rejecting this plan, &#8220;Google&#8217;s ability to deny competitors the ability to search orphan books would further entrench Google’s market power in the online search market.&#8221; This is an important initial step under U.S. law, but it needs to be reinforced by similar positions in Europe and the rest of the world.</p>
<p>Fourth, Google is even restricting its customers&#8217;&#8211;namely, advertisers&#8217;&#8211;access to their own data. Advertisers input large amounts of data into Google&#8217;s ad servers in the course of managing their advertising campaigns. This data belongs to the advertisers: it reflects their decisions about their own business.  But Google contractually prohibits advertisers from using their data in an interoperable way with other search advertising platforms, such as Microsoft&#8217;s adCenter.</p>
<p>This makes it much more costly for Google&#8217;s advertisers to run portions of their campaigns with any competitor, and thus less likely that they will do so. That is a significant problem because most advertisers figure that they have to advertise first with Google. If it&#8217;s too expensive to port their advertising campaign data to competing advertising platforms, many won&#8217;t do it. Competing search engines are left with less relevant ads, and less revenue. And while this restraint isn&#8217;t visible to consumers, its effects are nonetheless felt across the Web. Advertising revenue is the economic propellant fueling the billions of dollars needed for ongoing search investments. By reducing competitors&#8217; ability to attract advertising revenue, this restriction strikes at the heart of a competitive market.</p>
<p>Fifth, this undermining of competition is reflected in concerns that go beyond Google&#8217;s control over content. One of the ways that search engines attract users is through distribution of search boxes through Web sites. Unfortunately, Google contractually blocks leading Web sites in Europe from distributing competing search boxes. It is obviously difficult for competing search engines to gain users when nearly every search box is powered by Google. Google&#8217;s exclusivity terms have even blocked Microsoft from distributing its Windows Live services, such as email and online document storage, through European telecommunications companies because these services are monetized through Bing search boxes.</p>
<p>Finally, we share the concerns expressed by many others that Google discriminates against would-be competitors by making it more costly for them to attain prominent placement for their advertisements. Microsoft has provided the Commission with a considerable body of expert analysis concerning how search engine algorithms work and the competitive significance of promoting or demoting various advertisements.</p>
<p>Over the past year, a growing number of advertisers, publishers, and consumers have expressed to us their concerns about the search market in Europe. They&#8217;ve urged us to share our knowledge of the search market with competition officials.  As they&#8217;ve pointed out, the stakes are high for the European economy. On any given day, more than half of all Europeans use the Internet, and more than 90 percent of them look for information about goods and services on the Web. Indeed, the European Commission&#8217;s Digital Agenda made clear that commerce is moving online, where two-thirds of Europeans begin their shopping process. It&#8217;s therefore critical that search engines and online advertising move forward in an open, fair and competitive manner.</p>
<p>There of course will be some who will point out the irony in today’s filing. Having spent more than a decade wearing the shoe on the other foot with the European Commission, the filing of a formal antitrust complaint is not something we take lightly. This is the first time Microsoft Corporation has ever taken this step. More so than most, we recognize the importance of ensuring that competition laws remain balanced and that technology innovation moves forward.</p>
<p>We readily appreciate that Google should continue to have the freedom to innovate. But it shouldn&#8217;t be permitted to pursue practices that restrict others from innovating and offering competitive alternatives. That’s what it&#8217;s doing now.  And that&#8217;s what we hope European officials will assess and ultimately decide to stop.</p></blockquote>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/honeycomb-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="Honeycomb Android" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3380" />Although <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110202/googles-honeycomb-designer-humans-shouldnt-have-to-do-a-computers-work/">we brought you some of the fun ahead of time</a>, Mobilized is on hand at the Googleplex on Wednesday morning to bring you live coverage of the <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110128/google-to-show-off-honeycomb-next-week/">Honeycomb event</a> starting at 10 am PT.</p>
<p>For those who need a quick recap, Honeycomb, a.k.a. version 3.0 of Android, is <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110201/exclusive-googles-android-design-expert-outlines-the-vision-behind-honeycomb/">designed with tablets in mind</a> and features improved multitouch and notifications, as well as a new user interface and the ability to have applications span multiple panes.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the liveblog, and there&#8217;s a video at the bottom.</p>
<p><strong>10:00 am</strong>: Things are just about to get underway here. Everyone has been let in and is in their seats. Presumably to avoid recent issues, we&#8217;ve been asked not to use wireless hotspots but, thankfully, there is Google-provided Wi-Fi.</p>
<p><strong>10:02 am</strong>: Andy Rubin takes the stage and is welcoming folks. Rubin promises a demo of Motorola Xoom and then we&#8217;re going to hear about the future of Android Market.</p>
<p><strong>10:03 am</strong>: Rubin on Android: It&#8217;s open source. &#8220;We consider ourselves the shepherd of it,&#8221; he said, noting how many cool Android products he saw at last month&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show.</p>
<p>&#8220;With open source, you don&#8217;t really know what is going to happen. All the innovation doesn&#8217;t happen in this building.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:04 am</strong>: Rubin is talking about the central role of the cloud, noting that in the future we&#8217;ll see more integration between phones and tablets and Google TV (which is also based on Android).</p>
<p><strong>10:05 am</strong>: Now up, Hugo Barra, head of Android products, to show off Honeycomb.</p>
<p><strong>10:06 am</strong>: First shots of Honeycomb. The bottom left corner has a home button, a back button and a button that brings up recently used items. The bottom left has a clock and various notifications.</p>
<p>&#8220;The rest of the screen is dedicated to applications,&#8221; Barra says.</p>

<p><strong>10:08 am</strong>: Notifications are designed to be non-intrusive, like on phones, but use the extra real estate to provide a bit more information, such as the photo of the person sending an instant message.</p>
<p>In another example, while a music app is active, one can play or pause music from the notification tray.</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am</strong>: The notification area also provides quick access to settings such as Airplane mode and to lock the screen orientation.</p>
<p>Barra said that existing apps that follow Android guidelines should run well without modification. Demos existing version of Fruit Ninja, developed before Honeycomb, running well on the tablet.</p>
<p><strong>10:11 am</strong>: Of course, Google wants to encourage Honeycomb-specific apps as well. To do that, Google added a number of new tools and concepts, such as fragments, which let apps be split into various panes. Barra is demoing how this works in a Gmail app.</p>

<p><strong>10:12 am</strong>: There&#8217;s also improved drag-and-drop capabilities in Honeycomb, as well as an application bar at the top that brings common application commands to the forefront.</p>
<p><strong>10:14 am</strong>: Barra says that the company spent a lot of time optimizing performance, particularly around 2-D and 3-D graphics.</p>
<p>Existing 2-D graphics code can be hardware accelerated with just a line of code, while a new framework has been added to speed up animations.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also a new engine, called RenderScript, aimed at 3-D graphics. Barra shows this in action in YouTube carousel and turning pages in Google Books.</p>
<p><strong>10:17 am</strong>: Barra also shows 3-D in action in Google Body&#8211;kind of like Google Maps for the human body.</p>

<p><strong>10:21 am</strong>: Demo of new camera app, with new design taking advantage of added screen real estate. </p>
<p>Honeycomb supports video chat natively.</p>

<p>They&#8217;ve added image stabilization to video chat to improve quality and save bandwidth.</p>
<p><strong>10:23 am</strong>: Barra is trying to demo video chat, but can&#8217;t find &#8220;lady killer&#8221; whom he was trying to chat with. Perhaps that user is out, killing ladies.</p>
<p>Decides to chat with his friend Anand instead.</p>
<p>&#8220;Sorry I&#8217;m not lady killer,&#8221; Anand says. &#8220;I&#8217;m not bad with the ladies, though.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am</strong>: Now invites CNN exec to show an app they have built for Honeycomb.</p>
<p><strong>10:25 am</strong>: Louis Gump, VP of mobile, showing new tablet version of its app for Android. It uses fragments to allow users to choose categories, dive in and swipe from one place to another.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is an incredibly immersive experience,&#8221; Gump says. &#8220;Consumers love it.&#8221;</p>
<p>The app includes audio and live video.</p>
<p><strong>10:28 am</strong>: It adds iReport for the tablet, allowing people to view user-generated content as well as capture their own photos and videos and upload them from within the app.</p>

<p><strong>10:34 am</strong>: Release of Android market Web store. It&#8217;s the new way for users to get applications on their devices. Previously had to do so only from the Android device. Now users can go to browser.</p>
<p>From the Web, users can purchase and have the app installed directly on their Android devices.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: For those who had &#8220;cloud-based Android Market&#8221; in their Honeycomb Bingo, please mark your square now. (Google Music, anyone?)</p>

<p><strong>10:37 am</strong>: Allows you to install app on one or all of one&#8217;s compatible Android devices. Moving to the Web allows more graphics and a better sense of the Apps, Yerga says.</p>
<p>He demos buying an app, putting it &#8220;on his Google corporate credit card.&#8221;</p>
<p>Android Market Web site also makes it easier for friends to share and recommend apps. Email can take a link direct to that app&#8217;s page in the store.</p>
<p>In addition to screenshots, developers can post a YouTube video of their app in action.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also a &#8220;tweet&#8221; button for each app that creates a deep link to that app in the market.</p>
<p>If you are on a computer, the link takes you to a Web market; from an Android device it will take you to the built-in Android Market client.</p>
<p><strong>10:43 am</strong>: Okay, if you had &#8220;automagically&#8221; in your Honeycomb Bingo card, you can mark that one as well.</p>
<p>Next time, perhaps Mobilized will make up actual Bingo cards.</p>
<p><strong>10:44 am</strong>: Developers will also have the option to price their app for different currencies. Currently, apps are priced in one currency and then converted.</p>
<p>This will be rolled out in phases, Yerga says.</p>
<p>(Still no &#8220;lady killer,&#8221; Yerga notes.)</p>
<p><strong>10:45 am</strong>: Support for in-app purchases also coming to Android via a new software development kit.</p>
<p><strong>10:47 am</strong>: A Disney Mobile rep is up talking about its Android plans. &#8220;That number is about to get a lot bigger,&#8221; the rep says, noting that the company is bringing Radio Disney and two other apps to Android.</p>
<p>Also bringing Jelly Car, a physics game, as well as Tap Tap Revenge, the company&#8217;s biggest mobile title.</p>
<p>The company waited for in-app purchases to be available on Android before porting Tap Tap Revenge, says Disney Mobile exec Bart Decrem.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am</strong>: That allows you to, say, download the latest track from Bruno Mars, who is apparently a really big deal. (Mobilized is old and has to be told who is big these days.)</p>
<p><strong>10:53 am</strong>: Yerga is back. Developer code being released for in-app purchases today, though Google has been testing with a few publishers.</p>
<p>In-app purchases will be released for customers before the end of the quarter, Yerga says.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mike Matas, the designer known for <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/05/07/21/delicious_monster_co_founder_joins_apple_interface_team.html">joining Apple</a> at age 19 after creating the media management tool Delicious Library, today launched a new start-up called <a href="http://www.pushpoppress.com/">Push Pop Press</a>.</p>
<p>Push Pop Press will be a digital book maker, with its first titles coming to iPad and iPhone later this year, according to its Web site.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3134" title="PushPopPress" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/PushPopPress-275x210.png" alt="" width="275" height="210" />The San Francisco-based company intends to allow users to &#8220;explore photos, videos, music, maps, and interactive graphics, all through a new physics-based multi-touch user interface.&#8221;</p>
<p>Matas designed <a href="http://www.mikematas.com/#!2Rs/1QcF/ui_design/push_pop_press">photo and map products at Apple</a>, and left the company in 2009 after serving for four years. According to his <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/michael-matas/21/b3b/a53">LinkedIn</a> profile, he has been working on Push Pop Press since Feb. 2010. His partners in the effort are Kimon Tsinteris, who was formerly a senior engineer on the Apple iPhone team, and Austin Sarner, formerly an independent Mac developer who created software such as <a href="http://appzapper.com/">AppZapper</a> and <a href="http://discoapp.com/">Disco</a>.</p>
<p>Push Pop Press <a href="http://twitter.com/pushpoppress/the-push-pop-press-team/members#">appears</a> to be partnered with the New York book publisher <a href="http://melcher.com/">Melcher Media</a>.</p>
<p>We contacted Matas for comment this evening but have not heard back yet.</p>
<p>Incidentally, exploring the new frontier of digital books has also attracted other Apple alumni. Another start-up in the space, <a href="http://www.inkling.com/">Inkling</a>, was founded by Matt MacInnis, who had spent eight years at Apple, where his duties included managing its international education efforts.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google is planning an event next week to show off the inner workings of Honeycomb, the next version of Android that is optimized to work on tablets and other devices, Mobilized has learned.<br />

The software, which was first shown off at the <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> conference last year, is being built into products starting next month with the arrival of Motorola&#8217;s Xoom. T-Mobile&#8217;s LG tablet is also expected to follow shortly thereafter. </p>
<p>In addition to a brief onstage demo by Android chief Andy Rubin, Google has posted a video showing a bit of Honeycomb in action, but Wednesday&#8217;s event is designed as a deeper dive into the inner workings of the operating system, which Google is positioning as the biggest change to Android&#8217;s interface since the debut of the operating system.</p>
<p>At the event, which will take place on Wednesday in Mountain View, Google will have hands-on demos, and Google&#8217;s worker bees will be on hand to demonstrate various pieces of the operating system.</p>
<p>With Honeycomb, Google is aiming to make Android better suited to a wider array of devices over time, but <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101207/backstage-at-d-mobile-googles-andy-rubin-talks-tablet-music/">most immediately for tablets</a>. Among the changes are an elimination of dependance on hardware buttons, as well as the ability to show information in multiple panes.</p>

<p>For data nerds everywhere, the pinnacle of numerical navel-gazing has, at least since 2005, been Nicholas Felton&#8217;s beautifully designed &#8220;Annual Reports&#8221; on the numbers behind his personal behavior.</p>
<p>He has meticulously recorded, quantified, analyzed and laid out all manner of data from his life in a series that riffs on the annual reports that businesses issue to their shareholders.</p>
<p>Instead of earnings and capital expenditure statements, <a href="http://feltron.com/">Felton&#8217;s reports</a> are full of numbers like cost-per-mile-run at the gym and how many hours he worked from home versus office.</p>
<p>And now, of course, there&#8217;s an app for that.</p>
<p><a href="http://daytum.com/">Daytum</a>, the name under which Felton and his co-creator Ryan Case have released what is essentially a consumer-focused designers&#8217; portfolio project, previously existed only as a Web app to help users track and organize the everyday data of their lives.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://daytum.com/about/iphone_app">Apple iPhone version</a>, released on New Year&#8217;s Eve, puts the sans-serif-chic data collection interface into your pocket and out into the world, where life&#8217;s data actually happens.</p>
<p>So, what is it good for?</p>
<p>Felton and Case hope that the app, plus a forthcoming API to their Daytum Web application, will enable more people to see their own data in a new way.</p>
<p>The app is designed to help you begin tagging the pieces of data that you&#8217;d like to track.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no automated input. Just tap the screen to create a category of data you are interested in tracking.</p>
<p>Add the category &#8220;Lunch&#8221; and then set up some recurring fields under lunch. &#8220;Sandwich,&#8221; for example.</p>
<p>Then, anytime you eat a sandwich, or anything else, for lunch, you can quickly mark it down.</p>
<p>The app allows you to add data points as they happen, even if you don&#8217;t have an Internet connection right then.</p>

<p>How else would you track how much money you give to subway musicians each month?</p>
<p>So, we ask again, what&#8217;s it good for?</p>
<p>Whether or not you ate a sandwich today, Felton admitted, is not all that interesting. He claims the data of life becomes more compelling in the aggregate.</p>
<p>Maybe you&#8217;d like to know how many miles you walked this month, or how your mood correlated with the weather, or if you or your partner changed more diapers this year.</p>
<p>It might not seem like groundbreaking stuff, but the data of a life starts to tell a story when laid out, clean and collected, in Felton&#8217;s various visualizations.</p>
<p>Felton said that data&#8217;s value comes on may levels.</p>
<p>&#8220;It helps you see and share all kinds of stuff about your life&#8211;it can be really interesting to people who know you,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Digitizing the human analog data of the world is certainly a growth area in tech.</p>
<p>Tools have emerged to find out when users are awake via their tweets, there has been major growth in mobile purchase tracking and patents are being awarded to companies that offer deals based on where a person goes.</p>
<p>If the renaissance of this arena is still years off, it might be the perfect time to try to get ahead of the curve and tap the brains of people who are already thinking like it&#8217;s 2015.</p>
<p>Felton has spent the last half-decade staring at and organizing his own data and, more recently, the data of others via Daytum.</p>
<p>I asked him what wisdom he might have gained from his unusual pursuit.</p>
<p>&#8220;People seem to record binary items really well&#8211;things like one drink, or watching one TV show,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Recording gets harder and less regular when it&#8217;s things without a set size or quantity, like when they ate a meal.&#8221;</p>

<p>When I asked if he felt suspicious of the businesses that were gathering his data, he came back with something a little deeper.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think the walling up of data by businesses is really a missed opportunity, not cause for suspicion,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Someone knows how long it has been since I called my mother, but I can&#8217;t be certain. That information could be valuable to me.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added: &#8220;Businesses seem to be stuck on the idea of loyalty rewards being about points.&#8221;</p>
<p>For Felton, data can be its own reward.</p>
<p>His next data-driven project might bring the whole idea home.</p>
<p>Felton&#8217;s father passed away in September, and he&#8217;s decided to postpone his 2010 report for something larger and more personal.</p>
<p>So, he will release a single report on all of his father&#8217;s 81 years based on data gathered from years of slides, travel postcards, &#8220;FasTrak&#8221; auto toll payments and myriad other sources.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have gotten to know things about him that I never knew while he was alive,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve learned that he was much better at maths and sciences than English back in school. I can actually quantify that.&#8221;</p>
<p>But the question on the minds of so many emerging data-driven businesses is: How well can we know people, our users and consumers based on their data?</p>
<p>Finding that answer seems to be Felton&#8217;s personal mission. And in the spirit of his other reports, he will share it, and the tools he uses to find it, with the world.</p>

<p>Taking Walt&#8217;s top spot this year was none other than Apple&#8217;s iPad. For a 1.0 product, the iPad was amazing. With the new iOS 4.2 operating system and its huge selection of apps, the iPad continues to stay ahead of the competition.</p>
<p>High-speed 4G networks in the United States took the second spot. As the world goes more mobile, the availability of faster networks is critical. Today, 3G networks are bursting at the seams, and the promise of these networks will be something to watch closely in 2011.</p>
<p>Tied for third were the Samsung Galaxy S and the Apple iPhone 4. The Galaxy S is representative of the powerful force that Android has become within the smartphone marketplace. Despite no longer being the only game in town and all the initial controversy over its antenna, the iPhone 4 is still the best overall smartphone, according to Walt.</p>
<p>Turning his attention to his worst reviewed products for 2010, Walt gave the Dell Streak tablet a thumbs-down. Calling the Streak a tweener, he believed this Android device was too big to be a phone yet too small to be a tablet.</p>
<p>While no company got it right when it came to integrating the Internet with the television, Google TV was certainly not ready for prime time. Walt felt that it was basically a geek product, with a confusing user interface and clumsy keyboard options. Finally, the TiVo Premiere was another product that failed to meet Walt&#8217;s expectations. As a TiVo fan and user, he felt TiVo Premiere, with its cluttered interface, shared Google TV&#8217;s shortcomings. Simply put, the execution was not there, and the price was too high.</p>
<p>Walt did stress that these products might be great someday, but 2010 was not their year.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thanks to the popularity of Facebook, it&#8217;s easy to assume that all social networks are designed primarily to connect friends with one another. But many of these networks—think Twitter, Yelp and  LinkedIn—aren&#8217;t focused on that. Instead, they provide information from strangers, business contacts and group postings on a variety of topics. Myspace is now also shifting in this direction after Facebook decisively overtook it as the most popular social network.</p>
<p>Last month, the company rolled out a revamped version of Myspace, which is owned by News Corp., publisher of the Wall Street Journal. I&#8217;ve been testing it to see what has changed and if it&#8217;s worth using. Its interface is cleaner than the old version of Myspace and I found it easy to navigate. It&#8217;s also inviting for non-members or people who&#8217;ve long-since given up on Myspace. But I can&#8217;t definitely say I like it enough to add it to my large list of social networks.</p>

<p>Step one of this site&#8217;s rehab was a new focus. Myspace (<a href="http://myspace.com">myspace.com</a>) was redesigned to serve as a source of information about entertainment. People who use it can follow five categories—TV, music, movies, celebrities and comedy—that include more than 100,000 topics. News about these topics comes from  sites all over the Web and is arranged on users&#8217; home pages to show loads of information at a glance. A Discovery tab at the top of the page shows content related to trends on Myspace makes suggestions based on a user&#8217;s preferences and taste. A spokesman said the Myspace topics can be expanded, but for now, if you&#8217;re fonder of, say, books, theater or hard news, Myspace won&#8217;t be a good fit. </p>
<p>Step two for Myspace included making nice with its old competitor. It now works with Facebook Connect to pull in people&#8217;s Facebook &#8220;likes&#8221; and interests, which automatically generate customized Myspace pages for new users. </p>
<p>The final step of the Myspace redesign was its emphasis on music. The site still contains one of the largest Web music catalogs that plays full versions of songs for anyone who visits Myspace. New versions of band profile pages look more organized. And all artists with band profiles will have ReverbNation&#8217;s FanReach email product integrated into their profile to help them create targeted email campaigns for fans.</p>
<p>Was Myspace&#8217;s rehabilitation worth the effort? I&#8217;ve been using it for a week and it has taught me a lot more than I knew about things I care about. I had no idea that one of my favorite TV shows, TNT&#8217;s &#8220;The Closer,&#8221; recently said that 2011 would be its last season. Nor did I know that Anthony Bourdain blogs about his role as a judge on &#8220;Top Chef Masters.&#8221; These items and others appeared on my Home page after I performed the process that the Myspace site refers to as a Facebook Mashup.</p>
<p>The Facebook Mashup does a few things automatically for you, in addition to generating a Myspace page filled with topic-related news. A playlist is created in the Music section of your page that contains artists whom you &#8220;like&#8221; on Facebook (or whom you indicated while setting up an account). And the Videos section of the Myspace page will reflect your tastes in a list of Followed Channels related to your Facebook preferences.</p>
<p>The Home page can be seen in one of three views—List, Grid or Play—and icons at the top of the screen let users toggle among  these views. My favorite was Grid View in the Full Grid View format, visible by clicking a small box at the top of the page. </p>
<p>Some of the content displayed on my Home page was mixed up. For example, a tile representing the story about Mr. Bourdain&#8217;s blog (originally posted on <a href="http://Celebrifi.com">Celebrifi.com</a>) displayed with it a photo of actor Tom Cruise, who wasn&#8217;t mentioned in that post. Another Tom, Tom Colicchio, chef and a &#8220;Top Chef Masters&#8221; judge, was mentioned in the post, but that doesn&#8217;t explain the mix-up. </p>
<p>Anything that falls into the 100,000 plus topics of Myspace&#8217;s realm can be found via a search box in the top right corner of the page, but this box is confusingly labeled, &#8220;Search People.&#8221; Though Myspace still allows users to search for and friend one another, the label on this search box is puzzling, given the greater reach of the site. </p>
<p>You can watch video content from <a href="http://Hulu.com">Hulu.com</a> (of which News Corp. is part owner) without jumping to a new page. And videos also come from other sources like TMZ and the NFL.</p>
<p>Users can earn recognition badges—icons that show up on their page—for their involvement on Myspace, and can become curators of topics, awarded on the basis of users&#8217; involvement and how much other people respond to their activity. </p>
<p>This week, a Myspace mobile app was launched in Apple&#8217;s App Store, and an Android app is due out next year.</p>
<p>Myspace successfully reinvented itself in a way that could very well get people using it again, but Facebook&#8217;s more personalized social network may be more valuable than a rich library of entertainment content.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For years now, Jeff Han has been working on large-screen multitouch displays.</p>
<p>Han and his company, <a href="http://perceptivepixel.com/">Perceptive Pixel</a>, are best known for creating the giant touch wall that John King and others at CNN use to break down elections.</p>
<p>While Apple, Microsoft and others have targeted consumers, Perceptive Pixel has <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-20020465-56.html">focused on niche professional markets, especially the defense and government sector</a>.</p>
<p>But, after years of watching the small touchscreen device market from the sidelines, Han said he thinks he is pretty close to creating his first products that will run on those devices.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mobile is interesting,&#8221; he said in an interview last month at his New York offices (in the Manhattan building that Google is buying, with the amazing roof view seen below). &#8220;How can you ignore a billion devices being sold every year?&#8221;</p>
<p>Han said there is a reason he has stayed focused on the high end of the market.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have a personal bias,&#8221; he told Mobilized. &#8220;I want computers to be functional, not just playful.&#8221;</p>
<p>The modern tablet, he said, is the first consumer device that has enough pixels and the precision sensors to potentially be of interest to Perceptive Pixel. In particular, Han said he is intrigued by the idea of using tablets to allow meeting participants to interact with a nearby larger touchscreen that might be in use by someone leading a meeting.<br />

&#8220;We&#8217;re looking at mobile and slate devices as a way to tie into this family of collaboration [products],&#8221; he said, noting that&#8217;s where Perceptive Pixel is spending its energy when it comes to mobile, as opposed to coming up with some killer app that works only on smaller screens. &#8220;There are a lot of smart people creating mobile apps.&#8221;</p>
<p>Han said his first mobile efforts should come out early next year&#8211;in the first quarter or early in the second quarter, though he wouldn&#8217;t give more specifics.</p>
<p>Whatever Perceptive Pixel ends up doing in the tablet space, Han said his plan is to eventually have it support multiple operating systems, though Han said the company will probably only qualify certain devices. So far, he said, Apple&#8217;s iOS and the iPad seem best suited to the applications he has in mind, while the real-time touch performance on Android has certain issues.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not going to just let it run on anything out there,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Some of them just can&#8217;t guarantee a good user interface.&#8221;</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After his <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101207/live-at-dive-hps-jon-rubinstein/">onstage talk at <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong></a>, Jon Rubinstein, head of HP&#8217;s Palm unit, sat down with Mobilized to talk more about webOS&#8211;its past, present and future.</p>

In the interview, he talked a lot about what had changed in the five months since HP completed its purchase of Palm. A bunch of Palm workers have left, but Rubinstein noted that the unit has made more than 70 new hires and brought over more than 200 people from HP. The company has also shifted its focus to include tablets and printers and other types of mobile devices&#8211;something the underfunded standalone company wasn&#8217;t even considering doing.</p>
<p>&#8220;We were looking strictly at phones,&#8221; Rubinstein acknowledged, while maintaining that the webOS itself is designed to scale.</p>
<p>Here is an edited transcript of our conversation:</p>
<p><strong>Mobilized: When you guys were a standalone company, were you focused on phones? Or were you already looking at tablets and other kinds of devices?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: We were looking strictly at phones. We were a small company, but when we designed webOS we designed it to be scalable. To build a great tablet experience on top of it is fairly straightforward. It is work&#8211;we&#8217;ve got to update the user interface and there are some other things we have got to do.</p>
<p>But the basic system is absolutely scalable to a tablet. While we weren&#8217;t working on it, that was one of the real attractions that Palm had for HP, that they could rapidly expand into a variety of different devices.</p>
<p><strong>Obviously their long-term interest isn&#8217;t just in tablets and phones even?</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: They&#8217;ve stated they are moving their printers to webOS. We&#8217;re busy working with the guys from the printer division to do that. There are other things going on within various parts of HP that are looking at using webOS or building on top of webOS.</p>
<p>The Labs people are doing some really exciting things. They are very excited to have webOS to build on top of.</p>
<p><strong>What are some of the considerations that come in when you are going to build for a printer or a tablet that just weren&#8217;t needed when you were just a phone?</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: Well, because webOS was a 1.0 operating system, frankly we hadn&#8217;t paid enough attention to machine dependencies. We were doing each product in its entirety. We did have to worry about another division using the code or even having more form factors than a handful at any point in time. So, one of the things we are doing right now is getting webOS to be much more machine-independent.</p>
<p>We were clearly very interested in enterprise, but it wasn&#8217;t on as fast a track as we are now. We already had a variety of enterprise capabilities. WebOS 2.0 has got VPN and other enterprise-class features. But we&#8217;re significantly accelerating our enterprise capabilities so we can utilize HP&#8217;s huge sales channel in the enterprise</p>
<p><strong>You talked about webOS scaling. Is there any reason it couldn&#8217;t be powering a low-end notebook?</strong></p>
<p>I think a netbook is fine. I don&#8217;t really want to get into the notebook business. We&#8217;ll leave that to Microsoft. The notebook business is partnering closely with Microsoft. We&#8217;re not focused on that at all. Our plan isn&#8217;t to subsume what Microsoft [does]. That&#8217;s not our goal. There is a very, very strong business on both the notebook and desktop space&#8211;and server space&#8211;that&#8217;s Windows-based and that makes sense.</p>
<p><strong>With the HP acquisition you got a lot more resources, but you lost a lot of the people that built webOS.</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: Yes and no. There&#8217;s a large group of us that built webOS. Clearly, anytime you go through a transition like this you are going to lose some people along the way. We lost some. We&#8217;ve also been hiring a lot. Since we closed the deal we have hired over 70 people. Two hundred-plus people from HP have joined us, and other divisions at HP are busy working on helping us make webOS successful. So while yes, we lost a few people along the way, we gained a lot of people. </p>
<p><strong>You mentioned on stage you have a variety of products coming next year in several shapes and sizes&#8211;phones, tablets. How important will next generations be for some of those products?</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: We&#8217;re big believers that the more bandwidth the better. I am very excited to get to LTE and HSDPA+ [two faster cellular networks]. We have some really interesting visions on where webOS can go as you get more and more bandwidth.</p>
<p>You were there the other night <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101130/palm-qualcomm-chiefs-weigh-wireless-future/">when [Qualcomm CEO] Paul [Jacobs] and I were talking</a>. The two big issues, we think, are battery life and bandwidth.</p>
<p>More and more bandwidth will enable more and more things that today we cannot even imagine. And remember, we designed webOS to integrate tightly with the cloud. My personal view is that<br />
it&#8217;s not about applications. Applications actually [will] bifurcate to where part of them runs on the device and part of them runs on the cloud.</p>
<p><strong>Are you spending a lot of time thinking about how to synch the data that lives in a webOS device with all of HP&#8217;s other products?</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: We certainly think that a unifying experience around webOS and the ability to access your cloud data across a variety of devices is absolutely crucial</p>
<p><strong>A lot of data is going to be on laptops and desktops. Do you need to build a cloud device to have webOS talk to them?</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: Stay tuned.</p>
<p><strong>How do you get the developers you need to create webOS apps?</strong></p>
<p>We have a lot of really interesting ways to develop for webOS. It&#8217;s very easy to develop for, and people like developing for it. We are getting a whole new generation of developers.</p>
<p>We had this developer conference in New York. If you look at the audience, a lot of them were under 17 and they were making enough money selling applications to come from wherever they were&#8211;they weren&#8217;t from New York&#8211;to bring one of their parents or both of their parents to come to the developer conference.</p>
<p><strong>And to grow your share of the big-time application developers in mobile. Do you think it&#8217;s just a scale question, and if you guys can sell more devices you will get them?</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: We have doubled our application base since, from sometime around the acquisition close until now</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve got, and it depends how you count it, 5,000 to 6,000 applications&#8230;.If you look at the Android store, a lot of that is crapware. We&#8217;ve focused on delivering quality. We are going to add a lot more stuff over time as well, because obviously there&#8217;s a lot of competition about the number of apps. But at the end of the day they don&#8217;t use 300,000 apps&#8211;they use that dozen apps that are important to them. We need to make sure we have that dozen apps for a broad set of customers.</p>
<p><strong>But you are not there today?</strong></p>
<p>Rubinstein: We&#8217;re not there today. I would say we are well on our way. Obviously we kind of stalled for a bit going through the acquisition.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/Acquisitions_CLAW.jpg" alt="" title="Acquisitions_CLAW" width="350" height="258" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-53025" />Hoping to shake its reputation for aging or otherwise unappealing mobile interfaces, Research in Motion is bringing in some new design talent. <a href="http://blogs.blackberry.com/2010/12/rim-welcomes-tat/">The company has acquired</a> <a href="http://www.tat.se/blog/tat-to-join-a-larger-tribe/">The Astonishing Tribe (TAT)</a>,  the Swedish design house behind <a href="http://www.tat.se/blog/android-launch-of-htc-g1/">the original Android interface</a> as well as <a href="http://www.tat.se/videos/">some other impressive concept UIs</a>, like Velvet and Augmented ID, which uses facial recognition software to associate social information with anyone viewed through a smartphone camera (see video embeds below). </p>
<p>A small but brilliant acquisition that should give RIM some much-needed UI design heft as it further polishes its PlayBook tablet and whatever other next-gen QNX-based smartphones it has in the pipeline. For RIM, whose devices have seemed perpetually a generation behind the latest iPhone and Android handsets, TAT’s acumen could be just the thing to strengthen its competitive position and further the efforts of <a href="http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/RIM-Hires-ExMicrosoft-and-Apple-Designer-Don-Lindsay-815949/">Don Lindsay</a>, its new VP of User Experience (a former Microsoft and Apple hire)&#8211;assuming RIM&#8217;s willing to take some guidance.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Of all the set-top boxes designed to bring online and computer content to your TV, perhaps the best known is Apple TV. But, unlike its maker&#8217;s other products, Apple TV hasn&#8217;t caught on in a big way. In fact, Apple CEO Steve Jobs calls it a &#8220;hobby.&#8221;</p>

<p>Still, the company isn&#8217;t giving up. This fall it brought out a radically revamped Apple TV at a much lower price—$99, down from $229—and with a different philosophy. While earlier versions contained a hard disk and allowed you to purchase and store movies, music and TV shows, the new Apple TV is all about streaming and renting. It can&#8217;t store content, although, like its predecessors, it can transmit to your TV screen content stored on your networked home computers.</p>
<p>Perhaps the coolest feature of the new Apple TV is that it allows you to wirelessly beam video and audio from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to the TV screen. A new feature called AirPlay in the latest software on these portable devices makes this possible. So, if you have a video or photos on, say, an iPad, you can just tap an icon on its screen to view them on a TV via Apple TV instead of on the device&#8217;s smaller screen. (AirPlay also works wirelessly from the free iTunes software on PCs and Macs.)</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the new Apple TV, including trying out AirPlay using various devices, and found that it performs as advertised. It has a clean, easy interface, does a great job of streaming content from your own computers, and it allows you to rent TV shows at just 99 cents an episode. It&#8217;s even almost invisible next to your TV—a 4-inch-square black box less than an inch tall. And setup is easy.</p>
<p>But it has some significant downsides. The most important of these is a very limited selection of Internet video sources. If you want a set-top box that allows you to watch a wide range of video from the Web, Apple TV isn&#8217;t it. </p>
<p>Apple TV is now essentially a modestly priced adapter that streams video, audio and photos to your HDTV from three main sources: your own computers, Apple&#8217;s iTunes service plus a few other online sources, and content on your portable Apple devices using AirPlay.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the polar opposite of the new Google TV, which tries to encompass the entire Internet but is too complicated for mainstream users and costs hundreds of dollars. Apple is offering much less variety in content sources, but with a much simpler interface and a tiny remote with just seven buttons, versus the keyboard or minikeyboard used with Google TV.</p>
<p>Apple TV is still tied heavily to the company&#8217;s own iTunes service. The new model now also offers Netflix, which is nicely integrated into Apple&#8217;s user interface, but is very common on other set-top boxes, including the less expensive Roku models. YouTube is accessible from the new device, though it was present on the older model as well. The device can&#8217;t deliver other video services, nor is it designed to bring up Web pages on your TV.</p>
<p>And, even within Apple&#8217;s own iTunes service, which is Apple TV&#8217;s source for a la carte rental of TV shows and movies, the content is limited. For its 99-cent TV show rentals, the device mainly offers programs from ABC, Disney, Fox, PBS and the BBC. If your favorite show is on NBC, CBS or many other networks, you can&#8217;t rent it on Apple TV, nor can you get to the Web to view it. Alas, even within those networks, some of the programs are old and I couldn&#8217;t find some popular shows, like &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; on ABC or &#8220;American Idol&#8221; on Fox. (Fox, like The Wall Street Journal, is owned by News Corp.) </p>
<p>You can still buy TV shows from the excluded networks, or shows unavailable for rental, on your computers and stream them to the TV via Apple TV, but that is a more complicated process.</p>

<p>Apple claims the largest selection of high-definition movies online, and says many are available the same day they appear on DVD. Movie rentals start at $2.99 for standard-definition versions and $3.99 for high definition, though many are $4.99. Both movies and TV shows can be kept for 30 days, but, once you start playing them, the clock starts on a short window before they expire. In the case of movies, the window is 24 hours; for TV shows, it&#8217;s 48 hours. You can pause and resume, or watch them repeatedly, within those windows.</p>
<p>In my tests, video and audio quality were excellent. Programs started rapidly, and I never saw any stuttering or buffering delays. Like the older Apple TV models, the new one did a very good job of streaming to the TV content from both PCs and Macs running iTunes on my home network. In fact, the process of setting this up has been made simpler. Watching slideshows of family photos was simple and rewarding.</p>
<p>Searching for a TV show or movie was tedious, because it requires you to peck out letters from an onscreen keyboard with the little remote. (This is why Google uses a keyboard, but that isn&#8217;t a welcome device in many living rooms.) However, there&#8217;s an alternative. Apple offers a free iPhone and iPad app that can control the Apple TV, and it has a built in virtual keyboard for much faster searching.</p>
<p>AirPlay worked well in my tests. I tried it on both an iPad and an iPhone, and was easily able to switch a video or song from the device itself to the Apple TV, and thus, to the TV screen and speakers. This requires merely clicking on an icon that looks like a wide-screen TV with an arrow beneath it, and then selecting &#8220;Apple TV&#8221; as a destination. </p>
<p>I also tried AirPlay on both a Mac and Windows laptop using the latest version of iTunes, and it worked fine. On all the AirPlay-equipped devices, you can also multitask. Once you&#8217;ve started beaming a video to the Apple TV, you can do other things on the originating device without interrupting the video. For instance, as I write this paragraph in Microsoft Word, I am watching a video beamed to my TV via AirPlay from iTunes on my laptop.</p>
<p>But AirPlay has some limitations. On the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch it will only beam video to the Apple TV from Apple&#8217;s own Video, iPod and Photos apps, plus the YouTube app. On computers, it only works with iTunes. Some third-party apps on the hand-held devices can use it with audio, though not video.</p>
<p>Also, switching the video stream to the Apple TV can take a few seconds, during which the video keeps playing, so you often have to rewind.</p>
<p>Overall, Apple TV is a reasonably priced, well-designed device. It is especially attractive for viewing videos and photos from your computers, and Apple devices, on your TV. But it doesn&#8217;t deliver most Internet video sources, or even all online network programs. </p>

<p>Palm-CEO-turned-HP-exec Jon Rubinstein and Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs faced off with Kara Swisher of <strong>All Things Digital</strong> at a Churchill Club event last night in an entertaining discussion on the future of mobile tech.</p>
<p>If you missed the live video feed of the event, check back with us&#8211;we&#8217;re working to repost the video. For those who want to read text, here is my liveblog of the event.</p>
<p><strong>6:48 pm PT</strong>: We&#8217;re just finishing dinner. It was a chicken in some sort of puff pastry. Nothing is happening onstage, as if that wasn&#8217;t clear by the fact I am describing the meal. I think they will get started around 7:15 or so.</p>
<p><strong>7:10 pm:</strong> Just about ready to go, with intros going on now. (And I just stole Kara&#8217;s seat at the head table.)</p>
<p>Kara: They&#8217;re both guys. Paul is taller and they work in tech.</p>
<p><strong>7:14 pm:</strong> The plan is to talk about the future, but the event begins with a trip down memory lane as Jacobs holds up the Qualcomm PDQ&#8211;arguably the first smartphone combining a cellphone and Palm Pilot. For those who don&#8217;t remember, it it was bigger than a Palm Pilot and a huge phone strapped together.</p>
<p><strong> 7:20 pm:</strong> Digital device history continues. We&#8217;ve traced the last decade in digital devices, from the iPod through the Treo and iPhone. Don&#8217;t forget ringtones and cellphone bowling, Jacobs reminds us, referring to the Brew operating environment that Qualcomm developed.</p>
<p>The iPhone changed everything, Jacobs says, because it showed that the phone makers just weren&#8217;t putting enough work into the phone&#8217;s user interface.</p>
<p><strong> 7:28 pm:</strong> Talk is shifting to where we are today. What are the key things that are shifting? User interfaces, touch, etc. &#8220;The other things we are seeing is all of our lives are moving into the cloud,&#8221; Rubinstein says. On the limitation side, Jacobs points to the limitations of bandwidth: &#8220;We don&#8217;t have enough spectrum right now,&#8221; Jacobs says, adding that the industry and government are working on it. &#8216;We are just going to have to be more creative about how we get content to the devices.&#8221;</p>
<p>The other big limitation, Jacobs says, is battery life. You can do all this cool stuff on your phone, but then the battery dies three-quarters of the way through the day. He puts in a plug for Mirasol&#8211;Qualcomm&#8217;s low-power display technology.</p>
<p>Rubinstein concurs that battery and bandwidth are the two biggest issues. &#8220;Battery technology has not progressed at the same rate as all of the other things we are trying to do,&#8221; Rubinstein says.</p>
<p><strong> 7:38 pm:</strong> What about all the operating systems out there, Kara asks. Rubinstein: &#8220;There&#8217;s plenty of room in the market for multiple systems,&#8221; he says, adding it won&#8217;t be like PCs, where one operating system dominates. &#8220;It&#8217;s just different today.&#8221;</p>
<p>Rubinstein says it&#8217;s still the infancy of the major transition. Put on the spot to rank the operating systems, Rubinstein says that clearly Apple and Android are going gangbusters. The battle, he says, is for who is going to be No. 3. &#8220;We&#8217;d sure like to be that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jacobs: &#8220;I agree. It&#8217;s very early days to be calling winners and losers.&#8221; He sees pretty wide diversity of operating systems, at least for the next five years, unless the operators really clamp down. Even then, there are some alternate distribution channels emerging. Either way, Qualcomm&#8217;s in good shape as an arms dealer, he points out.</p>
<p><strong>7:45 pm:</strong> Discussion of carriers. While they are immensely powerful, Rubinstein says they won&#8217;t be the only distribution channel for every wireless device. &#8220;They are not all going to go through the carriers,&#8221; Rubinstein says.</p>
<p>More and more screens will emerge, Rubinstein says. If I fast-forward enough years, he says, the walls are going to be big displays capable of talking to other devices.</p>
<p>Jacobs notes that people will be able to use their device with any tool they have access to, from a big screen to a headset to a wireless keyboard. He says Qualcomm is working on a technology that would allow wireless headsets that could work in-ear like a hearing aid.</p>
<p><strong>7:50 pm:</strong> Talk about some outlandish things. Rubinstein has already thrown out the idea of a headset in your pillow. Rubinstein points out that there will be a lot of sensors, pointing to the Nike+iPod as a really early example of what we can expect a lot more of.</p>
<p><strong>7:55 pm:</strong> Augmented reality is also going to be big, the panelists agree. &#8220;The (StarTrek) tricorder is going to happen,&#8221; Jacobs says. Health care will also tap mobile technology, particularly in emerging countries where there is less regulation, carriers are trusted and there are fewer skilled health care providers available. &#8220;It&#8217;s a very efficient way to manage health,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Over the next few years we will see this happen,&#8221; he says. Eventually it will come back to developed markets, but today there is too much legacy and too much regulation in places like the U.S.</p>
<p><strong>8:10 pm:</strong> Sorry for the delay&#8211;we were fixing some issues with the video coding, which hopefully should be solved now. Anyway, Rubinstein and Jacobs have been throwing out things that they expect in the next five years.</p>
<p>Jacobs&#8217;s list includes digital networked textbooks, cellphones as gateways for health care, as well as using augmented reality to translate all the signs and menus in a foreign country.</p>
<p>Rubinstein and Jacobs both see a digital wallet becoming a reality, with Jacobs throwing out the idea of an end to checkout lines as the phone could pay and the store could electronically disable the security on goods, allowing the whole transaction to take place without interaction with store personnel.</p>
<p>&#8220;Legal shoplifting, that&#8217;s interesting.&#8221; Kara says.</p>
<p>The technical hurdles aren&#8217;t that big, Rubinstein says. &#8220;Clearly NFC (near-field communications) is coming.&#8221; It&#8217;s more of a social problem than a technical one, Rubinstein says.</p>
<p><strong>8:21 pm:</strong> Some good audience questions. One, on what does it take to deliver an Apple-like experience. Rubinstein, who has experience as part of Apple and trying to &#8220;out-Apple&#8221; Apple, says he thinks that the key is delivering an intergrated experience.</p>
<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think Apple is the only one that can do it, but I do think it is important to have all the elements,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Another question is on the future of mobile TV&#8211;a question that prompts Jacobs to cover his face (Qualcomm spent a bundle on its MediaFlo mobile TV service that saw very limited consumer uptake and Qualcomm is now evaluating what to do with it).</p>
<p>Too few people liked what the service had to offer, Jacobs says, referring to limits on content, screen size, etc. Jacobs said it appears that probably broadcast makes sense for live events, while streaming with TiVo-like controls makes sense for everything else.</p>
<p>&#8220;I actually believe strongly in mobile TV, still,&#8221; he says.</p>

<p>While everyone is considering whether to brine or deep-fry the turkey this week, <strong>All Things Digital</strong> HQ will be busy with our preparations for <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>.</p>
<p>That includes setting the program, which takes place in two weeks and will open with an evening interview with Google&#8217;s Andy Rubin (pictured here).</p>
<p>As the search giant&#8217;s mobile chief and principal force and creator of its Android operating system, Rubin is responsible for the ongoing development of the major rival to the Apple iPhone.</p>
<p>Many have challenged Android, including a recent jab from Apple CEO Steve Jobs, questioning its overall experience and whether or not it&#8217;s actually open.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Rubin and Android have proven to be a disruptive and fast-growing force in the mobile space, aiming for dominance akin to Microsoft&#8217;s on the desktop.</p>
<p>Ironic? Yes.</p>
<p>Rubin started as an engineer at Apple and later worked at General Magic, where he participated in developing Magic Cap, an operating system and interface for handheld devices. When Magic Cap failed, Rubin joined Artemis Research, founded by Steve Perlman, which became WebTV and was eventually acquired by Microsoft.</p>
<p>After several years, Rubin left to found another smartphone effort called Danger, which was also acquired by Microsoft, in 2008.</p>
<p>Disillusionment with his ouster as CEO of Danger motivated him to found Android, which was later acquired by Google.</p>
<p>Now, it seems Rubin is poised to make good on his first efforts at making a truly smart smartphone ubiquitous.</p>
<p>And he is only one of many of the industry heavyweight speakers at <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>, among them: Dan Hesse, president and CEO of Sprint Nextel; Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of Research in Motion; Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard; Joe Belfiore, vice president of Windows Phone Program Management at Microsoft; Jon Rubinstein of Palm, now owned by Hewlett-Packard; Foursquare CEO and co-founder Dennis Crowley; Google advertising czar Susan Wojcicki; and Glenn Lurie, president of Emerging Devices for AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>Plus, there is also one more big speaker we&#8217;ll be announcing soon, so stay tuned.</p>
<p><strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> will be held at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco on December 6 and 7.</p>
<p>It represents the very first brand extension of our flagship <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, now in its ninth year of grilling the big names in tech and media to sold-out analog audiences and scores more on the Web.</p>
<p>And, as always, there will be no PowerPoints, no panels and definitely no pontificating. What there will be are unrehearsed, unscripted and unexpected interviews, where real news is often broken.</p>
<p>But, unlike big <strong>D</strong>, <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> is topic-focused, drilling down deeply into the ubiquity of mobile technology and devices, and its implications for brands, organizations and consumers worldwide.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Book lovers nowadays fall into one of two camps: They either eschew e-readers altogether, preferring the look and feel of print books; or they dive wholeheartedly into e-books, instantly downloading and racing through more titles by the handfuls. If you count yourself in the latter category, you&#8217;re in luck. </p>

<p>Starting this week, Barnes &#038; Noble will ship its $249 Nook Color (<a href="http://nookcolor.com">nookcolor.com</a>), a luxury model in the e-reader world currently dominated by the $139 monochrome Amazon.com Kindle. While the original Nook offered a gray-scale reading screen and a thin, color touch strip for browsing the bookstore, this model is one big color touch screen. It connects to the Web using only Wi-Fi and costs $100 more than last year&#8217;s comparable Wi-Fi Nook, but a Barnes &#038; Noble spokeswoman said that preorders online and in stores are far exceeding company expectations, with over twice as many as for last year&#8217;s Nook. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Nook Color over the past week and I like its book-size build and stylish design. Its user interface is inviting and its digital bookstore is redesigned to make shopping for books enjoyable. Nook Color is aimed at people who are primarily focused on reading but crave the iPad&#8217;s color and some of its versatility. </p>
<p>Like the Kindle, the Nook Color has a Web browser and some apps but no dedicated email program or way to access an app store. A spokeswoman for Barnes &#038; Noble says a full email program and app store are expected early next year. </p>
<p>The Nook Color is unapologetically focused on reading. It accesses Barnes &#038; Noble&#8217;s library of two million downloadable books and over 100 magazines and newspapers (fewer were available during my pre-release testing). The reader has a feature called ArticleView that displays magazine articles in a clear, readable format. You can highlight passages from books and then share them with friends through Facebook, Twitter or a limited, in-book email system. A LendMe feature gives users an easy way to digitally lend their books to friends for 14 days. And for kids, there&#8217;s a feature where popular stories are read aloud by people rather than a computer voice.</p>
<p>The Nook Color is more than just a bright, color screen: It&#8217;s built on the Android 2.1 operating system—the same mobile OS used to run many smartphones. This gives the device access to a full Web browser for tasks like reading favorite sites or checking Facebook, which I did easily. Early next year Nook Color will upgrade to Android 2.2, allowing it to play Flash videos. </p>

<p>Eight apps found in a section called Extras come loaded on the device including apps for Pandora Internet Radio, chess and Sudoku. I logged into my Pandora account, quickly retrieved my saved list of stations and played a QuickMix of music. I was able to work on a crossword puzzle or read a book or magazine on the Nook Color while still listening to Rihanna on the music app. Quickoffice software for Word, Excel and PowerPoint comes built into the Nook Color so users can view—but not edit—documents in these programs if they&#8217;re loaded onto the device with a MicroSD card. Until the Nook Color&#8217;s app store launches early next year, there&#8217;s no way to download free or paid apps. </p>
<p>Navigating around the Nook Color is a cinch. A tiny &#8220;n&#8221; just below the screen returns you to the home screen, which can be customized with photos loaded via a MicroSD card. The Daily Shelf is a dedicated horizontal section at the bottom of the home screen that updates whenever possible with new versions of newspapers (daily), magazines (weekly or monthly, if you subscribe) or books lent to you by friends. Anything on the Daily Shelf can be dragged out onto the home screen, placed anywhere and resized by pinching two fingers out or together. A Quick Nav button displays the Nook Color&#8217;s six sections: Library, Shop, Search, Extras, Web and Settings. A helpful &#8220;Keep Reading&#8221; prompt at the top of the home screen shows the last thing you were reading; selecting it sends you to right where you left off. </p>
<p>Nook Color weighs just under a pound, or twice as much as the  Kindle but still a half-pound lighter than Apple&#8217;s larger iPad. It felt a bit heavy in my hands as I read from it for a long period of time, but I solved that by leaning it against a desk or pillow.</p>
<p>While reading Stacy Schiff&#8217;s &#8220;Cleopatra: A Life,&#8221; I found a particularly interesting tidbit about first-century B.C. marriage contracts requiring wives to vow not to add love potions to their husbands&#8217; food or drink. I highlighted this passage by tapping once on the screen and dragging highlighter handles around it, and then sent it to friends via email with a built-in shortcut for sharing through email, Facebook or Twitter. I selected another passage and posted it on my Facebook wall for friends to read. All these posts had links to buy books from Barnes &#038; Noble.</p>
<p>I really enjoyed reading magazines on the Nook Color because these appeared much as they do in print. Brightly colored pages appeared one at a time when I held the device vertically, or two pages at a time in horizontal view. Magazines can be bought per issue or via subscriptions; a single current issue of House Beautiful was $4.50 or $1.99 with a subscription. The Quick Nav button works in magazines, too, so you can flick a finger right or left to skip ahead to specific sections or articles. </p>
<p>If you love reading and want to share your books with friends or reading updates with social networks, the Nook Color has you covered. It will also give you a taste of  tablet computing with functions like browsing the Web, using some apps and eventually, full emailing. Just remember that Nook Color is laser-focused on e-reading. </p>

<p>Badly, too&#8211;as <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090305/hard-to-stand-behind-windows-mobile-when-our-workers-want-iphones/">this exchange</a> at the company&#8217;s 2009 Public Sector CIO Summit painfully illustrates.</p>

<b>Questioner: </b>With platforms like the Google phone and iPhone coming out, it’s really tough to continue to stand behind Windows Mobile when our employees are bringing these consumer devices into our environments,” the questioner explained. And in your presentation you put Windows Mobile right in the center there, but it was a phone that doesn’t work in America and an operating system that you haven’t released. I’m wondering what your commitment is to continuing to get newer versions of the operating system in our hands so that we don’t have to fight this battle on the ground.”<br />
<b><br />
Steve Ballmer: </b>We have a significant release coming this year. Not the full release we wanted to have this year but we have a significant release coming this year with Windows Mobile 6.5….We still don’t get some of the things that people want on the highest-end phones. Those will come on Windows Mobile 7 next year. Certainly I’m not, um–there’s opportunities for us to accelerate our execution in this area, and we’ve done a lot of work to really make sure we have a team that’s going to be able to accelerate. With that said, we did sell more Windows Mobile devices last year than Apple did iPhones–just an important factoid to have. Blackberry was a little bit ahead, and Google was nowhere to be seen, except in Silicon Valley, I’m sure. But we’ll do our best to help you with that challenge.” </blockquote class="memo" style="background:#faf5e5;font-style:normal;">
<p>But Microsoft&#8217;s &#8220;best&#8221; at that point wasn&#8217;t nearly enough.</p>
<p>Intended as a stopgap, Windows Mobile 6.5 ended up being another damning monument to Microsoft&#8217;s failure to innovate in mobile and the ugly strategic misstep that made it an afterthought in a market that had already lapped it once and was well on its way to lapping it a second time. Just last week Verizon (VZ) President and COO Lowell McAdam dismissed Microsoft as a player in the mobile market. &#8220;We like our relationship with Microsoft,&#8221; he told News.com. &#8220;But clearly in the U.S. there are three major mobile operating systems: RIM, Google, and Apple&#8230;.Microsoft is not at the forefront of our mind.&#8221;</p>
<p>If Windows Phone 7 doesn&#8217;t put it there, Microsoft (MSFT) might as well hand its fast-diminishing portion of the smartphone market to Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG) and RIM (RIMM), because they&#8217;ll take it soon enough. </p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not likely to happen. Because from what I&#8217;ve seen, Windows Phone 7 is as slick an OS as has ever come out of Microsoft&#8211;easily enough to keep the company in the mobile game, assuming it hasn&#8217;t lost it already.</p>
<p>For one thing, WP7 is not simply a rejiggering of Windows Mobile 6.5, it&#8217;s an entirely new OS. For another, its interface is unique enough to differentiate it in an already crowded market. It&#8217;s smart, too&#8211;perhaps even smart enough to give it a leg up on some rivals. Its hubs and tiles GUI, which aggregates  applications and content according to subject and delivers real-time information to the home screen without the need for user involvement, is elegant and intuitive. </p>
<p>Add to this a media experience basically identical to Zune HD, very smart social media management, seamless Xbox live and SharePoint/Office integration and high minimum hardware requirements for OEMs and you&#8217;ve got a pretty compelling OS&#8211;even if it doesn&#8217;t yet support cut-and-paste and true multitasking (the company tells me those are coming). The challenge for Microsoft will be to convince a market that saw Windows Mobile made a laughing stock by iOS, Android and webOS, that Windows Phone 7 isn&#8217;t just more of the same.</p>
<p>That shouldn&#8217;t be too hard given the nearly half-billion dollars in marketing the company is rumored to be throwing at it (<em>check out one of the first ads below</em>) and the quality of the OS itself.</p>
